href="https://www.ibm.com/marketplace/tribeca/?lnk=ushpv18l1&lnk2=learn">IBM Lounge at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City last week which provided an excellent opportunity for attendees to connect with IBM subject matter experts to learn how technology can be applied to storytelling. The exhibits included:

T Brand Studio Augmented Reality app for iOS and Android. The feature film, “Hidden Figures,” inspired this Augmented Reality app and brings to life virtual statues of the film’s compelling characters - Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan. In the 1950s, these incredible women helped NASA launch the U.S. into space with their calculations. Use this Augmented Reality app to discover the remarkable contributions made by these women and others. Grab your phone and explore your city with Augmented Reality to uncover these influential stories! Supported cities include Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington D.C. Users not located in these cities can learn more about these inspiring women directly on the app

TJ Bot is a open source robot for makers, creators and thinkers to explore Artificial Reality with Watson

Musician with Watson allows you to pick a mood, pick a genre and make your own music on the keyboard or drum kit. Automatic has two newer models, the Lite and the Pro, that are significantly more expensive and have features I don't need (Pro: cellular connectivity, Lite: missing features). I'm very happy with my Automatic V2 and recommend it.

Included in the box is the Automatic connected car adaptor that plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash of most cars. Once installed, the adaptor pairs with an app on your iOS or Android smartphone via Bluetooth. Time, distance, fuel economy information and more are automatically sent to the smartphone app. Crash detection automatically generates a call from Automatic asking if everyone is alright and if emergency services should be contacted. An app gallery, IFTTT integration and Alexa allows extensibility.

Likes

Easy to install and pair with the mobile (iOS or Android) via Bluetooth

Automatic gathers data even if you don't have your smartphone with you - data is transmitted to your phone the next time you use it

Integration with Alexa and IFTTT - "Alexa, ask Automatic where my car is"

Records miles per gallon for each trip as well as date, time and a map

Active feedback on my driving style (heady acceleration, braking) via audible "beeps" from the adaptor

Notification of check engine light codes and the ability to reset them. Previous solutions we tried (OurPact, taking devices away, scolding, etc.) had mixed success. My kids would play on their mobile devices and game consoles all day long if I let them.

My need was for an automated solution with the following requirements:

1. The ability to set time usage limits for each child and their associated devices (e.g. 2 hours per day), bedtime "Internet off", content and app filters.

2. Easy for BOTH me and my wife to use, support for multiple devices (iOS, Android, Mac, PC, Xbox, Playstation, etc) with no requirement to install software on each device.

3. Finally, I preferred "one time purchases" rather an a monthly subscription fee. I'm cheap and prefer to keep costs low.

I looked at a variety of hardware and software solutions, including purchasing a new wi-fi router (e.g. Synology RT2600ac) but ultimately I decided on Circle with Disney for $99 on Amazon ($90.37 after $8.63 off sale).

Circle with Disney is a small white box that connects to your home network via wi-fi or Ethernet cable and installed and managed via a free iPhone or Android app. Installation and configuration was fast and easy. I created a profile for each child and then associated their devices. This was a bit tricky because it wasn't always easy to tell which device was which. A few tips:

For iOS devices, open Settings > General > Wi-Fi Address (MAC address) which is also displayed in Circle

I have two wireless networks, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. While Circle can manage both, when Circle is first configured it must use the 2.4Ghz network. Devices on the 5Ghz network didn't show up. Moving the device to the 2.4Ghz network temporarily allowed me to see the device and associate it with a child. Once configured, the device could connect to either network

Out of the box, Circle manages Internet access via wi-fi and not cellular. However, for an addition $9.99 monthly subscription (in-app purchase), you can manage cellular access as well. Thankfully, cellular access in our neighborhood is poor and discourages the kids from using it. Circle also won't limit access to downloaded content. For example, if my kids downloaded a video or music, Circle wouldn't limit usage.

While Circle isn't perfect, it has helped me gain control over my kids Internet usage and I recommend it.

