41.

Scotland, when they do qualify for a major tournament, have an excellent track record (pun intended) of accompanying songs. And with Euro 2020 that run continues...

 42. The post Scotland Win At The Euros first appeared on Football and Music.

 43.

44. …with their music.

 45.
There you go. Our first clickbait headline.

 46.
Usually at around this time, just before a major tournament we post a summary of tunes created for the national teams at said competition. If you’ve seen the last couple of tournaments the amount and the quality of the output was, well….

 47.
Because of YouTube and the like, it has enabled anyone with a computer to create their own homemade song to inflict upon the world.

 48.
We braced ourselves again for these Euro 2020 finals but because of the pandemic which led to the postponement this potential onslaught didn’t happen.

 49.
Yes there are a few England-centric tunes out there, as always. But if you look at the date the song was uploaded, many of them are from previous competitions a few years back. All the uploader has done is change the title from Euro 2016 or World Cup 2018 to this year’s finals. You don’t fool us like that.

 50.
But there is some new material especially done and addressing the current tournament. There are two in fact which we are highlighting here. And both of these emanate from one nation: Scotland.

 51.
If you look at the previous posts in relation to the Scotia national team, you’ll see that they like to belt out a few (half decent) tunes. This year being no exception.

 52.
We know that football songs are no longer fashionable but we are glad that there’s still a few out there who are still willing to put in the effort. But also making sure that some good comes from these tunes. Both examples below will benefit charities from the sales, so just buy them anyway eh ?

 53.
This first one is by Neil Grant, a Scottish musician who has written a number of fitba songs for various teams before. 20% of each sale goes to SAMH. They are Scotland’s national mental health charity.

 54.
Grant, who also stars in the video below writes:

 55.

“…It’s a huge honour for me as a musician and fan to unleash this fun track to the Tartan Army fans. If the song/video raises the positivity levels in any way whatsoever, then it’s job done!”

 56.
“I took a huge gamble in completing the track in Autumn 2019 to stay ahead of the song writing pack. The video itself was filmed the very last weekend before lockdown!”

 57.
“Given the tough year that many have endured, I am delighted that Scottish Mental Health charity SAMH will receive money through every download sold.”

 59.
» Download the song from their website. It is also on the Spotify and ITunes.

 62.
This other one is by a band – or collective based in Glasgow called Randolph’s Leap.
63. This is from their About page:

 64.

Randolph’s Leap are a Glasgow-based musical project ranging from a solo act to an eight-piece band. Nairn-born Adam Ross and friends have been making pop music for unpopular people since 2010.
66. …Recent years have seen the band curate a series of sell-out music and comedy events in Glasgow titled ‘I Can’t Dance To This Music’, record repeat sessions on BBC 6Music and perform across the UK, including as tour support for James Yorkston (Domino Records) and Canadian band The Burning Hell. “

 67.
This track has some commentary from Scotland’s shootout with Serbia which led to their qualification. The band with the song and that commentary are featured on this BBC football article.

 68.
All proceeds from the track will be split between Street Soccer Scotland and LEAP Sports.

 69.
Street Soccer Scotland is a social enterprise which uses football to tackle issues of isolation linked to poverty and social exclusion.

 70.
LEAP Sports is a Glasgow-based charity which aims to increase LGBTIQ+ representation in sport through work such as their ‘Football vs Homophobia’ campaign.

 74.
Both songs are excellent and help local charities. Scotland 2 – everybody else, nil.

 75.

 76.
UPDATE: The above two highlighted because they both benefit charity but there are more Scotia tunes out there.
77. » The Courier newspaper has a list of all of them including the above. In the list they mention The Cundeez but don’t have the music. Here is their video just released.

 78.
2ND UPDATE: There’s another that benefits charity.
79. This is by Papa Shandy ft. Clann An Drumma and 50% of all sales will be donate to Men Matter Scotland:

 101.

In the tradition of this website and the unimaginative titled posts, here is another. The tunes today are all about the tall bloke at the back, the weirdo always shouting things. The footballing version of the drummer in the band.

 102.
These are clichés and probably untrue until you remember René Higuita, John Burridge or Grobbelaar.

 103.
But this isn’t just about the so called “crazy” ‘keepers, there are plenty of tunes singing about their heroics. Starting with…

 104.
Kasey Keller

 105.

106. The first American goalkeeper in the Premier League. Keller’s career in England started with Millwall in 1992 before signing with Leicester, then over to Rayo Vallecano and after that was at Tottenham initially as a backup but then played two full seasons as first choice.

 107.

 108.

 109.
We go back to 10th February 1998 though. It was the CONCACAF Gold Cup Semi-Final between the U.S.A and the then World Cup holders, Brasil.

 110.
The match was in a stalemate until the 65th minute when Preki – remember him, was a Everton and Portsmouth, popped up to put the USA in the lead. After that it was all hands on deck from the Brazil team and a relentless pressure to get an equalizer. But despite them taking up target practice on their oppositions goal, none of them got past Keller.

 111.

 112.
After their defeat Romario remarked: “That is the best performance by a goalkeeper I have ever seen. It was an honour to be on the pitch with him.”

 113.
The now defunct band Barcelona (also known as Barcelona DC) after watching this match were inspired to go into the studio and record this:

 114.
 115. https://www.footballandmusic.co.uk/fitba/Barcelona-Kasey_Keller.mp3
 116. » Barcelona – Kasey Keller

 117.

 118.

 119.
Packie Bonner

 120.

121. This legendary Ireland goalkeeper needs no introduction. Bonner was a one club man. Played for Celtic from 1978-1998 and made 483 appearances. He went to three major tournament finals starting with Euro 1988, then to the 1990 World Cup and the World Cup finals in 1994.

 122.

 123.

 124.
It was the 25th of June 1990 which is long remembered by Republic of Ireland supporters. Ireland had made it through the group stages and faced Romania in the Round of 16. The match itself was also possibly the longest one that the fans had ever witnessed. After 90 minutes and extra time the game ended nil-nil and it came down to penalties. The winner to face Italy in the next round, the loser to go home.

 125.
Four of the Romanian pens were scored and Ireland had four scored as well. It was back with Romania for their fifth but Daniel Timofte put the ball too close to Bonner and he saved it. David O’Leary then scored the last penalty to put Ireland through.

 126.

 127.
Margo is Margo O’Donnell – the elder sister of Daniel and the one who gave young Daniel O’Donnell a start in the music business. Margo is the ‘Queen of Irish country music’. She recorded this tune about her fellow Donegal born countryman.

 128. https://www.footballandmusic.co.uk/fitba/Margo%20-%20Packie%20Bonner.mp3
 129. » Margo – Packie Bonner

 130.

 131.

 132.
After two examples of goalkeeping heroics breaking things up with an embarrassing moment for this next shot stopper:

 133.
David Seaman

 134.

135. After signing for a then-record fee Seaman was the Arsenal number 1 from 1990 until 2003. In his time won the First Division title, the Premier League twice, the FA Cup four times, the League Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup. He was the undesputed England No.1 from Euro ’96 until 2002.

 136.

 137.

 138.
That memory that he’d rather you’d forget isn’t the one you are thinking about. Or that one. It was in the F.A. Cup Semi Final in 1991 which took place a Wembley before it became standard for all the semi’s to be played there.

