43.

The United Kingdom has secured a groundbreaking trade agreement with the United States, marking the nation’s second major trade milestone in just a week, following a similar deal with India. This landmark agreement eliminates tariffs on UK steel and aluminium exports to the US and significantly reduces automotive tariffs from 27.5% to 10%. These changes are expected to protect thousands of jobs in key sectors like steel and automotive manufacturing.

 44.
The agreement also provides British farmers with enhanced access to the US market, allowing a quota of 13,000 metric tonnes of beef without compromising UK food standards. Additionally, tariffs on ethanol, widely used in UK manufacturing, will drop to zero.

 45.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer hailed the deal as a demonstration of the UK’s commitment to supporting domestic industries and strengthening international ties. Jaguar Land Rover CEO Adrian Mardell praised the agreement for providing stability to the UK automotive sector, which supports 250,000 jobs.

 46.
Beyond immediate tariff reductions, the deal includes provisions for future collaboration in advanced technology, including biotech, life sciences, quantum computing, and aerospace. Both nations will also work on a digital trade agreement to streamline business operations.

 47.
UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasized that this deal is just the beginning, with further negotiations planned to deepen economic ties with the US.

 83.

German renewable energy giant RWE has announced it is halting its offshore wind activities in the United States due to ongoing political developments, following similar moves by TotalEnergies, Shell, BP, and Equinor. This decision comes after challenges faced by the sector under the Trump administration, including suspensions of permits for offshore projects.

 84.
RWE’s CEO, Dr. Markus Krebber, will deliver a speech during the company’s annual meeting on April 30, where he will discuss the company’s progress in 2024, including the development of major wind farms in the UK and Denmark. He will emphasize RWE’s offshore wind capacity of 3.3 GW and the four ongoing projects with 4.4 GW capacity. However, Krebber will also announce that RWE has ceased its offshore activities in the U.S. for now and will set higher requirements for future investments in the country due to the political climate.

 85.
RWE had made significant moves in the U.S. offshore wind sector, becoming the largest leaseholder in the New York Bight with a 3 GW lease area, and winning another lease for a 1.6 GW floating wind farm off Northern California. It also launched investigations for regional projects in Greater New Orleans and proposed a 1.3 GW Community Wind project in New York. Despite these ventures, Krebber will state that RWE remains cautious about the U.S. market, particularly offshore wind, citing the political instability and regulatory challenges that have emerged.

 86.
In addition to halting offshore projects, RWE will introduce stricter criteria for future U.S. investments, raising the expected return from 8% to over 8.5% for new projects. They will only proceed if critical conditions are met, including obtaining all necessary federal permits, ensuring tax credits are safe, and mitigating tariff risks. These more stringent requirements will primarily apply to onshore wind and solar projects, where the company has had more success.

 87.
RWE’s cautious stance follows similar actions from other companies in the offshore wind sector. Shell has taken a $1 billion charge as it pulls back from U.S. offshore wind projects, and Equinor is facing the risk of having to repay $1.5 billion in financing if its Empire Wind project is canceled. The U.S. offshore wind industry remains under pressure due to regulatory delays and the shifting political landscape, leading to growing uncertainty for developers in the sector.

 103.

T-Mobile (TMUS.O) faced a slower-than-expected subscriber growth in the first quarter of 2025, adding 495,000 new monthly bill-paying customers, which fell short of the 506,400 expected by analysts, according to FactSet. While T-Mobile still managed to outperform its competitors, including AT&T (T.N), which added fewer subscribers, and Verizon (VZ.N), which lost customers during the same period, the company’s performance highlighted the growing competition in the increasingly saturated U.S. telecom market.

 104.
The first quarter results showed a more than 5% drop in T-Mobile’s stock price after hours, reflecting investor concerns about the company’s ability to continue growing in a challenging market. As the U.S. telecom industry faces fierce price competition, operators have been leaning heavily on promotional offers, price locks, and bundled deals to retain and attract customers. T-Mobile, known for its aggressive customer acquisition strategies, has had to respond by increasing its efforts to protect market share, especially as its rivals ramp up their own marketing efforts.

