45.
In recent days, a public hearing in Congress detailed that the underground gambling sector is believed to generate around R$35 billion ($6.4 billion) per year. That is thought to equal around half of all online gambling activity in Brazil.

 46.
There was a consensus at the hearing that the primary challenge facing the South American nation was not the regulated gambling industry, but the proliferation of illegal platforms, and the absence of any controls or player protections.

 47.
As with all underground gambling networks, the government in Brazil does not receive any tax revenues from these operations.

 48.
Participants at the hearing included the Brazilian Institute for Responsible Gambling (IBJR), together with lawmakers, industry representatives, and other authority bodies.

 49.
Fernando Vieira, CEO of the IBJR, noted that the illegal market’s revenue rivals the legal market’s R$38 billion figure, causing the government to lose approximately R$10.8 billion ($2 billion) in tax revenue annually due to untaxed operations.

 50.
The discussion placed great emphasis on the fact that illegal platforms operate without any oversight, age controls, or user protections, which only increases the risks of underage gambling, fraud, and other illicit activity.

 51.
Last month, the IBJR presented new data showing that the Central West region uses illegal betting platforms more than anywhere else.

 52.
Call to suffocate the financial operations of illegal gambling operators in Brazil

 53.
Since last year, authorities in Brazil are estimated to have blocked around 17,000 unauthorized websites, averaging over 1,700 per month.

 54.
However, the Brazil Congress hearing was told that efforts must be increased to combat the illegal market, especially with the funds that are collected from the regulated sector.

 55.
Deputy Caio Vianna, the President of the Subcommittee, who initiated the hearing, called for “financial suffocation” of illegal operators by targeting their payment methods, as shutting down websites alone is insufficient due to their ability to quickly relocate under another jurisdiction.

 56.
There was also significant opposition expressed toward the proposed measure, currently under review in the Brazil Congress, to increase the tax on gross gaming revenue from 12% to 18%, which the IBJR warns could weaken the legal market and create further momentum for the growth of illegal platforms.

 57.
IBJR chief Viera added, “This is a turning point. If Brazil shifts just 5 percentage points from the illegal to the regulated market, the additional revenue could reach R$1 billion per year.

 58.
“The solution is not to hastily increase taxes, but rather to invest in oversight, monitor financial transactions, certify suppliers, and raise consumer awareness. Only then will we reduce the scale of illegality and consolidate a strong and sustainable regulated sector.”

 78.
The initiative will establish a Problem Gambling Resource Center (PRGC) on-site to promote responsible gambling, but primarily, to support and advise users impacted by problem gambling activity.

 80.
Users experiencing difficulty will have access to interactive kiosks, educational videos on responsible gaming, and trained professionals on hand to provide free, confidential services to help address their needs.

 139.
The seasoned sports media reporter’s partnership is set to include the second season of his podcast, ‘Why is Draymond Green Talking About Football? with Jordan Schultz’ and the launch of his new YouTube show, ‘The Schultz Report’. Both are designed to coincide with the start of the 2025 football season on September 1.

 140.
The Jordan Schultz YouTube channel will feature multiple shows a week, promising ‘behind-the-scenes access to the latest NFL news and player stories’. One of those shows will be ‘The Schultz Report’, where the reporter will host long-form interviews with major football personalities, including Daniel Jones, Tee Higgins, Dan Campbell and more. On Saturdays, the show will offer a quick look at everything fans need to know ahead of the Sunday action.

 141.
The podcast, much like its first season, will see Schultz sit down with NBA icon Draymond Green to interview guests, break down pro-football news, and make their weekend picks in a weekly video podcast.

 142.
“The move from broadcast to YouTube gives me the opportunity to build something truly different and to dive deeper into the stories of the people on the field and sidelines,” said Schultz in a public statement. “My goal is to bring fans closer to the game, bridging the gap between the locker room and their living room and better connecting them to the players we love.”

 143.
Jordan Schultz partners with Fanatics Sportsbook

 144.
The expansion of Schultz’s media offering is seemingly supported by his partnership with Fanatics Sportsbook.

 145.
“We are excited to partner with Jordan Schultz as he expands his media properties and launches the second season of his podcast with Draymond Green,” said Selena Kalvaria, CMO of Fanatics Betting and Gaming.

 146.
“Jordan is a fountain of NFL knowledge and audiences will now have more ways to engage with him to hear him break down the news of the day, including his weekly picks on Fanatics Sportsbook.”

 147.
Season two of ‘Why is Draymond Green Talking About Football? with Jordan Schultz’ will kick off on September 4. As part of the partnership with Fanatics Sportsbook, Green and Schultz will make pro football picks every week, available for fans to also make on the Fanatics Sportsbook app, which is available on iOS and Android.

 167.
The cast of bakers hoping to win the fabled cake stand in season 16 of the Great British Bake Off has been revealed. 12 amateur bakers from across the UK will be competing in the upcoming series, kicking off on September 2, 2025.

 168.
There’s already an early favourite to win according to odds from BetIdeas, with 32-year-old Nataliia from Yorkshire opening up as the 5/1 (16% chance) market leader to win the 16th season of the show. Coming in on her heels, Essex-based bridal designer Pui Man was rated with 7/1 odds, placing her with a 13% chance of winning before the first episode.

 169.
Nataliia moved to the UK just four years ago from Ukraine and has been baking since a young age, while Pui Man rediscovered her love for baking during lockdown. Jasmine, Jessika, and Tom are also among the front runners to win the top prize, all in with a chance of 10% at the moment.

 170.
“The cast for Series 16 has been released for The Great British Bake Off, and our traders have placed Nataliia as an early 5/1 favourite before the series has even started,” said BetIdeas spokesman, Shane Orton. “The Ukrainian-born 32-year-old is promising to bring desserts from her homeland with a British twist on them.”

