20.
Despite 3 big wins in April and June, the USWNT drop a spot.

The United States Women’s National Team are unbeaten in their last seven matches, but that wasn’t enough to rise in the world rankings. Today, FIFA released the June 2024 Women’s Ranking, and the USWNT dropped one spot to 5th. It furthers the worst ranking the USWNT have had since the rankings began in 2003.

 21.
The USWNT were 4th in the world in the March 2024 Women’s Ranking, and went on to defeat Japan and Canada (on penalties) to win the 2024 SheBelieves Cup. In recent friendlies earlier this month again South Korea, the USWNT held clean sheets in two wins. Those matches only added 4.75 points to their total, which wasn’t enough to hold off Germany for 4th.

 22.
Spain remains the #1 team in the world, but there was a lot of movement among the rest of the Top 10. The top 10 teams in the world, in order: Spain, France England, Germany, USA, Sweden, Japan, Canada, Brazil, and North Korea.

 23.
The next matches for the USWNT will be against Mexico (29th) and Costa Rica (44th) in what will be Olympic send-off matches for the team in mid-July. They will then head to France for the 2024 Summer Olympics, where they will play Zambia (64th), Germany (4th), and Australia (12th) in the group stage.

 52.
A free kick was the difference.

The United States Men’s National Team rebounded from a humiliating 5-1 loss to Colombia last week by coming out against Brazil looking like they were actually interested in playing some soccer on Wednesday. The USMNT played strong defensively, built well with the ball on occasion, and made enough of their opportunities to walk away with a respectable 1-1 draw.

 53.
The ratings for the Brazil match was a huge shift from the Colombia match, when just five players scored over a 5, no one saw even 5.5 or higher, and the “Man of the Match” was the match official. For Wednesday, no player scored below a 5 and the only starter below 5.5 was Ricardo Pepi.

 54.
A strong defensive effort led the way for the team Wednesday, with four of the top five highest rated players being on the defense. That included Matt Turner, who had 11 saves and despite some trouble with the ball at his feet contributing to the only Brazil goal, ended with a 7.50 match rating for the day.

 55.
Despite the strong defensive showing, it was ultimately goal scorer Christian Pulisic who managed the SSFC Man of the Match honors on the night. Pulisic’s well taken free kick to tie the game at 1-1 was enough to tip the scales in his balance, as he earned a 7.77 rating on the day.

 56.
Here are the ratings for all of the players from the match:

 57.
Christian Pulisic - 7.77

 58.
Matt Turner - 7.50

 59.
Joe Scally - 7.01

 60.
Tim Ream - 6.88

 65.
Gio Reyna - 5.88

 67.
Weston McKennie - 5.69

 68.
Folarin Balogun (sub) - 5.63

 69.
Brenden Aaronson (sub) - 5.50

 70.
Tyler Adams (sub) - 5.45

 71.
Shaq Moore (sub) - 5.12

 72.
Ricardo Pepi - 5.01

 73.
—

 74.
Coach - Gregg Berhalter - 6.12

 75.
Official - Hector Said Martinez Sorto - 6.36

 96.
Only Timmy Tillman misses the cut.

The United States Men’s National Team is ready to take on the Americas. Today, U.S. Soccer announced the 26-man roster for the USMNT that will compete at the 2024 Copa América.

 97.
The roster has been together for a couple of weeks as they completed tune-up friendlies against Colombia and Brazil. Timmy Tillman was the only player on the friendly roster who does not make the final Copa América roster. The USMNT now gets ready for their opening match against Bolivia on June 23rd at AT&T Stadium in the Dallas area. They will also play Panama on June 27th at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and wrap up group play with a pivotal match against Uruguay on July 1st at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

 98.
Every player on the roster has been previously named to a tournament roster for the USMNT, (World Cup, Gold Cup, 2016 Copa América, CNL Finals), which is remarkable considering that this is the second-youngest roster the United States has sent to a Copa América. Only the 2007 roster was younger.

