Who you taking in tonight’s game?

If you feel like we’ve seen a lot of the New York Jets this year, you’d be correct. This will be their sixth national contest tonight (5 prime time, 1 London) when they host the Houston Texans at 7:15 p.m. CT on Amazon Prime. The Jets are just (2-6), but they have the New York market and Aaron Rodgers going for them, so plenty of fans will turn in to see them lose. They desperately need a win if they have any hope of limping into the postseason.

The Texans are (6-2), and while they sit atop the AFC South, they just lost wideout Stefon Diggs to a season-ending ACL injury. They are still without receiver Nico Collins, so C.J. Stroud will need to mix up the target share in the passing game.

Our friends over at FanDuel Sportsbook have the home Jets favored by 1.5 points, with the over/under at 42.5.

New York’s defense has been bad since they fired head coach Robert Salah a few weeks ago, so give me the over in this game. I also like the Jets to hold serve at home behind a big game from running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen. Aaron Rodgers will do enough

Who are you picking in tonight’s game?

Did Caleb Williams’ Father just call out Matt Eberflus?

Carl Williams tweeted out two hashtags that suggest he’s not happy with Matt Eberflus

Caleb Williams’ father may not be happy with how Matt Eberflus handled his postgame press conference as well as his follow-up presser on Monday.

We all know the story, the Chicago Bears lost to the Washington Commanders on a Hail Mary as time expired, but there were some questions as to how Matt Eberflus handled his defense leading up to the final play.

In his two following press conferences, Matt Eberflus didn’t say he made any mistakes, including the second to last play where he did not have his defense cover the sidelines and allowed the Commanders to advance the ball to midfield.

Well, on Thursday afternoon, a Twitter account that is largely believed to belong to Caleb Williams’ father, Carl Williams, sent out a tweet that has the Bears’ community reacting. The tweet was only up for about 20 minutes before it was deleted.

The tweet quoted tweeted this tweet from Washington Commanders beat writer Nicki Jhabvala.

Commanders DC Joe Whitt said he didn't see much of the Hail Mary last Sunday because he was pissed.

"We should close the game, finish the game in those winning moments, and I blame myself. We were in a solid call, but there was a better call that I should've gotten to and I… pic.twitter.com/YAWKij8S2j
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) October 31, 2024

The tweet is Commanders’ DC Joe Whitt discussing that he didn’t really see the Hail Mary because he was upset with how he called his defense on the Bears’ go-ahead drive.

The Carl Williams account quote tweeted it with the following hashtags: #accountablity #realcoach.

It will be curious if this story has any legs. I would expect that if this is confirmed to be Carl Williams’ account, this will be defused quickly by Caleb Williams, his father, and the Chicago Bears.

But it will make every fan wonder if Carl (and more importantly Caleb) are disappointed with how Eberflus responded to this game, especially considering that Caleb Williams said that the game never should have come down to a Hail Mary if he had operated the offense better.

Stay tuned.

UPDATE:

The Score’s Shane Riordan reached out to Carl Williams and confirmed the account was, in fact, Caleb’s father, but he said it had nothing to do with Matt Eberflus.

The tweet has since been deleted, but I talked to Caleb Williams’s dad Carl. He tells me—

“Innocent comment. I like what the Commanders are doing over there.
Join our Bear Bones LIVE at FIVE (CT) to discuss all the latest about the Bears!

The Chicago Bears have been a hot topic nationally for a couple of weeks now, and while it started from a place of excitement and hope for the franchise following the three-game winning streak, the gut punch of a loss last week turned the discourse sour. The Bears need a win on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals to ease some of the drama surrounding the Commander’s fallout.

Bears fandom is restless.

Tracking all the Bears big plays throughout the season

One of the sentiments I saw expressed in many places after the Chicago Bears lost to the Washington Commanders in Week 8 was that “the Bears didn’t deserve to win anyway.” With respect to Toxic Differential Plus, that’s true - but it wasn’t exactly a dominating performance by the Commanders.