 212.
After several months of investigation, the CCPD, in collaboration with the Florida Gaming Commission (FGC), searched six casinos and one residence under suspicion of illegal gambling casino activity. The department named it ‘one of the first — and largest — operations of its kind in Southwest Florida’. It saw the mobilization of more than 90 members of staff across the seven locations.

 213.
The businesses searched were found to target vulnerable populations, especially elderly people struggling with gambling addictions. The investigations revealed that the casinos were using illegal machines that were deliberately designed to result in consistent losses, exploiting those playing, especially those at greater risk of addiction. Evidence was also found of further illegal activity, such as trafficking narcotics.

 219.
Illegal gambling investigation ongoing

 220.
During the searches, the CCPD investigators seized more than $540,000 in cash and 428 gambling machines. No arrests were made, but the department noted that multiple people of interest were identified. The investigation is determined to still be ongoing, with continued support from the Florida Gaming Commission.

 221.
“This morning’s operation mobilized upwards of 90 members of our staff, reflecting the size and scope of the effort,” said the CCPD in a statement. “The Cape Coral Police Department extends its gratitude to the City of Cape Coral for their continued support in eliminating these illegal establishments.

 222.
“We also recognize the Florida Gaming Commission, whose partnership has been instrumental throughout the course of this investigation.”

 223.
This comes as the latest data shows that nearly one-third of the US gambling market consists of illicit gaming. While much of this activity centers around online gambling, the AGA made special mention of unregistered or unlawful casino machines, making up a substantial sector of the market.

 244.
India’s parliament voted to adopt the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, meaning that money games, including games of skill, have been outlawed.

 245.
Flutter CEO Peter Jackson said he was “extremely disappointed” by the development, while the online gambling giant criticised the “exceptionally short timeframe” from the bill being introduced to parliament to the Presidential assent just two days later.

 246.
Overall, the update represents a threat to the wider fantasy gaming sector, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government taking action due to the risk of financial harm to users.

 247.
Flutter has detailed that Junglee has stopped its real-money activity, with more than 1,100 workers employed by the subsidiary firm.

 248.
The parent company of Paddy Power and Betfair announced a round of job cuts in the United Kingdom in June, and there will be concerns of what impact the new law in India will have on Junglee.

 249.
Law change in India will drive users to black market, says Flutter chief

 250.
Flutter added that its Indian operations were expected to record around $200 million in revenue and $50 million in earnings on adjusted EBITDA this year, but no latest forecast was provided after the Junglee update.

 251.
Company CEO Jackson stated, “I am extremely disappointed with the sudden changes to the regulatory landscape in India.

 252.
“Over the last four years Junglee has invested significantly in its local market, building a workforce of over 1,100 employees to deliver innovative skill-based gaming products to Indian customers. Central to this has been a strategy which prioritizes consumer protections and responsible gaming.

 253.
He continued, “We believe this change will drive customers to the unregulated market, offering limited consumer protections and providing no contribution to the local economy. We believe in regulatory frameworks that put customers first, and are evaluating options to restore skill-based games in the Indian market.”

 254.
As part of this, Flutter has vowed to consult with other parties to build support to return the 70-year-old constitutional protections for skill-based games, but that appears unlikely without a U-turn from the Modi administration.

 274.
The investigation, which started back in June, looked into suspicious betting patterns on Beasley’s prop bets earlier this year, leading to a subsequent lawsuit from his ex-representation agency. The mounting costs led to him getting evicted from his apartment.

 275.
Now, his attorneys, Steve Haney and Mike Schachter, have asserted to ESPN that the shooter is no longer the target of the federal probe. They argue that the far-reaching consequences, both financial and social, facing Beasley should never have happened.

 276.
“Months after this investigation commenced, Malik remains uncharged and is not the target of this investigation,” Haney told the outlet. “An allegation with no charge, indictment or conviction should never have the catastrophic consequence this has caused Malik. This has literally been the opposite of the presumption of innocence.”

 277.
The future of Malik Beasley in the NBA

 278.
As an NBA free agent, all of Beasley’s ongoing negotiations and offers were paused one day before the official start of free agency. This followed rumors that he and the Detroit Pistons were set to agree to a three-year, $42 million contract – a deal that was never finalized due to the lawsuits. However, ESPN reports that several teams have remained in contact with Beasley’s representatives in the months since.

 279.
Some of the teams with the opportunity to sign Beasley to contracts exceeding $7.2 million – the maximum he could re-sign with the Pistons for – include the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, and Washington Wizards.

 280.
During the 2023–24 season, when the allegations were centered, Beasley averaged 11.3 points over 79 games for the Milwaukee Bucks. In the 2024–25 season, he averaged 16.3 points across the 82 games he played.

 301.
VGW, parent company of Chumba Casino and Global Poker, will pull out of the Canadian market from October 23 onwards. This will allow the company to focus on the more lucrative US market – despite more and more states banning sweepstakes casino games. Players have already been informed of the upcoming change.

 302.
This comes after VGW reported $6.13 billion in total global revenue and $491.6 million in profits at the end of the 2024/25 fiscal year on June 30, 2025.

 304.
“We can confirm that following careful consideration, we’ve informed players of a decision to phase out our brands that offer products in Canada (Chumba Casino and Global Poker),” a VGW spokesperson told ReadWrite. “We understand this is an adjustment after many years and our valued Canadian players may be disappointed.

 305.
“This decision wasn’t taken lightly and our focus is on ensuring players are fully informed about the changes, and that this transition is as smooth as possible.

