Manufacturers need to become more agile to compete globally with economies where the cost of labor is an almost insignificant part of the cost of goods and they have access to the same high tech manufacturing equipment. It is time for forward thinking, competitively focused comanies to move to the next generation of IT tools, and strengthen their manufacturing and management information systems. Technology providers need to provide manufacturers with cost effective, highly mobile, highly adaptable, thin-client competitive capabilities. These capabilities will come in the form of software which is web-based (or web-native), object-oriented, model-driven, thin-client, configurable and offered as a service (SaaS).<br />Old ERP technology – the first generation<br />The truth is that first generation ERP applications lack the flexibility to add or change functionality and they just aren’t capable of full web funtionality. Because of their age and code foundations, most existing ERP vendors just can’t provide the full range of functionality made possible by the internet-native technologies. The ability of the native browser-based applications to interact with any device that can run a browser i.e. PDAs, cell phones and various data capture devices makes them intrinsically more valuable than the old ERP systems. Web-enabled does not mean web-browser native. These applications lack all of the abilities and advantages of a truly browser-native application. These first generation ERP vendors are racing to convert their aging, first generation offerings to the new, object-oriented, browser- based model of software. This is a difficult task, since the internal source code for these older packages is fundamentally unsuited for the web and cannot make use of the native functionality of the web browser. The total cost of owernship (TCO) for first generation systems is high, due to the legacy code burden, thick-client server setup and heavy support infrastructure. It means anywhere, anytime access to information within the system from any browser capable device. It has made complete connectivity very cost effective. Thin-client software is browser-based software which resides on a dedicated server. The server may belong to the client, the vendor or a host. Users have full access the system via “thin client terminals”, which really only require access through a browser to the dedicated server. This differs from traditional software installations, which require that a copy of the application be installed locally on each computer where it is to be used. This makes software upgrades infinitely easier, since only the program on the dedicated server needs to be upgraded, and not numerous client computers. This also saves time and disruption of work flow. Another advantage is the reduction in hardware needed at individual work stations to operate the software.<br />Model-driven design makes integration and upgrades easierIn conclusion<br />When you combine all of the features of the next generation software applications, what you end up with is a new class of software. There is no doubt that a successful individual in e-mini trading enjoys the kind of freedom most hourly workers would envy. But there’s of small problem that must be overcome before a trader can enjoy consistent and profitable trading; you have to learn how to trade e-minis and the market, as it stands, is a bit dodgy. There is reluctance by the e-mini trading educators and traders to disclose anything about performance and e-mini trading methodology. Some of this reluctance is understandable as traders are notoriously averse to disclosing anything about how they trade. In the past year, several review sites have uncovered some unsavory facts about trading rooms; and educational courses are difficult to evaluate my shoe have an extensive knowledge of the e-mini trading.In short, if you don’t have a good working knowledge of trading it is very difficult to evaluate which option will provide the most expedient route to trading success. On the other hand, if you have a good working knowledge of trading you probably don’t need any of the 3 offered options. It’s a real dilemma and I talk to traders every day who have been in unsuccessful trade rooms, tried to learn to trade with unethical e- mini educators, and bought a stack of day trading texts that were of little use in the long run.How do you learn to trade then?The honest answer (and this is coming from an e-mini educator/trader) is that the path to success is fraught with all kinds of problematic issues that take careful analysis. With a couple of wrong steps, you may well find yourself parting with an excessive amount of hard-earned cash and very little to show for it. I don’t really know how long some of the unsavory characters in this business have been working, as I retired from institutional trading and after several years began teaching and trading in the futures markets. In short, I have only been training individuals for about 5 years.My opinions are not too complicated on this topic; in my opinion it would be very difficult to learn to trade profitably by reading a “how to” sort of textbook. I use several textbooks in my trading course and have found that they are wonderful to augment basic principles of trading but there is so much more to trading that is learned through experience (and not in a textbook) that textbooks merely provide a structural framework from which to build a trading system.It is highly unlikely you’ll ever learn to trade in a trade room because the room moderator will make calls based upon his or her personal trading methodology and it is not in the moderators’ interest to disclose how he/she is making trading decisions. Additionally, performance issues have come to light regarding several trading rooms and documentation concerning past performance. I’m not going to elaborate on this touchy subject, but any perfunctory search on the topic will show scads of rumors, facts, and mass confusion regarding performance documentation.Finally, we come to e-mini education and the horizon tends to get even muddier, if not downright insane. You can only become as skilled, at least initially, as the sophistication of the educational system the vendor has to offer. Unfortunately, many