Penang International Airport, a proud member of Malaysia Airports, joyfully welcomed back two prestigious global airlines in the exciting month of October! The return of Qatar Airways on its Doha-Phuket-Penang route, offering daily flights, and the debut of Thai Airways International with daily services to Bangkok has ignited an incredible spark of enthusiasm among us.

MAHB enthusiastically reported an increase in passenger traffic year-on-year, with our local operations recording a staggering 6.8 million passenger movements in October 2023. This accounts for a whopping 67 percent of the group’s overall 10.2 million movements, equally contributed by our vibrant domestic and international sectors, each boasting 3.4 million passenger movements.

The international sector’s growth of 3.6 percent over September 2023 has been an exhilarating journey, thanks to a remarkable 3.3 percent rise in airlines’ seat capacity. Excitingly, new services from KL International Airport to Zhangjiajie, China by Batik Air Malaysia; Kertajati, Indonesia by Malaysia Airlines; and Padang, Indonesia by Super Air Jet have played a pivotal role in this expansion!

Celebrations continue as October witnessed domestic passenger movements reaching an impressive 80.3 percent of 2019 levels, hosting 3.4 million passengers with an average load factor of 81.5 percent – the second-highest to date, following the exceptional record of 82.2 percent in August 2023.

In comparison, Turkiye’s Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SAW), managed a commendable 3.3 million passenger movements, constituting the remaining 33 percent of MAHB’s incredible total of 10.2 million passenger movements. SAW achieved 4.7 percent above 2019 levels, handling 1.7 million international and 1.6 million domestic passenger movements.

As we approach the year’s end, MAHB is thrilled by the promising trajectory showcased by the aviation industry’s recovery, highlighted by the exceptional operational performance and air traffic movements in October 2023.

Bringing more joy to the table, year-to-date, the group has amassed an incredible 98.9 million passenger movements, marking an impressive 84.7 percent of the pre-pandemic 2019 level. The journey towards recovery has been invigorating, and Penang Airport are energized to keep soaring higher.

Penang News, George Town: Penang Development Corporation (PDC) will be the only agency responsible for developing industrial parks in the state, the Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow, announced in the state assembly. He added that these projects would not be given to the private sector.

Chow, who is also the chairman of PDC, was responding to an oral question from Lim Guan Eng (PH-Air Putih) who had asked for a list of land PDC had given to the private sector to be developed as industrial parks.

Chow clarified that PDC’s industrial land banks are strategically located and can be marketed to investors in promoted industries. However, there was collaboration on such development as in the case of developing part of Batu Kawan Industrial Park 2 (BKIP2) to reduce the risks and cost of PDC.

He explained that the issue was that the land was located in a non-conducive surrounding and PDC needed to work with others to develop the park.

Chow assured that PDC has over 50 years of experience in the development of successful industrial parks in the state. He emphasized that PDC would continue to develop industrial parks that would draw domestic and foreign investors, especially those lands in strategic locations without involving the private sector.

He added that PDC would collaborate with the private sector for high-risk and less competitive areas as PDC has a track record of successfully developing nine industrial parks in the state to ensure a sustainable industrial ecosystem.

Penang street art “Children on a Bicycle” by Ernest Zacharevic

One of the most iconic and widely recognized murals in Penang.
Located on Armenian Street, this colorful artwork showcases a group of children riding a bicycle, exuding an air of innocence and camaraderie. The mural not only adds vibrancy to the streets but also celebrates the unity and playfulness of childhood. Step into a world where art breathes life into brick and mortar, where colors dance and stories come alive.

In this beautiful mural, Zacharevic skillfully captures the essence of childhood joy and innocence. A lively scene unfolds before your eyes: two children, their beaming smiles radiating pure happiness, pedal their way through an imaginary world of wonder. Their bicycles, adorned with vibrant flowers, seem to effortlessly glide through the whimsical streets of Penang, leaving trails of imagination in their wake.
The mural itself stands as a testament to Zacharevic’s immense talent and his unique ability to connect with viewers on a profound level. The artist’s signature blend of realism and playfulness invites us to reflect on our own cherished memories of childhood and the unbridled freedom we experienced during those carefree days. With each stroke of his brush, Zacharevic transports us to a time when the world was full of endless possibilities.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Zacharevic’s work is his deep connection with the local community giving meaning into Penang street art. Rather than merely adorning the walls with his art, he weaves his creations into the fabric of everyday life. “Little Children on a Bicycle” is no exception. It pays homage to the vibrant spirit of Penang, a city renowned for its cultural heritage and warm hospitality. The mural seems to invite passersby to join in the children’s adventure, to reclaim a piece of their own childhood and embrace the sense of boundless curiosity that defines us all.
Beyond its visual charm, this mural catalyzes conversation and introspection. It reminds us of the importance of nurturing the childlike wonder that resides within us, even as we navigate the complexities of adulthood. It prompts us to pause, if only for a moment, and embrace the magic that still lingers within our hearts.

The impact of Zacharevic’s murals extends far beyond the physical boundaries of Penang. Through the lens of social media and the power of storytelling, his art has reached millions around the world, igniting a sense of awe and wonder in the hearts of those who encounter it. “Little Children on a Bicycle” symbolizes hope, reminding us of the universal language of art that transcends cultural barriers and connects us all.
