There’s no doubting one of the main reasons coming to Cebu, is to enjoy Cebu’s beautiful beaches. A fine example of a Cebu resort has to be Alegre beach resort in Cebu’s north. Idyllic and luxurious in its setting, it’s a perfect way to enjoy your holiday in Cebu. Away from the crowds, fresh ocean air, a relaxing spa with Cebuano hospitality at its best, makes Alegre one of our best choices in the top beach resorts of Cebu. Large spacious rooms, huge bathrooms, great views, beautiful beach and a great pool make for a perfect romantic getaway. One we highly recommend. The title Cebu White Sands is a bit misleading, as the beach here isn’t as great as it sounds. Like with many beaches in Mactan Island, this beach is a bit disappointing! None the less this resort has a couple of great pools to enjoy swimming in. While not as big, brash or expensive as a lot of resorts in Mactan Island this one gives you a more laid back feel. The rooms are large and clean and the staff are very attentive and friendly. We really like the smaller feel to the place (not some 300 room 20 hectare resort where you need a taxi to get from one side to the other!), while still enjoying a relaxing ambience that you come to expect from a Cebu resort. Mangodlong Paradise Beach Resort takes the place of Santiago Bay Resort as our favourite resort in the Camotes. The resort is the closest thing you will get to luxury on the island with brand new rooms complete with all modern amenities you need. Mangodlong has its own great beach area as well as the great infinity pool (the only one on the Camotes). The resort has an open air restaurant serving up some great food. Friendly staff and lovely landscaped gardens makes this resort in Camotes one you really need to stay at. For the complete guide to resorts in the Camotes, please visit our Camotes page. I love anything hip and funky and this resort in Cebu (Mactan Island) fills our needs perfectly. As soon as you walk into this resort you can see that the interior decorator went to town with its vibrant colour schemes and trendy furniture. The rooms match the feel and style of the hotel, with their chic elegance. The beach again (as is the norm in Mactan) is pretty average, but the stylish looking (if rather a bit small) swimming pool makes up for the disappointing beach. Be Resort is popular with the Asian market and this Cebu resort ranks up there as one of my favourites. Looking for a resort in Cebu that gives you a piece of paradise? Sumilon Blue Water Resort in Cebu may give you that and more! A few hours south of Cebu City and a 10 minute boat ride will have you on this island. Beautiful, peaceful and secluded is what’s in store for the tourist. The rooms are spacious and simply furnished and have a veranda overlooking the ocean. The island offers the guest some beautiful beaches and great swimming opportunities. Relax, have a massage while looking at the ocean and just unwind! Ever wanted to camp under the stars? A new initiative is they offer luxury camping which we find tempting to say the least. Living in luxury is not cheap and you’re restricted to the resort’s only restaurant (again which isn’t cheap) so if you don’t mind the prices this is an excellent resort in Cebu. Mövenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu Of all of Cebu’s luxury beach resorts one definitely worth mentioning is the Movenpick Beach Resort on Mactan Island. Originally built by the Hilton Hotel Chain it was bought over by the Swiss company and re-branded as the Movenpick Hotel Mactan or better known as the Movenpick Cebu. They closed the resort for around 6 months and gave it a huge renovation to the beach area. This was a huge plus to the resort and gave it a much needed fresh and modern look. They opened their new beach front restaurant and bar the Ibiza Beach Club. At the end of the day, it’s a wonderful place chill and watch the sunset with a nice cold beer or cocktail. The staff are second to none and help make your vacation to Cebu only the more better. If you have the money it’s well worth checking out this resort in Cebu. This Cebu resort must go down as the best eye candy views in all of Mactan. We’re not talking about the girls either, this is strictly scenic views! The resort is made up of a number of man-made lagoons that are surrounded by luxury Villas. Pamper yourself at the spa, enjoy the water sports or dine in one of the resorts 4 restaurants, the choices are endless. Rooms are large and clean as what you would expect from a luxury resort. Plantation Bay is suitable for the whole family with activities to suit young and old. The beach itself is nothing too great and the place is expensive, a common thing you will find staying at any of the upper market resorts in Mactan! And when the summer sun shines brightly, it seems to beckon to us to pack our colorful bags, huge umbrellas, along with our suntan lotions