When 18-year-old Cody Vlasek and his family evacuated their home in Kerr County, Texas, he believed they were saying goodbye to everything they had—especially their beloved dog, who had to be left behind in the chaos of the rising floodwaters.

But what happened next was something straight out of a movie.

A Sudden Escape from Rising Waters

It all started in the middle of the night when the Vlasek family—Cody and his parents—woke up to the sound of heavy rainfall pounding on their roof.

When Cody stepped outside with his dad to check on things, they were shocked to find water already creeping into their backyard.

The river, nearly 30 feet away, had surged toward their home much faster than anyone expected.

They had little time to think. The current was already strong enough to knock them off balance.

Realizing how serious the situation was, Cody shouted that they had to evacuate immediately.

Grabbing what they could, they fled to a neighbor’s house uphill—barely making it out as water reached waist level.

Returning to Rubble and Heartbreak

Once the floodwaters began to recede, the Vlaseks returned to what used to be their home.

But there was no home left. Just rubble, twisted debris, and heartbreak. They had lost everything. And their dog, the family feared, was gone forever.

Cody, a high school senior, struggled to process the loss—not just of his childhood home, but of his furry best friend.

But then, something unexpected happened.

The Sound That Changed Everything

As Cody was picking through the wreckage, he suddenly heard a faint sound. Scratching. A soft whimper.

“I had to break a window to get in,” he told KENS5, a local news station.

“When I climbed through, I heard it—scratching, a little cry.

I turned the corner and there he was, floating in the washer.”

Against all odds, their dog had survived by taking shelter inside the washing machine—a miracle moment that brought a glimmer of hope in the middle of so much loss.

A Flood That Took Too Many Lives

While the Vlaseks were lucky to have survived, others in Kerr County were not.

The flood, triggered by relentless rainfall, has now claimed more than 129 lives. At least 160 people are still unaccounted for.

Tragically, among those killed were 27 young girls from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls.

Many of the youngest campers—some under the age of 10—had been staying in riverside cabins and couldn’t escape in time.

Questions Mount Over Delayed Warnings

As the search for the missing continues, local officials are facing growing criticism over the lack of timely flood alerts.

Residents and families of victims are demanding answers as to why evacuation orders came so late—if at all.

When President Donald Trump visited the area on Friday with First Lady Melania Trump and other Republican leaders, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Senator Ted Cruz, he was pressed on this issue.

When a reporter asked why warnings weren’t sent out sooner, Trump lashed out: “Only a bad person would ask a question like that.

To be honest with you, I don’t know who you are, but only a very evil person would ask a question like that.”

Texas Vows to Keep Searching

Despite the controversy, Governor Abbott said that rescue teams remain committed to locating every missing person.

“We are unrelenting,” he tweeted on Friday night. “The families deserve nothing less.”

If you live in Cape Town, it might be a good idea to stock up on water and plan ahead—especially if you’re in certain areas of the city.

The City of Cape Town has officially announced several planned maintenance projects on its water infrastructure, which will lead to scheduled shutdowns affecting multiple neighbourhoods over the next few days.

Nine-Hour Water Cut Scheduled in Saxonsea, Avondale, and Robinvale

Residents in Saxonsea, Avondale, and Robinvale should brace themselves for a full nine-hour water outage.

This disruption is set to take place on Tuesday, 15 July, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, while city teams carry out important rehabilitation work and install new water mains in the area.

The City emphasized that all three neighbourhoods will be without water for the entire duration of the maintenance window.

It’s all part of a larger infrastructure improvement plan aimed at keeping Cape Town’s water systems in top shape.

Kirstenbosch Set for Test and Full Shutdowns

Meanwhile, if you’re in Kirstenbosch, there will be two separate interruptions to be aware of.

The first is a short test shut-off happening on Tuesday, 15 July, between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, specifically in the Bishopscourt area.

This test is a precursor to a longer full shutdown on Wednesday, 16 July, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

According to the City, this is necessary to enable the installation of a new connection to the current water supply system.

