42.
Brian came to live at the National Home in 1996 when he was just 10 years old, along with his mother and siblings. It was the first time he had experienced stability and was finally given a chance to have a real childhood.

43.
44.
45.
46.
His exposure to veterans planted a seed in his heart during his three years living at the Home that served as the catalyst when the 9/11 tragedy struck.

47.
48.
49.
50.
Brian knew he wanted to fight for his country, so he immediately enlisted in the Army and was sent to Iraq. Toward the end of his tour, a Humvee he was riding in on combat patrol struck an IED, killing his four comrades immediately and severing Brian’s foot. While doctors were able to reattach it, Brian has spent years in rehabilitation and now possesses a Purple Heart.

69.
“I am excited to be part of something that actually changes the lives of veterans so we can make the world a better place,” said Brian.

96.
97.
“The weight of all he has seen and done, of the pain he has borne and the trials he has overcome bear down on his broad shoulders. The soldiers personal war is over. He is Heading Home,” said the late Kincaid, often called the painter of light, in an explanation of this work.

98.
99.
100.
101.
“I did not choose to show the warrior’s face in my painting of the homecoming veteran. The hero of Heading Home is not an individual at all; he is the essence of the American soldier. We cannot tell whether he returns from Normandy, from Saigon, from Beirut. In a sense, he has spilled his blood on all those fields of honor,” Kincaid added.

113.
114.
115.
116.
“I became aware of the “Heading Home” painting over ten years ago, and when I thought about what I wanted to give, I knew it was this painting,” explained Hora.

122.
123.
124.
“I hope this painting encourages the veterans and their families to understand that we want to help them get to their own homes, and we are providing them a place to recover from whatever challenges they are facing,” said Hora.

125.
126.
127.
128.
“Dwight has been a dedicated ally to the VFW National Home and speaks highly of our program wherever he goes. I have grown a sincere admiration and respect for Dwight as he is always searching for ways to assist and better his fellow veterans. From the day we met in December of 2021 to today, he has been approachable and focused on solutions, traits that make him respected by many. I am thankful for his thoughtful gift,” said Executive Director Mike Wilson.

155.
156.
The year 1930 marked the first year of the Buddy Poppy Child when a youngster who lived at the VFW National Home was selected to represent the Home at the national level on behalf of not only the Home but the VFW.

165.
166.
167.
168.
In 94 years, the program has actually changed very little. Each year a child is selected among the children living at the National Home to serve as the Buddy Poppy Child for one year. That commitment involves attending the VFW National Convention and giving a speech to all those in attendance, as well as representing the Home on other special events. In recent years, the Buddy Poppy Child has pinned a buddy poppy on Michigan’s governor.

169.
170.
171.
172.
“It is a huge honor for the child. This is a chance for them to talk about their parent or the veteran in their family who qualified them to live at the home to show what it means that they served our country. They show that they are proud of their parent and proud to be a military kid,” said program director Angie Harkins.

173.
174.
175.
176.
Harkins explains that the Buddy Poppy Child serves as a face of the VFW National Home representing all the other children who live there.

181.
182.
183.
184.
The application process for the Buddy Poppy Child begins in March. Applicants are required to prepare a speech highlighting their veteran parent or relative who made them eligible to live at the home, as well as why they like living on campus. Applicants then read their speech in front of a group of staff assembled for that purpose. Factors considered are presentation, school attendance and grades, and availability.

189.
190.
191.
192.
As the VFW National Home approaches its 100th-anniversary in 2025, this year’s Buddy Poppy Child will be especially busy. Previously, the newly chosen Buddy Poppy Child begins their tenure at the National Convention in July, but this year the Buddy Poppy Child-elect will shadow the current child, Layla, from April until July.

193.
194.
195.
196.
Historically, a new child is selected each year, but in cases where there is not a suitable applicant a Buddy Poppy Child may be asked to serve an additional year.

241.
The new district boundaries below will take effect immediately. We understand that this may impact some of our volunteers and supporters, but we are committed to ensuring a smooth and seamless process. We believe that the realignment will ultimately benefit our charity’s mission and help us to better serve our constituents across the country. 269.
“Many families couldn’t participate in trainings and events held on campus because they didn’t have childcare on evenings and weekends,” explained EEC Supervisor Ivy Bush.

