Given how few first-person videogames make a successful transition to the big screen, it’s surprising how easy Genki Kawamura‘s “Exit 8” makes it look. But perhaps the key to not losing much in translation is not having much to lose in the first place. The concept of popular walking game “The Exit 8,” from developers Kotake Create, is so spartan as to be practically monastic. You are lost in a labyrinthine, overlit, Japanese metro tunnel, and the only way to find your way out of its Escher-like infinity-loop construction is to spot its “anomalies” — tiny, deliberate deviations from the previously established norm.

While comparisons to cult sci-fi “Cube” are inevitable, “Exit 8” is simpler, cleaner and less bothered by reasoning out the premise. Instead, the trick here is that, absent the first-person dimension, Kawamura and co-writer Kentaro Hirase add a psychological component to the third-person storytelling. Here, the protagonist’s predicament is cued by his being at a turning point in his life, or rather, because this is “Exit 8,” a turning and turning and turning again point.

Our hero, only ever referred to as the Lost Man (J-pop star Kazunari Ninomiya in a nicely judged rumpled-everyman performance), is on the train when he witnesses an overbearing businessman harassing a young mother about her crying baby and fails to intervene. Soon after, he alights and takes a call from his ex, who is pregnant and awaiting his thoughts on what to do about it. So he’s plunged into worry, and it takes him a while to notice that suddenly he’s alone in a rectilinear nightmare of white-tiled underground passageways, courtesy of Ryo Sugimoto’s sadistically sharp production design, and that following the bland yellow signage toward the exit will eventually always end him up back where he began.

Actually, Lost Man is not quite alone; a slender man carrying a briefcase (Yamato Kochi) walks impassively by him at the same moment each time he arrives in one of the corridors. And later, other wanderers also appear, but his interactions with them are stilted, as though they are non-playing characters (NPCs). As in the game, the only active choice the Lost Man can make, therefore, is to move forward or double back, and soon a poster appears telling him how to exercise that limited free will. Whenever he spots an anomaly, he should reverse course. If nothing’s amiss, he should continue, and this way he will successfully navigate the eight levels and make it to an actual exit. Get it wrong, however, and it resets back to the start and all his progress is undone.

Operating on the same catchy principle that drives a thousand hidden-object or spot-the-difference games, now we, along with the Lost Man, start to obsessively parse each frame for potential deviations. Were the subway posters in that same order last time? Did that door always sit between two air vents? Why is Walking Man suddenly Standing Man, and when did he start wearing that ghastly smile?

There is a matter-of-factness to DP Keisuke Imamura’s flat, bright images that creates a hyperreal eeriness all the more uneasy for being the polar opposite of a horror movie’s usual dark corners and shadowy depths. And editor Sakura Seya does a briskly efficient job of making the metro-corridor Moebius strip feel not only plausible, but solidly real, with only some later developments allowing for any variation in shot style or rhythm.

But at just the point when we might be starting to get a little restless with Lost Man’s erratic progress, Kawamura makes his most daring narrative leap by suddenly switching protagonists — perhaps all those NPCs were not actually NPCs at all, but other “players” trapped in the same psychological and physical limbo for different, uniquely personal reasons. All those reasons, however, have a moral or ethical dimension, which in some cases leads to quite touching developments that in their way further illuminate Lost Man’s own quandary.

That’s not to overstate the depth or emotive nature of a fun little ride that uses broad-brush psychology as an excuse for an elegant puzzle-box that, once solved, does not require further thought. Like the game, which is popular as kind of a one-off without much replayability, “Exit 8” is designed to divert for a short time and does so enjoyably, with Kawamura proving a most judicious assessor of just how little backstory, plot explanation and character development he can get away with and still keep us engaged. But while it doesn’t pretend to some grand philosophy, the movie’s sparseness does give it some mileage as an allegory for how changing things up is the only way to break a cycle of destructive, circular thinking. In a time of increasingly inescapable groupthink and conformity, “Exit 8” wants you to embrace the anomaly.

Pierre Balmain was one of the earliest designers to grasp the power of celebrity in fashion. The French couturier built close relationships with the superstars of his era, dressing them for the stage and screen — a legacy that continues under the house’s current creative director, Olivier Rousteing.