Likes

Inexpensive ($99) and no subscription fee for wi-fi and wired Ethernet device management

Easy to use. I set bedtime for my kids (weekday and weekend schedule) and time limit for each child for the day

"Insights" provides details on how much Internet time each child has used and time spent in each app

Everything is controlled from a mobile app that is used by the parents

Nothing to install on devices

The ability to give "rewards" for more Internet time or a later bedtime for each child

The ability to associate devices with children. All other devices can be unmanaged and have unlimited access

Content and app filtering

The ability to manage all devices including smartphones, tablets, PC's Xbox and Playstation.

Dislikes

It was hard to identify some devices and not all devices immediately displayed in Circle. Switching my devices to the 2.4Ghz wi-fit network did the trick. I sometimes needed to resort to looking at MAC address. However, this is a one-time process for each device.

Some devices like an Xbox are used by multiple people and can't be shared

$9.99 a month subscription to manage cellular usage (wi-fi management is free). AT&T charges the same $9.99 monthly fee for 10 devices.

No warnings when the kids are running low on Internet time - disconnect is immediate. Kids can check their quota at http://mycircle.meetcircle.com

How it works
Circle poses as the gateway using a technique called “ARP spoofing” or “ARP poisoning" which allows Circle to monitor all traffic on the home network automatically and without special configuration. Learn more

More videos available on YouTube

iHealth digital wi-fi scale review - thumbs up!

My employer, IBM, provided me a free iHealth Vista HS5 digital scale as part of my company-sponsored health insurance plan. In 2016, IBM provided a free Apple Watch as part of the Apple Watch for Corporate Wellness Program. I'm thrilled with IBM's efforts to promote healthier, happier employees through the use of technology. I had the choice of selecting the iHealth digital scale, a glucose monitor and blood pressure cuff among other options. I selected the scale.

The iHealth Vista digital scale setup was very easy. Insert the batteries, install the iHealth mobile app on my iPhone, connect the scale to my home wi-fi network, authorize the Apple Health app and that was it. Stepping on the scale displayed my weight and body fat using four metal sensors. This information and the other measurements below were immediately sent to my iPhone.

Weight

Body fat

Lean body mass

Muscle mass

Bone mass

Body water

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Visceral fat

Previously, I had been measuring my weight regularly on a top-rated Taylor bathroom scale and writing down the results in my journal. The wi-fi scale simplifies this process and also captures additional data. I've found that weighing myself regularly helps me to manage my weight and track progress.

Pros

Easy, fast setup and easy to use

Sends data to Apple Health app as well as the iHealth app

The price was right - FREE. Fully funded by my IBM health insurance plan.

Cons

Apple Heath app is only available for iPhone (no iPad, Mac)

Only the iHealth app (not Apple Health) shows historical data and trends over time

Apple AirPods wireless headphones - thumbs up!

I've been using the new Apple AirPods headphones for a week now and I'm a fan. I ordered the Apple AirPods online on December 13, the first day of preorders. The delivery date was January 12 but the AirPods arrived at my home early on January 4.

The AirPods fit my ears perfectly like the similar wired Apple EarPods. I've used the AirPods at the gym and in my home office on conference calls and find them comfortable to wear. Sound and microphone quality is a step above the stock Apple EarPods and is very good.

Pairing with all my Apple devices - iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch was a simple one step process - open the AirPods case and tap on my iPhone screen. However, I ran into problems when trying to connect to different Apple devices, particularly my Apple Watch. After a few days, most of the problems went away except for connecting to the Apple Watch which has been consistently problematic for me on multiple watches (Series 0, Series 2) and multiple headphones (AirPods and Beats Wireless Studio).

I really like the charging/carrying case to keep the AirPods together and charged. I wish, however, that the case wasn't rounded at the bottom so it could stand up on my desk. I'm considering purchasing the new Spigen AirPod charging stand when it is released next month.

Pros

Easy, fast setup for all Apple devices sharing the same iCloud id

Innovative charging and storage case

Very good sound quality

Pairs with non Apple devices via Bluetooth

Cons

A double tap to mute feature would be useful for conference calls. The issues I experienced during the first week switching devices have disappeared. While there have been some minor firmware updates, there have been no new features or capabilities. I'm hopeful that a double tap to mute feature is added in the future to make it easier to use AirPods on conference calls.

