The magnitude of what you just mentioned is captivating. “End of Days” begins with a description of a priest who, from his window in the Vatican, sees a comet seemingly forming an eyebrow above the moon. During the scene, he rushes to a wooden chest, where he takes out a silver container, which has a scroll inside. Upon taking the scroll out, he unrolls it, and yes! A drawing of a comet arches over the moon, resembling an eyebrow! It is clear that this drawing depicts the dreadful celestial display known as the ‘Eye of God.’ In disbelief, the priest rushes into the chamber of the Vatican where the pope sits in guards and says, “The child will be born today!” While cutting to ‘New City, 1979,’ there is a live childbirth scene where the nurse commands the mom to push! A baby girl is born; a nurse takes the infant in its swaddling clothes and races to a basement room in the hospital. The nurse anoints the child with the blood of a freshly killed rattlesnake before bringing the child back to the mother.

At this moment, I am preemptively asking myself, where is William Donohue when we require his service? Why is it that his Catholic League mocks an innocent comedy “Dogma,” but allows “End of Days” which teaches us that once every thousand years a woman comes into the world who, if in the last hour of the millennium, she gets impregnated by the Prince of Darkness, she will give birth to the Anti-Christ that will initiate…yes, end of days? But in the meantime, a woman is being hunted down, the Pope wants the Vatican Civil War to cease, and the murder isn’t undertaken just due to faith in God? The woman if murdered of course would be a sin, but perhaps justifiable under the circumstances especially since the humble instrument chosen by God to save the universe is an alcoholic bodyguard named Jericho Cane, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jericho and his partner Chicago (Kevin Pollak) find themselves investigating a puzzling series of events, including a man with his tongue removed who still manages to shout a warning before being nailed to the ceiling of his hospital room.

Indeed, Jericho’s question does reveal a gap in the overall story behind the scenes. ‘End of Days’ is no stranger to exhibiting ‘too clever for its own good’ overtones, especially since it attempts to be self-aware despite positioning itself as a straightforward slasher movie. Whatever ‘fun’ they intended to have while sorting through the plot reasoning for such a loony timeline came off as half-baked. Not exactly at a deep enough level to be entertaining and not superficial enough to be easily dismissed. This fun planning didn’t quite catch up with them, since they forgot that they have built a world where the Prince of Darkness must execute his plan at the last minute before the new millennium is announced. As they are utilizing a scream-queen goal, it becomes evident that solving the plot and logic issues never crossed their minds. There are just too many interlocking pieces out of sync to feel genuine.

Let’s analyze this. Rome is 7 hours ahead of New York. To put it differently, those clever monks stated, “The infant will be conceived from 6 till 7 a.m., January 1, Rome time, which will be between 11 p.m. and 12 a.m. in a city that doesn’t exist yet, on a continent we are utterly oblivious to. And that world is round? Well, it would be unacceptable to suggest that there are varying times in various places as the world revolves around the sun.” No wonder they devised Gregorian chants to relieve the stress when losing sleep over these puzzling questions.

Blending the ridiculous and mixes the otherworldly with “End of Days” as a demon-like creature that resembles Gabriel Byrne stalks a twenty-year-old Christine (Robin Tunney) during her stay in Manhattan, while Jericho attempts to ensure her safety. The all-American conflict, Schwarzenegger style, involves managing a critical of a man hanging onto a helicopter and the first one dooming themselves across a Manhattan skyline. Let’s not forget the scene where there is a high-rise window that a character hangs onto for dear life, while a subway derails and contains an explosion followed by fireballs going off across square blocks of Manhattan. The otherworld power dissipating is only one part of Frieden. This sparks a new chain of concerns surrounding violence and the existence of moral codes. It begs the question: what are the laws of physics to this Byrne? “The Man”, the name he is credited under, is in my belief the avatar of evil, Satan himself but is shown to possess variable strength. When Jericho shoots him, the Man’s magic sends him flying backward which allows us the opportunity to see his shirt more. And when Jericho switches to a machine gun, he is thrown backward and seemingly sent into hibernation for some time.

And that means what exactly? Is there a limit on how much anti-injury mojo he can accumulate in a millennium? The last battle of the movie serves as a counterpart to the new 2000 year‘s Times Square countdown. It wouldn’t be too polite to remind everyone that the new millennium’s first day is actually the last day of the 2000, which is on January 1. Even then, ‘End of Days’ would find a loophole. This is the first movie that argues convincingly that the marker of Satan ‘666’ is, in fact, ‘999’ upside down, and all it takes is adding a to get to ‘1999.’