When Balmain launched his namesake house in post-war Paris, he introduced a waist-cinched silhouette that quickly became a favorite among the celebrity set. He dressed icons such as Josephine Baker, Brigitte Bardot, Katharine Hepburn and Sophia Loren, helping define the visual language of 20th-century fame.

Baker became a longtime collaborator, with Balmain designing elaborate, symbolic and glamorous ensembles for her film and stage performances. One standout was the 1951 “Four Seasons” gown, paired with a velvet jacket featuring a dramatically tall collar. Their partnership endured until her final show in 1975, cementing her image as a fashion icon.

Balmain also collaborated with Bardot on several films. For “Her Bridal Night,” he created a layered tulle wedding gown with floral appliqués. “And God Created Woman” showcased Bardot’s carefree persona in jumpsuits and feminine dresses, while “Love Is My Profession” introduced pencil skirts, wrap coats and signature LBDs.

Though Audrey Hepburn is most closely associated with Givenchy, she wore Balmain for her 1954 wedding to Mel Ferrer, choosing a tea-length dress with a satin sash, ballgown sleeves and high collar.

For Katharine Hepburn, Balmain designed the wardrobe for the 1952 West End production of “The Millionairess,” including an embroidered gown with matching beaded gloves. When the film was remade in 1960 starring Sophia Loren, Balmain again took the reins, designing a pink dress with extravagant jewelry that married cinematic elegance with star power.

His Hollywood connections continued with Jane Fonda, who wore Balmain in the 1964 thriller “Joy House,” adding Riviera glamour to the film’s intrigue.

Balmain’s deeply personal, long-running collaboration with French superstar Dalida produced many of her most memorable stage and film looks — from the dramatic black velvet and gold Lurex cape ensemble worn in her 1983 Montreal concert to the ethereal white “Ziberline” gown of 1973.

In a tribute, Dalida once said: “Pierre Balmain, for me, was life in pink, in silk, in lace — and sometimes in rhinestones.”

Several of her Balmain designs were later exhibited at Paris’ Palais Galliera in a 2017 retrospective show.

From the ’60s through the ’80s, Balmain also designed extensively for Queen Sirikit of Thailand, creating more than two decades’ worth of royal daywear and evening gowns — many combining Western silhouettes with modern Thai silk. These pieces are now preserved at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles in Bangkok.

The Rousteing Era

Olivier Rousteing has inherited and evolved Balmain’s celebrity tradition, crafting red-carpet and arena-concert looks for a new generation of stars while forming his own “Balmain Army” of models and influencers.

One of the first luxury designers to use social media like a digital native, Rousteing embraced Instagram early on. He saw its potential not only as an advertising platform, but as a cultural divining rod to point to music trends and overall generational shifts. He has used social media to stay ahead of the curve by understanding the cultural moment before it happens.

He coined the term “Balmain Army” to describe his collective of models, musicians, actors and influencers who represent the brand. It became a cultural movement representing diverse beauty and style.

His vision merges high fashion with mass media, often blurring the line between runway and pop spectacle.

In 2022, Rousteing made headlines by bringing Cher onstage to close his stadium show — open to the public, in a bold move that merged fashion week with festival energy. It was a full-circle moment in Balmain’s longstanding relationship with music legends.

At the 2018 American Music Awards, Taylor Swift wore a futuristic Balmain minidress and thigh-high boots paired with snake jewelry — a look that shattered her “princess” image and aligned perfectly with her rebellious “Reputation” era.

For the 2022 Grammys, Rousteing worked with Lil Nas X on a fully custom Balmain wardrobe, including red carpet, stage and even backstage loungewear — showcasing the house’s boundary-pushing vision.

But no modern collaboration has been more significant than Rousteing’s ongoing partnership with Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, whom he calls his “forever muse.” Their creative relationship began during her “Formation” tour and reached a peak at Coachella 2018, when Rousteing designed the wardrobe for Knowles-Carter and her 200-plus dancers and musicians. The performance, dubbed “Beychella,” became a fashion and cultural milestone.

In 2023, they deepened their collaboration with a 17-look couture collection, codesigned by Rousteing and Knowles-Carter as a tribute to both her musical journey and the Balmain archive. The looks debuted at the Grammys and Brit Awards and have already been cemented as major fashion moments.