 139.
It was the Year ending in 1 and it was Spurs and it was Gary Lineker, along with Paul Gascoigne at the peak of his game. Tottenham went two-nil up thanks to a sweet Gazza free kick which gave us an immortal line from the commentator Barry Davis:

 140.

 141.
He’s not going to have a go from there…. he is you know…!

 142.

 143.
Lineker got the 2nd with Arsenal’s Alan Smith getting one back before Lineker struck again to seal the win.

 144.

 145.
Gascoigne’s free kick is at 30 seconds in the above video. The Lineker strike to make it 3-1 starts around 2 mins 35 seconds. It was after this goal went in that Barry Davis uttered another line:
146. “…And David Seaman will be very disappointed about that…”
147. Which isn’t remembered as much as the other quote apart from if you are a Spurs fan. Also if you were a musician as well as being a Tottenham supporter because this long remembered match and that moment was immortalised in song.

 148.
These musicians formed a band and released a one sided flexi-disc. Via Wikipedia:

 149.

The Lillies were an indie rock band formed as a collaboration between members of the bands Cocteau Twins (Simon Raymonde), Lush (Miki Berenyi, Chris Acland) and Moose (Kevin McKillop, Russell Yates).

 150.
They released only one song titled “And David Seaman Will Be Very Disappointed About That…”, which appeared on a flexi-disc that came with the Tottenham Hotspur football fanzine The Spur (Issue 24, Sept 1991).

 160.
There are still plenty more tunes we could post but wrapping this up now with a tune graciously supplied by Paul Vought. Thank you very much Paul, sorry it took so long.

 161.
The featured keeper is:

 162.
Shaka Hislop

 163.

164. Was spotted by a scout from Reading and signed as a professional for them. Played at Elm Park for three seasons. Was then signed for Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle and was in the side that finished 2nd twice in the Premier League. Went on to appear for West Ham then for Portsmouth (winning promotion to the Prem) before returning to West Ham and appearing in the 2006 FA Cup Final.

 165.

 166.

 167.
Shaka had an uncertain start with Reading (Which is where his “Shaky” nickname started ?) but established himself as a firm fan favourite. He won the Player Of The Year award twice and was instrumental in helping to get Reading from the third tier to the brink of the Premier League. His last game for them was the 1995 Division One Play Off Final against Bolton.

 168.
As previously mentioned I lived in Reading in the 1990’s and was a regular down Elm Park. I stood in the Tilehurst End and watched Shaka set up his fortress in front of that goal. What I didn’t know until Paul dropped us a line was that somebody had the knowhow and the cash to record and release this single:

 169.

 170.
As the <a href="http://www.45cat.com/record/elm001" target=_blank">45cat entry mentions it was a one-sided single on blue vinyl, featuring two mixes of the same song.

 200.

We’ve seen these last couple of seasons a few grand old football clubs sadly go to the wall. Nearly all of them due to some dodgy ownership. But the fans, those loyal supporters will never let them die. They will help to bring their club back to life in any way possible.

 201.
One of those fans using the resources available to them is the band <a href="https://glass-ankle.com/" target_"blank">Glass Ankle and what better way to raise awareness to the cause is to release a song.

 202.
Well in our opinion there isn’t. Moving on…

 203.
You remember Macclesfield… “Town ? Yeah, they’re League Two or National League or somewhere..”

 204.
An update in case you haven’t kept an eye on recent events: Sadly Macclesfield Town are nowhere. The club sadly went out of existence in October 2020. This wasn’t due to the pandemic or anything, it was because the club was badly run and had debts. The EFL docked points which left Macc Town bottom of League Two and then they were relegated to the National League. Eventually the HRMC were called in and a winding up order was issued. This is a very short and simplified summary of what happened, have a look at the Wikipedia entry for the whole complicated story.

 205.
The old Macclesfield Town that was officially ceased when they were suspended from the National League and their record expunged on 12th October 2020, the day after that the Official Receiver confirmed that the assets of Macclesfield Town had been sold to a local businessman, Robert Smethurst. He purchased all the assets and relaunched the club with the name of Macclesfield F.C. (which is what they were called when first formed in 1874) and they will and enter the North West Counties Football League for the 2021–22 campaign.

 206.
Even though the club is rescued and the future optimistic, they still need help. Macclesfield F.C is now owned and locally but they don’t have Dubai funds. The aforementioned Glass Ankle band have a tune coming out on 12th March (2021) and all money will be donated to Macclesfield FC and The Silkmen Supporters Trust to be used for the regeneration and rejuvenation of the club and its facilities.

 207.

 208.

 209.
The lead singer, Greg Jackson, along with his Dad were regulars at Moss Road. It was during this plight with Macclesfield Town last year when he first had the idea to record a song for a fundraiser.
210. Extract from their promo about the tune:

 211.

A song born out of a burning passion for a football club on the brink of extinction: I was in a state of despair as Macclesfield Town FC were wound up in the High Court with debts totalling more than £500,000, and subsequently expelled from their league. The writing was on the wall for the club that had been a constant in my life from a young age, having regularly attended matches with my dad and mates right up until lockdown hit. In the face of the devastation, I channelled my thoughts and feelings to create a song that communicated what The Silkmen meant to me. Both Danny and I, it has to be said, thought a song might perhaps help bring the fans together.

 212.
The song was called “Save Our Silkmen”, and a demo was released in October which was very well received by fellow fans struggling to process their beloved club’s demise.

 213.
Around three weeks later, local businessman, Rob Smethurst thankfully purchased the club, rebranding it as Macclesfield FC in the process. The club was saved!

 214.
Spurred on by the supporters’ response to the song, I decided to still go ahead and record a more polished version with tweaked lyrics to reflect the new sense of optimism. “Super Silkmen” is the result.

 215.
Enough with the guff. Listen to the song:

 246. Alternative title: Merseyside United, but these days sadly not. Years ago though it was a different story…

 247.
There are a some places that have areas where the residents are supporters of a certain team but in the city of Liverpool it is not the same. There are instances of families with one sibling following the blues and another, the reds. It is not uncommon to walk down a street and see one house with Liver Bird regalia and next door with The Toffees.

 248.
Liverpool and Everton fans co-exist together and it was a friendly rivalry. So much so that when the two teams met in 1984 for the Milk Cup Final (the sponsored-named League Cup), both sets of fans travelled down in coaches to Wembley together and even stood together to watch the game.
249. Granada TV even made a short documentary about it:

 250.

 251.
The match ended in a draw and nobody was really bothered about that. Out for a nice day down to that London. There was a replay at Maine Road in which Souness scored in the 21st minute and Liverpool took the cup home.

 252.
Two years later the two teams met again for the FA Cup Final and again it was the same. Friends, rivals, families again travelling together. This time the game was more contested with the final score 3-1 to the reds.

 253.
Granada TV were there again to record another mini-doc:

 254.

 255.
There was some music recorded and released for the 1986 final. The singer, Larry White, even set up a record label called Mersey Magic Music. The title of the label was also the song:

 265. The singer was a member of a band who performed regularly at The Cavern at around the same time as The Beatles. In later years he became a DJ on Radio Merseyside under the name Frankie Connor. The inspiration for the song came from his brother Freddie, who published a book with that title. It was a photographic journal of all the old crumbling Liverpool building which were being torn down at the time.
292.
For the FA Cup Final it was Merseyside united together. Brothers and sisters in arms remembering those relatives and friends who were not there for that day.