The Bears lost the turnover battle 1-0, tied in sack differential with two each, and lost the explosive play differential 6-4. That includes the final Hail Mary play as an explosive, otherwise, the Bears would have overcome a -3 score in the TD+. It would have been somewhat of a minor upset, but not grand larceny.

D’Andre Swift took over the team lead with two explosive plays in this one, putting his season total up to six. Montez Sweat added another sack to his total as he had an impactful revenge game against the Commanders. Otherwise, a fairly quiet Week 8 on big plays.

What was your favorite big play from Week 8?

The Bears enter November on the brink and look to prove they’re going to take the next step.

November brings definitive answers in the NFL. By now, we mostly know who the teams are, who is gearing up for a playoff push, and who is looking at mock drafts.

If the Chicago Bears want to be a team actually inside the “in the hunt” graphics, then they need to play way better than what we saw against Washington last week.

Indeed this is a pivitol game for the Bears. All of the noise, criticism and player quotes that have circulated since last week’s debacle in Washington could derail the season or become a rallying point.

The Cardinals are an up-and-down team that has talent and could give the Bears fits. But we’ve seen what the Bears are capable of when they play well.

Let’s meet the Cardinals.

Arizona Cardinals

SB Nation site: Revenge of the Birds

Game day, time, TV: Sunday, 3:05 p.m. CT, CBS

Historical meetings: In week 13 of the 2003 season the Bears hosted the Cardinals at Soldier Field for the game that I refer to as The Brock Forsey Game.

The Bears picked off Jeff Blake twice (once each for R.W. McQuarters and Jerry Azumah) while Kordell Stewart had a good game (22 for 37 for 284 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a TD.

Brock Forsey, an UDFA from Boise State had to fill in for the Bears’ injured running backs and rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown.

The Bears won 28-3.

Last meeting: Christmas Eve last year, week 16 the Bears took care of the 3-11 Cardinals.

Justin Fields rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown and Khalil Herbert rushed for 112 and a touchdown.

Cole Kmet had 107 yards with a long of 53 yards. Marcedes Lewis caught a one-yard touchdown.

Injury report: The Cardinals had five players on their injury report Wednesday.

Offense: The Cardinals come into the game ranked 18th in points and 12th in yards.

Their passing offense ranks 22nd and their rushing offense ranks seventh.

Cardinals’ quarterback Kyler Murray (67.2 pct cmp./1,638 yds./11 TD/3 INT) is playing solid football.

Murray’s main weapons are TE Tre McBride (42 rec./446 yds./0 TD), Michael Wilson (27/283/3) and rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. (26/411/5) is a touchdown machine.

On the ground, James Conner (129 att./557 yds./4 TD) is running strong. Murray (41/344/2) is the team’s second-leading rusher, followed by Trey Benson (31/117).

Defense: The Cardinals defense comes in ranked 24th in points and 27th in yards.

Their passing and rushing defense rank 26th.

The defense is led by Budda Baker (79 tkl/4 TFL), Kyzir White (62 tkl/4 TFL/1 INT), Jalen Thompson (54 tkls/2 PD/1 FR/1 TFL/2 QB hits), and Sean Murphy-Bunting (24 tkl/1 INT/2 TFL).

Leading their pass rush are OLBs Dennis Gardeck (3 sk/2 PD/6 TFL/4 QB hits), Mack Wilson (47 tkl/2 TFL/1 QB hit/3 PD/1 INT) and Dante Stills (22 tkls/3 sk/1 FF/3 TFL/3 QB hits).

They also have Zaven Collins (31 tkls/1 sk/3 PD/1 INT/5 TFL).

Key matchups: Win in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

The Cardinals have a non-existent pass rush. The Bears have a lot of injuries on their OL to overcome but if they can win at the point of attack, the Bears should be able to get D’Andre Swift going and let Caleb Williams make plays.

On defense, winning up front is all about slowing down James Conner. He’s really the catalyst to what they want to do on offense. If the Bears can get a lead and keep Conner in check, it will make things easier for Chicago’s defense. The secondary will have to slow down Marvin Harrison Jr. and Tre McBride.

