Perplexity and other answer engines are being molded to behave like search engines. Are we heading into an era where LLMs become the next Google or Bing?

If you’ve been closely following the rise of AI tools, one company seems to be getting most of the attention: Perplexity. Currently valued at roughly USD$20 billion, this San Francisco-based startup has made waves in the AI scene since its founding in 2022.

Not because of its large language model (LLM). Not because of its growing valuation.

It’s positioning itself to be the next Google.

Its recent attempt to buy Chrome for USD$34.5 billion isn’t beating the allegations. While some analysts dismissed it as a stunt amid a likely breakup of the Big G, having a proving ground for developing AI habits like Chrome would be a significant boost for Perplexity. The technology transfer would also give its own browser, Comet, a considerable edge.

Explaining the economics of mergers is beyond my pay grade, but it got me thinking. With all the talk about how search engines are changing in the AI era, Perplexity may be on the road to becoming one. If it does, then it won’t be unusual if other LLMs follow suit.

Explaining LLMs Like You’re Five

I’ve used the term “LLM” quite a couple of times, but I haven’t had the chance to explain it. Fortunately, now’s a perfect time to understand it down to its nuts and bolts, starting with the term “language model.”

Google defines a language model as a type of machine learning model designed to predict the next word or set of words. If that rings a bell, that’s because Google’s autocomplete is one example of a language model. It predicts the words the user will likely enter next based on searches they and other users have made in the past. (1)

Training a language model requires feeding it “tokens.” These building blocks of AI training help the model understand each word it receives by breaking a sentence down into units, typically per word. In this case, the query “are cheetahs friendly” consists of three tokens.

Do this millions or billions of times, and a language model evolves into an LLM. There’s no widely accepted minimum, but most LLMs today are trained on at least two billion training parameters. BERT, released in 2018, is considered an LLM despite only being trained using around 110 million parameters. (1)(2)

Their large size enables them to respond to more complex queries and perform a variety of tasks. That’s how AI tools like Perplexity manage to deliver detailed information on, say, a beginner’s guide to starting a Gundam collection. And it comes with a few links, too.

Is Perplexity a Search Engine?

Going by the company’s words, Perplexity is described as an AI-powered search engine. It also described the tool as an answer engine, but the source for that is several months old. You can be one or the other, but not both. (3)

Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but the two are distinct even if AI is blurring the line dividing them. Search engines return a list of links to pages relevant to a user’s query; the iconic “blue links” as professionals call them. Meanwhile, answer engines return a summary of the information users require, which saves time.

By this definition, Perplexity and similar tools are still acting like answer engines. They may provide a list of links, but the fact that they’re separate from the actual answer means not everyone may come across it. They aren’t like Google, which still provides apparent links to sources even when the results come with AI-generated summaries.

This may not look like a cause for concern, but it is. For starters, Perplexity isn’t foolproof.

I asked the tool who won the 1998 Autumn Tenno Sho, a Grade-1 horse race in Japan. The answer looks convincing…

…except that it got one thing wrong.

Perplexity may have gotten the injury and euthanasia part right, but Silence Suzuka never finished the race due to said injury and had to be put down on the track. Maybe the tool was thinking about who won the hearts of everyone in that race, but that wasn’t what my query was asking. (4)

Other users have also reported that Perplexity returned inaccurate answers. Chris Dunlop, CEO of AI strategy firm Cub Digital, did a similar but more comprehensive experiment that involved asking the number of games New Zealand’s national rugby team have played in Dunedin since 1990. Then, he had the tool tabulate every game.

Despite Perplexity initially answering that the team played 20 games, the subsequent table returned 32. And one of them, against Australia, got the date and place wrong. He then ran 100 more sports and non-sports-related queries, resulting in an 85% accuracy rate.

Not bad, you say?

Well, Dunlop pointed out that this is more dangerous than having, say, a 50% accuracy rate. People are more likely to trust whatever comes out of Perplexity’s (or any AI tool’s) algorithm, including the 15% that’s completely wrong. (5)

This tendency, known as automation bias, is a major issue in treating Perplexity or a similar tool like a search engine. Without features that make double-checking easier, the tool risks not inspiring action, making users follow incorrect instructions, or even inflicting harm. (6)

Are LLMs Becoming Search Engines?

No. At least, not in their current state.

First, the earlier wrong answers that Perplexity returned are a side effect of hallucination. This is inevitable because LLMs are designed to generate probabilities based on the data provided. It’s up to the user to determine which of these probabilities is fact. At the same time, it’s also necessary to allow answer engines to create information.

That said, hallucination becomes a problem when it must process Your Money, Your Life (YMYL) queries. In November last year, a lawyer in Texas was fined for submitting a court filing that contained citations and quotes fabricated by AI. It was one of a string of cases that courts across the country dealt with that year.

It doesn’t help that there’s no way to understand how LLMs make decisions and why they make them. Worse, OpenAI’s study last April discovered that more advanced LLMs were more likely to hallucinate, and experts can’t explain why. (7)

There’s also the problem of the declining supply of good training data. Recent projections place the current data supply up to 2032 at the latest, but practices such as overtraining can hasten the decline by around five years.

Source: Epoch AI

In light of this, AI companies and tech firms are turning to synthetic data. But as I explained in my post about the risk of model collapse, poor-quality synthetic data risks future models growing more inept with each iteration. Perplexity’s erroneous answers from earlier give a glimpse of what can happen if data quality can’t be guaranteed.

Lastly, LLMs are limited by their knowledge cutoff or the date of the latest data they were trained on. If you ask something current to a model whose cutoff date is up to last year, it should inform you that it can’t provide a reliable answer. Below is a list of verified cutoff dates for specific models.

**Deprecation started in September 2025

The downside is that an LLM’s answer is only as good as its latest training data, compared to search engines that constantly update in real time. As a workaround, some models now come with web browsing capability to retrieve and be trained on later data. This works by integrating search engines like Google for Gemini and Bing for OpenAI.

Perplexity is capable of web browsing, which is why it doesn’t have a published cutoff date. That said, it isn’t without risks, one of which is the possibility of the model leaking sensitive data and leading to a potential breach. Additionally, the tool may still not be able to access paywalled content (e.g., academic journals, subscription news services). (8)(9)

A Future Possibility

Just because it isn’t possible now doesn’t mean it won’t be a reality soon. If future models can somehow mitigate the issues explained and design an AI tool that encourages users to double-check the generated answers, they’ll be on the path to becoming search engines.

We’ve already started blurring the line dividing search and answer engines. From this point on, the only way is forward.

SEO has ‘died’ far more times than you could count, and every time it returned better than before. Here’s a closer look at those instances.

A mad scientist once said, “If I had a nickel for every time SEO ‘died,’ I’d have a couple of nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened that many times.” Okay, that’s not the exact quote, but how he wished he were a few nickels richer now.

