44.

The Miami Grand Prix might only have been on the Formula 1 calendar since 2022, but it has very quickly earned itself a reputation of being a race where people want to be seen.

 45.
Not everybody by any stretch, but the image of the South Florida race has had a major focus on being unashamedly Miami, and providing high-end entertainment and opportunities. A-listers flocked to it in the opening two years, and ticket prices remained high as the organizers put on a festival in Miami Gardens.

 46.
That’s not something that has been lessened heading into the third iteration of the grand prix, but the race’s president Tyler Epp says there has also been more of a leaning into the core culture of racing and automobile fandom as Miami has become more accustomed to putting on the event.

 47.
“We’re ready to go,” Epp told RACER in the paddock shaded by the Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday. “I think the team has done a really good job of jumping into year three here, and we’ve learned a lot in years one and two. We just finished up the track walk this morning, and I was spending some time with the race director, and we’re just talking about how quickly you get to year three, and how much more comfortable we all are with each other personally.

 48.
“We know each other, we know where we can go. We know when there’s an issue, there’s someone there to handle it. So I think, as in so many businesses, but I think especially in motorsports – and maybe specifically Formula 1 – relationships are so important, to make sure that we’re pulling these off at a high level.

 49.
“That then goes two ways. On the front part, it’s a bit more comfort, and so on all sides of our stakeholders, there’s more comfort that we’re going to deliver, and we’re going to deliver at the level which F1 and the FIA expect.

 50.
“On the other side of it, it does put you in a place where you get to be a little more creative, and you get a little bit more freedom to say ‘What about this? And let’s try this’. And I think you’ll see this year, we really came into the year thinking, number one, the things that we did well, let’s try to do them even better; the things that we weren’t quite as happy with, let’s make sure we adjust and fix.

 51.
“Then the third thing is, let’s try some new things, and let’s make sure that we’re not forgetting that we’re building a fan base here. We’re building a fan base in South Florida, in Miami, but also throughout the country and throughout the world.

 52.
“We want Miami to be a destination. So you’re seeing a bit more of a commitment to what we would consider car culture in South Florida, even just walking around the campus. There’s more car displays, you’re seeing more action on track.

 53.
“Obviously, we’ve got the Porsche Carrera Cup series back, we’re so excited to have Suzie Wolff and F1 Academy here with us, and then you’re also having events like a Bonhams auction on Saturday night. So there’s an increased amount – and it’s intentional – of including autos and cars in what is considered to be an auto racing event. We shouldn’t forget that.”

 54.
The Miami race joined the F1 calendar at a very different time for the sport in North America compared to when Austin became the standalone U.S. race back in 2012, making comparisons at the evolution of each a dangerous game. But from the third year onwards it became more challenging for Circuit of the Americas to maintain interest and attendance figures – a scenario faced by many races globally that needed to work hard to continue early momentum.

 56.
So far there’s been no drop-off in interest from ticket holders according to Epp, even if the organizers are trying to speak to its fanbase in a different way.

 57.
“We will be packed to the gills this weekend,” he says. “Sunday especially, will surpass last year’s attendance numbers, we feel confident with that. We’re right right on the cusp here today and that is by design.

 58.
“I would tell you this, it’s a different challenge. And as we start to storytell about the circuit and about the event and about what’s happening at the event, the thing that we’re thinking most about is making sure that those fans who have come to us now for three years, that we recognize them, we thank them.

 59.
“We asked them to help us build that core fanbase, not only in Miami, but domestically, and then work with the other promoters in North America to make sure that we’re doing the right thing for the sport as a whole and continue to invest in our fanbase.”

 60.
A local Miami television crew was at COTA earlier this year to highlight the differences between the two races and their set-ups, which are clear. But the arrival of Las Vegas appears to be much more in Miami’s wheelhouse, leading Epp to admit he was initially concerned that there could be “pressure” on the race in terms of the luxury space.