Chone (Lee Paris) is a 16-year-old student who is smart and intelligent, trying to make sense of his world in director Robert Butler’s feature film Life Ain’t Like The Movies. The film explores the challenges posed on the teenager during the transition to adulthood. Chone’s journey begins with an assignment from his teacher, Mr. Peterson (William C. Ingram). He asks every student in his class to keep a journal so that each child’s impressions and sentiments will be recorded over the course of a year. But in the case of Chone, Mr. Peterson gives him a video camera because he has high hopes for Chone and sees that he has a love for the movie industry.

Increased self-reflection through video leads to his first challenge in life when Chad (Connor Kearns) an obnoxious classmate slurs Chone in class. The two become confrontational and in the presence of Mr. Peterson, Chone socks Chad in the face. Chone ends up with suspension and Chad is barely chastised. In suspension, Chad starts making advances on Chone’s best friend, Lola (Jhayla Mosley). They begin dating, and the now double-dealing Chad threatens Chone to stay away from Lola or else.

When approaching Life Ain’t Like The Movies, the first thing that stands out is that it is an independent title that isn’t exactly a blockbuster level production. Let me share my critiques from a technical perspective. The most problematic is hands down the sound, and it’s painfully obvious how the audio people tried to salvage the original footage by editing it afterwards. Sound seems to be an issue across the board and in the end one has to accept to live with it. The creators of the film, or rather the audio engineers should have gotten this one right and somehow had the budget to make it work.

The fights between Chone and Chad are the only two scenes that come to my mind that are drawn rather than animated. The fight choreography, along with its stage direction, is highly complex, coupled with the fact that there are minors involved, means that having them done in animation isn’t the worst of ideas. Yet, I mention this animation problem only to illustrate the inadvertent clue the animation offers that the film’s budget was miniscule, something you wouldn’t want to show the viewer.

Life Ain’t Like The Movies certainly has a story to tell. Unlike The Breakfast Club, its coming-of-age themes are not completely dealt with, but the film untouchedly captures the life of a boy trying to figure life around him. It’s also a touching story of a black family standing together. Life at home is tough more teenage tough. Chone’s dad, Jack (Wendell Kinney), is getting more and more let down with Chone’s attitude towards sports. Chone would rather read comic books and watch or make films than play sports. On the other hand, when Chone gets suspended from school for fighting, Jack is very upset and makes sure he gets in trouble too along with Chone.

Chone, however, escapes to his grandfather, Pops (Paul Bates). He teaches his grandchild that life is hard and there are times when one must stand and fight. Pops does give Jack some fatherly advice and tells him that he must learn to accept Chone for who he is and not for the person he wishes his son to be. It’s all pretty moving.

This movie marks the debut acting gig for a majority of the teenager cast and it is commendable how well it sets them up for the future. Paris Lee acts brilliantly and is an excellent actor, but his supporting actors are just as, if not better than him. As a filmmaker or an actor, there is no need to worry because everyone has to start somewhere, and the tools needed to create such films are already made available. So go ahead, explore and express yourself creatively. You have no excuses.

Life Ain’t Like The Movies has a little bit of drama loaded in it which reminds me of the afternoon targeted television dramas. Unfortunately for this movie, it is difficult to follow some parts because of the poor quality in sound. But overcoming those problems comes the story of Butler and it is very much needed by the youth. It has an inspiring theme

One of the best sequences of “Independence Day” is in the beginning where one of the massive shadows is cast falling on the surface of the moon. I can still remember the Visitors arriving from outside the solar system. Their ship is enormous, indeed. “One-fourth the size of the moon”, a scientist gasped when he spotted it. It’s astonishing that something that big orbits the earth. It’s close enough to the Earth’s surface that one might expect tidal waves but this is not a movie where minor details matter.

The enormous spaceship called the mother ship is visible to stock characters which include the president of the United States, and the ship is now dropping off saucers that are only 15 miles in diameter. These ships are a lot smaller and plan to hover above cities on Earth in a menacing way to threaten people.

The question is, do they come in peace? Wouldn’t it be funny if this was the case? These vessels do not come in peace and as David Jeff Goldblum learns, they do try to attack, but only after timing, using our very own satellites.

How can he possibly know that? It’s because his laptop picks up the signal and converts it into a digital format. While the countdown is on for Armageddon, I could only wonder, why do the aliens work for hours and minutes? Can a planet such as theirs, support the same length of day and year as Earth? so pleasant.