 306.
“Ultimately, this is a difficult but strategic, isolated decision. Our Canadian business is relatively small, as the vast majority of our players reside in the larger US market, where we will concentrate our management focus, resources and investment going forward.”

 307.
VGW in the United States

 308.
There are various legal obstacles facing VGW at the moment, with lawsuits in progress and an announcement back in May that the company would be reeling back sweepstakes games in New York, followed by ceasing operations in New Jersey a few months later in July.

 309.
Such issues are perhaps what the company wants to focus its “management focus, resources and investment” in the future. Legal battles and lobbying for support are expensive pursuits, which could be more easily pursued with funds freed up from pulling out of Canada.

 331.
With Ohio boasting one of the biggest legal sports betting markets in the US, sportsbook operators have now been warned by the Ohio Casino Control Commission about working with or incorporating prediction markets into their services. Dated to August 25 and seen by The Closing Line, the letter highlighted that any prediction market requires a proper license and vetting to operate within the state.

 332.

 333.
“Any business relationship between an Ohio sports gaming licensee (including its related entities or those under common ownership) with any entit(ies) offering or facilitating the offering of unlicensed sports gaming in Ohio calls into question the reputation of the licensee and the integrity of sports gaming in Ohio.” – Ohio Casino Control Commission

 334.

 335.
However, the letter left it unclear whether getting a second license would be required for prediction markets, or whether operators with an existing license could look into prediction markets under that same one.

 336.
This could even affect operators who are using prediction markets in other states, with the letter stating that restricting the use of such markets to residents of Ohio “may not alleviate the suitability concern,” depending on the circumstances.

 337.
“Any business relationship between an Ohio sports gaming licensee (including its related entities or those under common ownership) with any entit(ies) offering or facilitating the offering of unlicensed sports gaming in Ohio calls into question the reputation of the licensee and the integrity of sports gaming in Ohio,” the letter, signed by Matthew Schuler, the OCCC’s executive director, stated.

 338.
This comes as Ohio Governor Mike DeWine called on the Casino Control Commission to ban prop bets, asking that they be taken off the list of wagers operators are legally allowed to offer.

 339.
The ever-growing world of prediction markets

 340.
This comes after one of the biggest prediction markets, Kalshi, recently forayed into sports betting earlier this month. Another sports betting giant, FanDuel, has also shown interest in getting into the world of prediction markets, with rumors about a potential partnership between it and Kalshi circulating.

 341.
Indeed, the competition around prediction markets has been heating up in recent months. If the Ohio Casino Control Commission takes a stronger stance on the issue, with the power of its large sports betting audience, it could represent a major obstacle for the growing sector to overcome.

 359.
It’s a new experience for players, with the brand having just expanded into its third major jurisdiction, all in the space of just a few months.

 360.
While the addition doesn’t take away from the physical offerings at the brick and mortar casinos, it does represent a push towards adopting digital products at a time when the industry needs to keep up with moving attitudes, preferences, and interests.

 361.
What are Caesars Entertainment’s live dealer studios?

 362.
First introduced in January 2025, Caesars launched live dealer tables where they use human dealers working at real tables inside their studio and stream this to devices in real time.

 363.
This allows people who aren’t there in person to get involved, as they can place bets, chat with the dealer, and see the cards being physically dealt. Unlike computer-generated casino games, Caesars’ approach is real.

 364.
While the company isn’t the first to adopt this approach, they’ve differentiated themselves by launching branded full-scale studios that aim to replicate the ambiance of their properties.

 365.
Where are Caesars Entertainment’s current fully-branded live dealer studios?

 366.
The first branded, live dealer studio, created in partnership with Evolution Gaming, went live at the beginning of the year. It was in January when it went live for players on Caesars Palace Online Casino, Horseshoe Online Casino and Caesars Sportsbook & Casinos in Pennsylvania.

 367.
According to the brand, the experience of the live dealer is “reminiscent of the energy and grandeur of the Caesars Palace Las Vegas gaming floor.”

 368.
The Philadelphia-based studio includes five blackjack tables, as well as a VIP-exclusive blackjack table, one roulette table, and one baccarat table. Each one has a custom felt with imagery and branding from Caesars Palace and Caesars online casino brands.

 369.
In April, a branded studio went live in New Jersey inside Tropicana Atlantic City, with this featuring the same amount of tables as the previous. Then, in July, the third live dealer studio launched and is available to players in Michigan.

 370.
Why has the brand started to adopt live dealer tables?

 371.
“We’re always striving to marry the world-class experiences our players enjoy at our destinations with the online casino play they love,” said Matt Sunderland, senior vice president and chief iGaming officers at Caesars Digital, in a press release.

 372.
The introduction is described as having ‘heightened the user experience’ by ‘providing a Las Vegas Strip-style experience directly in the palm of our players’ hands.’

 373.
While the actual reasoning behind the modern move hasn’t been properly shared, it does come at a time when the iGaming market has seen a huge boom. The industry is expected to grow at an 11.5% CAGR by 2027.

 374.
Could this be the way forward for casinos looking to expand?

 375.
While some may roll their eyes at the inclusion of another technology-focused offering, the launch of these studios could appeal to those of a younger generation, or iGaming enthusiasts, who are looking for an interactive experience online.

 376.
Livestreaming has become a key feature on many social media platforms too, like TikTok and Instagram, with it having grown in interest over the last few years. In Q2 of 2024, it was reported that 8.5 billion hours of live stream content was watched across various streaming platforms.

 377.
A massive 63% of marketers were also said to be planning to increase their investment in live videos in the future.

 378.
With this in mind, it appears that Caesars’ latest digital dealer push could have come at the right time for its audience. It has also come at a time when casinos worldwide have had to adapt to meet the ever-changing demands of their audiences.