 61.
However, having not seen that trepidation lead to any tangible challenges, Epp says the way that Liberty Media and Formula One Management (FOM) have given race promoters as much freedom as possible have helped protect a unique selling point that can complement other events.

 62.
“I think Greg [Maffei, Liberty CEO] and Stefano [Domenicali, FOM CEO] get a lot of credit for allowing each promoter to really represent the market in which they they operate. And we are encouraged to do that, we’re asked to do that. And so when you go to Austin, it’s a different feel than coming to Miami, or going to Vegas, or going to Montreal, or going to Mexico City.

 63.
“Look, the product is still a very high-level, wonderful fan experience – the product itself. And that’s what everyone does so well. But I think the promoters are given that freedom to say, ‘Yes, but this is the Austin version of it, and this is the Miami version of it’.

 64.
“And that’s certainly how we feel; that we’ve always been wanting to have people come here and feel like they visited Miami, and they get the art and the culture and the food and the entertainment. It’s more than just a race.

 65.
“For those who are motorsports fanatics, it can still be a wonderful motorsports experience. But it allows us to put experiences together that engage multiple different segments of the population. And that’s what we have hung our hat on here for the last couple of years.

 66.
“But our ability to work together with other promoters, not just in America, but North America, to make sure we’re cultivating that fanbase, and giving them things to continue to engage with us – that’s part of our responsibility, too.”

 67.
Miami will be the first example, but if all of the races in North America can continue to attract the same attendance figures even amid an extreme period of dominance at the front of the field, then they must be doing something right.

 90.
Newey will leave in the first quarter of 2025 after 19 years at Red Bull, during which time he has helped the team to win seven drivers’ championships and six constructors’ titles. The news continues a tumultuous start to the year for Red Bull that began with a power struggle behind the scenes and Christian Horner being investigated for his behavior towards a female colleague, but the significance of Newey’s departure is being overstated, according to Verstappen.

 105.
“Of course Adrian from when he started at Red Bull, he was incredibly important for the success that they had,” Verstappen said. “Of course over time his role has changed a bit, and a lot of people don’t understand what he was actually doing.

 106.
“I don’t say he wasn’t doing anything, but his role has evolved. A lot of good people came into the team that have strengthened that whole department.

 107.
“Of course I would have preferred him to stay, because you can always rely on his experience and just as a person he is a great guy to chat to and relate to. He is very bright, very smart but he would also talk to the driver and interpret that into the car, in terms of he would try to imagine himself driving.

 108.
“But I also really trust that the technical team we have outside of Adrian is very, very strong. They have basically shown that with the last few years, with how competitive the car is. From the outside, it looks very dramatic. But I think if you know what is happening inside the team it is not as dramatic as it seems.”

 109.
Verstappen doesn’t believe Newey’s decision will have a major impact on the capabilities of Red Bull to defend its position as Formula 1’s current dominant team.

 110.
“I think all of these things a couple of years ago would have been a bit unexpected but I think it is always very important to remain calm and focused on your job, know who you’re working with, feel comfortable,” he said.

 111.
“At the end of the day, we need to have the fastest car, that’s what I always demanded, that’s what we finally got for a couple of years now. And we have a very strong technical team that are part of the team still for a long time. It goes on like it was going before.”

 112.
While Toto Wolff has been courting Verstappen should the instability at Red Bull cause him to leave, the Dutchman says Newey’s departure doesn’t directly impact his own future.

 113.
“Not at the moment,” he said. “I think people, in the press, they are making up a lot of things at the moment because they don’t understand how the roles were in the team. Like I said before, I cannot deny I would have preferred him to stay, just for how he is as a person, his knowledge and what he will bring potentially to another team if he wants to join. Besides that, I trust the people we have, they are incredibly good at what they do.

 114.
“At the moment, I can say that I want to stay with the team because I believe in the project that we have, with everyone involved. But at the end of the day, in sports, but also in life, you don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.”

 136.

