2. ... "Nuthin', what's a motto you?" (Lion King)

  3. I can't hear the word motto without thinking about Timon and Pumba. Now a bit more than 30 days into the job, motto had become super important to me of late. It may sound as if I am simply "drinking the Kool-Aid", but when you have a good motto, its worth talking about. Coda's motto (or tagline) is Do something great. Every day. Being in the software business, there is a very real risk of missing the mark with your solution should it come out at an inappropriate time, be irrelevant in its message or function, or any other number of conditions that have led many good things to an unfortunate end. Every day I try to do my part to ensure this does not happen with Maestro.
4.
5. Coda's motto couldn't be more appropriate for our line of work, as if we do not move the needle even just a little bit each and every day, there is a chance someone else may seize our market. Keeping an eye on the future, while managing the tasks of the day, and learning from the past and those before you can definitely leave someone with a dizzying view of life. We don't have to always see in all directions, just never lose sight of the goal and nudge, leap, claw, climb, run, fly, whatever you need to in the right direction and good things will happen. Maintaining momentum is easier than trying to generate it in the first place Motivating multiple teams to move in one direction to build, market, sell, and manage the flagship product offering for a new company has been extremely rewarding and an amazing growing experience so far, and it is JUST starting!
6.
7. So my advice to all, do SOMETHING every day. Make it great, or trust that it will be a step towards something great regardless, and see what happens. Positivity is as contagious as negativity, but has a better effect on morale and productivity. Try to see the positive in all that is happening around you, and continue on your respective journeys. You never know how your journey may overlap someone else's and the amazing things that happen when you get the right band together.
9.

  10.

  11. Beyond racking up status points, I also highly valued the customers who saw me as their "trusted advisor" for all things within my area of expertise. Building the laundry list of skills like a buzz-word dictionary to describe what I "do". So, what do I do? I have always gravitated towards collaboration as a focus area of expertise. Over the years this discipline has been referred to as knowledge management, or more recently social collaboration, or others I cannot think of at the moment. Regardless, my career has been largely centered around helping people work together better, faster, or more efficiently. I do not see this entirely changing, but for me it is evolving.

  12.

  13.

  14.

  15. This brings me to the topic at hand, which is Coda Global. This latest chapter in my career is built on the same foundation as always, helping people work together better, but with a twist. Among other focus areas, Coda is a product company, and I am the first to bear the title of Conductor. Our business platform is a cloud solution, built with a combination of open source and proprietary IP, designed to provide large enterprise like capabilities to small and medium size businesses in an affordable and flexible manner. Conductors in music help direct and shape the performance of a group, so too do Coda Conductors We take the base platform (our score) and work with customers and our service professionals (the orchestra) and deliver a solution (performance) to solve the complex and sometimes unique needs of our customers. The most significant difference for us is that we do not see each of the movements of our piece as stand alone engagements, but rather a variation on the theme, which offers opportunity for features and capabilities to find their way back into the product. This productized approach also affords us the opportunity to be prescriptive with certain behaviors and aspects of the tooling, but our services arm is capable of tailoring to the business needs of the individual customers we work with.

  16.

  17.

  18.

  19. So, take a moment to get to know Coda Global. Understand our differentiators and capabilities. Perhaps we can bring better harmony to your organization too.

  25.
26. If you are not aware, MEAN is a fullstack JavaScript framework comprised of MongoDB, express, AngularJS, and nodejs. This JS app stack is extremely flexible and I wanted to learn more about the underlying technologies used in MUSE. To get started, I figured I would fire up an Ubuntu server and install the stack. Sounded like a simple enough task, and obvious place to begin. After a day or so of failed attempts, hunting down error messages, troubleshooting, and piecing together documentation from the four corners of the internet, I have the formula for making the stack work. Here are my notes in the event they prove to help anyone else. (and so I don't forget)
27.
28. I started with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. As always I immediately ran the apt commands to refresh the repo information and then install the latest patches. I will assume that the readers know how to do this, and a fully patched Ubuntu 14.04 LTS installation is the starting point.
29.
30. PROCESS:
31.
32.

