41.

New vehicles have been in decline since the beginning of the year, with the market down 8.2%. It must be said that prices have skyrocketed. According to our study, Peugeot and Dacia have not hesitated to implement increases of more than 20% in three years on certain models.

 42.
Have car manufacturers lost their minds? As new car price studies have been coming thick and fast in recent weeks, Que Choisir has conducted its own analysis of new car prices. It was chosen to compare prices posted in 2022 with those in 2025, over a period of 36 months, which is equivalent to the average length of a lease-to-own (LOA) contract. The only regulatory event to note during this period is the introduction of Global Safety Regulation 2 (GSR2) concerning mandatory equipment, which would have increased the price of The results obtained (see table) are nevertheless significant in many respects.

 43.
The end of the low-cost Dacia car

 44.
First of all, the prices of the market stars are indeed the result of a policy more than a cost price. The best illustration of this is the price of the Renault Clio: it is down in 2025 compared to 2022! The starting price is €200 lower, the entire range (based on catalog prices) is slightly cheaper than in 2022. and is facing head-on competition from the Peugeot 208. In order to reverse the trend, Renault decided in May 2025 to launch a version with the lowest possible starting price (€2,400 below the previous price) and not to increase the rest of the range.

 45.
A strategy that is the opposite of that pursued by sister brand Dacia with its Sandero , which is selling very well. According to our findings, the vehicle’s average list price has increased by 16.2% in the space of 3 years, while only a restyling of the logo on the front face is worth noting. The recent study by the Mobilities in Transition Institute on car prices between 2020 and 2024 confirms this state of affairs. The authors, one of whom is a former senior executive of the Renault group, note that the Dacia Sandero is one of the models on the market that has seen the most price increase in recent times: +37% between 2020 and 2024. “Dacia is assuming its repositioning from low cost to value for money ,” the study states. An idea that also predominates when it comes to the prices of the Dacia Jogger (+30.2% in 3 years!) or the Duster SUV (+22.9%), although the latter is a Further proof that Dacia is indeed controlling its prices: the Spring is, for its part, less expensive in 2025 than in 2022, because the city car is now deprived of bonuses, its public has turned away from it.

The post Why the general public is turning away from new cars first appeared on https://autocarbuzz.com.

 60.

More and more companies are offering drivers looking to buy a used car a vehicle history report. But between inaccuracies and a severe lack of relevant information, these reports seem far from essential, given that the government provides the correct information for free…

 61.
With the price of new cars continuing to rise, motorists are increasingly turning to the second-hand market, which is now three times higher than the price of new cars. Sensing a good deal, many companies offer, for a fee, to send you a history report on a specific vehicle. All you have to do is provide a few details online (license plate or VIN number) and pay to receive a document on the history of the desired car, almost instantly.

 62.
In addition to the official and free public service Histovec , Que Choisir has chosen to test reports from 3 different companies: Autoviza, Car Vertical and Autorigin. The vehicle chosen for this test was chosen for a good reason: after being registered new in Belgium in 2006, it was imported into France in 2022. It is a Mazda MX5 2.0 Performance.

 63.
Against all expectations, these history reports turned out to be very approximate, all to varying degrees and for various reasons. Of the four service providers considered, the Car Vertical report (charged €35.99, the most expensive) was not even able to provide the most crucial information, namely that the car had been imported into France! The others mentioned a high probability that the vehicle had been imported, without ever being able to determine the country of origin. This information is nevertheless important. While Autoviza (€20) considered that the person who was going to acquire the Mazda would certainly become “the third owner “, Autorigin (€19.95) did no better, it also mentioned two previous owners. Only Histovec was able to be relevant: “The exact number of owners cannot be calculated with precision, first registration abroad.”

