41.

President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will immediately stop its bombing campaign against Yemen’s Houthi rebels. In exchange, the Houthis have agreed to cease their attacks on ships in the Red Sea. During a meeting in the Oval Office with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump stated, “They said, at least to us, that they don’t want to fight anymore.” He emphasized that the U.S. would honor this commitment and halt the bombings.

 42.
However, the announcement raised several questions. Trump did not clarify whether the Houthis’ promise referred specifically to American ships or all vessels in the region. His comments suggested a focus on American interests, as he did not mention any commitment from the Houthis regarding attacks on Israel. This lack of mention surprised Israeli leaders, who appeared unprepared for the U.S. shift.

 43.
The situation has become more intriguing with the involvement of Oman. The Omani Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, revealed that Oman played a key role in mediating between the Houthis and the U.S. Oman has also facilitated U.S. talks with Iran, the Houthis’ primary supporter. Reports indicate that Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, was instrumental in negotiating the deal through Oman.

 44.
The U.S. military campaign against the Houthis had intensified since March, aiming to deter their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. This campaign led to significant civilian casualties, including a strike on a migrant center that reportedly killed 68 people. Despite the U.S. efforts, the Houthis continued their attacks on ships and escalated hostilities against U.S. warships.

 45.
Trump’s decision to halt the bombings could be seen as a pragmatic move. It acknowledges the reality that the military campaign was not yielding the desired results and was instead leading to increased civilian suffering and political fallout for his administration.

 46.
This decision may also pave the way for renewed negotiations with Iran. Although the Houthis cannot be labeled as direct proxies of Iran, they do receive substantial support from Tehran. By stopping the bombings, Trump may be signaling a willingness to engage Iran in broader discussions, potentially linking Houthi de-escalation to a larger agreement concerning Iran’s nuclear program and regional actions.

 47.
Importantly, the deal with the Houthis does not appear to extend to Israel. The Houthis have maintained their attacks on Israeli targets, and Trump’s announcement did not include any assurances for Israeli security. This suggests a deliberate choice to prioritize U.S. security interests over broader regional conflicts.

 48.
While this approach aligns with Trump’s campaign promises to avoid entanglement in foreign wars, risks remain. The Houthis’ commitment to cease attacks is yet to be tested, and without a mechanism to ensure compliance, the situation could deteriorate. Additionally, ongoing violence in Gaza and the Houthis’ resolve to support Palestinians complicate the landscape.

 49.
In summary, Trump’s decision to halt bombings in Yemen represents a significant shift in U.S. policy. It reflects a focus on American interests and a desire to reduce unnecessary violence. By stepping back from military action, Trump has opened the door for potential diplomatic engagement with Iran while keeping Israel’s conflicts at a distance.

 64.

In a series of recent interviews, former President Donald Trump shared his views on foreign policy, particularly regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine and nuclear negotiations with Iran. These discussions took place during interviews with Time, The Atlantic, and NBC’s Meet the Press, where Trump provided some of his most pointed comments yet.

 65.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Trump made several bold claims. He stated that Ukraine would never join NATO, saying, “I don’t think they’ll ever be able to join NATO.” This aligns with a recent U.S. peace plan that confirms Ukraine will not seek NATO membership. He also suggested that NATO’s discussions about Ukraine joining the alliance led to Russia’s invasion, a point that has been echoed by officials from both Ukraine and NATO.

 66.
Trump was clear about territorial issues as well. He asserted that “Crimea will stay with Russia,” and his peace plan includes recognizing Russian control over certain territories in the Donbas region. When asked what Russia would have to give up, he claimed, “Russia will have to give up all of Ukraine,” adding that he believed his involvement had prevented a larger conflict.

 67.
On the topic of negotiations, Trump indicated that he might walk away from talks if they did not yield results. He stated, “There will be a time when I will say, ‘Okay, keep going. Keep being stupid and keep fighting.’” This suggests a willingness to step back from diplomatic efforts if they seem futile.

 68.
Shifting focus to Iran, Trump expressed optimism about negotiating a nuclear deal, but his stance appeared to evolve over time. Initially, he aimed for limits on Iran’s civilian nuclear program, but by his latest interview, he demanded “total dismantlement” of Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He maintained that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” but he also indicated some openness to discussing civilian nuclear energy, though he expressed skepticism about its necessity given Iran’s oil resources.

