If the Bills hope to continue their dominant ways, these players will be integral to success.

Every offseason, a group of Buffalo Bills content creators come together to work on a project about the franchise. The focus centers on the “10 most important Buffalo Bills” as it relates to the future of the club.

It’s always a pleasure to work on this project, as Joe Marino (no relation) from Locked On Bills brings the group together to share our rankings. Our respective picks are then tabulated, which are then released by Marino through two shows that featured the average of our collective rankings.

I’ll have a separate article that features the finished product of our work, but in the meantime here are my top 10 picks for the Bills.

10. RB James Cook

Despite some of the uncertainty around Cook’s contract, he deserves a spot on this list. Cook has been the most effective offensive weapon for the Bills (outside of Josh Allen), and is still just 25 years old. I may be in the minority, but I expect general manager Brandon Beane to get a new contract done with Cook before Week 1 of the 2025 season.

9. WR Keon Coleman

When Buffalo chose not to make a significant investment at receiver in the draft, it appeared to be a vote of confidence in Keon Coleman. You can include me as a member of Bills Mafia who expects Coleman to take a step forward this season, adding a level of consistency to his game that he flashed prior to injury as a rookie.

8. TE Dalton Kincaid

Last year I had Dalton Kincaid in the number-two spot, expecting a huge breakout following the departure of wide receiver Stefon Diggs. It was a bit of a sophomore slump for Kincaid, thanks to some noted chemistry issues with Josh Allen last season. Assuming that this is something Joe Brady can work on with both Kincaid and Allen, I expect a nice bounce-back season for the former first rounder.

7. LB Terrell Bernard

With Matt Milano having battled injuries over the past two seasons, we’ve seen Terrell Bernard blossom into the leader of the Bills’ defense. The only captain on the defensive side of the ball in 2024, Bernard has established himself as a playmaker for Buffalo since becoming a full-time starter. Bernard now has a new contract extension, keeping him with the Bills for the next five seasons.

6. WR Khalil Shakir

Khalil Shakir continues his ascension for Buffalo’s offense, catching 76 passes for 821 yards in 2024. While the statistics are nice, it was clear that Shakir established himself as the most-effective passing option for the Bills last season. This was evident in the two games that Shakir missed (Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans), where Buffalo’s offense looked abysmal. Shakir also signed a four-year contract extension — keeping him in Buffalo for the foreseeable future.

5. DE Greg Rousseau

Greg Rousseau also received a well-deserved contract extension this offseason, locking up the talented defensive end for the next five seasons. Like most of the players on this list, Rousseau’s best football is likely ahead of him. The addition of Nick Bosa should pull some of the attention away from Rousseau, which could lead to him reaching double-digit sack numbers in 2025.

4. CB Christian Benford

While expectation may be high for rookie cornerback Max Hairston, there will be some added pressure on Benford playing on the opposite side. Benford has established himself as the Bills’ top cornerback over the past two seasons, and was rewarded with a four-year contract extension this offseason. The departure of Rasul Douglas will likely amplify Benford’s importance to the defense, making him an easy choice for this top-four selection.

3. RT Spencer Brown

Brandon Beane looks like a genius for extending Brown prior to the 2024 season. The former third-round pick played at a Pro Bowl level last season, missing just one game with an injury. Brown is still just 27 years old, and has solidified the right tackle position for the Bills. He should continue to shine this season, with all five starters returning along the offensive line.

2. LT Dion Dawkins

While it may not be popular to include a 31-year old offensive tackle this high on my list, I cannot look past the fact that Dawkins has three years left on his contract with the Bills. He had his best professional season in 2024, and has shown no signs of slowing down at this stage of his career. Dawkins is the most critical player along Buffalo’s offensive line, and his performance will be crucial to the offense’s success in future years.

1. QB Josh Allen

This should come to no surprise to Bills fans that Allen is once again in my top spot. The Buffalo Bills go as Allen does, with the 2024 NFL MVP playing at the top of his game.

As mentioned earlier, the consensus top 10 has been announced on Locked On Bills (which you can see in three embedded videos below). I’ll have a follow-up article breaking down those picks in the coming days. Let me know what you think of my selections in the comments section below.