 64.
Undoubtedly, tracking mileage readings is the crux of these history reports. The CarVertical study announces 9 available readings, but only highlights one. Unfortunately, the company fails to mention the context in which this mileage was recorded. This is a shame, especially since Car Vertical was the only company able to provide the mileages recorded during the first 8 years of the car’s life in Belgium. But, once again, this information is delivered raw in a diagram (no trace of the country of origin or the issuer), which greatly alters its value. Besides Histovec, only Autorigin ultimately provided convincing history data, mentioning the 2024 technical inspection record, which shows the vehicle’s mileage at that time. This service provider even went further, informing the owner of the test car that his car had been damaged and repaired in 2008 in Belgium! Details of the affected parts were even provided. After investigation and cross-checking with the car’s examination, it appears that the information is perfectly plausible: astonishing, indeed!

The post What are used car history sites worth? first appeared on https://autocarbuzz.com.

 79.

Every year, nearly 4 million people rent a vehicle. To ensure a smooth rental experience, there are precautions to take before picking up the car, during the rental period, and after returning it. Here’s our advice.

 80.
Before

 81.
Check prices and extras (insurance, second driver, GPS, returning the vehicle to a different agency, etc.). If you book well in advance, you can benefit from a 15 to 20% discount. The amount of the security deposit or the fees applied in the event of late return of the vehicle must be displayed and included on websites and brochures. Some rental companies require an advance on rental. Read the contract carefully before signing it (information on the driver(s), type of vehicle, cost, excess amount, date and place of departure, etc.). Planning to go abroad? Ask if this is allowed. Walk around the vehicle before signing its condition sheet, report any scratches, dents, damaged tires, missing spare tire, faulty air conditioning, etc. It is advisable to take out insurance to reduce the amount of the excess you will have to pay in the event of a problem, but check whether your credit card already provides this guarantee.

 82.
Good to know

 83.
When renting a vehicle online, the withdrawal period does not apply (Article L. 221-28 of the French Consumer Code). Check the cancellation options offered by the rental company, if applicable, and the conditions.

 84.
Carefully read the rental company’s general rental conditions to understand the subscription and payment terms (e.g., requirement of a “credit” card; the payer, therefore the bank card holder, must be the driver).

 85.
If your contract requires the use of a “credit” card, contact your bank to find out your situation and the options they may offer. Immediate debit cards are debit cards. Deferred debit cards or revolving credit cards, in particular, are credit cards.

 86.
Check what insurance is included with your bank card (damage, vehicle theft, etc.).

 87.
During

 88.
Take photos, ideally dated or even time-stamped.

 89.
Carefully read the rental agreement to verify the vehicle’s condition and specifications. This will allow you to see if there are any apparent defects not listed in the agreement (a broken light, a scratch, etc.), or if there are any errors in mileage or fuel level, for example. You can then request a modification to the rental agreement or mention it on the vehicle’s handover inventory.

 90.
The contract may include other guarantees. These may vary depending on the rental company and the country. To avoid purchasing unnecessary insurance, find out in advance what guarantees or insurance you are personally covered by.

 91.
If the reserved vehicle is unavailable, you can request another model at no extra cost, even if it is a higher category. In the event of a mechanical problem, you can request a replacement vehicle and claim any repair or breakdown costs.

 92.
Caution: Never have any repairs carried out without consulting the rental company, who will explain how to proceed; an assistance service is available outside of opening hours.

 93.
After

 94.
The car must be returned in good condition, with a full tank of gas, as the rental company often charges more for fuel than gas stations. If the agency is closed, it is sometimes possible to put the keys and papers in a box provided for this purpose, indicating the mileage on the odometer. The general rental conditions may stipulate that if the keys are returned in the agency’s mailbox, you remain “guardian” of the vehicle until the agency opens. This means that you are liable for any damage that may occur to the vehicle between the time of its return and the time of said opening. Be aware that this clause has been deemed abusive on several occasions, whether by the commission for abusive clauses or by the courts at the initiative of UFC-Que Choisir . Do not hesitate to contest it.

 95.
Insist on a joint inventory. This will allow you to effectively contest the situation in the event of a dispute. If the vehicle cannot be subject to a joint inventory because the agency is closed, take photos, ideally dated or even time-stamped, of the vehicle.

 96.
In the event of a dispute (amount debited greater than that stipulated in the contract, damage to your name, etc.), contact one of the local UFC-Que Choisir associations .

The post Our tips for a peaceful rental first appeared on https://autocarbuzz.com.