It seems like when a major Google core update or some modern doohickey debuts, people are quick to sound the death knell for SEO. We’re seeing this right now with the shift toward AI summaries driving the decline of organic traffic. Ranking at the top of search results isn’t as important as it was several years ago.

But time and time again, the response from industry experts remains: SEO isn’t dead, it just changed. That doesn’t mean SEO is immortal; if search engines cease to exist, so will SEO.

That said, SEO practices and principles have changed over the years. As much as we like to keep them, trends don’t stay constant. Search engine algorithms must adapt to changes in consumer and business trends to maintain their usefulness. Without further ado, here’s an in-depth look at the times SEO “died” but returned better than ever.

PageRank

SEO didn’t start with Google.

The early 1990s witnessed the birth of the first generation of search engines, starting with WHOIS. It isn’t so much a search engine as it’s a query and response protocol designed to look up Internet resources. These include domain names, the site owner’s contact details, and DNS records. These are things that typical consumers today don’t search for.

To be fair, there weren’t many websites even after the first one was launched in 1991. For starters, Archie (widely credited as the first search engine) was limited to files and didn’t index their content due to data limitations. Instead, search engines at the time developed the building blocks from which their successors would be built decades later.

One of these was PageRank, the brainchild of then-Stanford University computer science students Sergey Brin and Larry Page. You can read their original paper here in its technical glory, but the gist is that PageRank uses a probability distribution model.

Each page has a PageRank score, and the total score of all pages on the Web can’t exceed 1. Increasing a page’s score occurs in three ways: it receives links from another page, links to said page in return, or both. If this sounds familiar, it’s link building in a nutshell, and the links (later known as backlinks) are a vote of confidence for the page.

Source: Ahrefs

It was later found that PageRank’s initial formula had flaws, particularly the sum of all the PageRank scores going over 1. Standard probability doesn’t permit a result greater than 1 or 100%. If it were, that’s a problem for quantum mechanics now. (1)

Nevertheless, PageRank was years ahead of its time. It formed the heart of Google upon its launch in 1998, a year following PageRank’s creation. It set the tone for the SEO discipline, its practices revolving around content quality and relevance. All of a sudden, practices like link spam and keyword stuffing no longer had a place in search.

Universal Search

Throughout the 2000s, Google added a range of new search features from Images to News. At first, users had to switch from one type of search to the next to use these features. Then, a Eureka moment hit the company: why limit content to just text?

The search engine results page (SERP) underwent a radical change in 2007. In addition to the so-called “blue links,” the page features various forms of relevant content, including images, videos, and news stories. It’s called Universal Search and would have enormous repercussions for SEO and search as a whole.

How? Well, look at it.

The whole page was split because it’s THAT long.

When Google said it wanted to make the world’s information accessible and useful to all, it wasn’t kidding. On the first page, you’re treated to a treasure trove of information. Images, relevant searches, news articles, videos, FAQs, social media posts; everything is just a click away.

But what made this kill SEO at the time was how the top organic result appeared.

It’s nowhere to be found above the fold. Depending on your screen resolution, anyway.

While it wasn’t this content-rich when first introduced, Universal Search put the blue links on the path to obsolescence. As more SERPs received the Universal Search treatment, the organic results were pushed down. What’s stopping users from just clicking on the media above if that’s precisely what they’re looking for?

Another effect is that content is no longer limited to regular webpages. Depending on the search intent, high-ranking results can now be images, videos, or even item listings. SEO for each medium differs, and professionals have to learn all of them.

Panda and Penguin

If you’ve been in the SEO business for a while, you know this was coming. PageRank and Universal Search may have impacted the discipline, but they pale in comparison to these two updates. They basically turned content creation on its head.

The Panda update, released in February 2011, was designed to target low-effort content. In addition to keyword and link spam, it would penalize copy-pasted content and content that added little to no value for the viewer. Site owners were advised to create content the same way journalists and researchers do: citing sources, offering professional insights, etc.

Panda made the bigger splash, affecting close to 12% of all search queries. Two weeks after Panda’s rollout, SEO analytics platform SISTRIX conducted a study that found the biggest losers suffered a search visibility drop of up to 94%. (2)

Source: SISTRIX

Demand Media was among the companies that received a rude awakening. Many of the biggest losers were websites that it owned, causing a USD$6.4 million loss in revenue in 4Q 2011. Its business model involved pumping out thousands of articles daily based on popular keywords, which Google said diluted the quality of search results. (3)

Over a year later, Google introduced its webspam algorithm update, popularly known as Penguin. Whereas Panda cracked down on low-effort content, Penguin hunted down low-quality links. Websites were no longer allowed to build links just to have links; they must also ensure the links are relevant and come from authoritative sources.

Penguin was spread out across six updates, gradually introduced over a four-year timeline. The updates affected 3.1% of English search queries (and 3% of non-English ones), but their impact was just as daunting as Panda. Below is the traffic for a site hit by Penguin. (4)

Source: Search Engine Journal

It was during this time that the phrase “SEO is dead” picked up steam. Up until the rollout of Panda, keyword stuffing and link manipulation—now black-hat practices—were all that most site owners knew. Google was looking ahead with these updates, seeing that search engines would be more relied upon for people’s content needs.

Mobileggedon

The original iPhone was revolutionary for its time, packing the computational power of a desktop PC in the palm of one’s hand. Coupled with the ability to download and install apps from the App Store, it was capable of doing virtually anything. While no data on how many units were sold over its year-long run exists, it nevertheless changed mobile forever.

By the 2010s, smartphones were rapidly becoming the means of mobile communication. While most Americans still used cellphones, the share of smartphones picked up over the decade. Pew’s first survey on smartphone ownership in 2011 recorded a 35% share, but it grew to 91% by the first half of 2024. (5)

Google was right to anticipate the rise of smartphones, but not just for calling and texting. It envisioned a time when mobile users could search for and access content outside their homes, and the smartphone’s versatility could make it happen.

In 2015, Google introduced an algorithm update that favors sites with mobile-friendly versions. Site owners now need a website that’s just as readable and user-friendly on mobile as it is on desktop. The update only affects SERPs for mobile search, which is distinct from conventional search. (6)

The Internet was still reeling from the Panda and Penguin sweep, so some site owners were understandably nervous. However, data from Moz showed that many sites had anticipated the update, with around 70% of first-page results tagged as “mobile-friendly.”

Source: Moz

SEO experts expected “Mobilegeddon,” released on April 21, to hit just as hard as Panda and Penguin did. Despite a few days being hotter than usual, Moz assessed that mobile search temps remained largely stable.

Does this mean there wasn’t anything to kill here? There was.

The update killed the then-prevailing mindset that SEO focused on desktop websites. Many site owners happened to get the memo after Panda and Penguin scared the living daylights out of them. A website that lacks a mobile presence misses out on a major source of leads, which has only grown more true today.

