Relocating later in life brings a unique set of considerations. Whether it’s downsizing from a longtime family home, moving closer to loved ones, or transitioning into a retirement or assisted living community, seniors need more than just boxes and a moving truck—they need compassionate, personalized support. At Exodus Moving & Storage, we understand that every move is personal and unique, especially when it comes to our older adult clients. That’s why we’ve created this comprehensive guide to help seniors and their families plan a successful, stress-free move.

Why Senior Moves Are Different

Moving is considered one of life’s most stressful events. For seniors, it often includes emotional challenges like leaving a long-time home, letting go of cherished items, or adapting to health and mobility needs. These transitions may also involve working around retirement income or coordinating with caregivers and family members.

Because of these complexities, seniors benefit from working with senior movers who are trained not just in logistics, but in empathy, patience, and communication. Exodus Moving & Storage is proud to be recognized as Silver Certified 55+ Moving Experts, meaning our team is specially trained to meet the needs of older adults with compassion and care.

Step 1: Start with a Personalized Plan

The first step in a successful senior move is creating a plan tailored to your needs. We recommend starting the planning process at least 6-8 weeks before your moving day. This gives you time to:

Evaluate your new space and determine what items will fit

Work with family to decide what to keep, donate, sell, or put into storage for the time being

Schedule packing and transportation services

Coordinate with senior living staff or community managers if applicable

If you’re working with Exodus, we begin with a free consultation to assess your needs, create a customized move plan, and answer all your questions.

Step 2: Decluttering and Downsizing

One of the biggest challenges seniors face is deciding what to bring to their next home. Downsizing can feel overwhelming, but it also offers a chance to simplify and refresh your living space.

Our team offers guidance and packing help for seniors, including:

Coordinated timelines for sorting items room by room

Suggestions for local donation centers and estate services

Secure packing of sentimental and fragile belongings

We believe every item has a story, and we take care in honoring those stories throughout the process. If you’re unsure about what to bring—or whether everything will fit—we also offer short- and long-term storage solutions to keep your belongings safe until you’re ready.

Step 3: Packing with Care and Clarity

Exodus provides full and partial packing services, and our senior move specialists are trained to handle fragile items, heirlooms, and specialty belongings. We:

Use clear labeling systems for easy unpacking

Offer custom crating for delicate or high-value items

Provide full inventory tracking to ensure nothing is lost or misplaced

Our goal is to keep you comfortable and informed every step of the way.

Step 4: Moving Day Support

On moving day, our crew arrives on time, prepared, and ready to make things as smooth as possible. All of our movers are Silver Certified, and many of our movers have been with us for 5+ years. Our movers understand how to work around mobility aids, provide regular updates, and maintain a calm, courteous demeanor.

We always:

Ensure accessibility and safety during loading and unloading

Communicate clearly and frequently

Coordinate directly with family members or senior communities as needed

Here’s what one customer said about our senior move team:

“We hired Exodus to move us. They communicated clearly from the quote to begin with, to confirming details on exactly what they were moving the week of.

The day of our move, they showed up on time and ready to work. They moved our whole house, drove 20 minutes to the new house, and had us unpacked by 4 pm.

I appreciate their attention to detail, as we had mud at the new house, and they designated different dollies for the mud and clean ones for items going in the house. Thank you so much, Exodus, for having great employees!”

We believe in doing more than delivering boxes—we deliver peace of mind, all in one piece.

Step 5: Settling In and Ongoing Support

The first few days in a new place can be disorienting. We go the extra mile to help you settle in, including:

Unpacking assistance and basic furniture setup

Reconnecting electronics or TVs

Answering any follow-up questions or concerns

We also offer climate-controlled storage options if you’re not ready to bring everything with you or need a little extra time.

Why Choose Exodus?

With over 28 years of experience and a strong reputation throughout Colorado, Exodus Moving & Storage stands apart for our values, service, and local expertise. We are:

Locally Owned. Locally Involved. We support nonprofits throughout Colorado.