 379.
At a time when Gen Z is becoming a larger portion of the buying power, entertainment has become a huge attraction for the younger audiences. With this age group being used to livestreaming online, could the live dealer casinos become more of an interest as time goes on?

 380.
When reporting the latest figures from the second quarter, Caesars Entertainment said its digital segment had experienced one of its strongest quarters ever. There has been a 24.3% increase in ‘Caesars Digital’ in Q2 compared to 2024.

 402.
The shutdown impacts the drivers too, as many take this opportunity to recharge and recover ahead of the remaining races.

 403.
The seven-time world champion Lewis Champion has posted about being on ‘DND,’ with a social media post of him outside enjoying nature. Other drivers have taken a similar approach, including Williams’ driver Carlos Sainz, who has shared images of himself cycling in his spare time and enjoying the shutdown with family.

 404.
George Russell appears to have enjoyed time away at sea in Italy, with Charles Leclerc, Alex Albon, and Max Verstappen also posting yacht-related images on social media.

 405.
What has happened in the first half of the F1 ‘25 season?

 406.
So far, the F1 season has been dominated by McLaren as the British team has won 11 Grand Prix out of the 14 events. It was only in Canada that both papaya drivers failed to make the podium.

 407.
Lando Norris secured the win five times out of the 14 races, with his worst performance being a DNF and P4. Oscar Piastri, the other McLaren driver, has won six times in the first half of the season. His worst position was P9, which was in his home country of Australia, at the beginning of the season.

 408.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who is a four-time World Champion in the sport and previously won in 2024, has won twice this season. The Mercedes driver, George Russell, has one win under his belt in the 2025 races so far.

 409.
How many races are in the second half of the season?

 410.
This is where the Formula 1 season really starts to heat up, as fans have seen how cars are performing and some drivers have started to pull away in the drivers championship points.

 411.
The races to come are also some of the most gruelling, with high temperatures and humidity in places like Singapore being a tough aspect for drivers to contend with.

 412.
The second half begins at Circuit Zandvoort in the Netherlands on August 31, with there being just 10 races remaining. The upcoming events are as follows:

 413.

 414.
Dutch Grand Prix, Zandvoort: August 31 2025

 415.
Italian Grand Prix, Monza: September 7, 2025

 416.
Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Baku: September 21, 2025

 417.
Singapore Grand Prix, Street Circuit: October 5, 2025

 418.
United States Grand Prix, Texas: October 19, 2025

 419.
Mexican Grand Prix, Mexico City: October 26, 2025

 420.
Brazilian Grand Prix, São Paulo: November 9, 2025

 421.
Las Vegas Grand Prix, Street Circuit: November 23, 2025

 422.
Qatar Grand Prix, Lusail/Qatar: November 30, 2025

 423.
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Yas Marina: December 7, 2025

 424.

 425.
What are the odds for the second half of the F1 season?

 426.
The second half of the F1 season in 2025 will prove to be the most important as a number of drivers are competing for the championship.

 427.
Currently, Oddschecker has Australian-born Oscar Piastri as 8/13 to win the Drivers’ Championship, with British driver Lando Norris at 7/5. Max Verstappen is 100/1, with George Russell at 250/1.

 428.
These four drivers are at the top of the drivers’ standings at the moment, with Piastri having 284 points, followed by Norris with 275, Verstappen with 187, and Russell with 172. Although there’s no knowing what will happen over the next several races, as the leaderboard could completely change.

 429.
As for the first race of the season, in the Netherlands, the sports betting website has Oscar Piastri at 6/4 to be the Dutch Grand Prix winner. Lando Norris is 8/5, Max Verstappen is 9/1, and Charles Leclerc is 12/1.

 447.
This blending of technology into real-world uses and hobbies can be seen with the rise of AI, which has become commonplace in many people’s day-to-day lives.

 448.
ChatGPT, for example, was reported to be on track to reach 700 million weekly active users at the beginning of August. This marks a 4x year-over-year increase in usage.

 449.
Although the emergence of artificial intelligence appeared to have happened overnight, it was a slow transition for some companies. With this in mind, could physical casinos be taken over by the metaverse if this form of technology also sees a rise in users in the future?

 450.
What is the metaverse?

 451.
The metaverse refers to the immersive digital spaces which are like virtual worlds. People can enter these areas through the use of technologies like virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR.)

 452.
Currently, the most common use cases of the metaverse are for entertainment purposes, with people using VR or AR equipment (like the Meta Quest, Oculus, smart glasses, etc) to play games and join an online world.

 453.
Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite are all examples of popular games that can be played in the metaverse. It’s not just this category that has seen the introduction of this technology, though, as it can also be used in education, particularly when simulations for hands-on training are useful, like in medicine, engineering, or aviation.

 454.
While the industry has seen some interest in the last few years, it’s still at the start and hasn’t yet garnered the attention that AI has. As we look to the future though, this could all change if the concept becomes more understood.

 455.
Are there casinos in the metaverse currently?

 456.
While not yet mainstream, there are a number of decentralized casinos now in operation. They work in a similar fashion to a physical casino, except you’re walking up to a table or game and placing bets in the virtual world.

 457.
Typically, the virtual casinos offer a similar set-up to what you’d see in the physical world, with slots, table games, poker, and even live dealer games.

 458.
Pros and cons of metaverse casinos

 459.
With it being a case of opening a computer, putting on a headset, or wearing a pair of glasses, the metaverse could have a wide variety of players from several countries involved as no travel is needed. Some may also have a lower barrier to entry.

 460.
Although accessibility is easier, the virtual casinos may lack the physical atmosphere and experience of being in a physical location. There could be technical issues too, as you’ll need a stable internet connection and access to make these work.

