43.
VIDEO: Witches’ broom sounds like something for Halloween, but for trees, it is not part of a costume. The broom, a dense mass of branches, is the result of dwarf mistletoe, a parasitic plant impacting Montana forests.

44.
45.
46.
47.
“A lot of times infected trees look really green and healthy, but it’s actually just the mistletoe, the parasitic plant,” said Amy Gannon, who runs the Forest Pest Management Program for the Montana Department of Natural Resources & Conservation (DNRC).

48.
49.
50.
51.
Every species of Montana conifer, except Ponderosa pine, has been targeted by its own specific mistletoe. The infection starts small, then grows for years, or even decades, slowly choking the tree beneath it.

52.
53.
54.
55.
“They have to have a living host and they draw the nutrients from the host tree,” Gannon said. “That’s robbing the tree of all the nutrients, and the rest of the tree is dying. So, the top of that tree is dying.”

56.
57.
58.
59.
As the infection progresses, the parasite becomes more and more visible. As hormonal changes occur in the tree, witches’ brooms grow large, protruding out in heavy, dense clusters. The infection spreads, attacking more than one tree in a stand.

60.
61.
62.
63.
“It’s important to recognize that these plants are raining seeds down on the understory,” Gannon said. “They shoot seeds, and they can go 20, 30 feet, and then they’ll stick on the understory.”

94.
PHOTOS: A Jerome man was flown to the hospital Thursday night after crashing into a bridge pillar on Interstate 15 near Blackfoot. The crash happened around 8:45 p.m. in the southbound lanes near milepost 92 in Bingham County. The 46-year-old driver was in a white 2026 Kenworth towing an empty milk tanker when he drove off the left side of the interstate and struck a bridge pillar supporting the Riverton Road overpass, according to Idaho State Police. “The structural integrity of the Riverton overpass was compromised during the collision and will be closed to all traffic,” ISP said in a news release.

156.
The Daily Burn Code from Northern Nevada Public Health returns Nov. 1. The daily code will help residents determine when they can use a wood burning fireplace, stove or other device and will run through Feb. 28, 2026. A green code will mean that burning is allowed, while yellow means burning is discouraged, and red will mean burning is prohibited.

157.
158.
159.
160.
In 2024, the burn code was in place for 120 days. 117 of those days were green and three were yellow. The last red code was issued in December 2017. The burn code applies to residences in certain ZIP codes from Washoe Valley to the Silver Knolls area. Houses in which wood burning is the only form of heating can obtain an exemption through AQMD.

219.
Authorities in Newton County are reporting the death of a woman who they believe died in a house fire on October 29, 2025. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office reports the Newton County Central Dispatch Center received a call reporting a structure fire at 28252 Highway HH at approximately 1:50 p.m. Wednesday.

220.
221.
222.
223.
Firefighters arrived to find the residence fully engulfed. Crews worked on the fire for most of Wednesday afternoon and into the evening. Deputies responded to the scene along with the Midway, Stella, and Wheaton Fire Departments, and the Newton County Ambulance District.

224.
225.
226.
227.
After the fire was brought under control, firefighters and the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office searched the residence and located the body of the female victim, Sheriff Matt Stewart said in a release Thursday. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

228.
229.
230.
231.
The fire is now under investigation by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office. Sheriff Stewart noted that at this time, the structure fire does not appear to be related to a separate structure fire that occurred at 17723 Highway O.

232.
233.
234.
235.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact Detective Dale Brashers with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office or the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

262.
VIDEO: A dramatic rescue by Phoenix Police of a woman who fell into a canal was captured on camera. Newly released body cam video captures the dramatic rescue that happened in the early morning hours of Oct. 14. The woman claimed she was sitting near the edge of the canal when she fell in.

263.
264.
265.
266.
Police said the woman’s phone was still able to call 911 despite her falling in the water. Officers used a retractable ladder to aid in their rescue efforts. “Keep climbing, we’re going to get you,” one of the officers can be heard saying to the woman. As the woman was trying to climb out, she can be heard crying and very emotional. “Don’t let me go,” she said.

270.
The Phoenix Fire Department said she was fortunate to make it out alright, but that isn’t always the case when it comes to scenarios like this. “They (the canals) can be very dangerous, they have really steep concrete walls that make escape really difficult,” said Phoenix Fire Capt. Mike Johnson. He said another danger of these canals is the deceptive current and what’s underneath the water, including debris that you can get tangled up in or stuck on.

337.
Authorities safely disposed of deteriorated dynamite discovered Thursday afternoon at a Valdez residence, prompting a temporary evacuation of nearby homes. The Valdez Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal team, assisted by state and federal personnel, responded at around 3 p.m. to a home on Dadina Street after a person cleaning the property found the old explosives, officials said.

338.
339.
340.
341.
Police determined the dynamite was in degraded condition and too unstable to move. Residents in the immediate area were notified of the hazard and asked to temporarily leave their homes while the explosives were handled. Valdez Fire and EMS were placed on standby throughout the operation. By 6 p.m., the dynamite was safely disposed of, and residents were cleared to return home, officials said.