Chime in: Which Buffalo Bills would be awesome at Olympics flag football?

Tell us what you think in the comments.

NFL owners voted this week to allow a limited number of NFL players to participate in flag football at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. I was already excited to see flag football in the biggest games on the planet, so adding the prospect of NFL players to the mix makes it even more fun.

The resolution also needs to be approved by the NFLPA, the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), and “the relevant Olympic authorities to implement rules governing the participation of NFL players in flag football”.

Each participating nation may select one player per NFL team plus any player in the International Pathway Program is eligible on top of the one player. So Josh Allen and James Cook can’t both be on the United States team, as an example, since only one player per team is allowed. With only six teams participating on the men’s side, the most players an NFL team could send will be seven (six players plus the International Pathway Program).

That’s not to say that every spot on the field will be taken by NFL players, Minnesota Vikings linebacker Brian Asamoah told the BBC.

“You can’t just count out the guys that play flag football. I think that’s the tricky thing right there. Just because you’re good at American football doesn’t mean you’re good at flag football, so you have to share that respect.”

Now that we have the news out of the way, let’s speculate about current and former Buffalo Bills that would have been great flag football players or could be for the future.

QB Josh Allen

Allen obviously has a rocket arm and a competitive spirit. Would love to see him chucking to Justin Jefferson.

RB James Cook

Cook is shifty and can catch the ball after making the snap. I’d rather have him that a bigger back like Derrick Henry in this sport.

TE Dalton Kincaid

I think Kincaid has a pretty good shot of playing for the Canadians should they qualify. His mother was born in Canada and he has Canadian citizenship.

WR Khalil Shakir

This is a long shot, but he’s so quick on his feet with great balance. You could do a lot worse than Shakir.

WR Stefon Diggs

Former Bills WR Stefon Diggs has played in the Pro Bowl games at receiver and would have been a natural selection a few years ago. Maybe not anymore after his leg injury and Father Time catching up with him.

WR Lee Evans

underrated due to lackluster QB play during his career, Lee Evans would be deadly on a flag football field.

RB Thurman Thomas

If I am pulling one player off the Bills’ Super Bowl teams, it’s Thurman. The dude was great catching the ball out of the backfield and elusive as heck.

WR James Lofton

With great hands and long speed, I’d go with Lofton over Andre Reed if I am choosing an 80s/90s receiver. Reed’s signature was his toughness over the middle but that’s not really a concern here. Even Don Beebe in this spot as a burner would be cool.

WR Elbert Dubenion

Dubenion’s nickname was “Golden Wheels” because he could fly. Sign me up for a young speedster like Dubenion.

Who ya got, Bills fans? What current or former Bills would you want on your flag football team?

What will Bills rookie DE Landon Jackson bring to Buffalo’s defense in 2025?

Described by many analysts as the most Bills-ready player in the 2025 NFL Draft, what does Jackson bring to a defense?

During the lead-up to the 2025 NFL draft, defensive end was a position of need many analysts saw for the Buffalo Bills. One Bills Drive responded (eventually), selecting defensive end Landon Jackson during Round 3 of April’s draft.

The former Razorback has the physical traits Buffalo tends to look for in EDGE players — a rookie who stands at 6’6” and weighs 264 pounds. He’s a massive prospect with 33 1/4” arms and 10” hands, and reveals himself as someone in the mold of defensive end Greg Rousseau.

In college, Jackson totaled 13 sacks the last two seasons against SEC competition. Let’s see what the film says about his game.

Play 1: Landon Jackson wins on the inside

Pre-snap Jackson lined up on the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle. Once the play was rolling, Jackson shifted inside, winning the initial hand fight. Jackson then ripped through the tackle, finishing the play with a hit on the quarterback.

Play 2: Landon Jackson brings speed off the edge

Here we see Jackson’s speed off the edge of the defensive line. Before the play starts Jackson is centered over the offensive tackle. At the snap he went outside and ripped through the tackle. Jackson then beat the tackle to the point where there were a few feet of space between them.

Play 3: Landon Jackson displays good bend around the edge

One of the most important aspects to an NFL pass rusher’s game is the ability to bend around the edge of the offensive line. It’s key to helping defenders get around long-armed offense tackles in an effort to sack the quarterback.

