 Are you using Kubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin, our current stable release? Or are you already running our development builds of the upcoming 25.10 (Questing Quokka)?
We currently have <a href="https://kde.org/announcements/plasma/6/6.3.90/">Plasma 6.3.90 (Plasma 6.4 Beta1)</a> available in our <a href="https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/beta">Beta PPA</a> for Kubuntu 25.04 and for the <a href="http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/">25.10 development series</a>.
However this is a Beta release, and we should re-iterate the disclaimer:

DISCLAIMER: This release contains untested and unstable software. It is highly recommended you do not use this version in a production environment and do not use it as your daily work environment. You risk crashes and loss of data.

6.4 Beta1 packages and required dependencies are available in our Beta PPA. The PPA should work whether you are currently using our backports PPA or not. If you are prepared to test via the PPA, then add the beta PPA and then upgrade:
<pre id="block-cfba50ba-2e9d-4487-9d61-21bc3167f4ee" class="wp-block-preformatted">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/beta && sudo apt full-upgrade -y</pre>
Then reboot.
In case of issues, testers should be prepared to use ppa-purge to remove the PPA and revert/downgrade packages.
Kubuntu is part of the <a href="https://www.kde.org/community/whatiskde/">KDE community</a>, so this testing will benefit both Kubuntu as well as upstream KDE Plasma software, which is used by many other distributions too.
<ul id="block-5dfd69bc-7925-48b9-956f-378d0207d24f"><li>If you believe you might have found a packaging bug, you can use <a href="https://launchpad.net/">launchpad.net</a> to post testing feedback to the Kubuntu team as a bug, or give feedback on Matrix [1], or mailing lists [2].</li><li>If you believe you have found a bug in the underlying software, then <a href="https://bugs.kde.org/">bugs.kde.org</a> is the best place to file your bug report.</li></ul>
Please review the <a href="https://community.kde.org/Plasma/Plasma_6#Plasma_6.4">planned feature list</a>, <a href="https://kde.org/announcements/plasma/5/5.24.90/"></a><a href="https://kde.org/announcements/plasma/6/6.3.90/">release announcement</a> and <a href="https://kde.org/announcements/changelogs/plasma/6/6.3.5-6.3.90/">changelog</a>.
[Test Case] * General tests: – Does plasma desktop start as normal with no apparent regressions over 6.3? – General workflow – testers should carry out their normal tasks, using the plasma features they normally do, and test common subsystems such as audio, settings changes, compositing, desktop affects, suspend etc. * Specific tests: – Identify items with front/user facing changes capable of specific testing. – Test the ‘fixed’ functionality or ‘new’ feature.
Testing may involve some technical set up to do, so while you do not need to be a highly advanced K/Ubuntu user, some proficiently in apt-based package management is advisable.
Testing is very important to the quality of the software Ubuntu and Kubuntu developers package and release.
We need your help to get this important beta release in shape for Kubuntu and the KDE community as a whole.

We are pleased to announce that the <a href="https://kde.org/announcements/changelogs/plasma/6/6.3.4-6.3.5/">Plasma 6.3.5 bugfix update</a> is now available for Kubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin in our backports PPA.
As usual with our PPAs, there is the caveat that the PPA may receive additional updates and new releases of KDE Plasma, Gear (Apps), and Frameworks, plus other apps and required libraries. Users should always review proposed updates to decide whether they wish to receive them.
To upgrade:
Add the following repository to your software sources list:
ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
or if it is already added, the updates should become available via your preferred update method.
The PPA can be added manually in the Konsole terminal with the command:
<code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports</code>
and packages then updated with
sudo apt full-upgrade

The Kubuntu Team is happy to announce that Kubuntu 25.04 has been released.
Codenamed “Plucky Puffin”, Kubuntu 25.04 continues our tradition of giving you Friendly Computing by integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.
The release features the latest KDE Plasma 6.3 desktop, KDE Gear 24.12.3, kernel 6.14, and many other updated applications and libraries.

Codenamed “Oracular Oriole”, Kubuntu 24.10 continues our tradition of giving you Friendly Computing by integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.
Under the hood, there have been updates to many core packages, including a new 6.11 based kernel, KDE Frameworks 5.116 and 6.6.0, <a href="https://kde.org/announcements/plasma/6/6.1.0/">KDE Plasma 6.1</a> and many updated KDE gear applications.

The Plasma wayland session is now the default option in sddm (display manager login screen). An X11 session can be selected instead if desired. The last used session type will be remembered, so you do not have to switch type on each login.

To enable Flatpaks in KDE’s Discover in Kubuntu 24.10, run this command:

The Kubuntu Team is happy to announce that Kubuntu 24.04 has been released, featuring the ‘beautiful’ <a href="https://kde.org/announcements/plasma/5/5.27.0/">KDE Plasma 5.27</a> simple by default, powerful when needed.
Codenamed “Noble Numbat”, Kubuntu 24.04 continues our tradition of giving you Friendly Computing by integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.
Under the hood, there have been updates to many core packages, including a new 6.8-based kernel, <a href="https://kde.org/announcements/frameworks/5/5.115.0/" data-type="URL">KDE Frameworks 5.115</a>, <a href="https://kde.org/announcements/plasma/5/5.27.11/">KDE Plasma 5.27</a> and <a href="https://kde.org/announcements/gear/23.08.0/">KDE Gear 23.08</a>.

Kubuntu has seen many updates for other applications, both in our default install, and installable from the Ubuntu archive.
Haruna, Krita, Kdevelop, Yakuake, and many many more applications are updated.
Applications for core day-to-day usage are included and updated, such as Firefox, and LibreOffice.

We are thrilled to announce the winners of the Kubuntu Brand Graphic Design contest and the Wallpaper Contest! These competitions brought out the best in creativity, innovation, and passion from the Kubuntu community, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results.

Kubuntu Brand Graphic Design Contest Winners 
The Kubuntu Council is excited to reveal that after much deliberation and awe at the sheer talent on display, the winner of the Kubuntu Brand Graphic Design contest is Fabio Maricato! Fabio’s entry captivated us with its innovative approach and deep understanding of the Kubuntu brand essence. Coming in a close second is Desodi, whose creative flair and original design impressed us all. In third place, we have John Tolorunlojo, whose submission showcased exceptional creativity and skill.
Wallpaper Contest Honours 
For the Wallpaper Contest, we had the pleasure of selecting three outstanding entries that will grace the screens of Kubuntu 24.04 LTS users worldwide. Congratulations to Gregorio, Dilip, and Jack Sharp for their stunning wallpaper contributions. Each design brings a unique flavor to the Kubuntu desktop experience, embodying the spirit of our community.
A Heartfelt Thank You 
We extend our deepest gratitude to every participant who shared their artistry and vision with us.
