19.
Matt Tellem, whose Nets tenure goes back to the Rod Thorn era, is leaving Brooklyn for the Phoenix Suns.

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reports Friday that Matt Tellem, the Brooklyn Nets long time capologist, is near signing with the Phoenix Suns…

 22.
The Phoenix Suns are closing in on hiring Brooklyn Nets executive Matt Tellem in franchise’s front office, sources tell ESPN.
— Tim MacMahon (@espn_macmahon) May 17, 2024

 25.
 26.

 27.
Tellem was elevated to Vice-President for Strategy six months ago. Bobby Marks who as a Nets assistant GM hired Tellem in the team’s New Jersey days described him as “One of the top salary cap/strategy executives in the NBA.”

 28.
Tellem, whose father is Arn Tellem, Vice chair of the Detroit Pistons, began as a basketball information coordinator for the Nets and rose through the ranks under Thorn, Billy King and Sean Marks. He was Long Island Nets GM in 2019 then promoted to capologist. Tellem was instrumental in the cap manipulations that permitted Brooklyn to sign Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, DeAndre Jordan and Nic Claxton. In the post-Big Three era, he’s helped engineer trades that generated tens of millions of dollars in trade exceptions.

 29.
His departure is the third major one since the end of the regular season following those of assistant GM Jeff Peterson and basketball operations director Ryan Gisriel, both of whom joined the Charlotte Hornets.

 30.
In that same period, the Nets have added Jordi Fernandez as head coach, as well as Steve Hetzel and Juwan Howard as assistant coaches and Justin Howard as Gisriel’s replacement.

 42.
Vorkunov: Brooklyn Nets name four-sport development exec as basketball operations director

 47.

 48.
 49.
Justin Bokmeyer, who has development experience in three sports is the new director of basketball operations.

The Athletic reports that Justin Bokmeyer, who’s worked in development programs for the NBA and MLS as well as in collegiate lacrosse and softball, is the Brooklyn Nets new director of basketball operations. He replaces Ryan Gisriel who was officially named vice president of basketball operations by the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday.

 50.
Per Mike Vorkunov:

 51.

The Brooklyn Nets have added Justin Bokmeyer to their front office as their new director of basketball operations, according to league sources. Bokmeyer had been the general manager of the MLS NEXT, the league’s development program, and worked in international basketball ops for the NBA.

 52.
Between 2018 and 2022, Bokmeyer helped “guide the considerable growth and success of the NBA Academy program,” and Basketball Africa, the MLS reported when he was named the first GM of MLS NEXT in August 2022.

 53.
Indeed, Bokmeyer was instrumental in the creation and launch of the Basketball Africa League, the NBA’s African development league and the first North American-based sports league on the African continent. Bokmeyer’s responsibilities included oversight of basketball operations for the BAL and coordination of teams across 12 African countries.

 54.
Prior to that, the California native spent two years as the director of lacrosse operations and one year as director of softball operations at West Point, his alma mater. Bokmeyer also played professional lacrosse for the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse. (Joe Tsai of course is a leading advocate of professional lacrosse.)

 55.
Bokmeyer is a former military officer who served in Iraq. His bio notes the West Point grad spent 11 years on active duty in the U.S. Army. During that time, he served as a Platoon Leader and Executive Officer at Fort Carson, Colo. and in Nasiriyah, Iraq. He has an MBA from the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University.

 56.
The Nets still have to fill the assistant GM position vacated by Jeff Peterson who was hired as the Hornets GM. B.J. Johnson who’s run the Nets draft the last three years as director of player evaluation, is seen as the leading candidate for that job.

 76.

 77.
 78.
The Liberty found their second gear in Indy, and turned Caitlin Clark’s home debut into a somber affair for the home team

Thursday night’s contest between the New York Liberty and Indiana Fever — the first of a home-and-home series — was not the Caitlin Clark Show.

 79.
Perhaps much of Indiana’s sell-out crowd expected it to be, and perhaps some of the media did too. The first five questions asked to Liberty Head Coach Sandy Brondello in her pregame presser were about Clark, only a couple of them about the X’s and O’s challenges the rookie star would present.

 80.
And Clark is a star, to be sure, but Brondello soon had to make it clear that Clark “is a great young talent, but I think you have to realize the other players, the great players we have around. It’s unfair for Caitlin, for it to be just about her. It’s really unfair, it’s not right. She’s young, she’s gonna have highs and lows. Let’s celebrate all the great players in our league, not just one player.”