 461.
Could the metaverse replace physical casinos?

 462.
The idea of metaverse casinos overtaking physical casinos is one which seems too far-fetched at the moment, but the types of businesses that operate in the digital environment could become more commonplace.

 463.
Especially as the younger generation, Gen Z, become the more prominent buyers, an attraction towards all things virtual could potentially be witnessed. Those who are aged 27 years old and younger have grown up in the ever-evolving digital age, with the use of technology being second nature to them.

 464.
According to a Deloitte report, 29% of Gen Zs and Millennials would be interested in using a VR headset to travel and explore virtually. This world has already been explored by some of them, as around 40% say they have used VR technology in some way, from gaming to attending a concert or sporting event, or for work or school.

 465.
A huge 75% of Gen Zs and Millennials class themselves as gamers too, with many playing rich, story-driven games or multiplayer combat games that offer more interactive and immersive experiences.

 466.
The love for digital platforms, and state-of-the-art video games, could be the reason why the esports industry is seeing a boom. Gen Z are five times more likely to follow esports than boomers, showing that this generation is comfortable mixing the physical with the virtual.

 467.
As technology continues to improve, and the younger generation contributes more heavily to spending/buying power, physical casinos may need to tweak their offerings to keep up – especially if the metaverse is to become popular.

 485.
This comes at a time when the market, especially sports betting, is flourishing in the United States. After the Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018, states across the country have passed laws to legalize sports betting, with many US-based operators thriving.

 486.
In 2025, the sports betting market is projected to reach $18.51 billion, with revenue between 2025 and 2029 expected to show an annual growth rate of 7.89%.

 487.
Although these numbers sound enticing, a number of European companies have recently bowed out.

 488.
Which European betting operators have left the US?

 489.
It was back in July 2024 when the parent company of sports betting and gaming businesses, Super Group, announced it would be exiting the United States sportsbook market due to a lack of a path for profitability.

 490.
The company owns Betway, a leading online sports betting and gaming business, as well as the multi-brand online casino Spin.

 491.
The German brand Tipico announced an agreement to sell its U.S. sportsbook and online casino platform in June 2024, with the LeoVegas Group, part of MGM Resorts International, buying it.

 492.
The Evoke brand, formerly 888 Holdings Limited, first shared its strategic review of US B2C operations in March 2024 before later announcing the sale of its US B2C assets in the same month.

 493.
Betfred Sportsbook is another which announced plans to formally shut down its sports betting operations in Pennsylvania, with this being reported on in July of this year. The brand began its foray into the United States in 2020 and signed a partnership at Wind Creek Bethlehem casino.

 494.
Earlier in the year, in January, Betfred departed from Nevada following other exits in late 2024.

 495.
Why are some operators choosing to change their focus?

 496.
Although not every operator who has exited has been transparent about the reasons behind it, some shared initial details when issuing updates.

 497.
Lack of a path for profitability

 498.
When first announcing their intentions to leave the United States, Super Group said the decision to close its sportsbook operations in the nine states in which it operated came after the “completion of an extensive internal review.”

 499.
The CEO, Neal Menashe, commented that the review led them to not be able to “see a long-term path to profitability for the sportsbook product.”

 500.
While the company opted out from the sportsbook perspective, it continued its iGaming presence in the country.

 501.
A year later, in July 2025, Super Group said it was making the decision to exit iGaming in the US. “Nonetheless, recent regulatory developments combined with ongoing assessment of capital allocation requirements have led us to believe that our stringent hurdle for return on capital will likely not be met in this market any time soon,” the CEO said.

 502.
‘Intense competition,’ says operator

 503.
When Evoke shared that it was undertaking a strategic review of its US B2C operations, it explained some insight into how the company was faring. Later, it announced a sale of its US B2C assets to Hard Rock Digital.

 504.
“The gross profit margin in the US is lower than the group level, reflecting significant direct costs of operating in the market including duties, market access fees, and licence fees, in addition to intense competition from well-capitalised incumbent participants,” the news release stated.

 505.
“The Group has determined that its current structure will not optimise returns, and has initiated a strategic review of the operations.”

 506.
The company’s 888 brand was active in four states, with SI Sportsbook and SI Casino in Michigan, SI Sportsbook in Colorado and Virginia and 888casino in New Jersey.

 507.
The ‘intense competition’ is very much apparent, with some big players dominating the market. At the beginning of the year, Reuters described the wide world of sports betting as ‘narrowing’ as it stated that DraftKings and FanDuel have about 80% of the U.S. market.

 508.
Those with market dominance typically have the finances for major marketing, product development, and scaling efforts, which can leave others on the back foot.

 509.
Not all are leaving, as rumors are circulating about big brand

 510.
Although there have been a number of European betting operators leaving the US in recent times, not everyone has the same view.

 511.
In early May, rumors began circulating that the Coates family, who own bet365, could be considering a partial or even full sale of the business. This could be worth as much as £9 billion ($12 billion.) The Guardian reported that talks were held with Wall Street banks and US advisors.

 512.
The company has had moderate success in the US, with some wondering if the company will eventually leave the UK for the US market.

 530.
These people will soon represent a large share of global spending power, as many are starting to enter the workforce and work their way up the career ladder.

 531.
In the past, casinos have appealed to gamblers for their perceived glamor and prestige (Baby Boomers) or to witness the ‘Vegas experience’ in full force (Generation X and Millenials).

 532.
Unlike the generations before them, though, Gen Z could be the toughest yet due to their changing values, habits and preferences.

 533.
Gen Z has been raised on digital play – it’s what they’re used to

 534.
It’s a tough group for casino operators to impress, as they can no longer rely on exclusivity. Gen Z has the world at their fingertips and can gamble online through the smartphone in their back pocket.