Artificial Intelligence

Finally, we return to the technology responsible for amplifying the “SEO is dead” voices. You can read more about it in my post on AIO, GEO, or LLMO—whatever you guys call it, but the gist is that AI threatens to end organic SEO as we know it.

To which I say, pretty much.

Then again, if you’ve read this far into the article, you should know that AI isn’t primarily to blame. The updates we’ve discussed have already made certain SEO practices unviable. Universal Search killed the blue links, Panda and Penguin killed low-effort content and link building, and mobile-friendly updates killed desktop-centric SEO.

Yet, such practices persist because old habits die hard (plus Google’s core updates can sometimes be vague on the changes). If AI did screw your SEO strategy, either it mostly relied on ineffective shortcuts or you didn’t have one to begin with.

The introduction of AI to search is to make us step up our SEO game. People may no longer click on results or prefer mobile over desktop, but I don’t see search engines going the way of the dodo anytime soon. They’re still used to search for answers; the difference is that the answers come more quickly.

Expect More SEO ‘Deaths’ in the Future

SEO isn’t so much dead as it has already died multiple times. The next ‘death’ may just be around the corner, but phasing out practices won’t kill SEO as a whole. It changes with the user, just as it has always been.

Privacy concerns and hallucinating AI are complicating content creation. Still, AI is poised to be the dominant tool for making content in the future.

Allow me to start today’s topic by defining a term: Catch-22.

American author Joseph Heller coined the term in his eponymous book, Catch-22. It refers to a situation in which the only viable solutions aren’t great. His example features a soldier looking to get out of combat duty. Showing concern for their safety in the line of duty shows that they’re thinking straight, meaning they can’t be discharged on grounds of insanity.

Or what about that meme where “you need experience to get experience?” You’re fresh out of college and in search of a job to gain experience, but companies don’t pick you because you lack experience. There are workarounds, but that isn’t what we’re talking about today.

As explained in my post about SEO’s role in preventing AI model collapse, AI models need lots of quality training data. Chatbots, writing tools, image generators—all these and more rely on existing content to do what they’re designed for.

But in the past few days, content creators and publishers have expressed concern about AI “scraping” their content. Reddit announced that it would block the Wayback Machine from archiving its content except for the homepage. Speaking to The Verge, spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt said the move was made amid privacy concerns.

“Fair enough, let’s find an alternative,” you might think. Technically, there’s another viable source. But as you’ll learn later, that isn’t any better.

How Scraping Works

In her book Web Scraping with Python, software engineer Ryan Mitchell (not to be confused with the mountaineer or actor) defines web scraping as collecting data via any means other than visiting a website yourself. It involves creating an automated program that queries the site’s server, sends a request, and parses the data for extraction.

Mitchell adds that web scraping goes beyond accessing a site or page. A scraping program can go through countless databases, equivalent to millions of pages, at a time. As a result, when you ask an AI-assisted tool for “cheap flights to Boston,” it provides the lowest rates from multiple carriers and even recommends the best time to buy the ticket. (1)

Scraping for AI models is poised for a major boom over the decade. One forecast by Future Market Insights predicts the market value to almost quintuple, from USD$886.03 million in 2025 to USD$4.37 billion in 2035. To hardly anyone’s surprise, increased investment in AI among businesses is seen as the main driver. (2)

The Privacy Dilemma

Reddit’s recent decision may as well be grounded in history. As it turns out, we’ve been dealing with privacy concerns since scraping became a thing.

OpenAI’s GPT line of AI models is notorious for its exponential rate of data consumption. The chart below shows how much data each GPT model has consumed for its training.

The later models dwarf their predecessors so much that they’re barely visible here. While the total parameter count for GPT 5.0 has yet to be publicly disclosed, it’s estimated to be almost 150,000 times more than what was used for developing GPT 1.0. It’s impossible to create state-of-the-art models in a short timeframe without scraping.

However, as innocent as gathering information on the Web may seem, a large portion of it consists of personal data. This data, ranging from profile pictures to personal opinions, is fair game in a model’s eyes, especially if it’ll be used for public benefit. Yet, convincing the public that scraping is a good thing is quite an ask.

As an example, look no further than Clearwater AI’s facial recognition system. Its AI model was designed to help law enforcement agencies identify criminals regardless of the photo or video quality. The company operated in secret until New York Times journalist Kashmir Hill revealed its existence in 2020, including how it trained its model.

Hill’s deep dive into the code revealed that it would be incorporated into augmented reality glasses. All the wearer needed to do was train their gaze on any individual, after which the glasses would display the latter’s info. Clearwater’s facial database, Hill reported, totaled over three billion scraped from various social media platforms and websites.

The potential for misuse was all too clear. Soon, Clearwater faced a class-action lawsuit, and governments around the world enacted policies in response. In June 2024, it agreed to a settlement that involved giving those whose faces are in the database a 23% stake in the company, valued at around USD$52 million at the time. (3)

Despite the danger, legal experts say that scraping continues unabated because of its legal status. One paper described it as existing in a “weird ethical twilight” viewed through two opposing lenses. Some argue that it’s fair game because the data is already on the public Web, whereas others insist that property lines should still be respected. (4)

The Alternative

If web scraping becomes prohibited, is AI model building still possible? Technically, yes.

While scraping is currently widespread, some firms such as Google and Meta train their models using synthetic data. It shares the same properties as its real-world counterpart but without the personal information. A financial or medical record may be replicated, down to the exact individual values, but it doesn’t replicate the record owner’s details.

Synthetic data is poised to be the norm, as recent studies conclude that model building is quickly running out of real-world data. AI analytics firm Epoch predicted that the supply of available human text data will only last between 2026 and 2032 at the rate AI models are consuming data. Overtraining can exhaust that supply much faster. (5)

So, problem solved, right? Well, not quite.

For all the credit we give to AI for being sophisticated, it is far from the utopian technology we expect it to be. There has yet to be a model that can fully grasp and imitate key aspects of human intelligence, namely creativity and nuance. We can’t even keep generative AI from creating one too many fingers or limbs!

I didn’t even generate this. I got it from a stock image site.

Now, imagine current AI models being trained on purely synthetic data. Because the data is created based on real-world data and not directly from real-world conditions, the model tends to “hallucinate” or generate outputs that aren’t grounded in reality. To paraphrase Adam Savage’s iconic Mythbusters quote, the model “rejects reality and substitutes its own.”

Contrary to popular belief, hallucination isn’t necessarily bad. Data scientists say that all AI-generated results are a form of hallucination, but those made using synthetic training data are far more outrageous. Combined with the fact that the hallucination rate goes up with a model’s accuracy, you can see why relying solely on synthetic data isn’t ideal. (6)

The table below shows the accuracy and hallucination rates (H%) of OpenAI’s o-series GPT models. The data is from a study the company conducted last April, which coincided with the release of the GPT o4-mini.