Moving across state lines is a big deal, and it can be overwhelming without a solid plan in place. Whether you’re relocating for work, family, retirement, or a fresh start, understanding the logistics of an interstate move can help you avoid costly mistakes, delays, and unnecessary stress. In this guide, we’ll walk you through what to expect, how to prepare, and how Exodus Moving & Storage makes the process stress free from start to finish.

Why Interstate Moves Are Different

An interstate move does not simply mean a longer drive. It involves additional regulations, paperwork, timing, and coordination. Unlike local moves, interstate relocations often require:

Special licenses and insurance coverage

Detailed moving estimates and contracts

Federal regulations and compliance (via the FMCSA)

Timing coordination across multiple cities or states

That’s why it’s crucial to work with a licensed and insured interstate moving company that understands national moving logistics, like Exodus Moving & Storage.

Choose a Reputable Interstate Moving Company

The first step in a successful long-distance move is choosing the right partner. Be cautious of lowball estimates or unverified brokers who can leave you stranded on move day.

Follow these steps to choose your moving partner wisely:

Verify licensing with the U.S. DOT number

Check reviews on Google, BBB, and local sources

Request a written, in-home or virtual estimate

Ask if they provide binding or non-binding quotes

Ensure they do not outsource your move to a third party

Here’s what one customer said about working with our team for an out-of-state move:

“We had a fantastic experience with Exodus Moving in Colorado for an out-of-state move. From start to finish, their communication and professionalism stood out. Christian came to the house to complete a thorough walk-through and provided a detailed estimate. Tori, our move coordinator, was incredibly helpful in walking us through the process and answering all of our questions.

On move day, Frank led the moving team and did a wonderful job keeping everything organized and on track. The crew — Mike Jr, Izzy, John and Luis — worked so hard to ensure the entire process was smooth and seamless. They were careful, efficient, and clearly cared about doing the job right.

The truck is currently en route, and we will update this review once our items arrive at the destination, but so far, we couldn’t be happier with how everything has gone. Highly recommend Exodus!”

Understand Interstate Moving Costs

Interstate moving costs are based on several factors:

Distance between locations

Weight or volume of belongings

Packing and special services (crating, disassembly)

Storage needs

Timing and availability (peak season = higher rates)

Always request a clear estimate with a breakdown of costs. A reputable interstate mover like Exodus will provide transparent pricing so there are no surprises.

To better understand quotes and contracts, check out Moving Estimates: Deciphering the Mystery.

Plan Ahead and Stay Organized

The earlier you start planning, the smoother your interstate move will be. We recommend beginning the process 6-8 weeks in advance.

Here are some important tasks to tackle:

Create a move binder or digital folder for quotes and checklists

Research your new community: schools, utilities, licenses

Change your address with USPS, banks, and insurance providers

Schedule service shutoffs and transfers (internet, electricity, etc.)

Secure childcare or pet care on moving day

Reserve elevators and parking if you’re in a high-rise building

Label which cords go to which electronic devices—TV cords, computer cords, and chargers can all look the same once they’re packed

Bonus Tip: Keep all essential documents, medications, valuables, and chargers with you during the move—not in the moving truck.

Pack Smart or Let the Pros Handle It

Packing is a time-consuming part of any move, and even more critical during long-distance relocations. Proper packing protects your items over hundreds or thousands of miles.

You can:

Pack yourself using sturdy, labeled boxes

Use a room-by-room strategy with color-coded tape

Photograph electronics or complex setups before disconnecting

Or, simplify the process with professional packing services. At Exodus, we offer partial and full-service packing, including:

Fragile-only packing

Custom packing for art and antiques

Full inventory tracking

Know What to Expect on Move Day

On the day of your interstate move, a professional crew should:

Arrive on time and walk through the plan with you

Protect doorways, flooring, and stair rails

Load items securely and systematically

Provide an inventory sheet and bill of lading for your signature

If possible, you should always be present or reachable by phone.

Make Settling In Easier

Once you arrive at your new home, your mover should:

Reassemble any disassembled furniture

Place boxes in the correct rooms

Review the inventory list for accuracy

After the move, remember to:

Register your vehicle and update your driver’s license

Meet your neighbors—here’s a helpful New Neighbor Etiquette guide

Set up your new utilities and explore your community

Why Choose Exodus for Your Interstate Move?