 111.

Overall satisfaction is good and, if we go into detail, the average scores even approach 9/10 for the condition of the vehicle (8.9 for its operation and 8.7 for its cleanliness). What does bring the score down a little, however, concerns the collection and return processes. Moreover, the problem encountered most frequently by respondents is a poorly carried out inventory, more than one in five have encountered this (22%).

 112.
Technical problems and damages poorly handled

 113.
16% of respondents to our survey experienced a technical problem, an accident, or damage to their vehicle (scratches, impacts, etc.). In these cases, 1 in 2 people felt the rental company’s response was unsatisfactory. 37% even considered it very unsatisfactory. Some rental companies even withheld part or all of the deposit, for 8% of respondents. Under these conditions, the satisfaction rating logically plummets to 3.8/10 for those affected.

 114.
The waltz of prices

 115.
Among traditional rental agencies, there are significant price differences, particularly for city cars. For example, across the five locations surveyed, renting a city car from Sixt costs an average of 63% more than from Rent a Car. Ada also stands out for its competitive prices. For more high-end cars, the differences are smaller, but Sixt still remains the most expensive.

 116.
But be careful, the more affordable prices of Rent a Car and Ada have an impact on the options offered or the rental conditions. Thus, unlike their competitors, the number of kilometers included in the rental is not unlimited. Only 700 km are included in the base price, and you have to pay to increase this distance. For a city car, you have to add on average between €5 and €10 for every additional 100 km. For a compact SUV, it’s generally between €10 and €15.

 117.
The franchise is expensive

 118.
For a city car, the excess averages €1,700, but can reach €2,500 at Ada, while it’s only €1,200 at Rent a Car. For a compact SUV, the excess increases to an average of €2,500. Rent a Car once again has the lowest excess (€1,500), unlike Europcar (€3,000).

 119.
To waive this excess, you need to take out specific insurance. 28% of respondents to our survey did so. In this case, the average price is €150, which adds nearly 35% to the basic rental price! The very low price of insurance at Sixt partially offsets the high cost of rental. Note that Budget does not offer an excess buyback option on its website, and that at Ada and Rent a Car, the excess is lowered but does not disappear entirely: in the event of a claim, the renter will therefore still have to pay the costs.

 120.
Larger stores are cheaper

 121.
Several major retail chains offer car rental services, such as E.Leclerc, Système U, and Carrefour. In our survey, they received very high satisfaction scores, nearly a full point higher than those of traditional rental agencies. The main reason? Very competitive prices: at E.Leclerc, the brand with the most developed rental network, rates are on average 33% cheaper than at agencies. The gap even reaches 42% if we focus on city cars.

 122.
However, the offerings at these companies remain more limited, and most importantly, rental points are not located near train stations and airports, unlike traditional agencies. Furthermore, their location generally does not allow easy access by train and requires taking a taxi.

 123.
Private rentals are popular

 124.
An alternative to professional rental companies is peer-to-peer rental, a practice that’s gaining popularity. In France, the two main players in the market are Turo (formerly Ouicar) and Getaround. The latter also includes professionals who don’t have physical agencies and who offer cars with an autonomous door unlocking system via an app. Thanks to their very competitive prices, both rental sites receive a very high satisfaction rating (8.8). It must be said that the rates, which vary greatly, are between 30% and 40% cheaper than those charged by traditional agencies, for vehicles offered at airports or near train stations. The downside: you’ll generally find older vehicles that aren’t always shiny.

 125.
How did we do it?

 126.
1,606 readers responded to our survey, sent from March 13 to 23, 2025 by newsletter and on social networks, concerning the use and satisfaction of renting a private vehicle (excluding utility vehicles) over the past 5 years.

 127.
We also carried out in March 2025 a price survey for a one-week rental (from April 26 to May 3) in 3 train stations (Paris-Gare-de-Lyon, Lyon-Part-Dieu, Marseille-Saint-Charles) and 2 airports (Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, Nice-Côte d’Azur) for a city car (Fiat 500, Twingo, etc.) with a 500 km package and a compact SUV (Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur, etc.) for 1,000 km (with supplement where applicable).