 293.
But it was still a football match and a cup to be won ! This time it was Match Of The Day reporting from back in Liverpool with some people who couldn’t get a ticket for the final:

 297.

 298.

Paul Kappa and Roger Jones along with the drummer in their band, Liam Rice survived the crush in Leppings Lane at Hillsborough, the Sheffield Wednesday football stadium disaster in an F.A. cup semi final between Liverpool F.C and Nottingham Forest F.C. on April 15th 1989. This song was not recorded until the Hillsborough Independant Panel published it’s findings in 2012. The song reflects the gloomy sense of injustice and muted outrage we felt at the Police cover up, sanctioned by the British establishment and voiced by certain sections of the press who gave voice to the lies that shaped ‘history’ and tainted the name of Liverpool as a city and as a football club.

 315.
As you can see on the record label the artist for this single was: _ _ _ _ ? Which led to lots of discussion on 45cat as to who it was who recorded these songs. (Click on that link if you want to see the answer). The more curious thing wasn’t that though. It was because of this previously mysterious Liverpool-based group and the sound of a band famous back then, that they tried to emulate. The band and that sound was:

 350.

A quick look as to why Queens Park Rangers are associated with that Pigbag tune before taking a dip into some 70's music...

 351. The post QPR’s Musical History first appeared on Football and Music.

 352.

The inspiration for a few of these posts sometimes come from an unexpected place. This one is no exception and started when our football and musical friend from 45football mentioned an article via his Twitter account. The article reports about a radio DJ who has collected nearly every record that has entered the official UK charts since 1952. As mentioned he has nearly every record but is missing three from his collection. One of those missing is what piqued our interest and led to what you are reading now.

 353.
That missing recording that got our attention is: The QPR Massive – Soopa Hoopz. It was released in 2004 and spent one week in the lower reaches of the top 75 before disappearing again. The reason for that interest is because the tune used in the single is a familiar one.

 354.
Here is that QPR Massive track, see if you recognise it:

 355.

 356. https://www.footballandmusic.co.uk/fitba/QPR%20Massive.mp3
 357. » QPR Massive – Soopa Hoopz

 358.

 359.
The borrowed song was first recorded by the band Pigbag and the tune is called Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag. It was released in 1981 but it took a couple of years before it hit the charts and since then hasn’t left our collective consciousnesses. The reason being that strong bassline and very memorable melody, something that could easily be adapted for anything.

 360.

 361.
But the question is though – How did this song get associated with QPR ?

 362.
It was the celebrity QPR fan My Brother Woody, previously featured here on F&M who pointed us to the answer to that. The tale is told on the Trust The Wizards website:

 363.

…I spoke to Pete Nuttall to find out how the playing of Pig Bag at Loftus Road came about. Pete is better known to Rs fans as the matchday DJ and announcer from 1997 – 2013.

 364.
…

 365.
Pete said: “I remember a chat with the then marketing manager, Mark Devlin, where we settled on Pigbag, and thought we’d try it at a game. We all agreed that if it didn’t work, if it got a negative reaction, or if a significant minority didn’t like it, we’d kill the idea stone dead.”

 366.
But, as Pete explains “It worked far better than we anticipated. It galvanised our celebration and Loftus Road was bouncing.”

 367.
…

 368.
As Pete Nuttall says: “I know many football fans rally against the idea of goal music, artificially pumping the atmosphere and drowning out the actual cheers and in general I agree. Your striker has just hit a 30-yeard pearler that has sent you up, why not soundtrack that epic moment with DJ Otzi? But at Loftus Road, Pigbag just works. It’s us.”

 369.
That question answered then, but in the course of this discussion we decided to look at the (unimaginatively titled) musical history of QPR. This is not going to be a full look at all the songs associated with the Loftus Road residents, just some highlights.

 370.
Beginning with…
371. ’67 Now this is possible the strangest of football singles because it was recorded and released after Queen Park Rangers had appeared in and won the League Cup. They were in the Third Division at the time – and they won that league before playing West Brom at the first time the competition was played at Wembley.

 372.
How did the match go and what was the score ? Have a listen to the singer – and the winger for the QPR who played in that game tell you:

 376.

 377.
The B side was given over to the supporters who sang/chanted about the team and “Rodney (Marsh), Rodney, Rodney, we want Rodney…” It is a very weird psychedelic freakout:

 380.

 381. ’72 Looking at the English football league history on Wikipedia and for the 1971-72 season there was nothing to sing about. The team didn’t do anything of note. The next one <a href=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972%E2%80%9373_in_English_football">72-73 QPR were in the 2nd division and did finish runners up and were promoted. Maybe that was the reason for the following tunes. Both tracks from the single are your standard 1970’s team singalong/brass accompaniment. Neither very inspiring.

 398. ’77 Again there’s no clear reason for the release. In the 1977-78 season they finished just one place and one point above relegation. A dive into Wikipedia has this:

 399.

”In 1976-77, QPR failed to recreate their fine form of the previous season in the league, but the cup competitions saw some success. The side reached the semi-finals of the League Cup but lost in a replay to Aston Villa and in their first entry into European football reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup losing to AEK Athens FC on penalties. In 1977 Sexton moved to Manchester United to be succeeded by Frank Sibley and Steve Burtenshaw and two years later QPR slipped into the Second Division.”

 438. For the very first time on the Football and Music website there is an actual proper podcast. This is a collaboration with our friends at Vincerà! The story of Italia ‘90 and features the gentlemen pictured above.

 439.
The name might not be familiar to you, but if it wasn’t for Mr David Bloomfield, the former Press Officer at the Football Association we wouldn’t have had New Order, Keith Allen or that magical John Barnes rap.

 440.
David, and there’s no exaggeration here, might have single-handedly saved the football and music genre and gave it some respectability. If it wasn’t for him we might’ve had Black Lace or James Corden release an England song. Well they did actually, but that’s beside the point…

 441.
I asked Mark from the @Vincera90 pod if he wanted to have a chat with David about that eureka moment with the England World Cup 1990 song, as well as obviously about Italia ’90 and his years at the F.A. »

 442.

 443.
Below is a transcript of the episode with the addition of music and video clips and links to other things mentioned by David in the interview. Click on the sections to read more.

 446.
Hello again Mark Godfrey here, your host of Vincerà! – the story of Italia ’90 podcast. After our final epic installment which concluded the series you probably didn’t expect to hear from us again. Well here we are, or a least here I am with the first of what may or not be occasional bonus follow-up episodes where we’ll expand further on Italia ’90 stories or look to tie up a few loose ends we didn’t get round to in the original series. This episode is actually the brainchild of Webbie – the chief of the brilliant Football and Music website who was a guest on Vincerà back in episode 9. Webbie kindly asked me if I’d like to chat with the man whose idea it was to marry England’s 1990 World Cup campaign with the music of one of the most respected indie bands of the era. The result of that lightning bolt of inspiration of course, was World In Motion.

 447.
MARK: On behalf of myself (Vincera90) and Webbie (Football and Music) I’d like to welcome David Bloomfield to the podcast. In case you weren’t already aware, David was the F.A’s press officer at the time of Italia ’90 and as well as having to deal with the demands of the bloodthirsty English media on the sometimes tetchy Bobby Robson and his players during the World Cup – he was also responsible for putting the wheels in motion on World In Motion: New Order’s iconic World Cup song. David. How are you ?