Key stats

Arizona is 2-2 at home this year

The Bears are 0-3 on the road this season and haven’t won a Sunday road game under Matt Eberflus

The Cardinals rank last in third-down defense, allowing 52.1 percent of opponents’ third downs

Arizona ranks 29th in pressure percentage at 15.5 percent. They have the second-lowest blitz percentage and rank 26th in sacks with 15

Opponent QBs have a 101.4 rating against the Cardinals

The Cardinals have allowed the second-fewest sacks this year with just 11

Arizona allows the second-most posts per drive and rank last in average opponents’ drive yards, plays and possession

Can the Bears win on the road this week? What’s it going to take to beat the Cardinals?

Open Thread Question of the Day: Will the Bears loss to the Commanders linger moving forward?

How much impact will this loss have on the Bears the rest of the season?

The Chicago Bears' loss to the Washington Commanders was one of the most deflating losses I can remember.

Those are the type of losses that when a positive season turns South, they look at games like that as the reason things went bad because the team never mentally recovered.

That’s not always the case, there are times that a loss like this can give a team a boost where they use it as a rallying cry moving forward.

Will this loss to the Washington Commanders linger for the Chicago Bears moving forward for the rest of the season?

This is a tough question to answer because of course, none of us are in the locker room. The Bears aren’t an experienced team and are just starting to win games. They have a questionable coach who hasn’t exactly handled adversity fantastically in the past. But Ryan Poles has built a strong locker room with a lot of veterans who have been around the block and could certainly help weather this storm.

My answer: I think in other sports, the regular season has such a higher volume of games that a devastating loss can be shaken off much easier. But these types of losses in the NFL can hurt a team’s psyche.

For this particular Bears team, I don’t think this loss is something that’s going to be forcing them into a tailspin a month from now, but I do think it can linger into next week. If this team isn’t focused on going on the road against the Arizona Cardinals because of that rough loss, that’s going to have a massive impact moving forward. If the Bears are 5-4 headed into the back half of the schedule, I don’t think there is any way this team can make the playoffs.

I think if the Bears struggle on the back half of the schedule, I think it will be more because of the difficulty of the schedule and that this Bears’ team wasn’t quite ready for primetime. But I do think this game lingers into next week and impacts the Arizona game which the Bears will lose and drop to 4-4. If that happens, the playoffs will be a very tall order. Linger? No. But massive impact? Absolutely.

The Chicago Bears still have a player mentioned in the latest NFL trade rumors.

Earlier today, ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler shared all the latest buzz surrounding the NFL’s trade deadline (Tuesday, November 5, 3:00 p.m. CT). While there weren’t as many Chicago Bears mentioned as last week’s rumors, two players garnered mentions.

“Chicago’s Nate Davis is available,” Folwer wrote, “And the Bears are prepared to cover some of his $8 million salary to facilitate.”

General manager Ryan Poles would likely love to move Davis, but he may need to wait and see how his offensive line shapes up this week.

The latest injury report from the Bears listed three offensive linemen who were hurt on Sunday in Washington, and a fourth has already been placed on injured reserve. Starting left tackle Braxton Jones and reserve left tackle Kiran Amegadjie were both held out, and starting left guard Teven Jenkins was limited. Reserve guard Bill Murray was put on IR.

The Bears should have Larry Borom active this Sunday, and Ryan Bates could be as well, but if Davis is needed, his playing could serve as a showcase for o-line needy teams around the NFL. Davis has fallen out of favor with Chicago’s coaching staff, and he will only play if desperately needed.

Fowler also mentioned Chicago’s inactive tailback from Sunday.

“The running back trade market just hasn’t picked up the way receiver has. But [Carolina’s Miles] Sanders and Chicago’s Khalil Herbert are high on my list of tradeable RBs.”

With Travis Homer back, the Bears have no intention of playing Herbert, who is in the final year of his contract. I think Herbert is gone if a team offers a day-three pick.