The Pickle (and How to Eat It)

Now that we’ve put the intricacies of AI out of the way, let’s get all our ducks in a row. If you’re like me, who doesn’t rely on AI to create content, you’re fine. In fact, this caliber of content creation may soon be needed to supplement the growing scarcity of quality data.

If you’re among the majority who need AI tools to produce content, the current situation complicates things. With platforms and publishers fighting back against AI infringing on their intellectual properties, future models might be trained on less real-world data and more on synthetic data.

Sure, you can argue that Google doesn’t care whether a human or an AI tool created the content. Gary Illyes said so himself in an interview during the recent Search Central Live. However, on that same interview, he also said this:

“I don’t think that we are going to change our guidelines anytime soon about whether you need to review it or not. So basically, when we say that it’s human, I think the word “human-created” is wrong. Basically, it should be “human-curated.” So basically, someone had some editorial oversight over the content and validated that it’s actually correct and accurate.”

The biggest mistake anyone can make in this case is leaving the entire content creation process to AI. I can’t stress this enough, but AI should augment processes, not replace them entirely. Human oversight is still a must, especially if you produce YMYL content.

Think of it this way: you’ve just been promoted to editor, and AI is the newly hired writer. Don’t let that promotion go to waste. I know I won’t.

Reddit has recently unveiled plans to enter the search engine market by creating its own search engine. Learn here what it means for SEO moving forward.

“Reddit as a search engine? The heck are you talking about?”

This news surprised me when a colleague shared this TechCrunch article, published at the start of August. It reported that, at the company’s recent quarterly conference call, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman presented plans to combine its built-in search and AI-assisted answer features into a full-fledged search engine.

Huffman is bullish on the brand’s “breadth of conversations and knowledge” that no other place on the Web can offer. Being a social media platform with the air of an Internet forum, Reddit is poised to deliver human content amid the rise of AI-generated content. With over 100,000 active subreddits, each with thousands of threads and replies, it’s no surprise. (1)

Although far from being able to take on Google’s dominance of the search engine market for now, Reddit is already making an impact in other ways. SEO is one such area, but first, it’s essential to understand what Reddit really is.

Front Page (Later ‘Heart’) of the Internet

Straight out of college, Huffman and Alexis Ohanian began developing what would become Reddit in 2005. For funding, they pitched their idea to Paul Graham, a co-founder of startup accelerator Y Combinator, who would later describe it as “the front page of the Internet.”

Reddit is the product of two websites, more specifically, certain respective features. One was a social bookmarking website that allowed users to bookmark content, and the other was a “news for nerds” website that had a bustling community. Originally known as Snoo, they opted for Reddit instead due to their limited startup budget. (2)

Through the highs and lows, Reddit grew into one of the most visited websites on the Web. According to Datareportal, its average monthly total visit count ranged from 3.51 to 5.84 billion in 3Q 2024. Meanwhile, the average monthly unique user count ranged from more than 600 million to shy of 1 billion in the same period. (3)

Soon, Reddit’s tagline was changed to the “heart of the Internet.” Billions of pieces of user-generated content (UGC)—subreddits, post replies, and everything in between—that talk just about anything, all in one place. The addition of its own search engine will help make access to desired content more convenient and precise.

A Whole New Ball Game

Reddit’s pursuit of a search engine to rival, if not surpass, Google comes amid the latter’s shift toward AI-generated summaries from traditional search. Businesses and publishers have expressed concern about this move, saying that its AI Overview and AI Mode features are killing clicks and, by extension, traffic to their websites.

A recent Pew study seems to support their claims. Of the 900 U.S. adults surveyed, clicks on search engine results pages (SERPs) with AI summaries accounted for just 8%. Clicks on SERPs without, on the other hand, were almost twice as many. (4)

Naturally, Google was quick to criticize Pew for the results. In a statement to The Register, the company called the study’s methodology flawed and added that the AI experiences are prompting users to ask more questions. That said, this is a topic for another time.

For now, it’s essential to know that Reddit is a vastly different environment from Google. Instead of links to websites, its SERPs may return subreddits or threads. This isn’t out of character, as this is how Google currently indexes Reddit content.

Search results would also be fewer, as Reddit UGC is only a drop in the bucket compared to the number of active websites. They may be arranged similarly to the screenshot above, providing details like the number of thread replies, an excerpt from the most upvoted reply, and links to other relevant threads.

Its AI-assisted feature is Reddit Answers, which Huffman stated is in the process of being made available worldwide. It works similarly to Google’s AI Mode, but its search scope is limited to Reddit content.

But what really gets going is the popularity of Reddit content for training AI. In a study of three widely used AI platforms, AI analytics firm Profound discovered that AI Overviews and Perplexity cited Reddit content the most. In fact, the latter relies on it.

This is the same Perplexity that Huffman called out last year for using Reddit content to train its model without paying. So far, there’s no mention of a deal with the San Francisco-based AI firm (at least not made public). However, the conference mentions the Profound study and highlights the significance of UGC in training future AI models.

New Game, New Rules

Let’s get one thing out of the way first: a new competitor won’t dethrone Google anytime soon. It had decades to set itself as the gold standard of search engines through quality results. Even if Reddit Search (or whatever it’ll be called) enters the market now, Google will remain the preferred choice for many users for years to come.

As such, many parts of the SEO playbook will remain unchanged for a long while. E-E-A-T remains the main criterion for content quality, relevance will still be a factor, and showing author credentials is still encouraged.

Regardless, Reddit’s formal entry into the search engine market will likely shake things up. The website’s nature may introduce new means of performing SEO here, such as:

Compliance with Subreddit Rules

While the website as a whole maintains a set of rules, it also leaves subreddits to create and enforce any additional rules. Most of these maintain a team of moderators, typically taken from the community’s members.

Businesses can create and manage their own subreddits with their own rules (more on this in a bit). However, they may prefer posting content on existing subreddits, especially those with a huge user base. Below are the largest subreddits as of this writing. (5)

r/Funny – 67 million members

r/AskReddit –57 million members

r/gaming – 47 million members

r/worldnews –47 million members

r/todayilearned –41 million members

r/Music –38 million members

r/aww –38 million members

r/movies –37 million members

r/memes –35 million members

r/science –34 million members

Does this mean these are the best places to promote your brand? As long as the content is relevant and doesn’t go against their rules, marketing to the community won’t be an issue. Otherwise, violating the rules is tantamount to disrespecting its members. How can people build trust in a brand that doesn’t consider their sentiments?

Engagement via Comments

As a social media platform with the soul of an online forum, the Reddit community thrives on comments or post replies. A thread that has dozens or hundreds of comments signifies that it’s a hot topic in the community. A comment with a high number of upvotes indicates that other users (and visitors) see sense in the author’s take on the matter.

A popular means of engaging people on Reddit is by hosting an Ask Me Anything (AMA). As the term suggests, an AMA involves an authority on a certain subject answering questions that participating users have. This format is so widespread that Reddit introduced an ad format for it last January, known as AMA Ads.

