23.
home8 has put together an Elder Care Security Kit including a security shuttle (hub), wide-angle and remotely controlled movable camera, a panic button and two tracking sensors. We look at the control app and more in this review.

Overall, the home8 Elder Care Security Kit is a good collection of gadgets to give you a better feeling that your elder family member is safe and can reach you (and you them) at any time. You can even peek in via video when needed. See the full review as we break down the equipment and application below.

The Security Shuttle
The security shuttle (or hub) has a built in router with firewall ready to go. It supports standard 802.11 b/g/n and also has a ethernet port on the back. I chose to locate this near somewhere I could use the ethernet, yet still centrally locate it in the house. It has a built-in 80dB siren that can be triggered with the panic alarm and remotely. The shuttle itself is a very thin plastic and it is incredibly light in weight. There is blue and green status light along the front that are very bright. Internally is has 4GB of storage but there is an alternate USB 2.0 port on the back for adding external storage as needed.

We had no issues getting this working right away. Plugging it in and connecting the app from our mobile device (more on the app below) was simple. Make sure to centrally locate the shuttle to hear the siren and also give range to the panic button and sensors. They include a small quick start guide but nothing more. I would hope for a more advanced guide online.

The Twist HD Camera
The camera is a winner for ease of use and function. The Twist part of the name comes from the ability of this 100 degree wide able lens camera to rotate 300 degress via the application. Tilt setting must be done manually, but the pan ability is all remote controlled. The camera has night vision, a built in ability to listen to audio and even speak through the camera. It has a microSD storage card slot for up to 64GB to capture whatever video you need with alerts and triggers.

Panning was a bit slow but always worked. The ability to listen always worked. The ability to speak always worked but sometimes could be very quiet. For an elderly person with hearing issues this could be a hindrance for that feature. Night vision worked very well and the quality of the images were great in lighting. The app will let you capture video events (triggers or alarms) from all the cameras and watch live at any time.

Panic Button
home8 made to be so simple for anyone to work. A decent sized red button on a large white plastic case. It is not waterproof, so keep it away from showers. But the clip on the end, and the included lanyard, allows the elderly to wear this on their neck, hang it on a door or even a wheelchair or walker. A quick press kicks off the siren and sends notifications (all depending on your settings). We had good range with using it. Just keep in mind the Security Shuttle should be centrally located for both the siren and range of the panic button and tracking sensors. 300 feet line of sight is the maximum stated distance. Walls and basements reduce that greatly.

Tracking sensors
The sensors are small, not waterproof and worked right away. They do not come with any clips or ability to hang. They have an odd shape we show in the video and you are forced to use the provided 3M sticky strips to mount them. We can see that being easily dislodged or falling off. We hope they reconsider and make a clip or clasp for it. I would love to mount this to a walker, not just a coffee maker or pill container. The sensors supposedly work up to 300 feet in line of sight. Nowhere in a house do you have 300 feet line of sight. So use some testing and make sure the Security Shuttle is centrally located for best coverage.

The home8 Application
This review area could be huge. So let us summarize and allow the video to cover the rest. The home8 systems have tons of capabilities. THe app is designed to let you do everything for all of the systems. We wish they had some scenes or options to reduce the homescreen on the app to what I bought. For example, we do not have the medicine kit nor temperature sensors. We do not need those huge options available on the screen, they just add complexity. Even advanced security features that are not part of this kit seemed exposed in the app.

We did appreciate how easy ti was to allow additional family to be added as users. So you could share viewing ability and tracking. There are many notification options for family and a place to store local emergency numbers. This means the app can then push the number to the phone so you can quickly make those calls. You can store doctors or anything else in there you need.

The app never crashed during any usage. Some of the ways to get to configurations could be done through various paths and clicks. There is no advanced help via the app. Like screen demos and how-to steps. That was disappointing. The FAQ link in the app was a wide variety of things, but nothing specific to setup or detailed instructions.

Overall
This is a good kit that I see they put together from other options they have. home8 has a nice suite of security products and add-ons, but chose to put this combo together to target elderly care. Add on the medication tracker they offer and you have a great way to keep tracker of the elderly, or anyone with needs, at home that just need that extra set of eyes and communication.

You can find this kit on the home8 website, Amazon (affiliate link) and even Best Buy (affiliate link) in our searches. Prices varied greatly, so make sure to check them all.

