Vail, CO February 23, 2023 Nash Lucas cranked out another win at the RMF Regional Championships at Winter Park on Saturday. Teammate Garrett Marley led after the first run with a colossal score of 88.88, two points better than Lucas’s 86.57. In the second run, Winter Parker Asher Michel laid down the fastest run of the day, but Lucas’ superiority in the air won the day. Nash’s back full to cork 7 mute run scored a whopping 89.57 for the victory. Marley’s 88.88 held up well enough for second place, holding off the speedy Michel. SSCV’s Jackson True was third in age class M19 and 5th overall with Jameson Kust 6th overall. Jiah Cohen, 7th overall, led an SSCV sweep of the U17 podium with Caden McCormick and Ryan Stockton in second and third. SSCV’s Beckett Dickson took 3rd in age class M15.

In the women’s Mogul Championship, hometown girl Olivia Maurais won it for Winter Park. Vail’s Cali Carr, 6th overall and 3rd in U17, landed back tuck to back iron cross for the highest SSCV finish. Mahlia Torres, SSCV, won the U15 age class with fluid turns and sneaky speed. Sister Kaiya Torres spun her way to 10th with 360 to 3 mute. U13 phenom Ava Keenan continued her age class dominance to remain undefeated on the season.

In Sunday’s Dual Mogul Championship, Marley and Lucas went head to head for the title. This time Marley wouldn’t be denied and stormed the Ambush course for a 15-10 judges decision. Marley’s starts were strong all day and pushed hard enough to force mistakes from his opponents. Marley’s composure at speed carried him through the day and gave him his first RMF Duals Championship title. Teammate Chase Barros battled to 8th place.

Reese Chapdelaine vindicated herself to join Marley as regional champ in the women’s dual mogul event. After a rough Saturday finish just outside the top 20, Chapdelaine rallied with speed and the best turns in the field and to knock off opponents all the way to the big final against teammate Cali Carr. Chapdelaine stuck to her game taking turns, speed, and the overall for a convincing 16-9 win. En route to her second place finish, Carr knocked off Saturday’s champ Olivia Maurais in the semi final. SSCV’s Kaiya Torres and Ava Keenan dualed to 5th and 6th with Kaiya taking down Ava in the head to head. Keenan’s rocky road to 6th featured a crazy crash-filled win against Steamboat star Anabel Ayad in the round of 16 and a dicey tip-in crash against Torres.

Nash’s win and second place finishes on the championship weekend secured him the overall title in the NBS Grand Prix. The $6000 First Prize goes to the athlete with the best 3 mogul and best 2 dual mogul results on the RMF tour. With Telluride RMF still to go (March 4 & 5), the women’s title is still up for grabs with both Cali Carr and Reese Chapdelaine in contention. Steamboat’s Anabel Ayad won the title in 2022 and leads the women’s Grand Prix and holds the lead headed into the last event of the RMF season.

Fourteen and fifteen year- old alpine ski racers from throughout the Rocky Mountain Division of US Ski & Snowboard gave it their all in two giant slalom and two slalom races in the hopes of securing a coveted spot at the U16 Rocky Central Championships to be held March 6-10 in Winter Park where the top U16 athletes in the Rocky Central region will converge to compete for a spot at U16 Nationals. SSCV athletes proved that months of preparation on and off the hill really do pay off, securing 12 podiums and 45 top ten overall spots across the four days of racing, with twelve SSCV boys and seven SSCV girls qualifying for the U16 Rocky Central Championships.

SSCV Head U16 Mens Coach Ian Dunlop stated, “It’s never an easy week with the added pressure of the qualification looming over the athletes’ minds. Our boys handled the pressure well. We’ll be rolling deep with the largest contingent of athletes at the Rocky Central Championship events at Winter Park in March. We’ll take the momentum and focus our efforts towards improving on these results going forward.”

