Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts. – Proverbs 4:23

Making a Choice

The beautiful, well-versed 83-year-old lady fully dressed every morning at 8:00 a.m. sharp, with her hair done in fashion and perfectly applied makeup, is moving to a retirement home. Her husband recently died, which motivated her move.
After many hours of patiently waiting in the hall of the home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready.
As she moved in her wheelchair toward the elevator, she was given a detailed description of her small room, including the curtains hanging from her window.
“I love it,” she said, with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old girl who was just handed a new pet.
“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room; just wait.”
“That doesn’t matter,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide over time. Whether or not I like my room doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged, it depends on how I arrange my mind.
“I’ve already decided that I like it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have the choice; I can spend the day in bed, going through the difficulty I have with my body parts that don’t work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the parts that do work.” – Author unknown

Two Wolves

In a story from Native American folklore, a grandfather explains to his young grandson the inner struggle between good and evil.
“A battle goes on inside us all,” the grandfather begins. “It is a battle between two wolves. One wolf is the embodiment of everything evil, like hate, anger, jealousy, resentment, greed, arrogance, lying, and selfishness. The other wolf is the embodiment of everything good, like love, joy, peace, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, empathy, generosity, compassion, truth, and faith.”
The grandson thinks about those words and then asks, “Which wolf wins?”
The grandfather replies, “The one you feed.”
Apply that lesson to discouragement and depression and their antitheses, positiveness and praise—and you’ve got the key to a happier, more upbeat, and more successful you.
Discouragement is like a wolf pup. Feed it, and it will grow into depression—a fierce, ravenous, full-grown wolf that will turn on you every chance it gets. But feed its counterpart and you will have a strong and sure defender against such attacks.
How can you tell these two wolves apart, so you’ll know which to feed? Whenever you have a thought that causes you to feel discontent, bitter, unhappy, or critical, you can be sure it’s the wrong wolf, stalking his prey. Don’t be his next meal! Feed the other one instead by filling your mind and heart with positive, encouraging, strengthening, and faith-building thoughts.
You may not be able to stop the evil wolf from coming around, but if you’re smart you won’t wait till he does to start feeding the good wolf. And remember, the more you feed the good wolf, the stronger he will grow. Feed him every chance you get, and the evil wolf will be no match for him. When it comes to a showdown, the evil wolf will turn tail and run every time.

– Keith Phillips

Quotes on power of our thoughts

Our thoughts can create and destroy, heal and harm, lift you up and tear you down. At any given moment in time, our thoughts are either fueling a positive momentum for our life, or keeping us stagnant, or sabotaging us.
As a result, our minds are the best tools we have for shaping and controlling how we feel about life and driving us to take the actions we want to take—or stop taking the actions that don’t serve us. Ponder the following quotes:
“Whether you think you can or think you can’t, either way you are right.” Henry Ford “Change your thoughts and you can change your world.” Norman Vincent Peale
“A positive mind finds opportunity in everything. A negative mind finds fault in everything.” Unknown
“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” Albert Einstein
“You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.” James Allen
“Thoughts have power… And you can make your world or break it by your own thinking.” Susan L. Taylor
“Folks are usually about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Abraham Lincoln
“Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.” Mahatma Gandhi
“You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” Marcus Aurelius

– Gemma Kate https://thegoalchaser.com/power-of-thoughts-quotes/

*

Thinking carefully

God is far more interested in changing your mind than changing your circumstances.
We want God to take away all of our problems, pain, sorrow, and suffering. But He wants to work on us first. Transformation won’t happen in your life until you renew your mind and your thoughts begin to change.
Your thoughts are powerful. They have tremendous ability to shape your life for good or for bad. For example, maybe you believed the lie someone told you about yourself when you were growing up: “You’re worthless. You don’t matter.” If you accepted that thought, even though it wasn’t true, it shaped your life.
The way to be careful with your thoughts is to examine them, because some thoughts are good, but others aren’t. Careless thoughts lead to a careless life.
This is one reason you get mentally fatigued: There’s a battle going on in your brain 24 hours a day. Satan is trying to neutralize your mind—your greatest asset in this battle. He wants you focused on negative and destructive thoughts that will distract you from God’s love and goodness. The struggle can be debilitating.
Your thoughts determine your feelings, and your feelings determine your actions. To change your life, change your thoughts.
How can you be careful with your thoughts today?

A man who sought the perfect picture of Peace promoted a painting contest. The artists were asked to paint whatever they felt would portray “Peace”. Some artists painted serene landscapes with sunsets and fields of beautiful flowers. Another painted a still quiet lake with a reflection clear as glass.