A master of media and timing, Rousteing has an instinct for choosing the right celebrity at the right moment. He doesn’t just rely on established A-listers, he often works with talents before their big breakthroughs, which in turn helps create them.

Case in point: Tyla’s sculptural Balmain gown at the 2024 Met Gala — a body-hugging wet look crafted to resemble poured sand — fit the “Garden of Time” theme, but rather than an expected floral, he approached it with a new twist. It immediately went viral and became a defining moment for the rising singer to cement herself as a fashion force.

The following year, Jenna Ortega wore a Balmain creation made from silver tailoring tape and metallic rulers, an avant-garde nod to the artistry of couture construction. The look was clever and played up both the young actress’ star potential and her willingness to take risks just as she was emerging as a red carpet wild card.

What sets Rousteing apart is his sense of cultural timing, his instinct to see stars as storytellers and his ability to anticipate the culture, not just follow a trend, to carry forth the house of Balmain.

Reese Witherspoon opened up about exiting the 2014 thriller “Gone Girl” while the film was in development. At the time, Witherspoon had been attached to star in the adaptation as Amy Elliott Dunne, receiving approval from author Gillian Flynn and shepherding the project through her production company, now called Hello Sunshine. However, once director David Fincher came aboard, he decided against casting her in the role.

“David sat me down — and this is not on David — but David’s like, ‘You’re totally wrong for this part, and I’m not putting you in it,’” Reese said, speaking on Wednesday’s episode of the “Las Culturistas” podcast. “I had all these conversations with the writer Gillian Flynn, and she was like, ‘No, I’d really like you to do it.’ … But [Fincher] was like, ‘You’re wrong.’”

The tricky role ended up going to Rosamund Pike, who led the dark romantic comedy with Ben Affleck. The thriller proved a breakthrough for Pike, who scored her first Academy Award nomination for the film, landing a nod for best actress. The film was also a box office hit; at $369 million worldwide, it ranks as the highest-grossing release of Fincher’s career.

“That was, first of all, an ego check for me,” Witherspoon recalled about her conversation with Fincher. “It was like, ‘No, you’re not right for everything.’ And he was right. He was totally right. … Fincher just killed it. And Rosamund Pike is so diabolical and Ben Affleck is sort of the rube on the other side of it.”

Witherspoon ended up scoring a best actress Oscar nomination that same year anyways, leading the biopic “Wild” from her soon-to-be “Big Little Lies” director Jean-Marc Vallée. Witherspoon produced both “Wild” and “Gone Girl.” Now, she is starring in the fourth season of “The Morning Show,” which debuted its premiere on Apple TV+ on Wednesday.

At Lancôme, making the world more beautiful transcends physical appearance.

In sync with its core aim of caring for people and the planet for a happier, more sustainable future, the brand has instigated numerous initiatives — ranging from refillable products to improving literacy to empowering women with disabilities.

This has long been a core tenet. In 2021, Lancôme unveiled its first global sustainability program, then called “Caring Together for a Happier Tomorrow,” which emphasizes biodiversity and inclusion. That dovetails with L’Oréal’s long-term sustainability commitment that includes reducing its environmental footprint and offering consumers more eco-friendly options.

Lancôme’s initiative was built on protecting biodiversity, helping people to consume sustainably and empowering women. “Care and happiness are in the DNA of the brand,” said former global brand president Françoise Lehmann.

Lancôme’s sustainability program sets out to protect biodiversity, including agricultural practices, eco-conscious formulas and packaging, partnerships with institutions, and using green science and biotechnology.

Lancôme works to reduce its environmental footprint through its entire value chain, including product formulas and packaging. It’s powered by green science and aims for safer, high-performance products using fewer resources, ingredient circularity, innovative reformulation and responsible sourcing.

Today, 59 percent of Lancôme ingredients are biosourced or come from circular processes. Seventy-eight percent of its skin care ingredients are biodegradable, as are 93 percent of its fragrance ingredients.

Packaging-wise, Lancôme focuses on refillable formats; lightweighting and minimizing volume, and replacing virgin materials with recycled ones.

Six years ago, the brand pinpointed its 20 products with packaging causing the worst environmental impact. By 2023, they’d all been redesigned. And since last year, all products are eco-designed.

