'Old people smell' is real, experts say — here's how to avoid it as you age

Aging can affect body odor through skin cell changes and the release of a cellular compound, requiring antioxidant-rich foods and specialized skincare rather than just regular hygiene.

Many people have posted on social media about the so-called "old people smell," described as a faintly musty or greasy scent sometimes associated with older adults.

This phenomenon is more science than stigma, experts say.

"I think we all know this smell," Dr. Dan Wesson, professor at the University of Florida College of Medicine, told Fox News Digital.

ALZHEIMER'S RATES HAVE REACHED STAGGERING NUMBER AS EXPERTS CALL FOR CHANGE

"Some describe it as dusty, like an old book. Others as oily or greasy. None of these, of course, are flattering descriptions, and that's why this isn't the kind of smell you want to label a person with," he noted.

The skin is the largest organ in the body, so it makes sense that it will undergo significant changes as the body ages, according to Wesson.

For most of our lives, body odor stems from sweat, bacteria and dead skin, which can be addressed with basic hygiene. But with aging, changes in skin composition and oil production make smells more complex, the expert noted.

"Skin cells accumulate damage over time," he said — and those damaged cells can release compounds that contribute to odor.

HIGHER DEMENTIA RISK SEEN IN WOMEN WITH COMMON HEALTH ISSUE

A key culprit is 2-nonenal, a compound that emerges from lipid oxidation, which is the process of fats in the cells breaking down due to imbalances in the body, studies show.

This compound is unique to aging skin and has a greasy, cardboard-like odor.

2-nonenal is not easily washed off with regular hygiene practices, "by nature of its fatty composition," Wesson said.

"This is why managing this body odor requires more complex solutions," he said.

Wesson suggests taking a more holistic approach by eating antioxidant-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, staying hydrated and using antioxidant skincare.

Some medications — including those for high cholesterol, ADHD or depression — could also impact the body's metabolism and how much it sweats, contributing to odor, according to Wesson.

Hormones can also influence how people smell. Post-menopausal women often experience changes in skin and scent due to declining estrogen levels, studies show.

"Hormone replacement therapy can ward off some changes that may alter body odor – though [HRT] is not without risks and should be discussed carefully with your doctor," Wesson said.

Not all odor changes are normal, experts warn.

"A sudden change in body odor can be a warning sign of an underlying health issue," Wesson warned.

CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER

Diseases like cancer and dementia, for example, can alter body chemistry and scent.

"If your loved ones report a sudden change, you should consult your doctor," Wesson advised.

Some people may worry about how they smell even when others wouldn’t notice. That concern could stem from parosmia, a distorted sense of smell, or olfactory hallucinations, where unpleasant smells are imagined.

"People can perceive odors that aren’t there at all," Wesson said. "It’s important to consider whether it’s a real odor or just a change in perception."

For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health

By understanding the biology behind age-related odor and taking a proactive approach to health and skincare, this condition can be managed, experts say.

American veterans attacked, injured while distributing aid in Gaza with US-backed group

Two American veterans working with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation were injured in a grenade attack while distributing aid. The organization said the international community ignored its warnings about Hamas' threats.

Two American veterans working with the U.S.- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) were injured in an attack while distributing aid to Palestinians. The two veterans are reportedly receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition. GHF said the Americans were "highly decorated" veterans.

"GHF has repeatedly warned of credible threats from Hamas, including explicit plans to target American personnel, Palestinian aid workers, and the civilians who rely on our sites for food. Today’s attack tragically affirms those warnings," the organization wrote on X.

GHF vowed that it was still committed to the mission of delivering aid to Gazans even in the face of violent attacks.

TERROR IN GAZA: HAMAS OFFERS BOUNTIES TO KILL US AND LOCAL AID WORKERS, GROUP SAYS

The organization later posted an image of grenade fragments left over from the attack, showing the weapons were packed with ball bearings. GHF said that after throwing the grenades the two assailants ran into a crowd of civilians. According to GHF Executive Chairman Rev. Johnnie Moore, the grenades were found to be of Iranian origin and have been "commonly used by Hamas."

"I am sorry to say also that today’s terror attack on Americans is partly a byproduct of the legitimacy that many in the press and at the [U.N.] provide to Hamas —amplifying Hamas’s lies about GHF every day, but also actively collaborating with Hamas," Moore wrote on X.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee condemned the attack, saying that "With Hamas no good deed goes unpunished."

PEOPLE IN GAZA ARE THANKING TRUMP FOR AID, LEADER OF US-BACKED GROUP SAYS

"The Hamas terrorist organization and other terrorist groups in Gaza continue efforts to sabotage and fail the distribution of humanitarian aid at the distribution sites and on the way to them," IDF International Spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani wrote in a statement. "IDF troops facilitated a safe evacuation for further medical treatment. The Hamas terrorist organization and other terrorist groups in Gaza continue to harm the Gazan civilians."

GHF slammed the international community over its silence on the threats and violence against its aid workers.

"For weeks, we warned this would happen. We asked the aid community to condemn threats. They stayed silent. We asked the media to stop laundering Hamas lies. They kept printing. Today, Hamas followed through by attacking American veterans with grenades as they delivered food. The silence is deafening. At what point is allowing Hamas to terrorize aid workers and run a propaganda campaign through Western media no longer acceptable?"

The attack comes just one week after the organization said that Hamas put bounties on the heads of its workers, American and Palestinian alike. According to GHF, Hamas was offering money to anyone who killed or injured one of the organization’s aid workers.

"We are aware of credible reports that Hamas is openly targeting the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and those who work with us. According to these reports, Hamas has placed bounties on both our American security personnel and Palestinian aid workers, offering cash rewards to anyone who injures or kills them," GHF told Fox News Digital.

"The targets of Hamas’ brutality are heroes who are simply trying to feed the people of Gaza in the middle of a war."

As of July 4, GHF said it had delivered 60 million meals since it began distributing aid in May.

NY Times addresses backlash over report on NYC mayoral candidate Mamdani's college application

Controversy erupted over a New York Times article about Zohran Mamdani's college application identifying as Asian and African American, drawing internal and external criticism.