Lewis Hamilton says it would be “a privilege” to work with Adrian Newey at Ferrari in 2025, following the news that the legendary designer will leave Red Bull.

 137.
Newey’s contract with Red Bull was due to expire at the end of next year but he has negotiated an earlier exit that will see him leave in the first quarter of 2025, following 19 years at the team. The chief technical officer becomes a free agent and has not announced his next move yet, and Hamilton says he would “very much” like for Newey to follow him to Ferrari.

 138.
“Adrian’s got such a great history, track record, and he’s obviously just done an amazing job throughout his career in engaging with teams and the knowledge that he has,” Hamilton said. “I think he would be an amazing addition.

 139.
“I think [Ferrari] have already got a great team, they’re already making huge progress and strides forward — their car is quicker this year — but yeah. it would be a privilege to work with him.

 140.
“If I was to do a list of people I would like to work with, he would absolutely be at the top of it.”

 155.
While Hamilton insists he doesn’t know what the chances are of him working with Newey in the future, he says he has felt part of his influence in his early career. He doesn’t believe Newey’s departure will overly weaken Red Bull, however.

 156.
“Just from my perspective, when I joined McLaren I think it was an evolution of his car. I think I got there just after he left,” Hamilton said. “That car had evolved from a concept that he had worked on. So I felt privileged that I had the chance to touch something he worked on.

 157.
“Racing against a team he’s been so heavily a part of for the years has been a massive challenge. But I think we always need to remember there’s a lot of people in the background. There is not one key person that… it’s not one person, it’s a whole team of people who do the job.

 158.
“So you can imagine, of all the amazing experience that he brings to the team, the people that he works with will continue to do an amazing job and I don’t anticipate Red Bull not continuing to build great cars moving forwards. But any team would be fortunate to have the opportunity to work with him.”

 207.

Erik Jones has been cleared to return to NASCAR competition, but Legacy Motor Club will keep him out of the car for another weekend out of an “abundance of caution.”

 208.
Corey Heim will drive the No. 43 Toyota at Kansas Speedway (Sunday, 3 p.m. ET, FS1). Heim made his Cup Series debut substituting for Jones at Dover Motor Speedway. He finished 25th.

 209.
The full statement from Legacy Motor Club:

 210.
“Erik Jones has been cleared to race by doctors and approved to return by NASCAR, but out of an abundance of caution, the team has opted for Jones to rest for another event. Corey Heim will drive the No. 43 Dollar Tree Toyota Camry XSE at Kansas Speedway this weekend.

 211.
“Jones will attend the race at Kansas Speedway to support crew chief Dave Elenz and the No. 43 team and plans to return to the driver’s seat next weekend at Darlington Raceway — a track where he has two NASCAR Cup Series victories.”

 280.

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship paddock has been boiling over with intrigue since the start of the year, and in recent weeks, a number of fascinating developments have emerged that nobody wants to touch, much less acknowledge or put their name on.

 281.
But what’s in play deserves RACER’s first IMSA silly season piece, all due to the seismic shifts taking place in its top hybrid GTP class ahead of 2025.

 282.
Let’s start with the biggest one so far, which RACER broke in March on Chip Ganassi Racing and General Motors preparing to split at the end of the season with the IMSA GTP program it runs for Cadillac Racing.

 283.
Since the end of the IMSA road for Ganassi and Cadillac will arrive in October, it means the glorious V-Series.Rs are headed to someone else’s house. And which house might that be?

 284.
The rumors for months have told the same tale and I don’t question their accuracy: With his new Cadillac relationship and their proposed partnership in Formula 1, Michael Andretti’s name has been mentioned at least a dozen times as someone working to expand his relationship with GM by representing Cadillac in IMSA GTP.

 285.
Where the Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti-to-Cadillac move was spoken of as being highly likely from January through March, it transitioned to being delivered as a fact by multiple sources leading into and during the Acura Grand Prix at Long Beach. It’s unclear if the deal has reached the point of a wedding ceremony, but at a minimum, engagement rings have been exchanged.

