21.

From parakeets and monkeys to cats and koalas, our furry and feathered friends taunt us with their meerkat foresights

It was a sure thing. Unanimous. England would beat France and reach their second successive World Cup semi-final. The meerkats at a Sussex zoo declared it, via the medium of clambering into an England flag-decorated bucket of whatever it is meerkats eat. Not a single meerkat put his faith in Olivier Giroud, there was no meerkat foresight when it came to Aurélien Tchouaméni firing a low, long-distance shot into the corner of Jordan Pickford’s goal.

We should have known. World Cup psychic animals have burnt us before, their competence often hovering somewhere around the level of Derek Acorah. As my colleague Marina Hyde notes, this shouldn’t be surprising, given that, y’know, they are animals. And yet, those meerkats did previously predict the Lionesses’ European Championship triumph and when Paul the Octopus repeatedly called results correctly during the 2010 World Cup the world watched. Octopuses are, after all, a very intelligent species.

 42.

From a quenelle salute to World Cup controversy, the brilliant short-fuse striker comes with baggage, and this film does a fair job with some fraught material

A galaxy of major names – including Thierry Henry, Arsène Wenger and Didier Drogba – line up to chip in their two-penn’orth on one of the great footballing enigmas of modern times: Nicolas Anelka, the mercurial boy wonder who burst out of the Parisian banlieues but will probably linger longest in the collective memory for triggering a player strike at the 2010 World Cup and flashing the quenelle salute, widely regarded as an ansemitic gesture, after scoring a goal for West Brom in 2013.

But there’s a bit more to this than your standard sporting hagiography: Anelka comes with a lot of baggage, and this film from French director Franck Nataf does its best to get stuck into some comparatively heavy material. We start at the beginning, when Anelka was a fresh-faced young shaver tearing it up in the local park, before being airlifted into the elite Clairefontaine national youth academy, where Henry was one of his peers.

Anelka: Misunderstood is available on Netflix
Continue reading...

 111.

 112.

I was in the stadium to see Luis Suárez break Ghanaian hearts with his handball. It was cheating, but also an understandable act of self-sacrifice

Almost a decade on, the 2010 World Cup is recalled as a tournament of low-scoring matches, played out amid the distracting honk of vuvuzelas. As is usually the case, the host country showed its best and most welcoming side, rendering happy memories to visitors only to leave a disappointing legacy for South Africa itself.

Every tournament, though, will throw up at least one segue of incredible drama, of unlikely and since-forgotten heroes, skulduggery and adrenaline-surging plot twists. The rest of the quarter-final between Ghana and Uruguay was decent enough. The climax to the 120 minutes made the night unforgettable.

You did not disappoint

The Miracle of Bern. Germany weren’t meant to get very far. German players were all still technically amateurs. Hungary were the Goliaths of world football, having gone undefeated for four years, including beating England – the self-ascribed “inventors of football” – 6-3 the year before and 7–1 just before the World Cup. Hungary beat Germany 8-3 in the round robin, so no one expected Germany to have a chance in the final. Removable cleats were used for the first time, which may have helped in a torrential downpour durijng the final. They made a movie of it. It was Germany’s first World Cup win and it revived the nation after the second world war. It also launched German football on a successful path for the years to come. A Germany fan
Continue reading...

 187.

The Red Devils legend takes on the near-impossible task of selecting his best-ever Belgium XI and says personality is just as important as talent. Now you can do the same with our interactive tool

For my goalkeeper, I’ve chosen Michel Preud’homme. We played together for three years at KV Mechelen. Voted “Best in the World” at the 1994 World Cup; a leader, good on his line. If he was playing today, he’d be in the top three in the world.

Eric Gerets is my right-back. The first Belgian to win the European Cup. A top player, with great determination and a real leader. Laurent Verbiest would be my first centre-back. He was known as ‘Lorenzo the Magnificent’, a talented libero, 20 or 30 years ahead of his time. He died tragically at 27 in a car crash.

 206.

 207.