Source: Reddit for Business

AMAs can also be held on dedicated (e.g., r/IAmA) or niche subreddits, and it’s as simple as creating a thread and replying to comments as they come. Satisfying people’s curiosity is a great way to build a brand image that exudes professionalism and trust, provided their answers show their subject-matter expertise instead of engaging in blatant advertising.

More Time to Formulate Content

When creating content for Google or other search engines, time is usually of the essence. You’d want to get content out as soon as possible to keep up with rapidly changing trends. Posting when the trend has long passed screams “corporate,” which can be a major turn-off among the younger generation of consumers.

This isn’t necessarily the case with Reddit. Users appreciate a slow-cooked comment, as in one that has taken time to develop, even if they have to wait a few days. As I mentioned earlier, this platform thrives on comments and posting rushed answers to valid questions isn’t just pointless but also harmful to the brand.

Of course, there are exceptions like a live AMA. For that, it pays to anticipate questions and formulate responses ahead of time by looking into trends that apply to your niche.

Subreddits Instead of Websites

With the search scope limited to Reddit, its search engine may prompt businesses to set up their respective subreddits. These communities may be centered around the company or one of their products or services. For example, Chinese game developer MiHoYo (doing business as HoYoverse globally) maintains official subreddits for each of its games.

Subreddits offer several advantages over official websites. Besides maintaining a presence within the platform, they also provide a medium for users to discuss topics or share related content. In the example above, users are more likely to remember the name of the product than the company that created it. Also, creating one costs nothing (account required).

They aren’t without their downsides, though. Growing a Reddit community takes time, and the existence of already bustling subreddits makes it an uphill battle. Once they grow large enough, you’ll need to put together a moderator team to uphold the subreddit’s rules.

As such, businesses that can’t spare the time and effort to run a subreddit often choose to post on existing subreddits. While much easier, it isn’t as effective in getting brands out, as it’s competing with others for attention in a more encompassing subreddit. Also, without a subreddit, they miss out on a crucial mode of communication.

Reddit Search Will Shake SEO Up

Realistically speaking, Reddit’s search engine isn’t expected to be a threat to Google in the short term due to the latter’s dominance. That said, its debut will introduce new ways to do SEO on top of the ones already common knowledge.

If the company commits to this in the next few years, we may see the birth of a one-of-a-kind search engine. And the last time that happened was when Google was born.

Recent AI gaffes over the years point to a potential model collapse due to data growing scarce. Luckily, SEO can help avert that.

Over the last several years, we’ve witnessed exponential scaling of AI models. OpenAI’s GPT model is proof of this, with GPT-4 reportedly trained on 1,000 times more training parameters than its predecessor. In fact, across all versions, the model has grown over 15,000-fold in terms of training data usage over its seven-year life.

The numbers are impressive to the untrained eye. But those in the industry see a bleak picture: the amount of data we have right now might not be enough.

Researchers at AI research firm Epoch studied several of the latest large language models (LLMs) and their demand for training data. At the current rate, they predict that the demand will hit the median or match the amount available by 2028. Other experts give a somewhat later estimate, with the supply lasting until 2032. (1)

The industry is scrambling to ensure a steady supply of training data in the future. At one point, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that the chatbots of the future would be advanced enough to rely on synthetic data for training. But as any AI expert will tell you, a model is only as good as the data it works with. (2)

Amid these developments, it’s a bit surprising (though reasonable) that no one’s talking about a potential third solution: good old SEO. Allow me to explain.

The Worst Case Scenario – A Model Collapse

To understand how SEO can become a dark horse in all this, it’s important to know what happens when LLMs inevitably run out of data. Such a situation leads to what AI experts refer to as a “model collapse.”

Think of model collapse as a story that has deviated from the original telling over several generations. The first few times it’s passed down may still get it right, but storytellers will inevitably get some details wrong. By the time it reaches later generations, the story will have been vastly different from how their ancestors told it.

However, the implications of a collapsing model are far worse. Without real-world data to improve its algorithm, it’ll need to be trained on results from its prior versions or another model. The effect extends to future models, resulting in the degradation of the entire line and rendering them ineffective for the task they’re given.

While no recorded incidents of a model collapse have occurred so far, experts point out that the signs are there. In a study presented at a regional Association for Computational Linguistics conference last April, researchers raised safety concerns regarding the use of LLMs, especially those made with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). (3)

Source:An et. al. (2025)

In the data above, most RAG LLMs return responses that feature unsafe responses ranging from illegal activity to misinformation. The factors for such a trend boil down to the design safety of the LLM, the safety of the results it retrieves, and the model’s functionality. (3)

Long story short, you don’t want AI to teach someone how to build a bomb. With a model collapse, however, such a scenario is likely to occur.

Dangerous Implications for Search

AI technology is still far from a point where humans can leave it to its own devices. A quick search will provide countless stories of AI backfiring, from making a list of must-read book titles that don’t exist to generating fictional court cases.

As far as search is concerned, I discussed the implications of AI on modern SEO in a recent blog post. There’s no denying the convenience it brings, providing users with the answers they need without clicking. A recent Pew study confirms this, with less than one-tenth of users clicking on results after checking out the AI-generated summary. (4)

Source:Pew Research Center

Of course, publishers and site owners aren’t happy because it denies them organic traffic. The point of SEO is to let customers know that a business exists through a quick Google (or any search engine) search. Despite blaming AI Overview, the same Pew study revealed that Wikipedia and .gov sites make up most of the links to AI summaries. (4)

However, it’s worth noting that not all users will take the time to check if the AI’s answer is correct. Remember the glue-on-pizza example I mentioned in my post about AI SEO? Let’s delve a bit deeper into that.

As it turned out, Google’s AI retrieved that ridiculous statement from a 12-year-old Reddit comment that was meant as a joke. However, lacking a grasp of the concept of humor, the AI passed it off as fact. And this isn’t an isolated case, as the AI also: (5)

Claimed that Barack Obama was a Muslim (which he isn’t)

Claimed that a dog played in an NHL game (which isn’t true)

Advised consuming one small rock a day (which you shouldn’t)

Outlined the health benefits of bathing with a toaster (which you mustn’t)

Described the health benefits of running with scissors (which you mustn’t)

While you won’t see these gaffes in Google’s search results anymore, they pose a threat to users looking for legitimate answers. Imagine if someone really put a helping of glue (even if it’s non-toxic) on pizza or tried eating a rock (even if it’s rich in minerals). If it results in harm, it won’t just be on the search engine but also the source of the preposterous info.

Where Does SEO Come In?

Avoiding a disaster requires being aware of the risk. Fortunately, the industry is cognizant enough to start developing solutions. In one multi-university study, a potential measure involves combining real and model-generated data to mitigate the risk of degradation and produce better-quality training data. (6)

Source:Gerstgrasser et. al. (2024)

Now we’re cooking with gas!