Adam Chadbourne, SSCV U16 Head Women’s Coach, stated, “Seven women from the U16 ranks qualified from the races at Vail this past week, and the speed races in Aspen last month, to attend the Rocky/Central Championships in Winter Park in early March. The coaching staff are super proud of all of the girls for putting in their best effort during the qualifiers. They were well prepared, focused, and skied aggressively. Though a few on our team came up just short of their goal of qualifying (including the first and third alternates), they all skied with courage and gave it everything they had. Only 22 girls qualify for the championships. Those not qualifying to the R/C Champs will attend the RMD Championships/Prater Cup in Crested Butte, also in early March.”

SSCV Alpine Program Director Brad Wall stated, “It has been great for SSCV to host this qualifying event. The Rocky Mountain Division has an incredibly competitive group of U16 athletes as shown by the recent results at international U16 events in Germany and Slovenia with the US Team comprised of athletes from this region. It is great for our SSCV athletes to compete on their home hill and this series has given SSCV the opportunity to showcase the full versatility of Gold Peak, utilizing multiple trails for the series. Congratulations to all of the competitors and good luck in the upcoming championship events.”

February 9, 2023 Vail, CO February 4th & 5th, the Rocky Mountain Freestyle circuit returned to Gold Peak for the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) Mogul Classic. Saturday’s open mogul event featured top regional and FIS athletes including a few Australians finishing up their annual Colorado pilgrimage. Winter Park’s Asher Michel blazed the course in just under 22 seconds to win the men’s event. Vail’s Jackson True charged to 2nd with aggressive skiing on the 222 meters at 27 degrees pitch. Porter Huff, a U15 picked up the third podium spot for Winter Park. For SSCV, Caden McCormick broke the top 10 with 8th overall and a 3rd place in the strong U17 field won by Killington’s Gabriel Johnson.

In the women’s open, Winter Park dominated again with Olivia Maurais perching atop the podium. SSCV’s Cali Carr’s second run bumped ahead of teammate Reese Chapdelaine, also SSCV, for 2nd and 3rd. Chapdelaine skied the fastest run of the day, and Carr was within a half second, but Maurais’ turns won the day. Back from injury sustained at Vail’s previous event in December, U15 Mahlia Torres made a strong return to competition with a 5th overall and an ageclass victory. Winner of last year’s Vail RMF event U13 champion Ava Keenan, took 6th testing out a new air package of Back Tuck to Back X.

In Sunday’s Duals, Keenan and Torres marched through the brackets, where the Vail teammates went head to head for an SSCV final. Ava Keenan stomped her run to take the duals crown. Torres got tossed in the middle section, but came away unscathed with silver. SSCV’s Sophie Jachimowicz narrowly missed out on a Vail sweep coming away with 4th place, guardian to the podium. In the men’s bracket, Winter Park cruised to a sweep with John Orgeldinger, Porter Huff and Parker Burrows crowding the podium. For SSCV, Beckett Dickson was the sole finalist battling it out for 8th place.

These values are always at the forefront of everything its staff imparts on and expects of its athletes both on and off snow. This month SSCV honors Severin Richaud as its 3C January Athlete Award Winner and Brad Kreuz as its 3C January Staff Award Winner.

3C January 2023 SSCV Athlete Award Winner – Severin Richaud

Severin Richaud is a full-time high school athlete within the SSCV Snowboard program. Below is his nomination:

Coming from our neighbors in Summit County, Severin has adapted very well to this new environment and new classmates/team. Throughout dryland training Sevs has demonstrated the core values of the club and the 3C standard, without even knowing it existed. His COMMITMENT to the club, others, and himself is demonstrated daily with his drive to work out harder, jump higher, and put in more than just the effort. He works hard every day to better himself and his snowboarding. This is very impressive to see. He is never shy, never intimidated, and always kind and respectful. He is always ready to work hard and snowboard harder. These things show everyday in his CHARACTER. Being respectful to his coaches and peers, Severin has proven that he has what it takes to be a part of the club and the school. He always listens and works hard to perform the workout, drill, or trick. He has kept his grades up and his spirit soaring. He is always staying focused on his goals with his snowboarding and in school. All of this takes COURAGE to succeed. Severin shows his courage to become an all around better snowboarder and person every day we are out there. When some kids might want to stop and take a break during a workout, Sevs is there sweating and pushing himself and never giving up. Seeing a kid almost come to tears because he is pushing his physical limits during a workout and seeing him push himself to learn more and ride harder is all very impressive.