Each was amazing and beautiful, but when the winner was unveiled, everyone gasped in disbelief. The title of the winning painting was “Peace in the Midst of the Storm”.

At first glance, the painting looks anything but peaceful. Black clouds and lightning cover the sky. Waves crash down a jagged rocky hillside with raging waters below. How could this be peaceful? Take a close look at the picture. Just beneath the waterfalls (and just above the river of water) you will notice a bird with her nest of babies tucked underneath the edge of a rock. In the midst of a giant storm, this bird found a sanctuary, a safe place to rest her wings. A true portrayal of peace.

Our lives, as we scramble through our days, can be compared to the bird trying to fly through that storm. We fight through traffic. We struggle to get all our tasks done. We become totally stressed over all the “little stuff” that never goes our way.

Now look at the painting again. Just as the bird found refuge under a rock, so can we find refuge in God. Imagine all the troubles in your life being shielded by a rock, feeling just as peaceful as the bird in the painting. Did you know that in the Bible it says that God is our
rock? The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust (Psalm 18:2).

Adapted from:
https://faithfarmfamilytable.wordpress.com/2015/09/08/peace-in-the-midst-of-the-storm/

…

How often we wish for a few crumbs, scraps of peace in our frenzied, uncertain, fast-paced world, filled with tensions between nations, within our borders, our cities, our neighborhoods, our families, and even our own souls. We want peace, but it seems to evade us. We search for it frantically, but it is elusive. Often, we search in all the wrong places.

Is it possible to once again find peace in this turbulent modern world? Yes, beyond the shadow of a doubt! We have little hope within the framework of today’s realities, but if we go beyond this reality, it is possible to find a peace that is impervious to tribulations. Peace that is greater than our human reasoning and is not dependent on external conditions. God is greater than all circumstances and is capable of changing them around to work for our benefit. He can intervene in our lives and give us the solutions that we are looking for. His power is so great that He can transform a tragedy into a triumph. He can give us the peace that we long for. It is entirely within our reach, if we ask Him.

As Nehru said, “Peace is brought about by a serenity of soul.”

Excerpt from the book „Treasure of Peace“

…

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give unto you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27).

These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world (John 16:33).

“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room; just wait.” “That doesn’t matter,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide over time. Whether or not I like my room doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged, it depends on how I arrange my mind.

“Ich habe bereits entschieden, dass es mir gefällt. Das ist eine Entscheidung, die ich jeden Morgen beim Aufwachen treffe. Ich habe die Wahl: Ich kann den Tag im Bett verbringen und mich mit den Schwierigkeiten herumschlagen, die ich mit meinen Körperteilen habe, die nicht funktionieren, oder ich kann aufstehen und für die Teile dankbar sein, die funktionieren.”

– Author unknown*

Two Wolves

In a story from Native American folklore, a grandfather explains to his young grandson the inner struggle between good and evil.

““A battle goes on inside us all,” the grandfather begins. “It is a battle between two wolves. One wolf is the embodiment of everything evil, like hate, anger, jealousy, resentment, greed, arrogance, lying, and selfishness. The other wolf is the embodiment of everything good, like love, joy, peace, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, empathy, generosity, compassion, truth, and faith.” The grandson thinks about those words and then asks, “Which wolf wins?” The grandfather replies, “The one you feed.”

Quotes on power of our thought

Our thoughts can create and destroy, heal and harm, lift you up and tear you down. At any given moment in time, our thoughts are either fueling a positive momentum for our life, or keeping us stagnant, or sabotaging us. As a result, our minds are the best tools we have for shaping and controlling how we feel about life and driving us to take the actions we want to take—or stop taking the actions that don’t serve us. Ponder the following quotes:

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t, either way you are right.” – Henry Ford– Norman Vincent Peale

“A positive mind finds opportunity in everything. A negative mind finds fault in everything.”– Author unbekannt

The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” – Albert Einstein

“You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.” – James Allen

“Thoughts have power… And you can make your world or break it by your own thinking.” – Susan L. Tayl

“Folks are usually about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” – Abraham Lincoln

“Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.” – Mahatma Gandhi

“You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” – Marcus Aurelius

– Gemma Kate https://thegoalchaser.com/power-of-thoughts-quotes/*

Konrad Fernandez

Most of us know of the three wise men who follow the guiding star, and visit the child Jesus with gifts.

In 1895 Henry Van Dyke wrote this beautiful short novel called “The Story of the Other Wise Man.”

What’s the story about? This fourth wise man also sees the same signs in the heavens and sets out to find the Child Jesus; carrying his gifts of a Sapphire, a Ruby, and a very precious Pearl. But nothing goes as planned. He misses his rendezvous with the other three wise men because he is delayed helping a dying man. Now, to cross the desert alone he needs camels and supplies and sells one of his treasures to buy them. He arrives late in Bethlehem after saving the life of a child using another of his treasures. In the meantime, the child Jesus has left Bethlehem.