If synthetic data will be the norm by the next decade, SEO-friendly content creation will need to step up to fill the gap as best it can. It may as well be the models’ only source of real-world data for a long time, if not forever.

Content continues to be one of the trickiest aspects of SEO, not because writing articles and blog posts is hard. The issue lies with determining the kind of content your customer base wants. It won’t matter if your content is worthy of a Pulitzer if it doesn’t answer your customers’ frequently asked questions.

Yet, Google search advocate John Mueller said in a recent Search Off The Record podcast that finding out is as easy as asking them straight up. As long as you don’t appear coercive or daunting, you can find out how a customer found your business or what brought them to your physical or online store. (7)

Once you have your topic, the next step is to write content for your audience. Despite fully embracing AI, Google still maintains human quality raters to determine whether or not the content adheres to its E-E-A-T criteria. Below are some tips according to Google. (8)

Cite high-authority references to support your claims

Refrain from copy-pasting passages from said sources

Offer unique insights, especially if the topic’s been discussed to death

Ensure proper grammar and spelling, and also information accuracy

Provide a brief description of the author’s background and credentials

Link the author bio to the author’s page or social media profile

Avoid writing to appease (or trick) the search engine algorithm

Note that fulfilling E-E-A-T doesn’t directly affect a site’s rankings. However, it helps gain favor with the manual reviewers who assess the content based on said criteria and up its chances of getting cited in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

It’s also worth mentioning that Google says there’s no need for a separate AI SEO strategy for now, as conventional SEO still applies. John Mueller confirmed this during the recent Search Central Live in Bangkok, Thailand, last month. (9)

Augment, Not Replace

Proper SEO is more essential than ever, given that it’ll be relied upon as a primary source of real-world training data. Meeting demand (and preventing an AI model collapse) is possible if every publisher and content creator continues to adhere to SEO best practices.

Marketing circles are abuzz with what marketers claim is the future of search: GEO. Or was it AIO? Maybe AISO? No, it’s probably LLMO.

That’s a lot of acronyms—all of which decided to pop out like daisies just last month.

As if good ol’ search engine optimization (SEO) isn’t already a handful thanks to its strict and ever-changing playbook, AI’s throwing its hat in the ring. While not entirely gone, the days when a brand can rely on ranking at the top of organic search results have changed. As you’ll find out later, the playing field has shifted to the snippets.

Breaking Down the Acronyms

We weren’t kidding when we said these terms suddenly emerged last month. As data from Google Trends shows, interest in AI optimization (AIO) picked up steam at the start of June and reached its peak mid-month.

Data source: Google Trends

It’s hard to pinpoint a specific event responsible for the surge in interest. The next closest thing we can find is BrightEdge’s survey of over 750 marketers, which was also conducted in the same month. While over half of marketers still field SEO or digital marketing teams, over two-thirds are adjusting their strategies to conform to AI technology. (1)

It’s also possible that the shift has been months in the making, only culminating in June. A Bain & Company report last February found that increasing dependence on AI summaries has caused a 15 to 25% drop in website traffic. Forbes confirmed it with a piece published in mid-June, stating that various sites have experienced a 10% decline. (2)(3)

Thanks to AI, search engine technology has advanced to the point where users no longer have to visit a site or page. Snippets and AI summaries supply the information they need. While convenient for users, it impacts businesses’ ability to attract and convert leads.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. First, we have to find out what these acronyms mean.

Artificial Intelligence Optimization (AIO)

AIO is somewhat of a misnomer in this context, as it isn’t necessarily relevant to SEO. The term refers to a discipline concerned with designing digital content to be easily retrievable by large language models (LLMs).

A more relevant term would be AI search optimization (AISO), which designs content to be more visible in AI-powered environments. In Google, these include the AI Overview and AI Mode. These systems work by gathering information from relevant results and formulating easy-to-digest summaries based on the user’s query.

Some experts define AISO as the unification of traditional search engines and AI tools. Think of it as a step above AISEO, which entails optimizing content for AI-driven search engines, and answer search optimization (ASO), which is more focused on structuring content to be more suitable for answer generation. (4)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

As the term suggests, GEO involves creating content to help improve generative AI models by improving their training data. Search features like AI Overview are made with generative AI, a widely used AI model that organizes large amounts of data to create new content from scratch (hence the term “generative”).

Understanding GEO requires a good grasp of how a generative engine works. Every time a user submits a query, it undergoes a series of steps (each of which has its own model). (5)

Query reformulation: Modifies the original query to better match the wording in potential sources of information.

Search reinitialization: Restarts a search but uses the modified query to return more accurate search results.

Summarization: Generates a summary of each relevant source in preparation for formulating the desired output.

Response generation: Collates the generated summaries to create a response that’s then delivered to the user.

GEO is sometimes referred to as generative AI optimization (GAIO).

Large Language Model Optimization (LLMO)

An LLM is a type of AI model designed to train itself to deliver more human-like responses. LLMs are how search engines can return accurate results when users submit queries as if they were asking a live person. For example, asking the search engine “what are the best shoes for a casual walk” returns recommendations from stores with an online presence.

LLMO focuses more on establishing authority in your industry or niche. Some approaches include citing reliable sources for claims and figures, quoting subject-matter experts, and providing first-hand experience. In a way, Google’s E-E-A-T framework comes to mind.

Don’t worry if all these terms sound similar. The industry is still figuring out how best to use AI to advance SEO, and a universal playbook has yet to be formulated. That said, getting a clear picture as early as now will be beneficial in the long run.

The relationship among these processes looks somewhat like this:

The Fight for the Snippets

Amid their differences, AIO and its disciplines share one thing in common. Their rise in the industry signifies a shift in the SEO landscape, namely in terms of where the fight for digital dominance now takes place.

The focus has shifted from the top spot in search results to snippets. Located above the top organic result (sometimes below, depending on the query), snippets are a quick and convenient way to deliver the requested information to users.

Featured snippets, as Google calls them, aren’t new. Their predecessors, known as quick answer boxes, were introduced in 2013. However, they weren’t as cutting-edge as they are now, as they would often show content from the top or high-ranked result word for word. In some queries (e.g., age, height, weight), the answer would consist of one or a few lines.

Over the years, Google has integrated new technologies into this nifty feature. While most queries still show Featured Snippets, a growing number are showing AI Overviews. Despite the risk of clicking links being a thing of the past, Google pointed out that AI Overviews are designed to provide a “jumping off point” for users to explore further.

This is evident not only in the hyperlinks on the Overview but also in the list of results next to it. Users can choose whether to be satisfied with the summary or learn more by visiting the AI’s handpicked sources.

The most significant implication of this shift is in the snippet’s positioning. Anyone who’s been doing SEO for the longest time should know that the first few results get most of the clicks. With the likes of AI Overview, attention has all but moved away from the top-ranked organic result because, well, it’s no longer at the top.