The New York Times seems to be in damage control after the paper's story about New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani identifying as Asian and African American on his college application upset some of its readers, leading to an editor from the outlet attempting to clear up the controversy on social media on Friday.

The article claimed that Mamdani, when asked his race on his 2009 college application to Columbia University, checked the boxes for "Asian" but also "Black or African American," in their article published on Thursday.

The Times' assistant managing editor for Standards and Trust, Patrick Healy, put out a lengthy statement on X the following day after receiving "reader feedback" on the article.

RESURFACED VIDEO SHOWS NYC MAYORAL HOPEFUL SAYING HE WANTS TO REPLACE PRIVATE HOMES WITH COMMUNAL LIVING

"Our reporters obtained information about Mr. Mamdani’s Columbia college application and went to the Mamdani campaign with it. When we hear anything of news value, we try to confirm it through direct sources. Mr. Mamdani confirmed this information in an interview with The Times," he wrote.

Healy explained that the New York City mayoral candidate felt limited by the options listed in the application's racial identity boxes — and since he was born in Uganda, decided to write in the country on his application.

Mamdani's application was made available to The Times after a cyberattack on Columbia University in late June led to some of the school's sensitive information being exposed to the hackers.

Healy stated that although the outlet received the information after it was stolen in a cyberattack, "The Times does not solely rely on nor make a decision to publish information from such a source," and verified the application with Mamdani himself before publishing the story.

Regarding the feedback, he added, "We believe Mr. Mamdani’s thinking and decision-making, laid out in his words, was newsworthy and in line with our mission to help readers better know and understand top candidates for major offices."

Liberal critics, such as Keith Olbermann, lashed out at the Times on X. He stated, "Your absolute abrogation of the NYT standards would in a better era there have led the full range of you in management to resign. Utter failure. Then again, if you don't realize NYT is perceived as actively campaigning against Mamdani, you're all lost anyway."

Another aspect of the article that some readers took issue with was The Times' source, who sent them Mamdani's 2009 college application.

NEW YORK TIMES COLUMNIST ADMITS THAT TRUMP IS A 'NORMIE REPUBLICAN'

An opinion columnist for the outlet took to the social media platform Bluesky to slam his own publication for the story.

Jamelle Bouie, a columnist for The Times, slung personal insults at the reporters on social media as well.

Responding to a Bluesky post slamming one of the Times reporters, Benjamin Ryan, the columnist had this to say: "Everything I have seen about him screams a guy with little to no actual brain activity."

Shortly after pubically slamming The Times' story and the reporters who worked on it, Bouie deleted the posts and issued a short statement on his Bluesky account.

"I deleted several posts about a Times story because they violated Times social media standards," he said.

The New York Times did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment on this matter. Fox News Digital also reached out to Bouie for comment.

Trump defends use of ‘shylock’ term at rally amid antisemitism claims

President Donald Trump has defended his use of the term "shylock" at a rally this week, saying he is unaware it is considered antisemitic by some people.

President Donald Trump has defended his use of the term "shylock" at a rally this week, saying he was unaware it is considered antisemitic by some people.

Trump used the term in his speech in Iowa on Thursday, shortly after his signature One Big Beautiful Bill Act was passed by Congress earlier in the day.

Shylock is the name of the villainous Jewish moneylender in Shakespeare’s "The Merchant of Venice," who demands a pound of flesh from a debtor.

TRUMP ADMIN CRACKS DOWN ON ANTISEMITISM AS DOJ OFFICIAL EXPOSES 'VIOLENT RHETORIC' OF RADICAL PROTESTERS

Over time, the name came to be used more broadly to refer to a loan shark or greedy moneylender. Today, some consider it an antisemitic slur, particularly when used in reference to Jewish people.

"No death tax, no estate tax, no going to the banks and borrowing some from, in some cases, a fine banker and in some cases, shylocks and bad people," Trump said, while referring to the bill’s elimination of estate taxes and borrowing burdens.

The term did not provoke any reaction from the crowd, but his remark quickly blew up online, and he later defended using it when a reporter said it is widely considered an antiemetic phrase.

"No I’ve never heard it that way," Trump responded. "To me, a shylock is somebody that’s a moneylender at high rates. I’ve never heard it that way. You view it differently than me. I’ve never heard that."

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which works to combat antisemitism, said the term evokes "a centuries-old antisemitic trope about Jews and greed that is extremely offensive and dangerous."

SUSPECT CHARGED WITH MURDERING ISRAELI EMBASSY STAFF COULD FACE DEATH PENALTY

"President Trump's use of the term is very troubling and irresponsible," the ADL wrote in a statement Friday. "It underscores how lies and conspiracies about Jews remain deeply entrenched in our country. Words from our leaders matter and we expect more from the President of the United States."

Rep. Jerry Nadler, D- N.Y., who is Jewish, agreed and ripped Trump for using the term.

"The term ‘Shylock’ is one of the most recognizable antisemitic slurs in the English language," Nadler wrote on X. "It’s a centuries-old trope that has fueled discrimination, hatred and violence against Jews for generations. I condemn Donald Trump’s dangerous use of this blatantly antisemitic slur and his long history of trafficking in antisemitic tropes."

Nadler went on to say that Trump has exploited the rise of antisemitism to suppress free speech and that he isn’t serious about tackling the problem.

Conservative political commentator John Podhoretz, who is also Jewish, shot back at Nadler.

"I condemn your endorsement of an anti-Semitic mayoral candidate which you did because you are a pusillanimous coward," Podhoretz wrote, in reference to Nadler endorsing Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor. "At best Trump said Shylock the same week he destroyed Iran’s nuclear program. What have you ever done for the Jews, Jerry?"

Trump has made tackling antisemitism — particularly on college campuses and through immigration enforcement — a top priority in his campaign. He signed an executive order in January mandating that all federal agencies identify and apply tools to address antisemitic harassment and violence in higher education. His administration has also launched investigations into universities including Harvard, Columbia, and UC Berkeley over allegations of antisemitism and has threatened to pull federal funding if they fail to act.

His daughter Ivanka converted to Orthodox Judaism in 2009 and is married to Jared Kushner, who is also Jewish.