 286.
I asked one senior Andretti team leader about it on pit lane at Long Beach, and as expected, they said, “no comment.”

 287.
WTRA is said to be planning a two-car Cadillac GTP effort, which would allow a direct transfer of today’s two-car Acura ARX-06 GTP operation to the manufacturer WTR worked with from 2017 to 2020 and won the 2017 IMSA DPi championship and three Rolex 24 At Daytona victories for over that span.

 288.
Taylor, specifically, represented GM through its Pontiac and Corvette marques for more than a decade before the switch to Cadillac.

 289.
Together, with Andretti’s recent alliance with Cadillac and Taylor’s longstanding relationships with GM, the upcoming union was an easy one to predict. Andretti Cadillac in F1. Wayne Taylor Racing/Andretti Cadillac in IMSA. It makes too much sense to be untrue.

 290.
On the manufacturer side, I asked the head of Cadillac Racing’s communications to speak on the subject, and was told, “We’re focused on continuing our strong start to the season and winning the GTP championship. We’ll address 2025 when we have information to share about 2025.”

 291.
The obvious follow-up question involves WTRA and its current manufacturer partner, Acura.

 292.
Like GM with its Cadillac GTP effort, Acura is also understood to be in the second of a two-year deal with its current service provider, and like GM, Acura has sought proposals from other teams to weigh a possible move.

 293.
That recently changed from being a possibility to a necessity with WTRA seeking to leave and align with GM/Cadillac; Acura had to do more than just field inquiries; it’s needed to find a replacement for WTRA.

 294.
And the answer there should have been just as easy to identify as the reunion with WTRA and Cadillac.

 295.
As Honda’s top team in IndyCar, the Ganassi organization was expected to get the factory Acura deal and be fully aligned under the Honda Racing Corporation US banner that oversees its IMSA and IndyCar programs. But that isn’t happening.

 296.
What seemed like an impossibility last year is now in motion as the Meyer Shank Racing, which lost its factory Acura effort at the end of 2023 and exited the series — driven in part by its tire pressure scandal at Daytona — is set to reclaim the effort and make its return to IMSA and the Acura brand in 2025.

Michael Levitt/Motorsport Images

 298.
Speaking with an Acura Motorsports representative at Long Beach, they declined to discuss the topic, but did say, “We are committed to the Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti team and look forward to what the rest of the year holds in store for Acura.”

 299.
Shank wouldn’t be drawn on the matter, but did offer a polite smile when asked about it last weekend at Barber Motorsports Park.

 300.
The IMSA GTP silly season is on fire, and there’s more to come.

 365.

Alex Bowman doesn’t have a good story or memory of the paint scheme Jimmie Johnson dominated the NASCAR Cup Series with during the 2000s. But Bowman, of course, recognizes the design and gets to drive it himself later this month.

 366.
Ally, Bowman’s primary sponsor, has modeled its paint scheme for throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway (Sunday, May 12) after the Lowe’s car Johnson will forever be connected with. It’s the same design and color scheme Johnson drove from his rookie season in 2002 through 2005.

 367.
“When I was watching NASCAR races growing up, I probably wouldn’t have picked up on the subtle changes that the 48 had over the course of all the Lowe’s cars,” Bowman told RACER. “Until the end, when they started changing a bunch more, they were all similar for the most part. And I was a big Jeff Gordon fan anyway, so I was much more focused on cheering on the 24 anyway.

 368.
“But it’s definitely cool to get to drive it.”

 370.
Johnson’s paint scheme began to change in 2006 when the curve on the door went from in front of the No. 48 to behind the number, and the blue on the door went black. A neon stripe was also added from the rear bumper to in front of the rear wheel.

 371.
Another change to the scheme was it became primarily white in 2010. In 2012, the scheme went solid blue with white lettering. However, in 2015, the design returned to a more familiar look with the Lowe’s store sign outline on the hood and lines on the door. The final season for Lowe’s as Johnson’s sponsor was in 2018, and the car’s primary color was black.