You can take consolation in the fact that less than half of searches that trigger AI Overview result in zero clicks, according to a study by SEMrush. Also, as of March 2025, queries that trigger AI Overview only make up 13% of all queries. (6)

This is no reason to be complacent, as that figure is 72% higher than in February 2025 and 102% higher than at the start of the year. And if we know AI, the fraction of such keywords will only go up moving forward. (6)

The Age-Old Question: ‘Is SEO Finally Dead?’

As AI gradually meshes with digital marketing, we find ourselves asking that one question that seemingly refuses to die: “Is SEO finally dead?” Answering with a yes or no won’t do it justice, so here’s the long answer.

SEO as We Knew It Will Die

It’s worth remembering that SEO has been killing practices and principles since it was first used. One noteworthy example is keyword stuffing, which prevailed around the early 2000s before being outlawed by Google’s content-focused updates.

The rise of AI is no different, with some ideas and processes on the chopping block—or at least on their way there. For instance, search engine results pages (SERPs) are believed to be on their way out thanks to AI Overview. If anything, the so-called “ten blue links” were already made obsolete 15 years ago. (7)

Keyword optimization remains a viable practice, but it must now adapt to natural language processing used by LLMs. Expect more queries to be formed as questions like “how old is the oldest man alive” or “how to install new plumbing.” Optimizing tomorrow’s content for such a scenario is one of the major hurdles.

SEO as a Whole is Still Alive

Despite all this, SEO isn’t going the way of the dodo bird just yet. In fact, SEO can never truly die as long as the world still needs search engines. Perhaps we’ll be using the term “AISO” or “GEO” more often, but it’s SEO evolved at the end of the day.

Another reason for this is related to Google Ads, its pay-per-click (PPC) service. As AI Overviews would take up space reserved for paid ads, Google later integrated ads into the generated summaries. The company is in no rush to retire its proprietary search engine, let alone its PPC service that’s predicted to make over USD$340 billion globally by 2027. (8)

If you need a third reason, I’ve got three words: glue on pizza.

Source: @petergyang on X

AI, in its current state, still has plenty of kinks, not the least of which is not realizing that glue is NOT food. This example should serve as a cautionary tale to users to look before they leap, as in to check for accuracy before passing information off as truth. AI models will become more practical over time, but we can’t leave the heavy lifting to them for now.

The TLDR on AIO, GEO…

Whatever you call it, AIO (or AISO, GEO, LLMO) is poised to revolutionize SEO rather than replace it. The recent surge in interest is proof that AI is here to stay, and brands can only adapt to the new reality.

Why Publisher Quality Matters

A successful link-building strategy hinges on one crucial factor: the quality of the websites you earn links from. Low-quality or spammy sites can undermine your search engine optimization (SEO) efforts, while high-quality publishers can significantly boost your visibility and authority.

Over the years, many SEO professionals and clients have asked: “How can I quickly identify a credible publisher for link building?” To address this, we developed a 12-Point Publisher Checklist—a framework that outlines the essential criteria for evaluating and selecting reputable publishers. In this post, we’ll walk you through these 12 points to help you improve the quality of your own link-building campaigns.

<span data-ccp-props="{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"134245418":false,"134245529":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":0,"335551620":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}">

We’ve always been dedicated to delivering the best possible results for our clients. But one recurring question kept coming up: “How do I know if this publisher is good?” Clients wanted a clear, consistent way to asses publishers and make sure they are getting real value from their link-building efforts.<span data-ccp-props="{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"134245418":false,"134245529":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":0,"335551620":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}">

Our 12-Point Publisher Checklist

Below is a snapshot of the criteria we use to ensure each publisher is credible, relevant, and beneficial for long-term SEO success. Use these guidelines to build your own checklist or to evaluate any potential publishing partner.

Verified Business, News, or Blog Website
A legitimate website will typically have a clear mission, consistent branding, and genuine content. Look for a transparent “About Us” page, a cohesive layout, and indicators that the site is actively maintained.

Authentic Contact Information
A credible publisher will list real contact details. This demonstrates accountability and fosters trust. Anonymous or hard-to-reach site owners can be a red flag.

No “Write for Us” Pages or Paid Link Advertisements
Websites that openly advertise link sales or guest posts often attract spammy or low-quality contributions. Search engines may devalue links from these sources, making them risky for your SEO.

Do-Follow Links Only
Do-follow links pass authority (or “link juice”) to your site. Ensure that any agreement you make includes do-follow links rather than no-follow or sponsored attributes.

No Mentions of Sponsored or Paid Content
The most effective links appear naturally within the content. Overtly labeling links as “sponsored” or “paid” can reduce their SEO value and may signal search engines that the link is promotional.

Niche-Relevant, SEO-Optimized Content
Relevance is key to effective link building. Make sure the publisher’s content relates to your industry or topic and follows on-page SEO best practices (proper headers, keyword usage, etc.).

Minimum Domain Rating (DR) & Domain Authority (DA) of 20
Domain metrics like DR (Ahrefs) and DA (Moz) are common ways to gauge a site’s overall authority. While these metrics aren’t the only factor to consider, ensuring a baseline of at least 20 can help you avoid very low-authority sites.

Minimum Ahrefs Traffic of 500
A publisher should have tangible monthly traffic—at least 500 visitors—so your link stands a better chance of being seen and clicked.

Stable Traffic Patterns
Check traffic history for sudden drops or long-term declines of over 50%. A massive, unexplained decline might indicate a penalty or other issues that could harm your link’s value.

Verified Ownership (No Brokers)
Work directly with recognized site owners to avoid hidden fees, spammy networks, or other intermediaries that could compromise quality and transparency.

Guaranteed 12-Month Placement
High-quality publishers will commit to keeping your link live for a reasonable period. Aim for at least 12 months to ensure your content has time to gain traction in search results.

No Orphaned Posts
Each published article should be internally linked to relevant pages within the site, which helps both users and search engines discover and index your content.

Key Benefits of a Rigorous Vetting Process

Long-Term SEO Value: High-quality links stand the test of time and are less likely to be devalued by search engines.

Better Brand Authority: Associating your brand with credible publishers can improve brand perception and recognition.

Reduced Penalty Risks: Search engines routinely penalize sites associated with link schemes. A stringent checklist helps avoid that.

Improved ROI: When you focus on link quality rather than sheer quantity, your investments in SEO tend to yield more sustainable, higher-impact returns.

<span data-ccp-props="{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"134245418":false,"134245529":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":0,"335551620":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}">

Final Thoughts

Link building can be a powerful tool in your SEO strategy—but only if done responsibly. By focusing on the 12-Point Publisher Checklist, you ensure each placement is credible, relevant, and offers long-lasting value. Whether you choose to build links manually or work with professional services, applying these guidelines will help you avoid penalties, strengthen your site’s authority, and bolster your search rankings over the long haul.