 81.
Brondello’s case unfolded before our eyes over the next two hours, in a game dominated by some truly great players. Fortunately for the sea foam, most of them were on New York’s side.

 82.
It started with Breanna Stewart, who exceeded her nine-point performance from the season-opener in the first quarter of Thursday’s action. The first play New York ran was to get Stewart to her spot, and she cashed a signature pull-up jumper. It was on from there...

 83.

 84.

 85.
Stew York City gettin' the party started in Indy @breannastewart pic.twitter.com/tmLF330yjr
— New York Liberty (@nyliberty) May 16, 2024

 87.
 88.
 89.

 90.
An 11-point first quarter became a 20-point first half, which turned into 31 on 12-of-21 shooting for Stewie. One of the league’s great players played great, shaking off any rust and memories of her subpar 2023 post-season.

 91.
“It’s Breanna Stewart,” said Brondello. “We ran some plays for her early. The first play, it was good for her just to see the ball go through the hole.”

 92.
And as the Liberty kept a steady, single-digit lead, two other stars were busy battling it out. A Caitlin Clark-Sabrina Ionescu duel didn’t quite pan out — the two didn’t even guard each other — but the Jonquel Jones-Aliyah Boston battle sure did.

 93.
From the get-go, it was the physical battle you’d expect between an MVP center and a potential successor, and it took all of six minutes for tensions to boil over. Skilled lip-readers will confirm Jones wasn’t repeating words of encouragement to her fellow Caribbean big...

 94.

 97.

 98.
 99.
 100.

 101.
Jones didn’t replicate the monster scoring performance she had in the opener, but was a force down low nonetheless, recording a double-double with 12-and-10, with two blocks. After the first quarter quarrel, which somehow didn’t result in any technical fouls, neither big got into too many extracurriculars, though both scored minor victories.

 102.
Jones blocked Boston on a couple post-ups, Boston later returned the favor, and the fans who paid the price of admission to see the other stars got their money’s worth.

 103.
Maybe less so if they were rooting for the home team. The Liberty blew the game open going into halftime, with Brondello returning to her starting five early in the second quarter after various bench units couldn’t get it going. The decision didn’t mesh with Brondello’s stated desire in the preseason “not to kill” the starters too early with big minutes, but hey, it won New York the game.

 104.
Over about a dozen minutes of game-time, New York’s starters stretched their lead from 32-27 to 67-44. Defensively, Betnijah Laney-Hamilton hounded Clark as soon as they crossed half-court, with help from the Libs’ dominant front-court, which could trap Clark’s ball-screens and still blow shot-attempts up on the back-line...

 105.

 106.

 107.
Easy decision to show two to Caitlin Clark when you have Stewie doing THIS on the back-line: pic.twitter.com/3cS95oxzLE
— Lucas Kaplan (@LucasKaplan_) May 16, 2024
 108.

 109.
 110.
 111.

 112.
Clark missed a couple open shots, but really, her lack of statistical production was about the Liberty’s front-court, which limited her to just 9/7/6 with three turnovers on 2-of-8 shooting.

 113.
“I thought we executed our scout really well,” said Brondello. “I mean, Caitlin demands so much respect out there and attention and that’s what we did and we have Betnijah Laney. I mean, what more could you ask?”

 114.
Offensively, New York’s size showed up as well, with bigs burying switches under the basket for layups and offensive boards, allowing New York to cross the century-mark despite shooting just 8-of-27 from deep.

 115.
So no, Sabrina Ionescu didn’t go crazy, but she played a pristine game, posting 14/7/3/1/1 on 6-of-14 shooting, including another floater showcase that had her probing the lane as she did at Washington to open the season.

 116.
“I thought it was great,” said Brondello. “We’ve spoken about it: To be great, you have to not just settle for the three ... I think anytime we can two feet into the paint, we’ve got really aggressive guards, and most players that can get in there, they’re high percentage shots.”

 117.
Better yet, New York dominated so thoroughly in the middle periods that the starters earned themselves some rest in the final frame: No Lib reached 30 minutes on Thursday.