This year, Lancôme took part in L’Oréal’s multichannel activation, called #JoinTheRefillMovement, which launched June 16 for World Refill Day. It was meant to raise awareness of refills’ benefits. For instance, each time someone purchases a 100-ml. refill, rather than two 50-ml. bottles of La vie est belle Elixir, there’s a savings of 73 percent on glass, 66 percent on plastic and 61 percent on cardboard.

Lancôme has a range of refillable fragrances.

Such changes pack a punch. In the U.S., La vie est belle Eau de Parfum is now the top-ranking women’s refillable perfume, reports Circana. Lancôme also places first among refillable skin care in the country.

Lancôme’s women’s empowerment initiative, which fights inequality through education, is called Write Your Future. It provides women with access to literacy, mentoring and entrepreneurship. The program is developed on a country-by-country basis, albeit with the same fundamental mission: women’s leadership and independence.

In the U.S., it was introduced in 2019 in partnership with ProLiteracy. In 2022, Lancôme teamed with ACT-SO Youth Program, a division of the NAACP. Forty college-bound Black women were awarded $10,000 scholarships annually.

Since launch, Write Your Future has rolled out to 23 countries, with more than 6 million euros donated to NGOs and over 265,000 women directly supported.

Lancôme’s other responsible actions include raising $5.3 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., with funding supporting more than 3,600 chemotherapy rounds and contributing to the World Health Organization’s pediatric cancer initiative.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Lancôme introduced a worldwide solidarity program for nurses. Through the Lancôme Cares initiative, the brand donated more than 200,000 care packs of products in 23 countries.

Lancôme beauty is inclusive, and that cascades into its tech devices, too. At CES in Las Vegas in 2023, it unveiled a prototype of Hapta to expand access to beauty expression. According to L’Oréal, approximately 50 million people globally live with limited fine-motor skills, and 15 percent have a disability making makeup application more challenging.

Hapta, an ultra-precise computerized handheld, was created specifically for people with limited hand and arm mobility. It is an industry first, and meant to give confidence and autonomy in beauty rituals.

The tech at the heart of the prototype was developed by Verily to hold and stabilize eating utensils using magnets and articulation. The device has real-time motion stabilization, as well as ergonomic, inclusive design.

It was piloted by Lancôme as a lipstick applicator first, and is scheduled to be expanded into other makeup applications. A standout at CES and one of Time Magazine’s best inventions of 2023, it will be available globally in January.

In the U.S., Lancôme beta-tested the device in collaboration with the Paralyzed Veterans of America, or PVA. That partnership was celebrated countrywide in-store on International Women’s Day 2025, and in October, Lancôme is to sponsor PVA’s Women Veterans Empowerment Retreat.

Singapore has tapped “Stranger Eyes” as its official submission for the 98th Academy Awards‘ best international feature film category, the Singapore Film Commission has revealed.

The surveillance thriller, written and directed by Yeo Siew Hua, made history as the first Singaporean film selected for the main competition at the Venice Film Festival, where it world premiered at the 81st edition. The atmospheric psychological drama explores themes of surveillance, grief and identity.

This marks Yeo’s second Oscar submission following “A Land Imagined,” which won the Golden Leopard at Locarno and represented Singapore in 2018.

“It’s a real honor to represent Singapore again for a second time since my previous film,” said Yeo. “Thank you to all who have given me this opportunity to explore how we are looking at each other through this film. It is important to keep our stories alive and to continue to tell stories that matter.”

“Stranger Eyes” is an international co-production involving companies from Singapore, Taiwan, France and the U.S., including Akanga Film Asia, Volos Films, Films de Force Majeure and Cinema Inutile. Following Venice, the film opened both the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and Singapore International Film Festival in 2024. Playtime handles international sales, while Film Movement is releasing in the U.S.

The production received support from the Infocomm Media Development Authority and Singapore Film Commission under the Media Talent Progression program.

Producer Fran Borgia of Akanga Film Asiasaid: “We started developing ‘Stranger Eyes’ 10 years ago and couldn’t have achieved this great privilege to be Singapore’s Oscars representative without the belief and support of the IMDA and SFC as well as our coproduction partners. We’re proud that a multinational film like ‘Stranger Eyes,’ reflecting Singapore’s precious diversity, can showcase our nation’s plurality on the world stage.”