Democrat Joe Biden, while vice president, said in 2014 that he had made a "poor choice" of words a day after he used the term in remarks to a legal aid group.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

LeBron James reacts to speculation after he practiced at Cavaliers' facility: 'Yall bored man'

LeBron James responded to just about everyone who had something to say about him practicing at the Cleveland Cavaliers' facility earlier this week.

LeBron James' future is speculated to be in limbo, so when he was training at another team's facility, it raised some eyebrows.

James exercised his player option for the 2025-26 season, and with it has some rumors of retirement at the end of the season, or even a potential trade incoming.

In the midst of the conversation, it turned out that James wound up training at the practice facility of his former Cleveland Cavaliers.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

James took a photo with Denver Jones, who signed to the team's summer league roster, at the facility, and it prompted plenty reaction.

But James said it was a total nothingburger, saying he's practiced there "every summer since it was built."

"I live here still and train every summer.
‘Baywatch’ star David Charvet has no regrets leaving Hollywood for construction

David Charvet shares why he left acting nearly two decades ago to focus on family and construction, building luxury homes in Los Angeles while maintaining a creative outlet.

David Charvet left Hollywood nearly two decades ago and has no interest in going back.

The actor, who starred in "Baywatch" and "Melrose Place," has turned to construction. In 2008, he and a business partner launched Jones Builders Group, which primarily builds luxury homes in the Los Angeles area, People magazine reported.

"It was one way for me to leave Hollywood and to still be creative," the former ‘90s heartthrob recently told the outlet. "It was also one way for me to ensure that I would be home every morning and home every night so that I could raise my two children."

JOSH DUHAMEL’S ‘DOOMSDAY CABIN’ AWAY FROM HOLLYWOOD ALLOWS HIS KIDS TO BE KIDS

"… I don't miss the fame," the 53-year-old reflected. "I don't miss the workload that we had because we used to work a lot, and it's very hard to raise a family that way. I commend all of the actors who have families that are able to balance that."

The outlet noted that when Charvet and his then-wife, Brooke Burke, started having children, he realized that acting would need to take a backseat. He was eager to be a present father to their kids, Heaven Rain, now 18, and Shaya Braven, 17.

The French-born actor pointed out that at the time, more and more films and TV shows were being filmed outside Los Angeles, which meant he would be away from his family for extended periods of time.

"The goal was when I got my children, when they were born, was that I was going to be hands-on," Charvet explained. "I promised Brooke that I would be that man."

After seven years of marriage, Charvet and Burke announced in 2018 that they were parting ways. Their divorce was finalized in 2020.

Over the years, Charvet has immersed himself in his new profession. According to the outlet, he and Jones Builders have partnered with the fitness studio Burn LA and owner Maria Chase. His properties can also be seen throughout the Los Angeles area.

Burn LA has three locations with a fourth on the way. The outlet noted there are plans to expand in Miami and New York City.

"I'm learning more today than I ever thought I would ever learn, and it's incredible because this new little baby of ours, Burn, is flourishing in such an incredible way, and you have to protect it every day, and you have to also grow it every day," said Charvet. "So, how do you scale without compromising hospitality and all of the important features that it has? That's the next step."

CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTER

Charvet insisted that while he misses some parts of Hollywood, he has no regrets about walking away.

"I miss the camaraderie that I had with the people on the sets," he said. "I had old-school producers and old-school people that worked as a unit, and it was a real family... [But] I wouldn't change anything.

"I have to say that what I've experienced with my kids and what I've experienced in the last 17 years has definitely made me a better man, has made me understand what it is to have real relationships and be able to treat people kindly and have more of a humble approach in life."

Back in 2022, Charvet told Page Six he left the spotlight so that he could reinvent himself as "the father I wanted to be."

"Before I had my first child, I was traveling for five years in 42 countries doing concerts for my music," he told the outlet at the time. "There’s no way I could do that again. I had to find a different meaning to my life."

"I didn’t want to go and take a TV show that was in Canada, I didn’t want to travel to Europe to do my music," he continued. "I wanted to stay home, and I wanted to be a good dad. I wanted to be there for my children every single day."

WATCH: ‘BAYWATCH’ STAR NICOLE EGGERT ON HOW CELEBRITY LIFE IN THE 90S DIFFERS FROM BEING FAMOUS TODAY

Charvet starred in "Baywatch" alongside David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson and Yasmine Bleeth from 1992 until 1996. His last credited role was 2013’s "Prisoners of the Sun."

Charvet admitted that at first, he mourned the loss of his decades-long career.

"There was also a sense of sadness because I really loved what I did for 20 years," he said.

LIKE WHAT YOU’RE READING? "I’m a service person. I’m no longer the star."

Democrats project doom and gloom, not celebration, with July 4 messages

Several prominent Democrats, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Barack Obama, drew the public's ire with pessimistic social media messages on July 4.

Prominent Democrats sent messages of doom and gloom rather than celebration on July 4, drawing ire from a multitude of critics. Many of the messages included warnings about supposed threats to the country emanating from the Trump administration.

"This Fourth of July, I am taking a moment to reflect. Things are hard right now. They are probably going to get worse before they get better," former Vice President Kamala Harris wrote in a post on X that included a photo of her and former second gentleman Doug Emhoff at the White House. "But I love our country — and when you love something, you fight for it. Together, we will continue to fight for the ideals of our nation."

Many social media users were quick to point out that Harris cropped former President Joe Biden and former first lady Jill Biden out of the photo. Others took one of Harris’ famous phrases to mock her, saying that the country was "unburdened by what has been."

THE LEFT IS CELEBRATING JULY 4 WITH PROTESTS WHILE THE RIGHT SEES A PATRIOTIC REVIVAL

Harris’ old boss, former President Joe Biden, posted a more mild message, while also encouraging Americans to "fight to maintain" democracy.

Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama also chimed in with a warning of his own, saying that "core democratic principles seem to be continuously under attack." He argued that the word "we" is the "single most powerful word in our democracy," and used his first presidential campaign slogan as one of his examples.