 128.
Prices were collected from 10 professional rental sites (Ada, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, E.Leclerc Location, Rent a Car, Sixt) and two sites connecting individuals (Getaround and Turo).

The post You and short-term car rental first appeared on https://autocarbuzz.com.

 196.

The second largest household expense after housing, a new car is not something to be bought lightly.

 197.
While negotiating the price of a new car should be based on tangible arguments, you should never try to obtain the highest discount. Indeed, the margin professionals offer on the sale of new vehicles is not infinitely expandable. Unless the manufacturer is running a promotional operation, a discount of 10 to 12% already represents a good commercial gesture. Be careful, if it’s a highly sought-after model like a convertible, a sports coupe, or a “trendy” city car, the seller will not be inclined to grant any discount. However, to make a sale, sellers can make other gestures by offering an accessory or service. An extended warranty or a maintenance contract are significant expenses for a household, and they generally represent sales aids offered to dealerships by manufacturers. Roof racks, GPS systems, high-end car stereos… similarly, accessories are “freebies” that sellers easily give away, without costing them too much. Indeed, the margins on these “extras” are higher, giving them more room to maneuver.

 198.
Adopt a “zen attitude”

 199.
The salesperson is often a shrewd psychologist and can spot a customer in a hurry at first glance. For them, an impatient customer often means a signed contract. Therefore, you should never let the salesperson know that you are interested in a vehicle or that the purchase is urgent. Enthusiasm and impatience to get behind the wheel limit the possibilities for negotiation. It is best not to get hung up on specific details such as color, upholstery, trim, model year, etc. This allows you to gauge the offers from competing dealerships in the same network and to know the availability of vehicles. Indeed, certain models with unusual colors, certain cars ordered but ultimately not purchased, or models at the end of their model year or those from a previous model year 1 are opportunities that “clutter” dealership lots. These vehicles represent a financial investment or a means of ensuring that the sales target is reached, and sellers are often prepared to make some sacrifices to sell them!

 200.
Wait for the right time

 201.
While there’s no longer a truly favorable time to buy, three months remain quite favorable for negotiation: August, September, and January. The first two are traditionally lower sales. The third is the time for balance sheets and forecast schedules for the coming year. Similarly, it can be interesting to look out for discounts and other customer benefits offered by manufacturers. Air conditioning for 1 euro in spring, ski racks before winter, navigation or audio-video equipment before the summer holidays allow you to acquire a new vehicle for a more reasonable budget. These “free” features generally reach several hundred euros when purchased separately. Being aware of these promotions prevents salespeople from passing them off as a goodwill gesture.

The post How to negotiate the purchase of a new car first appeared on https://autocarbuzz.com.

 261.

Before heading to the dealership to buy a new vehicle, it’s best to ask yourself the right questions about your needs. These fact sheets will help you select the engine that best suits your budget.

 262.
The gasoline engine

 263.
Those who drive less than 12,000 km per year in a city car or compact car. Gasoline will meet many of their needs while remaining the least expensive option.

 264.
Advantages: purchase cost and versatility

 265.
The gasoline engine is certainly the one that has evolved the most in the last 15 years. Its cylinder capacity has melted like snow in the sun (this is called downsizing) and has also been supplemented by a turbocharger (to increase driving pleasure and improve acceleration), direct injection (helping to control consumption) and, more recently, a particulate filter (to become cleaner). With all this, it can now be suitable for almost all types of use, including long journeys (unless they are very regular, in which case diesel remains the most suitable). In terms of price, this engine is also the most affordable in the manufacturers’ catalogs.

 266.
LPG

 267.
Much cheaper, the latter is quite common in gas stations. The disadvantage of this engine is that it requires the installation of a fuel system dedicated to LPG alongside the one dedicated to gasoline: a second tank (which encroaches While the autonomy in LPG mode alone stagnates around 350 km, the combined use of the two fuels allows, on the other hand, to travel around 1,000 km without returning to the pump.

