20.

 21.

Club operate with one of the smallest wage bills in League Two but smart recruitment has them mixing with the big hitters

Crewe travelled to MK Dons for a vital League Two promotion game last Saturday but one man central to the club’s resurgence in the past two years, the head of recruitment, Josh Kennard, was not present. Instead, he travelled 70 miles further, to watch a National League South game between Chelmsford and Bath, a vital scouting trip he hopes could yield results just as productive as a win on the pitch.

Crewe lost at MK Dons, but that they are even in the promotion picture in an ultra-competitive season alongside the big budgets of Wrexham, Stockport and Mansfield owes a lot to Kennard’s meticulous and data-assisted philosophy. The Alex operate with one of the smallest wage bills in the division and the squad consists almost entirely of academy products and signings made by Kennard. Not one cost a fee.

 40.

 41.

Bowler was chairman of League One club from 1987 to 2021

He left following Sheldon report into historical sexual abuse

John Bowler, the former long-serving Crewe chairman, has died at the age of 85. Bowler joined the Crewe board in 1980 and was chairman of the League One club for 34 years between 1987 and 2021. He stood down last March following the publication of the Sheldon report into historical sexual abuse in football.

A Crewe statement said: “It is with deepest sadness that the football club has to announce the passing of our former chairman and director, John Bowler MBE. Further information will be issued when made available and our thoughts are very much with the family.”

 60.

 61.

An Olympic gold medal winner is heading for territory he has never previously charted. Marcelo Bielsa’s pedigree in knockout competitions also includes steering his teams to the finals of the Copa América, Copa Libertadores and the Uefa Cup. Now, at the fourth time of asking, he has finally reached the third round of the Carabao Cup.

As Crewe belied a gap of 51 league positions to provide valiant resistance, it was tempting to wonder if it represented the final frontier for Bielsa. Instead, Kalvin Phillips and Jack Harrison provided a late flurry of goals and, aided by an outstanding cameo from Patrick Bamford, Leeds registered only their third win in a cup match in Bielsa’s four-season reign.

John Bowler said in a statement he had always intended to step aside once the report had been published.

The report came out on Wednesday last week, after being commissioned by the Football Association in December 2016, and was critical of Crewe for not doing enough to protect boys from the serial abuser Barry Bennell.

 138.

Peterborough and Sunderland hope to put last season behind them, Oxford and Portsmouth also look contenders but Wigan’s and Hull’s struggles seem set to continue

It is fair to say Peterborough were miffed when they were bumped out of the play-offs on points per game – “this is the worst day of my life because I think we’ve been cheated” said a typically understated Barry Fry, the director of football – but they will have a chance if they can carry on where they left off. The division’s most prolific side won seven of their last nine matches, scoring four times in four of those and overcoming promoted Wycombe and Rotherham along the way. The £6m sale of top-scorer Ivan Toney was inevitable but the return of Jonson Clarke-Harris from Bristol Rovers, coupled with the emergence of Ricky Jade-Jones, 17, and Flynn Clarke, 20, gives Posh reasons to be cheerful.

 176.

The manager discusses his forensic biology studies, how Thomas Müller made him laugh, and his ‘Dad’s Army lads’

Daytime television can be deemed dreary but, in David Artell’s case, tuning into a couple of timeless crime dramas after training, while a young professional at his hometown club Rotherham United, proved the inspiration for his bachelors’ degree in forensic biology. “Around 2.25pm it was Diagnosis: Murder with Dick Van Dyke and then Murder, She Wrote with Jessica Fletcher and I thought: ‘Yeah, I’ll be good at that,’” says Artell. “I did think: ‘Why do I not tune into something better than the man off Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Jessica Fletcher? But I found them interesting and it all started from there.”

Not that there were too many parallels between his studies – which he started at Sheffield Hallam in 2003 and finished at the University of Chester in 2010, encompassing a postgraduate certificate in biomedical sciences – and those storylines on the sofa. “I suppose it’s a bit like saying Poirot or Midsomer Murders is like being a detective inspector,” the 39-year-old says. “I’m pretty certain the high-ranking police officers of this world do not think Midsomer is anything like a normal sleepy town. It was chalk and cheese, I have to say.”

In-form Bright Osayi-Samuel also netted for Rangers, who were three up by half-time. George Byers struck for Swansea but Lee Wallace’s brilliant volley with 14 minutes remaining and an even better strike from Josh Scowen in added time completed the rout.

