AppleAtcha is revitalizing Eastern <a href="https://farmflavor.com/kentucky-agriculture/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kentucky</a> by transforming former coal mines into productive farmland.</span></p>
  634. <p class="p2"><span class="s3">“The idea came from collaboration between <a href="http://boothenergy.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Booth Energy</a> and <a href="https://www.continentalheritage.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Continental Heritage Insurance</a>,” said Charles Hamm, AppleAtcha CEO. “They were looking to repurpose the surface mine land they had in Eastern Kentucky and give the local economy a boost by shifting from coal mining to agriculture.”</span></p>
  635. <p class="p2"><span class="s3">The first orchard was planted in Johnson and Martin counties in 2021. AppleAtcha planted 120,000 apple trees on 60 acres. It’s a high-density setup with Honeycrisp apple trees planted 21 inches apart and rows spaced 10 feet apart to maximize production. </span></p>
  636. <p class="p2"><span class="s3">The process of transforming a former Kentucky coal mine into an apple orchard was complex. Site preparation required specialized mining equipment to crush or remove rocks and make the land suitable for planting apple trees.</span></p>

  648. <p class="p2"><span class="s3">AppleAtcha has a goal of creating a vibrant commercial apple orchard with at least 1,000 acres in production on several former mine sites in Eastern Kentucky, so the apple orchard is just the beginning.</span></p>
  649. <p class="p2"><span class="s3">In partnership with the nonprofit organization Community at the Core, AppleAtcha is building an $11.5 million packing and storage facility called the packhouse. AppleAtcha will have a long-term lease to manage the packhouse and provide for year-round storage of apples in a controlled atmospheric storage environment.</span></p>
  650. <p class="p2"><span class="s3">In addition to processing apples from its own orchard, the packhouse will have the capability to process apples from other orchards.   698. <p>Congratulations to our Community Partner, Community at the Core. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $752,000 grant to Community at the Core, Inc. in Debord, Kentucky, to support growth of the agriculture production sector.</p>
  699. <p>This grant will support the procurement of production equipment at a new apple sorting facility. This EDA investment will be matched with $188,000 in local funds and is expected to create 150 jobs, retain 100 jobs, and generate $70 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates.</p>
  700. <p>&#8220;The Economic Development Administration works closely with communities to support locally driven disaster recovery and resiliency efforts,&#8221; <strong>said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo</strong>. &#8220;This strategic, place-based project will provide critical agricultural and manufacturing infrastructure to diversify the economy in a community recovering from flooding as well as shifts in the coal community.&#8221;</p>

  702. <p>This project was made possible by the regional planning efforts led by the Big Sandy Area Development District (Big Sandy ADD). EDA funds Big Sandy ADD to bring together the public and private capital investment and create jobs.</p>
