text-align: center;">Another friend suggested I build it out with a planter box

and line it with backer board.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> I made a paper pattern of the shape to make the tiles to fit last December for the back of the fountain.

Our neighbor, who is magnificent with tools said he could build the planter type box in the front of the half table and seal it with backer board.

It started to rain in Los Angeles for months and the project went on hold.
<div class="separator" text-align: center;">Then last month, July 2017, he did the construction. The artist gallery space had not changed much during the 2 year renovation but the main library was really altered and very remarkable.
The new renovations were really interesting. They had taken off the cottage cheese texture on the ceilings and found lathe and plaster frescos below that were pretty beat up. They framed a few of the pieces to show the inspiration and had recreations of the designs painted on the ceilings. Each room had it's own palette. As I looked from room to room, I could see through the opening to the others and the combinations were really magnificent. Go see for yourself at the Brand Library in Glendale, CA.

Tonight's the night. Many of her paintings are created in the garden. One piece from her ongoing UNSTill Life series entitled "Summer" is also on view.

Other notables are her enchantment with the huge ballerina/clown at Rose and Main in the framed painting "My Barofsky". Like the famed Venice Artist Jonathon Barofsky who created the clown, Lieberman has added strings of numbers to the piece as he was known for numbering everything he made. That androgenous oversize sculpture seems to typify the Venice spirit. The piece hung in Rosendahl's office for the last five years.

$5 Palm Tree posters from Lieberman's monporint at 'St. Jives by the Sea' days are available. Their bright flashes of color as they bloom represent the best part of the life cycle. They show promise and hope.”

Yes, they do. But this is also, obviously, a lot of weight for a delicate subject to bear. Lieberman’s display of seven oversized paintings in the U-M Hospital’s spacious entry level showcase is meant to shoulder this burden. For each painting—some as large as an oversized five by four foot—is an expressionist’s delight due to its rich, multihued intensity.

"Sunset"

“With this series of paintings,” she says, “I compress beauty of the world into a focused arrangement of flowers, while pushing the spinning complexities of life out to their border.

“There’s an abstracted peripheral complexity here,” Lieberman concludes, “but my aim is to provide a focal point—a lively-yet-calming place where the viewer can rest. I believe if you can engage the power of focus, the rest of the world’s spinning becomes more manageable and less urgent, while the power of art becomes more persuasive and transformative.”

This is an interesting artistic strategy, since the floral genre has tropes that any enterprising talent has to follow, whether with fidelity or transgression.

Among the floral genre restrictions is the balance of palette as weighed against the work’s essential compositional structure. Lieberman’s acrylics allow her to expressively vary the appearance of her work while also reworking her chosen motif.

Working in palettes that can range from contrasting primaries to complementary color schemes, Lieberman varies the tenor of her work. Each work features an arrangement where a vase sits at the center of composition with the flowers jutting forth. She thereby harnesses her penchant for color through a strategy that’s unusually dynamic, given her genre’s constraint.

Two five- by four-foot paintings—“Genie’s Garden” and “Sunset”—illustrate Lieberman’s varying strategy. Both paintings feature a vase set on a table with blooming flowers. But “Genie’s Garden” has a relatively complementary palette whose range animates its pink vase set against a mottled border, while the flowers themselves serve to supplement the painting’s internal harmony.

“Sunset,” by contrast, is far more abstract, with undulating pigments swirling around equally abstract red blossoms in the work’s center. Where some Lieberman paintings tend to abstract the table upon which the flowers and vase sit, she’s instead carefully articulated its design in this instance, thereby making the painting exceedingly fluid.

Lieberman’s “Celestial Nosegay” is the exhibit’s masterwork, where she pulls together all the tricks of her trade to craft what is seemingly a final observation. Indeed, “Celestial Nosegay” tells us everything she’s intended with this exhibit. Her essential optimism is illustrated by a tablecloth that looks like a globe. The painting’s centered blue vase is set against an equally rich blue sky. It features a lively arrangement of purple flowers set against foreground turquoise daubs. These explosive acrylic dashes and daubs create a chromatic tension—the restless motion that must mingle artistically to create the origin of life.