League Two Northampton will be in the hat after despatching Burton 4-2. Nicky Adams, Ryan Watson and Charlie Goode put the visitors into a three-goal lead before Ryan Edwards pulled one back. As a result, the League had been “forced to suspend the game and under EFL Regulations, the club is now deemed to be guilty of misconduct and will be referred to an Independent Disciplinary Commission. 240.

Crewe won 2-0 at Accrington Stanley in an extraordinary three-hour FA Cup first-round tie that ended with just one assistant referee after an injury crisis among the officials.

The first referee, Neil Hair, limped off in the 22nd minute and was replaced in the middle by the fourth official, Alan Clayton – but he picked up an injury and was unable to return for the second half. Crewe took the lead through Charlie Kirk in first-half stoppage time, but the interval lasted over an hour as the two sides discussed how to deal with the situation.

 299.

 300.

It has been a long time coming but the wait is finally over for Jack Wilshere, who opened his West Ham United account in the rather inauspicious surroundings of Rodney Parade and in the process scored his first goal in 19 months. The last, for the record, came for Arsenal against Chelsea, when the stakes were a little higher.

At least it was a step in the right direction for Wilshere, whose West Ham career has never really got going since he joined the club last summer. He lasted 81 minutes here, by which time West Ham were two goals to the good courtesy of a tap-in from Pablo Fornals, a £25m summer signing from Villarreal, midway through the second half.

 346.

Scunthorpe and Plymouth should be contenders after their relegation to a division in which Stevenage could be dark horses

There is a vast pool of exciting 40-something coaches determined to make a splash as managers, some of whom are taking their first plunge while others, notably Paul Hurst, are hungry to kick on. Determined not to allow a 14-game reign at Ipswich define his reputation, Hurst has the look of a managerial catch for Scunthorpe United, given his success at Grimsby and Shrewsbury where he surpassed expectations, eking every sinew out of his players. At Glanford Park, however, Hurst will have to cope with the expectation that comes with the territory of being fancied for an instant return to League One. The signing of Andy Butler, who started his career at the club, seems a sensible addition.

 389.

In an extract from his new book the former footballer discusses going public over the abuse he suffered and the impact that had

There were conversations I needed to have. People I couldn’t just spring this on. The hardest conversations were the ones with Mum and Dad. This was their story, too, wasn’t it?

They’d been there from the start, however much sometimes I’d tried to push them away. This man had been a part of their lives as well as the lives of their children. I wasn’t judging them but I was afraid that other people might. I understood the pain and guilt they felt as parents but I’ll never really know how they dealt with that grief and anger together, how they found the strength not to be destroyed by Barry Bennell.

 407.

 408.

The footballer tells for the first time how a relative of Barry Bennell cast a grim shadow over his family, years before the paedophile coach began abusing him

On the night before we were due to meet, Andy Woodward took himself away to spend some time alone. He wasn’t feeling great, was the truth. He wanted to find a bit of peace and he wanted to be in a place where he could remember a time in his life when everything felt so much more innocent.

His old primary school was pulled down a few years ago to make way for a housing estate. But the playing fields are still in use and it was here, as a 10-year-old, that he remembers bringing the ball out of defence, playing for his first junior football team, and trying a shot from the halfway line. The ball flew into the top corner and his father, Terry, ran on the pitch to give him a hug. And now, more than 35 years on, something drew Andy back to that same spot. He found a place to sit under a tree and stayed there for longer than he could even remember, lost in his own thoughts.

 427.
• Carl Everall given three-year community order by court
• 28-year-old was sacked by Crewe in February
Crewe Alexandra, one of the clubs most heavily implicated in football’s sexual-abuse scandal, have announced they have sacked one of their academy coaches because of a police investigation that has led to him being convicted of attempting to groom an underage girl.

Carl Everall, formerly Crewe’s head of foundation, was suspended by the club in September because of what the Football Association described as “a safeguarding and police matter” and he appeared at Chester crown court last Thursday to face a charge of engaging in sexual communications with a child. Everall, 28, pleaded guilty and received a three-year community order with a 35-day rehabilitation activity requirement. He was also ordered to go on a sexual offenders’ treatment programme and told to sign the sex offender register for five years.