Here above, the play began with Jackson dipping his shoulder. He then bent around the edge and worked around the tackle for the sack.

The Fast Lane

Landon Jackson has plenty of enticing skills that could allow the Bills to develop him into a more complete, pure pass rusher. He has the ability to win both outside and inside against bigger offensive linemen. Jackson’s also flexible and shows good bend when getting around offensive tackles.

What do you notice in Jackson’s game, and how do you see him fitting in with the Bills’ heavy rotation at defensive end? Will he find his way to several sacks as a rookie in 2025, or is he destined to thrive as a run defender?

Will Buffalo Bills rookie CB Dorian Strong replicate Christian Benford’s success?

Early accolades have the late-round rookie in the spotlight very early during his NFL career.

Buffalo Bills rookie cornerback Dorian Strong, a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech, has the potential to follow in the footsteps of the team’s previous late-round defensive gems. Christian Benford (Round 6), Dane Jackson (Round 7), and Levi Wallace (UDFA) have each thrived in Buffalo’s defensive system, becoming key contributors despite their modest draft pedigrees.

Strong’s schematic fit, parallels to his predecessors, and impressive start at 2025 Bills rookie minicamp position him as a candidate to replicate their success. He’s a young man with good size and great collegiate production who’s already impressed, showing potential as a great fit for what the Bills’ defense likes to do.

Strong finds himself contributing heavily, perhaps way earlier than expected, even beating first-round cornerback Maxwell Hairston in the process. We’ve seen it already, and it could happen again. Can Strong emerge as the next Christian Benford, though?

Dorian Strong’s college production: A true football player

Dorian Strong’s college career at Virginia Tech provides a compelling case for his potential. Over the course of 53 games, he recorded 110 tackles, seven interceptions, and 27 pass deflections — a testament to his consistent play-making ability despite being heavily avoided by opposing quarterbacks. Strong’s 2023 and 2024 seasons, where he started all 25 games, showcased durability and growth after a 2022 injury.

His interception total and pass deflections highlight his ball skills, while his tackle numbers reflect a willingness to engage in run support — a critical trait for Bills cornerbacks under head coach Sean McDermott.

Comparatively, Christian Benford’s college stats at Villanova included 137 tackles, 14 interceptions, and 47 pass deflections over 36 games. While Benford’s per-game production was slightly higher, Strong’s numbers are impressive for a player who faced ACC competition, often against stronger passing attacks than Benford saw in the FCS-level Colonial Athletic Association.

Dane Jackson (Pittsburgh) and Levi Wallace (Alabama) also posted solid-but-not-spectacular college stats, with Jackson recording 147 tackles and four interceptions over 47 games and Wallace totaling 94 tackles and five interceptions over 39 games. Like Strong, all three relied on instincts and technique rather than elite athleticism — a trait that translates well to Buffalo’s scheme.

Strong’s college tape reveals a quick, instinctive player with a competitive edge, though he lacks ideal foot speed or twitch. This mirrors Benford, who was lauded for his high football IQ and zone-coverage proficiency despite modest athletic measurables. Strong’s ability to read quarterbacks and break on passes aligns with the skills that allowed Benford, Jackson, and Wallace to exceed expectations as late-round picks.

Dorian Strong’s fit with Bills’ system: A zone-coverage match

Buffalo’s defensive system, McDermott’s zone-heavy scheme, emphasizes discipline, awareness, and tackling — qualities where Strong excels. Buffalo typically deploys a Cover 3 or Cover 4 base, requiring cornerbacks to maintain leverage, read routes, and limit yards after the catch.

Strong’s experience playing various coverages at Virginia Tech, as he noted in post-draft media sessions, has prepared him for this role. His instincts and ability to close on passes make him an ideal fit as a boundary corner in Buffalo’s scheme, where he can rely on positioning rather than elite speed.

Christian Benford has thrived in this system, earning an eighth-place ranking among cornerbacks by Pro Football Focus in 2023 with 51 tackles, 10 passes defensed, and two interceptions. His ability to play mistake-free football and tackle effectively (missing only one tackle in 2023) set a blueprint for Strong.