 372.
Ally joined Hendrick Motorsports and Johnson in 2019. Bowman inherited the number and sponsor after Johnson’s retirement in 2020.

 373.
“To get to take over the 48 was really cool,” he said. “But back then (when Johnson won so much), things were way different.” Bowman continued with a laugh, “I don’t think all the cars in the field were the same back then by any means.

 374.
“But it’s definitely going to be really neat, and to see Jimmie’s reaction was really cool. Hopefully, we can get it in victory lane because obviously that car went to victory lane quite a bit.”

 376.
Bowman joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2016 as a substitute driver for Dale Earnhardt Jr. before becoming his successor when he retired a year later. It put Bowman in a unique situation of taking over for one popular driver while becoming teammates with another, who was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame earlier this year.

 377.
“Gosh, by far the best teammate ever,” Bowman said of Johnson. “He’s just a great human being (in) every category: work ethic, the way he treats people, he’s so good at all of it. To be able to learn from him was always really cool as a teammate. But then to be friends with him and talk to him was really fun. I’m just appreciative of all the support over the years; he made me a way better race car driver and person.”

 378.
The relationship between Bowman and Johnson started years before Bowman joined the company. Bowman’s first year in the Cup Series was 2014, and his first two years were spent driving underfunded equipment for Ron Devine (BK Racing) and Tommy Baldwin. Despite the difference in their garage hierarchy, Johnson was one of the first people to connect with and be complimentary of Bowman.

 379.
“I think he came up to me leaving the driver’s meeting somewhere and just started talking to me,” Bowman recalled. “He said, ‘Man, I can’t believe you could drive that thing last week because it was so loose. You had no grip.’ Which was primarily every weekend for the first two years of my career. It’s just cool to have somebody recognize that at that point in my career. In those days, my job was to maximize our day but also not ruin anybody else’s day.

 380.
“I feel like a lot of lapped cars these days, they’ll air block and race you and hang on to your quarter panel down the straightaway and slow you down. If you did that back then, it was not going to be OK. So, things have obviously changed a ton. But to earn somebody’s respect at that level, especially the respect of Jimmie, who was at the top of his game, meant a lot.”

 381.
Bowman has five wins (of the seven in his career) driving the No. 48 Chevrolet with Ally sponsorship. The group has sat on the Daytona 500 pole twice.

 382.
In 12 starts at Darlington, Bowman has three top-10 finishes. Among those is a runner-up finish from 2020.

 409.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has signed a multi-year contract extension with JTG Daugherty Racing to continue driving the No. 47 Chevrolet.

 410.
“When I joined this team in 2020, I knew both the team and I were capable of putting the No. 47 in victory lane,” Stenhouse said. “Although I wish it came sooner, winning the Daytona 500 last year proved that we can win together. We have a fantastic group of guys at the shop, great management, solid partners, and an ever-improving program. I’m very excited to continue my relationship with the team, I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised to see what we have in store for the future.”

 411.
Stenhouse has one win with JTG Daugherty Racing, which put them in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs last season. To date, Stenhouse has earned 22 top-10 finishes for the top with 220 laps led.

 426.
“I am looking forward to continuing with Ricky as our driver of the No. 47,” owner Gordon Smith said. “He has been an asset to our team on and off the racetrack since joining us in 2020. Winning the Daytona 500 was a huge accomplishment for our small team, and I know we have more trips to victory lane in our future with Ricky at the wheel.”

 427.
JTG Daugherty Racing is a single-car operation.

 428.
“We are very excited to have Ricky locked in for years to come,” co-owner Brad Daugherty said. “Ricky has continued to grow and thrive as a competitor and he, along with the rest of our race team are pushing hard to get the 47 back into victory lane.”

 429.
Stenhouse has two top-10 finishes through 11 races. He is 27th in the point standings going into Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway.
