32.

Chris Panton is a self-proclaimed Google Pixel super fan living in Knoxville, Tennessee. He adores the software, camera, and virtual assistant, even crediting the phone’s car crash detection feature for saving his life during an accident a few years ago.

 33.
“I’ve owned nearly every Pixel device,” said the 33-year-old, who has shared hundreds of YouTube videos about Pixel phones and other tech. “I’ve influenced so many family members to switch to Pixel—my brother and sister-in-law, my mom, and my wife… even a coworker made the switch.”

 34.
However, this year marks the first time he won’t upgrade to Pixel’s latest model, the Pixel Fold, a foldable smartphone priced at $1,799. “I’d love to own it,” he told CNN, “but I simply can’t afford it… that price for a first-generation device is outrageous.”

 35.
Earlier this month, Google unveiled its foldable smartphone, promising customers the features they expect in a phone combined with a tablet-sized display. Panton isn’t alone in feeling sticker shock.

 36.
“My first car cost $1,800,” one Twitter user commented. “Google has completely lost their minds.” Another user mentioned they had been saving for the inevitable high price of the Pixel Fold.

 37.
Panton noted, “You can buy a new Pixel, a Pixel tablet, and a Pixel Watch for less than the price of the Fold, which offers better value with more diverse devices.”

 38.
This pricing issue isn’t exclusive to Google. When Samsung released the Galaxy Z Fold in 2020, it started at $1,999. While the price has decreased somewhat, the latest version still begins at $1,799, the same as the Pixel Fold. Even budget-friendly foldable models retail for over $1,000 in international markets.

 39.
In contrast, the flagship iPhone starts at $799, less than half the price of the Pixel Fold, while nostalgic pre-paid flip phones can cost as little as $20.

 40.

 41.
Such high prices are one reason the foldable market remains limited. Samsung currently leads this category, followed by companies like Motorola, Lenovo, Oppo, and Huawei. According to ABI Research, foldable and flexible displays represented about 0.7% of the smartphone market in 2021 and are expected to reach nearly 2% in 2022.

 42.
Reducing prices could increase market traction, but manufacturers might struggle to achieve that in the near future. The high cost of foldable phones largely stems from their flexible screens, which are more complex and expensive to produce than traditional displays. The Google Pixel Fold, for instance, features a 5.8-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch inner display.

 43.
Additionally, the unique components of foldables contribute to their cost. The Pixel Fold utilizes a custom-built 180-degree hinge, designed to enhance dust resistance and reduce the device’s overall thickness, requiring intricate engineering and costly manufacturing.

 44.
“The primary expenses are due to the high costs of components, particularly the folding displays and hinge technology, which often involves proprietary designs,” explained David McQueen, research director at ABI Research. “Until production volumes increase enough for manufacturers to achieve economies of scale, prices are unlikely to decrease significantly.”

 45.
Foldable smartphones are still emerging, and much of the research, development, and associated costs remain ahead as manufacturers refine their products.

 46.
“Companies frequently aim to recover their investments with higher price tags,” said Nabila Popal, research director at IDC.

 47.

 48.
Currently, foldable phones are a niche product, and manufacturers are setting prices for early adopters to help offset development costs.

 49.
The future of foldables is uncertain. Most apps still aren’t optimized for these devices; Google’s main competitor, Apple, has yet to adopt the technology; and investing in a first-generation device with numerous unknowns poses a risk.

 50.
Foldable phones are also known for their fragility. Early models of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold faced screen issues, and repairs can be expensive.

 51.
Nonetheless, Google’s choice to enter the foldable market may encourage more consumers to take a chance.

 52.
Sean Milfort, a PhD student at Northcentral University, said he pre-ordered the Pixel Fold because he has always wanted a foldable smartphone and wanted to remain within the Pixel brand.

 53.
“I’m a huge fan of the Pixel line and have loved the idea of a foldable,” he stated. “Since it’s coming from Google—the creators of Android—I’m hopeful they will invest in optimizing this larger form factor.”

 54.
However, holdouts like Panton are waiting for potential price drops.

 55.
“I might consider buying one if a trade-in deal becomes available or if it goes on sale,” he said.

 70.

Google’s latest Pixel Tablet combines portability with the functionality of a smart display, making it a versatile addition to any home. Featuring an 11-inch display, it includes a complimentary Charging Speaker Dock for hands-free access when not in use. Powered by the Google Tensor G2 chip, the tablet delivers enhanced performance and speed, along with built-in Chromecast and Google TV for entertainment.

 71.
With a sleek design made from over 30% recycled materials, the Pixel Tablet comes in three attractive colors. Notably, popular apps like Disney+, Spotify, and Minecraft are pre-optimized for this new hardware. I had the opportunity to preview the tablet before its preorder launch on May 10, with general availability starting June 20.

 72.

 73.
### A New Approach to Design

 74.
While Google isn’t completely reinventing the tablet, it’s certainly expanding its functionality. The bright, 16:10, 2560 x 1600 pixel LCD touchscreen is impressive, but the real standout feature is its collaboration with the included Charging Dock. When docked, the Pixel Tablet transforms into a smart display, allowing you to use it in Hub Mode for streaming music and video, displaying photos, controlling smart home devices, making video calls, and interacting with Google Assistant—all while charging. When you’re on the move, it’s easy to grab and take with you.

