41.
(Reuters) -European shares closed lower on Friday, as investors turned cautious following remarks from a policymaker on the outlook for monetary policy, while Richemont logged its best day in over three months after announcing a management rejig.

 42.
The pan-European STOXX 600 dipped 0.1%, with the rate-sensitive real estate sector among top decliners, pressured by higher euro zone bond yields.

 43.
A report showed European Central Bank board member Isabel Schnabel advocated caution about further interest rate cuts after a likely first one in June, bringing uncertainties about the outlook for rate reductions to the fore.

 44.
On the data front, a final reading of euro zone inflation confirmed a previous report that showed prices increased 2.4% on an annual basis in April.

 45.
ECB policymakers have not offered clarity on the outlook of rate cuts beyond June, while U.S. Federal Reserve policymakers have not openly shifted their views about rate cut timing despite recent encouraging U.S. economic data.

 46.
“The market is in a good place in medium term. Central banks are doing what they can and they still want to cut this year, but just very steadily,” said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at online trading platform at IG.

 47.
“The worry is if inflation starts to move higher, so that’s one thing to keep an eye on, particularly heading into June and beyond.”

 48.
The main equities index managed to end its second straight week in gains, rising for nine straight sessions till Wednesday, as a robust earnings season offered a fresh boost to the prevailing upbeat investor sentiment.

 49.
According to LSEG data, of the 239 companies in the STOXX 600 that have reported quarterly earnings as of Tuesday, over 60% have exceeded analyst estimates, more than a long-term average of 54%.

 50.
Azelis fell 13% to notch its worst day on record after major shareholders EQT Partners and PSP Investments sold shares in the specialty chemicals maker.

 51.
Nibe lost 11.9% and bottomed the STOXX as Citigroup downgraded the Swedish heat-pump maker to “neutral” from “buy”.

 52.
On the flip side, Switzerland’s main index outperformed, driven by a 5.3% in Richemont after the luxury company reported what Jefferies analysts described as “reassuringly resilient” fourth-quarter results, and naming Nicolas Bos as group CEO. The broader luxury sector was up 1%.

 53.
German’s main index was flat, with utility firm E.ON down 5.2% on trading ex-dividend.

 54.
Lagercrantz Group AB jumped 5.3% to top the STOXX 600 after fourth-quarter earnings, while H&M rose 3.4% after RBC upgraded the fashion retailer to “outperform” from “sector perform”.

 55.
French re-insurer Scor dropped 6% after first-quarter results missed expectations.

 56.
Investors also await ratings agency Fitch’s review of Spain’s credit rating.

 69.

Dollar mostly flat as market mulls inflation outlook

 70.
By Herbert Lash and Iain Withers

 71.
NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) – The dollar traded little changed against major currencies on Friday as market speculation continues to swirl about the timing of Federal Reserve rate cuts amid signs of cooling yet persistent inflation and a softening U.S. economy.

 72.
While consumer prices rose less than expected in April, leading to a risk-on flavor in equity markets, various Fed officials have sounded a word of caution about when rates may fall, limiting the dollar’s decline this week.

 73.
The dollar index, which tracks the U.S. currency against six peers, fell 0.03% at 104.46 after earlier trading about 0.3% higher.

 74.
Futures markets are pricing in almost 46 basis points, or about two 25 bps of Fed rate cuts by December, but the likelihood of a cut as early as September has slipped.

 75.
“It literally might be a handful of CPI reports and a handful of jobs reports before the Fed moves,” said Matt Weller, global head of research at FOREX.com in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

 76.
“The market over-reacted perhaps on Wednesday and now we’re seeing a little bit of that over-reaction come off and that inflation could re-accelerate.”

 77.
U.S. inflation accelerated in the first quarter amid strong domestic demand after moderating for much of last year. Last month’s slowdown was a relief after data on Tuesday showed a jump in producer prices in April.

 78.
Policymakers said on Thursday that still-high inflation warrants keeping rates at current levels and that reaching the Fed’s 2% inflation target will take longer than previously thought.

 79.
A surprisingly large 0.9% jump in import prices on Thursday kept inflation worries high as rising import costs will only add to inflationary pressures.

 80.
Even though markets are pricing European rate cuts beginning in June, recent data has shown some upside surprises. Germany’s economy grew more than expected last quarter and investor morale is at a two-year high.

