76.
We all have suffered through IBM Domino backup and restore issues. HCL Domino 12 brings us a new interface, new server tasks and backup and restore capabilities. Let us take a peek inside what is offered:

As of Domino 12, functionality to back up and restore Notes databases and their associated transaction logs is provided with Domino servers.

Right out of the box you inherently get control, with server commands, of backing up and restoring databases even to point in time. This does exclude files like the notes.ini or DAOS so you still need alternative backup solutions to cover yourself there. Or have a facility to store those on a regular updated basis. Of course, HCL Domino 12 does it with a new administrative database.

A new database, Domino Backup (dominobackup.nsf) provides an easy-to-use interface to configure backup and restore of Notes databases and templates. New server tasks, Backup and Restore, use the configuration in dominobackup.nsf to back up one or more databases and to restore individual databases on demand.

The list of features go on and I look forward to finally havnig an integrated solution to simplify backup strategies around HCL Domino. Between open databases, loose files, transaction logs and then DAOS it has been a tiring journey.

Read the rest of the early published information on HCL Domino 12 backup and restore

  93.
For years, with IBM Sametime, we had to use some older administration monitoring screens for Sametime Meetings or get creative with tools. HCL Sametime Meetings has a new whitepaper on Kubernetes monitoring using open source tools.

The authors of the HCL Sametime Meetings monitoring whitepaper have been around since the early days of Sametime, giving valuable insight into what you should begin with and step by step how to set it up using open-source Grafana and Kibana (which sound like twins). You will need servers to run these tools but they can be expanded for service across many of your enterprise systems and networks. Not just for this case.

At 30 pages long, the whitepaper goes into great step by step details about installing, configuring and creating dashboards for many areas of HCL Sametime Meetings. The Kubernetes pod infrastructure running HCL Sametime Meetings will require you to grow to learn what each pod does and and how they interact. For example, a pod for recorder is different than one for recordings. One is the agent that sits in meetings and becomes the recorder, while the other manages the actual finished recordings. Persistent meetings rooms are available, so a catalog pod must keep track of those.

The amazing part of where we are now in HCL Sametime compared to even five years ago, it the simplistic ability to scale as needed using Kubernetes. The monitoring in this case study information allows you to see and learn from the trends and behaviors of your usage of the meeting services. Over time, as firing up and joining meetings stays in our daily routine, the growth of meetings services needs to mature. Not only in capabilities from the vendors, but in scope from of usage and planning by your organization.

I would take a read of this before even going down the Kubernetes path. Or if you started already, make sure you are watching the right pieces up front and expand your monitoring from there. You can download the full PDF of the HCL Sametime Meetings on Kubernetes whitepaper or visit HCL knowledgebase for KB0088100

As of Feb 1, 2021 I started as Deputy General Manager working across quite a few groups in a multifaceted role. Product management base, sprinkle some SME skillset feedback and top with a lot of exploration into a new role.

While I cannot go into full details yet, after only a week I am excited to combine my complex background of skills into one instead of just picking one part when I was out looking during Covid. 127.
I took a much longer break in blogging, podcasting and videocasting than I originally anticipated. Of course, the world pandemic extended it a bit further when Covid-19 changed how we work. Let me back up toward the end of 2018.

After 20 years at Connectria, it was time to take a sabbatical and relax the mind. I took six months to travel, rest, reflect and look ahead. In April of 2019 I landed at a great match. Just when I started looking, a company started looking for someone to fill a unique slot. The position blended messaging, cloud, API, governance, and layers of types of management skills. I was the manager, SME, pseudo architect, program manager, product manager and part time engineer on areas I had long time skills in (like SMTP, SMS and cloud scale).

I played a role with multiple hats. As the Senior Manager, I had an outstanding team of engineers I managed to architect, build and deploy a serverless and stateless cloud based solution. The entire platform needed to be scalable on demand, following numerous global privacy policies (PII, GDPR, CCPA, PCI and others) while being served via a secure API gateway based on Kong. The messages being sent across the platform would be SMS and email with two-way communication automation built in. Tens of millions of messages would transverse the platform monthly. Success was had months ahead of schedule. Testing was just about to begin in production.

Then Covid-19 hit and the furloughs started. The platform had to go live immediately. With the flip of a switch (not really but pretend someone did) the SMS was put into action and my team was put into furlough, then dismissed when they knew 2019 would not see any recovery. The second half of 2020 can be summarized as learning Google Cloud Platform on my own to get my certificate in GCP and the hunt for the next adventure.

Enter into 2021 and the next posting in a few days time will be the announcement where I landed.....

They also slightly changed the look of the Chromecast but since it sits behind the TV at most houses you never notice.

See It. Stream It.
The idea behind Chromecast has always been the ability to stream content from all your mobile devices. I have been a Chromecast user since it first came out when set top boxes were very new or expensive. You can watch movies, shows, live TV, YouTube, share photos all from any family device.

Setup has been easy since the very first one. Plug Chromecast into a HDMI port, connect to it and start streaming. once you start streaming you can use your phone or tablet like normal which is a big bonus.

High-speed wireless connectivity
Built-in 802.11ac Wi-Fi connects to the Internet through your wireless home network (wireless router required and sold separately).

Compatible with your existing HDTV
Easily connects to high-definition televisions with HDMI connectivity.

Something else I love is the integration with my new Google Home. Just say what you want to play from any compatible content and you are in control hands-free. You must have Google Home, Chromecast and using the right apps but it worked very well.

You can get your hands on the Google Chromecast now online at http://bby.me/8mht4 and in stores. Now back to me telling Google Home what I want to watch on a TV that did not have a connected device before.

#ad @BestBuy @madebygoogle *IMAGE