 75.
The dual-use nature of this device is seamless, offering both portability and the capabilities of a smart display. While it doesn’t replace a dedicated Google Nest Hub, it serves as a great companion for your phone. As someone who appreciates having a smart display in the kitchen for recipes and news while cooking, I can see the value in having an additional speaker and display for the $499 price point.

 76.
Available in three colors—Hazel, Porcelain, and a lovely Rose—the tablet emphasizes the balance between style and functionality.

 77.

 78.
### Enhanced Performance with a Custom Chip

 79.
The Pixel Tablet features Google’s custom Tensor G2 chip, also found in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones. In our previous tests, this chip provided substantial power for multitasking, running multiple apps, and handling demanding games without lag. Although our time with the Pixel Tablet was brief, Google asserts that it offers smoother video streaming, improved video calls with adjustable lighting, enhanced voice typing, and better multitasking capabilities. Users can also enjoy features like Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur to enhance their photography.

 80.
### Entertainment Made Easy

 81.
As a fan of Google TV, I appreciate the integration of Google TV and Chromecast in the Pixel Tablet. This feature allows users to easily discover and watch their favorite shows and movies while receiving personalized recommendations. You can even cast content to your TV, making it a fantastic entertainment hub.

 82.
The 11-inch LCD screen boasts adaptive brightness, 16 million colors, and an anti-smudge coating to minimize fingerprints—an important feature for frequent users. We’ll provide a more detailed assessment once we conduct a full review.

 83.

 84.
### Final Thoughts

 85.
With the Pixel Tablet, Google has created an innovative device that seamlessly transitions from home use to portability. The inclusion of the Charging Dock is a notable bonus, and for those interested in further customization, the optional Pixel Tablet Case features a metal ring stand that allows for adjustable viewing angles without needing to remove the case. Plus, it can be hung on the back of an airplane seat for added convenience.

 86.
While the Pixel Tablet works well with Google products like phones, earbuds, and watches, it also pairs easily with iPhones and other devices. We look forward to thoroughly testing it to see how it compares to our top tablet choices—stay tuned for more updates!

 101.

Over the past two months, Apple, Google, and Samsung have all introduced their latest smartphones and devices, aiming to entice consumers to upgrade before the holiday season. However, this push may contribute to an increasing issue: electronic waste (e-waste).

 102.
The short lifespan of many tech products, coupled with limited repair options for older devices, has led to a significant rise in e-waste over the years. According to United Nations data, the world generated an astonishing 53.6 million metric tons of e-waste in 2019, with only 17.4% of that being recycled.

 103.
This Friday marks International E-Waste Day, a time to reflect on the consequences of electronic waste and to encourage more recycling and repair efforts. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Forum, a Brussels-based nonprofit that has led this initiative since 2018, is focusing this year on addressing the small items of e-waste that many people may inadvertently hoard, such as old cell phones, headphones, remote controls, and computer mice.

 104.
“People often don’t realize that these seemingly insignificant items hold considerable value and collectively contribute to massive volumes of waste,” said Pascal Leroy, the director general of the WEEE Forum.

 105.

 106.
The e-waste crisis extends beyond simply decluttering your junk drawers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that a large portion of e-waste is shipped to developing countries that lack the capacity to reject these imports or safely recycle them. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that children, due to their smaller hands, are often involved in processing large amounts of e-waste in search of valuable materials like copper, silver, and palladium. The WHO estimates that over 18 million children are exposed to negative health effects as they engage in this informal e-waste recycling industry.

 107.
To help alleviate the e-waste burden from your old phones, laptops, and chargers, here are some steps you can take:

 108.
If you live in an area with e-waste disposal services, whether through scheduled pickups or drop-off locations, experts recommend this as one of the easiest ways to clear out old gadgets. Various coalitions have emerged recently to provide consumers with options for responsible device disposal. Groups like e-Stewards and Sustainable Electronics Recycling International offer online tools to locate certified recycling centers.

 109.

 110.
The benefits of recycling e-waste can be significant. According to the EPA, recycling 1 million cell phones can recover 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium.

 111.
However, not all municipalities in the U.S. have e-waste recycling infrastructure. If you can’t find a nearby recycling center, many major retailers—such as Staples and Best Buy—have programs allowing customers to bring in e-waste for recycling. Additionally, many manufacturers, including Apple, offer credits or free recycling in exchange for trading in used devices. Google, for instance, provides a free shipping label for customers to send in old electronics for recycling.

 112.
Environmental advocates stress that the most crucial step in addressing the growing e-waste problem is to use your electronics for as long as possible. Fortunately, this has become increasingly feasible.

 113.
While tech companies have faced criticism for practices designed to encourage upgrades, recent policy changes are aimed at making it easier for consumers to repair their electronics and fostering the Right-to-Repair movement. Earlier this year, Apple and Samsung launched self-service repair programs, providing parts for users looking to fix their smartphones. Google has also announced plans to sell genuine Pixel parts online for those interested in DIY repairs.