The following SSCV athletes have achieved the honor of being nominated for SSCV’s January 3C Athlete Award:

Tyler Ciluzzi

Brooklyn DePriest

Margaret Gustafson

Oliver Jones

Keira Lahiff

Rohan Naidu

Mack Smith

Fletcher Taylor

3C January 2023 SSCV Staff Award Winner – Brad Kreuz

Brad Kreuz is the SSCV Head Mogul Development Coach. Brad received two separate nominations for the 3C January 2023 SSCV Staff Award reflected below.

Despite sustaining a season-ending injury in November, Brad has done whatever he could with his limited mobility to continue coaching and supporting his team of bump skiers. As soon as possible after his surgery he made sure to be a constant presence in the clubhouse so that he could be there for the kids before and after training, and his genuine concern and commitment for their ongoing development continues to be a huge asset for his team.

Not only is Brad an amazing mogul coach but he genuinely cares so much about our kids. Despite his injury this year, he continues to push the kids to do their best in a very positive, kind, caring manner.

A number of SSCV staff received the honor of being nominated for SSCV’s January 3C Staff Award:

Molly went on to win Sunday’s giant slalom race in that same series.

January 31, 2023 Vail, Colorado Ski & Snowboard Club Vail hosted the Colorado Ski Cup on Golden Peak on January 26, 27, 28 and 29, a qualifier event not only for U18 Nationals but also US Nationals, with two days of Super G and two days of Giant Slalom racing. Over 130 alpine racers from throughout the Rocky and Central region year of birth 2002-2006 along with a few seniors showed up to give it their all in the hopes of obtaining a coveted spot at one and or both of these two prestigious national events, dependent on their year of birth. SSCV athletes took 13 overall podiums (includes one SSCV former athlete) and 18 U18 podiums over the course of these four days.

“It was exciting to see so many notable move up performances from SSCV athletes the past few days. Everyone has been working hard throughout the spring, summer and fall prep periods, both on and off snow, to be ready for a great race season. The team was ready and showed up when it counted,” stated SSCV Head Mens FIS Coach Ian Lochhead.

Lisa Perricone, SSCV Head Womens FIS Coach stated, “These girls really push each other to be their very best selves both on and off snow. Although it is an individual sport, the support they give each other, whether a breakout run or a run riddled with opportunities for growth, truly makes them a team, in turn making each of them stronger individually.”

Highlights for the SSCV women in this series:

-Eva Croney-Ferraiuoli has not raced since U14 Champs in March of 2020 because of injuries. After almost three years of working hard to get back to the sport she loves, she raced her first FIS race on Saturday (late in the season) and moved from bib 58 to finish 30th which is really amazing.

-Kate McKenney and Nicole Begue tied for first place (U18 podium) on Saturday. Ties happen in many races, but ties for first and getting to share the top spot of the podium with a teammate is really special.

-Molly Roberts got her first FIS win Sunday in the GS. Amazing result for her and well deserved.

-Sage Sappenfield got on the U18 Podium (3rd) in Sunday’s GS. It finished off the second SSCV U18 Women’s GS podium sweep in two days.

Highlights for the SSCV men in this series:

-Hunter Salani had two great races winning both GS’s, the first one by over 1 second.

-It was awesome to see Julian Arthur get his first win in a speed discipline. He’s been working hard to improve his speed skiing and it was great to see him get a good result.

-Carson Hume had 2 really strong super g runs.

-William Zurbay (second in the January 29 GS) and Brady Malboeuf (2 big bibos) had great results both coming back from season ending injuries last season. Really proud of how hard they’ve worked to be back stronger.

-Henry Andrie and Hunter Peterson both had great GS races as well.

SSCV Alpine Program Director Brad Wall stated, “It was no small feat to pull off these races, particularly in the midst of over 13 inches of fresh snow over the course of the event and over 23 inches of new snowfall in the past week.”