 118.
The team’s biggest runs, though, always coincided with Laney-Hamilton’s minutes; she did the dirty work of chasing Clark through every screen, and was rewarded with a plus-minus of +43, a Liberty single-game franchise record.

 119.
The bench had another fine, if unspectacular night. No one unit really impressed, and while Kayla Thornton and Kennedy Burke hit shots and made some nice defensive plays in garbage time, respectively, the standout reserve was Nyara Sabally.

 120.
After playing many of her minutes on Tuesday next to Jonquel Jones, she backed Jones up on Thursday, playing the center position next to Stewie. And once again, she made athletic plays that raised the eyebrows of her coach, whether it was sprinting the floor for a layup or switching on to Kelsey Mitchell and stonewalling the shifty guard...

 121.

 122.

 123.
Nyara Sabally locks down Kelsey Mitchell on the switch. Really impressive: pic.twitter.com/YOtOUB3POZ
— Lucas Kaplan (@LucasKaplan_) May 16, 2024
 124.

 125.
 126.
 127.

 128.
“I mean, last year she was coming back from having a year out with surgery, and it takes time to get your body back where you want to be,” explained Brondello. “She’s playing with a lot more confidence ... it’s exciting. You know, we talk about our bench, and I thought we had some good pockets from a few of them, but Nyara, we can continue to build on that. But yes, she does look quicker, which is nice to see.”

 129.
As the Liberty look for some reliable units to build their bench around, Sabally emerging as a viable backup-big option would be huge, and her play on Thursday night was the cherry on top of a dominant performance from a team who showed Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever:

 130.
There’s levels to this.

 131.
Final Score: New York Liberty 102, Indiana Fever 66

 132.
Next Up

 157.
The Liberty get a first hand look at the Caitlin Clark experience tonight in Indianapolis.

That was a workout. The New York Liberty hit the road to begin the 2024 season, and the Washington Mystics gave them everything they could handle. Ultimately, the Liberty’s depth and perseverance won out as they held on for an 85-80 Opening Night victory.

 158.
If you thought all eyes were on the Liberty, then WHOA BUDDY! The sports world has descended on to the Indiana Fever and everyone’s watching their every move. They opened the season with a tough matchup against the perpetually excellent Connecticut Sun, and CT took care of business with a 92-71 victory. Caitlin Clark had 20 points but 10 turnovers. More on her next game down below.

 164.
The game

 165.
If Sandy Brondello says it once, she’ll say it a million times. Turnovers, turnovers, TURNOVERS! The Liberty coughed it up 18 times, but fortunately for them, only five after halftime. You can’t afford to give the ball away, and with a team that has the firepower on offense that Indiana has, you’re tempting fate if you play sloppy basketball. When the Liberty take great care of the ball, they can make life hell on the Fever as they did last year

 168.
Preview for the Indiana Fever vs New York Liberty

The Liberty went 4-0 in this matchup last season

I can’t wait for these 2 games pic.twitter.com/ukSgNdcot2
— Taka Kauri (@takamaikauri) May 16, 2024

 171.
 172.

 173.
I feel like by the end of the weekend, the state of Indiana will be (even more) sick of New York. The Liberty and Fever begin a home-and-home set this evening, and tomorrow night, the Indiana Pacers try to save their season against the hated New York Knicks in the NBA playoffs. Should be a fun weekend.

 174.
We’ll get to the matchup everyone is hyped for in a minute, but the battle at center is going to be pretty fascinating in its own right. Jonquel Jones was the Liberty’s best player on Tuesday night as her 27 points and eight rebounds kept the Liberty in it. Brondello has mentioned that JJ looks better than ever, and if that’s the case, watch out. She’s at full strength and is further away from the foot fracture she suffered in the 2022 Finals. With Jones fully activated on both sides of the ball, the Liberty go from excellent to potentially historic. She’ll have the matchup against one of the best young players in basketball. Aliyah Boston had a magnificent 2023 as she was the unanimous Rookie of the Year as well as an All Star. She struggled against the Sun as their size proved to be a bit too much for her, but she’s a quick learner and is able to bounce back in a hurry. For Jones and the Liberty, staying out of foul trouble is job number one. Boston is a matchup nightmare and having Jones guarding her and drawing her out to the perimeter on the offensive end can help limit her impact.