 268.
E85

 269.
It must either be installed as standard (in rare cases), or a conversion box must be installed (on gasoline cars since 2001). With fuel at less than €1 per liter, the cost of this installation (up to €1,300) will be quickly amortized. Two drawbacks: excess fuel consumption of around 20% and an underdeveloped distribution network (barely 30% of stations offer E85). Fortunately, the engine is capable of consuming any gasoline, which helps prevent running out of fuel.

 270.
Advantages: sobriety and autonomy

 271.
While the diesel engine is clearly losing ground in new car sales, it still has some solid advantages for those who drive a lot. The main one? Fuel consumption is around 20% lower than that of a gasoline engine of the same power, resulting in a lower running cost. Even if its profitability is currently being eroded by a sharply rising fuel price at the pump (over the year, you have to drive several thousand additional kilometers to recoup the additional purchase cost), diesel remains advantageous in the long term. In general, its fuel efficiency also translates into a greater range than other types of engine. Furthermore, thanks to exhaust gas treatment devices such as the particulate filter, the NOx trap, or the use of the AdBlue additive, it has become significantly cleaner.

The post How to choose the right engine first appeared on https://autocarbuzz.com.

 286.

While it’s usually possible to test drive a model before buying it, you’ll only find out the quality of its manufacturer’s after-sales service after the fact. Automobile Magazine has conducted a survey to help you find out how you’ll be treated.

 287.
To win new customers, offering well-finished models that appeal is essential. But to hope to keep these buyers, it’s far from enough. Unlike a television or a washing machine, a car needs regular maintenance. You will therefore most often have to visit the manufacturer’s workshops at least for the entire duration of the warranty. Even if European legislation allows you to have your service done elsewhere without losing the benefit of this coverage, few of you are unfaithful during this period. More and more brands are even trying to keep you afterward. Launched in 2021, the Toyota Relax program has attracted imitators. It consists of offering a year of extended warranty… on the condition that your vehicle is serviced by the network. The gift is therefore not without interest. The goal is to prevent customers from leaving for an auto center or independent garage as soon as they feel free to do so. Dacia, Peugeot, Nissan, and Citroën have all imitated this model, with more or less attractive conditions.

 288.
More and more manufacturers are offering to extend the warranty in exchange for maintenance in the network, like Citroën.

 289.
More and more manufacturers are offering to extend their warranty in exchange for maintenance carried out within the network, like Citroën. © Citroën

 290.
Peugeot Allure Care: What is the 8-year, 160,000 km warranty really worth?

 291.
A reinforced methodology

 292.
Born over 25 years ago, our after-sales service survey is more relevant than ever, even if it doesn’t claim to be perfect. The treatment you receive can still vary greatly from one garage to another, or even from one contact to another. To try to evaluate each manufacturer as fairly as possible, we revised our methodology in our previous survey . The “customer satisfaction” rating, which has a much higher coefficient than the others, is now based on our reader-ambassadors who visited the brands’ workshops during the twelve months preceding our survey. More than 1,200 of them responded to a very detailed questionnaire, which allowed us to properly gauge the temperature among the 17 manufacturers for which we collected sufficient data. The “proximity to the network” and “workshop availability” ratings have not changed for several years. For the first, we always base ourselves on the number of service points, provided by the manufacturer following our requests. The second is directly derived from this since it is based on the ratio between the number of workshops and the brand’s new car registrations between 2021 and 2023.

 293.
Unfortunately, our study doesn’t contain all good news. With a few exceptions, such as Citroën and Skoda, manufacturers are tending to reduce their network. Renault-Dacia and Peugeot are still doing well, both of which maintain an exceptional territorial coverage, with more than 3,000 workshops for the former. But for Toyota, which just ended 2024 with exceptional sales in France, the number of service points currently seems quite insufficient to avoid lengthy delays. The Japanese brand thus falls out of the top 10 despite consistently high satisfaction. Fortunately, the Japanese brand can at least count on the reliability of most of its models to avoid unexpectedly clogging up its lifting bridges. It is also working on solutions to reduce waiting times by three . The situation is not much better at BMW-Mini, while Volkswagen, Hyundai, Audi, Mercedes, and Volvo are doing barely better. As we feared last year, the “network availability” rating is therefore down. It is at the same, fairly average, level as the “network proximity” rating.