Granted, this is all rather astronomic for the humble floral genre; but then again, it’s the joyful artwork that so readily crystalizes an artist’s intent. And in this regard, Lieberman’s “Celestial Nosegay” does the job quite well.

“Gardens: UNstill Life Acrylic Paintings” will continue through Feb. 6 at the University of Michigan Health System Gifts of Art Gallery—University Hospital Main Lobby, Floor 1, 1500 E. Medical Center Dr. Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily. The French term "Collage' means to cut and paste. It is exciting to reuse and repurpose acrylic paintings that didn't work out well the first time around. there is a wonderful acrylic glue that is great for collage and used for a medium for the paint itself. They range from gloss to matt with satin in between and can be pourable or thick as paste.

I started a large body of collage works I like to call the"Personal Archaeologies" because they were an attempt tot clear off my work table. it seemed like it would take an archaeologist to dig through all the bits of things I found so splendid and saved.

The "Personal Archaeologies" series of collages have been ongoing since 1990. Early versions were in response to great stamps collected from participation in "MAIL ART", ongoing since graduate school in 1980. Work with interior designers left the studio cluttered with bits of fabrics and scraps of paper that seemed to beg for a creative resolution. Parts of monoprints, older paper paintings that didn't quite "Work" and general special pieces of paper from travel and various interests made their way into the fabric like woven surfaces of the collages as I cleared a path through the studio desk top. These collages are like a history and intended to be mood pieces.

Joyce Lieberman

"Spring Essence"

Acrylic and collage on paper

16x14" mounted on 30x22" Stonehenge paper

"Spring Essence" has a cut out crown on top which adds to the irregularity. Again I am using 'edge consciousness' to showcase the beautifully deckled edges of the paper which I have saturated with acrylic paint. It is a very luscious effect.

Another group of collages that I have been working on are mostly painted but have shapes organized and overlapping on them also . That is the 'Venn Diagram Series" which in itself means, overlapping shapes. The Venn Diagram series came from a grade school concept about overlapping sectors. I was experiencing a situation where everyone had a different perspective and was trying to organize where we could intersect with our sensibilities. The Venn diagram came back to me. It is a chart of you and I, and the other and how we can agree, but also have our areas where we don't overlap at all. The materials are acrylic and collage on paper.

http://www.liquitex.com/awardprograms/aotm/200609/artist.cfm

Now that we recognize that acrylics are glue themselves in addition to beautiful color, let me give you some advice about working with these glue like paints.

Never leave your brushes loaded with paint out of the water. Clean the paint off thoroughly with soap and water before leaving them to dry. They will dry to a yucky solid that will render them unusable. I also prefer using jars or bottles of paint rather than paint from tubes. If you put acrylics on your palette, you must use them in the current session, They won't save. They will become plastic hunks of unmanageable yuck. And now my best tip for all acrylic painters. When you get your jars of new paint home to your studio, open them up and put Vaseline on the rim. Yes, Vaseline. The reason is your paint jar will never not open because you have let some paint dry on the rim and the darn thing is glued together. This is very frustrating and worth the attention of putting vaseline on the rims.

Things to make me happy, lots of beautiful paints, things to cut up and jars that open.

Happy painting and collaging.

Acrylic Paint and "The UNStill LIfe" by Joyce Lieberman 2/8/2011

Acrylic Paint and "The UNStill LIfe" by Joyce Lieberman 2/8/2011

I love acrylic paint. I have worked with oil, watercolor, gouache and slips on clay. All have their fine traits but for fluidity, speed, layering of color and strength, nothing beats acrylics. In addition to being mixable like oils, they have the flexibility to go from the transparent like watercolor to the opaque like gouache and if mixed right, the luscious full body of oils.