 175.
If NaLyssa Smith has the ball, chances are she’s looking to score. Smith led the Fever in usage rate last season and with all the focus on Indiana’s big stars, she’ll have plenty of chances to find offense for herself. She’ll look to press the issue against Breanna Stewart. Stew York had a slow start to 2024 on Tuesday as she only scored eight points on 3-9 shooting in 31 minutes. The great thing about this Liberty team is they have more than enough star power to withstand an off night from the MVP, and with Kennedy Burke providing great minutes as the backup forward, the team can put less on Stewart’s shoulders throughout the regular season.

 176.
Player to watch: Caitlin Clark

 177.
Welcome to the future. Women's basketball in college and the pros have been on an upswing in recent years, and Clark enters the pro game looking to push things into the stratosphere. How’s she doing on that front?

 178.

 179.

 180.
Caitlin Clark's WNBA debut was the league's most-watched game in decades.

While the star suffered a blowout loss, it was a massive win for the WNBA and ESPN, says @mgfleming12 ⬇️
— Front Office Sports (@FOS) May 16, 2024

 182.
 183.
 184.

 185.
Well alright! In addition, teams across the league have moved Fever games to larger arenas to accommodate the fan interest Clark is generating. Amazon is also doing a pregame show, which I don't recall them doing for any games besides the Commissioner’s Cup last season.

 186.
There have been so many big picture conversations surrounding Clark, so I won’t spend too much time on it here and will instead let Ari Chambers’ words speak for themselves:

 187.
“It’s our job as media and talking heads to spread the history and show that it’s super rich. Dating back to Title IX, varsity sports, the ABL and the WNBA in its infancy — those players had to push past boundaries and major roadblocks just to get mainstream attention. We can’t erase that.

 188.
“Caitlin is the beneficiary of all the hard work of the previous legends. I want people to know that that everything you see now, they’re privileged enough to be the beneficiaries of those who are doing the groundwork. Caitlin is an integral piece of continuing to build that.”

 189.
The game has always been fun, and it's great that the league’s TV partners have decided to get serious and take things to a new level. Keep it up.

 190.
On the court, it was a rough pro debut for the number one pick as her ten turnovers made for a long evening for her and the Fever. And when you turn it over that many times, you need to get back in the lab

 191.

 192.

 193.
A main topic of discussion from Caitlin Clark's official WNBA debut was her 10 turnovers. For SportsCenter, here's what Clark and Christie Sides had to say last night about that issue. pic.twitter.com/jcFwtTmsMq
— Alexa Philippou (@alexaphilippou) May 15, 2024
 194.

 195.
 196.
 197.

 198.
It doesn’t get any easier from here, but she’ll be ready for it.

 199.
Who gets the Clark assignment? The smart money is on the Liberty's best perimeter defender, Betnijah Laney-Hamilton. Bee continues to do everything well for the Liberty and her clutch defense and timely buckets on Opening Night powered New York to the finish line. Laney-Hamilton fills in every gap for this team and connects everything together for Sandy Brondello’s club. We might also see Marquesha Davis get a crack at guarding Clark. The Liberty’s rookie was the only player who didn’t play on Tuesday night, so getting her a chance to defend Clark and speed her up could make for a nice change of pace.

 200.
You know you’re doing something right when a 15/8/7/1/2 night doesn’t register as a particularly great game. That’s where Sabrina Ionescu found herself on Tuesday evening as she didn’t have her greatest, but did help seal the deal with four clutch free throws towards the end of the night. One thing from Tuesday that stood out was we saw Ionescu drive to the basket a bit more than what we’re used to. That was something Liberty GM Jonathan Kolb mentioned during exit interviews last year, and the Liberty are at their best when they’re attacking the basket and not settling for jumpers. Against a Fever team that was porous on defense last year, those rim attempts will be there for New York.

 229.
So, no pressure on new head coach Jordi Fernández, right? Not quite.

 230.
Fernandez, whose been highly touted around the NBA, has the task of turning a 32-win Nets team into a competitive squad. He may have some help with the potential addition of a star, but that’s yet to be determined. As for his resume — it speaks for itself — with or without a star.

 238.
Sacramento Kings associate coach (2022-24).

 239.

 240.
During his introductory press conference, Fernández was asked what excites him about the roster he’s inheriting, to which he responded: “A team that has the ability to play fast in the full-court, half-court. The youth is always great, right, because that allows you to have a team for the long run. That’s what excites me the most, and to make players better. Our job as coaches is to work with those guys and to take them to the next step. If they don’t get better it’s on me and the rest of the coaching staff, so I’m excited about the process.”