Yvonne Tang, assistant chief executive at IMDA, highlighted the film’s international reach, noting it has screened in over 10 territories and reflects the growing strength of Made-with-Singapore productions alongside nine other films that premiered at major festivals including Cannes, Toronto and Busan this year.

Most BOJ watchers expect authorities to lift the benchmark interest rate by January

[TOKYO] Japan’s two-year government bonds fell, pushing yields to the highest level since 2008, tracking moves in the US ahead of the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) policy decision.

The two-year yield, which is sensitive to monetary policy expectations, climbed 0.5 basis points to 0.885 per cent. Yields also climbed in the US overnight following weekly employment data that cast doubt on the outlook for further reductions this year after the US Federal Reserve cut interest rates this week by 25 basis points.

In addition to the moves in the US, “selling may be emerging from those betting on a hawkish tone ahead of Governor Kazuo Ueda’s press conference, even though he’s expected to be cautious”, said Kazuhiko Sano, chief strategist at Tokai Tokyo Securities.

The move comes ahead of the BOJ’s policy decision on Friday (Sep 19), where it’s widely expected to hold rates steady, with the market focused on any clues about a move next month or in December. The increase in yields on shorter-maturity debt coincides with rising yields for longer-dated debt, which is being driven by concerns about inflationary expectations as Japan’s government faces pressure to raise spending and reduce taxes.

The outlook is clouded amid uncertainty over tariffs as well as political risks after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced his plans to step down. Still, BOJ officials are of the view that it may be possible to raise the benchmark interest rate again this year, regardless of political instability, as economic conditions have developed in line with expectations, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Japan’s government bonds have lost 4 per cent so far this year and underperformed all of their global peers, according to Bloomberg data that track more than 40 markets and exclude currency fluctuations.

Most BOJ watchers expect authorities to lift the benchmark interest rate by January, with the proportion picking next month as the likely timing edged down after Ishiba’s resignation, according to a Bloomberg survey. Overnight index swaps show about a 58 per cent chance of a rate hike by the BOJ by the end of the year.

Ahead of Ueda’s press conference, Sanae Takaichi, a conservative hardliner known for supporting aggressive monetary easing and fiscal spending, will also unveil her policy agenda at 2.30 pm on Friday in Tokyo. This comes a day after formally declaring her intention to run for the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that the BOJ is falling behind the curve in addressing inflation, in a rare admonishment of policy decisions by a foreign central bank. BOJ governor Kazuo Ueda also said last month that he expects a tight labour market to keep upward pressure on wages in remarks at the Fed’s annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. BLOOMBERG

The brand is opening its first store in the Italian fashion capital, zeroing in on an intimate location nestled in the arty district of Brera.

The 538-square-foot unit to be unveiled on Friday follows the Gallery format that is also present in Paris and Brussels, and is dedicated to the brand’s fragrance, beauty and accessories lines only.

Hence the strategic location, with the space housed in a 19th-century building standing opposite the landmark Palazzo Citterio and on the corner between Via Carmine and Via Brera, a street known for its concentration of niche fragrance retailers and beauty players, ranging from Campomarzio70 and Olfattorio Bar à Parfums to Officine Universelle Buly 1803, Montale and The Merchant of Venice, among others.

These are alternated by art galleries, which are also in sync with the approach the Dries Van Noten store was conceived. As for the brand’s other units opened recently, the interior concept was overseen by the company’s founder, who retired from the runway last year, passing the creative baton to Julian Klausner.

“Brera’s artistic language, its streets, its architecture spoke to what we wanted the store to be. This felt like ‘home’ for a Gallery of this kind,” Van Noten told WWD. He added that this format felt right for the city and the recent Brussels opening as these units are meant to “offer an immediate and intimate encounter.”

“[The goal was] to create a moment of discovery, a place to slow down and treat yourself,” said the Belgian designer. “The space holds contrast, old and new, raw and refined. And a sense of calm, for small surprises that reveal themselves slowly.”

Such surprises not only refer to the product assortment but also the design pieces Van Noten has selected for the space and that stand out in the cozy, sophisticated environment juxtaposing materials such as polished white marble, travertine and brushed brass elements.

