23.
IBM has released what's new for IBM Connections Cloud for July 2017. Here is some of the updates

Verse for iOS 9.4 performance, scalability, and security enhancements
Verse mobile for iOS just got better with enhancements to performance, scalability, security, and ease of use. This release contains general performance improvements for Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts views.

Connections: Get started fast with guided tours
New guided tours provide first time users and experiences users alike with a quick view of main features and actions on the Home Page, Communities, and Files. If you cancel out of a tour, you need to clear your browser cache of cookies to have them run again. The new tours replace the "Welcome Boxes".

Connections: More options for designing a Community home page
Now you can design modern Communities with new navigation, new layouts, and defined app styles.

Connections: Save time by copying a Community
When you want to create a new Community, it's easier to copy an existing community rather than creating one from scratch. Copy a Community to create a Community with the same layout and structure as the existing community. When you copy a Community, you get the title and description, access settings, and apps. What isn't copied are Community members, files, app content, and images.

Connections: Sync folders and files to your desktop
Files introduces My Drive, a repository where you can organize files and folders, whether you created them or they were shared with you. File or folders you add and edit in My Drive are automatically synchronized to your desktop so you always have the latest version of the content. Syncing is a way to automatically replicate changes to your content, whether you created it or whether it was shared with you, even when multiple people are acting on the content. You can access the files from your local desktop, or from another device, and feel confident that you always have the latest version.

Connections: Navigation bar responds to your window
Connections Cloud features a responsive navigation bar, which means the list of applications displayed will adjust to the width of your window. As you reduce the width of your window, applications that no longer fit on screen move to the More menu. As you enlarge your window, more applications become visible. If your window is very narrow, and no applications fit, they are all listed under one Apps menu.

See the previous IBM Connections Cloud enhancement posts right here (and previous SmartCloud naming ones) on IdoNotes

  43.
The Canon Pixma MG3620 Wireless Printer is a affordable and easy to use wireless printer. That is after you get it connected to the network in your home. I walk you through the app setup and some quick features in the review video above. As someone that does not print often, the times I do want to is when I am mobile.

Packaging
The printer comes well contained with the power cable and two ink cartridges. No cable for a direct PC connection is included (for those that want to use the Canon Pixma MG3620 that way. It is meant to be a total wireless solution for all your devices. The entire experience is driven by the Canon mobile app found free for both iOS and Android called Selphy. We will talk about the application more below.

The Printer Controls
Being that the Canon Pixma MG3620 is an under $50 (at time of writing) wireless printer, I did not expect a ton of features and controls on the physical printer itself. As you can see in the below image you have no LCD screen and a handful of buttons.
The one error light only notifies you there is some kind of issue. The application really helps show you error codes when you are trying to print.

You should carefully look at the enclosed help guides that come with the printer. They show how to use a combination of buttons to do things like reset the wireless. After a few readings I got a good feel for those. The rest was self explanatory. Turn it on, choose the type of paper size (or use the app) and pick color or b&w.

The Paper Loading
The front of the printer is where you have both the paper load and the output as you see in the image below. It does not hold a ton of paper so keep that in mind for larger print jobs. The main idea of this printer is for the mobile quick print of a document or photos onto 4x6" glossy. However, you cannot have both types of paper loaded and ready at once (like larger printers) so you need to know in advance you have what you need loaded before sending a remote print command. Otherwise your photos could come on expanded on full paper.

The back of the Canon Pixma MG3620 was easily opened for paper jams. I never had one occur in testing. I did not other reviewers online stating they sometimes had jams. I just made sure to fan out the paper and loaded only a handful of sheets. I was careful not to stuff the tray.

There is a slider I show in the video where you easily adjust the holder for the paper size. Make sure you get the glossy type for photos facing the correct way in the tray. The doors close easily to make this printer fit on tiny shelves.

The Scanner
This is pretty straight forward. It did a decent job scanning documents that had well defined text or images. It will scan up to a regular 8x10" piece of paper. Legal sized documents will not fit as I show in the image.

Wifi Setup
Wifi setup is the most painful part of this entire Canon Pixma MG3620 printer. It really should not be this hard. I spent 90% of the time getting it hooked up when I have tons (and I mean tons) of things on wifi at home. This ranks up with some of the more difficult. One of the problems is connecting to the printer from your device first, pushing the settings for the wifi to the printer and then having it all online. I constantly had to battle with making the lights blink a certain way to make sure it was in the mode to set up.