 69.
Trump also made headlines with his remarks about U.S. territorial expansion. He stated he wouldn’t mind being remembered as a president who expanded American territory, specifically mentioning Canada and Greenland. He claimed Canada could be the 51st state, insisting that the U.S. doesn’t need anything from Canada, while suggesting that Canada needs the U.S. more. When asked about the possibility of using military force to take Canada, he downplayed the likelihood but left the door open for potential actions regarding Greenland.

 70.
These interviews highlight Trump’s controversial positions on foreign policy issues, revealing a mix of assertiveness and ambiguity. As he navigates these complex topics, his statements continue to stir debate and concern among political analysts and the public alike.

 85.

Former Supreme Court Justice David Souter has passed away at the age of 85. He died at his home in New Hampshire on Thursday. Souter was nominated to the Supreme Court by President George H. W. Bush in 1990, with expectations that he would be a strong conservative voice. However, during his nearly two decades on the bench, he often sided with the more liberal justices on key issues.

 86.
Souter was known for his unexpected decisions, particularly in cases related to affirmative action, gay rights, and the death penalty. His confirmation hearings hinted at his more progressive leanings, especially when he expressed support for the right to privacy established in previous court rulings.

 87.
Souter was a Rhodes Scholar and graduated from Harvard Law School before serving as Attorney General of New Hampshire. His legal career took a significant turn when he joined the Supreme Court, where he made notable contributions to landmark decisions. For instance, he played a crucial role in reaffirming a woman’s right to choose in the 1992 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, stating that overturning Roe v. Wade would undermine the court’s legitimacy.

 88.
Despite his Republican nomination, Souter’s legacy is often viewed as one of a liberal justice. Constitutional scholar John O. McGinnis remarked that Souter’s time on the court was marked by surprising decisions rather than a clear jurisprudential philosophy.

 89.
Souter retired in 2009, paving the way for President Barack Obama to appoint Justice Sonia Sotomayor. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in American legal history, reflecting the unpredictable nature of judicial appointments and the evolving landscape of the Supreme Court.

 104.

House Speaker Mike Johnson is facing a tough challenge as the Memorial Day recess approaches. This holiday break marks another deadline for him to bring a major budget reconciliation bill to the House floor, but significant disagreements within the GOP are complicating matters.

 105.
Back in January, Johnson optimistically suggested that Congress could wrap up its budget work by late April. By February, that timeline slipped to early May. Now, with less than two weeks to go, the pressure is mounting, especially as seven out of eleven House committees have already passed their parts of the mega-bill.

 106.
Internal conflicts among Republicans have mostly revolved around broad ideas, but that is starting to change as specific proposals are put forward. A notable incident occurred in the House Transportation Committee when Chairman Sam Graves had to withdraw a plan for a universal $20 fee on gas-powered vehicles. This plan aimed to eventually eliminate the federal gasoline tax, but it faced backlash from fellow Republicans who found it unacceptable.

 107.
In place of the gas fee, the committee proposed increasing the electric vehicle fee to $250. However, this is just one of many contentious issues that lie ahead. The Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means Committees are set to hold crucial meetings next week, where they will tackle significant budget cuts and tax adjustments. The Energy and Commerce Committee has been tasked with finding $880 billion in cuts over the next decade, while Ways and Means has a $4.5 trillion budget for tax cuts.

 108.
Moderates within the GOP are pushing for limited reforms to Medicaid, which has led to some inconsistency in Johnson’s messaging. He has been hesitant about what reforms to pursue, such as changes to the federal reimbursement rate for Medicaid services. Recently, he indicated that two major reforms, FMAP changes and per-capita caps, might be off the table, which did not sit well with more conservative members of the party.

 109.
Moderates are proposing a three-part plan for Medicaid reform, which includes stricter work requirements for able-bodied adults, more frequent eligibility checks, and cutting benefits for undocumented immigrants. However, even if these proposals are accepted, they may not provide enough savings to meet the ambitious $880 billion target.

 110.
Conservatives are pushing back against the moderates’ demands, especially regarding the SALT deduction, which they believe could worsen the deficit. A group of thirty-two House Republicans recently sent a letter to Johnson and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, emphasizing that the reconciliation bill must not add to the deficit and must prioritize fiscal discipline.

 111.
As the clock ticks down to the Memorial Day deadline, the pressure is on. Some members, like Rep. Buddy Carter, have expressed doubts about meeting Johnson’s timeline. With so much at stake, the coming weeks in Congress will be critical as lawmakers work to finalize their budget plans.

 126.

President Donald Trump has fired Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, just days after a conservative group criticized her for promoting liberal views. Hayden, who was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2016, received an email on Thursday from Deputy Director of Presidential Personnel Trent Morse informing her of her immediate termination.