Kirstenbosch Drive, St Albans Close, Riverside Road, and nearby streets will all be affected during both interruptions.

Glen Garry Reservoir to Undergo Month-Long Shutdown

It doesn’t stop there. The City has also confirmed a longer-term water service adjustment with the Glen Garry Reservoir being taken offline for essential maintenance.

This will run from Monday, 14 July to Friday, 15 August 2025, as part of the city’s routine annual cleaning process.

During this time, water will still be supplied to the area, but at a lower-than-usual pressure.

To manage this, water will be rerouted from two treatment plants: the Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant will feed into the Wemmershoek pipeline, while the Blackheath Water Treatment Plant will handle the link pipeline.

Together, they’ll continue supplying the Tygerberg Reservoir.

Residents Urged to Prepare Ahead of Time

The City of Cape Town is urging all affected residents to prepare in advance, keep emergency water supplies ready, and limit water usage during the affected times.

These maintenance works, though inconvenient, are part of ensuring long-term water quality and infrastructure reliability.

It was just after sunrise on a quiet Thursday when the well-heeled calm of Park Lane in central London was abruptly shattered.

Not by luxury cars or tourist chatter—but by dozens of bailiffs clearing out yet another makeshift migrant camp from one of the city’s most exclusive postcodes.

What had become a patchwork of tents, washing lines, and street-side gambling spots vanished in a matter of hours.

Thirty or so migrants gathered their belongings, loaded them into shopping trolleys, and quietly wheeled them toward Marble Arch, while tourists on open-top buses looked on in disbelief.

A Brutal Killing in Broad Daylight

Just days before, a far more chilling event unfolded nearby in Knightsbridge.

Blue Stevens, a 24-year-old father visiting from Hampshire, was fatally stabbed outside the pricey Nusr-Et Steakhouse—where a single steak can cost over £600.

According to reports, a masked assailant on a bike targeted him—possibly for his watch.

When Blue resisted, he was stabbed in the chest as his partner, Tayla, screamed for help. He died right there on the pavement.

In the middle of the day. In front of passersby. In one of the most expensive areas of the city.

The Capital Feels Unfamiliar

If this sounds like a different London—it’s because it is. Crime is spiking.

Glitzy areas once considered safe havens for the elite are seeing a rise in violent robberies, carried out by organized gangs nicknamed the “Rolex Rippers,” who snatch luxury watches, jewelry, and handbags without warning.

Add to that a growing number of shuttered restaurants, a declining property market, and an increasing sense of lawlessness—and the portrait of modern London is far from flattering.

The Rich Are Quietly Packing Their Bags

And the wealthy? They’re leaving. In fact, they’re leaving in droves.

According to a global wealth migration report, the UK lost 9,500 millionaires in 2024 alone—more than any other country except Russia.

Many of these individuals, known as non-doms, are ditching London’s Belgravia, Mayfair, and Knightsbridge in favor of cities like Dubai, Geneva, Milan, and Lisbon.

Why? It’s not just the rise in crime. It’s Labour’s new inheritance tax rules, which for the first time target non-doms’ global assets—not just their UK holdings—after ten years of residence. A 40% tax on everything.

The Tax That Sent Wealth Fleeing

“This policy makes no sense,” says Trevor Abrahamson of Glentree Estates.

“They will pay tax—but not on everything they’ve ever owned worldwide.”

Some of his top clients, including billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and shipping tycoon John Fredriksen, have already relocated to Dubai.

These aren’t just high earners—they’re spenders. The kind of people who prop up London’s luxury economy by buying multi-million-pound homes, dining at upscale restaurants, and keeping boutique stores alive.

Their sudden absence is being felt everywhere.

Once-Buzzing Streets Now Stand Still

In Belgravia’s Eaton Square, usually a quiet but elegant area, streets now look deserted.

Dozens of homes sit empty, blinds drawn, curtains closed—even in summer. The only signs of life? A few cleaners, builders, and car valets polishing spotless vehicles “just in case” their owners jet in for a weekend visit.