 535.
They’re the most technology-literate group and have become accustomed to completing many tasks and hobbies on their phones. With this comes the need to capture their attention and draw them away from the land of all things smartphone.

 536.
According to Golden Steps ABA, the attention span of a Gen Z individual is around eight seconds. This has been reducing as the generations go on, with the average time for a Millennial being 12 seconds and 20 seconds for a Baby Boomer.

 537.
Although this sounds like a major obstacle to overcome, it doesn’t mean that those aged between 13 and 28 years old have a weak focus. It just means that they’re highly selective with what captures their attention.

 538.
The changing preferences and habits of Generation Z

 539.
Like with every generation, new trends, the economy, and societal differences all influence how people spend their time and money.

 540.
Entertainment is a major interest amongst this age group

 541.
Unfortunately for brands, technology offers endless alternatives for Gen Z as they can flick through TikTok, watch their favorite YouTuber, or hang out with like-minded people in a Discord all in just a few clicks.

 542.
With this in mind, casinos are leaning into a shift towards heightened entertainment. Vegas brands are having major pool parties, bringing in celebrity DJs, and throwing exclusive events.

 543.
Jonathan Jossel, CEO of the Plaza hotel-casino in downtown Las Vegas, spoke to Las Vegas Review Journal and said non-gaming amenities are “really important” to operators in 2025.

 544.
“It’s really events that differentiate us from other places,” Jossel said, listing some non-gaming offerings at the property, such as pickleball, rodeo and free fireworks. “These events make a big difference in making us more relevant online, and that (attention) is from the younger demographic.”

 545.
Cliff Atkinson, the president of Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, also told the publisher that millennials and Gen-Z visitors are seeking ‘well-rounded experiences.’

 546.
“While gaming remains a key attraction, these generations are also drawn to the city’s diverse wellness and culinary offerings,” he said. “For millennials and Gen Z, we’ve seen that their perfect vacation blends the excitement of gaming with relaxing poolside moments, top-notch entertainment and delectable cuisine.”

 547.
They’re a financially cautious group

 548.
The younger generation has grown up in a time of rising cost of living, high student loans, and housing unaffordability.

 549.
With this in mind, it’s no surprise that many are keen to launch their own ‘side hustles’ and build wealth from a young age.

 550.
A new survey from the World Economic Forum shows that 30% of Gen Z began investing in university or early adulthood, compared to 15% of Millennials, 9% of Gen Z, and 6% of Baby Boomers.

 551.
Many are feeling the constraints of the modern economy, with financial education and money management being sought after by the group. 22% want their bank to offer a financial advice hotline, and 38% want access to online financial courses.

 552.
Gen Z live online, with a world of options at their fingertips

 553.
There’s no denying that this generation was raised in the digital age, with a world of personalization and possibilities more accessible than ever.

 554.
They’ve also grown up playing state-of-the-art video games, with visuals on any digital platform needing to be top-notch to match what they’re used to.

 555.
This could be why esports is popular in this age range, with Gen Z being over five times more likely to follow esports than boomers. They are highly invested too, with the industry having become more popular over the last few years.

 556.
Over the last couple of years, some casinos in the US have begun slowly introducing esports-themed games, with this market being an interesting one to follow.

 557.
New technology has been included into many major casino brands too like contactless gaming and smart tables, with tech-enhanced machines.

 575.
For some they have signed partnerships with sportsbook operators, while others are facing a ban on gambling advertisements around campus.

 576.
As the industry has grown rapidly over the last few years, many students have been lured in and are partaking in gambling. This has led to some college towns being stuck in the middle.

 577.
Does gambling impact college towns and students?

 578.
College students, who are typically on the younger side, could be seen as a high-risk demographic, as the prefrontal cortex in the brain (the area responsible for impulse control) doesn’t develop properly until the mid-20s.

 579.
This is why some teenagers struggle with emotional regulation, risk assessment, and long-term planning, as the prefrontal cortex hasn’t yet matured fully.

 580.
While not college-specific, the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) released a review of sports wagering and gambling addiction and described the amount of students gambling as being a ‘big concern.’

 581.
“This is a big concern given the risk-taking behavior that takes place in adolescence and young adulthood, along with gambling being more socially acceptable and glamorized than previously.”

 582.
The NCPG also states that “youth gamblers have higher rates of gambling problems than adults.”

 583.
Fox 32 Chicago says that students often see sports betting as a way to make quick cash, with some covering rent from small bets. If more students are opting to spend their money on gambling, does this mean there’s less to spend on nearby leisure activities or local businesses?

 584.
While this may be the case in some areas, many states use some of the tax from the sector and inject it back into the local economy or in infrastructure or education-related projects.

 585.
Although some areas may see a boost in jobs in the sector or in footfall, the negative impacts of gambling could cause pressure for those with addiction.

 586.
Is student gambling addiction on the rise?

 587.
According to College Gambling, around 75% of college students gambled during the past year (whether legally or illegally) with about 18% gambling weekly or more frequently.

 588.
“Lotteries, card games, pools (including raffles charitable small stakes gambling), sports betting and games of skill (e.g., bowling, basketball, pool, golf, backgammon, darts) are the most frequently chosen gambling activities by college students,” the organization stated.

 589.
But despite the prevalence of gambling by college students, only 22% of U.S. colleges and universities have formal policies on gambling.

 590.
Is legislation changing to accommodate for rise in gambling in college towns?

 591.
As the fascination with online gambling and sports betting continues to increase, with the market exploding, some areas are starting to introduce greater restrictions to protect younger people.

 592.
For example, the Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) has recently announced a ban on advertisements on college campuses, along with an expansion of the existing restrictions on advertising, marketing and promotions for casino, video gaming, and sports wagering operators.