Not only does ‘Independence Day’ come from the same genre as flying saucers that emerged in the 1950s, but it is practically the same, right down to the panic in the street, where frightened extras run toward the camera whilst some horrifying scene takes place behind the huge buildings which frame them. There are lots of little stories about interesting characters, which are chosen due to their ethnicity, occupation, and even sexuality which is always on display even in the old B movies. Here, representing the entire human race is not only the president and David the tech head, but also exotic dancers, Arabs, Brits, cute kids, generals, homosexuals, Jews, drunk crop dusters, tight-lipped defence secretaries, and even the McLaughlin Group. Every single character even in the movie possesses an invisible label.

In spite of the scale and detail of the special effects in ‘Independence Day’, their execution leaves much to be desired. The large saucers are a dull, dark shape that looms over much of the scenes; and the little grey ‘fighter’ saucers that the aliens use are a letdown- squat, clunky little crafts that look like they came out of Rocket Men of Mars.

Sure, there are windows of the White House and the Empire State Building set for detonation which I am sure will serve as videos of them getting ambushed in an upgraded version of the same, but with giant enemies in the context. If these beings can build spaceships a quarter the size of the moon, why go through the trouble of aerial dogfighting with the US Air Force? And why aren’t there any explosions for anything else? Where’s the fun in blowing up everything at the same time? Perhaps, instead of just drowning TVs in snow and static, a more ‘fun’ approach can be taken by erasing the internet with a neutron bomb. But hey, why do the people not freak out even a little bit? News comes that Los Angeles, Washington, and New York have ceased to exist, so will there be grief? Not quite, the characters pf the film shake their heads in disagreement and move on to the next scene.

I understand we are not supposed to ask such questions. I guess we should be engrossed in the plot, and it does have some interesting concepts such as the one where Area 51, the US military’s secret base in Nevada, actually stores the alien spacecraft everyone assumes the government seized in New Mexico circa 1948.

Deep down within the Earth hides an alien spaceship alongside some aliens that have been embalmed in a lab that is managed by the long-haired Dr. Okun who is played by the famous Brent Spiner aka Data from the acclaimed Star Trek The Next Generation. Just like Okun, they made Goldblum over into a very weird ‘mad scientist’, restating ‘they don’t let us out much’ and even informing the president ‘Guess you’d like to see the big tamale eh?’ With the president preparing Earth’s reaction, it is evident that David, a character portrayed by Goldblum, will provide a makeshift answer. using and hawing plans before Goldblum. And after he, now revealing Steven Hiller played by Will Smith, emerges, his action plan, of course, depends on him. What Goldblum devises, however, I cannot share. No way, I reject that. My only comment is that it is astonishing why these aliens have traversed unspeakable distances over light years, yet did not consider first incorporating a computational virus protection system. (My assumption is that any aliens willing to flag down this particular plan of action likely pedaled across the galaxy on bicycles.) “Independence Day” is very cautious and quite boring compared to other movies, especially with its vast imagination.

The aliens in this film I saw, when I finally managed to see them, were a real letdown, I mean why octopus men. If an alien race ever comes to Earth, I for one hope they have something interesting to tell us. Wow, or, if they are going to exterminate us, then I hope they do it with something we have not come across before, instead of those stupid-looking ray beams that appear to be crafted by the same set of artists who did the covers for Amazing Stories Magazine way back in the forty’s.

At the same time, “Independence Day” is a movie that fits the category of goofy summer blockbusters and on that point, I took a certain level of pleasure from it, as indeed, I take pleasure from any film that dares to say, “It’s the end of the world as we know it.”

Power Rangers by Saban

While other movie franchises such are Batman v Superman or Pacific Rim apply gloom and rain in their fight scenes, Saban’s Power Rangers organically uses color. I still wonder why Warner Bros. would wish to cover up the gorgeous red and blue of Superman’s costume what a shame! Situated in the power rangers universe, the ranger’s costumes are a mix of red, black, blue, yellow, and pink. There is a huge monster called Goldar, who is completely color gold.

This is not a dark night filled with sepia toned monsters and rain. I feel like the filmmakers are letting us be children when these fight scenes occur. It seems like ‘other’ bagged movies are bashful and cover up the action in those other movies. Like they are looking for color dark enough to hide the fact that we are watching big people in silly outfits fight. Honestly, Power Rangers shows the action.

We can comfortably lean on the chairs as we see adults turn a little immature in their brightly colored clothesand engage in combat. Rather than feeling shameful looking at this, we see what we imagined when we were kids battling with toys in the privacy of our bedrooms. There is one very good musical cue towards the end, which in other films is no doubt intended to be a comic twist, but to me here, ‘The director was simply saying that this is enjoyable. That’s the reason we brought you here.’