and head straight to the white sandy beaches. Are you a beach buff? Then prepare your beach clothes, beach bags and accessories, sarong and hats included and oh don't forget your suntan lotions to protect you from heat. You are in for a summer treat as we go on a tour to the top ten beach resorts in the Philippines. What are you waiting for? Let's go! Boracay Boracay is a tropical island famous for its white sand beaches and can rival the popular beaches in the Caribbean and the South Pacific area. The White Beach is what most people love about Boracay. It is a lovely stretch of powdery white sand against azure water. This very long beach is divided into three stations with station 1 having the widest beach front area and where prime hotels and resorts are found. The most suitable months for swimming on the White Beach is during the dry season -from November to April. But on the other side of the island where there are large winds and waves, wind surfing and wave running are activities that you can engage in. The rainy seasons which falls on the months from June to October, the reverse thing happens. White Beach now has large waves and makes it unsuitable for swimming. Panglao Island, Bohol City Philippines Bohol is the tenth largest island of the Philippines and is located in the middle of the Visayas region. Because it is surrounded by other islands on all sides, it doesn't experience as much heavy typhoons and rains unlike the other parts of the region. The beaches are located in Panglao Island. One of the most developed beach on Panglao is the Alona Beach. It is located southwest of the island and stretches about one and a half kilometers long. There are a lot of nice, affordable resorts equipped with diving, snorkeling and dining establishments. A friendly warning: sea urchins inhabit the sea in large numbers around twenty or thirty meters away so be careful when wading. Palawan Pangulasian Island From El Nido, Palawan El Nido, Palawan A lot of travelers are fascinated with El Nido due to its scenic landscapes, crystal clear waters and the relative isolation that offers a person quiet relaxation. There are 45 islands and islets with the surrounding sea that provides a lot of adventure and enjoying the pleasures that nature brings. You can engage in kayaking in lagoons, go on a mangrove tour, snorkeling or diving with tropical fishes, fishing, bird watching, picnic lunches of sunbathing in a white sand beach, among others. Camiguin, Cagayan City This tiny island with lush forests and seven volcanoes, eternal hot and cold natural springs, white beaches and majestic waterfalls would suit the traveler who is looking for an idyllic vacation. The Camiguin province has been identified by the Department of Tourism as one of the top 25 tourist destinations in the Philippines, and No. 7 diving spot in the world. Mactan Island, Cebu Mactan Island is located just a few kilometers from Cebu. From Cebu you need to cross either of the two bridges - Mactan Bridge or Marcelo Fernan Bridge to reach Mactan. This island has all the major beach resorts offering diving, snokling, jet skiing, para sailing, island hopping and where the historical Lapu-Lapu Shrine can be found. Datu Lapu-Lapu, one of the chieftains at that time, was engaged in a tribal warfare with Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. The lovely beaches with a water temperature between 27-30 C is ideal for diving or swimming all year round. You can also visit Malapascua Island, famous for its white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters or Moalboal, one of the first places where scuba diving caught on. Puerto Galera, Sabang Beach, White Beach Dubbed as the Pearl of Mindoro, Puerto Galera has one of the world's most natural harbors. It is world-famous for splendid beaches, coral reefs and dive sites. (Visit Sabang Beach or White Beach.) The scuba diving season is year round. From its start of "backyard tourism" where local residents accepted guests in their homes, the island has now flourished with resorts, hotels and inns within the area. Pearl Farm, Samal Island Davao City If you travel to the southern part of the Philippines, the Samal group of Islands (nine islands in all) is a beautiful, tranquil, exotic island with a coastline adorned with white sand beaches, colorful marine life, flourishing flora and fauna. The Pearl Farm is nestled on the quiet side of Samal Isalnd, a 45 min. boat ride from the wharf, and is a world-class resort. The named Pearl Farm came to be because this area was once an 11 hectare pearl farm with thousands of white-lipped oysters. Dakak, Dipolog City The famous Dakak beach is famous for its strikingly shaped bay and powdery white sand. It is dubbed as the diving Mecca in Mindanao, Philippines. The perfect blue waters and diving sites attracts tourists local and foreigners alike. It is nestled on the tip of northern