Similarly, Dane Jackson and Levi Wallace succeeded as zone corners who avoided costly errors and contributed on special teams. Strong’s special-teams experience across all five college seasons enhances his roster odds, as McDermott values versatility in depth players.

Replicating late-round success: A Bills tradition

The Bills have a proven track record of turning late-round or undrafted cornerbacks into contributors, making Strong’s situation ideal. Levi Wallace, an undrafted free agent in 2018, became a starter by his second season, leveraging his zone awareness and tackling to overcome modest athleticism.

Dane Jackson, a seventh-round pick in 2020, started opposite White in 2022 and, after an unsuccessful one-year stint with the Carolina Panthers, is back with the team as a reliable depth piece. Christian Benford, a sixth-rounder in 2022, outplayed first-round pick Kaiir Elam to secure a starting role as a rookie — and recently signed a four-year, $76 million extension in 2025.

These players share common traits: solid but not elite college production, strong instincts, and a knack for fitting Buffalo’s system. Strong’s profile aligns closely, particularly with Benford, as both are taller (Strong at 6’0”, Benford at 6’1”), leaner cornerbacks who excel in zone coverage and tackling. It’s easy to see this similarity on the tape, where Strong’s confidence and technique are noticeable.

In Buffalo, he will have opportunities to challenge Hairston from the get-go, with McDermott always making players “earn” their playing time. The Bills’ history of giving late-round rookies the same opportunities as their first- and second-round picks, combined with Strong’s tools, positions him to battle for playing time early.

Moreover, Buffalo’s coaching staff, led by McDermott and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich, excels at maximizing late-round talent. Their emphasis on fundamentals and film study helped Benford, Jackson, and Wallace overcome draft status limitations.

Strong, a quick and instinctive player, is poised to benefit from this coaching, potentially fighting for playing time early, if not as the starter opposite Benford (look out, Mad Max), as a depth piece with White and Jackson.

Bills 2025 rookie minicamp: A promising start for Dorian Strong

Strong’s performance at rookie minicamp provided early evidence of his potential. Observers noted his “easy-to-see athleticism” and taller frame, which stood out despite his lean build.

First-round pick Maxwell Hairston singled out Strong as a standout, a significant endorsement given Hairston’s own pedigree. Media reports highlighted Strong’s fluid movement and competitiveness, suggesting he could contribute early as a depth piece and special-teams option.

Maxwell Hairston and Dorian Strong became close while training together in Phoenix. Now they're teammates in Buffalo.

I asked Strong how he handles competing with a friend.

"You can't be an A-Hole...

This mirrors Benford’s rookie minicamp in 2022, where he began turning heads with his polish and awareness, eventually earning a starting role over Elam. Jackson and Wallace also used rookie minicamp to showcase their readiness, setting the stage for roster spots.

Strong’s early impression, coupled with his special-teams background, aligns with Buffalo’s valuation of versatile depth players. He already signed his four-year rookie contract and seems ready to compete.

Challenges and final thoughts

While Dorian Strong’s outlook is promising, challenges remain. His lean frame may require added strength to handle NFL physicality. Additionally, his lack of elite speed could limit any upside against faster receivers, and we saw last season that McDermott and Babich have been more willing to play man coverage more often than in the past.

Also, competing against established veterans and a first-round pick like Hairston won’t be easy. But the Bills’ depth at cornerback allows Strong to develop gradually, much like some of his predecessors.

Buffalo Bills DB Dorian Strong (@Dstrong_25) is wearing number 43.

Given Strong’s college production, fit in Buffalo’s scheme, alignment with the Bills’ history of late-round cornerback success, and strong rookie minicamp performance, it positions him to emulate Christian Benford, Jackson, and Wallace. Like them, the former Hokie brings instincts, tackling, and special-teams value, making him a high-upside depth piece with starter potential.

His chance of becoming the new Benford doesn’t mean Hairston has to be the new Elam, though. This, plus vets like White and Jackson looking for redemption back where they were successful in the past, could clog the path for Strong early in his career.

Regardless, the opportunities will be there. If he capitalizes on Buffalo’s coaching and development pipeline, Strong could become the next late-round steal for the Bills.

The Bills were cookin’ in South Beach!