 267.
SpidaSaga? MitchellMania? Buckle up.

Can ‘Spida’ swoop in and save the Nets?

 268.
It’s been no secret that Sean Marks and the Brooklyn Nets may go big-game hunting during the 2024 offseason if the opportunity arises. One particular name continues to appear in the Brooklyn rumor mill: Donovan Mitchell. The reports have been persistent that the 27-year-old New York native will forego his player option with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2025-26 season, forcing Cavs GM Koby Altman to either get something for him this summer or be faced with losing him for nothing.

 269.
The Athletic laid out the specifics Wednesday.

 270.

 271.
Mitchell is under contract for next season and has a $37 million player option for 2025-26, but he is eligible for that four-year extension this summer. Should he decline the extension, the Cavs would have to consider trading him or risk losing him as a free agent in 2025.

 272.
If Mitchell is a free agent in 2025, he is eligible to sign for a max of five years and $269.9 million with the team that holds his Bird rights (the Cavs now) or four years, $200.1 million with a new team.

 273.

 274.
In that same report, Shams Charania wrote that there’s “growing sentiment around the league that Donovan Mitchell will sign a lucrative extension with the Cavs” this summer.

 275.
Then Thursday, Adrian Wojnarowski spoke with Mitchell who denied a key part of the narrative surrounding his future, that he’s unhappy in Cleveland.

 276.
“I reached out to Donovan Mitchell today,” Wojnarowski said. “And he was emphatic in telling me that he is not disgruntled with anyone or anything in Cleveland. In fact, he said to me, ‘I am happy in Cleveland. I’ve been happy since I arrived in Cleveland.’”

 277.
Then, Mitchell himself checked in…

 278.

 283.
 284.

 285.
Yet after a disappointing playoff run, trade whispers are only getting louder about Mitchell’s long term prospects. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, who has been all over the Spida Saga (trademark pending!), reported Wednesday on “Get Up” that the Lakers and Nets are among a number of teams with offers ready for the Cavaliers. First, they have to accept the fate.

 286.

 287.
“The question is, for an organization and ownership who have lost players like LeBron, if Donovan simply just says ‘I love it here!’ and I’m not going to extend. What do they do? Do they roll the dice with this team again or do they say, ‘No way we gotta take action’ and that is a huge potential question coming for June and July.”

 288.
“There are a number of teams that have their offers ready.”

 289.

 290.
Chiney Ogwumike and Mike Greenberg followed up by asking if the Lakers and Knicks are two of those team.

 291.

“Of course, absolutely. I don’t think — the Knicks are trying to win this Eastern Conference series, but certainly across the river there in Brooklyn.”

 292.

 293.

 296.
 297.
 298.

 299.
Windhorst has been calling the Nets a potential destination for the New York kid since December. And for whatever it’s worth, this comes moments before the Cavs deemed Mitchell (calf) out of a pivotal Game 5 against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

 300.
The Nets have excess draft picks — 10 firsts including seven that can be traded this summer. Moreover, the Nets haul is considered one of the best in part because only one of the future firsts they accumulated in their superstar trades is protected. Mitchell is also close with Mikal Bridges. Not to mention his father, Donovan Mitchell Sr., is the New York Mets director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. He also owns a home in the area. The home roots are there.

 301.
What would get it done?

 302.
“It’s gotta be a trade that puts you in the same spot or gets them a chance to get them back in the same spot because they’ve mortgaged their future. It’s kinda like the Nets a little bit.” Windy said in December 2023.

 303.
Yossi Gozlan the former Hoopshype capologist now with capsheets.com told NetsDaily Friday that he can see a scenario in which the Nets could acquire Mitchell using a package heavy on draft picks and veteran players.

 304.
“They could do Ben Simmons straight up, or they could do Dennis Schroder and Dorian Finney-Smith to satisfy salary matching,” said Gozlan who noted that the Nets wealth of picks could protect Cam Thomas.
“I’m not really factoring in Cam Thomas or his value because the Nets have enough picks alone to make a satisfactory offer.”

 305.
Of course, the Cavaliers might want Thomas, having reportedly inquired about him before his breakout season in 2023-24.

