Although prototype electric vehicles (EVs) were invented in the 1800s and various models were built in the 1900s, the EV industry only began in earnest after the turn of the century. The advantage of an EV is fuel economy. All-electric models can reach the equivalent of around 100 MPG. However, they have a distance limit, typically from 40 to 80 miles. When the battery runs out, they have to be charged, which is a problem away from home. There are electric charging stations, but often few and far between. Hybrids Hybrid vehicles have no distance limit and are less economical with fuel; generally no more than 50 MPG. In 2010, GM introduced the plug-in, hybrid-electric Chevrolet Volt. The Volt is a gas-powered car that runs on battery for short distances, allowing those commuters to enjoy great economy when plugged into their home's electrical panel overnight. The Volt can last up to 50 miles on its electric charge, at which time the internal combustion engine takes over. A regular hybrid-electric vehicle such as the first Toyota Prius is filled with gas, and the vehicle charges the battery. The Prius technology determines when to switch from the battery to the gas engine. Toyota later came out with a plug-in hybrid. All-Electrics In 2009, the Tesla Roadster was the first all-electric with a range of a little more than 200 miles. Rather than retrofitting an electric drive train into an existing chassis, the Tesla was engineered from the ground up as an EV. In 2014, Tesla had sufficient charging stations in the U.S. to enable Tesla owners to drive from Los Angeles to New York entirely free, because Tesla has thus far not collected any fee for the charges. First EV Car for the Masses General Motors built and leased more than a thousand EV1 electric cars from 1996 to 1999 to meet California's environmental deadline. However, the EV program gave way to low-emission gas and hybrid gas-electric cars. This car is in the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C. The Tesla Roadster Featuring zero emissions and great handling, the Tesla can go more than 200 miles on a single charge. With a top speed of 125 MPH, it can reach 60 in less than four seconds.

Vehicles

Fastest Electric Go Kart

Choosing humanity’s greatest strength is a bit of a tricky task. Is it opposable thumbs? Speech? The ability to convey information in a series of squiggles and dots? Sarcasm? Well, with the C5 go-kart as exhibit A, we’d like to suggest that the greatest gift of all is that of boredom. Without boredom, we’d never have ideas like an all-electric go-kart that can fling itself from a standstill to 60 miles an hour in just 1.5 seconds. If you remember, that’s basically an EV record, attained by the Grimsel, a vehicle that resembles a go-kart, if it were prepped to tackle Pikes Peak. So, you might be wondering, what exactly is an EDF? Well, it stands for electric ducted fan, which might give you some clue as to the nature of the modern art masterpiece that adorns the back of the C5. If it looks a little aeronautical, that’s because it is; it uses the same principle as your average prop plane, but within a shroud that is eerily reminiscent of an airboat. And they’re certainly a laugh. The principle is much the same as in the aviation industry – air is sucked into the leading edge of the fan shroud, is sped up and spat out the back, creating thrust. Wonderful, exceptionally dangerous thrust. So, while the standard C5 Blast go-kart uses a 10kW electric motor to propel itself from zero to 60 in 3.9 seconds, the ‘Ultimate’ spec (it’s hard to argue with the title when it has that many motors) harnesses the power of propellers and the spirit of a Louisiana airboat to accelerate from zero to 60 in a rather worrying 1.5 seconds. Or at least that’s what Canadian outfit Daymak have claimed; we’re yet to see anything in the way of definitive proof. So far, we’ve watched – and heard – as the bevy of EDFs spooled up to leave literal dust clouds in the wake of the C5, and it certainly looks like the handful you were expecting it to be towards the end of this video. But that’s really only the start of the craziness. Apparently, those fans that sit either side of the driver aren’t ducted to provide even greater longitudinal thrust. Nope, and it’s weird to even ponder the concept, but the idea is that they create almost 100kg of thrust directly downwards. And, if you’re familiar with Isaac Newton, you’ll recognise that the practical upshot is nearly 100kg of lift at full chat. Nope, not downforce a lá the Brabham BT46, but lift, to make the C5 perform as if it weighed 100kg. Window, meet tongue. Daymak’s president, Aldo Baiocchi, has said that “we could actually make it lighter and faster and at some point the go-kart would start floating like the Star Wars land speeder or we could add wings and it would fly. Speed will not be an issue and we think we can even go, eventually, under one second 0 to 60, making it faster then any vehicle in existence.”

Electric Karting

Electric Bicycle Store

Grand Opening and Earth Day Celebration energizes region with two days of special events Mile High is throwing a combined grand opening and Earth Day celebration on April 21 and 22, and the public is invited to join the fun ...