 448.
DAVID: Yeah very well thanks. And you ?

 449.
MARK: Not too bad under the testing circumstances we all find ourselves in… So David you’ve got a strong football background, your Dad was a former player with Arsenal and then went on to become the manager at Leyton Orient. Did this background influence you and sort of, push you on to becoming involved as the press officer at the F.A ?

 450.
DAVID: I suppose the short answer is yes… when I was born there’s a photograph of me I think at 2 years old – 2 days old in the London Evening Standard, I’m in the arms of my Mother and it said; ‘Arsenal’s inside forward has a son’ I mean hardly any reference to my Mother and that was on the back pages the sports pages of the Standard so I’ve been it’s a natural habitat for me from day 1.
451. I suppose I was a bit too young to see my Dad play, except for a bit later on in his career but I’d already played we always played football at school, we always talked about it. It was always the subject that we spoke about at home and it was my Dad’s job and it was just part and parcel of my brother’s life and mine. When my Dad got transferred in the latter part of his career he played for Plymouth, we would move down there and we’d all have new school’s, so moving from one school to another became a norm really.

 452.
MARK: Well your Dad was mentioned in a Fall song; ‘Enigrammatic Dream‘ – or at least it’s thought he was because there’s some possible confusion on the part of frontman Mark E. Smith.
453. The lyric we are referring to says that “Jimmy Bloomfield of Blackpool…” when your Father never played for them, but of course there was Jimmy Armfield who did famously play for Blackpool – who play at Bloomfield Road. So was that confusion ever cleared up ?
454.
455. DAVID: I think I cleared it up because there’s a few versions… Mark E. Smith, of course you won’t be able to ask him what actually was going on, but there is a version where he talks about the dead Jimmy Bloomfield as being revived to host this jousting encounter in Blackpool, now I looked up at the date of that live recording and my Dad died in ’83… at that time Jimmy Armfield was alive and kicking, so at that moment he must have known who he was referring to, but I think perhaps when it was written initially he might have got confused between Jimmy Bloomfield and Jimmy Armfield with Blackpool playing at Bloomfield Road, that’s perfectly possible. When Jimmy Armfield actually did die about a year ago I did get some text messages from people commiserating me on my loss of my Father. There’s always a little bit of confusion during their career with their names and they actually knew each other and played for England under-23’s together so anybody that has that confusion it’s quite normal. But I think that Mark eventually, at least in the latter, live version of that, does know what he’s talking about.

 456.
MARK: Who were the bands that you were listening to and went to watch in your youth ?

 457.
DAVID: The first gig I ever saw was David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust mode, not the famous gig when he retired that character but a few gigs beforehand so that certainly set a very high benchmark for what I was looking for. I think Bowie, Roxy (Music), Velvet Underground, The Doors, they were probably my influential bands really that I like and still listen to. Suede probably of the newer bands, although they’ve been around quite a while. They were a band I think were pretty good. Flaming Lips I like and they are turning out some good stuff I think.
458.

 462.
MARK: Were you at the Football Association when ‘All The Way‘ the Stock Aitken & Waterman produced song for England at the Euro ’88 competition was released ?
463.

 464. DAVID: I was at the F.A. I joined there in ’82 as an accounts clerk. I wouldn’t have had any influence over all of that kind of stuff and probably that was the lowest point in retrospect and when the World Cup 1990 came around there was a distinct lack of enthusiasm on behalf of everybody, I mean players and artists, nobody really wanted touch it. The song you were talking about I’ve already forgotten the name of it and you only mentioned it 10 seconds ago. The one I quite liked going back much much further would be 1970’s ‘Back Home’ I would be about 12 or 13 at the time. That was ok, I think they would be in the category, all of those would be in the category of novelty records.

 465.
MARK: Yeah you are right about it being totally forgettable so… Would it be fair to say that your own musical tastes and also the failure to gain any traction of that ‘All The Way’ record for Euro ’88 – Did that inform your consideration process for when the the topic of making a song for 1990 came up ?

 466.
DAVID: Well all those influences actually come together but the background to it was… I was much more interested in I suppose if you want to categorise it as left field music and anything that football teams had put out up until that point had been uniformly naff. You did have people in the music business that were interested in football, Rod Stewart had gone on about it quite alot and when my Dad was the manager of Leicester City there were bands such as Showaddywaddy were followers of the team and a bit more credibility – a group called Family were big Leicester City fans so there was a crossover into in terms of interest, but I don’t think there was much in terms of actual collaboration, they were two distinct areas of activity.

 467.
MARK: So what point was it that Tony Wilson and New Order entered the equation ? I have to assume you were a fan of New Order.

 468.
DAVID: Joy Division fan primarily and obviously that evolved into New Order. The background to this is that late at night down in London, about half past 12 at night there was a programme that I think was put out in the Manchester area on Granada TV called ‘Best and Marsh‘ and this was George Best and Rodney Marsh coming up with some film clips from great matches and their own personal anecdotes. This is a pretty good programme but it was on the graveyard shift down in London and I caught it one night and then right at the end when they were rolling up the credits, there was this quite nice bit of bouncy of music when the credits are rolling and it said “music by New Order” and that instant I knew that tomorrow I would phone up Tony Wilson and ask New Order if they wanted to do the World Cup record. There was no discussion by anybody that I was aware of that there could be or should be a World Cup record because following that Stock and Aitken thing it was really totally dried up, nobody was interested and that but when I saw this programme it was a eureka moment but I think its informed by all those bands and slight connection with football had the music business and my two loves really, football and music and in that one moment I was able to bring them all together.

 495.
MARK: Did you even think about approaching anybody else or was it always going to be New Order after you listened to them ?

 496.
DAVID: On that occasion it was a one-off. Perhaps, if Tony Wilson had said no this is a complete non starter I might have had to, might have had another think about it but until you mentioned it I never thought actually of anybody else who could have done it and Tony was enthusiastic from the very first so nobody else was really under consideration… I must say, now you mention it – in the build up to the World Cup, probably about a month or so after I’d spoke to Tony Wilson there was somebody from erm… there was that track ’19’ by Paul Hardcastle was out, I did have somebody from Paul Hardcastle’s office phone the F.A. there was a vague degree of interest from them which would have been an interesting to pursue in actual fact but we were somewhere down the road with New Order and that was the only other interest that I can recall from anybody. That was quite a tempting prospect how that would have worked out.

 497.
MARK: How things might have been very different had that, if you’d gone with Paul Hardcastle instead. How difficult was it to get the whole project off the ground and getting to convince New Order, the Football Association and course, the England players all to get onboard ?