The Buffalo Bills’ 2024 season has been written. So let’s add some “illustrations!” If you’re new to Plays That Defined, this isn’t a highlight recap, but rather a cathartic retelling of the past season, chapter by chapter.

Don’t vote for your favorite play necessarily, vote for the one that best represents that game’s narrative. I’ll recap the game to refresh your memory, but don’t feel locked in by my narrative.

Chapter 2: Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins

The Bills had squeaked out a victory over the Arizona Cardinals to kick off the season and were now tasked with heading to Florida to take on the Miami Dolphins. With both teams winning in Week 1, the showdown looked to set the tone for the AFC East.

The Dolphins’ offense struggled to finish, turning the ball over three times. As a result, it wasn’t a big stats day for the Bills’ offense as they were able to sit back and pick up the pieces.

James Cook’s receiving TD (Q1; 9:55)

After Miami’s first drive ended with an interception by defensive back Ja’Marcus Ingram, Buffalo looked to take an early lead. Already in field goal range and facing fourth down, head coach Sean McDermott elected to roll the dice.

The Dolphins tried to bring the heat, but Josh Allen and the offense were well prepared with a blitz beater. James Cook got the easy catch and had room to bring it 17 yards to the house.

Christian Benford’s interception (Q1; 0:47)

Miami was able to pull even with a score of their own and followed that up by stopping Buffalo’s offense with a three and out. The Dolphins hoped to get something going but an overthrow by Tua Tagovailoa fell into Christian Benford’s waiting hands.

Ed Oliver’s Sack (Q2; 3:50)

The Bills’ defense didn’t always put together complete games in 2024. In Week 2, the defense shined though, shutting down the Dolphins one way or another on eight of 10 drives. Like Buffalo before them, Miami gambled on fourth down. The Bills’ pressure worked though, with Ed Oliver ending the drive with flair.

Stopped at midfield shortly before the half, the Dolphins’ gamble on the previous play set the Bills up with a chance to score again before the break. Buffalo had nearly four minutes of clock, but James Cook felt only one play was needed.

Ja’Marcus Ingram’s pick-six (Q3; 9:37)

Down by two scores with plenty of time in the half, the Dolphins had a real chance at a come back. Once again the pressure got to Tagovailoa who lobbed a pass awkwardly upfield. Ja’Marcus Ingram had his second interception of the day and the first touchdown of his career.

Bills, Bears to hold joint practices during 2025 NFL preseason

Tremaine Edmunds and the Bears will welcome old friends to town in August.

The Buffalo Bills are expected to travel to the Windy City for a series of joint practices with the Chicago Bears ahead of their preseason game later this summer. Brad Biggs, who covers the Bears for The Chicago Tribune, shared the news on the heels of finalized 2025 NFL preseason schedules.

While the details for those practices are yet to be revealed, the Bills are set to face the Bears in Chicago on Sunday, August 17 in a preseason primetime matchup at 8 p.m. EDT. Buffalo won’t see the Bears during the regular season, but they’ve become somewhat familiar camp competition for one another in recent seasons.

The Bills hosted Chicago for the 2024 NFL preseason, which was then-rookie quarterback Caleb Williams’ first snaps against a hostile opponent. Williams drew rave reviews in completing four of seven passes for 95 yards before hitting the bench to watch the rest of a 33-6 blowout win by his teammates.

In 2023, Buffalo was in Chicago to take on quarterback Justin Fields and the Bears — a preseason finale that saw the Bills win 24-21 on the strength of quarterback Kyle Allen’s extended play (18 of 34 for 162 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT).

The last time Buffalo and Chicago faced each other in the regular season came on Christmas Eve during the 2022 campaign. That game was historically cold — a Bills regular-season road game record-cold of 9 degrees Fahrenheit — and featured 30-40 mph wind gusts that left the sun-soaked air a brutal -12 degrees at game time.

Having survived initial troubles against Chicago, Buffalo ended up winning the game easily, 35-13, thanks to a dominant second-half performance where they outscored the Bears 29-3. Quarterback Josh Allen was a dual-threat nightmare for Chicago, complementing a run game that put up a total of 254 yards on the strength of running backs Devin Singletary and James Cook. The win allowed the Bills to capture the AFC East division title a third-consecutive time.