if not most systems are just recycled techniques from dozens of identical systems. My advice is to thoroughly interview any potential trading educator and ask pointed questions about his/her experience. As a retired institutional trader, I am prejudiced towards people who have been on the floor or in the back room of one of the major investment houses because they have learned to handle pressure and succeed. I don’t get too upset when I trade because I have seen quite a few different trading dilemmas and have figured ways to rectify problems and stay detached emotionally.I have outlined some of the problems you are bound to encounter in your search for the proper methods of learning to trade e-minis. Unsatisfying office jobs followed by long periods of unemployment and claiming benefits. I’d also missed out on an opportunity to train as a Microsoft certified programmer because I was unable to find a placement. The dream of making my way into the world of employment had turned into an absolute nightmare, at times I felt like a total failure.</p><p>Towards the end of 1999 an opportunity arose for me to work in a casino. I’d always loved card games after seeing the glitz and glamour of casinos in James Bond movies. Dissatisfied with life in Northern Ireland, at the age of just 20, I packed a couple of suitcases and ended up going to the Isle of Man to train as a croupier (casino dealer) in January 2000. 18 months later I was working on my first cruise ship, and 18 months after that I was boarding the QE2 (the most famous ship of them all) to do a world cruise.</p><p>For a young man from a housing estate in Antrim, Northern Ireland this was beyond even my wildest dreams. On a ferry from Belfast to Liverpool in 1997, I’d once seen a pontoon table and croupier and dreamt what it may be to work as a casino dealer on the high seas.</p><p>Everything aboard the QE2 was as you would expect, starting with Captain Ron Warwick, who looked exactly what the captain of the QE2 should look like (Google the name if you don’t believe me). Passenger facing crew were immaculate in their appearance. I could probably have shaved with the crease on my pressed tuxedo shirts, and on a number of occassions when I had been sunburnt in port, I could feel the creases cutting into my tender skin as I dealt the cards that evening in the casino.</p><p>The great thing for croupiers on cruise ships is that they only work when the ship is in international waters, in port, the casino must close, and casino staff are free to do pretty much whatever they want. Casino staff have a cabin steward who cleans their cabin and takes away their dirty laundry and brings it back fresh each day. We did a 103 day world cruise which included stops in places like Hong Kong, Sydney, Cape Town, Hawaii, Mauritius, Nagasaki, Tahiti and Singapore to name a few. I managed to do some amazing excursions like diving in the great barrier reef, quad biking in the Namibian desert, and dining in all sorts of fine restaurants, trying delicacies like Springbok, Kangaroo, Crocodile and Kobe beef. We made stops in 5 continents, crossed the equator and even experienced living a Tuesday in consequetive days when we crossed the world timeline. Imagine that, you go to bed on Tuesday night, wake up the following morning and its Tuesday again, but this was far from groundhog day.</p><p>The role in the casino was not about taking passengers’ money like in a land-based casino, it was about providing them with fun and entertainment. The passengers were friendly and pleasant, many of them being extremely successful people (I understand the lowest cabin cost for a world cruise on the QE2 was about $50,000 in 2003). A lot of the passengers had never played in a casino and were fascinated to learn and experience the one onboard. Just getting to know some of these people was an experience in itself, and a large part of the role in the casino was simply to entertain them whilst they were in the casino.</p><p>There were also celebrity passengers. We would finish work and go to the crew/members bar where we would have guest entertainers like the late Des O’Connor and the magician, the late Paul Daniels down to have a drink. God bless them both.</p><p>Was my job the best job in the world? Maybe not for everyone, but it was beyond even my wildest dreams and the 6 month experience, as well as the amazing people I met will be something I treasure forever. As a home Inspector and owner of SafeHome Home Inspections (www.safetulsa.com) the easiest thing to look at for somebody who is not trained is a bad electric panel.</p><p>A “Bad” electric panel in the eyes of any home inspector means “unsafe” or less safe than other panels. It has been determined by studies, lawsuits, etc that these panels are not desirable.</p><p>Here is a list of bad panels that are very common in the Tulsa area. These panels are likely present in your local market as well, and every or nearly every home inspector will call them out in the report as in need of further evaluation for replacement: Zinsco, FPE (Federal Pacific Electric) Stab-lok, Challenger. These are the most common “bad” panels that I run into here in Tulsa.</p><p>You don’t need to do very much work to identify these panels, oftentimes they are labeled somewhere in plain sight. A word of caution though, the access door is fairly easy to open most of the time but you should never open the deadpan front cover, It’s dangerous and would require tools anyway and you might as well leave something for the inspector to do .</p><p>I could go into detail about why these electric panels are dangerous and the different studies that have been done about them over the years but why bore you with that? If you want more information you can do a quick google search on any of these brands or look up one of the main studies by Mechanical and Materials engineer Dr. Jesse Aronstein titled “Hazardous FPE circuit breakers and panels: Information for Homeowners, Inspectors, and Electricians”</p><p>While you may not have to avoid a home like this completely, letting the buyer know in advance will at least prepare them so there isn’t a shock on the report, and who knows, maybe a seller will still be willing to change out the panel “in today’s market”.