  33.
First I needed to install a few things to make the environment ready for development tasks.

sudo apt-get install gpm vim vim-doc vim-scripts build-essential curl git

  34.
One of the issues I encountered was a WRITE SAME error when installing MongoDB. To prevent that issue, I found a helpful script in an article (referenced) linked here to address the issue:

http://ewen.mcneill.gen.nz/blog/media/disable-write-same

  35.
Next I needed to install MongoDB on my own. I followed the instructions provided in the link found in the reference section to mongodb.org. They were:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv 7F0CEB10

echo 'deb http://downloads-distro.mongodb.org/repo/ubuntu-upstart dist 10gen' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mongodb.list

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install -y mongodb-org

  36.
After installing MongoDB, I then continued on to install nodejs. I was able to follow the simple instructions from the mean.io site.
curl -sL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup | sudo bash -

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install nodejs

  37.
TIP: BE SURE TO INSTALL GIT IF YOU MISSED IT EARLIER!!

  38.
Git installs and does not always setup the git:// protocol resolution correctly. To compensate for that I had to run:

git config --global url."https://".insteadOf git://

  39.
With MongoDB, Node ,and the necessary underlying system stuff underway, I now turned my attention to the mean tools.

npm install -g grunt-cli

npm install -g bower

npm install -g mean-cli

  40.
With mean installed, I now had the stack, but there is a default administration application that needed to be setup. I used mean to initialize the default admin application.

mean init <myApp> (where <myApp> is the name of whatever you want to call your default application)

cd <myApp> && npm install

  41.
Now I started the application I just setup.

grunt

  42.
I then just pointed my browser at my server on port 3000 and was able to see the default app.

http://<server.name>:3000

  43.

  57.
58. The key messages for the week were definitely centered around IBM Verse and whats new in IBM Connections. If you have not found what Verse is, take a look here. It is without a doubt one of the biggest innovations in personal information management. Blending Watson with email, calendar and a really intuitive UI. It is definitely something to keep an eye on.
59.
60. For Connections, Luis Benitez kicked off the week with a spectacular demo of what is coming, including Watson search and analytics integration, an improved homepage, and the most exciting community customization enhancements I have seen to date. Luis has a great summation on his blog.
61.
62. There was other news from the IBM camp about realignment of resources, new offerings, and the normal smattering of great stuff. Of particular note to me was a small project out of the IBM Labs, Project MUSE. It is an amazing little collection of JavaScript technologies that enables one to customize and extend cloud delivered offerings as if they were on-premise. It injects customizations into the HTTP packets on the fly, and by using caching and predictive services, there is no performance hit. (They showed studies of performance gains to be honest.) I can definitely say that MUSE is now very much on MY radar and am extremely eager to see what happens with it.
66. In the arena of Connections / Portal, we have seen a great deal of maturity. I have been working for over a year now on building social portals with a few different organizations. Taking advantage of Social Rendering, DDC, the advancements made with the Connections Portlets, and many other technologies. I hope to see some coverage on these technologies as they have grown, but I don't expect them to be the crowning jewel of the show as they were in years past.
75.
76. Social Rendering is a feature of Portal / WCM released with the 8.0.0.1 update. It enables developers and integrators to surface lists of Connections content using WCM conventions (presentation template, authoring template, PZN & HTML components, piece of content, and a web content portlet) and then quickly or easily modify the UI to match the Portal design. This is a significant enhancement to the traditional pattern of developing API portlets to do this very task because the API query is built for you in the piece of content that represents your list. It also separates the design from the logic so that when making edits or changes to the HTML components for UI changes, there is no risk of ruining the business logic behind the list.
77.

  78. *NOTE* As of the time of this writing, the default behavior of Social Rendering is not real time. It operates on a delay of ~15 minutes do to the architecture. Workarounds may be employed, but to do so there may be harmful side effects. Tuning and optimization of Social Rendering is not going to be covered in this post.