2016 Technology Year in Review

In no particular order, the following are my top technology hits and misses for 2016.

Mobile was hot in 2016 led by the exploding Samsung Note 7. The iPhone 7 offered incremental improvements and Google double-downed on smartphones with their new premium Pixel smartphones. My most used apps include Messages, Snapchat, Pokemon Go, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Super Mario Run, YouTube, Netflix and Waze. From a business perspective, my favorite apps of 2016 included IBM Connections, Box, Microsoft Office 365, Trello, WebEx and Jabber.

Tablet sales continue to decline and I was disappointed by the iPad Pro as it has too many compromises. While the new Apple MacBook introduced incremental improvements, Windows laptops and tablets continue to drive innovation.

Smart assistants made headlines in 2016 with the introduction of the Amazon Echo and Google Home. The Amazon Echo gets my award for the best gadget of 2016. It's a no brainer at $49.95 ($39.95 on sale) if you're an Amazon Prime customer.

Wearables from Garmin, Fitbit, Microsoft and Apple continued to improve in 2016. I upgraded to the new Series 2 Apple Watch as part of Apple Watch corporate wellness program offered through my employer, IBM since it encourages fitness and I'm rewarded with gift cards based on the number of steps.

The new Apple product that most impressed me the most in 2016 was the AirPod wireless headphones. Pairing bluetooth headphones is much more complicated than it needs to be, battery life is poor and dropouts are annoying. Apple has addressed all three of these problems. I hope Apple licenses the W1 chip technology to other manufacturers and we see dozens of new devices in 2017.

Both Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) gained interest in 2016 but products remain niche and expensive, 2017 is poised to be a breakout year as the technology goes mainstream,

Security breaches continued to grow in 2016. While getting hacked is inevitable, the most important thing is how companies respond to hacks in terms of speed, communication and remediation. I continue to be a big fan of password wallets and a long time user of Dashlane which makes it easy to create and manage complex passwords - reducing risk. Competitor LastPass made headlines for adding cloud syncing to its free service.

Operating systems including macOS Sierra, Windows 10, iOS 10 and Android N delivered modest, incremental improvements. My favorite new feature was the macOS/iOS 10 Universal Clipboard which allows copy and paste across devices.

TV made gains in 2016 with more affordable OLED screens, High Dynamic Range (HDR) more 4K content and more "cut the cable cord" streaming options. My purchase of a flat LG OLED TV was my favorite technology purchase of 2016.

The Consumer Electronics Show kicks off on Thursday January 5 in Las Vegas and is sure to include lots of new technology.

Star Wars Rogue 1, Super Mario Run, Man in the High Castle season 2 and Apple AirPods

This was a big week with four major milestones of interest to me:

Super Mario Run app for iPhone and iPad was released

The premier of Star Wars Rogue One

Season 2 of The Man in the High Castle was released on Amazon Prime

Apple AirPods wireless headphones were released

Super Mario Run is now available for free for iPhone and iPad. The game includes 3 free levels and all the additional levels can be unlocked with a $9.99 in app purchase. I'm not very good at it, but it's a fun game the can be played with just one hand. Unfortunately, Internet connectivity is required so I won't be playing on the plane.

Star Wars Rogue One premiered on Thursday at 7pm and I was fortunate to see it with my son and his friend from school - both big Star War fans. I liked it better than last year's the "Force Awakens" and it's my favorite Star Wars film since the "Empire Strikes Back."

The Man in the High Castle premiered last year on Amazon Prime and I was a big fan of the series. I was thrilled see that it was renewed for a second season. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I plan to over the holidays.

Apple AirPods were released. Unfortunately, I didn't place my order quick enough to arrive before Christmas. The estimated delivery date is January 12. AirPods go on sale in Apple Stores next week and I plan to check availability in the event I can pick up a pair faster.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; While it took almost 2 months for my iPhone 7 Plus to arrive, it was worth the wait. I like the size, form factor, performance (3GB RAM), battery life, screen, haptic TouchID sensor, water resistance, dual camera and new portrait mode with iOS 10.1. I'm not missing the headphone jack.