Grand Opening and Earth Day Celebration energizes region with two days of special events Mile High is throwing a combined grand opening and Earth Day celebration on April 21 and 22, and the public is invited to join the fun. This electric bike is quite inexpensive - other electric bikes range in price from $700 up to $3000 in the U.S. For half the price, this is a solid bike with good range and power. My bike arrived partly-assembled in a box. It took me about an hour to attach the seat, front wheel and pedals. The lead-acid battery took about 2 to 3 hours to come to full charge. The weight of this battery and the motor make the E-Zip a heavy bike. Using the electric motor on this bike is simple - once you've started pedaling, you can turn the throttle, and the motor kicks in, giving you an immediate boost. On hills this really makes a difference - you can speed up most hills with ease. I've found that the range of a fully-charged battery is about 10 miles - that's if you make liberal use of the electric assist. If you just use it to go up hills, the charge will last for 20-25 miles. The battery detaches so that you can charge at a cafe or an office. You can also add a second battery for $120 from Currie Technologies, that will double your range (but also increase the bike's weight). Unfortunately, the bike's manual says that the lead-acid batteries are only good for one year. If you use this bike for a commute that is 20 miles or less, you could definitely arrive at the office without breaking a sweat. I was pleased by the power of the motor. It was easy to achieve speeds of 25 mph while pedaling lightly.

Electric Bicycles

Electric Bicycle Wheel Motor

Our 250 Series BAFANG 8FUN LEED e-bike front hub motor is one of the best electric bike motors on the market. This motor can easily be used to convert your traditional bicycle into an electric bicycle! Order a motor separately if you need a replacement, so you don’t have to get another electric bike conversion kit to get your hands on one. This version of the motor is intended for your bike’s front wheel, which is the most efficient and useful option on most conversions. Benefits This planetary-geared BLDC pulse width modulation (PWM) 250w 24v brushless hub motor only weighs six pounds, and it comes with an eight inch three-pin cable that is attached. The 8FUN motor has become the industry standard for performance and quality, and it has gained a well-earned reputation for enduring the most challenging trips. Thanks to the brushless hub design, you can pedal free without resistance when the motor is not engaged. Comfortably pedal like you always have, and then engage the motor when you need help on those tough hills and long trips. This e-bike front hub motor is quiet, powerful, and delivers plenty of torque. With the motor’s durable, reliable, and weather proof construction, you can rest assured that it will serve you on your journey. The motor is internally greased and fully sealed, and you can expect it to run maintenance-free for years.

Electric Karting

Electric Bicycle hire

We gave them a good work out last week on the stunning Hawea River Track, riding from the Good Rotations shop around the Lake Outlet to the lakeshore in Hawea and back again. The Pedegos performed admirably, with the 15ah battery version doing the 45kms with energy to spare, and the 10ah version just running out as we got back to the shop. A pretty good performance, as we rode them rather lazily to put them to a ‘real conditions’ test! The only stumbling block were the slightly ill-conceived steps onto one side of the swing bridge over the river. Fine with a light non-electric bike for the agile and fit, but probably a limitation for the many potential cyclists who would otherwise use this great track more. A bit of grappling and the Pedegos were onto the bridge, but it could definitely be a little more user friendly! Sporty cyclists might not agree, but it would be nice if anyone could make the journey easily. All in all the Pedego Commuter makes a pretty sweet trail/gravel road commuter: the Schwalbe Balloon tyres give plenty of cushioning and decent grip. You could easily run a fast rolling trail tyre for a bit more edge grip in the loose surface. We’d probably switch out the sumptuous saddle for something more streamlined for regular use, but it certainly has sofa-like properties! The rear rack fits our Ortlieb panniers well and the built in lights came in very useful on the final stretch home. Come and visit us for a test ride, or hire one for a day or two and see how an e-bike can fit into your daily routine. If you decide to buy, we’ll take any hire cost off the purchase price. Come try us for electric bike hire in Wanaka. The world is sweet from a bicycle seat!

Electric Bicycles

Razor Electric Bicycle

A Full Service Professional Bike Shop Store Hours Spring 2017 Hours Monday: CLOSED Tuesday - Friday: 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM Saturday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Sunday: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM 2017 Calendar of events / closings: "Please call if ...

A Full Service Professional Bike Shop Store Hours Spring 2017 Hours Monday: CLOSED Tuesday - Friday: 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM Saturday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Sunday: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM 2017 Calendar of events / closings: "Please call if you have any questions."