For one, a large travertine panel sculpted by Nerone Ceccarelli adds to the tactile quotient of the interiors, while a 2015 painting by Natalie Maier conveys a delicate chromatic quality. Other key elements comprise a rare desk designed by Silvio Berrone for Bialetti’s Milan headquarters in 1955, which dominates the store as much as the design chandelier made of Venini glass elements from the 1970s.

As for customers’ own product hunting, they will find the brand’s whole fragrance collection, beauty range and accessories, including the new lipstick case “Mezzanotte Blu,” or “Midnight Blue” in English, launching exclusively at Milan’s store this month.

So much so that the brand decided to double its presence in town this month, and not to disappoint customers eager to find the Dries Van Noten ready-to-wear collections: The company will also have a pop-up installation at the high-end retailer Antonia Milano’s outpost at the Portrait hotel. As reported, the Milan store opening is part of a bigger retail rollout plan that the company shared exclusively with WWD earlier this year. The surge of expansion in 2025 was headlined by fashion and beauty flagships opening in New York City and London, in addition to the beauty and accessories units debuting in Brussels and Milan.

For each location, Van Noten focused on creating spaces deeply connected to their surroundings, honoring the local culture while staying true to the brand’s core aesthetics. The founder confirmed there are more stores to come but underscored that “we only open when we feel we can give it something unique, not just more.”

Even if he stayed mum on where the Dries Van Noten retail flag might be planted next, the designer must be in his Italian era, as this year he found in the country a fertile ground for a personal project, too.

As reported, in May he acquired the 15th-century Palazzo Pisani Moretta on the Grand Canal in Venice, with plans to create a cultural venue around craft and art. According to the release shared at the time, Van Noten’s venture at the historic landmark “will be shaped through ongoing dialogue between artists and artisans, and will include exhibitions and presentations, offering a platform for contemporary work and inviting the public into a place where heritage is respected and thoughtfully reimagined for future generations.”

ASIAN markets swung on Friday at the end of a strong week for investors following the US interest rate cut, with attention now turning to a call between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

While the Federal Reserve and boss Jerome Powell were not as forthright as hoped on future rate reductions the mood on trading floors remained upbeat.

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday for the first time since December after a series of reports pointed to a slowdown in the country’s labour market, which offset stubbornly high inflation.

“From Comedy Central, it’s the all-new, government-approved ‘Daily Show,’ with your patriotically obedient host, Jon Stewart!”

That’s how Thursday night’s edition of “The Daily Show” began, as Stewart — who normally only hosts the late-night talker on Mondays — stepped in to satirically showcase what “The Daily Show” might have to morph into as the Trump administration pushes for acquiescence from the media. The whole “administration-compliant” “Daily Show” bit, of course, was a response to this week’s suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and host Jimmy Kimmel after FCC chairman Brendan Carr threatened to go after Disney because of that program’s content.

That’s per the logline on Thursday’s “Daily Show” episode: “A humble, obedient Jon Stewart heaps praise upon America’s Glorious Leader, Donald J. Trump, and provides an FCC-approved refresher on the rules of free speech in the wake of Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension.” (Watch the full clip below.)

Stewart joked that he had no idea who this “Johnny Dribble Live ABC character is.” But read between the lines on his true thoughts as he satirically noted, later in the show: “Our great administration has laid out very clear rules on free speech. Now, some naysayers may argue that this administration’s speech concerns are merely a cynical ploy, a thin gruel of a ruse, a smoke screen to obscure an unprecedented consolidation of power and unitary intimidation, principleless and coldly antithetical to any experiment in a constitutional republic governance. Some people would say that, not me though! I think it’s great!”

Indeed, “The Daily Show” opened with Stewart sitting behind the “Daily Show” desk with imagery of gold frames and decorations all around him — reminiscent of Trump’s recent Oval Office makeover.

Throughout the first part of the episode, Stewart helmed “The Daily Show” in the guise of a relucant host, reading state-approved propaganda about Donald Trump: “We’re coming to you tonight from a real shit hole, the crimeridden cesspool that is New York City. It is a tremendous disaster like no one’s ever seen before. Someone’s National Guard should invade this place. Am I right?”

The audience laughed at the setup, leading Stewart to jokingly admonish the audience for laughing. In a whisper: “What are you doing? Shut up! Don’t blow this for us!”