I splurged for the Apple iPhone 7 Plus black silicone case ($39) and I'm really glad I did. It looks, fits and feels amazing.

I keep my iPhone 7 Plus charged and ready on my nightstand using the iPhone Lightning dock which also allows me to use standard headphones while charging.

I also signed up for the Barclaycard Visa with Apple rewards to earn 3x points for purchases at Apple as well as special financing. I already earned my first $25 iTunes gift card. Even the employee at the Apple store was impressed when I cashed out via ApplePay on my Apple Watch with the Apple credit card.

Apple Watch Series 2 (42mm with Silver Aluminum Case with Pearl Woven Nylon)
I had been using the original Apple Watch since it was first released last year and liked it. Earlier this year, IBM began offering a free Series 1 38mm Apple Watch to all US employees with a high deductible/HSA insurance plan to encourage fitness. The "Vitality Today" app even tracks your steps which you can redeem for prizes (e.g. iTunes gift cards). The only charge to IBMers is a $80 tax withholding. I decided to take advantage of the offer and upgrade to the Series 2 42mm for $135 additional. A little more than a month later, the watch arrived. More details on the Apple Watch at Work program is available on Apple.com

The Series 2 watch is slightly thicker than the original but offers much faster performance, a brighter screen and is water resistant. Thankfully, the bands are interchangeable with the original. My favorite band remains the Penom Milenese Loop - a steal at only $10.99 on Amazon with free Prime shipping.

I continue to be a fan of the Spigen S330 Apple Watch stand which keeps my Apple Watch charged and accessible on my night stand.

Amazon Echo Dot (second generation)
Another Amazon purchase and a steal at $49.99 with free Prime shipping. The Echo has found a home in my kitchen and is perfect when I'm cooking and have my hands full. The voice recognition is amazing.

Redesigned Apple MacBook Pro
Apple released new, thinner, more powerful Apple MacBook Pro laptops with a new Touch Bar at an event last week. My current MacBook Pro, purchased last year, works just fine and I don't plan to upgrade at this time. My all time favorite laptop, a 5 year old MacBook Air 11.6 inch remains my trusty backup.

New TV app for Apple TV
At the same Apple MacBook Pro event last week, Apple announced a December software upgrade for the Apple TV which includes a new TV app. The new app provides a portal through which you can browse movies and TV shows across content providers. Apple didn't specify which providers would be included but Netflix announced that they would opt out of the new TV app. Perhaps Netflix doesn't want to share their usage data with Apple. The standalone Netflix app will still be available. I always carry an AppleTV in my work backpack as it remains the best device to view Apple content or deliver a client presentation wirelessly.

Google Pixel
I'm a big fan of my Nexus 5X but I was a bit disappointed with the price of the new Pixel smartphones. While the Pixel is clearly a big step up from the Nexus, they lack key features like waterproofing and a removable SD card. I was also bummed that Nexus users won't be getting the new Pixel launcher and Google Assistant with Android 7.1. I wish Google had continued to make a lower cost Nexus/Pixel phone. I'm in no rush to upgrade the Nexus 5X I purchased earlier this year. Key announcements included:

iOS 10 includes a redesigned lock screen, Siri SDK, a new an improved Messages app with a new app store, HomeKit app, improved Apple Music and Maps app, the ability to delete several iOS installed apps, Cisco VoIP integration (Enterprise)

watchOS 3 includes improved app performance (faster app launches), a new app launcher, activity sharing, new Breathe app and new watch faces (e.g. Minnie Mouse), scribble feature feature to reply to text messages

macOS Sierra, the new name for OS/X, includes Siri integration, auto unlock with Apple Watch, deeper iCloud integration, Universal Clipboard with iOS (Continuity), deeper iCloud integration

tvOS 10 includes improved search, expanded Siri capabilities, single sign-on authentication, and new Apple TV Remote app for iOS

As expected, there was no mention of new hardware (e.g. (new Macs, new Apple Watch, new iPhone) as the event is focused on software. New hardware announcements are coming.

Overall, it was a solid but not knock-your-socks off event. As is typical, Apple didn't show all the new features. The developer betas have even more than what Apple was able to show on stage and even more features are expected when the new operating systems ship this fall. Public betas are scheduled for next month.