 99.
Forward Josh Sargent remains on the roster despite concerns over his injury sustained late in the season for Norwich City. Should it be determined that Sargent is not healthy enough to play, a roster change can be made up to 24 hours before the start of the team’s opening match against Bolivia. The hope is that he will be ready to go in a week’s time.

 100.
The 26-player Copa América roster:

 101.
GOALKEEPERS (3): Ethan Horvath (Cardiff City), Sean Johnson (Toronto FC), Matt Turner (Nottingham Forest)

 103.
MIDFIELDERS (7): Tyler Adams (Bournemouth), Johnny Cardoso (Real Betis), Luca de la Torre (Celta Vigo), Weston McKennie (Juventus), Yunus Musah (AC Milan), Gio Reyna (Nottingham Forest), Malik Tillman (PSV Eindhoven)

 104.
FORWARDS (7): Brenden Aaronson (Union Berlin), Folarin Balogun (Monaco), Ricardo Pepi (PSV Eindhoven), Christian Pulisic (AC Milan), Josh Sargent (Norwich City), Tim Weah (Juventus), Haji Wright (Coventry City)

 132.
The defender could see her fortunes rise with Emma Hayes.

The United States Women’s National Team enjoyed a successful training camp, reeling off two victories against Korea Republic (4-0, 3-0). In addition to serving as advanced preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games, the friendlies provided the opportunity for multiple new players to enter the senior level, whether as full members of the roster or training players. After several seasons as a professional, Sam Staab made her debut and demonstrated her potential utility to the program. The 27-year-old Chicago Red Stars defender is known as one of the sport’s “iron women” and coming off of a career season in the National Women’s Soccer League.

 134.
Born in San Diego, California, Staab competed with DMCV Sharks at the club level, winning back-to-back USYSA National Championships along with the Surf Cup and the Manchester Nike Cup. At the high school level, she led Scripps Ranch High School to four league championships and a state runners-up finish. Starting out as more of an attacking player than a defender, her youth career ended with being named to the All-CIF Team in 2014.

 135.
Staab then matriculated to Clemson University, making an immediate impact due to being “competitive in the tackle and the air” with a broad “range of passing.” During her four-year collegiate career, she played in and started 80 matches, contributing five goals and 33 assists. Her senior season concluded with being named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-ACC, and Third-Team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches. Her summers included stints with the San Diego SeaLions and San Diego Parceiro Ladies in the amateur Women’s Premier Soccer League.

In her first season, she played every available minute across 24 appearances and scored her debut goal in a 2-0 victory over Sky Blue FC, earning back-to-back Team of the Month selections. At the conclusion of the schedule, Australian side Western Sydney Wanderers brought her in on loan, which included 13 matches and two finishes.

 149.
Washington proved to be the perfect environment to begin her professional career with a major focus on post-match recovery, leading to a sturdiness that has defined her as a player. “I think I got lucky being drafted to a team that was reinventing their backline at the time,” Staab shared. “I came in and made a name for myself with the coaches initially and have kept with that ever since. I’ve learned a lot about recovery in my first couple years already just because you wouldn’t be able to thrive given the harsh demand of the league without proper recovery and rest. I think the injury just changed my perspective on little additional things my body needs daily in order to be my best.”

 150.
In 2022, Staab played every available minute for Washington, a run that included a second-place finish at the Challenge Cup. After signing a new three-year contract with the club, she repeated the feat last season, breaking the league record for consecutive starts. Her performances earned two Team of the Month citations, a spot on the NWSL Best XI, and consideration for Defender of the Year.

 157.

 158.
During the offseason, Staab was traded to the Chicago Red Stars, with the club signing her to a three-year contract extension while praising her “skills and experience” with the expectation of her becoming “a cornerstone in solidifying the back line.” She has appeared in 12 matches for the Windy City side, playing every available minute, as expected, and setting the NWSL record for consecutive starts while being named to the two opening Best XI squads for April and May. Coaches have given her “the freedom to take chances going forward,” but the defender is cautious and waits for the right moment.