Stewart continued: “If you felt a little off these past couple of days, it’s probably because our great Father has not been home. For Father has been gracing England with his legendary warmth and radiance… he wowed the English with charm, intelligence and an undeniable sexual charisma that filled their air like a pheromone packed London fog!”

“The Daily Show” then showcased some clips from Trump’s trip. In one clip, Trump incorrectly suggested that the United States had ended a war between “Aberbaijan and Albania”; the conflict was actually between Azerbaijan and Armenia. But in a world where Trump can’t be wrong and must not be contradicted, a flummoxed Stewart said: “I would like to apologize very quickly. I stand corrected. Azerbaijan is actually pronounced ‘Aberbaijan,’ and Armenia is pronounced ‘Albania.’ I regret the error!”

In another clip from a U.K. press conference, a reporter there asked Trump about Kimmel’s suspension and “is free speech more under attack in Britain or America?”

Said Stewart of that journalist: “How dare you sir, how dare you? What outfit are you with, sir, the Antifa Herald Tribune? Why, I wouldn’t even line my parents’ cage with your rag!”

Stewart then explained the First Amendment in the United States: “There’s something called a ‘Talent-O-Meter.’ It’s a completely scientific instrument that is kept on the President’s desk, and it tells the President when a performer’s ‘TQ’ — talent quotient, measured mostly by niceness to the president, goes below a certain level. At which point, the FCC must be notified to threaten the acquisition prospects for billion dollar mergers of network affiliates. These affiliates are then asked to give ultimatums to the even larger mega corporation that controls the flow of state approved content, or the FCC can just choose to threaten those licenses directly. It’s basic science. Read your Constitution!”

Noting that the right wing has demanded Kimmel’s removal because they believe he’s misleading viewers, Stewart then ran a series of clips from Conservative pundits and politicians speaking completely debunked lies — including one that suggested the January 6 insurrectionists were just “sightseers.”

That one really struck a chord with the audience, which booed. Responded Stewart, in mock horror to the audience reaction: “Oh, Your Lordship. I do not know whence these peasants come. That last roll of clips all true, especially that last one about sightseers, because technically, anything you see is a sight, even if that is you punching a cop.”

Then Stewart showed clips of folks on the right proclaiming that “you can’t call someone who you disagree with a fascist leaders. You cannot call their political opponent opponents Nazis and fascist and enemies of the state.” Followed by clips of folks on the right calling the Democrats, Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi fascists and enemies of the state.

Stewart also satirically brought up how clearly just the left mocks tragedy — and then showed clips including one of Donald Trump Jr. making fun of Paul Pelosi being bludgeoned by a hammer, as well as Fox News’ Paul Hegseth and Rachel Campos-Duffy doing the same. “There were consequences,” Stewart promised. “This gentleman had to leave television. I’m not sure where he went, but I’m sure it’s not some prestigious, consequential position he’s not remotely qualified for.” (Hegseth is now the Secretary of Defense.)

“These two could learn a lesson from our dear President, who, like Santa, knows that we are all God’s children. The President knows we’re all God’s children, and the President would never make light of a politically motivated attack,” Stewart said.

Cut to clip of Trump: “Well, stand up to crazy Nancy Pelosi who ruined San Francisco. How’s her husband doing, by the way?”

“You see, that’s how it’s done,” Stewart said. “You stop in the middle of a speech to inquire about the condition of an 82-year-old man who was attacked with a hammer in his own home. He has a fractured skull. Mr. President, but thank you for asking. Your kindness is only outshined by your manliness.”

Later, Stewart cut to the rest of “The Daily Show” news team, stationed at “Donaldham Linctrump Monument and Casino” to explain why they don’t believe Trump is stifling free speech.

Desi Lydic, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, Josh Johnson, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, Ronny Chieng and Troy Iwata all responded in unison: “Of course not. John. Americans are free to express any opinion. We want to suggest otherwise. Is laughable. Ha, ha, ha. We are a nation of their diverse perspectives, and we are not afraid to be different.”

The team ended by singing an ode to Trump, congratulating him for ending “eight to 10 wars, and even though some of those countries don’t really exist, they exist.” Also: “You have a massive penis, much bigger than normal!” And, “He’s a superhero who needs no cape, and he was not technically convicted of…”