 294.
Here is the 2024 list of the best garages in France according to a specialist comparison site

 295.
Satisfaction still good but decreasing

 296.
However, it’s our “customer satisfaction” indicator that benefits from the highest coefficient. We observed highly variable results, even within the same automotive group, with a few surprises. The overall level remains good. But the slightly declining general average should still encourage manufacturers to be vigilant. When a customer leaves after a bad experience, it’s often impossible to win them back. You can find the full ranking in issue 945 of L’Automobile Magazine .

 297.
Mazda, a mixed record

 298.
After returning to our ranking last year, and without making any splash, Mazda once again delivers a mixed performance. On the one hand, the size of the network appears sufficient to prevent the 115 workshops from being overwhelmed given the number of vehicles sold in France. On the other, it remains too modest to prevent some customers from having to travel many kilometers for each service or repair. Mazda owners also consider themselves very well received, and a majority find the price of parts and labor very reasonable. However, they are far from being as enthusiastic as Honda about the quality of after-sales service…

The post Manufacturers Offering the Best After-Sales Service in 2025 first appeared on https://autocarbuzz.com.

 313.

In France, every car must have on board the vehicle documents (registration document and insurance), a safety vest and an approved warning triangle as well as a breathalyzer meeting NF standards (chemical or electronic).

 314.
But beyond what is mandatory and regulated, we advise you to place certain accessories or equipment in your glove compartment or trunk.

 315.
1. The first aid kit

 316.
Whether you’re treating minor or major injuries, we recommend keeping a small kit with compresses, bandages, disinfectant, cotton wool, small scissors, and tweezers. For less than €10, this little kit can be very useful (and is already mandatory in some countries).

 317.
2. An insurance statement and a pen

 318.
Not having a statement on you means you risk not filing your car insurance claim correctly if necessary. And not having a pen to fill it out is even worse. To help you write it, click here. How to properly fill out your statement. If you prefer a digital version of the statement, opt for the e-statement , which works well.

 319.
3. A puncture repair kit

 320.
In the event of a puncture, you will need to act quickly.

 321.
In more and more vehicles, the spare tire is sold as an option and is replaced by a puncture repair kit. The number one priority is therefore to know which camp you fall into:

 322.
> The spare wheel (or equivalent) which will also require having a jack but also knowing how to use it.

 323.
A little reminder of how to change a wheel is necessary.

 324.
> The least manual one with a full anti-puncture bomb , easier to use and which will allow you to drive to the nearest garage. How to use it here

 325.
4. The bulb and fuse box

 326.
Every vehicle must be equipped with working lights (fines of up to €450). If one of your lights or electrical circuits plays a trick on you and stops working, it is essential to have the means to replace it as soon as possible, otherwise you risk being fined in the event of an inspection.

 327.
It is therefore more than recommended to have spare bulbs and fuses on hand.

 328.
5. A pair of sunglasses

 329.
Essential! In both summer and winter, the sun’s rays can make driving difficult. And driving blind (or almost blind) is strictly prohibited.

 330.
6. A phone charger

 331.
Not so you can use your phone while driving, but because today your smartphone also serves as a GPS, and in the event of an accident, you need to be able to use it to alert emergency services. A charger or spare battery might just save the day.

 332.
7. The ice scraper

 333.
If you’re asking your car to spend the night in the cold, at least have something to pamper it with in the morning… Preferably, it has a little built-in fleece glove to protect you from the cold.

 334.
8. Water

 335.
Whether it’s to hydrate yourself in case of intense heat or prolonged traffic jams, or to rinse your hands after a quick mechanical check, water is your car ally!

 336.
9. The “Sleep on site” kit

 337.
You’re a responsible driver, and if your breathalyzer test says “no” after a night out or a meal with a bit too much alcohol, you’ll have to spend the night there. So remember to pack the essentials, whether you’re sleeping in the back of your car or at a friend’s house: a blanket, glasses or contact lens kit, wipes, etc. Everything you need to be fresh and ready to hit the road the next day!

The post Car accessories the top 9 essentials first appeared on https://autocarbuzz.com.