In open rebellion against their manager, France’s 2010 squad self-destructed as Thierry Henry watched impassively

Thierry Henry had more pressing matters to attend to before he could lose himself in his New York dreamscape [he was joining New York Red Bulls from Barcelona in the summer 2010], starting with his uneasy position within the French national team. How uneasy it was was demonstrated in the lead-up to the South African World Cup, when Raymond Domenech chose to play Henry from the bench in France’s warm-up games against Costa Rica and Tunisia, in which the hitherto “captain for life” was a mere passenger.

In the first of these two encounters, in which Les Bleus actually showed a surprising degree of enterprise and imagination, the armband had been given to Patrice Evra – who’d kept it on when Thierry entered the fray in the second half. Domenech poo-poohed the idea that this was proof of Henry’s declining status within the squad. But more people would’ve been inclined to take the manager at his word if a French TV network hadn’t found out that he’d visited Thierry in Barcelona shortly before this game, in order to strike a deal that would preserve both men’s self-regard and ambitions.

Alongside the correspondence, which has not been verified by the Guardian, Fancy Bears claimed that 25 players had been allowed to use TUEs at the 2010 World Cup, including the former Premier League players Dirk Kuyt, Juan Sebastián Verón and Carlos Tevez.

 272.
Andreas Campomar: how football reflects my continent's soul

 273.

 274.

For Latin Americans, the game provides a rare chance to stand tall against richer nations – writing its history in ¡Golazo! became a personal odyssey

My father had told me the stories . “Che, you know that we were world champions,” he would say. “We may be a small country but at least we’ve won two World Cups.” For a child this kind of fighting talk loomed large in the imagination. In Uruguay the game was everything: “Other countries have their history; Uruguay has its football” had become a national slogan. It imbued me with a sense of national pride.

During the 2010 World Cup my father and I cheered on Uruguay until our very last game, a meaningless affair for third place against Germany. Football had long become our bond; it was the language we spoke together. We loved the flashier aspects of the game: the bicycle kick, the deft back-heel and the art of dribbling. (Our defenders had to have the gall to dribble in their own penalty area, even if it ended in failure.) We wanted guile and skill to trump Anglo-Saxon notions of tenacity and courage.

In Uruguay, where a fitful civil war would persist until 1904, the century played out with a tragedy on the pitch. Born in Brighton in 1871, Henry Stanley Bowles played centre forward for Preston North End before sailing for Montevideo, where he took up an accountant’s position in the London and Brazilian Bank. Having scored the first international goal for his adopted country in 1890, Bowles would have his life cut short nine years later. On 15 August 1899, a tornado swept across the field at Punta Carretas and destroyed the makeshift wooden huts that served as dressing rooms for the players. Poor Bowles, in the wrong place at the right time, had been changing into his strip. This unfortunate incident was perhaps symbolic of the fragile roots that the sport has set down on the continent.

 448.
Judging by local attendances and Bafana Bafana’s results, the four years since have been disappointing. But there is an abundance of talent and youth development is finally a priority
It is now more than four years since South Africa hosted a very successful Fifa World Cup, defying all the sceptics who raised alarms before the event about crime and the readiness of the country’s infrastructure to cope with such a major international event. It was a proud moment for the country.

Now that South Africans have had the chance to digest the implications of their government spending over £2.4bn on six new world-class stadiums and upgrades to roads and airports, has the outlay been worth it ? Has the game of football grown as it was meant to by hosting the World Cup?

 468.
Patrice Evra: from public enemy No1 to France’s understated leader | Stuart James

 469.

 470.
Castigated after France’s players boycotted training at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Patrice Evra has rebuilt his reputation under Didier Deschamps and is sure to start against Nigeria
The footage belongs in the World Cup hall of infamy. Patrice Evra, hands tucked inside his pockets, is stood on the pitch at France’s training base in Knysna, arguing with Robert Duverne, the fitness coach. Raymond Domenech, the France manger, steps in and holds back Duverne, who is furious. Evra heads in one direction and Duverne in the other, leaving Domenech reduced to the humiliating role of reading out a statement from the players explaining why they are boycotting training.

It was an extraordinary scene, one that was played out in front of the world’s media in South Africa and provoked outrage in France. Nicolas Anelka, the man at the centre of the dispute, received an 18-match ban from the French Football Federation. Evra, the captain and leader of the rebellion, was suspended for five games. The real punishment, though, was the damage to Evra’s reputation.