 127.
The American Accountability Foundation, a conservative watchdog organization, had recently called for her dismissal. They took issue with her stance on allowing minors access to certain books, which they deemed inappropriate. In a tweet celebrating the firing, the group expressed gratitude to Trump for removing what they described as a "woke" librarian.

 128.
Hayden’s removal comes amid broader efforts by the Trump administration to replace individuals they view as part of a "deep state" with those who align more closely with an "America First" agenda. Tom Jones, president of the American Accountability Foundation, stated that it was time to clear out those who do not support this vision.

 129.
Hayden’s tenure was already controversial. She was criticized in the past for her donations to Democratic candidates, including $3,000 to Obama’s campaigns. Additionally, she faced backlash in 2022 when the Library of Congress lent a historic crystal flute once owned by President James Madison to musician Lizzo for a performance.

 130.
Democrats have condemned the firing, arguing that it reflects an ongoing attack on libraries and intellectual freedom. New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich remarked that while Trump seeks to control what Americans can read, Hayden has dedicated her career to making literature accessible to all.

 131.
Hayden’s dismissal coincided with the firing of Cameron Hamilton, the acting director of FEMA, who was let go after expressing support for the agency’s continuation, contrary to Trump’s proposals to dismantle it.

 146.

Pope Leo XIV held his first mass on Friday, May 9, 2025, shortly after being elected as the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church. The mass took place in the Sistine Chapel, the same location where he was elected just a day earlier. This historic moment marked the first time an American has taken on the role of pope.

 147.
Before becoming Pope Leo, he was known as Cardinal Robert Prevost. At 69 years old, he spent many years in Peru as a missionary, which shaped his views and mission for the Church. During the mass, he expressed his hope that his papacy would help illuminate the challenges faced by people in today’s world.

 148.
In his homily, Pope Leo spoke in English briefly before switching to fluent Italian. He addressed the cardinals, saying, "God has called me by your election to succeed the prince of the apostles." He emphasized the responsibility of the Church to share the goodness of faith, especially in areas where believers face opposition or indifference.

 149.
The election of Pope Leo XIV followed a conclave that began after the passing of Pope Francis in April. After four rounds of voting, white smoke signaled his election. Thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square to witness this momentous occasion, and Pope Leo appeared emotional as he greeted the crowd.

 150.
Dressed in white and gold vestments, he led the mass with grace. The King of the United Kingdom even sent a private message congratulating him on his new role.

 151.
Pope Leo XIV holds both American and Peruvian citizenship, reflecting his diverse background. His election is seen as a significant step for the Catholic Church, especially in a time when faith faces various challenges globally. As he begins his papacy, many are hopeful about the direction he will take the Church in addressing these issues.

 166.

NBA legend Charles Barkley recently sparked a conversation about transgender athletes in sports. During an appearance on Dan Dakich’s show, Barkley expressed strong views against allowing men to compete in women’s sports. His remarks came in response to a discussion about Nike reportedly funding a study on gender-affirming care for young boys.

 167.
Barkley stated plainly, "Men should not play sports against women." He emphasized his support for the LGBTQ+ community but firmly rejected the idea of men competing in women’s sports. He said, "If anybody thinks that, I think they’re stupid." Barkley believes this issue is straightforward and does not want to engage in debates about it.

 168.
The discussion took place after Dakich brought up a New York Times article mentioning a study led by Joanna Harper, a transgender woman and researcher. The study, which Nike is reportedly financing, aims to assess the fitness levels of trans adolescents before and after starting hormone therapy. Barkley voiced concerns about young people making decisions about their gender identity, suggesting that kids might not fully understand who they are at a young age.

 169.
He cautioned against putting children in situations that could disadvantage them in sports, stressing the importance of careful consideration in such matters. Barkley’s comments reflect a broader debate on the participation of transgender athletes in competitive sports, a topic that continues to generate significant discussion and differing opinions across the country.

 184.

The UK has welcomed its first moon rocks in over 50 years, marking a significant moment in space exploration. These samples, collected by China’s Chang’e 5 mission in 2020, are now in the hands of scientists in Milton Keynes.

 185.
Professor Mahesh Anand from The Open University is among seven international scientists chosen to study these precious samples. He expressed his excitement, saying, "It really humbles me to think that I am one of the seven billion plus people on this planet who has a chance to work with these precious samples."