 593.
The regulatory board has brought in the new rules, with gambling-related advertisements now not able to be placed in locations where they are likely to be seen by underage or vulnerable people.

 594.
“By adopting these measures, the IGB is building upon existing regulations to implement additional safeguards and standards that further protect the public and encourage responsible gambling habits,” said Illinois Gaming Board Administrator Marcus D. Fruchter.

 595.
Other changes include ‘prohibition from having advertisements or promotions published, aired, broadcast, displayed, or distributed on any college or university campus, or college or university media outlets such as college or university newspapers and radio or television broadcasts, or any sports venues used primarily for college and university events.’

 596.
In a report from the Associated Press, Stony Brook University in New York reportedly advises students that they may not gamble for money or other valuables on university property or in university facilities except as part of an authorized fundraising activity.

 597.
Aside from the above though, colleges in the United States have been slow to integrate any form of policies around gambling by college students. Over the last few years, some college campuses have even struck deals with sports betting companies.

 620.
However, the Sauber team has already had to navigate avoiding gambling sponsorships at previous Grands Prix, including last year’s Dutch race. In such cases, Sauber tends to race simply as Team Kick Sauber, with no mention of the gambling company.

 621.
Sauber is not alone in having gambling sponsorships, of course. Red Bull Racing also has a partnership with PokerStars, with branding appearing on cars, driver suits and helmets, while McLaren has a similar promotion with Allwyn, the operator of the National Lottery. Williams began working with online sports betting and gaming business Betway and casino brand Jackpot City, with logos for both appearing on the cars.

 622.
These teams will need to adjust their sponsorships ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, held between August 29 and 31, 2025. Interest in Formula 1 from gambling companies as a whole has gone up, so more teams could take on other gambling sponsorships in future years, making this an obstacle for more of the grid.

 640.
The three games, V-Play NHL, NBA Re-Play, and Re-Play eSports, will be available to play on desktop and mobile via bet365. Inspired promises players the latest in gaming developments, including cutting-edge motion capture, modern animation techniques, and more.

 641.
V-Play NHL is an officially licensed product with the NHL, meaning it features real teams and logos for extra authenticity. The same can be said for NBA Re-Play, officially licensed by both the NBA and the NBPA and using archive footage for an extra dose of reality.

 642.
In a slight departure from traditional sports, Re-Play eSports offers fast, always-on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) virtual gameplay, based on official tournament archive footage. Kalshi rolled out shiny new NFL contracts even as lawyers kept filing lawsuits faster than you can say “parlay.”

 673.
This time it was a second tribal challenge, aimed at keeping Kalshi off tribal lands. But the real twist came from the NCAA, which finally peeked its head above the parapet and muttered something about integrity and prediction markets after Robinhood launched pro and college football prediction markets through its app.

 674.

 675.
NCAA statement in response to Robinhood offering college football prediction markets:

 676.
"Sport integrity is paramount for the NCAA, and we are deeply concerned by unregulated and unprotected markets that pose a threat to competition integrity and student-athlete safety. We will…

 677.
— Pat Forde (@ByPatForde) August 21, 2025

 678.

 679.
Tim Buckley, the NCAA’s senior vice president of external affairs, gave us the usual formal statement: “Sport integrity is paramount for the NCAA, and we are deeply concerned by unregulated and unprotected markets that pose a threat to competition integrity and student-athlete safety.” He also promised that the NCAA would continue working with industry leaders to “ensure guardrails and regulations.”

 680.
That all sounds nice, until you notice a few missing ingredients. First, Kalshi is actually regulated. You may not like how it’s regulated, and you may think the CFTC is playing the role of the world’s sleepiest chaperone, but technically, it’s regulation. Polymarket, for the record, still can’t legally serve US users, so the NCAA doesn’t need to lose sleep over that part just yet.

 681.
Kalshi even has an integrity partner, IC360, though that’s a voluntary handshake, not a regulatory requirement. So when the NCAA says it wants to “work with industry leaders to help ensure guardrails,” what does that mean? Because spoiler alert – no regulations are arriving. Even if the CFTC woke up tomorrow with a sudden passion for sports contracts, we’d be years away from an actual rulebook.

 682.
So, the NCAA is left with the option of cozying up directly to Kalshi and friends. That’s not exactly a safe bet. And meanwhile, markets are moving forward anyway. What’s to stop Kalshi from offering props on college athletes? Not much. The CFTC isn’t going to gallop in on a white horse to protect March Madness. And Kalshi’s existing oversight doesn’t scream “line in the sand.”

 683.
And Polymarket isn’t about to sit this one out forever. Crypto.com even dabbled in prediction-style betting too. The NCAA’s adversaries are multiplying like heads on a hydra, and all the NCAA has brought to the fight so far is a stern press release.

 684.
To make matters worse, prediction markets aren’t the only problem knocking at the door. There’s the small matter of AI-powered “general predictive intelligence,” which sounds like the plot device from a techno-thriller but could end up turbocharging markets in ways the NCAA hasn’t even begun to imagine.

 685.
In short, the NCAA can keep wringing its hands about integrity. But unless it speeds things up, it risks becoming the organization that was “deeply concerned” while everyone else started betting on whether the quarterback would oversleep his 8 am class.

 686.
What’s on this week’s prediction markets

 687.
Kalshi

 688.
Kalshi just cannot escape Fed drama these days and the latest obsession is Jerome Powell’s speech at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium in Wyoming, where the world’s central bankers gather to talk shop between August 21 and 23. Powell, still the Fed chair for now, has the unenviable task of explaining where the US economy is heading while President Donald Trump continues his unusual hobby of publicly undermining central bank independence.