Exodus is a Wheaton World Wide Moving agent, fully licensed and insured, and has been trusted for long-distance moves for over 28 years across Colorado and beyond. We offer:

Options for climate-controlled storage

Interviewer: Welcome to the team, Oscar! Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to join us here at Exodus Moving & Storage?
Oscar Perez: I am originally from California, attending Catholic schools from 1-12 grades, I am the third child of four siblings, having two older sisters and a younger brother. I completed 10yrs of service in the US Air Force and am currently a Locomotive Engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad for the last 27 years and look forward to retirement in the next few years. I joined Exodus as an extension to my spouse Norma who is a manager for sales and marketing.

Interviewer: As a Veteran, your experiences are incredibly valuable. Could you tell us about your service history and any experiences that shaped your career path?
Oscar Perez: I enlisted into the US Air Force at 17 on Aug 28, 1984, attended Basic Training and the Security Police Academy at Lackland AFB as well as Air Base Ground Defense at Camp Bullis Texas. I have been stationed at numerous bases in the states as well as overseas. I was promoted from an E-1 Airman Basic to an E-5 Staff Sargent by the time I separated from Active duty in Aug 1994. My duties were providing Security /Law Enforcement duties to include Nuclear Weapon Convoys, securing Military Installations and Personnel, Supervise/Instruct Subordinates in weapons safety, tactics and protocol, writing enlisted performance reports, evaluating security procedures and providing feedback. I have been awarded the following: AF Good Conduct Medal, AF Commendation Medal, Southwest Asia Campaign Medal, Liberation of Kuwait Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal as well as numerous ribbons.

Interviewer: Transitioning from military to civilian life brings its unique challenges and opportunities. How has your transition been, and what lessons from your service do you find most applicable in your daily work?
Oscar Perez: The transition to civilian life was not an easy process in the beginning, I found job opportunities scarce for what I had been trained for and not having a four-year degree, my career goal was to be in Law Enforcement, however because of the Rodney King incident, there was a hiring freeze in the state of California at the local, state and federal levels. A friend provided a path to a job with the Union Pacific Railroad was my best opportunity to sustain and support my family. I have been with the UPRR for 29 and a half years and look forward to retirement in the next two and half years. The qualities I bring to Exodus are the ability to speak to large crowds, to instruct and evaluate, eye for detail, see things through to completion.

Interviewer: You’ve taken on the role of Veteran Liaison. What inspired you to pursue this position, and why was it important to you to serve veterans in our community?
Oscar Perez: I had accompanied my wife Norma to many networking events and social after hour gatherings and made many friends/connections of my own and saw a need to reach out to fellow veterans as Exodus does to older adults and show that the company cares about their well-being and giving them support by getting involved in community activities and programs such as Healing Warriors and Health4Heros which are local organizations. As a Verteran, I have firsthand experienced the neglect and double standardization that our society has given our Vets thru the years, and I firmly believe that Exodus is committed to change that, and I would like to be the face that the vets see and can trust for Exodus.

Interviewer: What are your primary goals in your new role here? Are there specific programs or initiatives you are eager to introduce or expand?
Oscar Perez: My primary goal is to inform and educate the Veteran community that Exodus is a proven name you can trust and depend upon. By showing true commitment through community involvement, support and follow through to meet their moving needs. Such as Healing Warriors and Health4Heros, which are both local organizations.

Interviewer: In what ways do you believe your military background will help you succeed in this role and make a difference in the lives of the veterans we serve?
Oscar Perez: I have no difficulty in speaking to large crowds, making new friends, promoting Exodus by committing myself to community activities and supporting Veterans and their programs. I am able to relate and speak with veterans on a mutual level of respect and understanding.