Acrylic can be used on so many surfaces including canvas, paper, and wood. In addition to being a great way to spread and layer color, the paint itself has a glue quality that allow for easy options of collage. My personal favorite surface is Stonehenge Archival paper manufactured now by Legion Paper. http://www.legionpaper.com/stonehenge/Joyce-Lieberman.htm I use Stonehenge as it has a deckle on two sides. I love the edges of the paper, you can see the stacked fibers and it takes acrylic paint really beautifully.

Stonehenge is pretty durable for painting and takes a lot of abuse; water, scratching into with pencils, etc. and also masking with gesso or acrylic paint. If a part of the paper is marked with opaque paint and another part is still unpainted it can be scratched into or incised and then painted with a more watercolor application of acrylics. The original opaque paint acts as a masking for the other watery layers and the contrast is great. It layers beautifully.

I start my works on paper and canvas with an ashe (pronounced ash-AY) which is Japanese for first gesture. I often have a sketch in one hand and a paint brush in the other. These are especially good for the large sizes that seem to require a dancing kind of energy. I put on some music and begin. Lately I have been sponging the surface of the canvas with a color to start, something to work into. Sometimes it's just there to be obliterated later. If I do that, I really start with the layer of color and then begin with a sweeping gesture of the general picture. Drawing is essential here. I try to keep it loose yet with a lot of information in the first few lines which become the bones of the painting.

Acrylics dry swiftly so I don't have to wait too long to begin painting into the first layer and still keep the original color pure. I love patterns and something I call 'edge consciousness'. I love to be mindful of the edges of shapes touching and get involved with the line where that intersection happens. A good example of "edge consciousness' exists between the forms on my diptych "Day and Night UNStill Life", 30x44" acrylic on Stonehenge paper. The shapes are really strong and overlap and intersect. This piece is also a good example of acrylics opacity with a few variations of texture.

Joyce Lieberman

"Night and Day UNStill Life"

Acrylic on Stonehenge paper, 30x44"

The "UNStill Life" has been an ongoing series of mine since 1990. The idea is that the still life is in motion. I like to think about a mobius strip, like a ribbon that is twisted into a continuous loop, instead of a horizon line as the basis for the picture. Life is chaotic ,but if there is a focal point like the flowers on the table, all the patterns and shapes that go to the periphery become manageable. A strong focal point and a sense of motion is the basis of my "UNStill Life" series.

Take the still life and make it swing. Zhenya was an instructor at the Getty Museum many years ago when my husband and I took a two Sunday workshop in modeling the head in oil clay on a support. We loved the class and along with the instruction was a great 17th/18th century collection of busts for us to view including many of Napoleon.
Zhenya used living male models and made her format tall and slender. The space she showed them in was a fluted Rotundra in a restored Hollywood Building by Marcella Ruble and her husband, the Principles of the Law firm. The 12 Apostles stood approximately 7 feet tall by 2 feet wide. It was something to be surrounded by her slightly expressionist version of highly skilled draughtsmanship. Link to images http://www.artslant.com/la/events/show/130788-xii-apostles-paintings-by-zhenya-gershman
Over the weekend, we stumbled down our street toward the beach at the Pacific Ocean here in Venice and came upon Anne Faith Nicholls new CURIO shop with a yellow old timey vertical sign amoungst the artist's studios.
New to the neighborhood, she has a very 'on trend' style that relates to neighboring shops like OBSOLETE and to the Barkers at the beach offering a glimpse of a two headed turtle. Her works are embued with the turn of the 20th century and the 21st. Signage and anime and the traces of Mark Ryden's big eyed characters in a narrative and Lari Pittman's references to silhouetted Victorian design, they seem very current and old timey
concurrently. She also sells antiques picked up from her travels to Paris, London and Venice, Italy. www.annefaithnicholls.com
Links for both are on the Other Artists Links List to the left

"Trees" collection to be shown at Lido Gallery in Birmingham, Michigan

Lido Gallery will be having their Grand Opening in their new space in Birmingham, Michigan on October 8th.
My collection of six canvases demonstrating my love of "Trees" will be part of the opening exhibititon.
