71.
Our longtime cat, Giant Kitty, passed away a couple of months
72. ago. She had a good, long life (15 years) and we miss her terribly.
73. We’d decided that we would like still like to have a cat in the
74. house, so we planned to get a rescue cat. Giant Kitty was about 3
75. years old when she was adopted, and our original plan was to get
76. another adult. We were also open to getting a younger cat, as we
77. thought it would be fun for Jacob to watch a kitten grow into

84. Saturday and spent some time with the residents. There was a wealth
85. of beautiful animals there, all waiting for loving homes. In the
86. end, we went with Ziggy (née Trucker), whose personality was
87. immediately apparent. He’s a 3-month-old domestic short hair mix.
88. He spent the first few hours hiding behind and under things in my
89. home office, but it didn’t take long for his social nature (and
90. love of wiggly toys) to win out.

163.
<img src="https://www.freeke.org/i/2017/unshaven_airpods.jpg"
164. alt="See Airpod in ear. I need a shave." title="" width="270"
165. align="right"> I’m often an early adopter when it comes to
166. Apple gear. I picked up my Apple Watch, iPad, and a few other
167. things on launch day. When Apple introduced Airpods in 2016,
168. though, I held back a while, for a few reasons.

169.

170.
I’m not a huge fan of earbuds. I think I’ve got slightly
171. funny-shaped ear canals, so they never quite feel right in my ears
172. (i.e. they always feel like they’re on the verge of falling
173. out)

174.
Though I’m by no means an audiophile, I’m not a big fan of
175. open-ear headphones. They don’t really isolate you much from
176. outside sound (which has its pros and cons, more on this later),
177. and... I like bass.

178.
At $159, they’re not an impulse buy. The only time I’ve ever
179. spent more than $75 on a pair of earphones was for a pair of
180. Sony studio
181. monitors (which were totally worth it, BTW.) These are also
182. tiny, which potentially translates to “easy to lose.”

183.
Bluetooth largely sucks (but Apple seems to have eliminated
184. most of the pain points -- see below.)

185.
They were a 1.0 product with a lot of unproven tech.

186.

187.
Let me get the other disclaimers (the caveats mentioned in my
188. title) out of the way first. If you’re not completely inside the
189. Apple ecosystem, these are probably not for you. Like a lot of
190. Apple products, a lot of their virtues come from their integration
191. with the rest of the ecosystem. If you’re an Android person with a
192. Windows or Linux laptop, keep looking.

193.
If you primarily buy earphones/headphones for audio quality,
194. keep looking. These are (quite) decent as far as earbuds go, but
195. they’ll never sound as good as a set of high-end closed-ear
196. phones.

197.
<img src="https://www.freeke.org/i/2017/airpodfins.jpg" alt=
198. "fins for yr. airpods" align="right" width="250"> <a href=
199. "https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B072KH4BZQ">The solution
200. to my “earpods fit weird in my ears” issue was surprisingly
201. simple.

202.
That said, I finally found a use case that justified picking
203. them up. We live in an open plan house, and I like watching TV at
204. night (really, it’s the only chance I get.) I’ve tried other
205. solutions for balancing the TV volume, but generally speaking I’m
206. either in a situation when I can’t hear programming well enough to
207. enjoy it, or I’m annoying others in the house. The killer
208. feature for Airpods, for me, is that I could pair them at the
209. iCloud account level. This means that after pairing them once on my
210. iPhone, they automagically became accessible from my Apple Watch,
211. my iPad, my MacBook, and, most importantly, my Apple TV.
212. Plop them in your ears, then hold down the play/pause button until
213. the audio output device selector pops up. There is no step
214. 3.

215.
I use them sometimes from my phone (mostly when grocery
216. shopping), but where they’re most useful is at the office (paired
217. to my MacBook Pro) and on the aforementioned Apple TV. Since
218. they’re not completely audio-isolating, they work well in an office
219. where people may actually have need to get your attention, and
220. since you’re sitting down, you’re not really worried about them
221. falling out. They also work surprisingly well for conference
222. calls.

223.
I haven’t even gotten into how clever the charging case is, or
224. how slick and painless it is moving them between your various
225. devices, or how much better the AAC compression sounds than
226.
227. A2DP.

228.
In short, they’re great and I’m very glad I bought them.

414.
This is adapted from an email I sent to an internal "gadget
415. fan" mailing list at work in response to a question someone asked
416. about controlling lighting electronically.

417.
I went “simple” and I’m pretty happy with it.

418.
I bought <a href=
419. "https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SGLKWQW">this bulb from
420. Amazon.

421.
It’s made in China and sold under several different brand names,
422. most commonly “Flux” and “Magichome.”

423.
You can get the WiFi RGBW version from Amazon (and a domestic
424. seller) for ~$35.

425.
If you feel comfortable shopping via Alibaba (I don’t) you could
426. probably get it for ~$20.

427.
There are several client tools for interacting with them. I’ve
428. used one
429. written in Go and an (easier to work with, IMO) <a href=
430. "https://github.com/beville/flux_led">one written in
431. Python.

432.
<a href=
433. "https://threatpost.com/iot-botnets-are-the-new-normal-of-ddos-attacks/121093/">
434. It doesn't do the dumb thing (UPnP on the open internet) so no,
435. my light bulb isn't helping to bring down Twitter.

436.
In addition, if you live in the iOS universe there’s <a href=
437. "https://www.npmjs.com/package/homebridge-magichome">a plugin
438. that makes it work with <a href=
439. "https://github.com/nfarina/homebridge">Homebridge (and hence
440. HomeKit.)

441.
I can tell Siri to control my lights. Useless, but fun.

442.
More practically, I wrote a Python script that turns on the lamp
443. in my son’s room in the morning and gradually eases him up with
444. subtle color changes.

445.
It kicks off from a cron job running on a <a href=
446. "http://www.freeke.org/ffg/tech/computers/os/linux/raspberry_pi_server.html">
447. Raspberry Pi. (It doesn’t have to be a Pi, of course — any
448. Linux machine or Mac would work.)

449.
I’m sure it could be made to work from Windows, too, but that’s
450. Somebody Else’s Problem. 😁