Interviewer: Looking ahead, what are some of the challenges you anticipate facing in this role, and how do you plan to address them?
Oscar Perez: The challenges I face are informing and supporting the Veterans by volunteering my time in supporting the Veterans groups and programs in the local region and eventually to the state level. I am never afraid to ask for support and guidance from my co-workers in accomplishing our goals

Interviewer: Lastly, what message would you like to share with the veteran community about the services and support they can expect from Exodus Moving & Storage?
Oscar Perez: Exodus has been a locally owned and operating company for nearly 30 years with strong ties to the community. Exodus is Silver certified in moving our older adults as being the only moving company to receive the Torch Award for ethics from the Better Business Bureau. You can be confident with the entire staff from Operations, Sales and Marketing, moving estimators, move coordinators as well as our moving team.

Interviewer: Welcome, Norma! We’re thrilled to have you here. Let’s dive right in. What’s your name and your role at Exodus Moving & Storage?
Norma Perez: Hi there! I’m Norma Perez, and I’m the Marketing & Sales Manager and Move Consultant at Exodus Moving & Storage.

Interviewer: Fantastic! Can you share a bit about your professional background and what brought you to Exodus Moving & Storage?
Norma Perez: Absolutely. My career spans over two decades, and I’ve worn many hats! I started as a Case Manager for the Department of Human Services, where I spent over 15 years supporting individuals and families. I then worked as a Victim’s Advocate for the Greeley Police Department and as a Parent Educator for C.A.R.E. (Child Advocacy Resource & Education). I also directed a diaper ministry through my church. My journey led me to Exodus Moving & Storage in 2022 as a Project Manager. I transitioned to Marketing & Sales in July 2023, and it’s been an incredible journey ever since!

Interviewer: Wow, that’s impressive! Where are you from originally, and what brought you to Colorado?
Norma Perez: I’m a proud native of Northern Colorado and currently live in Johnstown with my husband, Oscar.
Interviewer: Family time is the best! Can you tell us a bit more about your family and how you engage with the local community?
Norma Perez: As an Air Force veteran, my husband and I are passionate about participating in community events that honor veterans.
Interviewer: That’s wonderful! What’s your favorite part about working at Exodus Moving & Storage?
Norma Perez: The relationships I’ve built are by far the most rewarding aspect. The connections I’ve made go beyond professional boundaries and have become like family to me. It adds a deeply fulfilling dimension to my work.

Interviewer: That’s heartwarming to hear. Can you share a memorable project or experience you’ve had while working here?
Norma Perez: One of my favorite memories is volunteering at the Slammin Famine event with my professional sisters. We assembled nutritious meals for malnourished children around the world. It was heartwarming and empowering, and we had a blast wearing hairnets, looking like school lunch ladies from our youth!

Interviewer: What a fantastic experience! Do you have a personal philosophy or motto that you live by?
Norma Perez: Yes, my motto is: “Never judge anyone by their worst day…because we all have them!”

Understanding the key differences between these two entities is essential to having a smooth relocation without fear of surprise costs, confusion, or mistakes. This article details the difference between moving carriers and moving brokers and helps you spot the difference between the two.

Moving Carrier: Your Typical Moving Company

A moving carrier is what you would typically envision as a “moving company,” which operates with its own fleet of trucks, a team of movers, and dedicated move coordinators. They are responsible for handling every aspect of your move. This can include packing, loading, transportation, and unloading, as well as any other additional services that you request. These services will be handled directly by someone on their team. With a moving carrier, you will communicate directly and only with the company that will handle your belongings.

Moving Broker: The Middleman in the Mix

While moving carriers handle moving your belongings, a moving broker acts only as an intermediary between you and the moving carrier without providing you with a truck or crew. Their primary role is to gather your moving information and then connect you with one or more moving companies that can fulfill your requirements. Since moving brokers don’t charge you for moving your items, they instead make your money by either charging you a fee for serving as the intermediary, selling your information to multiple moving companies, or both.

Why Should You Avoid Moving Brokers?

Issues related to moving brokers have become a nationwide concern, affecting individuals moving across the country. Because of this, the U.S. Senate has even conducted an extensive investigation into consumer protection problems associated with moving brokers on the Internet. Some recurring issues highlighted in the investigation include:

Price Hikes: Moving brokers often provide low initial estimates to attract customers, only to raise the price significantly once the move is handed over to a real moving company. According to the Senate report, 25% of customer complaints were related to unexpected price increases upon the arrival of the moving carrier.