And after many years looking for Jesus and many acts of charity, he spends his last treasure to save a girl from being sold into slavery. He dies without ever finding Jesus, but as he is dying, he hears the Divine voice saying, “…as you have done for them…you did for me”. His gifts were indeed accepted [by Jesus], and, in a sense, he found God in a deeper way than even the other wise men.

It’s a powerful story! And for me it offers some insights for the Christmas season:

1) When things don’t go our way, when we struggle, feel lost, when we endure hardships and delays, when the goal seems out of reach… This story is a reminder that, in fact, we may be closer to our goals than we think. That we may have traveled further than we realize, and that every delay and set back may be working in our favor in profound and wonderful ways. At the end of our journey, we may see all the hidden miracles which were disguised as hardships. But to see them now is a miracle of faith. And the Christmas story invites us to such a kind of faith.

2) The highest rewards call for sacrifice, patience, endurance and goodwill. We all know that nothing worthwhile comes easy. And as this wise man found his great reward after what seemed like an endless struggle, he stayed true to his cause, persisted, and nurtured within him the desire to do good in spite of every struggle. This is a story of hope. And Christmas urges us to look at any aspect of life where we have lost hope or are losing hope. Can we choose to hope even when everything seems lost, and seek the courage to endure?

3) The greatest gifts the wise man gave God were his acts of Charity. Giving without measuring. Giving repeatedly. Giving even though it cost him dearly. If Christmas is about anything of significance…it’s about giving. It’s about God giving us everything. And about how we continue that cycle of giving by sharing what we have. Perhaps we ask ourselves this Christmas how we can give others our time, our resources, our talent, our listening ear…or maybe just a small gesture to tell people we care about that they are not alone in their struggles. A message of love.

To me, it’s really about these three things. Faith. Hope. And Love. And I believe this Christmas, like every Christmas, can become significant when we become bearers of the Divine light…by choosing faith, daring to hope, and committing to love others…even if in the smallest ways.

Mat 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

When was the last time you walked in the fields, no houses or people, no cars and streets in sight? Just walking, looking at the fields, the trees, maybe some horses, and the beautiful skies, clouds, and the sun spreading its beautiful colors.

I like walking in the fields whenever I get a chance. At the end of summer, when our little family visits the grandparents in their countryside house, I like to take some bags and roam the fields, seeking fruits. When our teenage daughter saw me going out like this, she said: “Daddy is going into the fields like an 18th century man.”

In the eyes of a young teen, growing up with smartphones, TikTok, Instagram, etc., seeing me, living without these gadgets, preferring to walk in nature, I look like an 18th century man!

She doesn’t have to go back that far in history. During my grade school years in the last century, my favorite activity in the summer holidays was visiting close family friends at their farm. They basically lived self-sufficiently. They had a little farm, chickens running around freely, some pigs and cows, giving fresh unpolluted eggs, milk and meat, with their own organic vegetables and fruits. Life on the farm, near God’s creation, kept me busy. I didn’t need television or fancy plastic toys, much less modern electronics, social media and all the entertainment and advertisements of today.

Anyway, back to the 21st century. I like to take some bags and go into the fields, picking apples, plums, pears, walnuts, and potatoes – whatever God provides and is of course something I can pick freely. For example, after the potato harvest, there are plenty of potatoes left on the field, which we are free to pick up, and they even last longer than the ones from the shop! And trees out there have all kinds of yummy fruits – all organic.

After I pick those fruits, we make good use of them. We eat them fresh and make yummy strudels, cakes, and apple puree. I cut up the apples while listening to podcasts during our devotions. Then I bring them to a short boil, blend them and freeze them – without any sugar or other additives. I eat it with my healthy muesli every morning.

Some family friends who are elderly and know about this habit let us pick their fruits and nuts. So, we end up with enough applesauce for the whole year.

We can learn a lot from the good ol’ days, our forefathers and mothers, who lived closer to nature and had more faith in God than people have today. They knew a few things we lost in this modern techno world.

The fact that Jesus lived on this earth and that he died by crucifixion is academically well established also by ancient sources outside of the Bible. There are historical evidences, dating back to just a little over 20 years after His death, which is much less time than the first biography of Alexander the Great, written about 400 years after his death!

What about the resurrection?