 498.
DAVID: Just thinking about the idea that’s almost the easy bit really but if you don’t have the idea, you don’t have what comes next. When I got to work the next day at Lancaster Gate, the headquarters of the F.A. in those days, I phoned up the Granada TV and just asked if Tony Wilson was about and he was and got on the phone and I said; ‘It’s David Bloomfield from the F.A. Do you think New Order would be interested in doing the World Cup song for Italia ’90 ?’ And in an instant, to be fair to him, all credit to him he said yes, let’s do it and then he’s got the job of persuading people at his end and I’ve got the job of persuading people at my end but Tony and I, right from the beginning, we were going to do this and any obstacles that were in the way we were quite determined to knock them out of the way because he thought it was a good idea, I knew it was a good idea and I knew really that we should put it all together. Then… those days, 1990 I mean goodness it’s 30 years ago now, the F.A. was a lot less corporate than it is now so I didn’t really have to persuade anybody at the F.A. about this, there wasn’t a department for it, there wasn’t a committee for it – there was just an idea I had and I was allowed to run with it because nobody knew that this thing could possibly happen when as nowadays it’s a little bit more corporate. In those days the England team they had their own commercial interests completely separate from the F.A. so my job then was really to contact the agent of the players pool and try to convince him, he was on board for it right away, I think on the basis that there was nothing else really doing the rounds, nobody was falling over themselves to get involved with this project, then in turn the individual players had to be convinced of it’s merits. Now, New Order in those days, they would have been quite left field – people would have thought that maybe they were some sort of doom gloom goths or something like that if they had any perception of them at all. A load of footballers in those days, maybe Phil Collins might be more their territory. Luthor Vandross, something like that. There was a bit of reluctance to get involved in terms of ‘Who on earth are New Order?’ World Cup records had a particularly bad name at that time. I think also at the time Gary Lineker was trying to put together a record himself, I’ve never heard it but that sort of the public persuading Gary not to turn up and we only had, maybe, seven or eight actual squad players turn up for the recording session for the band, so it was a degree of enthusiasm but you know, nobody knew if anybody had known what was going to happen they would have been queueing up… We had more than a handful of players there so it had enough credibility I think.

 502.

 503.
MARK: So I think about the day of recording the song, we know that many of the players as you say, were less than enthusiastic. I can imagine dropping the likes of Paul Gascoigne into the recording studio environment and some of the others as well, I can sort of imagine the phrase ‘like herding cats’ might be appropriate on the day of recording.

 504.
DAVID: Collectively they don’t have a great deal of ability so they had to be steered in that regard but they don’t lack for enthusiasm. The funny thing about this when I read a lot of, when I’ve come across reports of the recording session it does sound like if it’s the Rolling Stones recording Exile On Main Street with the level of debauchery. I don’t really recall it like that at all. The fact of the matter was that we all met up relatively early, right about 10 o’clock, 11 o’clock one Sunday morning because that evening the England players were meeting up for an international match on the Tuesday or Wednesday of that week. There’s all reports about them being completely drunk and all this business, it was not the case, it was quite a sober affair because everybody the team, me included had to be meeting up at the England hotel that evening. It never really crossed my mind but I suppose I knew I couldn’t turn up with a load of drunken footballers at the England hotel because somehow some of the blame would have come my way. But it really didn’t happen like that it was a much more sober sensible affair, I mean Gazza is certainly excitable but there wasn’t any recklessness it wasn’t a festival of hedonism as sometime described.

 505.
MARK: How did you find working with New Order and Keith Allen ? Because the stories again, true or not, of difficult behaviour and of Allen’s, let’s call it, songwriting process are again, legendary but possibly greatly exaggerated.

 506.
DAVID: What you had really was some footballers there, obviously good footballers and you had a band who really knew what they were doing, so there was a degree of professionalism there underneath the surface so we had to work this out this was the only chance for the players to be in the studio with the band and I just… what surprised the first time I was in a recording studio, about the song, three or four minutes long it really is chopped up into so many different pieces almost like you know, a bricklayer building a wall, the musicians and the producers, they knew how to put this wall together and we just, we were like the bricks we were told where we were going to go… well not that I sang on it but the players were told which bit was theirs and how the whole thing comes to be constructed.

 507.
MARK: The early drafts of the song was to be called ‘E is for England’ I believe, contained lyrics which had pretty blatant drug references. First of all – How did you manage to put the kybosh on all of that and secondly – Do you know if there’s a hidden recording of this that nobody’s ever heard ?

 511.
DAVID: I remember when I spoke to Tony Wilson right at the very beginning, I mean certainly aborting to the ethos that the artist must have complete liberty to record and say whatever they want so I said to Tony, you can do what ever you like but I don’t want any reference to hooliganism. I mean that was the blight of the English game at the time and in some cases you had politicians arguing that England shouldn’t even take part in Italia ’90. And of course English clubs in those days weren’t committed, didn’t take part in European club competitions. So hooliganism was the subject that I didn’t want to the song to have anything to do with, but apart from that I didn’t issue any stipulations in anyway, shape or form. But I do remember seeing the front cover of the NME around that time, with a big suggestion that there was going to be E for England and I thought “hmm..that’s going to be a problem for me, how am I going to explain that…” But by the time we came to the er… I certainly didn’t put any block or veto on that, by the time we came to the studio these mythical lyrics, it just wasn’t referenced at all and I must admit I had a sigh of relief personally that wasn’t there because I knew that would be something down the line that I had to attempt to explain. So there is not a recording of that because it didn’t make it as far as the studio on the day.

 513.
MARK: Well the song the video, the iconic John Barnes rap. Once it was all in the can – Did you ever think that not only had an instant hit that would accompany the 1990 World Cup, when let’s not forget the England team were not really expected to do that well, that would also something that would remain a cultural landmark for decades to come ?

 514.
DAVID: I think my ambition from the very first was to turn out a decent song that can stand or fall on it’s own merits. If you link it with the football, fine, but it didn’t necessarily have to do that. There’s all the other examples that you have cited, if you didn’t listen to them in a football context it would be totally unbearable, its torture as it is but if you link them to football then maybe you can get through the three minutes of it. But with this one I wanted it to be able to stand alone and I think it does. I do remember at the end of the recording just as it was being wrapped up, when we were all in the studio Tony Wilson said to me ‘Ok David, your the guy who started this – What do you think?’ And I said I always knew it would be good. So right from the first knowing that the type of music that New Order put together, it couldn’t be anything other than good because certainly up until that I don’t think Joy Division and New Order had put a foot wrong. As to it being a cultural legacy you could see that pretty soon that during the tournament the sales of the record, even massive sales I believe in Germany. It started to have a life of it’s own and that was very pleasing. Nothing quite as pleasing to be honest as the moment the idea came into my head and I knew it was a good one that was quite a rush I have to admit.
541.
MARK: If we move on to Italia ’90 itself now. What was that experience like for you having to balance the demand for access to the squad as I mentioned at the start, of the infamous English press, both the sports guys and the muckraking tabloid rotters with the fragile egos of Bobby Robson and the players because we know that relations between the two sides were strained to say the least.