Remember above when I said learn the button controls from the help file? Well that is how I finally got it all working. A lot of clicks, pushes, app refreshes and I was online and working.

The Application
The application from Canon was easy to find and install. The look and feel is very basic but provides the necessary things you need for quick mobile printing. One thing I want t point out is that the application is not fancy or sleek. It is purely functional. There is a lot that can be added and it often throws you out to webpages on the printer or even their help site. Much of this I feel could look cleaner.

I cover a bit more on the application in the video. Some extra thoughts and wishes revolve around:

look and feel refresh

better ways to work with wifi setup

better links for solving error codes

easier navigation of the file system for selecting documents and pictures to print

Conclusion
For the price point the Canon Pixma MG3620 is a winner of a wireless printer. I set my expectations lower based on the cost and I had no disappointments in quality or function. The wifi setup may be tough for some users. Once you are past that the ease at which you can print has you wanting to start right away.

The print quality will not be as crisp as some more expensive printers. With a single color ink cartridge I did not expect that either. They will always get you on ink costs with any printer. This is no different. But doing the math, this will be cheaper for a quick print than using a service. For higher quality image printing you will need to stick with a store type solution.

Also if my reviews are helpful, even if not buying, click the Yes on Amazon and the thumbs up on YouTube. Please see all the product reviews here on the IdoNotes blog and subscribe to the SpikedStudio channel or product review playlist on YouTube . We also have a ton of smaller CES2017 review on the Spiked Studio blog site.

  63.
IBM has released what's new for IBM Connections Cloud for June 2017. Here is some of the updates

Verse

Verse: Preview attachments while composing a message

When you compose an email message, you need to be able to preview an attachment while in Draft mode so that you're confident you're sending the correct information. Now you can! Click the attachment to preview it in the Verse window. Click X to close it and return to composing your message.

Verse: Replied to and forwarded icons on messages

Now you have a clear and simple way for seeing which messages in the message list have been replied to (left arrow icon) and which messages have been forwarded (right arrow icon).

Verse for iOS 9.4: Performance, scalability, and security enhancements

Verse mobile for iOS just got better with enhancements to performance, scalability, and ease of use. This release contains general performance improvements for Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts views.

Ease of use and scalability enhancements include:

Notifications are now triggered on every mail

Option to sync all mail

Streamlined calendar interface

Sort contacts by first or last name

Tap to Facetime or tap to text from a contact record

Landscape view on iPhone

Integration with the IBM Connections mobile app when clicking on links

AppConfig standards based MDM support

One change to the way notifications works in Verse iOS 9.4 is the scope of notifications that you receive. Prior to version 9.4 you only received notifications from contacts who were explicitly added to your "Important to Me" list in the People tab. Starting with version 9.4, you'll receive notifications for all emails and calendar invitations that are sent to you. We made this change to be more consistent with the behavior of the Verse app in on-premise environments as well as to be consistent with other mail apps in the market. We intend to add the ability for you to revert to the previous behavior through a setting at a later point in time.

Verse for Android: Certificate-based authentication

Certificate-based authentication provides an easier and more secure login mechanism by allowing clients to authenticate with a certificate instead of a password. Verse for Android now supports three authentication options:

Traditional username/password

Certificate-only authentication

Certificate and username/password

Note: Certificate-based authentication is available only for on-premises customers. Administrators must generate and distribute client certificates for each user.

Connections

Connections: Navigation bar responds to your window

Connections Cloud features a responsive navigation bar, which means the list of applications displayed will adjust to the width of your window. 83.
IBM sent a very confusing email about DB2 on Cloud and renaming. I will just leave this here

On June 22 a number of products will be renamed in our Db2 family of products
That's right, Db2
"DB2 on Cloud" will be renamed "Db2 Hosted" and "dashDB for transactions" will be renamed "Db2 on Cloud.

Now notice the DB becomes Db in the new name. I am not sure if that was a typo or on purpose to differentiate the products. Either way taking a product name and swapping a new product into it already confused me.

  121.
IBM has released what's new for IBM Connections Cloud for May 2017. Here is some of the updates

Verse

Verse: Calendar delegation

Need to view or manage the calendars of others? You can now use IBM Verse to add people who have given you access to their calendar using IBM Notes. Add them to the Delegation panel, and open any managed calendar in a separate browser tab. When a new calendar notice arrives, you'll be alerted by a red badge in the calendar's browser tab.