I liked that Apple acknowledged improvements are needed (e.g. Apple Music) and the focus on integration with other Apple devices (e.g. Continuity) which is a key strength and advantage over Android.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; to upgrade with one tap. I've been impressed with how stable the beta is and the number of new features including improved notifications and split screen multitasking. I'm looking forward to trying the new instant apps that launch immediately without downloading. A good list of the new Android N features can be found on Android Central.

Apple's annual developer conference, WWDC, kicks off on June 13 in San Francisco. I'm looking forward to Apple's announcements.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; After using the Nexus 5X for over a month, I'm a fan.

The new Imprint fingerprint reader is easier to setup and quicker to use than Apple TouchID. Initially, I didn't like the placement of the fingerprint reader but I quickly got used to it. Using Imprint to unlock the Nexus 5X is much easier than entering a passcode. However, there are relatively few apps that support Imprint for app authentication at this time.

Pros:

Low cost

Just the right size - not too big and not to small; can be used with one hand

Very nice LCD screen and build quality

Nice camera

Native Android 6.0 Marshmallow experience

Android Imprint fingerprint reader

Native Android experience

Lots of security updates from Google that are installed automatically

USB C connector

Cons:

Buttons for power and volume are awful - way too small

Dual speakers look great but sound awful

Security updates take a long time (20 minutes+) and have to process each app installed on the phone - the more apps the longer the updates take

No integrated visual voicemail

Specs:

5.2 inches

1920x1080 LCD at 423 ppi

Corning Gorilla Glass 3

Fingerprint- and smudge-resistant oleophobic coating

Rear Camera 12.3MP, 4K (30fps) video capture

Front Camera 5MP

Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 Processor, 1.8GHz hexa-core 64-bit

Memory & Storage RAM: 2GB LPDDR3

Internal storage: 16GB or 32GB. No external storage options

Apple iPad Pro review - Thumbs down!

I've been testing the Apple iPad Pro 12.9 inch for the past several weeks and while I appreciate the incremental improvements, it's not worthy of a separate "Pro" model and the extra cost. The iPad Pro 9.7 brings even more enhancements but is still just an incremental upgrade to the iPad Air 2.

Hits:

Larger 12.9 inch screen. While not for everyone, it's great to have choice - small (7.9 inch), medium (11.7 inch) and large (12.9 inch). While most apps aren't optimized for the large 12.9 inch screen, they are coming. Slide Over and Split View, introduced in iOS 9 provides multitasking capabilities and work great on the large 12.9 inch screen.

Apple finally eliminated the base model with 16GB of limited storage and replaced it with 32GB. I hope Apple follows suit with the new iPhone and also increases the paltry 5GB of free iCloud storage.

Smart Connector. While I'm not a fan of the Apple Smart Keyboard (there are much better and less expensive third party keyboards with backlighting and support for multiple screen positions), I am a fan of the new Smart Connector as it eliminates the need to charge a Bluetooth keyboard and it delivers "instant on" capabilities.

Faster A9X processor, 4GB RAM (12.9 inch) and improved front and back cameras (9.7 inch).

Improved four-speaker design sounds great.

Improved cameras. The iPad Pro 9.7 inch now has support for 4K video and an improved FaceTime camera

Misses:

Additional cost. Apple hasn't delivered enough enhancements to warrant the extra cost or the "Pro" moniker

Too many models. Apple makes the iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 4 and iPad Mini 2. Apple needs to consolidate and simplify the product line. Why not just call it the iPad and make it available in three sizes?

Apple Pencil. There are plenty of excellent third-party styli and the Apple Pencil seems like an afterthought. There is no eraser, no way to turn off the Apple Pencil to conserve battery life, no magnet to attach the Apple Pencil to the iPad for travel/storage and charging using the Lightning port is awkward. However, it's unforgivable to ship the Apple Pencil without handwriting recognition in iOS. The Apple Newton had this feature in 1993.