 81.
Euro zone consumer inflation data on Friday came in at 2.4% year-on-year in April, in line with a Reuters poll.

 82.
The euro rose 0.03% against the dollar to $1.0872.

 83.
Euro zone policymakers have increased confidence that inflation will ease back to target next year due to easing price pressures, ECB Vice-President Luis de Guindos said on Friday.

 84.
Largely disappointing Chinese data on Friday helped keep market risk sentiment in check. Factory output topped forecasts but retail sales slowed and home prices fell at their fastest pace in more than nine years.

 85.
Sterling rose 0.21% to $1.2692, while the dollar gained 0.05% on the Japanese yen at 155.455.

 86.
In cryptocurrency markets, bitcoin was up 1.7% at $66,6399.

 101.
By Caroline Valetkevitch

 102.
NEW YORK (Reuters) -World stock indexes edged higher and U.S. Treasury yields also rose on Friday as investors tried to assess the timing of potential interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year.

 103.
Major U.S. stock indexes were slightly higher and on track for gains for the week.

 104.
Copper surged to a 26-month peak after China announced fresh support for its ailing property sector, while nickel prices touched their highest level since August 2023 amid unrest in nickel producer New Caledonia.

 105.
Data from earlier this week showing softening consumer prices in April boosted expectations that the U.S. central bank will be able to cut rates twice this year, beginning in September.

 106.
Much depends, however, on what happens with price pressures in the coming months, and Fed officials have hinted U.S. rates may not fall anytime soon.

 107.
Minutes from the Fed’s most recent policy meeting are due next week and may offer more detail on what Fed officials are looking at in order to begin cutting rates. The meeting from April 30–May 1, however, was before Wednesday’s CPI data.

 108.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 34.48 points, or 0.09%, to 39,903.86; the S&P 500 gained 5.75 points, or 0.11%, to 5,302.88; and the Nasdaq Composite gained 25.13 points, or 0.15%, to 16,723.65.

 109.
“People are now looking at the next catalyst. Most likely it’s going to be whether or not the Fed actually cuts,” said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth.

 110.
MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe rose 0.81 point, or 0.10%, to 794.89. The STOXX 600 index fell 0.15%.

 111.
In Asia, Chinese blue-chips staged a late rally on Friday, as the government unveiled a series of “historic” steps to underpin the property sector, which has lurched from crisis to crisis and weighed on overall economic growth.

 112.
Shanghai’s CSI 300 ended up 1%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index hit its highest since August 2022, up 0.9%.

 113.
In Treasuries, the yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes rose 1.9 basis points to 4.396%, from 4.377% late on Thursday.

 114.
The dollar traded little changed against major currencies.

 115.
The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, fell 0.07% to 104.43, with the euro up 0.07% at $1.0874.

 116.
Against the Japanese yen, the dollar strengthened 0.01% to 155.42.

 117.
The Japanese currency has fallen around 9.5% this year as the Bank of Japan has kept monetary policy loose while higher U.S. rates have drawn money toward U.S. bonds and the dollar.

 118.
Tokyo is suspected to have intervened on at least two days in late April and early May to support the yen after it tumbled to lows last seen more than three decades ago.

 119.
Three-month nickel on London Metal Exchange (LME) surged 7.5% to $21,290 a metric ton by 1335 GMT, after touching $21,365, the highest since August 2023.

 120.
LME copper climbed 2% to $10,627 per ton, the strongest since March 2022.

 121.
U.S. crude gained 0.2% to $79.39 a barrel and Brent rose to $83.44 per barrel, up 0.2% on the day.

 134.

Engie Q1 profit drops on warmer winter, steady market

 135.
By America Hernandez

 136.
PARIS (Reuters) – French energy company Engie said on Friday first-quarter earnings fell 3.2% as a warmer than usual winter depressed demand for natural gas and price volatility eased.

 137.
The company, which produces, transports and sells gas and electricity, said earnings before interest and tax (EBIT), excluding nuclear, totalled 3.7 billion euros ($4.02 billion), versus 3.8 billion euros in the same period of 2023.

 138.
“We’ve started the year pretty well, despite less favourable conditions than last year as the market stabilises, which shows the resilience of our business model,” said finance chief Pierre-Francois Riolacci.

 139.
Engie in recent years has sought to sell off assets and refocus on its core business of natural gas infrastructure and sales, while spending the profits on renewables.

 140.
Profits at oil and gas firms are still retreating from 2022 records, when natural gas prices spiked after Russia invaded Ukraine.

 141.
Spot gas prices in Europe have tumbled about 40% in the last year, hit by mild winter weather and easing supply worries.