The same goes for Chester Square, Montpelier Square, and Kensington—where many properties are on the market with little buyer interest.

Even Mayfair, once a high-demand haven, is seeing home prices drop by up to 26%.

But few sales are closing, as most owners are wealthy enough to hold out indefinitely.

Properties Are Empty, But No One’s Selling

Jo Eccles, managing director of consultancy firm Eccord, says many of the ultra-rich don’t need to sell at all.

“They’re wealthy enough to be patient,” she explains. “They’ll just sit on their properties until the climate improves.”

Camilla Dell of Black Brick confirms the same. Her firm manages homes that are now largely empty.

“It’s the fastest-growing part of my business,” she says. “London used to be a place where the wealthy wanted to live. That’s no longer the case.”

A Slow Decline That’s Been Years in the Making

None of this happened overnight. The departure of wealthy residents has been building steadily since the 2008 financial crash, Brexit uncertainty, and ongoing changes to tax rules.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, London’s elite Russian community disappeared almost instantly.

Now, safety is a growing concern, even for the super-rich. “You have to be much more streetwise than before,” says Eccles.

“You don’t wear a big watch in London anymore. Many of my clients now travel with private security.”

Restaurants and Retailers Are Feeling It Too

It’s not just the real estate market that’s suffering. The hospitality industry is also feeling the loss.

Once-bustling luxury restaurants now stand half-empty.

At places like the Dorchester or Langan’s Brasserie, tables are readily available—and often vacant.

One diner at the Mandarin Oriental’s £170-a-head tasting menu said their party was the only table served during an entire evening.

And outside the posh Mayfair hotels? Migrant camps had recently been pitched on the pavement.

London’s Luxe Appeal Is Fading Fast

Even the high-end shopping experience feels hollow. Once-glamorous boutiques like Oscar de la Renta, Jimmy Choo, and Balmain are frequently empty.

At Lanvin, the doorman barely moves. At the Bentley showroom in Berkeley Square, staff lounge at the counter with little to do.

All of this is a far cry from the London of the past few decades, which welcomed the wealthy from across the globe—from Greek shipping magnates to Middle Eastern royals—with financial stability, green parks, and five-star service.

What’s Next for a Diminished Capital?

Of course, some wealthy buyers remain. Property experts say lower prices might finally lure more domestic buyers back into the city’s most expensive neighborhoods.

And with Trump’s re-election in the U.S., more Americans are moving to areas like Notting Hill and St. John’s Wood.

But even they are arriving to a city that feels emptier, less secure, and uncertain about its identity.

A city where luxury sits beside homelessness. Where empty mansions line the streets.

And where, on a Wednesday afternoon, a young man can be stabbed to death outside a steakhouse with gold-plated knives.

This is London today. Still iconic—but undeniably fraying at the seams.

What began as another tense night in Ukraine quickly spiraled into one of the most intense and devastating attacks of the war so far.

NATO forces had to scramble into action after Russia launched a brutal combination of drone and bomber strikes that battered Ukraine’s western regions—and left both military and civilian targets in ruins.

Western Ukraine Suffers Massive Overnight Attack

According to initial reports, the Russian military fired off an estimated 30 missiles and nearly 700 military drones, in what’s being called the most violent bombardment of the war.

Cities like Lviv, Lutsk, and Chernivtsi were all hit overnight, with rescue workers seen combing through burned vehicles and shattered buildings as morning broke.

In Chernivtsi, near the Romanian border, at least two civilians were confirmed dead—a 26-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man.

At least 18 others were injured, with fears the toll could rise as hospitals continued treating the wounded.

Russia Uses Strategic Bombers in Escalating Air Assault

Russian President Vladimir Putin didn’t hold back on the scale or the symbolism of this latest strike.

Moscow deployed its nuclear-capable Tu-95MS and Tu-160 bombers—aircraft typically used for high-level strategic operations—to rain down destruction across western Ukraine.