Smart Keyboard. Only one position and the keyboard isn't backlit

Apple marketing. Apple touts the iPad Pro as a Windows laptop replacement. Why isn't the iPad Pro also positioned as a Mac replacement? The iPad Pro isn't a replacement for a Windows or Mac PC for most users.

Software. iOS hasn't been optimized for the larger 12.9 inch screen. Finally, Apple's focus on new hardware is overshadowing software and quality has suffered as Walt Mossberg and others have noted.

What tech accessories do I use for work?

In my previous posts, I shared the smartphones, tablets and PCs I use for work as well as how I have my Apple iDevices configured. In this post, I share my favorite tech accessories:

High Sierra Business Elite backpack is my everyday gear bag for all my electronic devices. When I work out of my home office, I connect my MacBook Pro to a 24" external monitor and an external Apple keyboard. I have other Macs (MacBook, MacBook Air) that I use for testing as well as several Windows laptops and tablets that I use for testing

Apple iPhone 6 (64GB) is my primary work smartphone. I have several other smartphones that I use for testing.

Apple iPad Air 2 (64GB) is my primary work tablet. I have several other tablets (Nexus 7, HP Stream) that I use for testing.

Apple Watch is my primary smartwatch and I use it to read alerts, flip Microsoft Powerpoint slides and more.

Apple TV (Gen 3) is my primary streaming device since I use Apple products. I always keep an Apple TV in my work backpack to deliver wireless presentations to colleagues and clients. At home, I use an Apple TV Gen 4

Ambient Weather Station WS-1400-IP - thumbs up!

A year ago I purchased the Ambient Weather WS-1400-IP OBSERVER Solar Powered Wireless Internet Remote Monitoring Weather Station for my home and I couldn't be happier. For $150, it's extremely easy to setup and use, full-featured, wireless, solar-powered and allows me to share my data via Weather Underground free of charge.

My home weather station is a perfect example of the Internet of Things (IOT), cloud, big data and analytics in action and I used it as a teaching tool for my kids. I'm happy to report that the SteelSeries Nimbus wireless gaming controller solve this issue. Sold at Apple stores and online, the Nimbus can be used with iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac and easily connects via Bluetooth. The controller includes a built-in rechargeable battery and is easily recharged via an Apple Lightning cable. The controller is well-made, comfortable, responsive and comparable to other game controllers like XBox and PS4. At $49.95, the Nimbus $10 less than those controllers.

A brief demo of using the controller with an iPad to play Pinball Arcade:

Happy gaming!

How I have my Apple iDevices configured

A colleague recently asked me how I have my Apple iPhone, iPad, Mac, AppleTV and Apple Watch configured. While everyone will have their personal preferences, here are mine:

iTunes - I use a single iTunes ID for all my Apple devices as well as my family. This allows all my iTunes (music, videos, book) and App Store (apps) purchases to be available on all devices. While I was initially excited with the prospect of the new iOS 8 Family Sharing feature, I was disappointed to learn that it doesn't support iTunes Match (see below) so I'm unable to use it. I use the same iTunes id for work and personal, for iCloud and iMessage. However, my wife and kids each have a unique Apple ID that they use for iCloud and iMessage (see below).

Apple Music - Update 26 March I purchased a family subscription for my wife and three kids and we love Apple Music. I have a large MP3 music collection in my iTunes library. I also subscribe to Sirius/XM satellite radio in my two cars and use the mobile app extensively to listen to music both at home when connected to wi-fi as well as when traveling and using cellular with unlimited data from AT&T (DirecTV 2016 promotion)

iTunes Match - I'm a huge fan and for $24.99 a year, it's a bargain. Our family has a large number of playlists which are available on all our devices. Unfortunately, iTunes Match doesn't support Family Sharing isn't supported so each of our devices (maximum of 10) needs to log into the same iTunes account. I hope Apple addresses this limitation.

iCloud - Each of the members in our family has their own iCloud account in their own name. It's easy and free to create a new id on Apple.com. Some members of my family makes due with the free 5GB account but others, including myself, pay $1 a month for the 50GB. I hope Apple increases the 5GB free storage.

iMessage and FaceTime - Each of the members in our family uses the same iCloud id for their iMessage and FaceTime ids on all their iOS devices. If you use the same id for each family member, everyone will get each other's messages I've configured my iOS devices so if I get a message on one device, I get the message on them on all. My kids have disabled this feature. I've also configured all my iOS devices to ring when I get a phonemail or text message. As an AT&T customer, I've also enabled NumberSync so I can receive phone calls on my iPad even when I don't have my iPhone with me.