Zamboanga and faces the Sulu Sea in the west and on the east side, it is surrounded by mountains. Pagudpud Island, Ilocos Norte Ilocos Norte's Pagudpud Island is not comparable to the more sophisticated resorts found in Boracay. Meanwhile, the volume of domestic travelers in 2012 was 40.7 million, and this is expected to increase to 44.1 million in 2013. The top sources of international travelers to the Philippines were Korea, USA, Japan, and China. Strategic markets include Taiwan, Australia, Singapore, and Canada, while opportunity markets include Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Malaysia, and Germany. Tourism Undersecretary for Tourism Development Daniel G. Corpuz outlined three key strategies in moving forward to attain the goal of increased volume in tourists, including: developing and marketing competitive tourist products and destinations; improving market access, connectivity, and destination infrastructure; and improving institutional governance and human resources. “Tourism is a major instrument to contribute to national development, and the National Tourism Development Plan must be synchronized with the Philippine Development Plan, ” explained Undersecretary Corpuz. “Government agencies are required to submit a portion of their budgets that will have an impact on tourism development.” Tourism Assistant Secretary Roland Cañizal further expounded on greater integration of government agencies to allocate adequate resources that would boost tourism development in the Philippines, citing several Convergence Programs that the DOT has with other departments, especially the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the provision of access roads to tourist destinations and the Department of Communications (DOTC) in upgrading key airports throughout the Philippines. He further emphasized the role of local government units in boosting tourism destinations in their respective jurisdictions. “This is the kind of thinking that we want to cascade to all the local government units—that if they are serious about being a part of the National Tourism Development Plan, their seriousness is translated in terms of their commitment to develop their areas and to put the necessary resources to make sure that the plan is being implemented, ” Cañizal said. In terms of developing and marketing a diverse range of tourism products and services, Undersecretary Corpuz emphasized that the Philippines must think “beyond beach vacations”. Among the products identified by the DOT are: nature tourism; cultural tourism; sun and beach tourism; leisure and entertainment tourism; MICE and events tourism; health, wellness, and retirement tourism; cruise and nautical tourism; diving and marine sports tourism; and education tourism. In a videotaped message, Tourism Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. stated that the tourism industry is all about changing mindsets in the Philippines, especially since it did not rank high in terms of priorities for the longest time. “The National Tourism Development Plan provides a framework for an honest and professional tourism sector as an engine for sustainable growth, ” he emphasized. “We need to buttress a closer and stronger cooperation among tourism players in this flattering period of the Philippines’ growth, ” Dr. DeKrey stated. “There is no room for complacency, and we already have what it takes to make it happen—skills, talent, enterprise, and government support. The AIM Center for Tourism aims to create greater opportunities for the Philippines through tourism, education, and economic development. Tacio/Rappler The Department of Tourism promotes this municipality as one of the prime eco-tourism destinations in Mindanao. It is named after the biggest (354 hectares) of the 3 lakes of the town. (The other two lakes are named Seloton, 48 hectares, and Lahit, 24 hectares.) Lake Sebu is often called the “Summer Capital of Southern Philippines” as its climate is pleasantly cool (due to an elevation of 1, 000 meters high from sea level). By night, the temperature gets even cooler and feels great for those who seek the feel of the fresh mountain air. The bestselling Lonely Planet described Lake Sebu as a place located in a “bowl of forests and mountains.” The 42, 450-hectare landscape is recognized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a cultural landscape in Mindanao. Maragusan, Compostela Valley “Maragusan is a cold place just like Baguio and Tagaytay.” “There are so many beautiful and exotic spots to visit. There are too many I can’t say them all.” These are just some of the remarks you often hear from people who had been to Maragusan, a first class municipality in the province of Compostela Valley. The best place to stay is at the Haven’s Peak Highland Resort, which has been featured in The Lonely Planet. It is nestled on Tarago Hills facing the town with 208 