 321.
15 TO THE RAFTERS: Brooklyn Nets to retire Vince Carter’s jersey

 322.

 327.

 328.
 329.
Nearly 15 years after they traded him to the Orlando Magic and just before he’s being invested in the Hall of Fame, Nets will raise Vince Carter’s jersey to the rafters.

Half man. Half amazing. Whole New Jersey Net legend.

 330.
After months of speculation following his election to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and a few days of teasing across social media, Vince Carter is officially getting his jersey retired by the now Brooklyn Nets.

 331.
The team announced its plan to put his jersey in the rafters this morning with a roughly three minute long video beginning with his game winner vs the Toronto Raptors in 2006. Over the highlight a familiar sounding voice could be heard breaking the news to Carter that “his number 15 will take its rightful place among the franchise greats.”

 332.
“Oh s**t,” said Carter, with a smile on his face, after seeing a photograph of his jersey banner right beside former running mate Jason Kidd.

 333.

 334.
A message from Kidd then followed where he thanked and congratulated Carter, capping off the vaguely “Last Dance” style announcement video.

 335.
While Carter is most closely associated with the Toronto Raptors, where he began and popularized basketball in hockey-mad Canada, his time in New Jersey often gets overlooked. He played almost as many games in the Meadowlands as he did in Air Canada Center — 374 to 403 — and actually averaged more points — 23.6 to 23.4. His assists, rebounds and shooting percentage were also higher in New Jersey.

 336.
Indeed of the 25,728 points he scored for eight different NBA teams across four decades, a third of them, 8,834 points, came in those games for the Nets over five seasons. (VC, it should always be noted, missed only 11 games in New Jersey, all of them losses.)

 337.
And of course, there were the classic calls by Ian Eagle who VC now sits aside on YES Network broadcasts. Here’s an hour of them from our old friend, MaxaMillion711…

 338.

 339.
The Nets didn’t announce a specific date for the ceremony but when the NBA releases its schedule in August, look for the first home game vs Toronto. You’d have to think that’s a good bet!

 340.
NetsDaily and a number of Nets fans have long lobbied for the move. VC will now join Kidd (No. 5), Drazen Petrovic (No. 3), John Williamson (No. 23), Bill Melchionni (No. 25), Julius Erving (No. 32) and Buck Williams (No. 52)

 362.

 363.
 364.
It wasn’t easy. In fact, it was often ugly. But the New York Liberty opened the 2024 season with a win in Washington.

“We have to come out with the mindset and the mentality that we have to grind out wins. There’s still going to be a little, some funky parts of our game, no doubt ... But we have to just make sure we’ve gritty right from the beginning, especially with our starters.”

 365.
That was the message from New York Liberty Head Coach Sandy Brondello as her team prepared to open their season with a road game against the Washington Mystics on Tuesday night.

 366.
The Mystics were sure to bring the grit, as a team that had not only given New York all they could handle in round one of last season’s playoffs, but after re-tooling their roster in the offseason to kick-start a self-admitted rebuild, are roundly predicted to toil near the bottom of the standings this year. Brittany Sykes and Ariel Atkins might want to say something about that.

 367.
In the first half, they did, combining for four steals against a Liberty team whose grit was overshadowed by their sloppiness. Ten first-half turnovers were the story of the first 20 minutes, as some absurd shot-making by Jonquel Jones wasn’t enough to pull away from the home team...

 368.

 373.
 374.

 375.
Washington’s bigs matched Jones offensively, with off-season export Stefanie Dolson and Shakira Austin splashing threes and long twos even when well-contested. The Entertainment and Sports Arena was buzzing by tip-off, and their performances kept the crowd into it even as the Liberty built a 40-30 lead just before half-time.

 376.
It got real serious when the Mystics closed the half on a 13-0 run, as the Liberty continued to turn it over while their shot-making started to fade. New York’s revamped bench had some nice moments — Ivana Dojkić and Leonie Fiebich made nice defensive plays, Kennedy Burke hit a jumper, Nyara Sabally had a big block...

 385.
“I thought Washington really threw a lot at us and we found some rhythm, we had some momentum, we’d get up, and then we’d let them straight back in, and usually it was from turnovers or taking quick shots,” said the head coach.

 386.
Not even the starters could stem the tide, as a 43-40 deficit at the half ballooned to an eight-point gap by the end of third quarter, which Washington capped with a half-court heave that was all net...