Hostage Situations: Customers have reported instances where moving brokers hold their belongings “hostage” after a price hike is disclosed, forcing them to either pay the inflated price, often amounting to thousands of dollars more, or risk having their items withheld.

Customer Confusion: Despite regulations requiring moving brokers to disclose that they are not the actual movers, this disclosure often goes overlooked. This can lead to confusion and frustration when a different company arrives on moving day.

“Deposit” Fees: Moving brokers may require customers to pay a “deposit,” which essentially functions as a brokerage fee. These fees can range from over $100 to over $1000 and do not contribute to the actual cost of your move.

Moving brokers tend to prioritize their financial gains over customer satisfaction and may employ tactics that compromise the integrity of your move. For a stress-free move that costs a fair price, avoid moving brokers.

How to Spot the Difference Between Brokers and Movers

To protect yourself from the potential pitfalls of moving brokers disguising themselves as carriers, it’s essential to know how to differentiate them as a company to avoid. Here are the top five things to look for when making this distinction:

Search Their License Number: Legitimate moving carriers will have their license number prominently displayed on their website. Verify this information and check for a USDOT or MC number, which should confirm their status as a moving carrier. For in-state moves, make sure they have a Colorado state license number. Brokers, on the other hand, should register as moving brokers with the FMCSA, though many do not comply with this requirement. If you use the USDOT lookup from FMCSA, you will be able to see how many trucks and crew they have, showing whether they are legitimate.

Look for an Address: A reputable moving company will provide a physical address on its website. You can verify just how real the address is by using Apple Maps, Google Maps, or any other online map service to ensure it leads to an actual moving company’s location, and not a residential location.

Avoid Big Deposits: Be cautious of any moving company that asks for a substantial deposit in advance of your move. Typically, a legitimate moving carrier will not require any deposits, and if they do, it’s typically a small “good faith” deposit, which would be just a couple of hundred dollars at most.

Read Online Reviews: Reading online reviews is an excellent way to gauge a company’s reputation. Look for genuine, thoughtful reviews rather than generic one- or two-word comments. Beware of overly positive reviews that appear suspicious, as some companies may pay for fake reviews. Some signs of this are that they are generic or all come in on the same day.

Go with an Interstate Agent of a Van Line: Choosing a moving company affiliated with a nationally trusted van line, such as Wheaton World Wide Moving, can provide an extra layer of security. While not all movers are part of a van line, this affiliation can offer peace of mind. Most moving brokers will not risk lying about being part of one of these national van lines.

Final Thoughts

Moving is an infrequent, life-altering event for most individuals, making it difficult to know what to look for in a trustworthy moving carrier. With the prevalence of moving brokers, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and informed during your search for movers. Remember that good movers are not cheap, and cheap movers may not provide the quality of service you need. Choosing a moving company because they are cheap can lead to unexpected costs as the moving broker hands you off to the real moving carrier. By following these guidelines and doing your due diligence, you can ensure a smoother, more reliable relocation experience.

If you’re preparing to move to, from, or within Colorado, you need to be prepared to pack your items correctly. This can be the difference between your belongings being damaged and your items making it to your new home without a scratch.

It doesn’t take much for your items to be damaged, which is a scary thing. The plus side is that this is easily avoidable. All you have to do is commit time to research what the correct way to pack each of your items is. Correctly packing your items means you won’t face any issues and you can rest assured that when you unpack your belongings they will be in the same condition that you packed them in.

As experts in the moving industry, with more than 25 years of experience under our belts, we understand the “ins and outs” of packing. We put that knowledge into this blog with all of the packing tips that you need to keep your belongings safe during your Colorado Move.

Everything You Need to Know About Moving Boxes

Moving boxes seem like very simple things. While they may appear that way, the truth is that they are a key part of the move and selecting the right one takes research. Taking your time to make sure you have the right boxes can prevent damage to your items.