Also if my reviews are helpful, even if not buying, click the Yes on Amazon and the thumbs up on YouTube. Please see all the product reviews here on the IdoNotes blog and subscribe to the SpikedStudio channel or product review playlist on YouTube . We also have a ton of smaller CES2017 review on the Spiked Studio blog site.

  63.
IBM Connections is releasing an update that is replacing the Like with a heart icon. It will universally replace "Like" and in some places the happy face icon. I am torn by this decision.

As you can see in the above image, the heart icon allows you to let the author of the file, blog, status update or comment know that you love it. I did say love it since the heart usually means love.
In the business world I think the 'like' meaning was so much better. Even Facebook adopted 'like' with some added ones for laughter and crying and of course Love with the heart, There are so many issues and contexts associated with using 'love". I can only imagine someone saying "they went in a loved all my posts, comments and pictures. That was creepy". It just adds connotations I am sure was not intended but is one of the cultural things I can see not working well everywhere.
What do you think? Passwords are now saved in encrypted storage, so once you enter it you are not prompted for it again.

Connections

Connections: Like something? 101.
IBM has released what's new for IBM Connections Cloud for March 2017. Here is some of the updates.

Verse Mobile: Android users now can view mail as threaded conversations

Verse Mobile is introducing visual grouping of messages and their replies into threaded conversations or threading. You have the option of viewing messages individually or as a grouped thread.

A thread is shown as one item in the Inbox or folders

Forwarding rather than Replying starts a new thread

Changes in subject do not start a new thread

Enabled by default

IBM Mail Support for MS Outlook: Accumulate more than 30 days of mail

As an IBM Mail user on MS Outlook, you can accumulate more than 30 days of email up to
50 GB.

Typically when you first migrate your mail and sync to the cloud, you download 30 days of existing mail locally. What's new is that now, after initially downloading 30 days worth of email, you can over time accumulate up to 50 GB of mail without any time limit. For example, after six months, you'll have seven months of local mail. The accumulated mail is carried over if you switch to a new computer or you create a new Outlook profile.

IBM Mail Support for MS Outlook: Calendar rich text content

By default, Outlook users who have IBM Mail Support for MS Outlook (IMSMO) can now see Calendar rich text content in the description field (tables, fonts, and so on) instead of plain text. Outlook users can also insert rich text into Calendar entries. There is no change to the attachment limitations in Calendar entries at this time.

Developers: Extend the navigation bar to add menu items

While we told you about this new extension point last month, we've updated the description to give you the correct help link.
See Managing applications for Verse or the Top Navigation Bar.
Add, modify, or delete menu items in the Verse or Connections Cloud navigation bar. Organization administrators can now extend the navigation bar in the following ways:

Add links to the top level navigation bar

Add new menus (and menu options to the menu)

Hide (disable) existing links at top level or inside a menu

Hide (disable) an entire existing menu

Developers: Extend the Verse mail send command to hook before sending

IBM Verse is introducing an extension point to allow developers to call other services when a user is about to send a message. This extensibility point allows businesses the opportunity to ask users to validate actions or information before proceeding to send a message.
For example, some companies like to ensure that every email meets security requirements before it's sent. Some countries may prohibit sending work emails after a certain hour. In some countries, similar names are so common that companies want their employees to confirm recipients before sending.

Note that the extension cannot force users to make a change; it can just advise them that they should. Look for the ability to disable send in an upcoming release.
See the Verse extensibility documentation

Developers: Extend Verse to create a custom name picker

IBM Verse is introducing an extensibility point to invoke a custom name picker when composing. This extensibility point is designed to give organizations, system integrators, and business partners the ability to develop their own directory search solutions.
Why write a custom name picker for IBM Verse? In some countries, similar names are so common that companies want their employees to see additional information about recipients when choosing a name. A custom name picker allows users to search for recipients using various name filters. Or a name picker might help narrow a name search to a certain locale.

For example, when a user composes a message, the To field is clickable

The name picker then appears, covering the message body. The user can drill down by location or department to find the correct name:

For a tutorial and instructions on creating a name picker:

Name Picker Tutorial

Verse extensibility documentation

We want your opinion of IBM Verse

How likely are you to recommend Verse to a friend or co-worker? Beginning this month, we will be posing this question to random users at random times. Not everyone will get the survey, but we thought you'd like to know that it's coming. Thanks for helping us become the best mail and calendar program on the planet.