All the young actors portraying the rangers are remarkable. I already spoke about the Yellow and Blue Rangers. Dacre Montgomery in particular stood out to me among the others. He’s in charge of the entire group and goes by the title of the Red Ranger. He’s got an amazing amount of primal appeal which was cemented in the film by a few shirtless scenes. Bill Hader and Bryan Cranston both lend their voices to iconic characters in the mythology. Hader as Alpha 5 was wonderful. He brought differences in what might have otherwise been written as a terrible character and helped make him the comic relief and not a cause for eyebrows.

The film, of course, begins with a sizzling opening scene. You know right off the bat that it’s not a Power Rangers film of 1993. For some star power, Elizabeth Banks portrays Rita Repulsa, the film’s main antagonist. Her portrayal of Rita differs greatly from that of the television series, mostly for the better. There are a couple of comedic beats that she attempts that probably shouldn’t have made it into the final cut, but it’s clear she’s enjoying the part, and I did too.

Will you be as entertained by this movie as I was? I believe that there are people that will appreciate this film, especially if they followed the show. You will receive fantastic callbacks and cameos to give your nostalgia some emotional touch. As for those of you who don’t belong to my generation, I think you will be grateful for the tenderness they used telling this particular superhero origin. It is a film that possesses its own charm, which is just a little bit aside from all the other Marvel and DC films that are dominating the market. I may sound like I’m reviewing two distinct movies a teenage drama and a colorful adult animation.

This film is both of those things. It constantly goes from being campy to serious without a second thought. Admittingly, as a fan of the show, this made absolute sense to me. It caters to my eight-year old mentality, while still providing me with some reality anchor. It was a great mix, in my opinion, but I can see how some others may find it difficult. I recommend that you grab a few weeks KFC (if you can sneak in a Krispy Kreme, then do so, and you can thank me later) and just allow the mixture of cheese and teenage emotions to be the center of the world for a few hours.

With the filmmakers having worked on this movie, I wish it is successful enough so we get sequel upon sequel. This one has everything other superheros have been offering for ages; good battling evil for the sake of world peace. But yeah, Saban’s Power Rangers at least attempt to have screen representation for those who have not been represented through Marvel or DC.

There are things in the mythology that are still not told. I think about the ambiguity of a Green Ranger movie and the possibilities of the White Ranger and Lord Zedd on screen, and I drool. For now, however, Saban’s Power Rangers casts boys and girls to the notion that it is not just white men in colorful suits saving the day. It’s the vibrant and colorful people in costumes who are the ones saving the world.

The 13th Warrior

However, it is the recent podcast by Megan and Kristin on the topic of historical fiction films that reminded me of a movie that generally tends to be appreciated by its viewers if they ever get around to watching it. When asked in a not so serious poll on Facebook, respondents (my circle of friends) were evenly split with about half of them claiming to have seen it.

A voice message to people who like this flick: During each and every discussion that I’ve had with these viewers, they all unreservedly praise the film. Then why is it so popular when half the people I know still haven’t had the pleasure of watching it? Is it a rumor with all false evidence? The answer is relatively straightforward, yet very puzzling.

The 13th Warrior (1999), also known as Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan, focuses on an ambassador as played by the actor Antonio Banderas, who is sent by his homeland in Baghdad to Tossuk Vlad under the direction of the president. Although he engages with Northmen, the story’s action follows him as someone on a quest. He is tested in the North where he faces a clouded and violent horror. It is a test of his endurance and will. In the end he tone that leaves around a changed and more courageous man.

The inspiration for this film can be traced back to the historical figure Ahmad ibn Fadlan. The film is based on the Michael Crichton authored novel Eaters of the Dead which depicts fictional tales surrounding Ahmed ibn Fadlan’s legendary voyage through the Scandinavian world in the 10th century.

Though I have not read his book, it would be difficult for me to assess the cinema version’s truthfulness as compared to the written version. But there exists in history such an interesting narrative for writers or filmmakers. An Islamic man from the desert travels by vessel into the North and settles among the Pagans. Will he be adapted to such counter-parts’ civilization and climate? And the fact that his life has such a background makes the story even more fascinating. It is a hero’s journey and he, indeed, finds himself in the process.

The engagement of Banderas in the film might surprise the viewer at first. It is understandable that the studio wanted to sell. But it is probably one of Banderas’ best acting performances in any of his films. He plays the character well and succeeds in appearing to be an alien from Medieval period. Also pleasing is the appearance of Omar Sharif in a minor role at the beginning of this film.