 142.
Engie’s revenues for the quarter fell 24.6% to 22 billion euros, it said.

 143.
Overall, the company said it made 136 million euros less across distribution networks and sales because winter temperatures in France were higher than normal.

 144.
Much of the decline was offset by renewables, largely thanks to higher hydroelectric production in France, and flexible generation businesses.

 145.
Engie increased its renewable assets by buying two biogas sites in the Netherlands, acquiring Orsted’s portfolio of French onshore wind farms, and securing financing for newly commissioned wind and solar projects in the United States totalling 1.3 gigawatts (GW).

 146.
The company also won a 1.3 GW offshore wind contract in Australia via Ocean Winds, its joint venture with EDP, and started up a battery storage project in Chile

 147.
Engie has been unable to find a buyer for its loss-making subsidiary EV Box, which makes electric vehicle charging stations and software, and now hopes to sell off individual sites.

 148.
“It’s an activity that has suffered in recent years … with the Ukraine crisis and soaring energy prices, plus national governments revising their subsidy schemes leading to a massive slowdown in installations,” Riolacci said.

 149.
“We’ve done all we could to set the company right, but in the end it’s not our main business,” he added, saying it was premature to discuss closures or layoffs for some 700 workers in mostly the Netherlands.

 150.
Engie said it was still targeting an annual net recurring income on a group share basis of 4.2-4.8 billion euros.

 169.
MADRID (Reuters) – Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim’s Spanish unit FCC plans to spin off its cement and real estate assets into a separate business to be called Inmocemento, which would be then listed on the Madrid stock market.

 170.
FCC’s board believes the move would boost shareholder value as the new and existing companies are likely to be worth more apart than together, FCC said in a filing to the stock market regulator on Thursday evening.

 171.
Inmocemento would take FCC’s cement plants and the majority stake it owns in real estate developer Realia as well as the minority stake in bigger Metrovacesa.

 172.
Current FCC shareholders would get Inmocemento stakes equivalent to their holdings in FCC, the filing said.

 173.
FCC currently owns assets in different industries such as construction, water and sewerage services, waste management, cement and real estate.

 174.
FCC’s cement units made 614 million euros ($667 million) of revenue in 2023, while income from real estate was 254 million euros. Together, cement and real estate represented about 8.7% of FCC’s revenue.

 192.
(Reuters) – GSK has raised 1.25 billion pounds ($1.52 billion) from selling its entire remaining stake in consumer healthcare firm Haleon, the British drugmaker said on Friday.

 193.
GSK sold around 385 million shares at 324 pence apiece, amounting to a 4.2% stake in Haleon. The company was formed in a merger of GSK and Pfizer’s consumer healthcare businesses in 2019.

 194.
The sale was at a discount of about 2.5% to Haleon’s last close of 332.4 pence on Thursday.

 195.
The sell-off will allow GSK to sharpen its focus on vaccines, cancer and infectious diseases, which has been CEO Emma Walmsley’s major focus to boost earnings at the drugmaker under its current strategy.

 196.
Haleon, in which GSK initially had a nearly 13% stake, was spun out and listed on the London Stock Exchange in July 2022.

 214.
LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s Sainsbury’s said on Friday it has agreed a five-year strategic partnership with Microsoft that will use the technology company’s artificial intelligence capabilities and the supermarket group’s rich data.

 215.
Seeking revenue gains and cost savings, more retailers are using generative AI to boost personalised shopping experiences for consumers and make staff working practices more efficient.

 216.
Sainsbury’s, Britain’s second-largest grocer after Tesco, said it would use AI to create a more interactive shopping experience for online shoppers, while also improving search functions.

 217.
In stores, staff would have real-time data and insights for key processes, such as shelf replenishment.

 218.
Time to market for new services and product innovations would also be reduced, Sainsbury’s said.

 238.
(Reuters) -Dutch technology investor Prosus and its South African parent group Naspers on Friday named Fabricio Bloisi as the new chief executive, replacing long-time boss Bob van Dijk who stepped down last September.

 239.
Bloisi, currently the CEO at iFood, a food delivery business in Latin America, will assume the role for both the companies on July 1, Prosus said in a statement.

 240.
“He (Bloisi) has a combination of vision, deep operational experience and strong discipline. It is this skill set, which the Board believes make him the right person to now lead us,” Prosus and Naspers Chair Koos Bekker said in a statement.