Find my iPhone/iPad - enabled on all my devices and I use it at least a couple times a month to find one of my kids lost devices.

Find My Friends app - installed on all our iPhone and iPad. We've invited each other to share our locations. We also have "Notify Me" alerts set (e.g. when the kids arrive home, at school etc.). It's an incredibly useful app.

That summarizes my recommendations and preferences. What are yours?

Riega Apple Watch replacement band - thumbs up!

I own a space grey 42mm Apple Watch Sport with the black plastic sport band. It's a great watch but I've been wanting to purchase a replacement band for a dressier look. The bands that Apple sells are very nice but also expensive. I was looking for something more affordable (e.g. aftermarket bands)

My first attempt was the $40 Happy Cell blue leather loop which I purchased online from Amazon. The band's biggest problem was that the magnet wasn't strong enough and didn't hold the watch on my wrist. The second problem was that the leather wasn't durable and after one day of use, it started to show signs of wear. I promptly returned the band to Amazon for a refund.

My second attempt was the $30 Riega black stainless steel Milanese loop. The band looks great, is comfortable, matches my "space grey" Apple Watch perfectly and the super-strong magnet keeps the watch securely on my wrist. I've also noticed that unlike the stock plastic band which can sometimes get sweaty, my new stainless steel band is "ventilated" and doesn't get sweaty like the stock band. In addition, the magnet closure on the new band is infinitely adjustable, unlike the stock band which has a fixed number of settings, which allows me to get a perfect fit.

Apple did a great job designing how the bands attach to the watch simply and easily without tools so its easy to swap out bands.

I remain a fan of the Apple Watch - particularly now that Apple has released WatchOS 2.0.1 which re-enables the ability to view my work calendar.

I've decided to pass on the new Apple magnetic charging dock for $79. I'll stick with my $15 Spigen stand which has served me well for the past several months.

A few of my favorite Apple Watch apps/features:

Apple Pay. However, I wish more retailers accepted it

Microsoft Powerpoint. For advancing slides from the Powerpoint app on my iPhone

Delta Airlines boarding pass

Fitness tracking

Calendar

Text notifications and responses using Siri and default messages

Navigation. Apple Maps running on my iPhone will give gentle taps on my watch when it's time to make a turn

Apple TV generation 4 - thumbs down!

I preordered the new Apple TV generation 4 ($149, 32GB model) and it arrived as scheduled at my home on Friday via UPS on Friday. The new Apple TV is also available for purchase in Apple retail stores. I'm a longtime Apple TV user (and fan) and I've purchased each new Apple TV the day it was released. I had high hopes for the redesigned Apple TV with the new app store, Siri support, touch remote and more but ultimately I was disappointed. The new Apple TV is still very much a "hobby."

First impressions
The first Apple TV I received had a defective remote control and I returned it to my local Apple store for a replacement. I wasn't off to the best start but this can happen with any product.

Automated setup didn't work for me - it stopped midway through the setup on two different Apple TV's and I had resort to manual setup after rebooting. While not a big deal (manual setup isn't difficult) it should have worked out of the box. I finally gave up and setup the Apple TV manually which resulted in more onscreen typing as well as having to enter my Apple ID and password twice - once for iTunes and once for iCloud. Apple should have provided the option to use the same id for both.

Up and running
Finally, I was up and running. The new AppleTV runs a new tvOS based on iOS and includes a new users interface which is well done. The same familiar apps for watching TV and video are available (Hulu, Netflix, CBS, ABC, Crackle, etc) as well as new games. Like previous versions of Apple TV, it's a pain to register for each app individually, open a browser on my Mac or mobile device and activate the app. Apple has to do a better job of improving the user experience.