KAMALA HARRIS COMES KNIVES OUT AGAINST TRUMP IN FIRST SPEECH SINCE LEAVING OFFICE: ‘ABSOLUTE CHAOS’

"Independence Day is a reminder that America is not the project of any one person. The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word ‘We.’ ‘We The People.’ ‘We Shall Overcome.’ ‘Yes We Can.’ America is owned by no one. It belongs to all citizens. And at this moment in history—when core democratic principles seem to be continuously under attack, when too many people around the world have become cynical and disengaged—now is precisely the time to ask ourselves tough questions about how we can build our democracies and make them work in meaningful and practical ways for ordinary people," Obama wrote.

Xi Van Fleet, a survivor of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, responded saying, "We the People are taking our country back from those like you who despise America and work tirelessly to dismantle everything it stands for."

Sen. Bernie Sanders appeared to support the anti-Trump "No Kings" movement in his July 4 post.

"On July 4, 1776, Americans said: No to Kings, No to Despotism. On July 4, 2025, all across the country, Americans say again: No to Kings, No to Despotism," Sanders wrote.

In response, several social media users pointed out that, unlike a king, President Donald Trump was elected.

Ghost town brought back to life is now a thriving tourist magnet thanks to street murals

A small town in Italy has transformed itself from a declining community to vibrant tourist destination with 140 colorful murals, bringing new businesses through an annual street art festival.

An abandoned ghost town in southern Italy has come back to life thanks to over 140 vibrant murals that have turned the area into a street art hotspot.

The region's population had been shrinking as young people left for jobs and fewer babies were born there, news agency SWNS reported.

Local artist Lino Lombardi, 57, grew frustrated as he saw his hometown crumble — and launched Stramurales, an annual street art festival, in 2017.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS UNCOVER LONG-LOST ANCIENT ROMAN BUILDING AT CONSTRUCTION SITE WITH A LITTLE HELP

"At first people thought I was crazy, but I couldn’t just watch the town fade away," said Lombardi. "I started looking at the walls as blank canvases, which could be turned into something beautiful."

The festival invited artists worldwide to paint murals, with six created at the first event in 2018.

Today, more than 140 murals can be seen around Stornara, in the Puglia region, with inspiring themes represented each year, including agriculture, migration within Italy and local life. Residents vote on the topics each year.

Tourism has surged 25% since 2020, SWNS said, sparking the opening of eight new businesses, including restaurants and B&Bs.

The population has stopped shrinking and is slowly growing again as young families move back, according to locals.

ANCIENT ROMAN THEATER DISCOVERED BENEATH TOWN HALL THANKS TO MASSIVE EARTHQUAKES

Café owner Antonio Maglione was about to close his business before the murals brought in crowds that made him learn to speak the word "welcome" in five different languages.

"The murals saved my business, but more than that, they saved our community," Maglione said.

Rita Gensano returned after spending 20 years away.

She said initially, she felt like she’d walked into a ghost town.

"It felt like a sacrifice," she said. "But it has become something extraordinary."

Now a tour guide, she called Stornara "the coolest town in Italy."

ARCHAEOLOGISTS UNEARTH STRANGE HEAD DEPICTING ROMAN GOD BENEATH CATHOLIC BASILICA

Retired olive farmer Salvatore Nappi said the murals helped residents regain their pride.

"We had lost our pride, but the murals reminded us that our town and our stories are worth celebrating," SWNS reported.

Lombardi founded a nonprofit that runs art workshops for high school students to keep the creative spirit alive.

CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER

"Art doesn't just decorate our walls, it reminds us that even small places can dream big," Lombardi said.

Other struggling towns have asked for help after Stornara’s success, SWNS reported.

For more Lifestyle articles, visit foxnews.com/lifestyle

"We never planned to be a case study, but if our experience can help other communities, that’s even more meaningful," Lombardi said.

The 2025 Stramurales festival is featuring artists from every continent for the first time.

'Young Washington' historical epic hitting theaters Independence Day, 2026

A historical epic chronicling the life of America's first president will hit theaters next Independence Day, Angel Studios and Wonder Project announced.

"Young Washington," an upcoming biopic chronicling the origins of the first president of the United States, is set to release in theaters on July 4, 2026.

"Set against the frontier of colonial America, this film brings to life the untold origin story of a 21-year-old George Washington—long before the Revolution, long before the Constitution—when a single mistake nearly cost him everything," the film’s description says.

"After triggering the start of the French and Indian War, Washington must reckon with personal failure, devastating loss, and the weight of responsibility. What emerges from the ashes isn’t just a military leader—but a man forged by humility, courage, and conviction."

The project is a collaboration between faith-based Angel Studios and Wonder Project and will be directed by Jon Erwin, the filmmaker behind the hit 2023 film, "Jesus Revolution," and Amazon Prime’s streaming series, "House of David."

KELSEY GRAMMER WARNS AMERICA COULD LOSE 'EXTRAORDINARY GIFT' IF WE FORGET WHO WE ARE

Erwin said he was excited to share the story he’s been waiting for over a decade to tell.

"I’ve dreamed of telling the powerful origin story of George Washington for nearly a decade," Erwin said in a press release. "It’s a story of a true pioneer, which makes it the perfect project to partner on with the pioneers at Angel and their world-class distribution network. ‘Young Washington’ isn’t just a film—it’s a celebration of the American spirit and the miracle of the forging of our nation."

The historical epic’s release will coincide with America's 250th anniversary. Erwin said filming will begin this summer.

HIT FILMMAKER LAUNCHES STUDIO FOR FAITH AUDIENCES: ‘WE WANT TO FLOOD THE WORLD WITH HOPE’

Jordan Harmon, president of Angel Studios, who will distribute the film, said: "Our shared commitment to inspirational, powerful storytelling made ‘Young Washington’ an easy project to partner on with Wonder."

"George Washington helped shape our nation and so many of the American values we hold dear. I can’t imagine a more meaningful way to celebrate America’s 250th birthday than by watching this adaptation of such a pivotal period in his young life."

CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTURE

Angel Studios announced that tickets are available for pre-order now.