Perhaps the most remarkable reference to Jesus outside the Bible can be found in the writings of Josephus, a first century Jewish historian. In the “Testimonium Flavianum”, the relevant portion declares: About this time, there lived Jesus, a wise man, if indeed one ought to call him a man. For he … wrought surprising feats…. He was the Christ. When Pilate …condemned him to be crucified, those who had … come to love him did not give up their affection for him. On the third day he appeared … restored to life … And the tribe of Christians … has … not disappeared.[1]

Some of the greatest proof of the resurrection is the change that it brought to the people who followed Jesus for three and half years during His time on Earth until His death. Yet something made them keep believing in Him subsequently. Were there any eyewitnesses who saw Him being alive again?

Eyewitnesses

There are multiple early first century accounts in the documents that make up the New Testament with eyewitnesses such as:

Mary Magdalene: She turned around and saw Jesus standing there… Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ (Jn 20:14 & 16).

Peter: The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Peter (Simon Peter) (Lk 24:34).

Two Disciples on the Emmaus Road: And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. …And it happened while they were conversing and discussing, that Jesus himself approached them, and began traveling with them (Lk 24:13-16).

The Disciples (first without Thomas) On the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were together. They had locked the doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders (who crucified Jesus). Suddenly Jesus came in and stood among them. He said, ‘May peace be with you!’ Then he showed them his hands and his side. Thomas, one of the 12 disciples, was not with the other disciples when Jesus came. (Jn. 20,19-24)

All of the Disciples: A week later, Jesus’ disciples were in the house again. Thomas was with them. Jesus came in and stood among them. He said, ‘May peace be with you!’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here. See my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’ Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen me but still have believed.’ (Jn 20:26-28)

Seven Disciples at the Sea of Galilee: After this, Jesus appeared to his disciples again. It was by the Sea of Galilee. Simon Peter and Thomas were there together. Nathanael from Cana in Galilee and the sons of Zebedee were with them. So were two other disciples (Jn 21:1-2).

Over Five Hundred People: After that he was seen by over five hundred people at once, of whom the greater part are still alive (1. Cor. 15:6).

James (son of Joseph and Mary, brother of Jesus): Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles (1. Cor. 15:7).Later he appeared also to the Apostle Paul (Acts 9:3-5).

How long was Jesus on Earth before He went to Heaven?

After his suffering and death, he appeared to them. In many ways he proved that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of 40 days. During that time he spoke about God’s kingdom (Acts 1:3).

Summary

These appearances convinced His disciples, beyond any doubt, that He had risen from the dead. And billions of Christians throughout the centuries have testified of personal encounters with Jesus and the power of prayer ever since.

When you don’t feel like celebrating
texts by Marie Alvero, Maria Fontaine and an unknown author
When you don’t feel like celebrating
What if Christmas is here and you’re just not in the mood? You might be worried about the future, feeling sad, or have gone through a great loss? It should be the happiest time of the year, but you just don’t feel like it. … It’s okay. You don’t have to try to fix your pain, sadness or loss quickly, you can’t anyway.

I don’t think even the shepherds watching the sheep on that first Christmas felt anything special, it was just another ordinary cold night in Bethlehem. Their town was crowded with visitors who were there for the census, which just reminded them of Roman rule. Nothing looked particularly hopeful.

Suddenly, angels filled the sky with the message that there was no need to worry; the Savior would be born in their city that night. That changed everything, and suddenly there was hope!

If you are not feeling up to all the festivities of this holiday, try to focus on the Hope that this season brings. Jesus has come and through him redemption for all the wrong we have ever done. We no longer have to be separated from God, Jesus is the link between God and us! For such contemplation, we don’t need decorations and gifts, we can celebrate in our hearts.

Jesus is with us wherever we are, at Christmas and every other day of the year, and He loves us immensely!

New Year’s Prayers and Resolutions
At the start of a new year, many people look forward with a mix of excitement and apprehension to what lies ahead for them, their families and friends, and the world at large. It is comforting to know that whatever the future holds and whatever problems or difficulties we may face, God wants to help us overcome them.

It is not easy to live in today’s world and not be swept up in the “waves” of worry and distress, but it is possible. The secret is in cultivating the habit of not looking at the “waves” but at the One who loves us and will always take care of us. He has promised that He is with us always, through thick and thin, and that nothing can separate us from His loving care. (Hebrews 13:5; Romans 8:37-39).

The Year Ahead
May God make your year a happy one!

Not by protecting you from all the sorrows and pains,

but by making you strong enough to handle them as they come;

Not by making your way easier,

but by making you resilient to walk any path;

Not by ridding you of difficulties,

but by removing fear from your heart;

Not by giving you uninterrupted sunny days,

but by making your face shine even in the shadows;

Not by making your life always pleasant,

but by showing you when people need you most,

and by giving you the strength to be there for them.

I wish you God’s love, peace, hope and joy for the year ahead! –
