70.

71.
VIDEO: Ever wonder what it’s like to go inside a burning building? Captain C.J. Pearson gives us a firsthand look. He wore a GoPro for us during training. The video shows him on his hands and knees trying to locate victims. With the help of mineral smoke and no light this is a close as it gets to a real call. “We had difficult search conditions in front of the building all the way to the back,” says Captain Pearson with Reno Fire Department. “And it has a very complex layout.”

72.
73.
74.
75.
That’s because this is not a modern building. It served as KOLO’s Radio station for years. And now is being prepped for demolition. “It was difficult,” says Captain Derek Hirsch with Truckee Meadows Fire. “There was a lot of stuff in there. It’s an old storage unit.” Two times a day for the next two weeks, fire engines will show up in front of the radio building and must make decisions in real time. They must break entry through this training door called a forcible entry prop. And then search for victims and the fire source. They use a thermal imaging camera which detects heat. As we move in from the doorway, the camera shows us someone is there. But they are nearly invisible with the naked eye.

76.
77.
78.
79.
The camera’s heat detection capabilities help detect dummies placed in the building. They have heat pads on them so that firefighters can hopefully find them and bring them outside in the light. “So, we get to re-instill these important tenants of our job,” says Chief Cory Whitlock. He’s from the Reno Fire Department Training Division. “By aggressive search and life safety. So that is really what we are driving home here.”

80.
81.
82.
83.
And for those firefighters who have not gone through this training yet, our story won’t give any clues as to what awaits you at the KOLO Radio Building. It’s a 7000 square foot building. Whitlock and others are changing things up, so that no two sessions are alike.

115.
Marshalltown fire crews were on scene for nearly seven hours at a house fire that spread to a neighboring business, eventually destroying both. According to the Marshalltown Fire Department, crews were alerted to a structure fire at 116 North Center Street around 11:15 a.m. on Saturday. Authorities say the building was known to be a vacant and boarded up home, which was frequented by squatters.

116.
117.
118.
119.
Fire crews arrived on scene and found the two-story home with heavy fire involvement through the entire home. The house fire had also spread to an exposed business located directly to the south. The business had flames in the attic, which were rapidly spreading through the building.

120.
121.
122.
123.
Around 10 minutes after the crews arrived on scene and began, the roof of the home collapsed. Defensive fire conditions were declared, meaning no firefighters were allowed to enter the home. Entry into the business was restricted after the attic space flashed over and collapsed. Authorities say metal roofing shielded the fire from water application.

124.
125.
126.
127.
The Marshalltown FD requested additional off-duty MFD personnel to help along with mutual aid engines from Liscomb FD, Albion, and Toledo Access. Authorities say 35 firefighters were at the scene during peak staffing and Marshalltown FD was on scene for around seven hours.

128.
129.
130.
131.
The home collapsed and prevented fire crews from extinguishing it completely. An emergency demolition was requested by Construct who used a large excavator to push down the outer walls that were in danger of further collapse, allowing firefighters to fully extinguish the smoldering embers.

159.
VIDEO: Jeff Jones, a paramedic, was killed in a crash in Dewey County while driving a patient in an ambulance, and his colleagues are mourning his loss with plans for a vigil. A procession of first responders escorted Jones from Oklahoma City to Woodward on Saturday. Kristi Boswell-Weathers, a former EMT who worked alongside Jones, fondly remembers her time with him.

160.
161.
162.
163.
Boswell-Weathers curated scrapbooks capturing decades of memories from her time as an EMT, including working with Jones in the early 2000s. Jones was killed Thursday near Oakwood while driving a transfer patient to Oklahoma City in an ambulance. Countless ambulances, police cruisers and fire trucks escorted Jones back to Oklahoma City on Saturday.

164.
165.
166.
167.
“I had the TV on, and I heard about an ambulance crashing and I had just caught the end of it,” Boswell-Weathers said. “When it comes to EMS, we all know each other so the chances that I would know them were probably great but no idea it would be someone I know so closely.” She described Jones as “silly fun” and a knowledgeable first responder, noting that she had called him to her home before for her son, who has a chronic heart condition.

168.
169.
170.
171.
“It was just so comforting to know him and to know he knew what he was doing,” she said. As she and countless other first responders grieve, Boswell-Weathers said it brings her comfort knowing Jones died doing what he loved. “I just know if Jeff Jones was on that ambulance the patient was getting the best care they can get,” she said. She and others are hoping to plan a vigil in the coming weeks as a way for first responders to gather to honor their own.