 542.
DAVID: I don’t think that Bobby Robson had a fragile ego, the amount of stick that came his way I think anybody would react on occasion through it. For me personally it was an absolutely brilliant summer because I was out there with the team right there from the beginning, I mean I’m a young guy I’m a good Sunday league footballer and I’m knocking about with world class players. I’m at the hotel I’m going to the training, sometimes taking part in the training if they want somebody else to be in the defensive wall on the end of the wall getting the ball blasted at me, but that’s just great isn’t it I mean, you are partaking in something…
543.
544. The media in those days you had terrific competition between the Sun and the Mirror in particular and I do remember one occasion I overheard two journalists talking and their instructions from their office was ok, you’re going to give Bobby Robson the benefit of the doubt and you are going to roast Bobby Robson so there was quite an aggressive atmosphere between the journalists more so perhaps the offices back in this country telling them directing them what kind of stories they should have. I mean it was my responsibility to structure a press conference each day and I thought to be fair to Bobby Robson he turned up and he would tend to take on all the questions, all the demands, all of the media from around the world, you know the players would have less time to be bothered to think about that and could go back to the hotel for a sleep that afternoon. It did reach some tetchy moments I suppose, there was one day when the players refused to talk to the press but that was in response to a story that had irritated them beyond belief that was totally untrue. What we really didn’t notice at the time was, there was a degree of support building for the team in terms of the performances and the results and the stories. Again it was 30 years ago it’s such a long time ago there isn’t any instant media, instant communication, we didn’t really know the groundswell of support that was building for the team and that’s best show in a way by when we came back to Luton Airport hundreds of thousands of people there. When we were in Italy, we couldn’t contemplate that degree of support for the team.

 545.
MARK: We all recognise the significance of the Premier League inception in 1992 but personally I believe football in England could be divided into pre and post Italia ’90 ages and you were right in the center of it all, so from your perspective inside the F.A. – Was the success and popularity of the 1990 World Cup and of course World In Motion – Was that ever properly capitalised on ?

 546.
DAVID: I think your division of before Italia ’90 and after is quite on the money there really, no pun intended. I think what Italia ’90 did and all World Cups do this, they introduce due to the coverage they introduce people that might be anti-football or neutral towards football and they show this sport to them at the sort of top end often people think yeah, hold on a minute there’s something going on here I quite like this. Other people still retain their empathy towards the sport but you will find a lot of people are introduced to the sport in a very positive way. You can see this with school kids, some kids are not interested in football, there’s a World Cup on…. see them five, six months later and they are playing football and really interested in the games. I do think World Cups do that and the World Cup record I suppose was an element in that in sort of taking football out of it’s immediate loyal supporter base and introducing it in other areas. I’ve seen that record used on lots of quite a few modelling assignments with people walking down the display area, the music’s going on in the background. So, in terms of the Premier League, you could get the feeling that there was something going on because the sort of director types that were with the England team were talking about it. I mean it’s much a bigger question if it’s good for the game or not, that’s a debit and credit analysis you’d have to make.

 547.
MARK: Is there anything that you would do differently in the context of either Italia ’90 or World In Motion ?

 548.
DAVID: I certainly think I would like Chris Waddle’s shot that hit the post, go in. I don’t know if you can remember there was an episode of a programme called Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) this detective programme, where one of the detectives was actually dead and as a ghost but he was able to… he wore a white suit he was able to influence events and there was one episode I think where he was sitting on a crossbar and he managed to deflect a shot that was going in… and to enable his team to win so something like that would have been nice to sort of knock his shot into the goal rather than to hit the post. What could have we done different ? Well certainly wouldn’t have done different with World In Motion, I think that’s stood the test of time. England’s performances, that’s sort of established itself in people’s minds. Particularly the West Germany game I mean that was just a fantastic game of football whether you are watching football for the first time or it’s your passion.

 549.
MARK: Yeah I don’t think I’ll ever watch a game as dramatic and as breathless as that one.

 550.
DAVID: The Cameroon game and the one against Belgium they were full of drama as well, but I think in the terms of the quality and the drama you literally had everything in that West Germany game.
579.
DAVID: By the time Euro ’96 came around there started to be a commercial department at the F.A. and a guy from that department, I remember him calling me up I’m in the press office and he says; ‘David. Can you show me the file on World In Motion ?’ And I said, well there isn’t one. It was a couple of phone calls and that was it. And he was completely bemused about this coming from a slightly different background. I can remember there was committees and all this kind of malarky… and these lyrics came in to Lancaster Gate and because I had a bit of experience about this the guy from the commercial department said ‘What do you think of these lyrics’ ? And certainly the opening remarks I think that were made by Alan Hansen, he’s ripping players to shreds and I said, I think this is a bit too negative and you can have a bit of fun, saying someone is useless or that sort of thing but this is… it was too nasty and I said why don’t you just put in there; ‘I know he can play’ because that’s quite a universal observation in football if somebody is any good you might say like with Gazza – ‘Oh he can play’ so that line right at the beginning I think voiced by Alan Hansen ‘I know he can play’ which is a much more positive observation than the ones that were originally written down, that did actually make it. The Lightning Seeds done it, it was somebody else’s baby within the F.A. and I think actually when you hear it at a football match, it actually does a job better at a ground than World In Motion. I think World In Motion sounds better on the radio but Three Lions is a fantastic song actually to be played at a ground and it was fantastic during Euro ’96 itself when that came on and the crowds voiced the words, it was great.

 580.
MARK: World In Motion is very much of its time, sort of the indie music, dance music to listen to in a club as you said on the radio. Whereas Three Lions is very much of its time, the whole lad culture, Britpop culture from the terrace and that kind of stuff, so yeah… Two records of very much of their time but they are never going to be topped I don’t think in the terms of England football songs or indeed any football songs I can imagine surpassing the success of those.

 581.
DAVID: It would have been interesting if we’d qualified for the 1994 World Cup because I did have an idea in my mind… and this is an exclusive – I was going to contact Aphex Twin because I thought that if we were going to do this again you had to go a little bit more left field and I think that would have been an interesting combination Aphex Twin might have done with it.
It sounded like a big wheezing football.”

 584.
MARK: Indeed. 585.
David: No no, I’d just about left then so I didn’t have any influence over that at all. Again I’m vaguely familiar with the song you are talking about but it not etched up here is it. It’s not quite the same.

 586.
MARK: No to be honest, me either.

 587.
DAVID: Actually there was Keith Allen and his ‘Vindaloo‘ that’s in the playoff zone I think that one, that’s quite interesting, Keith and his Vindaloo.

 588.
MARK: Well David it’s been fantastic to speak to you about World In Motion, Italia ’90 and your experiences at the F.A. I hope you’ve enjoyed reminiscing with us and taking this 30 year trip down memory lane. We really appreciate your time.

 589.
DAVID: It’s been great, it’s good to put some of the records straight because you do hear some weird and wonderful tales. Maybe they are better than the truth, but it’s been a chance to redress that I think, but thank you.

 590.
MARK: Fantastic. Thank you David.

 591.

 592.
INTERVIEW ENDS.

 635.

In addition to the previous entry looking for the oldest football songs - an album compilation with vintage football tunes just released.

 636. The post Pass, Shoot, Goal! first appeared on Football and Music.

 637.

638. Previously on Football and Music there was a query into what was the oldest football song. The answer was varied and one with multiple candidates who could claim that title.

 639.
As a postscript to that there’s this:

 640.

 641.
As you can see from the featured image and YouTube clip above, it does as it says on the tin – a compilation album of football records from the jazz age.

 642.
Nick, who curated this collection explains:

 643.

I’m a football-obsessed jazz musician and record collector based in London. To keep busy over the lockdown I’ve been working on a project to digitally restore and reissue some of my football-themed 78rpm records from the 1910s, 20s and 30s.

 644.
The album is available via Bandcamp and is a bargain at only a fiver. For that you get 17 vintage songs and a detailed illustrated booklet with the background to the artists and to football at the start of the 20th century.