 186.
The moon rocks, which arrived on May 9, 2025, are the first to be brought back since the Soviet Luna mission in 1976. Professor Anand traveled to Beijing to collect the samples, ensuring he kept them close during his journey back to the UK. He carried them in his hand luggage, stating, "I couldn’t risk losing them." He highlighted the importance of the samples, noting they are stored in triple-sealed containers to protect them from Earth’s atmosphere.

 187.
These samples are especially important because they come from a different area of the moon compared to previous missions. Professor Anand explained that they reveal new information about the moon’s geological history. He hopes this research will shed light on the origins of the moon and the elements necessary for life on Earth, such as hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen.

 188.
The professor has dedicated his career to studying moon samples from the Apollo missions, which were collected from six landing sites. He is eager to see how the new samples differ chemically. This research is crucial for future plans to establish human presence on the moon.

 189.
As he continues his work, Professor Anand feels a strong sense of responsibility. "I want to do my best to get the best out of these samples for the scientific community and for the wider world," he said. The arrival of these moon rocks not only excites scientists but also represents a new chapter in lunar exploration.

 204.

Donald Trump has proposed a significant reduction in U.S. trade tariffs on China, suggesting they could be cut to 80%. This announcement comes ahead of important peace talks between the two nations in Switzerland. The meeting, involving top officials from both countries, is seen as a chance to ease the ongoing trade war, which has had serious consequences for both economies.

 205.
The talks are particularly crucial as both nations face economic challenges. Trump shared his thoughts on his Truth Social platform, indicating that this 80% tariff could be a reasonable figure. The decision will ultimately rest with Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, who is leading the American delegation in Geneva.

 206.
Currently, tariffs on U.S. imports to China stand at an alarming 125%, while Chinese goods entering the U.S. face tariffs of 145%. These high rates have created a situation that resembles a trade embargo, making trade between the two countries extremely difficult. Even with an 80% tariff, trade would still be heavily restricted.

 207.
The anticipation surrounding the talks has had a positive impact on financial markets, with the U.S. dollar and global stock prices rising. Investors are eager for a resolution, as the ongoing trade disputes have already led to rising prices and supply chain issues. In fact, the U.S. economy saw a contraction in the first quarter of the year, largely due to trade tensions. The Federal Reserve has also refrained from cutting interest rates, citing concerns that tariffs will keep inflation high.

 208.
China, on its end, has not yet shown significant economic distress in official data, but surveys indicate that factory orders are declining. In response, the Chinese central bank has cut interest rates and eased reserve requirements to stimulate lending and support manufacturers.

 209.
As the talks approach, China has expressed that it expects the U.S. to make the first move toward concessions. The Chinese delegation is led by Vice Premier He Lifeng, known for his negotiation skills. A spokesperson for China’s commerce ministry emphasized that the decision to engage in talks was made after careful consideration of global expectations and the interests of both Chinese and U.S. businesses.

 210.
White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett remarked that the atmosphere of respect and collegiality during the discussions is promising. Both sides hope that these negotiations will lead to a cooling of trade hostilities and a more stable economic relationship moving forward.

 225.

A$AP Rocky recently showcased his affection for Rihanna in a big way. The rapper shared a video on Instagram where he flaunted a stunning new ring that features a statue of Rihanna. This eye-catching piece, created by celebrity jeweler Jason Arasheben, known as Jason of Beverly Hills, is not just any ring; it’s a custom-made gold and diamond-encrusted design that is so large it requires two bands to support the miniature statue.

 226.
In the video, Rocky proudly displayed the ring, which is made from 130 grams of 18-karat gold and is adorned with over five carats of round brilliant-cut white diamonds. He referred to Rihanna affectionately, highlighting her features and expressing his admiration. “You see this sexy thing? My shorty got the little fatty on her too,” he said, pointing out the details of the statue.

 227.
The ring is a tribute to Rihanna, designed without any names or logos, just her silhouette. Fans have responded positively, appreciating Rocky’s open display of love. Many commented on social media, calling it “iconic black love” and praising how he openly adores her.

 228.
Rocky wore the ring to the Met Gala, where he was a co-chair. However, he didn’t wear it on the red carpet. Instead, he opted for a stylish suit paired with a custom rain jacket and a unique umbrella shaped like a revolver, referencing a recent legal issue. Rihanna made her entrance later, proudly showing off her baby bump, as she is expecting the couple’s third child.

 229.
The silhouette on the ring is reminiscent of a memorable outfit Rihanna wore at the British Fashion Awards in 2019, which Rocky has previously called his favorite look of hers. This ring is not just a piece of jewelry; it’s a heartfelt symbol of their relationship, showcasing Rocky’s creativity and love for Rihanna.