beautifully landscaped steps leading to its tidy but beautiful lobby. This mountain resort provides sight of the picture-perfect and picturesque view of green foggy mountains appearing like a painting and like backdrop of a stage. Kopiat Island in Mabini, Compostela Valley This 87-hectare island is off the coast of Pindasan. Sea travel around the island takes about 20 minutes by motorized boat, while in-land tour takes about 45 minutes. A portion of the island encircles a seven-hectare lagoon. (READ: From Davao City, make the trip to these 8 beautiful beaches) Actually, Kopiat Island is part of the protected area known as Mabini Protected Landscape and Seascape. It was declared as such during the time of President Joseph Estrada and for good reason. It is a known breeding ground of marine turtles, a “protected and regulated” species. As such, it is a good place for snorkeling and diving. The whole island is fully planted with coconut trees. There are also some wild fruit trees inside the heart of the island. Since it is still undeveloped, there are no stores where you can buy soft drinks or food. But that’s what makes the island a perfect place for adventure. Not far from Kopiat Island is the appropriately named Lunod Island: more than half of its 17 hectares is occupied by submerged mangrove forest teeming with beautiful sea creatures. Its rich coral gardens are spawning grounds for fish, crustaceans, and other marine life. Dahican Beach in Mati City, Davao Oriental This is located some 15 minutes from the heart of the city. A recent American visitor, who had also been to Boracay, praised the beach in these words: “I have not seen such a wonderful beach, not even in Boracay. The Dahican Beach is South Sea dream come true.” (READ: Head to 'Borawan' and these 5 unspoiled PH beaches) Swimming is not the only thing you can do while you are in Dahican Beach. If you like water adventure like skimboarding, this is the best place in Davao region. In fact, several skimboarding competitions have been held in the place; it is being touted as the Skimboarding Capital of Mindanao. George Plaza, whose story I featured in Reader’s Digest, is the man behind the popularity of skimboarding in Dahican. He founded the Amihan Boys to help those out-of-school youths to do something worthwhile instead of being a problem in the barangay where they are living. These boys can be tapped as trainers for those who want to learn skimboarding. Britania Islands in San Agustin, Surigao del Sur Most of the islands are uninhabited with minimal or no vegetation. But all have one thing in common: they are surrounded with crystal clear waters. One visitor wrote in Trip Advisor: “In my opinion, the Britania Group of Islands is the next best thing to Boracay in the Philippines in terms of pristine white beaches some people at a time can enjoy. The gremlin-like animal is called a tarsier and was a favourite of mine for years, even as a photo on my mousepad when I was working as a lawyer (to my colleagues' confusion). Endangered, the tarsier exists on only a few islands now - in the Philippines, in Indonesia and elsewhere in the region. One of the smaller primates on earth, they are shy, nocturnal and, in my eyes at least, beyond adorable. So I headed to the Philippines to see them at a sanctuary in Bohol, an island in the south of the country. The thing about the Philippines, however, is that it is a wonderful country, and one with incredible diversity from north to south. I might have arrived there for a small furry primate, but I stayed for many other reasons. After a full four months in the country, readers often write about where to visit for their own Philippine trips. Some suggestions: Bohol Home of the tarsiers. How could you not? Palawan Explore the underground caves of Sabang near Puerto Princessa, head to the Bacuit Bay's El Nido and snorkel through some incredible karst rock formations and revel in the beauty that nature has to offer. Rice terraces of Batad While Banaue is more well-known as far as rice terraces go, taking a multi-day hike through Batad, Cambulo and other small villages, looping up and down the terraces to get from one to the other, was a serious highlight of my time in the Philippines. Sagada The tiny mountain town of Sagada had some fabulous restaurants and a fun coffee culture, and was an excellent stop-over during an exploration of the country's north. Island hopping in the Visayas South of Manila, there are great island groups to see, with many ferries that ply the routes from one to the other. From the Visayas (Bohol is within them, but I had to note it separately given my love of tarsiers), Leyte, Negros and more, including the party in Boracay, a hugely popular resort beach for locals and tourists alike. I spent 4 months there but I didn't get to see all of what I wanted and as with any country, there is always more than meets the eye.