Adding to the international concern, Poland and NATO allies responded swiftly.

According to the Polish Armed Forces, fighter jets were scrambled and air defense systems placed on high alert in response to the wave of attacks moving dangerously close to the alliance’s borders.

Cities in Chaos as Civilian Targets Are Hit Again

In Lviv, Russian drones and missiles struck residential neighborhoods and a kindergarten.

The mayor, Andriy Sadovyi, confirmed multiple explosions across several districts.

Meanwhile, a major blow was dealt to the Electron Corporation, which produces trams and buses.

Lutsk also came under heavy fire, with homes suffering extensive damage.

Meanwhile in Kharkiv, more drones and bombs rained down, killing pets and damaging abandoned industrial sites.

Over in Odesa, a military recruitment center was targeted six times by drones in just one day.

Zelensky Confirms Massive Attack and Pleads for Action

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared that a staggering 597 drones and 26 missiles had been launched in this most recent wave.

He praised the country’s air defense teams for neutralizing most of them but acknowledged that civilian areas had been hit hard.

“Unfortunately, there were hits on civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings,” Zelensky said, confirming the fatalities in Chernivtsi and offering condolences to the victims’ families.

He urged for immediate international action—particularly sanctions targeting countries helping Russia produce drones and profit from oil.

He also pushed for more interceptor drones and air defense systems, calling on Western allies to offer not just words, but real support that can save lives.

Trump Expected to Make Announcement as U.S. Resumes Aid

Amid the chaos, Donald Trump is expected to make a major statement on Monday, possibly tied to new sanctions on Russia.

This comes just as the U.S. ramps up its military support to Ukraine after a period of reduced aid.

Some analysts believe this new aid—and Trump’s announcement—may have prompted Putin to strike preemptively in an attempt to demonstrate dominance before policy shifts in Washington.

Harrowing Scenes Show Sick Orphans Fleeing Bomb Shelter

One of the most heartbreaking moments of the week came not from the battlefield, but from a children’s hospice.

Footage emerged showing terminally ill orphans being evacuated during a Russian drone attack in Chernivtsi.

Nurses were seen cradling frail, confused children in their arms as explosions rang out nearby.

The children were rushed into a bomb shelter inside the Butterfly House, Ukraine’s largest palliative care center for children.

The video, reportedly filmed overnight on July 9 or 10, has now gone viral as a painful reminder of the human toll of this war.

The shelter had once been considered safe after the children were relocated there from Kryvyi Rih, President Zelensky’s hometown, but even this refuge was shaken by nearby strikes.

NATO Scrambles While Russia Doubles Down

This sudden escalation from Russia has rattled NATO.

While Polish officials confirmed their forces responded immediately, they did not disclose which other NATO countries joined the operation.

What is clear is that radar systems and defense infrastructure were moved to full readiness.

It’s also notable that this is the second such NATO alert in just a few days, indicating a pattern in Russia’s increasingly aggressive aerial campaign.

Putin Signals He’s Not Backing Down

With Putin leaning into more strategic, large-scale attacks—paired with the use of nuclear-capable bombers—it’s clear that he believes he holds a stronger hand in the war now.

But for Ukraine, the message is equally clear: they can’t afford to stand still. And for the rest of the world, the urgency of acting quickly—through sanctions, defense systems, and unified support—has never been greater.

It was one of those moments that made the internet stop and refresh.

On Thursday night, Justin Bieber quietly dropped his seventh studio album, Swag, without warning—and the reactions came fast.

But while fans were picking apart the lyrics for signs of tension in his marriage to Hailey Bieber, the singer was busy doing something else entirely: thirsting over his wife’s bikini photos on Instagram.

Hailey’s Bikini Post Grabs Justin’s Attention

On Friday, Hailey Bieber lit up Instagram with some jaw-dropping bikini shots taken during a sunny getaway in Majorca.