 241.
Outgoing CEO Dijk oversaw Prosus’s initial public offering in 2019 and the company stock’s upbeat performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, its shares fell along with technology valuations in the post-pandemic bust, struggling to reduce a discount in its value versus rival Tencent.

 256.

Trends in Digital Banking Security: From Encryption to Behavioral Biometrics

 257.

 258.
Introduction

 259.
Digital banking security has become a paramount concern for both financial institutions and consumers alike. With the rise of cyber threats and data breaches, banks are increasingly turning to advanced technologies to protect their customers’ sensitive information. This article explores the latest trends in digital banking security, focusing on the evolution of encryption and the emergence of behavioral biometrics as key strategies to enhance security.

 260.
The Importance of Digital Banking Security

 261.
Digital banking offers convenience and accessibility, allowing customers to manage their finances anytime, anywhere. However, this convenience also comes with risks, as cybercriminals seek to exploit vulnerabilities in digital banking systems to steal sensitive information and commit fraud.

 262.
To address these risks, financial institutions must implement robust security measures to protect their customers’ data and ensure the integrity of their digital banking platforms. Encryption and behavioral biometrics are two key technologies that are playing an increasingly important role in enhancing digital banking security.

 263.
Evolution of Encryption in Digital Banking

 264.
Encryption is a fundamental technology used to protect sensitive information in digital banking systems. It works by converting data into a coded format that can only be decoded with the correct decryption key. In recent years, encryption algorithms have become more sophisticated, making it increasingly difficult for cybercriminals to intercept and decipher encrypted data.

 265.
One of the latest trends in encryption is the use of end-to-end encryption (E2EE), which ensures that data is encrypted from the point of origin to the point of destination, making it virtually impossible for anyone other than the intended recipient to access the data. This has become particularly important in digital banking, where sensitive information such as account numbers and passwords are transmitted over the internet.

 266.
Behavioral Biometrics: The Next Frontier in Digital Banking Security

 267.
Behavioral biometrics is a cutting-edge technology that analyzes patterns in user behavior to verify their identity. Unlike traditional biometric technologies such as fingerprints or facial recognition, which rely on physical characteristics, behavioral biometrics focuses on how users interact with digital devices, such as their typing patterns, mouse movements, and touchscreen gestures.

 268.
Behavioral biometrics offers several advantages over traditional biometric technologies. It is more difficult for cybercriminals to spoof, as it is based on unique behavioral patterns that are difficult to replicate. Additionally, behavioral biometrics can provide continuous authentication, ensuring that users remain authenticated throughout their digital banking session.

 269.
Trends in Behavioral Biometrics

 270.
The adoption of behavioral biometrics in digital banking is on the rise, driven by its effectiveness in combating fraud and enhancing the user experience. One of the key trends in behavioral biometrics is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms, which can analyze vast amounts of behavioral data to identify patterns and anomalies indicative of fraudulent activity.

 271.
Moreover, behavioral biometrics is being used in conjunction with other security measures, such as two-factor authentication (2FA), to provide an additional layer of security. By combining multiple authentication factors, financial institutions can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access and fraud.

 272.
Challenges and Considerations

 273.
While encryption and behavioral biometrics offer significant benefits for digital banking security, there are also challenges and considerations that financial institutions must address. One challenge is the need to balance security with user convenience. While robust security measures are essential, they should not impede the user experience or make digital banking overly complex for customers.

 274.
Moreover, financial institutions must ensure that they comply with relevant data protection regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), when implementing encryption and behavioral biometrics. This includes obtaining appropriate consent from customers and ensuring that their data is processed securely and responsibly.

 275.
Future Outlook

 276.
Looking ahead, the future of digital banking security is likely to be shaped by advancements in encryption and behavioral biometrics. Encryption algorithms will continue to evolve to keep pace with emerging cyber threats, while behavioral biometrics will become more sophisticated and integrated into a wider range of digital banking applications.

 277.
Moreover, the adoption of open banking and the Internet of Things (IoT) will present new security challenges for financial institutions, requiring them to continually innovate and adapt their security strategies to protect against evolving threats.

 278.
Conclusion

 279.
In conclusion, encryption and behavioral biometrics are playing an increasingly important role in enhancing digital banking security. By leveraging these technologies, financial institutions can protect their customers’ sensitive information and provide a secure and seamless digital banking experience. As cyber threats continue to evolve, it is crucial for financial institutions to remain vigilant and proactive in implementing robust security measures to safeguard their digital banking platforms.