270.
271.
272.
273.
The EEC provides care from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to children from infants to five years old. New extended weekend and evening hours will now be offered when there is a special training event or campus activity that parents would like to attend. The special hours will extend until 9 p.m. in the case of a scheduled training or event any day of the week.

280.
“Giving them the sense of security that their children are being cared for, enables the parents to attend trainings and work on their goals, and that’s what we are here for to support these families as much as we can,” said Bush.

281.
282.
283.
284.
Currently, ten families utilize the EEC with a total of 13 children currently enrolled in the program, but that number fluctuates a great deal, and is dependent on the needs of our families.

294.
295.
296.
“The EEC is a benefit for our families with younger children to be able to take the financial burden of child care off of them so they can focus on their goals. It only made sense to extend our hours to be able to accommodate our families that work. The staff at the EEC are incredible at what they do, and our families know that their children are in the best hands,” said Angie Harkins, Program Director.

337.
Any veteran who has tried to apply for benefits has felt the frustration.

338.
339.
340.
341.
“When they need help, they call somebody and then get referred to someone else at a different number and then from there keep getting sent to someone else before maybe eventually finding the right person to help them,” explained VFW National Home Program Director Angela Harkins.

342.
343.
344.
345.
When Executive Director Mike Wilson began his tenure at the Home two years ago, he knew this needed to be remedied. As a veteran himself, he understood the stress created when it’s difficult to access services.

346.
347.
348.
349.
“Resources are difficult to find and acquire, much less having to drive 25 to 50 miles to acquire them. Many of these resources will come to us if we make room for them and share their needs with them. Veterans shouldn’t need to take a day off to get to them,” said Wilson.

350.
351.
352.
353.
Now, almost a year and a half later, the Veteran Family Resource Center is in full swing on campus and serves as a one-stop shop for veterans to come and work out any issues they are having with their military careers or benefits.

364.
Located in the lower level of the Health and Education Building, the VFW Auxiliary provided the funds to remodel the much-needed nerve center and community gathering place that would serve veterans all in one location.

365.
366.

468.
Despite Sherman’s longevity, Luisa and her family were beginning to be continually disappointed by their trusted friend.

469.
470.
471.
472.
“It came to the point that we would cross our fingers and pray that it would take us where we needed to go,” explained Luisa of her Dodge Durango affectionately named Sherman. “It had been through it all with us and was our first family vehicle.”

473.
474.
475.
476.
The car needed a new engine, but Luisa, a resident of the VFW National Home with her four children, didn’t have the funds for the repair.

477.
478.
479.
480.
It was overwhelming for the Navy veteran who served for nine years and was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

481.
482.
483.
484.
“I had enough on my shoulders trying to make a better life for my kids. Eventually, the car just quit altogether,” she said.

488.
Unexpected Phone Call Brings Help

489.
490.
491.
492.
Luisa’s misfortune coincided with an unlikely phone call to State Adjutant/Quartermaster VFW Department of Michigan, Barry Walter.

493.
494.
495.
496.
“I received a call from the wife of a former client whose son worked for Progressive Insurance’s Annual Car Giveaway Program. They were seeking veteran applicants in Michigan,” explained Walter.

497.
498.
499.
500.
Walter, a former service officer, contacted several veteran navigators around the state about the program and decided to see if the VFW National Home had anyone that they thought would be a good candidate to apply.

501.
502.
503.
504.
VFW National Home Program Director, Angela Harkins, knew just the person.

505.
506.
507.
508.
“Luisa is a stellar resident at the VFW National Home and has worked hard to be able to provide for her kids and make a better life for them all. She is working on her bachelor’s degree and is a paraprofessional for the local school system,” said Harkins.

517.
518.
519.
Progressive Insurance’s Keys to Progress has been giving cars away to deserving veterans since 2013. This year’s 2023 event marked the 1000th vehicle giveaway, and Luisa served as the lucky recipient of a 2021 Nissan Rogue.

520.
521.
522.
523.
“I am still in shock! I don’t think I’ve fully processed it yet. I literally have a NEW CAR, which was given to us for FREE!” Luisa exclaimed in an email.