“Particularly with Super G speed events, there are many days of advance preparation needed watering the hill and having all appropriate b-netting (single, double and tripled layers in relevant spots) dug out and in place to assure an outstanding surface and the necessary safety measures to create a great race venue for all. Many thanks to Vail Mountain, the Vail Race Crew, groomers, coaches, parent volunteers and athletes for the many hours put in to deliver four outstanding races.”

Vail, Colorado January 27, 2023 – Seventeen Ski & Snowboard Club Vail (SSCV) U14 alpine athletes and three SSCV coaches recently returned from a life-impacting experience in Austria. Ski Club Arlberg played host to these twelve and thirteen-year-old SSCV athletes on the heels of a same-aged group of U14 and U16 alpine athletes from Ski Club Arlberg visiting and training with SSCV and hosted by SSCV U14 parents in December.

Not only were these SSCV athletes exposed to their fellow Austrians’ athletics and training venues, but they also experienced a total cultural immersion with family home stays (and in some cases, family-owned hotel stays) with the parents of similarly aged Austrian ski racers from Ski Club Arlberg, making it a very low cost, financially accessible trip.

SSCV athletes not only formed lasting friendships with athletes and parents, but they also trained and became familiar with the local fare. They even ventured to St. Anton for a Womens World Cup Super G race. They also visited St. Anton where the FIS Junior World Ski Championships were taking place with the top youth alpine athletes in the world, including several current and former SSCV athletes. Opportunities like these can surely make young athletes dream big, and foster the intrinsic motivation to make these dreams a reality.

John Hale, SSCV Executive Director, stated, “The exchange between SSCV and Ski Club Arlberg began in 2019/20, resumed in 2022/23, and we are especially proud of the program. We look forward to all the exchange will bring to the young ski racers of the Vail Valley and Lech and St. Anton for years to come. The opportunity for young athletes to immerse in the respective cultures by staying in family homes and forming lifelong friendships, and the low-cost benefits – are fantastic. We are grateful to the team at SCA for making the European leg of the exchange a resounding success!”

Two of the three SSCV coaches traveling with the athletes are former World Cup racers, Martin Bell from Great Britain and Patrik Jaerbyn from Sweden, both fluent in German, making it much easier for everyone to navigate their time abroad. The third SSCV coach Brett Borgard stated, “Not only was it great to watch the athletes be exposed to the alpine racing culture, talent pool and coaches at Ski Club Arlberg, but it was also great for them to experience international travel and stays away from home and parents before their first international training camp or competition trip.”

“The growth in these young athletes, even over the ten days we were in Austria, was quite remarkable. When children are at home it is easy to rely on parents for too many things. My favorite story of the trip which really brought this to light was an athlete who forgot his skis on a training day with no ability to go home to get them or to call his mom or dad to bring them to him.”

“Well – he figured it out. He walked a few hundred yards to the base village, found a ski shop that carried race skis, got them fitted to his bindings and quickly got back to the base of the lift to join his teammates, missing only one run. He must have made a good impression on the shopkeeper who gave him a pair of complementary race skis to use for the day. More importantly, neither this athlete nor anybody else on the trip forget their gear the rest of the trip.”

Ski Club Arlberg is the oldest ski club in the world with over 9000 members. Beaver Creek Resort and Lech Zeurs are sister resorts and Ski Club Arlberg is the only ski club associated with Lech Zeurs. Former Vail Mayor Ludwig Kurz was involved in forming the Beaver Creek Resorts side of this sister resort relationship and was part of the early discussions for facilitating this exchange of alpine athletes a number of years ago and remains involved to this day. The exchange is in its second year, postponed for the past two seasons due to COVID-19.

SSCV U14 Head Coach Rob Worrell stated, “We look forward to continuing this exchange with Ski Club Arlberg for many years to come. Long after their ski racing years are over the athletes involved in these exchanges will continue to reflect back on the friendships made and carry with them an impressive level of confidence for taking on new experiences near and far, knowing they can do it on their own.”