He is effective in a limited amount of footage because he has the authority to lend plausibility to what appears to be a far-fetched narrative on paper. In general, there are no great masterpieces or any phenomenal aspects of the film. No great acting or tremendous use of lighting. On the contrary, it is a splendid film and only illustrates what can be achieved with an interesting plot, as opposed to some striving to be out of the ordinary in visual storytelling.

Hence we pose the question again, why does it seem to be such an averagely accepted film? What is its USP? And the last one is not answered as easily, probably leading into our core part of the discussion. The film, without a doubt, is in the historical fiction category. Fictional stories are basically invented but, in this case, they are patterned around real life events or real people or places.

We’ve previously agreed that The 13th Warrior is based on real events. However, The 13th Warrior is a perfect case of a cult flick, a sub-genre. Just to put it in kind of an easier way, a cult classic is a film that is not widely known but is adored by certain audiences. A good cult classic is Firefly (2002), or Shaun of the Dead (2004), okay the later has gone further into the franchises of spoofing themselves years down the line, but still.

In an extreme sense, these classic films were not backed well by the full force of a production/advertising budget or under performed in the box office. The 13th Warrior only recovered about 40% of its production costs in ticket sales. Yet it continues to be loved by the people.

Expectations are not missed on The 13th Warrior as it goes through the trope of genre mix specialists. They have waited this long so the audience understands that here begins the hero’s journey, and the history has been established, and then background elements of the horror genre come into play. The audience is now left to wonder if any one of the 13 warriors is going to stand up and be counted against the overpowering evil luring them on their journey.

The blending of genres allows the audience to become more absorbed within the narrative while also appealing to fans of different film styles. Therefore, this is the achievement of The 13th Warrior. The notion of genre is not one that is monolithic. There is a fluidity; they rub against each other and within them, it is impossible to impose clear boundaries. The more intertwined they are, the more the audience is intrigued by the story. Hence, the case in point is The 13th Warrior: it is a story which offers to the viewer areas that can appeal to anyone.

House Of Gucci

“I am the most Gucci of them all” said Patrizia Reggiani in a 2014 interview. Looking at this comically exaggerated, extremely dramatic tragedy, one understands her. She has been referred to as ‘Lady Gucci’ and ‘Black Widow,’ but Reggiani was, during the 1990s, at the center of a stink involving passion, greed, glamour, and yes, murder and a psychic. To that trashy mix, Ridley Scott’s latest “true story” adaptation enhances the glam factor, casting pop superstar Lady Gaga, who was recently nominated for an Oscar for her leading role in A Star Is Born, who relished playing a woman with ‘her’ vicious allure.

The screenwriters’ Becky Johnston and Roberto Bentivegna based their work on the non-fiction book authored by Sara Gay Forden. House of Gucci reveals drama which had its inception amidst the parties held in Milan in late 1970s as the events progressed towards a court case at the turn of the 1990s. Together with the storyline, actors play a crucial role so does the fascinating story that revolved around the interaction of characters: a renowned American fashion designer Adam Driver, the character of the southern Italian Losa Gucci, and her grandson Maurizio Gucci.

“I want to see how this story goes,” says Patrizia with the resolve to seek and marry the grandson of Guccio Gucci to live her dreams charmingly knit around love ballets, midnight poetics and hollowed pumpkins, familial relationships, and escalated moments of hostile rage.

In the early stages, it appears to have been very romantic, the stage where Patrizia is seen inscribing her telephone contact on Maurizio’s scooter with lipstick. It is a captivating scenario: living in the space nodes of culture, he rides a dorky bike while dizzy with wealth, she whines her head as though on a tightrope. She might not appreciate painting from Klimt to Picasso, but she possesses ambition that could be better placed as heady in a more upscale manner than that of Nomi from the famous Showgirls by Paul Verhoeven.

This is definitely the view that Jeremy Irons’s sinister Rodolfo has, when he throws his own son out of the house for marrying into a family of “trucks drivers!” Whoopee! Sly Uncle Aldo (Al Pacino) is less disgusted and becomes captivated by Patrizia’s brassy lures and enables her and his nephew to sink their claws into the fashion house which he shares with his brother. One moment, Patrizia is the daughter of a truck business tycoon, the next she turns to Lady Macbeth getting ready for the hunt: “Time to take out the trash.”

As fast as the pace is, so it is the progression moving from a joyful family union to absolute chaos, the melodrama has Cockney subtitles a la virage: “I’m sure Maurizio would love your strudel, Ethel” announcing Thespian pivot of the action from Patrizia to Paola (Call My Agent’s Camille Cottin). There is the whole shadow of The Godfather waiting in the wings, the guiding principles for more or less everything, from an outdoors rustic dinner with Pacino in attendance to scenes showing violent acts intercut with one’s immersion into the water, only the water here was from the bathtub, not the holy water.