SmartCloud Notes

Administrators: New process for when SmartCloud Notes mail is over quota

Effective immediately, when a user's mail file is over quota, a number of new messages are temporarily held for delivery, instead of immediately returning a non-delivery or failure notice back to the sender. Also, users whose mail files have reached quota are now notified about this issue.
The following list describes what happens when a mail file reaches quota:

Messages (up to 1,000 - subject to change) sent to a user whose mail file has reached quota will be held for 3 days (subject to change) so that the user can take action to reduce the mail file size.

Users will receive an email that they have reached quota and there are messages waiting. They are advised to take action such as deleting or archiving messages. If users don't take action to reduce mail file size and empty trash the held messages will be returned to the sender after a period of time.

Held messages are stored "first in first out". If the held messages exceed the limit (1,000) then the oldest messages will be returned to the sender making room for newly received messages.

No configuration is required. This enhancement is being enabled for all users.

Previously, messages sent to a user whose mail file was over quota resulted in a Non-Delivery Report (NDR) being returned to the sender. Depending on the client used, users who were over quota might have been notified that they were over quota.
Again, no configuration is required, this feature has already been enabled for your users. We are already temporarily holding messages for your over-quota users. We suggest that you encourage users to delete or archive messages, and then to empty trash.
If you have any questions please contact IBM Support by submitting an online Service Request. You may also refer to the Support Information page for additional contact information

Administrators: Reset password API for SmartCloud Notes

This API allows applications to reset the Notes ID file password for ID files available in the SmartCloud Notes ID Vault. The new password is passed as an HTTP header X-HTTP-Query-Password. Password length must be at least 8 characters
For more information, see Reset Notes ID File Password.

Connections

IBM Docs: New financial formulas

IBM Docs has new financial formulas for the Spreadsheets editor.

CUMIPMT function

CUMPRINC function

DISC function

FV function

FVSCHEDULE function

IPMT function

ISPMT function

NPV function

PMT function

PPMT function

PRICEDISC function

PRICEMAT function

PV function

RECEIVED function

TBILLPRICE function

XNPV function

Meetings: Prompt participants to join call in-progress

When a moderator starts the audio or video portion of Connections Cloud Meeting, participants now receive a notice asking them if they would like to join. 177.
NuBryte Touchpoint is a smart hub/smart touch panel that fits into existing lightswitch boxes. You control numerous things like lighting, fans, an internal intercom, security and even use Alexa voice commands now. With a sleek design and just large enough touchscreen, the Lucis Technologies NuBryte Touchpoint can fit into any home decor.

While I was immediately curious how this compares to some of our reviews on hubs like Wink (see our review), I wanted to run this review as a new homeowner looking for some modern controls just entering the smarthome foray of products. Ease of installation, configuration and use were key factors we went after.

The NuBryte Touchpoint is available for single and double gang lightswitch boxes currently. They are definitely looking at models for larger three and four switch gangs as well. The wiring on the back is labeled so well and a great instruction booklet comes with the product. Their support is just a call away to help you with any questions on the installation. It took me about 8-9 minutes to install, which included turning off the power to the switch via the circuit breakers before I started. Please remember to do that.

The Touchpoint fit in easily and immediately was able to turn on and off the light using the switch that sits behind the touchscreen, Make sure to test this first as it will let you know you did your wiring right. The touchscreen snaps on easily by lining up the connection port and pressing firmly. You are then ready to configure all the options you want and start using it immediately.

In the settings menu there is a built in wizard to help expedite the process. You can also manually configure every setting. The very first thing you should do it connect to your wifi (2.4gHz network) so you can start pulling updates and allowing the mobile app to connect. I had no problems getting it to connect and it found my wifi easily. The rest of the settings are thing such as screensavers, proximity awareness, time settings and more. All of the Touchpoint panels must be on the same Wifi network, router and subnet to see each other.

The camera at the top, that we talk about in the video, has a privacy shutter. This allows you to slide it over the camera lens guaranteeing no video can be taken. This does affect one of the security features we cover later. The camera itself is wide angle with a 720x480 format that gets stored in MPG4 at 8fps. Not HD quality but enough for the videos it takes for security alerts.

The interface of the touchscreen has four options on the sides and then the main menus in the large LCD area. On the sides you can access the intercom, security, lights and main home screen. The home screen has choices for lighting, weather/temp, energy consumption, clocks/alarms and settings. I can see them easily adding more options for the home screen through software updates.