Games look fantastic on the Apple TV but unfortunately, the new touchpad remote isn't great for most games since its not precise enough. One game, Asphalt 8, allowed the remote to be rotated like a steering wheel. Only one Apple TV remote can be paired and the remotes are $79 each. Third party game controllers should offer better game control and multiplayer action. I'm interested in the Nimbus SteelSeries. The new remote is rechargeable via an included Lightning cable but there isn't a corresponding USB port on the back of the AppleTV. I needed to use a spare power adapter.

The new Apple TV lacks an digital audio output like it's predecessors which means I needed to connect to my receiver via HDMI and power up my receiver. With the digital audio out, I liked the flexibility of listening through my TV speakers and only powering up my receiver when I wanted to in order to use my subwoofer and surround sound speakers.

A nice new feature is the ability to Siri to search for TV shows or movies in addition to "what's the stock market doing today?" However, I was disappointed that I had to hold down the button on the remote to use Siri and I couldn't use Siri to search for apps. Siri couldn't search for music. I'd also like to see the App Store organized better to make it easier to find apps.

Conclusion
Ultimately, the new Apple TV disappoints but if Apple make content deals and improves the user experience it could ultimately be a winner. I still like the previous generation Apple TV and always keep one in my bag for delivering wireless client presentations and demos. A key advantage of the previous "Rev A" model is the ability to stream content wireless without connecting the Apple TV to a wifi network as shown in my YoutTube video.

Update 21 Nov: I purchased a SteelSeries Nimbus game controller at my local Apple store and it's a must have for game play. Well made and includes a built-in rechargeable battery that charges via an Apple Lightning cable - same as the out of the box controller from Apple.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The event can be watched live, online at Apple's website or on Apple TV. While we don't know exactly what will be announced, the following are the most popular rumors and my take:

iOS 9 and Apple Watch 2.0. I've been using the iOS 9 beta on my iPad and I love the new and improved multitasking feature which allows two apps to run side by side and even watch a video in a third window. As an Apple Watch user, I'm looking forward to the new native apps capabilities that should make apps more responsive. I'm also looking forward to more watch faces. Read my review of the Apple Watch

New iPhone 6S with a faster processor, ForceTouch screen (like the Apple Watch), improved camera. Since I bought an iPhone 6 last year, I'll probably skip the 6S and upgrade to the 7 instead.

iPad Pro. Lots of rumors and it appears likely that they will continue without an announcement from Apple

New AppleTV with Siri integration and a new remote control and app store. I'm a huge fan of the AppleTV and I've owned every model since its release. I will definitely be upgrading.

Apple HomeKit. Available since last year, partners have been slow to embrace the platform. I'm eager to start adopting the technology in my home. My thoughts in an earlier blog post.

My visit to the US Open Tennis 2015

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8guA6CYg5bo/VecJFnHUOZI/AAAAAAACFMs/3zw63K8NToM/s1600/us%2Bopen%2Blogo.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; There are lots of water fountains around the grounds to fill up your water bottles.

Make a dinner reservation at Aces or Champions. Doing so allows you to enter the grounds early - 5PM entry for a 7PM match. While the food is pricey, it isn't much more expensive than the food village and you're guaranteed an air-conditioned seat

Before going to the restaurant, get your free photo taken at the Mercedes booth with the US Open trophy

You should have just enough time after dinner to attend the American Express Fan Experience. Show your Amex card for free admittance to the members hospitality tent. Have your Amex card swiped to save $10 after $150 in purchases. Visit the Amex radio booth, show your Amex card and get a free headset radio to listen to the live play-by-play.

Head back to Arthur Ashe for the 7PM match. The match typically doesn't get started much before 7:30pm so no need to rush.

Take a break from the match and wander the grounds. Be sure to check out some of the smaller courts where you'll get a fantastic view of the match. There won't be any big-name players but you'll get up close and personal. Check out the sponsor booths for free giveaways.

Looking for a souvenir? Save your money and buy one at home. The $45 big tennis balls can be found online for half price. Similarly, you can buy US Open tee shirts online for half price after the open finals. I am a fan, however, of the US Open souvenir soda cup and Honey Deuce souvenir glasses. I have a collection that goes back a decade.

SlamTracker provides detailed match statistics