Now we’ve got Jared Leto, an actor who has recently taken to never holding back his excitement in front of the camera. In the film, Paolo, Aldo’s moronic son, seems to only want to draw attention to himself and his award wins. After making it through the entire theatricalize session, Leto makes his first entrance on stage looking like an over the top model, distorted in a montage of plush suits and fat.

With regard to his voice, others have only the slight Italian accent, Leto speaks as though addressing whales with a succession of high-pitched sounds. Only Pacino seems to be able to contest reed Leto’s comical performative presence. In later scenes in which the two actors are together in later scenes, they look utterly pathetic, like something out of a Neapolitan version of little Britain.

In a fashion that is typical of Scott’s 2017 Getty family drama All the Money in the World, House of Gucci succeeds in capturing the particular temporal setting, the most recent history dominating the orange and brown color scheme for cigarette and coffee colors, and the moments of bold black and white photography. The music is a definite eye-roller though; Everyone from Pavarotti to Tracy Chapman to Caterina Caselli and Blondie are in a mix and a wedding is enjoyed with the song ‘Faith’ by George Michael in the background.

People looking forward to a Mommie Dearest – style camp fest as per the trailer will be in for a disappointment; House of Gucci is, for better or worse, just a bit too ‘nice’ to acquire cult status. Although this is not the case, Gaga deserves a gong for staying focused through the lunacy – for the richer, not the poorer; in gaudiness and in degree.

Phenomenon

Auburn, California served as the filming location in town. Most of the businesses were still working and depended on the traffic brought about by the movie even today.

Last night, my husband and I were combing through the television for a movie that would satisfy us both and came across this one. I’ve never heard of this movie before and anticipated that it was one of those old movies and so expected it to be boring whereas it was made in 1996, to be exact.

Which is why I’m glad we did. It gave us a sense of satisfaction to finish the film despite its length, because it was quite inspiring and had legendary performances by John Travolta (in a strange role for him), Robert Duval and Forest Whitaker.

It is not a movie that will leave you in silence and boredom, as one has to think and wonder about the questions it raises long after one sees “The End” on the screen. What more does one want from a movie?

John Travolta plays George Malley,a skinny 37 year old garage mechanic with strong morals who is not above average in intellect and lives in a Spanish-flavored small town. He suddenly gets into shock as a flash from outer space strikes him on his birthday, and out of the blue he is swarmed with intelligence. Thereon, his thirst for knowledge escalates and drives him to strive for a higher force in life.

On a sudden note, George as he was known by many has since then ceased to exist. People tend to give him odd stares, because no one likes surprises. It suffices for them that George is George and nothing more or less so that they are not displeased with his unchanging role in their lives.

A chess undefeated, An earthquake predictor and a strange vibe sniffing George sounds brilliant but is terrifying. It implies that surprises exist for what they could be hence, people are scared.

Doc (Robert Duvall) is possessed by such thoughts, the only one who quickly gets used to the new George, whom he warms up like a son and believes, as every man should, in the greatness of humanity.

Another one is Nate (Forest Whitaker) who is George’s best friend and naive enough to examine George closely and come to the conclusion that he has not changed. With them, George can also express his euphoria caused by the numerous discoveries that he was assisting with every day.

Phenomenon has some parallels with the 1968 film Charly. But if Charly was retarded and George is average, they are both receiving intelligence at its best. But those who have seen Charly already know from the beginning, where the movie is probably heading.

The character who receives the utmost attention among the movies best lines is Robert Duval who explains the purpose of the film to the town’s people telling them that the only reason they are afraid of the New George it is because it stands for change and it tells them that there is still a lot to their lives and they are just coy to use it.

In an era where there seems to be no logic and the most nonsensical thing is the target to reach, such admiration for learning new things, bettering oneself and utilizing the potential within is truly commendable.

I absolutely agreed on the message, but I must say this movie is a perfect example of how a strong message can be diminished simply because the base is all over the place.

There are too many plots and too many subplots in this work so that the main idea is seemingly lost as the film progresses.

The most annoying one is George’s courtship of Lace (Kyra Sedgwick). The pacing on their whole romance is so sluggish, you could probably go to sleep and it won’t matter. And when it finally picks up, it’s as if you’re struggling to understand the cause or reason for this escalation.

Aside from this drama, there are other plots which are intended to make the circumstances for George more difficult but none of them are not convincing and it is as if it was included in the plot just to provide more layer of difficulties.