 689.
Markets are desperate for Powell to drop hints. For five straight meetings the Fed has held rates steady, ignoring Trump’s cries for immediate cuts. Policymakers want more clarity on what the president’s tariffs, deportation pushes, and general unpredictability are actually doing to the economy. At Jackson Hole, Powell is expected to sketch the outlook, his last speech at the annual central banker jamboree before his term runs out in May.

 690.
<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-498040 size-full" src="https://readwrite.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot-2025-08-22-133504.png" alt="A Kalshi market chart asking what Jerome Powell will say during his Jackson Hole speech. 691.
Naturally, Kalshi users are already trading on the precise words Powell will use. More than $235,000 has been staked on terms ranging from the obvious “Symposium” to the nerdy “Balance of risks.” A striking 57% of traders are betting Powell will talk about layoffs.

 692.
Meanwhile, vultures have been circling over Powell’s successor. Christopher Waller, Michelle Bowman, and Trump’s ally Kevin Hassett are all considered contenders for Powell’s chair if the musical chairs at the Fed begin in earnest.

 693.
On a side note, prediction markets are suddenly bustling with action over the next Democratic presidential nominee. California governor Gavin Newsom, despite being under fire for allegedly blocking a casino after pocketing $2 million in tribal donations, has seen his odds skyrocket. He now sits at 28%, comfortably ahead of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at 13%, with nearly $17 million wagered overall. Pete Buttigieg, for the moment, is jogging along in single digits at 9%.

 694.

 697.

 698.
Newsom, it seems, has cracked open the Trump playbook. In recent days he’s posted himself atop Mount Rushmore, been prayed over by Tucker Carlson, Kid Rock, and a winged Hulk Hogan, and taken to writing in ALL CAPS on social media. “He’s trying to mimic President Trump,” Steve Bannon told POLITICO, and the markets, at least, are starting to think it’s working.

 699.
And if that weren’t enough, prediction markets are colliding with artificial intelligence. Enter Prophet Arena, a project out of the University of Chicago’s SIGMA Lab, which tests AI models not on past data but on live unresolved events, many pulled straight from Kalshi and Polymarket. “By anchoring evaluations in unresolved, real-world events, Prophet Arena ensures a level playing field,” the researchers wrote.

 700.

 701.
Introducing Prophet Arena — the AI benchmark for general predictive intelligence.

 704.
– It can’t be hacked. Most benchmarks saturate over time, but here models face live, unseen… pic.twitter.com/rhwR5WlU9d

 706.

 707.
So far, machines seem to be holding their own. GPT-5 tops the leaderboard with an 82.21% Brier score, while OpenAI’s o3-mini leads in raw profits when its calls are converted into simulated wagers. Kalshi itself has been dabbling in AI, recently linking up with Elon Musk’s Grok, while Polymarket has begun spitting out AI-generated summaries of its markets.

 708.
If the machines keep improving, they could strip away all the sentiment and second-guessing that plague human traders. No gut feelings, no mood swings, just cold forecasting. In that case, the old “wisdom of the crowd” might soon have to share the stage with the wisdom of the algorithm.

 710.
If Kalshi is keeping things buttoned-up, Polymarket is happily leaning into the spectacle of Powell’s Jackson Hole appearance. True to its social, buzzy reputation, traders have pushed the limits of what counts as a market. Roughly 83% believe Powell will mention the pandemic, 63% are betting on unemployment, and the most popular wager of all is whether he’ll bother to say “Good morning.”

 711.
<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-498041 size-full" src="https://readwrite.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot-2025-08-22-134643.png" alt="A Polymarket prediction market titled “What will Powell say during his speech at Jackson Hole on August 22?” with $128,011 in volume. 712.
Behind the cheekier bets lies the real question whether Powell’s speech will signal the Fed’s latest policy. Investors are mostly expecting a quarter-point cut in September, but as Deutsche Bank analysts warned earlier this week, the address could end up “creating uncertainty” rather than clearing the air.

 730.
Drake recently hit out at Kick CEO and Stake co-founder Ed Craven in the comments of a livestream on the platform, calling him a ‘goof’ and claiming that he’d been ‘dissing’ fans of the rapper. He also asserted that Kick was blocking Drake from ‘pushing affiliate’ to his fans and audience.

 731.
“We built this s***, and they treat us like s*** still. I was never allowed to push affiliate,” he wrote.

 732.
By ‘affiliate’, we can only infer that this relates to earning money through directing people to the gambling platform Stake, where Drake would presumably receive a cut from sign-ups and bets placed.

 733.
The future of Drake and Kick

 734.
Now, his personal Kick account has now disappeared. What’s more, fellow streamer Adin Ross, who has streamed with Drake in the past, said on a livestream that Drake would not be doing any more streams.

 735.
“Bro, I’m not doing any more streams,” said Drake, according to Ross, as told in a recent livestream on Kick. “Unless it’s for Brand Risk [Ross’ company] or some s*** like that, I’m doing any more of those streams. I’m good.”

 736.
Ross seemed to find the news disappointing and frustrating, sighing and running his hands through his hair on the stream.

 737.
“Now I’m over hear panicking,” he added. Later, Ross would be told in the stream comments that Drake had deleted his Kick account.

 738.
After investigating for himself and finding it to be true, Ross seemed dejected on the stream, saying: “GG, bro. What now?”

 739.
GG here refers to gaming slang for ‘good game’, often used sarcastically to express frustration with someone else’s behaviour.

 740.
It’s unclear whether Drake has deleted his Kick channel himself, or whether it’s been deleted on Kick’s end, perhaps at the request of Craven. That’s not confirmed as yet, with Drake, Kick, and Craven all not commenting on the disappearance of the account publicly.

 741.
Readwrite has reached out to Kick for comment on the situation.