The snaps—shared on her Rhode beauty brand’s account—showed her soaking in the sun on a yacht while flaunting her figure in a yellow Pucci string bikini worth nearly $500.

Justin didn’t hold back. He reposted one of the photos to his Instagram Story and let the world know how he felt with a one-word, uncensored response:
“F*KKKKKKKKKK.”**

From Beach Glam to Jet Skis and Martinis

In true Hailey fashion, the bikini wasn’t the only statement piece.

She paired it with a navy polka-dot headscarf and chunky gold earrings.

One photo showed her applying a Rhode skincare product while lounging, while another caught her racing around on a jet ski.

Later, she was seen sipping a martini on the shore, dressed in a coordinated yellow crop top and high-waisted pants—likely from the same high-end designer.

Whether it was about celebrating the billion-dollar success of her brand or simply vibing with summer energy, Hailey looked every bit the star.

Justin’s Lyrics Hint at Marriage Struggles

Meanwhile, Swag—Justin’s new 21-track album—was already sparking intense fan speculation.

Some of the songs appeared to dive deep into emotional territory, especially Walking Away, which many believe hints at tensions between him and Hailey.

In the verses, Justin sings:
“Days go by so fast, don’t wanna spend them with you / So tell me why you’re throwing stones at my back / You know I’m defenseless…”
He continues:
“Girl, we better stop before we say some s** / We’ve been testing our patience / I think we better off if we just take a break.”*

But then, in the chorus, there’s a twist of hope:
“Baby, I ain’t walking away / You were my diamond / Gave you a ring / I made you a promise / I told you I’d change…”

Fans React With Love and a Little Skepticism

Some fans were deeply moved. One person on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “I want everyone who said Justin and Hailey gonna divorce to listen right here cause he ain’t walking away.” Another gushed, “Justin loves Hailey… that’s his TRUE LOVE!!!”

Others weren’t so convinced, saying the love songs felt forced and comparing them unfavorably to tracks believed to be about Selena Gomez.

Still, the emotional weight of songs like Devotion and Forgiveness resonated with many listeners.

Sweet Spot Controversy and Raunchy Guest Verses

One track stirring conversation is Sweet Spot—especially thanks to rapper Sexyy Red’s explicit feature.

Her steamy verse didn’t sit well with all fans, who said it clashed with Justin’s softer tone and romantic vibe.

Some suggested that the song would be better suited to artists like Usher or Chris Brown.

A few even joked that OG Bieber fans wouldn’t know how to process the collab, asking for a remix without Sexyy Red.

Album Cover Mystery and Family Imagery

Though Bieber hasn’t confirmed an official album cover, several black-and-white images have been used to promote Swag.

In one, Justin stands shirtless with Hailey in front of him, holding their 10-month-old son Jack Blues.

The artistic photos were captured in a dimly lit barn, with only a sliver of light cutting through.

In another promo, Bieber cradles Jack on a couch, reinforcing themes of fatherhood and personal growth threaded through the album.

Hailey and Justin Balance Business with Art

Hailey’s viral beach moment may have doubled as a celebration of her brand’s massive valuation, but it also neatly lined up with the Swag album rollout.

Meanwhile, Justin used the drop to boost his latest fashion venture, Skylrk, following his departure from Drew House.

The brand quietly released pastel-toned hoodies, tanks, sunglasses, beanies, and sandals, with some $160 pieces selling out almost immediately.

A Long Time Coming for Bieber’s Return

Though the album’s arrival felt sudden, Bieber had been teasing it with studio shots in recent months.

Some fans think Swag might be a reworked version of a project he started as far back as 2022.

His last full album, Justice (2021), earned mixed reviews but went double platinum.

Before that, he dropped Changes (2020), Purpose (2015), Believe (2012), and even a holiday album, Under the Mistletoe (2011).

The Billboard Blitz That Took Over the World

In true pop star fashion, Justin didn’t just release the album—he announced it globally.

Billboards promoting Swag popped up in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and even Reykjavík, Iceland.