 105.
In response to these challenges, T-Mobile’s prepaid unit recently launched four new plans that offer a five-year price guarantee with monthly charges as low as $25 per line. These plans are designed to help the company remain competitive amid increased price sensitivity among consumers. Additionally, T-Mobile has plans to launch its innovative satellite-to-cell service powered by SpaceX’s Starlink in July 2025, with an introductory price of $10 per month for the service, which will be maintained for at least a year. This move is part of T-Mobile’s broader strategy to differentiate itself from competitors by introducing cutting-edge technology.

 106.
Despite these challenges, T-Mobile’s overall revenue showed growth, rising 6.6% to $20.89 billion, surpassing analysts’ expectations of $20.62 billion. T-Mobile’s CEO, Mike Sievert, mentioned during a call with analysts that the company has not yet observed any material impact from the tariffs on mobile handsets, although he acknowledged that if the tariffs lead to higher prices for devices, it could slow down upgrade rates.

 107.
T-Mobile also raised its 2025 adjusted EBITDA forecast, now projecting a range between $33.2 billion and $33.7 billion, up from its previous range of $33.1 billion to $33.6 billion. This reflects the company’s cautious approach amid a shrinking pool of potential customers in the U.S. telecom market. Analyst Jonathan Chaplin from New Street Research noted that T-Mobile’s conservative guidance for EBITDA indicates its preparations to invest more in customer acquisition and retention efforts.

 108.
While T-Mobile’s Q1 performance raised some concerns about its ability to drive strong subscriber growth, its solid revenue growth, new prepaid offers, and plans for Starlink-backed satellite services indicate that the company is working to maintain its position in the increasingly competitive telecom space. However, analysts continue to emphasize the importance of adapting to ongoing market conditions and managing costs efficiently in order to sustain its market leadership.

 144.

Citi executives have praised the wealth division for making “excellent progress” under Andy Sieg, the head of wealth, following a 489% surge in new investment assets in Q4 2024. The division reported $16.5 billion in net new investment assets, contributing to a 24% increase in revenue, reaching $2.1 billion (excluding interest expenses).

 145.
The net new investment assets metric, introduced in Q4 2024, measures wealth managers’ performance independent of market fluctuations and includes dividends and interest payments, but excludes market gains, fees, and commissions. This measure reflects Citi’s strategy to accelerate growth in Client Investment Assets and related revenue.

 146.
Citi’s wealth division saw an organic growth rate of 11% over the last 12 months, calculated by summing net new investment assets from Q2 2024 to Q1 2025 and dividing by client investment assets from Q1 2024.

 147.
CEO Jane Fraser highlighted the division’s enhanced investment capabilities, attributing part of this to improved client experiences and technology investments. Last year, Fraser acknowledged Citi’s “decades of underinvestment” in infrastructure. Andy Sieg also noted that technology had been a “limiting factor,” but recent investments in data and cloud architecture have given the firm a competitive advantage, with progress expected in months, not years.

 148.
However, despite improvements in technology, the wealth division’s technology expenses remained lower in Q1, but the increase in revenue-related costs and severance offerings led to a 5% rise in total operating expenses, reaching $1.64 billion.

 149.
Citi is off to a strong start in 2025, reporting $2.1 billion in Q1 revenue, yielding $284 million in net income, up 62% from the previous year. Citigold, targeting clients with $200,000 or more in assets, contributed significantly to the firm’s revenue growth, posting a 24% increase to $1.16 billion. The private bank saw a 16% year-over-year revenue growth to $664 million, and the Wealth at Work unit, serving law firms and professionals, delivered a 48% revenue jump to $268 million.