 645.
Going to highlight a few of the tracks here, as well as some of the text from the accompanying booklet:

 646.
– The very first one from Sidney Kyte & His Piccadilly Hotel Dance Band, the music sounds very familiar. There are lyrics, a sample:
647.

Oh I do like to see a game of football,
648. When Saturday afternoon comes ’round,
649. Hip, Hooray! When they break away,
650. The cheers roll ’round the ground.
651. Oh I do do like to see a game of football…

 652. The tune also has some of those essential ingredients to a football song – some commentary of a match during the song, as well as a bonus of the chatter from a few of the fans watching.

 653.
Pass, Shoot, Goal! by Sidney Kyte & His Piccadilly Hotel Dance Band, with vocal chorus by The Three Ginx

 654.
Extract from the booklet:
655.

We open with the rousing ‘I Do Like To See A Game Of Football’ from 1932, performed by violinist Sidney Kyte and his Piccadilly Hotel dance band. In 1920s and 30s Britain 11-piece groups such as these – the forerunners of the ‘big bands’ of the 40s and 50s – were by far the most ubiquitous form of musical ensemble. Some of the most successful dance band leaders became household names and national icons, the pop stars of their day – although Sidney Kyte himself was not quite one of these. The rank-and-file musicians who staffed the bands (overwhelmingly, boisterous youngsters) were generally known to be football-mad, and as well as producing a small but significant canon of football-themed records over the years were also not above forming teams themselves and contesting inter-band matches, the results gleefully reported in the new music weeklies such as Melody Maker

 656.

 657.
This next track even older than the above celebrates going to the newly constructed Empire Stadium.

 658.
Pass, Shoot, Goal! by Jack Hylton & His Orchestra

 659.

‘Wembling At Wembley’ was recorded to celebrate and advertise the opening of the 1924 British Empire Exhibition, of which the vast Empire Stadium (later known as just Wembley Stadium) was only one element.

 660.
In 1924 the Lancastrian bandleader Jack Hylton was a rising force on the London scene, and kept in touch with his roots following the fortunes of his hometown side, Bolton Wanderers. Mere months before this record was cut, Wanderers had prevailed over East London’s West Ham United in the inaugural Wembley Cup Final, a landmark spectacle forever immortalised as the ‘White Horse’ Final. And here is Jack celebrating the scene of The Trotters’ greatest triumph on shellac: a coincidence surely, but a happy one worth noting.

 661.

 662.
A tune now with a celebration of Chelsea winning a cup:

 663.
Pass, Shoot, Goal! by Norman Long

 664.
But – as Nick writes…
665.

On the face of it, Norman Long’s 1934 song ‘On The Day When Chelsea Went And Won The Cup’ appears curious. Whilst one might sensibly assume it was recorded in the wake of a famous victory (or in heady anticipation of one that ultimately failed to materialise), at the date of recording Chelsea F.C. had in fact never won the F.A. Cup. However, in an early example of footballing ‘trolling’, this is in fact the whole point! Long (evidently not a fan) derives great comic result from comparing the likelihood of a Wembley triumph for the long-suffering Blues to an extended list of other ludicrously improbable occurrences such as doctors writing legible prescriptions, the sun shining in Manchester, and our own Jack Hylton conducting a chamber orchestra.

 666.

 667.
Three examples there then, with some interesting background about the artists and stories behind the songs. It is worth grabbing the full album which as mentioned comes with a 22 page illustrated, annotated pdf booklet. » Download/purchase here.

 688.

Was going to just write about a wonderful double single but decided to expand to the entire output of this one record label which was specifically set up just to release football songs…

 689.
The name of the label is the title of the post, an amalgamation of two football terms. It was an offshoot of Guided Missile records which as mentioned was set up just for these singles.

 690.
Between 1995 and 1998 this spin-off venture released a grand total of just four 7″ singles. They were:

 691.
FLICK 001

 692.
Donkey – AFC Donkey Salute The Magic Of AFC Ajax Amsterdam ‎
693.

Donkey existed between 1992 and 1997. In that time they released two albums and four 7 inch singles., and released tracks on various compilation albums. Formed by Ajay Saggar, the band were a favourite of John Peel who gave them a session in 1995.

 694.
In fact Guided Missile recording was started solely to release music by this artist and eventually the label became an established well known indie name. They released material from the band Bis amongst others.

 695.
You can buy this single (in praise of Ajax) via Bandcamp.

 698.
FLICK 002

 699.
Cha Cha 2000 ‎– Tired Legs At The End Of The Game / Trout – Green And White

 700.
This was the first double A side release by the Flighted Miskick label. Cha Cha 2000 were Mick Derrick and Pat Marsden from the band Prolapse / Trout were a band from Glasgow that existed between 1995-97. The single was a tribute to Celtic F.C.

 701.
John Peel as you know loved his football and music and gave an airing to all the label releases including the Cha Cha 2000 track on his show from 28th August 1997:

Terry Edwards, a noted musician who has played with many other artists as well as a few Peel Sessions, added his talents to the song. / From what I found via Discogs, the LFC303 track was by a Liverpool lad Andy Weir recording under the name Lava. Sadly I have to report that he passed away sometime in the 1990’s.

 713.
Featured here is the Terry Edwards contribution:

 723.
FLICK 004

 724.
Superlove – Cardiff City Football Club / Teen Anthems – Swansea City

 725.
The last release on the Flighted Miskick label is possibly the best one and like the above it was a double single. The Cardiff track is from a band using a pseudonym. Their real moniker is a familiar name if you know your Welsh bands: Helen Love. They were a favourite of John Peel’s and the band released a tribute song to him after he passed away. Their song to Cardiff FC is done in their usual bubblegum/punk/pop Joey Ramone style, with the added bonus of using the riff from the Banana Splits “Tra La La” theme tune.

 726.
The AA side with a tune about Swansea City is from “Teen Anthems” which the producer and arranger John William Davies is behind. His usual style is tongue-in-cheek with songs such as I Hate Oasis (And I Hate The Beatles) and: Paul Weller=Anti-Christ. You can read more about that output on the Babylon Wales blog.

 756.

Unless you follow Leyton Orient you might not be familiar with the subject of this post, so let me introduce you...

 757. The post Cooperman On The Orient first appeared on Football and Music.

 758.

This could be a candidate for the songs about obscure footballers because unless you follow the Orient you might not be familiar with the subject of this post.

 759.
Before we get to him a quick wander first…
760.
761. All of the following is from one source and as you will hear, “Funky” Lol Ross might be Leyton Orient‘s biggest supporter. So much so that he recorded and released songs about them, including one about a particularly successful season and about a striker involved in that season. Have you ever done that ?

 762.
There was a time when the Orient dropped down to the old 4th Division but he is the same as all of us, you follow your team through good times and bad.

 763.
Things were looking brighter for The O’s with the 1988-89 season. (Nicking this next bit from Wikipedia)
764. ‘Promotion had seemed out of the question for Leyton Orient, when they stood 15th in the league on 1 March 1989 with barely a quarter of the season left to play.’

 765.
But after that they went on a run and it was during this bit of form that Lol Ross recorded the following song on a 4 track and sent it to the Leyton Orientear, one of the country’s oldest fanzines. They then released it on flexidisc.

 766.

 767.
So what happened with the results and where did they end up then ? Haven’t you listened to the song yet ? It’s all explained in there.