Jason Kelce slammed for 'tone deaf' Fourth of July post after 'big, beautiful bill' signing

Jason Kelce posted an homage to the Fourth of July, but his message was quickly blasted amid political tensions around the "big, beautiful bill."

Jason Kelce was just like plenty of Americans on the Fourth of July, taking in some of the best fireworks.

However, when the Philadelphia Eagles legend took to social media to celebrate, he was met with plenty of vitriol.

"Man I love the 4th! One of the great days we all can set aside our differences in this country, and enjoy the one thing we all share in common. That we are American! Cheers to you oh beautiful America," Kelce wrote in an Instagram post of a video of some fireworks.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Almost immediately, he was ripped in the comments.

Kelce's post came hours after President Donald Trump signed the "big, beautiful bill," which seemed to be the catalyst for the backlash in the former NFL player's comment section.

"Set aside differences? One party wants to feed children. The other wants to feed brown people to alligators," one person wrote.

"Unfortunately Jason this is not real life for many. They signed the worst bill for so many Americans today just to rub it in our faces. I know it’s hard to understand, but so many will suffer," another added.

Another user called his post "tone deaf."

"love u bud but this is so out of touch, i beg you please read the room rn. so many are suffering," added another.

One more user said there is "nothing beautiful about this country right now."

The post had over 2,000 comments at the time of publishing. His three previous posts combined for just over 1,000 comments.

The Kelces have normally been silent about their political beliefs, but Travis Kelce's girlfriend, Taylor Swift, endorsed Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election.

Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Browns' Deshaun Watson gets married to longtime girlfriend: 'We sailing away'

Before the NFL season, Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson got married to his longtime girlfriend and celebrated on a boat in Miami.

Deshaun Watson has a ring before the 2025 season even starts.

The Cleveland Browns quarterback tied the knot with longtime girlfriend, Jilly Anais, earlier this week.

The couple posted their wedding bands on social media, via the New York Post. Watson's shirt had the date of "07.02.25" stitched on his wrist.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

The couple took a boat trip around Miami with some close family members to celebrate the marriage.

The Watsons got engaged this past March.

They posted a video to Instagram of themselves dancing outside their car on the road on Friday.

"We sailing away," they wrote.

After rupturing his right Achilles tendon for the second time in three months, it remains unclear whether Watson will miss out on the entire 2025 season. He was initially injured during an October game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he later ruptured his Achilles for a second time in January.

BROWNS RESTRUCTURE DESHAUN WATSON'S CONTRACT FOR 2ND TIME IN 3 MONTHS TO CLEAR CAP SPACE

Earlier this month, the Browns reworked Watson’s contract to clear more cap space before the start of the new league year. According to the Associated Press, the restructuring cleared up nearly $36 million in cap space.

It was the second time in three months that the team restructured his lucrative contract.

Watson was acquired by the Browns in 2022 after he signed a fully guaranteed $230 million contract. But the 29-year-old quarterback has only appeared in 19 games for the team after he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in 2023 and an Achilles tendon injury this past season.

He was also suspended for 13 games due to sexual misconduct allegations during his time with the Houston Texans, and he hadn't played the entire 2021 season.

Cleveland made several moves regarding the quarterback position, trading for Kenny Pickett, bringing back Joe Flacco, and drafting both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.

Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Dodgers broadcaster Orel Hershiser brings up Astros sign-stealing scandal in Houston's historic rout over LA

The Los Angeles Dodgers' 18-1 loss to the Astros on Friday night seemed so unbelievable to broadcaster Orel Hershiser that he seemed to suggest that the batters "know what is coming."

Los Angeles Dodgers pitching great Orel Hershiser opened up old wounds on Friday night when he brought up the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal during the team's historic 18-1 rout at Dodger Stadium.

The Astros put on a show in Friday night’s series opener between the two teams and handed Los Angeles its worst loss in the history of Dodger Stadium. The beatdown was so bad that Hershiser, now a broadcaster for the Dodgers, seemed to suggest foul play.

"I don’t want to open an old wound, but in some ways, they’re swinging at these breaking balls like they know what is coming," Hershiser said in the third inning after Astros outfielder Cam Smith doubled off Dodgers rookie Ben Casparius in the third inning.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS

Hershiser was referring to the Astros' 2017 World Series win over the Dodgers. It was later revealed that Houston was stealing signs with the help of video and relaying pitches to batters by banging on a trash can.

Jose Altuve, who was a member of that championship-winning team, was met with relentless "cheater" chants and boos during his at-bats. But the home crowd didn’t distract him as he homered twice while reaching base five times and driving in five runs.

DODGERS' CLAYTON KERSHAW JOINS ELITE GROUP IN MLB HISTORY AFTER REACHING 3,000 CAREER STRIKEOUTS

"Yea, that was one you want to flush as soon as possible. I don’t think there were many positives from this night," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said bluntly of the 17-deficit loss.

"I don’t think Ben [Casparius]was good tonight. It seemed like they were on everything he threw tonight."

Caparius allowed six runs and nine hits in three innings and struck out three.

Roberts said on Friday that Caparius will likely make his return to the bullpen.

"At the end of the day, he's just got to execute better. There might have been 60 throws tonight, and probably only a handful executed where he wanted them to be. And that's tough to do," he said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

New York Times columnist admits that Trump is a 'normie Republican'

Trump's tax cuts, foreign policy and governance style reveal him to be a 'normie Republican' rather than a political outlier, according to NYT columnist Jamelle Bouie.

New York Times opinion columnist Jamelle Bouie argued on Wednesday that President Donald Trump is much more of a "normie Republican" than both his supporters and critics may lead one to believe.

Bouie's opinion piece, titled, "Face It. Trump Is a Normie Republican," contended that Trump has governed as a "mostly orthodox Republican" over the duration of his second term, and compared his first term to a hypothetical third George W. Bush presidency.

"Perhaps the most underappreciated fact about President Trump is that he is a Republican," Bouie stated, noting that "nearly every commentator under the sun" has considered Trump to be unique "in ways that defy traditional categorization."