Alain Amadou gave Kelly Hardart delegated access to manage Alain's calendar using IBM Notes*. See how easy it is for Kelly to set up and monitor Alain's calendar in IBM Verse.

1. Get the button to open the Delegation panel

The first thing Kelly needs to do is get a button added to the navigation bar. The button will open the Delegation panel where she can manage calendars.

2. Adding names to the Delegation panel

If someone had already given you access to their calendar using IBM Notes, you can search for this person in Verse and add them to the Delegation panel.

3. Monitoring delegated calendars

* For this release, to give someone access to manage your calendar, you must use IBM Notes. See How do I give someone access to manage my calendar?

Verse: Automatically show remote images

Messages that contain remote images can pose a security risk. Up until now, if you wanted to see an external image, you had to click Show Images in each message containing external images. However, if you are willing to trust external images, you can have Verse automatically show remote images for all messages.
There's a new setting in Mail and Calendar Settings > Security where you can set a new default to Always show remote images.

Verse Android: Improved responsiveness to screen overlays

Verse on Android now has improved responsiveness when a screen overlay application is present. Screen overlays are apps that draw on top of other apps and dim the screen. Previously, Verse was purposely unresponsive when an overlay app was present. With the release of 9.5.4, Verse on Android will again respond to touches when a screen overlay is present.
MaaS administrators can block screen overlay apps by using a configuration file for the Traveler/Verse application with prohibitScreenOverlay=true set. Once set, the setting can be disabled only by using a configuration file with prohibitScreenOverlay=false. Simply removing the key is not sufficient. For more information, see Using Maas360 with IBM Verse for Android Devices.

Connections

Connections: Navigation bar responds to your window

Connections Cloud features a fixed and responsive navigation bar. No matter how far you scroll, it will stay at the header of your page for easy access. Applications listed there will also adjust to the width of your window. As you reduce the width of your window, applications that no longer fit on screen move to the More menu. As you enlarge your window, more applications become visible. If your window is very narrow, and no applications fit, they are all listed under one Apps menu.
Note that clicking an application in the navigation bar opens that app's page. IBM Verse now supports live text extensions. Many IBM Notes users are familiar with the concept of live text, where developers can write widgets to detect certain types of text within a message such as package tracking numbers and write an action to occur when a user clicks on the text. Verse recognizes specific patterns of text such as an address or a monetary value, and brings that text to life with actions you can take. Live text lets you perform various business actions, expanding the scope of resources relative to the task at hand. View an address on a map. See a monetary value. Convert a currency, and so on.

Only Web Widgets are supported for Verse. 159.
IBM and Cisco partnered together to integrate Cisco Jabber, Cisco Webex or Cisco Spark with IBM Connections. Here are some things we found in testing the integrations. Of course, we presume you have licenses for Cisco and IBM Connections.

Your organization needs to choose a standard chat client and direction. You have numerous options with IBM Connections Chat including Sametime, Connections Chat and more. However, only one can be configured for all of the icons and links in the IBM Connections interface. This means the business needs to pick a product. Once ou swap the configs, the entire organization is affected for chat. If they do not have Jabber installed they could be missing communication and awareness will not be working.

Choosing a new UI/product means more overhead. Having another chat service outside of IBM Connections just means you have more work to update, install and troubleshoot. Having it all on one product is the simple approach, but you may miss function that is not offered only with IBM Connections Chat

Switching between any of them is quite simple. With a few basic requirements and a couple config lines, it is not hard to swap between what service is being used. Keep in mind that the change affects everyone for chat features. Meetings are a bit different.

Meetings gives you more options. You will need the URL of your organization's WebEx site to properly configure IBM Connections. A side note is that if you want full support to include personal meetings then the WebEx id must match the IBM Connections Cloud id. Otherwise personal meetings are not an integrated option (they can still be done manually). Meetings can be deployed for everyone or some people

Our testing from there proved it to be successful and work easily. Making everyone switch to another chat program for the testing was not fun because chat is all or nothing. Having the option for the rich meeting environment of WebEx was appreciated by many. Jumping to another platform always frustrates someone though.