 768.
If you are too lazy to listen or read I’ll put you out of your misery. They got into the playoff places and after a two-legged final against Wrexham they were promoted – with the help of their striker mentioned in the song, appearing in the animated gif above.

 769.
Not only just a mention, “Funky” Lol went to record a tribute to the now legendary (at their club anyway) player Mark Cooper. As he told me:
770.

<a href="https://www.45cat.com/record/nc230730uk" target=_"blank">The unlikely hero of the 88-89 promotion team was Mark Cooper, a lanky striker with long, curly hair who’d once been in Spurs reserves. Cooper turned up towards the end of the season. He split opinion among the fans, but scored the goal that clinched promotion. So I wrote and recorded a song about him, Cooperman (Sooper) Cooperman, just reflecting all that.

 771.
Here’s that goal:

 772.

 773.

 774.
And here is the song:

 775.

 776.
As you know John Peel loved his football and the music and there was no exception to this one. Played the track on his show 24th April 1990.

 778. » “Funky” Lol Ross – Cooperman (John Peel 24th April 1990)

 779.

 780.
This doesn’t end there though. Again I’ll let him explain:

 781.

Fast forward to 2006 and Orient got promoted from the 4th tier again! I used an old song written by my brother, changed the lyrics completely and the structure a bit and came up with ‘It’s Orient’s Time’. That’s very much both an optimistic and pessimistic song and it deliberately ends with a bit of a musical dissonance on the guitars to reflect that.

 782.

 783.

 784.
A postscript as to what “Funky” Lol Ross is doing now:

 785.

I still go to Orient and now play mandolin and guitar in a band called Steve White & The Protest Family (protestfamily.com). The original line-up got together over 10 years ago through a shared love of Orient. We don’t generally do football songs, but… we sometimes play a song Steve wrote about Sean Thornton, an incredibly talented ex-Premier League midfielder who wasted his career.

 786.

 787.

 788.
And finally:

 789.

More often, we play ‘Brisbane Road’, another song written by Steve. It’s great to play and goes down really well with most football fans – not just Orient fans.

 790.

 791.

 792.

 821.

Good question, good question. And indeed one that has a long and complicated answer. Join me as we go down this rabbit hole…

 822.
This Q was put to me (Webbie @FootieAndMusic) and I answered – off the top of my head – that it could be this by Albert Whelan, also by Gracie Fields, both released in 1931.

 823.

 833.
I also a gave side mention for this from The Band of the Arsenal Football Club released in 1934.
834. That’s right, they had their own brass band back in the day.

 841.

 842.
But – I was too quick with the reply to that question. It was Philippe Auclair (@PhilippeAuclair) the journalist and musician who has himself recorded some football songs, pointed out another tune. This suggestion reminded me that I had actually wrote about what is reported to be the oldest song: On The Ball, City associated with Norwich City:

 843.

“On The Ball, City” (sometimes abbreviated ‘OTBC’ in writing), the Norwich City F.C. song, is described as the world’s oldest football song still in use today; the song is in fact older than the club itself having probably been penned for Norwich Teachers or Caley’s FC in the 1890s, and used by clubs such as Swifians and Norwich CEYMS before being adopted by Norwich City.

 844. https://www.footballandmusic.co.uk/fandmxi/Norwich%20City%20-%20On%20The%20Ball%20City%201959%20version.mp3

 846.
As my fellow football and music aficionado Sid Lowe (@sidlowe) would say there’s a caveat to that though.
847. The tune wasn’t specifically done for Norwich City FC, just adopted by them. I know I’m splitting hairs there, either way as the wiki entry says it was first used by them in 1902.

 848.

 849.
» Next up is this mention from @Vincera90, an upcoming podcast series all about Italia ’90, with Mark Godfrey the curator and host of the series – On his previous gig at <a href="https://footballpink.net/" target=_"blank">The Football Pink he wrote about a football tune that his missus suddenly burst out singing. It is something her Grandmother used to know and learnt it from her.
850.
851. Around the end of the 1800’s/start of the next century there was a music hall artist named Harry Weldon, who was treading the same boards as one Charlie Chaplin around the same time. Weldon used to have this character called Stiffy, the Goalkeeper and during one of his skits sang about him.

 852.
There was a 78 RPM record released in 1914 but the tune was performed on stage years before that, could be early as 1900. So it might be the oldest popular football tune on record – unless you know better….
859.
» Slipping in a bit of classical now…. Jonathan Wilson (@jonawils) the oracle of everything football informed me about Sir Edward Elgar (composer of “Land Of Hope And Glory”) who it turns out was a big Wolverhampton Wanderers supporter. Apparently he used to cycle more that 40 miles from his home in Malvern, Worcestershire to watch them play. He was such a big fan of Billy Malpass that he even wrote a composition about the striker.

 860.
Extract from Before The ‘D’…Association Football around the world, 1863-1937:
861.

In February 1898 Wolves beat Stoke 4-2 in a Football League fixture. At Elgar’s request, Dora sent him a local press report of the match. The report, in covering a move involving Billy Malpass, used the phrase ‘he banged the leather for goal‘. Victorian writers frequently employed terms such as ‘the leather’ ‘the globe’ or ‘the sphere’ when writing about the ball. This phrase captured Elgar’s imagination, and he set it to music. The ‘score’ was included in a letter he sent to Dora in March 1898.

 862.
In 2010 a choir performed the piece to raise funds for a church but sadly there isn’t any video of audio of this concert. The only thing I found was this 6 second snippet:

 864.

 865.
We have our answer, sometime around 1898 then ? But wait – there’s more:

 866.
Pat Walsh (@pathfinderpat) let me know that around the same time as Elgar on his push bike going to the matches, in Scotland they were singing about the football, or fitba as it’s also known. The opening lines to this ballad might give you a hint of what became a famous song:

 867.

‘S’Noo ye a’ ken my big brither Jock, / His richt name is Johnny Shaw, / We’ll he’s lately jined a fitba’ club, / For he’s daft aboot fitba’.

 868.

 869.
A bit more from the Scots Language Centre about this tune before I reveal (unless you’ve already guessed)

 870.

…This is believed to be the earliest known song and prose of its kind about professional football in Scotland. It was printed between 1880 and 1900 and was written by James Currin. Currin was a native of Donegal, Ireland where the Scots language was (and still is) spoken. It was printed in Dundee but speaks about the game in Glasgow. The character says that his brother has joined a football club and makes fun of the state he gets himself into…

 871.
Have you guessed ? It is the ditty that eventually became the song Football Crazy.

 872.
The modern version of the tune was covered in 1953 by Patrick Galvin and Ewan MacColl (Kirsty’s Dad) but the most well known one from the folk duo of Robin Hall and Jimmie MacGregor, released in 1959:

 875.
– A quick side mention too for this other article on the Scots Language Centre site about football songs before 1860. None of them recorded on sheet music or anything like that, but we’ve got to include them if you really want to answer the question.

 876.

 877.
Wrapping things up with a few others which were flagged up:

 878.
» My football and music brother Pascal (@45footballCom) says that this is probably the oldest football song released on a record that actually calls individual players by their name, Willy Derby’s “We gaan naar Rome” for the World Cup in Italy:
880.
He also tells me that FC Zurich who had their own choir:

 881.