 150.
The firm’s wealth units generated $646 million in commissions and other fees, up 14% year-over-year, and nearly $1.3 billion in net interest income, marking a 30% increase from the previous year. Fraser emphasized that Citi’s global wealth management capabilities have made it a preferred choice for clients seeking advice, and the firm is capitalizing on this strength as its strategy continues to prove successful.

 166.

Valley Bank (NASDAQ: VLY) has unveiled its fourth annual report, The Present and Future of Proptech, offering an insightful analysis of the Proptech industry and its projections for 2025. In collaboration with Nine Four Ventures, MetaProp, and PitchBook, the report provides a comprehensive outlook, shedding light on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Despite the economic difficulties of recent years, the report reveals a renewed sense of cautious optimism within the industry, with global real estate investment expected to reach $952 billion by 2025, signaling a recovery from the lows observed in previous years.

 167.
A key takeaway from the report is that private capital investments in the Proptech sector have slowed. However, there are still promising pockets of opportunity, especially in AI-driven applications and sustainability solutions. The report also highlights a shift in investment patterns, with a notable preference for later-stage companies that show high-quality prospects. This reflects a more mature sector, where strategic capital deployment is essential for driving sustainable innovation.

 168.
Ira Robbins, CEO of Valley Bank, stresses the importance of understanding these evolving market dynamics to foster long-term growth. He commented, “Leveraging AI and advanced data analytics will be crucial for enhancing mortgage lending and real estate decisions in the future.” This sentiment is echoed by Zak Schwarzman, General Partner at MetaProp, who highlighted the growing interest in high-quality, later-stage ventures. He noted, “Investment strategies are becoming more focused, with strategic capital being directed towards companies that offer strong, sustainable solutions.”

 169.
The role of technology, especially AI and sustainability, is gaining increasing prominence in the Proptech sector. According to Kurt Ramirez, General Partner at Nine Four Ventures, companies prioritizing these innovations will be well-positioned for the next phase of the industry’s growth. The report highlights that AI is being used to improve operational efficiency, while sustainability measures are helping businesses navigate rising costs and regulatory pressures.

 170.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding economic growth, some sectors within Proptech continue to show resilience. Notably, suburban real estate and industrial leasing are proving to be more robust than other areas. 209.

Many new satellites in Earth’s orbit are equipped with advanced tools to enhance global food security and strengthen agrifood systems. A new report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) explores how space technology intersects with agriculture, forestry, land-use management, climate monitoring, and environmental trends.

 210.
“Space technology has emerged as a game changer. Satellite imagery, global navigation satellite systems data, and their integrated applications are now critical tools for agriculture,” state Lifeng LI, Director of FAO’s Land and Water Division, and UNOOSA Director Aarti Holla-Maini in their introduction to “Leverage Space Technology for Agricultural Development and Food Security.”

 211.
The use of geospatial technologies dates back to 1957. Since then, over 17,000 satellites have been launched, with nearly 3,000 added annually. Advances in satellite precision, coupled with cloud-based applications, have made detailed Earth data more accessible, even to farmers via smartphones.

 212.
The report highlights the need to bridge the gap between space and agriculture, addressing technical interoperability, data harmonization, and capacity development. It stresses international collaboration to ensure small-scale farmers and developing countries benefit from satellite data.

 213.
Key recommendations include:

 214.

 215.
Strengthening global capacities for using satellite data in agriculture.

 216.
Increasing international coordination on agriculture-focused satellite missions.

 217.
Enhancing accessibility and interoperability between space data and services.

 218.
Establishing a centralized UN imagery procurement hub to reduce duplication and improve synergies.

 219.

 220.
The report also emphasizes the importance of mitigating space debris risks that could threaten satellite operations and future missions.

 221.
FAO’s Geospatial Contributions

 222.
FAO has developed several innovative tools leveraging satellite technology:

 223.

 224.
Hand-in-Hand Geospatial Platform: Integrates over two million layers of open-access geospatial and agricultural statistics data.