TRUMP TAKES AIM AT CNN AND NEW YORK TIMES OVER IRAN STRIKE COVERAGE, BUT JOURNALISTS ARE SHRUGGING

The columnist pushed back on the notion that Trump cannot be considered a typical Republican due to his uniqueness, arguing that the "most salient detail" about the current president is that he's a "Republican politician committed to the success of the Republican Party and its ideological vision."

"We saw this in his first term, with his signature legislative accomplishment, the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Was this his promised transformation of the American economy, the populist blow for those Americans left behind by the nation’s failed political and economic leadership?" he questioned. "No, it was a massive upper-income tax cut designed to pay huge benefits to the wealthiest Americans, including the president, his family and their friends."

Bouie continued, listing off actions taken by Trump during his first term, summarizing that, in short, "Trump governed like a Republican."

"And it is not a stretch to say that much of his first term was, on the domestic front, more or less indistinguishable from a hypothetical third term for the previous Republican president, George W. Bush. Trump even ended his term, as Bush did, with a rolling set of crises and disasters, each exacerbated by his mismanagement," he added.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTURE

The columnist claimed that Trump's "big, beautiful, bill" lines up with "what any Republican president would do," but has been cloaked in "the rhetoric of populism" by the president.

As far as Trump's foreign policy goes, Bouie argued that the president's recent strike on Iran's nuclear facilities was reminiscent of the foreign policy of two former Republicans.

"With one decision, Trump fulfilled the dreams of a generation of Republican hawks who have been clamoring for war with — and regime change in — Iran since President Bush proclaimed that it was a member of the ‘axis of evil’ in 2002. You could, if you were so inclined, draw a straight line from that speech to John McCain’s ‘bomb Iran’ quips in 2007 to Trump’s appointment of Mike Pompeo, a noted Iran antagonist, as secretary of state in 2018 to his airstrike last month," he claimed.

The columnist concluded that some of the "worst" aspects of the Trump administration can be chalked up to the "specific authoritarian vision" of the president and his allies — but for the most part — this is "simply what happens when you elect a Republican to the White House."

Xi Jinping’s surprise no-show at BRICS Summit fuels speculation about China's global standing

Xi Jinping skips BRICS Summit for the first time amid speculation of political turbulence in China and divisions between member nations over trade and strategic interests

Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend this week’s BRICS Summit in Brazil, marking the first time the Chinese leader has missed the gathering of major emerging economies. The abrupt decision has triggered widespread speculation about internal political dynamics within China and the fraying cohesion of BRICS itself.

China’s official explanation — a "scheduling conflict" and the fact that Xi already met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva earlier this year, according to the South China Morning Post — has been met with skepticism. Premier Li Qiang will attend the summit in Xi’s place, continuing a recent trend of Xi scaling back his appearances on the global stage.

"That doesn’t make sense," said Gordon Chang, an expert on U.S.-China relations. "There are many other countries at the BRICS summit, not just Brazil. To me, it’s extremely significant that Xi Jinping is not going. It suggests turbulence at home — there are signs he’s lost control of the military and that civilian rivals are reasserting power. This is a symptom of that."

RUSSIA'S PUTIN HOSTS CHINA'S XI AT MASSIVE MOSCOW MILITARY PARADE ON RED SQUARE

Bryan Burack of the Heritage Foundation agrees that Xi’s absence underscores deeper issues: "It’s another indication that BRICS is not going to be China’s vassalization of the Global South." He noted that countries like Brazil and Indonesia have recently imposed tariffs on China over industrial overcapacity and dumping, moves that suggest widening rifts within the group.

"China is actively harming all those countries for the most part, maybe with some exceptions, through its malign trade policies and dumping and overcapacity."

Some analysts point to rising China-India friction as a contributing factor in Xi’s decision to skip the summit.

"China has been at war with India for decades, essentially," Burack said. "These are fundamentally opposing interests. It’s difficult to see China changing its behavior in the near term, and that will keep tensions high."

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to take a leading role at the gathering, potentially another deterrent for Xi’s attendance.

Another key leader — Russian President Vladimir Putin — is only expected to address the group by video.

AFTER TRUMP'S DEPARTURE, G7 LEADERS FAIL TO REACH AGREEMENTS ON KEY ISSUES

Formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China and later joined by South Africa, BRICS was envisioned as a non-Western counterweight to G7 dominance. It has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and, most recently, Indonesia, strengthening its economic footprint.

Economist Christian Briggs highlighted BRICS’s massive scale: "BRICS now comprises 12 full members and up to 23 when counting partners. Collectively, they account for over 60% of the world’s GDP and around 75% of the global population. They control vast natural resources and a growing share of global trade flows."

Yet despite its scale, the bloc remains ideologically and strategically fragmented. "It’s a group of countries that hate each other," Burack said bluntly. "China is harming many of them through unfair trade practices. There’s not a lot of incentive for real unity."

The alliance’s aspirations to challenge the U.S. dollar through alternative payment systems and a potential BRICS currency have gained media traction — but experts caution against overestimating this threat.

"There’s been a lot of fearmongering about a BRICS currency," said Burack. "But the interests of these countries are completely divergent. There’s more smoke than fire when it comes to a currency challenge to the dollar."

Chang echoed this skepticism: "The only country that can challenge the dollar is the United States. Weakness in the dollar is due to what we are doing domestically, not what the BRICS are doing."

Still, Briggs offered a counterpoint, arguing that BRICS members are already reshaping global currency flows.

"They’re moving away from the dollar into digital yuan, rupees, rubles. China has launched a SWIFT alternative already adopted by the Caribbean banking sector — trillions of dollars are shifting."

MACRON CHIDES TRUMP, CHINA OVER TRADE, UKRAINE, GAZA: POLICIES 'WILL KILL GLOBAL ORDER'

While its cohesion remains questionable, BRICS poses a long-term challenge to U.S. influence — particularly in regions where Washington has retreated diplomatically and economically.

"China filled the void left by the U.S. in places like Africa," said Briggs. "Now it controls about 38% of the world’s minerals. Meanwhile, Russia’s economy has doubled despite sanctions, because they preemptively reduced reliance on the dollar."

Yet Chang sees India as a brake on any aggressive anti-Western tilt. "BRICS has an ‘I’ in it—and that’s India. Modi doesn’t want to be part of an anti-Western bloc. As long as India’s in BRICS, the rest of the world is safe."