524.
525.
526.
527.
“By providing transportation support, our hope is to offer a little relief and improve the lives of those in the military facing tough circumstances who have given so much for their country,” explained Claims Process Manager Michael DiPiazza of Progressive.

528.
529.
530.
531.
“It’s just wonderful that corporations like Progressive are thinking about how to help veterans. They have the ability to help, and they take action to do it,” added Walter.

532.
533.
534.
535.
Luisa expressed relief that the fear of being stranded is now gone, and she can safely drive her children to school, for appointments, and anywhere else they need to go.

536.
537.
538.
539.
Adding, “This is the best gift I could have ever received. Truly, we thank you very much, Progressive, for changing our lives!”

540.
541.
542.
543.
And the name of the new ride?

544.
545.
546.
547.
“Sheryl” will be the new wheels for this hard-working mom and her gang.

561.
562.
563.
“Overwhelming,” said Leslie Peters, great nephew of Corey Spencer, on visiting the beautiful VFW National Home with his family in the crisp of autumn for the first time in his life.

564.
565.
566.
567.
Up until a few months ago, Leslie was unaware that his great uncle, cattleman, and VFW member, Corey Spencer, donated a farm on 472 acres of beautiful rolling land alongside the Grand River outside of Eaton Rapids back in 1923 for the purpose of creating a national home to take care of the wives and children of veterans who were killed or disabled.

568.
569.
570.
571.
At the same time, Leslie’s father, Don, who was Corey Spencer’s nephew, knew about the home but had never seen it.

572.
573.
574.
575.
“When I first looked at it, I thought, ‘My God, look at what my Uncle Corey has done!’” said Don, 93, who came all the way from Florida to see the place for the very first time that his mother had only spoken of a few times.

576.
577.
578.
579.
“We were very impressed and astonished about how big it was, and so neat and clean and everyone so helpful,” he added.

580.
581.
582.
583.
Don’s mother, who was Corey Spencer’s sister, moved away from their hometown of Jackson, Michigan, and married and raised her family in Illinois. Although she visited Jackson when her children were young, Don remembered that his Uncle Corey was never there when they came. Therefore, Don never met the man who helped make the VFW National Home a reality.

584.
585.
586.
587.
Almost a century later, the VFW National Home, with its 42 single-family homes and expansive supports has been in continuous operation offering a safe haven to veterans near and far who have suffered the ravages of war or been in crisis after their service.

588.
589.
590.
591.
“My eyes welled up just seeing the home. I felt such pride,” expressed Leslie, whose brother is also Corey Spencer, named after their great uncle.

592.
593.
594.
595.
“It’s unreal what’s been done for veterans and their families,” added Don, a veteran himself and member of the VFW.

596.
597.
598.
599.
Coincidence Leads Family Back to Their Legacy

600.
601.
602.
603.
The discovery of their connection to the Home came through an unexpected coincidence. Leslie and his wife recently moved from Illinois to the Lansing area to be near their son and his family. After the move, Don mentioned something about a place where his uncle had donated land. Leslie then told his son about it and discovered that it sounded a whole lot like a place where his son’s friend worked.

604.
605.
606.
607.
As it turned out, the friend was National Home Facilities Director Rick Stiver.

608.
609.
610.
611.
From there, they put the pieces together and eagerly gathered the family for a visit to see their ancestor’s generous donation.

612.
613.
614.

618.
Relatives From Near and Far

619.
620.
621.
622.
While Spencer had no children of his own, a crew of his great nieces and great nephews, as well as Don and his wife Peggy, came from as far as Florida and California to lay eyes on the family legacy in mid-October.

623.
624.
625.
626.
“I am so very proud to be a part of a bloodline of a man who has left such a mark in touching so many lives for so many years,” said Heidi Shonka, a great-niece from Port Huron.

627.
628.
629.
630.
Executive Director Mike Wilson and staff welcomed the family for a two-day visit that included meeting the staff, a tour, and learning about the history of the Home.

631.
632.
633.
634.
“It’s a new beginning for our family. We’ve been reconnected, and we’ll be back,” said Leslie.

635.
636.
637.
638.
“It’s very comforting to know the home is in good hands with Mike Wilson and his staff, who are doing a good job of helping veterans and their families,” he added. “I just want to tell everyone about the VFW National Home,” expressed Heidi.