Some of the billboards teased the tracklist, which includes songs like All I Can Take, Yukon, 405, Zuma House, and Glory Voice Memo.

One standout: track 16, Standing On Business, isn’t a song but a skit based on Justin’s viral confrontation with paparazzi.

A New Era with Layers of Love, Struggle, and Swag

With a mix of sensual tracks, emotional ballads, and edgy features, Swag feels like Justin Bieber’s most personal and experimental work yet.

Whether it’s therapy sessions, reflections on fatherhood, or navigating public pressure, the album gives listeners a glimpse into the many versions of Justin behind the fame.

And while fans continue dissecting every lyric and photo for signs of tension or devotion, one thing is clear—Justin isn’t going anywhere.

In front of a fired-up crowd of young conservative voters in Florida, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson dropped some heavy allegations about Jeffrey Epstein—claims that stirred the pot once again around one of the most controversial figures of the past decade.

Speaking at the Turning Point summit, Carlson didn’t hold back.

His theory? That Epstein wasn’t just a mysterious billionaire with disturbing connections, but that he was actually working for Israeli intelligence, running a global blackmail operation.

Questioning Epstein’s Origins and Allegiances

Carlson, now a prominent conservative voice outside of mainstream media, took direct aim at what he believes is a deliberate cover-up.

He asked the crowd: “Why was Epstein doing this, who was behind it, and where did the money come from?” To him, those unanswered questions suggest a much deeper and more sinister network.

He floated the idea that Epstein—who once taught high school math—somehow amassed vast wealth, private planes, a secluded island, and the largest private home in Manhattan without anyone seriously investigating how it all came to be.

Carlson linked that mystery to foreign intelligence, suggesting Epstein worked for Mossad, Israel’s national intelligence agency.

Accusing the DOJ of Hiding the Truth

Carlson didn’t stop at Epstein. He took direct shots at the U.S. Department of Justice, calling out Attorney General Pam Bondi by name.

Bondi recently shut down speculation that Epstein’s death in jail in 2019 was anything but a suicide, and dismissed talk of a “client list” altogether.

Carlson wasn’t buying it. “Intel services—U.S. and Israeli—are at the very center of this story,” he said, adding that the current DOJ is actively protecting them.

He argued the media and political class have been conditioned to avoid raising these questions for fear of backlash.

Epstein’s Ties to Israeli Leaders Resurface

Carlson also referenced Epstein’s well-documented connections to high-level Israeli officials, specifically former Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

The two were known to have met numerous times, and Barak even reportedly stayed at Epstein’s New York home.

“Was he running a blackmail operation for a foreign government?” Carlson asked, pointing to these connections. “Why is no one allowed to ask that?”

He made it clear he didn’t see such questions as anti-Semitic or anti-Israel—just necessary for truth and accountability.

“There’s nothing hateful about saying that,” he told the audience.

Summit Crowd Echoes Frustration Over Epstein Investigation

Carlson wasn’t the only one tapping into the crowd’s frustration.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham also took the stage and gauged the audience’s sentiment about how Epstein’s case has been handled.

“Clap if you’re satisfied with the investigation,” she asked.

Silence. Then, “Clap if you’re not satisfied,” and the room erupted in applause.

The crowd’s response reflected what’s become a growing sentiment among conservatives—that the government isn’t being fully transparent about Epstein’s ties and operations.

Trump Administration Faces Backlash Over Bondi and DOJ

While former President Donald Trump is set to appear at the same summit this weekend, his administration is under fire from within the MAGA base.

Many believed Trump would bring transparency to the Epstein case—especially with Bondi and other loyalists in key roles—but are now feeling let down.

Pam Bondi is facing intense criticism. Far-right activist Laura Loomer even called for her resignation in a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter), referring to her as “Blondi” and accusing her of repeatedly botching major decisions.

Despite the noise, the White House is standing by her.

Trump’s Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended Bondi’s record, saying the president remains proud of her work on his “Make America Safe Again” platform.