 159.
At the international level, Staab played for the United States in the U-19 and U-23 groups, registering a first-place finish at the 2018 Nordic Tournament with the latter team after scoring the game-winning goal in the concluding 1-0 victory against hosts Norway. Her first senior call-up came during the most recent camp that included two friendlies against Korea Republic. She entered into the first match in the 61st minute for her debut and played the full 90 in the second fixture, appreciating the opportunity to “be a part of Emma Hayes’ process” and “take as much in as possible.”

She is praised as “one of the best passing [defenders] in the NWSL” and displays “great skill in distribution” and “calmness under pressure,” with the ability to “slide past [an opponent] and fire a diagonal pass to a midfielder.” Additional assets include the ability to “disrupt play with her positioning” and provide “extended set-piece opportunities” with her dangerous long throw-ins.

 168.
“Where she really shines is the long ball,” observed Busy Watching Women’s Soccer. “She has a phenomenal long ball: really accurate, good distance to it, and it just screams, ‘Emma Hayes’... She’s very, very comfortable on the dribble and just escapes... The combination of the two makes her really effective... Because she is so good with her feet, such a good distributor of the ball, she’s actually really able to come help on the attack... She’s very comfortable being [the] last passing option, so she’s really able to keep things going.”

 176.
Staab has not so quietly been one of the most consistent performers in the NWSL since making her professional debut in 2019 and was finally given the invitation to the USWNT. Whether due to a change in management or on the heels of a career season, she made the most of the opportunity at her debut camp and earned the first senior cap. Her entry may have come a little late for serious Olympic consideration, but the 2027 World Cup cycle could see the defender’s emergence as a key figure.

It was a hot one indeed as Brazil largely controlled the possession and outshot the US 25 to 12. However, eleven saves from Matt Turner and a free-kick goal from Christian Pulisic were enough for the US to pull out a tie.

 242.
A good response from the USA

The USMNT returned to action following a terrible performance against Colombia with a better performance against Brazil. Indeed the team held their own against one of the world’s best teams and even created chances to take the lead. While the match ended in a 1-1 draw, the USA had a much better performance and looked prepared to compete in the Copa America.

 243.
The USA set up wtih some changes as Ricardo Pepi started up top and Yunus Musah came in at midfield.

 260.
The Americans were more organized and more intentional going forward against Brazil. Still, it would be something of a repeat of the kinds of goals the team was giving up against Colombia that gave their opponents the lead. A turnover off of a goal kick in midfield was quickly transitioned by Brazil and Rodrygo put the visitors up in the 17th minute.

 268.
The Americans were behind but showed a lot of fight in the match, That was rewarded when a free kick was awarded to the USA and set up Christian Pulisic sneaking it into the Brazil goal.

 275.

 276.
While the teams ended the half at one goal apiece, the USA looked competitive with one of the top teams in the world. For the first 20 minutes or so of the second 45 Brazil kept most of the possession and seemed unbothered by the Stars and Strpies.

 277.
In the 64th minute Folarin Balogun replaced Ricardo Pepi and Johnny Cardosa came in for Gio Reyna. In the 68th minute Pulisic got on the end of a throughball that he fired at goal but Alisson kept the ball out of the net.

 278.
While both teams would have chances, it never seemed like either team was going to find a breakthrough. Defensively, the USA stayed organized and handled the technical skills shown by Brazil well.

 279.
The visitors nearly found a late game winner as Matt Turner was forced into a pair of saves as the clock expired in injury time.

 299.
Time to regroup.

The United States Men’s National Team continue to prepare for Copa América tonight when they take on Brazil in the Allstate Continental Clásico. The USMNT want to have a better showing than they did in the DC area over the weekend, where they lost 5-1 to Colombia. They look to put that behind them to take on a Brazil team that is one of the favorites to win the entire tournament.

 300.
It’s yet another test that the USMNT need to show that they’re prepared to take. Another bad performance will have people questioning whether the team really has what it takes to do well in Copa América. Still, it’s Brazil, 5-time World Cup champions and the current 5th ranked team in the world. They have players who have won Copa Américas, multiple UEFA Champions Leagues, and almost every major trophy you can imagine. The USMNT have their work cut out for them, and let’s see if they’ve learned from Saturday’s performance and come out swinging.