  178.
home8 has put together an Elder Care Security Kit including a security shuttle (hub), wide-angle and remotely controlled movable camera, a panic button and two tracking sensors. We look at the control app and more in this review.

Overall, the home8 Elder Care Security Kit is a good collection of gadgets to give you a better feeling that your elder family member is safe and can reach you (and you them) at any time. You can even peek in via video when needed. See the full review as we break down the equipment and application below.

The Security Shuttle
The security shuttle (or hub) has a built in router with firewall ready to go. It supports standard 802.11 b/g/n and also has a ethernet port on the back. I chose to locate this near somewhere I could use the ethernet, yet still centrally locate it in the house. It has a built-in 80dB siren that can be triggered with the panic alarm and remotely. The shuttle itself is a very thin plastic and it is incredibly light in weight. There is blue and green status light along the front that are very bright. Internally is has 4GB of storage but there is an alternate USB 2.0 port on the back for adding external storage as needed.

We had no issues getting this working right away. Plugging it in and connecting the app from our mobile device (more on the app below) was simple. Make sure to centrally locate the shuttle to hear the siren and also give range to the panic button and sensors. They include a small quick start guide but nothing more. I would hope for a more advanced guide online.

The Twist HD Camera
The camera is a winner for ease of use and function. The Twist part of the name comes from the ability of this 100 degree wide able lens camera to rotate 300 degress via the application. Tilt setting must be done manually, but the pan ability is all remote controlled. The camera has night vision, a built in ability to listen to audio and even speak through the camera. It has a microSD storage card slot for up to 64GB to capture whatever video you need with alerts and triggers.

Panning was a bit slow but always worked. The ability to listen always worked. The ability to speak always worked but sometimes could be very quiet. For an elderly person with hearing issues this could be a hindrance for that feature. Night vision worked very well and the quality of the images were great in lighting. The app will let you capture video events (triggers or alarms) from all the cameras and watch live at any time.

Panic Button
home8 made to be so simple for anyone to work. A decent sized red button on a large white plastic case. It is not waterproof, so keep it away from showers. But the clip on the end, and the included lanyard, allows the elderly to wear this on their neck, hang it on a door or even a wheelchair or walker. A quick press kicks off the siren and sends notifications (all depending on your settings). We had good range with using it. Just keep in mind the Security Shuttle should be centrally located for both the siren and range of the panic button and tracking sensors. 300 feet line of sight is the maximum stated distance. Walls and basements reduce that greatly.

Tracking sensors
The sensors are small, not waterproof and worked right away. They do not come with any clips or ability to hang. They have an odd shape we show in the video and you are forced to use the provided 3M sticky strips to mount them. We can see that being easily dislodged or falling off. We hope they reconsider and make a clip or clasp for it. I would love to mount this to a walker, not just a coffee maker or pill container. The sensors supposedly work up to 300 feet in line of sight. Nowhere in a house do you have 300 feet line of sight. So use some testing and make sure the Security Shuttle is centrally located for best coverage.

The home8 Application
This review area could be huge. So let us summarize and allow the video to cover the rest. The home8 systems have tons of capabilities. THe app is designed to let you do everything for all of the systems. We wish they had some scenes or options to reduce the homescreen on the app to what I bought. For example, we do not have the medicine kit nor temperature sensors. We do not need those huge options available on the screen, they just add complexity. Even advanced security features that are not part of this kit seemed exposed in the app.

We did appreciate how easy ti was to allow additional family to be added as users. So you could share viewing ability and tracking. There are many notification options for family and a place to store local emergency numbers. This means the app can then push the number to the phone so you can quickly make those calls. You can store doctors or anything else in there you need.

The app never crashed during any usage. Some of the ways to get to configurations could be done through various paths and clicks. There is no advanced help via the app. Like screen demos and how-to steps. That was disappointing. The FAQ link in the app was a wide variety of things, but nothing specific to setup or detailed instructions.

Overall
This is a good kit that I see they put together from other options they have. home8 has a nice suite of security products and add-ons, but chose to put this combo together to target elderly care. Add on the medication tracker they offer and you have a great way to keep tracker of the elderly, or anyone with needs, at home that just need that extra set of eyes and communication.

You can find this kit on the home8 website, Amazon (affiliate link) and even Best Buy (affiliate link) in our searches. Prices varied greatly, so make sure to check them all.