Phenomenon could have been a better picture had it dared to extend the limits of its plot a little further and actually introduce more difficult or threatening aspects for George and the world that he inhabits.

It could have suffered from more coherent storytelling and lack of unnecessary plots. But that is not what it is about. It is about transformation, tolerance and love, and it touches those three bases very well even though it is never really quite there.

Son of the Mask

Indeed, when I state that it’s my job to watch bad movies so you people do not have to or wait a second. it seems I’ve never said it this way before, but yes it is the case. It is movies like Son of the Mask that I am referring to. My agony would have been for nothing if you fall for the promotional hype like the commercials where they wish to pass Jamie Kennedy as though he’s Jim Carrey or some nostalgic view for the 1994 film (which I do consider unbelievably average, at least it is a masterpiece compared to this) and find themselves in a cinema where Son of the Mask is the running film. And your agony at that time I am sure will be for nothing.

There’s a single ray of hope that can be linked to Son of the Mask and that is the casting of Alan Cumming (X2: X-Men United, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over) as the trickster god Loki. Naturally, though, the realization of this idea has been, in a word, disastrous, for director Lawrence Guterman (Cats & Dogs) instantly stripped the character of Loki here of all his punkish pixieness and decided to make him a gay goth.

This is strange, to put it mildly, but perhaps this is what happens when Lawrence Guterman, a name nobody has ever heard about and for good reason, is allowed to put a ‘A LAWRENCE GUTERMAN FILM’ label on this shit and talk as if he is Orson Welles. Why a person like this gets to wax lyrical in public domain about his directorial film is baffling, but the bigger conundrum is why this person gets to make these ‘films’ in the first place.

Except, I suppose, Lawrence Guterman was probably once Larry Guterman, that obnoxious kid who sat right at the back of the benches during seventh period biology class and thought he was the class joker yet in actuality was such a nuisance and so unfunny that the teacher herself was funnier – quite an entertaining Larry Guterman to see please.

And that Larry Guterman really caught me off guard in a negative way and intimidate me. In fact, Son of the Mask could easily be classified as having Attention Deficit Disorder it’s either overly dramatic to the point of looking frantically around the camera in about a million different patterns, such as from people’s noses and below their waists, all of which are disgusting to witness, or it attempts to delve into ‘drawing’ the issues of being employed and being a parent that would make someone embarrassed for the film even before hearing anything else but kills you with boredom. If there is one thing which can be said about Son of the Mask, it is that the film is dizzying, but not in the sense that it is thrilling.

When the film is entitled “Son of the Mask,” it does not relent on the funny, PG-parented jokes terminally cursed connecting dots outside the box of art. I can only say Ewwww. The sexually frustrated animator Tim Avery (Kennedy: Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) well, why didn’t Lance Khazei go ahead and make him Tex is wearing that insane Loki mask while he has sex with his wife, the less pregnant looking Tonya Harding (albeit Traylor Howard does resemble her, and the character’s name is Tyler too), who wants a kid so badly that she doesn’t even realize that her husband has gone green and plastic heads. See? Ewww.

So this child who is a demigod can do everything but what one should do as a baby. The kid can shake like Michiagan J. frog and mess with the cute family pet dog who obviously feels neglected because of the new addition to the family.

I understand that this is envisioned as some sort of live action Looney Tune movie, the things I see, Some things that are acceptable cartoonish, like a baby and a dog being unduly aggressive toward each other are much more horrible and disgusting rather than cartoon characters struggling for dominance, even when they appear almost completely synthetic.

Also, there isn’t a day that passes when I do not wish there was a Henry David Thoreau sort of prohibition against Ben Stein factor of television. True to form, he returns as an actor playing a dull curator who comes in and seconds all theories before leaving. And if that is what the filmmakers want to do, then why spoil us with visions of Nixon goons, rather than just put Kissinger in there and call it a day? That movie could have been easier to watch if Son of the Mask was the only one left standing.

Insidious

“Insidious” an American horror film written by Leigh Whannell and was directed by James Wan There were some twist and interesting perspectives to the common horror films in the story which I found to be very appealing. Having spent the entire day watching a documentary about ancient magic and ritual and then turning on the television to “Insidious”.

I think it is rather strange how I came upon the movie. Perhaps it has something to do with the mystery surrounding me that seems to suggest I have some latent qualities within me. In any case, however, apart from the more mystical overtones that speak of some core of the unknown me, and which are plenty, I am satisfied with my viewing experience and thereby presenting it here.