 339.
Four changes from the Colombia debacle.

Tonight, the USMNT will face Brazil in a friendly in Orlando, FL. On Monday, we published a poll to get readers’ picks for the starting lineup. After a record-shattering 703 responses, let’s look at the results!

 340.
Here’s the roster readers were choosing from:

 341.
GOALKEEPERS (3): Ethan Horvath (Cardiff City/WAL; 9/0), Sean Johnson (Toronto FC/CAN; 13/0), Matt Turner (Nottingham Forest/ENG; 39/0)

 342.
DEFENDERS (9): Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic/SCO; 16/0), Kristoffer Lund (Palermo/ITA; 3/0), Mark McKenzie (Genk/BEL; 13/0), Shaq Moore (Nashville SC; 18/1), Tim Ream (Fulham/ENG; 56/1), Chris Richards (Crystal Palace/ENG; 16/1), Antonee Robinson (Fulham/ENG; 41/4), Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati; 29/3), Joe Scally (Borussia Mönchengladbach/GER; 9/0)

 343.
MIDFIELDERS (8): Tyler Adams (Bournemouth/ENG; 38/2), Johnny Cardoso (Real Betis/ESP; 11/0), Luca de la Torre (Celta Vigo/ESP; 20/0), Weston McKennie (Juventus/ITA; 51/11), Yunus Musah (AC Milan; ITA; 35/0), Gio Reyna (Nottingham Forest/ENG; 26/8), Malik Tillman (PSV Eindhoven/NED; 10/0), Timmy Tillman (LAFC; 1/0)

 344.
FORWARDS (6): Brenden Aaronson (Union Berlin/GER; 40/8), Folarin Balogun (Monaco/FRA; 10/3), Ricardo Pepi (PSV Eindhoven/NED; 23/10), Christian Pulisic (AC Milan/ITA; 66/28), Tim Weah (Juventus/ITA; 37/5), Haji Wright (Coventry City/ENG; 9/4)

 345.
With those players available, here’s the lineup readers selected. There were four changes from the starting lineup against Colombia, with Ethan Horvath replacing Matt Turner in goal, Miles Robinson supplanting Tim Ream on the back line, Tyler Adams over Johnny Cardoso in midfield, and Haji Wright ahead of Folarin Balogun as the number 9 up top.

 346.
The second-most popular lineup sees Balogun swap in for Haji Wright. Voting was very close between them (48.2% to 45.1%)

 347.

 348.
 349.

 350.
Now let’s look at the polling trends over time. The most noticeable shift came in goal, with Matt Turner seeing a massive dropoff, with fans in favor of Ethan Horvath coming in as replacement.

 351.

 352.
 353.

 354.
Antonee Robinson and Chris Richards continue as the defensive stalwarts, with Joe Scally seeing a nice 15% bump after some good defending against Luis Duiz and Colombia. Cameron Carter-Vickers sees a massive dropoff, and Tim Ream a small one, with Miles Robinson rising up the defensive charts.

 355.

 356.
 357.

 358.
Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams see dropoffs in midfield, but with Adams it’s more of an injury concern, with Gregg Berhalter saying earlier this week that Adams is only likely fit to play 45 minutes. Johnny Cardoso gets a 10-point bump, probably connected with Adams’ fitness issues, while Folarin Balogun drops to 45% with Haji Wright overtaking him and Ricardo Pepi still chasing.

 359.

 360.
 361.

 362.
With significant discussion of Gregg Berhalter’s role as manager in recent days, I added a manager option to the poll at the last minute. 136 of the 703 voters made selections there. Moving forward, the manager may or may not be included - let us know your thoughts!

 363.

 364.
 365.

 366.
What do you all think? How can we keep improving this format in the future?

 367.
What do you think of the results? What lineup do you think we’ll see tonight? Which players are you excited about? Hit the comments to discuss.