 391.
 392.
 393.

 394.
It wasn’t just miracles that went against the Libs in the third quarter. They left Atkins open time and again, as Washington’s shooting guard hit four threes on her way to 20 points. 20 seconds of locked-in defense were wasted by one last screen the Libs didn’t see coming. Brondello even tried mixing in some zone defense, which didn’t go much better.

 395.
It wasn’t about the X’s and O’s. New York just needed to play better, play tougher, and make the underdog Mystics feel them. Finally, they did to start the fourth quarter, with 80% of their starting five on the court, only with Breanna Stewart replaced by Kennedy Burke.

 396.
Burke’s fourth-quarter stint was the strongest individual moment for any Liberty reserve, as she scored a quick four points as part of a lineup that cut the deficit to 71-70, midway through the final frame.

 397.
“I thought I thought she did great,” said Brondello. “I mean, fourth quarter we’re down by eight I think, and Kennedy, she has experience. I think that helps. The moment didn’t faze her. She really played and read off the rest of the starters out there too, and that’s what we’re going to need.”

 398.
Stewart would check back in, but never got it going, shooting just 3-of-9 to finish with 8-and-8, and three turnovers. Her front-court partner Jones never turned the engine off, though, on her way to 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting.

 399.
“To come back and see [off-season work] kind of come to fruition, it does feel good. I know I said it in preseason and training camp, but where I was last year versus where I am this year,” said Jones, referencing starting last season with a foot injury, “I don’t I don’t take it for granted.

 400.
But the Bahamian big would need somebody to come along with her, someone to take advantage of all the space left in Washington's paint, created by Jones sticking along the perimeter for much of the night. (Seven of her 17 shots came from deep).

 401.
Sabrina Ionescu and Courtney Vandersloot had their hands full trying to contain Brittany Sykes, who turned up her aggression in the second half to near a triple-double with 14-10-7. Neither of New York’s guards did much in the way of scoring, combining for 7-of-21 shooting including 1-of-9 from deep, though they did tally 13 assists.

 402.
Ultimately, it was Betnijah Laney-Hamilton who answered the call, picking up right where she left off in the 2023 season. The Rutgers product filled gaps, attacking closeouts, shooting threes when defenders went under screens, even getting hot enough that straight isolations were a good option for New York, scoring ten of her 20 points in the fourth...

 403.

 404.

 405.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton just going to work. This is such a pro bucket: pic.twitter.com/k5QQEyTI90
— Lucas Kaplan (@LucasKaplan_) May 15, 2024
 406.

 407.
 408.
 409.

 410.
“I started to figure it out as the season went,” said Laney-Hamilton of her offensive role, “and now that we’ve had an offseason and everything, I just feel a lot more comfortable.”

 411.
Yet, the Libs still needed a few breaks to go their way. The Mystics fought like hell, with Sykes waltzing into the paint too easily a couple times to bring her team within a single point.

 412.
Then, on their next possession, Dolson launched a pick-and-pop three, seemingly destined to go in. Wouldn’t it be perfect? After getting smoked in the nation’s capital to open last season, the Liberty could experience the same result to start 2024, only it’d be a heart-breaking loss sealed by an old friend.

 413.
Nope. Dolson’s three rimmed off, and somehow, Shakira Austin, who made everything else on Tuesday night, missed an open put-back layup. The Liberty would play there free-throw game and get one final stop, a possession with far less excitement that ended in a Karlie Samuelson airball, and notch their first win of the season.

 414.
It wasn’t easy, and it certainly wasn’t perfect. Breanna Stewart didn’t wash up overnight, but ... a strong game from the reigning MVP would quell some worries after her poor postseason and rough start to ‘24. The Liberty still went swaths of the game without a paint touch, as Ionescu and Vandersloot looked far less dynamic than their counterparts, Atkins and Sykes.

 415.
Even the brand-new broadcast was rough at best, with My9 camera angles frequently lagging behind, and pinch-hitter John Fanta and Julianne Viani-Braen bungling some names, times, and scores.

 416.
But a win is a win. And the New York Liberty are off to a 1-0 start, with upcoming contests against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.

 417.
It’s good to be back.

 418.
Final Score: New York Liberty 85, Washington Mystics 80.

 419.
Next Up