The film is not in any way a deficient slasher film. Not a single moment passes whereby one gets to hear the cast, who was over the top, getting such a framed critique. There are definitely never any restrictions with reference to the countless possibilities that the writer wrote and the director brought to life. It is quite effective how the actors worked harmoniously with each other and told an extraordinary story from the ordinary which was all engaging and enthralling.

As though a professional sorcerer chanting the magic words, over time, the characterization engages to an increasing degree the sense of mystery surrounding the ambience. It evokes a sense of the otherworldly at the central point of the ritual when the time seems ripe for demons or higher beings to manifest.

There is no debating the magnetic pull of the movie’s plot on the character Elise, as if Lin Shaye was meant to play it. She made me start thinking of psychics in a different way; rather, who wouldn’t want to meet this sort of woman and even work for her part time? Elise is like the wise Cumaean Sybil who, in Aeneas’ Greek mythology, lets Trojan exile Aeneas descend into the Underworld to see the spirit of his long lost father.

But what she does goes beyond the conventional definition of a ‘psychic’ and tries to help people as a mystic. Deep psychological issues that are of a spiritual nature in origin she resolves with the method of scientific analysis of her clients’ problems. And she does it gracefully, as any good witch performing white magic magic to which, I believe, even priests would be jealous.

As for what makes the movie comparable to the classic supernatural film, it is the shared theme of a world that exists beyond our sensing and our religious doctrines. It’s the realm of ‘Further’ in which wayward spirits roam and malevolent s**t hides in the murky places at the crossroads. Elise assisted the lost spirit of the boy in the further and helps him return to Here and goes beyond where she ought to go to protect innocent lives from the dark force even if it is at her cost.

“Insidious” is a bit of a thought provoking film where it presents supernatural themes that one assumes is much more easier to think about in the minds eye than actually illustrate on screen. The impression the movie leaves is quite disturbing and as fascinating as watching a car crash.

It is the kind of feeling that formats the associative memory and is almost impossible to remove. If one needs an old fashion good British horror film without millions of severed body parts and obnoxiously loud screams, but rather just specters of some sort or demons, this movie may work.

Courageous

It has been years, and Nathan (Alex Kendrick) and Shane (Kevin Downes) are still the best buddies. They have seen each other’s kids, gone to and been together in church, and now also work together as partners. As sheriff deputies, they are charged to protect the people of Georgia. New to the area Nathan Hayes (Ken Bevel) is willing to settle in their town in order to bring up his family where he was raised; as a new police officer rookie David Thompson (Ben Davies) is appointed as Nathan’s partner.

The four of them have developed an unbreakable bond that enables them to balance their hectic work life with a friendship built around laughter and joviality. However, when tragedy befalls on Nathan, he seems to freeze for a long time, but eventually comes to appreciate the fleeting nature of life; in his darkest hour, suddenly an illumination occurs that changes forever his definition of bravery.

Unlike the other films, each of the Kendrick brothers productions has its own distinct features but if we are to rank the movies, their third one, Fireproof, is much better (in terms of production) than the second. And whereas every film was produced with an encouraging theme in mind, this one didn’t make any improvements in editing or sound production, but it was an emotional tribute to fatherhood.

Even in the midst of sorrow it does textured grief in a way that puts so much into perspective. Perhaps the only negative is a tendency to event to operating at a sluggish pace. It is what first half feels: it falls into a rut and plods along. Thankfully, for the sake of the story, the film appears to build up to quite a moderate pace and while too much time is not wasted, it provides a true depiction of recovery.

Probably the most impactful in me is the scope that it captures in the lives of each of the men. It considers almost every envisionable case of fatherhood possible; illegitimate and remarried as the mother is, and also the ideal ‘sex’ case of fatherhood. This is tragic, yes, but it also allows to legitimately stretch the other’s case a little more. But even with some of the other elements, all of it does integrate well towards the bigger picture.

It is not surprising to see that most of the fathers/soldiers are actors which makes them uncomfortable at times especially IT is from local and the church of the producers Stephen and Alex Kendrick but this doesn’t prevent the film from stealing good. The script can be described as rough during some areas because it is not well ‘polished’, but in light of its main purpose, it shouldn’t.

Focusing on the topic, giving perspective never heard before as masses claim, well, yes, it is all about fathers and their role within a family. It is very passionate, with a pleasure fact that the song was titled by the band Casting Crowns, which is fantastic. Courageous provokes our thoughts on father’s role in today’s world, and in the movie world, for that matter, this is a compliment.

Content: there is one stand-off between the police and the criminals [one man gets shot], one character is killed and one of the characters is found to be an evidence thief. Another character narrates how he was once in love with a college girl and they had a baby [he makes a hint that he wanted her to get an abortion].