To some, Xi's no-show signals instability in Beijing. To others, the opposite: it demonstrates confidence in China's dominance over the other BRICS members.

"He doesn’t have to be there," Briggs contended. "Xi’s power allows him to delegate. China is trading with nearly 80% of the world now. He’s moving the agenda forward even in absentia."

What’s clear is that BRICS continues to evolve — its internal contradictions as visible as its geopolitical ambitions. Whether Xi's absence marks a retreat or a recalibration remains one of the key questions hovering over the summit in Brazil.

120,000 fake sites fuel Amazon Prime Day scams

Amazon Prime Day shoppers face threats from 120,000-plus scam websites as cybercriminals prepare phishing traps and malware ahead of the July sales event.

As millions prepare to snag the best deals during Amazon Prime Day, cybercriminals are preparing too, just not in the way you'd hope.

Security researchers have uncovered more than 120,000 fake Amazon websites designed to scam excited shoppers during the retail giant's annual shopping event.

With sales set to begin July 8 and run through July 11, the timing couldn't be more sinister. These scam websites, filled with phishing traps, malware and fake products, were created in the past two months, just in time for the Prime Day rush.

GRAB PRIME DAY DEALS EARLY: SMART HOME DEVICES, KITCHEN APPLIANCES, CLOTHES AND SHOES FOR LESS THAN $50

Amazon Prime Day is one of the most anticipated online shopping events of the year, and that makes it a goldmine for scammers. Cybercriminals know shoppers are often in a hurry, eager to grab deals before they disappear. That urgency can lead to poor judgment and careless clicks.

Amazon is actively fighting back against these threats. In 2024, the company initiated takedowns of more than 55,000 phishing websites and 12,000 phone numbers used in impersonation schemes. Amazon also partners with law enforcement agencies around the world to ensure scammers are held accountable, referring hundreds of bad actors to authorities for further investigation and prosecution. But the AI-amplified threats are coming faster than ever, which means you need to be more vigilant than ever when shopping for deals.

While Amazon hasn't released a formal statement yet, the company maintains ongoing efforts to detect and remove fraudulent listings and suspicious domains. Amazon also reminds customers that it will never ask for payment via email or phone, nor request gift cards as a form of payment. Even so, the burden of protection often falls on consumers. Knowing what to watch for can make all the difference.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

Staying safe during Prime Day means slowing down and thinking before you click. Below are key ways to protect your personal and financial information from Amazon Prime Day scams.

Always make your purchases through Amazon.com or the official Amazon app. Avoid clicking on links from texts, emails, social media posts or pop-up ads, even if they appear to come from Amazon. Scammers often use lookalike pages to steal your information. The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.

Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices at CyberGuy.com/LockUpYourTech.

Amazon will never call and ask for your login credentials, passwords or personal details. If you get a call that pressures you to "verify your account," hang up. It's a scam.

No legitimate Amazon representative will ask you to pay using gift cards. If someone instructs you to buy a gift card and to send them the code, it's 100% a scam. End the conversation immediately.

Scammers create fake websites with small, easy-to-miss spelling differences, like arnazon.com or amaz0n-sale.com. Before you enter any sensitive info, take a second to look closely at the web address.

If you encounter a scam attempt, report it to Amazon through their official support page. You can also report phishing sites to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Reporting helps shut down fraud faster.

Make sure your Amazon account uses a strong, unique password that you don't use anywhere else. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords. Also, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your Amazon account for an extra layer of security.

Get more details about my best expert-reviewed Password Managers of 2025 at Cyberguy.com/Passwords.

Regularly update your computer, smartphone, and the Amazon app to patch security vulnerabilities. Cybercriminals often exploit outdated software to gain access.

Public Wi-Fi networks can be insecure. Try to shop on Amazon using your private, secure internet connection rather than public Wi-Fi to reduce the risk of data interception.

After making purchases, keep an eye on your financial statements for any unauthorized or suspicious charges. Early detection can minimize damage.

If a deal looks unbelievably cheap or comes from an unfamiliar seller, double-check the product reviews and seller ratings on Amazon. Scammers often lure buyers with unrealistic prices.

Amazon Prime Day scams are growing more sophisticated, and the sheer scale of fake websites, over 120,000, is alarming. But by staying alert, verifying websites, and following safe shopping habits, you can protect yourself and still take advantage of the sales. Remember, if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Pause, check, and think before you click, and you'll stay one step ahead of the scammers.

Who do you think should be doing more to protect shoppers from Amazon Prime Day scams, Amazon, the government, or the shoppers themselves?

How sensationalized headlines about 'brain plastic' are undermining trust in safe, sustainable materials

Microplastics research faces standardization challenges as viral headlines about "plastic in your brain" overshadow scientific nuance, while FDA finds no evidence of health risks.

Earlier this year, a terrifying claim swept headlines and social media: "You have a spoon’s worth of plastic in your brain."

The warning, based on a study published in Nature Medicine, set off a cultural firestorm, dominating news cycles, TikToks and dinner table conversations. It was the kind of phrase designed to go viral, and it did.

But here’s what didn’t go viral: the follow-up.

Experts later flagged the study for a critical flaw: To quantify microplastics in samples, the study relied on equipment with limitations in distinguishing plastics from other materials, leading to potential false positives.

WHY ARE MAJOR MUSEUMS PUSHING CLIMATE CHANGE INSTEAD OF CELEBRATING THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA?

An independent expert noted: "The method is lauded for its ability to detect smaller micro- and nanoplastics than other methods can, but it will give you a lot of false positives if you do not adequately remove biological material from the sample. Most of the presumed plastic they found is polyethylene, which to me really indicates that they didn’t really clean up their samples properly."

The nuance, though important, didn’t make the headlines.

This highlights a broader issue: there’s no globally standardized methods for the collection, detection and quantification of microplastics. Some microplastics studies may fail to identify whether the particle is a mineral, an organic material or something else, yet still misidentify them and claim they are microplastics.