If you’re ready to fine-tune your link-building efforts, consider adopting these criteria into your workflow. By holding every publisher to the same high standards, you’ll set yourself up for consistent, high-quality SEO results.

Let’s talk about why having a solid, actionable SEO strategy is the key to dominating your niche. Over the years, my brother Aaron and I have worked with countless clients, helping them grow their businesses through strategic SEO. But we’ve noticed something—many people still underestimate the power of a documented plan. They… Continue reading Why Your Business Needs an SEO Strategy (And How We Proved It Works)

<, we organized our content around pillar pages and supporting blog posts.

For example:

– Pillar Page: “Timber Fencing Services in Melbourne”

– Supporting Blog Post: “How Much Does a Timber Fence Cost in Australia?”

This approach helps search engines understand the relationship between your content, boosting your topical authority. It also ensures that your content serves a purpose—whether it’s attracting new visitors, answering customer questions, or driving conversions.

Even the best content won’t rank if your website has technical issues. That’s why we perform a comprehensive technical audit to identify and fix problems like:

– Slow page speed

– Poor mobile responsiveness

– Broken links

– Inefficient URL structures

Why Indexing Matters

When a link (or page) is “indexed” by Google, it means Google’s bots have visited, analyzed, and added that content into its massive search database. Essentially, indexing is the gateway to appearing in search results. If your backlinks aren’t indexed:

Google can’t see them, making it less likely for your site to benefit from those links.

Your ranking potential decreases because unindexed links provide no SEO value.

You lose visibility, which ultimately impacts traffic and conversions.

In short, unindexed backlinks are invisible to Google’s ranking algorithm, making them far less valuable.

Our Journey: From 33% to 7% No-Index

Initial Observations

Many companies that build backlinks will tell you:

“We don’t own Google, so we can’t guarantee if a link gets indexed.”

That’s true—but there’s a big “but.” You can influence the likelihood of a link getting indexed by focusing on where and how it’s placed. For instance, make sure the site you’re placing your link on is already indexed.

After Google’s March update, we removed 1,045 websites from our marketplace because they had been deindexed. That discovery made us ask: “How can we do better?” Below are our month-by-month results, showing how many of our sold links didn’t get indexed.

Month

% Not Indexed

January

33%

February

31%

March

28%

April

27%

May

16%

June

11%

July

7%

As you can see, we reduced our no-index rate from 33% to 7%. Now, we’re aiming to get that number below 5%.

We analyzed 27,689 links in total and uncovered several interesting trends:

Large News Websites
Big names like USA Today or The New York Times sometimes have worse indexing rates. Their massive content volume means Google may selectively index backlinks it considers most relevant.

Cost Doesn’t Guarantee Indexing
High-priced placements aren’t always indexed better—especially when those sites churn out content at scale. This issue may have been exacerbated by the recent influx of AI-generated content.

AI-Supported Content
Surprisingly, AI-generated articles often get indexed faster. Quality content is quality content, regardless of how it’s produced, and Google seems to treat it as such.

Multi-Niche News Websites
These typically performed the worst, both in terms of being deindexed entirely and struggling to get new posts indexed.

Client-Supplied Content
About half of our remaining unindexed links in July came from clients who provided their own content.

Steps We Took to Boost Indexing

1. Real Keyword Research

Previously, we were choosing “great topics” without considering search intent or traffic potential. Now, we:

Identify traffic-driving keywords with real search volume.

Align new content with user intent to increase relevance.

Today, we have over 166,456 keywords ranking across our backlinks—proof that targeting specific keywords works.

2. Optimized Metadata

Small details can make a big difference:

Page Titles, H1s, and H2s: We provide these to publishers and ensure they use them.

Description Tags & Alt Text: We include relevant descriptors and alt tags to guide Google’s indexing.

3. Intelligent Recommendations

We use a specialized recommendation system that:

Analyzes term frequency for each article.

Suggests related keywords to include.

Offers tips on sentiment, readability, and word count.

This fine-tuning increases the likelihood that Google will index and rank each page.

4. Supporting Links

We encourage publishers to link older articles to our newly created content. Internal links send strong signals to search engines that the new page is important and relevant within the site’s ecosystem.

5. No Extra Cost

We provide all these services—research, metadata, recommendation tools, and internal linking advice—at no additional charge. We believe in continuously improving our product without always passing the cost onto clients.

How to Check If Your Backlinks Are Indexed

There are two primary methods I use to check if a link is indexed, and the first backlink checker is completely free and straightforward. If you’re not already using Google search operators, you’re missing out on a wealth of valuable information.

The simplest way to see if a linking page is indexed is by using the `site:` operator in Google search.

<colgroup>
<col />
<col />
<col /></colgroup>

What

Why

Example

site:

Search for results from a particular website.

site:https://nobsmarketplace.com/blog/robots-txt-beginners-guide/

The Second is to use a tool. Personally, I like using SE Ranking for bulk checking as it’s faster, and to be honest, it has the best data, and it’s cheap. This helps us with the indexing process. Here’s a rundown of how to do it in SE Ranking:

How to Find and Use the Index Status Checker

Click the Research icon in the side menu, then select Index Status Checker from the submenu. The results page will show you the indexing status of the URLs you specify. You can export this data in .XLS or .CSV formats.

Choose the search engine you want to check—Google, Yahoo, or Bing.
Enter the list of URLs you want to check using the URL inspection tool or manually input them.

If you want to check if your website URL is in the search engine cache, check the relevant box and enter the website URL in the pop-up field.

Click Submit to start the check. Depending on the system’s workload, it can take up to 10 minutes.

By clicking “Yes” or “No” in the “In index” column, you will see the SERP for this URL. If you’ve specified a domain, the results will show all the search index pages for that website within this search engine. If you’ve specified the URL of a particular page, you will see information about the indexing status for this page only.

Why We’re Transparent & Always Learning

It’s crucial for us to share real data about indexing. Backlinking has been clouded by misinformation—some articles simply swap “page” for “backlink” and call it a day. By sharing our exact numbers, we hope to contribute real insights to the SEO community.

We’re continually testing new strategies, monitoring algorithm changes, and adapting our workflows. In the world of SEO, what worked yesterday might not work tomorrow—so staying nimble is key.

Summing Up

Our team’s hard work over the last six months has led to a remarkable drop in no-index backlinks—from 33% down to 7%. This translates into better visibility and stronger results for our clients. That said, we’re not stopping here. We’ll keep collaborating with publishers, refining our approach, and sharing our findings.

Remember:

Indexing is the foundation of effective SEO.

Simple steps like keyword research, metadata optimization, and internal linking make a huge difference in whether Google notices (and values) your content.

Consistent monitoring ensures you can catch no-index issues early and tackle them head-on.

If you have questions or feedback about our study and methods, feel free to reach out—we love talking SEO and helping others improve their backlinks.