 225.
SEPAL: A forest cover monitoring tool that detects landscape changes in real-time using Google Earth Engine and satellite services from FAO member countries.

 226.
WaPOR: Tracks actual water consumption in crop fields with high precision, helping farmers optimize resource use.

 227.

 228.
These tools directly support farmers by aiding emergency response efforts, pest control, soil fertility management, water stress assessments, and precision agriculture.

 229.
Multistakeholder Partnerships

 230.
The report underscores the need for partnerships to maximize space technology’s potential in agriculture. It highlights FAO’s Agro-Informatics initiatives, such as a rapid crop-mapping effort in Togo during the COVID-19 pandemic, which involved NASA Harvest, Planet Labs, and the University of Maryland. This initiative enabled swift government interventions to stabilize agrifood systems.

 231.
Addressing the space-agriculture value chain, the report advocates for ensuring developing countries have access to spatial infrastructure, standardizing data collection and methodologies, and preventing gaps in remote-sensing data coverage.

 232.
UNOOSA supports UN Member States in establishing legal and regulatory frameworks for space activities, while FAO collaborates with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to develop a standardized meta-language for land cover and land use. These efforts aim to enhance data harmonization, integration, and interoperability, enabling widespread benefits through cloud computing platforms like SEPAL and farmer-driven field observations for improved policymaking.

 233.
By fostering international collaboration and technological innovation, space technology can revolutionize agriculture, ensuring global food security and sustainable agrifood systems for the future.

 249.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is partnering with the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) to enhance environmental restoration efforts in Ogoni land.

 250.
During an inspection visit to HYPREP’s remediation site in K-Dere and the Mangroves Restoration Project in Bomu, both in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Dr. Henry Okokon, Director of NDDC’s Environmental Protection and Control Directorate, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to addressing environmental degradation in the region.

 251.
He stated, “Ogoni is an integral part of the Niger Delta, and we cannot allow the degradation of the environment to continue. We must be actively involved in soil and groundwater remediation efforts, particularly in K-Dere, where contamination levels are high. Our goal is also to ensure the restoration of the mangrove ecosystem in Bomu and beyond.”

 252.
Dr. Okokon expressed satisfaction with the progress made, stating, “There have been concerns about the effectiveness of HYPREP’s work, but what we have seen today is impressive. This collaboration will further strengthen environmental restoration efforts in the Niger Delta and improve livelihoods for communities affected by oil pollution.”

 253.
Prof. Godwin Igile, Project Consultant, reported that over 50% of the remediation work at the Boobanabe K-Dere site has been completed, marking significant progress in the clean-up efforts.

 254.
HYPREP’s Director of Technical Services, Engr. Paul Aguiyi, highlighted the scale of the mangrove restoration project, describing it as “the largest revegetation exercise in the world.” He explained that while HYPREP’s mandate focuses on Ogoni land, NDDC’s broader mandate encompasses the entire Niger Delta, making their collaboration vital for expanding restoration efforts across the region.

 255.
“Four to five states in the Niger Delta have mangroves severely degraded due to oil exploration. By partnering with NDDC, we can replicate these restoration efforts beyond Ogoni land and create a healthier ecosystem for the entire region,” Aguiyi noted.

 256.
He also acknowledged NDDC’s previous financial support for HYPREP’s activities and reaffirmed their ongoing partnership.

 257.
“There has always been a strong communication channel between HYPREP and NDDC. This visit allows the Commission to see firsthand the progress in Ogoni land and explore how these efforts can be scaled up across the Niger Delta. The goal is not just to benefit HYPREP or Ogoni land but to restore the entire region’s ecosystem,” he added.

 258.
According to Aguiyi, the impact of these remediation efforts is already evident, as local fisherfolk have resumed their trade, benefiting from the revived ecosystem. Over 1.2 million mangroves have been planted so far, with expectations that within the next five years, the full impact of these restoration projects will be fully realized.