And without standardized methodologies for identifying and quantifying the different types of particles, it is difficult to generate reliable data and assess their true impact.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states, "While there are many studies on microplastics in food, the current state of science is limited in its ability to inform regulatory risk assessment… due to several factors, including a continued lack of standardized definitions, reference materials, sample collection and preparation procedures, and appropriate quality controls, to name a few."

ALASKA’S OIL RESERVES ARE AMERICA’S NATIONAL SECURITY SHIELD

Yet recent coverage has prioritized drama over scientific nuance, creating confusion rather than clarity.

Let’s be clear: microplastics are real. Everyday life, from tire dust to synthetic fibers, produces these particles. They’re in the environment and potentially our bodies. But presence alone doesn’t constitute a crisis.

The real question is what this means for human health and how to respond responsibly. The FDA has made clear that "current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that levels of microplastics or nanoplastics detected in foods pose a risk to human health."

When we treat preliminary research as settled science – or worse, viral clickbait – we lose the ability to make smart decisions. This is particularly true in the case of materials like PET, the plastic used in food packaging, water bottles and medical supplies. PET is among the safest, most rigorously tested plastics, approved globally by regulators including the FDA and EFSA.

Why is this misinformation dangerous? Because it undermines trust in safe and sustainable materials like PET, which is both lightweight and recyclable.

MARIJUANA IS NOT HARMLESS. THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE AND THE EVIDENCE KEEPS GROWING

According to life cycle assessments (LCA), a PET bottle produces significantly lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than alternative containers like glass bottles or aluminum cans, and requires less energy to produce. It enables safe hydration, reduces food waste and makes modern healthcare possible.

Yet consumers increasingly question PET, not because science changed, but because headlines did. That disconnect carries real-world consequences.

This is exactly why it is so important for our regulatory agencies to step up and address the lack of standardization in microplastics research and to develop methods and standards that allow for consistent and comparable results in research. Only then will we be able to have a more disciplined public conversation around microplastics that we can be confident is based on dependable evidence, and which stops the confusion of comparing apples to oranges.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION

None of this is to dismiss the broader challenge of plastic pollution. Our industry – and society – must invest in better systems: smarter product design, stronger recycling infrastructure and more rigorous scientific research. But meaningful progress starts with clarity, not confusion.

The public deserves facts. Not just headlines.

ESPN analyst slammed for saying Fever is 'more dangerous' without Caitlin Clark amid injury absence

Controversy erupted after an ESPN analyst suggested the Indiana Fever performs better without injured star Caitlin Clark, despite stats suggesting the contrary.

Amid Caitlin Clark's extended injury absence from the Indiana Fever, at least one media pundit has suggested the team is better without the superstar.

ESPN's Carolyn Peck said on the network on Thursday that Indiana is a "more dangerous" team without Clark on the floor.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

"I think that Indiana is even more dangerous when Caitlin Clark doesn’t play, because she’s a ball-dominant guard," she said. "The ball’s in her hands a lot, so you know what you need to try to take away. But when you look at Indiana now, they’ve got so many weapons."

Peck gave specific praise to Fever players Kelsey Mitchell, Aari McDonald and Aliyah Boston. Peck did not appear to give praise to Fever stars Sophie Cunningham or Lexie Hull.

"When you have a point guard like Kelsey Mitchell, and Aari McDonald making plays on the perimeter, and a post like Aliyah Boston, I’m gonna tell you: Indiana, they are a threat. And it’s specifically on the defensive end," Peck said.

Peck's comments went viral on social media, inciting the wrath of Clark's loyal supporters.

Barstool founder Dave Portnoy reposted the clip of Peck's comments on X, writing, "I knew this was gonna happen."

The popular sports commentary X account "BricksCenter" also shared the clip, writing, "Their hatred toward CC needs to be studied."

Hundreds of smaller accounts made their criticisms of Peck's analysis known.

WNBA ROOKIE PAIGE BUECKERS SAYS MEDIA 'TRIES TO ISOLATE' IN RESPONSE TO PAST COMMENTS ABOUT BLACK WOMEN

"ESPN would be a lot more 'dangerous' without Carolyn Peck," one user wrote.

Another user wrote, "All of Peck's takes on CC last year ended being wrong and I don't expect anything different from this season."

One user even went so far as to say, "ESPN analyst Carolyn Peck is a hater and a fool."

Peck was the women's basketball head coach at Purdue when current Fever head coach Stephanie White was a player there. Together, they won the NCAA title in 1999.

Clark has missed the team's last four games with a groin injury and will miss a fifth on Saturday against the LA Sparks. She previously missed five games with a quad injury.

With Clark, Indiana is 5–4, averaging an 85.0 offensive rating.

Without Clark, the team is 5–4 with an average 80.2 offensive rating.

In games she has played, Clark is averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists and 5.9 turnovers.

Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

North Carolina governor vetoes Republican-led anti DEI and trans legislation

Gov. Josh Stein has vetoed four bills that target diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and transgender policies, setting up a political clash with the Republican-led General Assembly.

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein has vetoed four controversial bills that target diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and transgender policies, setting up a political clash with the Republican-led General Assembly.

Stein, a Democrat, blasted the three DEI-focused bills as being "mean-spirited" that would "marginalize vulnerable people" and took aim at Republicans who failed to pass a fiscal budget for the year that just began.

The DEI bills ought to ban DEI training, hiring practices and staff positions in state and local governments as well as outlawing the use of state funds for DEI programming. The legislation would have imposed civil penalties on workers who violate the rules. No Democrats supported the three DEI bills.

NORTH CAROLINA PROFESSOR WHO WAGED 'WAR ON DEI' AT UNIVERSITY TOUTS WIN

"At a time when teachers, law enforcement, and state employees need pay raises, and people need shorter lines at the DMV, the legislature failed to pass a budget and, instead, wants to distract us by stoking culture wars that further divide us," Stein said in a statement.

"These mean-spirited bills would marginalize vulnerable people and also undermine the quality of public services and public education. Therefore, I am vetoing them. "My faith teaches me that we are all children of God no matter our differences and that it is wrong to target vulnerable people, as this bill does," he added.

One Democrat backed the fourth bill before Stein vetoed it.
