<content:encoded><![CDATA[President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will immediately stop its bombing campaign against Yemen’s Houthi rebels. In exchange, the Houthis have agreed to cease their attacks on ships in the Red Sea. During a meeting in the Oval Office with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump stated, “They said, at least to us, that they don’t want to fight anymore.” He emphasized that the U.S. would honor this commitment and halt the bombings.
However, the announcement raised several questions. Trump did not clarify whether the Houthis’ promise referred specifically to American ships or all vessels in the region. His comments suggested a focus on American interests, as he did not mention any commitment from the Houthis regarding attacks on Israel. This lack of mention surprised Israeli leaders, who appeared unprepared for the U.S. shift.
The situation has become more intriguing with the involvement of Oman. The Omani Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, revealed that Oman played a key role in mediating between the Houthis and the U.S. Oman has also facilitated U.S. talks with Iran, the Houthis’ primary supporter. Reports indicate that Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, was instrumental in negotiating the deal through Oman.
The U.S. military campaign against the Houthis had intensified since March, aiming to deter their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. This campaign led to significant civilian casualties, including a strike on a migrant center that reportedly killed 68 people. Despite the U.S. efforts, the Houthis continued their attacks on ships and escalated hostilities against U.S. warships.
Trump’s decision to halt the bombings could be seen as a pragmatic move. It acknowledges the reality that the military campaign was not yielding the desired results and was instead leading to increased civilian suffering and political fallout for his administration. 
This decision may also pave the way for renewed negotiations with Iran. Although the Houthis cannot be labeled as direct proxies of Iran, they do receive substantial support from Tehran. By stopping the bombings, Trump may be signaling a willingness to engage Iran in broader discussions, potentially linking Houthi de-escalation to a larger agreement concerning Iran’s nuclear program and regional actions.
Importantly, the deal with the Houthis does not appear to extend to Israel. The Houthis have maintained their attacks on Israeli targets, and Trump’s announcement did not include any assurances for Israeli security. This suggests a deliberate choice to prioritize U.S. security interests over broader regional conflicts.
While this approach aligns with Trump’s campaign promises to avoid entanglement in foreign wars, risks remain. The Houthis’ commitment to cease attacks is yet to be tested, and without a mechanism to ensure compliance, the situation could deteriorate. Additionally, ongoing violence in Gaza and the Houthis’ resolve to support Palestinians complicate the landscape.
In summary, Trump’s decision to halt bombings in Yemen represents a significant shift in U.S. policy. It reflects a focus on American interests and a desire to reduce unnecessary violence. By stepping back from military action, Trump has opened the door for potential diplomatic engagement with Iran while keeping Israel’s conflicts at a distance.

This holiday break marks another deadline for him to bring a major budget reconciliation bill to the House floor, but significant disagreements within the GOP are complicating matters.
Back in January, Johnson optimistically suggested that Congress could wrap up its budget work by late April. By February, that timeline slipped to early May. Now, with less than two weeks to go, the pressure is mounting, especially as seven out of eleven House committees have already passed their parts of the mega-bill.
Internal conflicts among Republicans have mostly revolved around broad ideas, but that is starting to change as specific proposals are put forward. A notable incident occurred in the House Transportation Committee when Chairman Sam Graves had to withdraw a plan for a universal $20 fee on gas-powered vehicles. This plan aimed to eventually eliminate the federal gasoline tax, but it faced backlash from fellow Republicans who found it unacceptable.
In place of the gas fee, the committee proposed increasing the electric vehicle fee to $250. However, this is just one of many contentious issues that lie ahead. The Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means Committees are set to hold crucial meetings next week, where they will tackle significant budget cuts and tax adjustments. The Energy and Commerce Committee has been tasked with finding $880 billion in cuts over the next decade, while Ways and Means has a $4.5 trillion budget for tax cuts.
Moderates within the GOP are pushing for limited reforms to Medicaid, which has led to some inconsistency in Johnson’s messaging. He has been hesitant about what reforms to pursue, such as changes to the federal reimbursement rate for Medicaid services. Recently, he indicated that two major reforms, FMAP changes and per-capita caps, might be off the table, which did not sit well with more conservative members of the party.
Moderates are proposing a three-part plan for Medicaid reform, which includes stricter work requirements for able-bodied adults, more frequent eligibility checks, and cutting benefits for undocumented immigrants. However, even if these proposals are accepted, they may not provide enough savings to meet the ambitious $880 billion target.
Conservatives are pushing back against the moderates’ demands, especially regarding the SALT deduction, which they believe could worsen the deficit. A group of thirty-two House Republicans recently sent a letter to Johnson and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, emphasizing that the reconciliation bill must not add to the deficit and must prioritize fiscal discipline.
As the clock ticks down to the Memorial Day deadline, the pressure is on. Some members, like Rep. Buddy Carter, have expressed doubts about meeting Johnson’s timeline. With so much at stake, the coming weeks in Congress will be critical as lawmakers work to finalize their budget plans.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[The UK has welcomed its first moon rocks in over 50 years, marking a significant moment in space exploration. These samples, collected by China’s Chang’e 5 mission in 2020, are now in the hands of scientists in Milton Keynes. 
Professor Mahesh Anand from The Open University is among seven international scientists chosen to study these precious samples. He expressed his excitement, saying, "It really humbles me to think that I am one of the seven billion plus people on this planet who has a chance to work with these precious samples." 
The moon rocks, which arrived on May 9, 2025, are the first to be brought back since the Soviet Luna mission in 1976. Professor Anand traveled to Beijing to collect the samples, ensuring he kept them close during his journey back to the UK. He carried them in his hand luggage, stating, "I couldn’t risk losing them." He highlighted the importance of the samples, noting they are stored in triple-sealed containers to protect them from Earth’s atmosphere.
These samples are especially important because they come from a different area of the moon compared to previous missions. Professor Anand explained that they reveal new information about the moon’s geological history. He hopes this research will shed light on the origins of the moon and the elements necessary for life on Earth, such as hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen.
The professor has dedicated his career to studying moon samples from the Apollo missions, which were collected from six landing sites. He is eager to see how the new samples differ chemically. This research is crucial for future plans to establish human presence on the moon.
As he continues his work, Professor Anand feels a strong sense of responsibility. "I want to do my best to get the best out of these samples for the scientific community and for the wider world," he said. The arrival of these moon rocks not only excites scientists but also represents a new chapter in lunar exploration.