The built in proximity sensor can allow the touchscreen to illuminate automatically. This is great as a night-light or to pick up motion. This same sensor is used with the security mode and becomes highly sensitive at a longer range.

The intercom feature can only be used between two or more NuBryte Touchpoint systems. Currently, you cannot use the mobile app to communicate nor can you listen to a panel. You can talk to a specific room or broadcast to all of the panels in the house. This is a great way to enable a full house intercom system with other advanced features.

The security feature is interesting to us. While there is no need for any subscription services, a trigger will make the connected lights flash and the panel to make noise with a 100 decibel alarm. The camera is also activates to take a video of whatever it sees in the wide angle view. A good distraction for anyone breaking in, but I wish an external siren could be activated to alert neighbors. Or even silent mode with the alert sent to your device. You could then have the video and be calling police. I think what we are asking for is more granularity and options in configuring the security capabilities.

Lighting controls were pretty slick. Being able to turn off all connected lights in one button is nice. You can also drill down into each room and even dim or brighten with pinch and zoom. It remembers your last brightness setting when turning the lights on and off. What I need is some integration with other lights like Lifx so I can also control colors and scenes. There are many lighting modes, even vacation type schedules to be configured. We did not go deep into this because users basically expect this capability now. Even having lights come on as you pass by and dim as you leave is possible. There is a lot of capabilities with the built-in sensors.

Temperature shows for the room the panel is in as well as outside temp and forecast. Humidity for the current room was a nice touch, mainly in basement areas. There is even an alert for bad weather coming. When you configure you city/location you will get the forecast for the day and even next five.

The energy tab shows the energy usage of connected lights to the NuBryte Touchpoint. If the daily usage was higher than average it does flash that screen. This is not monitoring the entire home by any means. Now I do wonder if you can have a rollup report of all lights connected to all panels in the home when you have multiple Touchpoints installed. I could not find that documented as a feature anywhere.

The mobile app installed on iOS 10 without incident (but would not find the panels on iOS 9). We quickly connected and paired our Touchpoint and had control after creating a required user account. One immediate thing I did not like from a UI perspective is while the colors and main menu items were the same, the icons were not the same. Compare the image at the top with the mobile screenshot below.

As you can see security is on the main mobile screen, but on the side on the panel. The calendar icon is on mobile while the time icon is on the panel. Things like that just seem odd mainly when someone may be color-blind. Learning two icons sets was weird to us. But the mobile app worked great and had no crashes or errors. We could turn on and off both lights and security with the same clicks (security screen is different on mobile than on the panel once again).

We did not get to test the new Alexa integration but imagine it is as simple as all the other connected devices just yelling to turn things on and off. Or like Nest to change the temp. I wish they would also add lock controls that connect to the same wifi. They have also promised some IFTTT, Zigbee or Z-Wave and other vendor integrations are coming soon. We look forward to those changes and putting other NuBryte Touchpoint panels in the house to get a whole house control experience. Couple this with Wink Smart Hub and you pretty much have control over everything.

You can get the NuBryte Touchpoint on their website and on Amazon at http://idonot.es/nubrytetouchpoint (affiliate link). The pricing seems to be in line with other hubs and entries into this area. With the touchscreen and software updates, Lucis can offer many enhancements and features with the product. Light controls, integration with the thermostats, Alexa voice, mobile alerts and more make this a good choice. The mobile app will grow but we hope they keep the UI as simple as it is today. Allowing us to create scenes of controls (and even robots that do things for us) across numerous Touchpoint panels is a hope that we have. While we would have to replace a whole panel to get better cameras, HD will soon be a required standard to compete with ones like Nest.

Also if my reviews are helpful, even if not buying, click the Yes on Amazon and the thumbs up on YouTube. Please see all the product reviews here on the IdoNotes blog and subscribe to the SpikedStudio channel or product review playlist on YouTube . We also have a ton of smaller CES2017 review on the Spiked Studio blog site.

http://idonot.es/nubrytetouchpoint

While cool looking with images and bold text, the boxes stagger and make it so hard to read.

In this example the tiled rows all start even at the top. But they allow different sizes so soon there is no semblance. Making sure you read everything turns into a column approach. Now in some cultures that is acceptable. But for most you read left to right, row to row. Not down, scroll up and back down.

You then even end up with huge wasted space at the bottom s one column goes longer than the other. I will let the above image speak or show for itself.