A Deepening Divide on the Right

With high-profile names like Carlson and Ingraham fanning the flames and grassroots conservatives demanding more answers, the Epstein issue is once again becoming a political lightning rod.

What’s clear is that, even years after Epstein’s death, his story still haunts American politics—and figures like Carlson are making sure it stays in the headlines.

Sometimes in rugby, the best moments aren’t the ones that happen on the field.

They’re in the locker room, in the hotels, or in the casual conversations between matches.

One moment that sticks with me happened during the 2017 British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand—right after a midweek game against the Chiefs.

The first Test against the All Blacks was only a few days away, and even though most of us had a pretty solid idea of who was going to be in the starting XV, Warren Gatland walked in and said, “We haven’t picked the team yet.”

That’s when James Haskell, or “Hask,” interrupted with a deadpan, “Boys, there’s still a chance,” and the whole room burst out laughing.

From “Bin Juice” to Test Players

That moment turned into a kind of running joke.

Hask had coined the term “bin juice” for the midweek players—himself included.

It was a tongue-in-cheek label, but ironically, two so-called “bin juicers,” Elliot Daly and Liam Williams, ended up in the Test team.

Even though we laughed about it at the time, part of me always felt that the phrase took something away from the value those midweek players brought.

Take Rory Best, for example—he was often called the “midweek captain,” but honestly, he was one of the most important guys on that tour.

A true leader, even if he wasn’t in the Test lineup.

Chatting Lions History with Ronan O’Gara

Fast forward to now, I’m in Australia with Ronan O’Gara, both of us working on the Lions tour coverage for Sky Sports.

We’ve got our families out here and our kids are constantly playing together—makes it feel a bit like a summer camp with rugby thrown in.

We’ve had a lot of good conversations, especially about the old tours.

Ronan told me stories from the 2005 tour in New Zealand, which really sounded divided—very much a “them and us” atmosphere.

Brian O’Driscoll mentioned that even though he’s great mates with Denis Hickie, they barely saw each other on that tour.

That kind of split never happened on the tours I was part of.

Playing Both Roles Brings Perspective

Having been both a midweek player and a Test starter myself, I understand both sides.

When you’re not in the main squad, it’s easy to question your role.

But once you are in the Test team, you learn to value what those squad players contribute.

I never felt a disconnect within the Lions teams I played for, but let’s be honest—there will always be players who don’t make the cut, and managing that energy in the camp is crucial.

Andy Farrell Wouldn’t Stand for That Talk

One thing I don’t see happening on this tour? The “bin juice” label making a comeback.

Andy Farrell isn’t that kind of coach. His approach is built on giving everyone a fair shot.

You can see it in the way he rotates the Ireland squad.

He wouldn’t allow any talk that undermines players who aren’t in the starting lineup.

The good news this time around is that the lines between starters and backups feel much more blurred.

Everyone seems genuinely in the mix.

Where the Real Battles Are Happening

Right now, the most hotly contested spots are in the back-row and on the bench.

The backline feels mostly settled—guys like Jamison Gibson-Park, Finn Russell, James Lowe, and Tommy Freeman seem locked in.

But when it comes to flanker and bench roles, it’s wide open.

The Irish centres have a slight edge over the Scots, and Hugo Keenan can easily step in if Blair Kinghorn is fit.

Personally, I think players like Henry Pollock, Jac Morgan, Tadhg Beirne, and Ben Earl have a big opportunity today.

Those flank jerseys are still up for grabs.

Some Names Are Already Inked In

Of course, some players are safe bets. Dan Sheehan, Maro Itoje, Jamison Gibson-Park, and Finn Russell are almost certainly going to feature prominently.

But for the rest? It’s game on.

Enjoying the Journey Down Under

And just to round things off—I made the trip to Australia with Qatar Airways, recently named the world’s number one airline.

The flight was smooth, the service top-tier. Honestly, the whole experience down here—from working alongside great rugby minds to sharing it all with family—has been something special.

cratching.