198.
PHOTOS: Over 120 personnel responded to a brush fire that damaged several homes and a soccer field on Sunday in the Beacon Hill area, leaving two people with minor injuries. The Seattle Fire Department reported heavy smoke in the 2500 block of S. Myrtle St just before 4 p.m. At it’s peak, it was a 3-alarm response from SPD and other agencies. An SPD spokesperson says that four homes were damaged in total, two of which had fire force its way inside the homes, the other two suffering exterior damage.

199.
200.
201.
202.
SFD added that two people were treated on scene, and were sent to a hospital for further treatment but were in stable condition, with non-life threatening injuries. A firefighter was also treated for a minor injury, and was able to return to working the fire. David Widham was one of those residents, who says his wife spotted the fire and they quickly grabbed their cat and got out of the house. They did not know the extent of the damages until they were able to return nearly 2 hours later.

233.
Firefighters from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue (TVF&R), with assistance from Dundee Fire, worked to extinguish a commercial fire in the 400 block of W 1st Street in Newberg. The fire prompted the closure of Highway 99W in both directions, with Newberg-Dundee Police managing traffic control. Callers to 911 reported seeing heavy black smoke emanating from the building, and upon arrival, firefighters found pressurized smoke coming from all four sides.

234.
235.
236.
237.
Crews then began efforts to extinguish the blaze. “There are currently no reported injuries, and it is too early to have information on cause,” said a spokesperson. A business in the area is Moreno Tires, but TVF&R did not confirm whether it’s the building that caught fire. As of 6:12 p.m., TVF&R posted on social media that the fire had been brought under control and that crews found pressurized smoke on all four sides of the building. They also reported a sagging roof.

267.
PHOTOS: A crash between a tractor-trailer and a Valley Metro light rail train caused both to go up in flames Sunday night. Phoenix police say they were called to the area near I-10 and Washington Street around 7:15 p.m. for a reported crash between a tractor-trailer and a light rail train. When officers arrived, they found both the train and the tractor-trailer engulfed in flames. Phoenix fire officials said 20-25 passengers were on the train when the crash occurred. All of the passengers were escorted off the train and were not seriously hurt. The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. What caused the crash is not yet known. Washington Street westbound was closed between 16th and 20th Streets as crews worked to clean up the crash area.

298.
Residents of a two-story Pomona apartment building had to flee their homes in the early morning hours Saturday while smoke and flames poured through the roof over some units. The fire was reported at 2:05 a.m. Saturday at the building at 707 N. East End Avenue, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. David Dantic. Flames and heavy smoke showed through the roof when firefighters arrived, Dantic said.

302.
By the time the flames were out at 3:22 a.m., four units had been damaged, he said. The building has 28 units. The fire spread into the attic shared by some of the damaged units. No injuries were reported, Dantic said. About 40 residents were displaced from their units, and the American Red Cross was helping them find places to stay. Investigators have yet to determine where the fire started and why, the fire captain said.

334.
Central EMS has earned reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS), held by fewer than 200 of the nation’s more than 20,000 EMS agencies. According to a news release, the recognition reflects the agency’s adherence to national standards in patient care, safety, training, equipment and leadership.

335.
336.
337.
338.
The certification places Central EMS among the top 1% of U.S. ambulance services, and its Communications Center is also accredited as an Accredited Center of Excellence (ACE) by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch. “Reaccreditation is a rigorous process that evaluates every aspect of our operations,” Chief Steve Harrison said in the release. “Earning CAAS reaccreditation reflects the dedication and professionalism of our staff. Every paramedic, EMT, dispatcher, and support team member contributes to this achievement.” Assistant Chief Shawna Ross said that the recognition “demonstrates that the men and women of Central EMS consistently deliver exceptional care to our patients and community.” Central EMS provides 911 emergency medical services and interfacility transport across Washington County and surrounding areas.

365.
VIDEO: CAL FIRE crews responded to the scene of a deadly plane wreck after receiving a call on Friday afternoon that an aircraft crashed 10-miles northeast of Mount Hamilton in Santa Clara County. Fire officials say one person is dead. KTVU has learned from sources that this was an experimental plane. CAL FIRE’s SCU unit, which works the South Bay, Alameda County as well as Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties, said at 2:30 p.m., they received a call of a plane crash, but at that time, had not yet located any wreckage. Aerial footage shows the area of the crash with what officials call an “extensive debris field”, and CAL FIRE at the scene. Two helicopters assisted with finding the wreck. Fire officials said there were no reports of a fire. CAL FIRE was to remain at the scene but requested the coroner along with the National Transportation Safety Board.