Here is a list of some of the more common moving box options out there:

Sizes of Standard Moving Boxes

Small Boxes, 16” x 12” x 12”

Medium Boxes, 18” x 16” x 18”

Large Boxes, 18” x 18” 24”

Extra Large Boxes, 24” x 20” x 24”

Types of Specialty Moving Boxes

Dish Pack

Made-to-Order Crates and Moving Boxes

Mirror Carton

TV Boxes

Wardrobe Carton

A very common misconception that you want to avoid is that larger boxes can hold more weight. This isn’t true. When a box gets big, its surface area has less structure. Stick to packing large but light items in these moving boxes.

Tips on Packing China for Moving

It is understandably stressful to pack glassware and china, given how fragile and valuable they are. However, that stress will go away as long as you pack them correctly. Your china will stay secure if you use the packing tips from the experts.

Glassware fits perfectly in dish packs. The trick is to put large, flat dishes on the bottom of these specialty boxes. Of course, put cushioning on both sides of these larger items and make sure that they are individually wrapped. This will create a base that you can work on top of.

On top of these, pack the rest of your dishware. Here is how to pack each type of glassware:

Plates should be wrapped in bundles of four, while each plate is wrapped individually. Be sure to also wrap them as a whole bundle.

Bowls are packed the same way but in groups of two to three instead of four.

Wrap drinkware such as mugs and glasses individually.

Wine glasses are unique due to their delicate stem. Wrap this area with folded paper. After this, wrap up the entire glass.

There are certain pieces of china that are very delicate. For these, we suggest wrapping them in clean paper, individually, and pad them generously with paper. You can wrap this all up in newspaper and place it in either a dish pack with other china or in its own separate box. This depends on the shape and size of the piece of the china.

Tips on Packing a Painting

Paintings can come in many different forms. Due to this, there are many different ways to pack paintings properly.

For example, paintings may be framed or not framed. On top of that, does your framed painting have a glass panel? The medium can have an effect too, such as if it is an oil painting or not.

For almost all paintings, a mirror carton will be your best bet. When deciding on the size, your aim should be for a box that is roughly 3-4 inches bigger on each side of the painting. This will allow you to have enough room for proper padding.

For framed paintings, that you want to save the frame of, your aim is to protect the corners. We recommend cardboard corner protectors. Make sure that you put these protectors on after you wrap your painting. Not before.

When packing framed pieces with glass covers, you will want to make sure that you secure the glass. While the glass will protect the painting, you don’t want the glass to go everywhere in the case of potential damage. For protection, make an “X” shape using packing tape right across the entire glass cover.

For any painting that doesn’t have a glass cover, wrap up the entire painting completely before packing in order to prevent friction prints.

If your oil painting doesn’t have a glass cover, keep in mind that oil and paper do not mix. While newspaper is a common material in packing for wrapping and padding, make sure that you don’t let your oil painting get exposed to this paper.

For all other paintings, we recommend putting wadded newspaper in your mirror carton before you put in your painting. Be sure to pad the entire thing in bubble wrap.

Tips on Packing Clothes for a Move

Whether you or your spouse have a big wardrobe, this is always an intimidating group of items to pack due to the size of how many clothes you own.

To make the process simple, follow these tips on packing clothes for a move:

Put clothes aside for moving week so you don’t have to undo your hard work.

Sell, donate, and throw away any clothes you don’t wear.

Wardrobe boxes are the perfect option for simple and secure clothing packing.

If possible, leave your clothes in the dresser and wrap them up to use as moving boxes.

As tempting as it is to just get a big cardboard box and throw as many clothes in as possible, keep the weight in mind.

Don’t hesitate as you approach this area of your home during packing. It gets easier the more you chip away at it so be sure not to save it for last.

What to Look For When Hiring Professional Packers

What you may have noticed is that the packing process is incredibly difficult. There is a ton that goes into it. Due to this, and depending on how your schedule and budget look, it may be best to hire professional packers.

When you start looking for professional packers, be sure to consider whether or not you can trust them. To see if that’s the case, look for certification, years of experience, and any awards they may have won. This will give you a good sense of who they are as a company.

Good luck with your packing and moving process! Remember that, as difficult as it may seem, an exciting new home is waiting for you on the other end.
