As OpenAI’s Deal Comes to an End, Google DeepMind Hires Windsurf’s Top Executives and Employees!

The Windsurf-acquisition by OpenAI was something that took the headlines and it was discussed to be the brand’s largest acquisition so far. However, all has come to an end as the exclusivity period of the Windsurf-acquisition for OpenAI expired yesterday (Friday, 11th of July 2025). Windsurf did not have to wait for long to find a better offer as Google is now already there in the picture with an even better ‘acquihire’ deal and a non-exclusive license to some of the Windsurf technologies.

Speaking more, it has been reported that Google – the California-based tech giant, has hired Varun Mohan – CEO of Windsurf, Douglas Chen – Co-Founder of Windsurf, and a few other top employees of Windsurf to DeepMind, and together both Google DeepMind and Windsurf has decided to work alongside in the AI tech market. Also to add, Google has not asked for any stake in Windsurf and does not have any control over Windsurf or its operations. Moreover, since Google has signed up for a non-exclusive license to Windsurf technologies, Windsurf will also be able to license its technologies to other companies as well.

For Windsurf, Jeff Wang – the company’s Head of Businesses will be taking over the charge as the interim CEO. Also, only a few of the 250 employees of Windsurf have joined Google’s DeepMind and most of them will continue and remain working for Windsurf itself.

And this is likely due to the tariff situation currently going on in the US market that has raised costs for the companies as well as consumers.

The company has shared its statement with Wired writer Julian Chokkattu. In the statement, it was mentioned, “Like many global businesses, HMD is navigating a challenging geopolitical and economic environment. After careful consideration, we have made the decision to scale back our US operations.”

The company’s webstore is no longer online, while product pages of both HMD and Nokia devices either don’t have a buying option, or the Where to buy option is not functional. Though some handsets are still available to buy from Amazon and other retailers in the market.

In the statement, HMD has also mentioned that it will continue to honour all obligations, including warranty coverage and service for existing products, and provide full support through its global teams so that its consumers and partners can experience a seamless transition

The company also adds that it will support its US colleagues who are impacted by this change during the transition.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman today announced that the release is again delayed as the company needs time to run additional safety tests and review high-risk areas. He added, “While we trust the community will build great things with this model, once weights are out, they can’t be pulled back. This is new for us, and we want to get it right.”

OpenAI’s open model will be made available for developers to freely download and run locally. It is said that the upcoming open model is slated to have similar reasoning capabilities to OpenAI’s o-series of models, while the model is expected to compete with other open reasoning models like DeepSeek’s R1. The CEO has not revealed the exact launch timeline for when this model will be officially released.

But for now, developers will have to wait a bit more to try OpenAI’s open model.

This is with regards to the company’s aim of becoming the next unicorn startup company of India.

Will AstroTalk Become the Next Indian Unicorn Startup Company?

In 2025, India has already witnessed a few startup brands achieving unicorn valuation (~ Juspay, Drools, Porter, Jumbotail, Netradyne), and AstroTalk could be the next in line. Reports have now arrived which claims that AstroTalk as part of its next funding rounds is planning to raise another USD 50 to USD 100 million in funds, and this is following the USD 14 million fund that the company acquired back in June 2024. Just to add, so far the company has been able to raise funds of about USD 34 million.

Speaking more about the company’s progress, this FY25, AstroTalk was able to make a profit of INR 250 crore, with a revenue of over INR 1182 crore. Notably, when compared with AstroTalk’s FY24 revenue of INR 651 crore and profit of INR 100 crore, the company performed really well in FY25. The growth in profit also proves that in India, Astrology is more profitable in comparison to FinTech.

With the new funds, AstroTalk is believed to bring up its valuation from the previous USD 300 million to more than USD 1.3 billion (USD 1.3 billion ~ USD 1.5 billion range as reported). Also to note, the new funding round is also said to be the last one for the company before it starts with its IPO process and publicly lists itself in the Indian stock market.

Stay tuned for more updates.

This is designed to significantly boost memory speed and efficiency for a variety of uses, including mobile devices and AI.

For enabling AI applications and other high-performance workloads, LPDDR6 employs a dual sub-channel architecture that allows for flexible operation while maintaining a small access granularity of 32 bytes.

Let’s take a look at the key features of the LPDDR6 Standard

High performance

2 sub-channels per die, 12 data signal lines (DQs) per sub-channel to optimize channel performance capabilities

Each sub-channel includes 4 command/address (CA) signals, optimized to reduce ball count and improve data access speed

Static efficiency mode is designed to support high-capacity memory configurations and maximize bank resource utilization

Flexible data access, on-the-fly burst length control to support 32B & 64B access

Dynamic write NT-ODT (non-target on-die termination) enables the memory to adjust ODT based on workload demands, improving signal integrity

Power Efficiency

LPDDR6 operates with a lower voltage and low power consumption capable VDD2 supply as compared to LPDDR5, and mandates two supplies for VDD2

Alternating clock command inputs are used to enhance performance and efficiency

Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling for Low Power (DVFSL) lowers the VDD2 supply during low-frequency operation to reduce power consumption

Dynamic Efficiency mode utilizes a single sub-channel interface for low-power, low-bandwidth use cases

Support for both partial self and active refresh to reduce refresh power usage

Security and Reliability

Per Row Activation Counting (PRAC) to support DRAM data integrity

Carve-out Meta mode is defined to enhance overall system reliability by allocating specific memory regions for critical tasks

Support for programmable link protection scheme and on-die error correction code (ECC)

Capable of supporting Command/Address (CA) parity, error scrubbing, and memory built-in self-test (MBIST) for enhanced error detection and system reliability

Previously in its presentation, the company revealed that LPDDR6 may offer a 14.4Gbps highest defined data rate, and introductory bandwidth will be 32Gbps. Development plans for LPDDR6 included a focus on increasing bandwidth, lowering power usage and enhanced RAS.

It is expected that LPDDR6-based memory products will make their debut in late 2025. However, we should wait for official confirmation to know the details.