  79. The first step for our team, however, was to get our arms around Social Rending. How does it work? What are the pieces and parts we need? Which component in WCM do I use to control which aspect of this solution? These answers were critical to our success and once we realized how these pieces all fit together, the flexibility that it truly affords, the possibilities became numerous quite quickly. As is often the case, I wanted to capture these important points of information somewhere and my blog is the place for such things so I can refer back later and maybe even a few others will learn from my struggles as well.
80.
81. Once you install Portal 8.0.0.1 and make sure the 8.0.0.1 features are all enabled, a series of portlets will now be available to be added to your Portal pages. These portlets are all lists of something, such as the "List of Blogs" portlet. These are all special instances of a web content portlet preconfigured to also setup a piece of content that represents a search against Connections. Staying with the List of Blogs example, this particular list should display all of the blog posts that the current user has access to. It is the equivalent of searching for everything and then changing the scope to Blogs in Connections.
82.
83. This leads me to the next important point, which is Social Rendering makes use of the Connections Search API to find the content it displays. It truly is a search operation, the results of which are what is displayed in the portlet.
84.
85. Now that we know how we obtain the data, the second half of the equation is what is responsible for rendering the list. This is a bit more complex of an answer. In the WCM Library Explorer you should be able to find the IBM Connections library. This is the library that is setup when Social Rendering is enabled that includes the components which are responsible for the design of the Social Rendering lists. There are the expected authoring and presentation templates, but these are very generic and point to secondary components with reference another level of component. I have found ti generally safe to use these same components for most lists. The magic really happens when the content is run through the PZN engine and the PZN component applied. The PZN component functions like a standard WCM navigator in that it has a header, body, and footer design block. These blogs call HTML components which contain the markup that is applied to the search results. This would be the injection point for customization as you can have the component reference a custom PZN component that links to custom HTML components.
86.
87. In short, Social Rendering is a search result from Connections that is then handed to the PZN engine where UI elements are applied to the list of results. The search type / criteria can be manipulated in the piece of content and the UI controlled with the PZN and associated HTML components. These are then displayed with the standard web content portlets that are used for all WCM content on a Portal page.
88.
89. The out-of-the-box lists all make use of the OneUI standard and are responsive UI friendly to fit into the Portal default UI. Your cusotmizations may change this or not require the OneUI standard, but it is good to note this fact.
90.
91. Hopefully this is more helpful than confusing to those looking in from the outside. For some specific information about social rendering, refer to the Portal Wiki.
92.
93. As an additional tip, one should also note that there are synergies between the Social Rendering lists and the IBM Connections Portlets for WebSphere Portal from IBM Greenhouse. I intended to cover that in a bit more detail in a subsequent post. Just be sure to grab the correct version of the portlets as the older versions do not have the same support for Social Rendering.
211.
212. IBM has provided a demo example in the product wiki to walk you through the steps to execute a simple extension.
213.
214. The beauty of this approach is that code which would previously have been put into a custom attribute definition (which still works for backwards compatibility) can now be either placed into a custom FreeMarker macro in the commonUtil.ftl or can simply be wrapped around the display macro for the field in the other templates.
215.
216. One word of advice, the documentation still has remnants of the Connections 3.x methodologies and links within some of the pages weave you between both methodologies. When looking for information on enabling extension attributes for editing via the API, for example, it still references all configuration being done in the profiles-config.xml. That file has been broken up into multiple files, with certain configuration remaining there and other configurations being moved to profiles-types.xml.
217.
218. If the OOTB template files are not extreme enough of a UI change for you, it would appear that the documentation indicates you can completely rewrite the display and editing templates to your liking. The ability to add/remove tabs from Profiles, reorder fields (which I have already used this for), add new fields, etc makes for a very flexible and interesting feature now.
219.
220. Last note, there is a setting which you will want to explore:
221.
222.

  223. <layoutConfiguration>
  <!--
   UI Template rendering configuration information
   -->
    <templateConfiguration>
<!-- FTL template reloading to test customization, in production this value should be set to 0, but during customization set to value in seconds -->
      <templateReloading>1</templateReloading>

  224.

  225. ...

  226.

  227. </templateConfiguration>

  228. </layoutConfiguration>
229.
230. This will ensure that while developing your templates checking them out and in without restart will render your changes.
231.
232. Happy Customizing!
233.
There may be items in the files on the HTTP server that you will need to incorporate into your upgrade.
Changes to css are now located in <Connections_Data>/shared/customization/themes/defaultTheme and wind up being rolled into a "virtual" css "default.css". This is NOT dynamically generated and requires a restart of the Common application to rebuild the file. (Did not test to see if there is a timed interval that rebuilds this.) NOT EFFECTED by the UI debug WAS parameter.

iOS Connections Mobile Update

If you have not found it yet, it appears the updated connections iOS app has hit iTunes. Make sure that your customers are aware of these items and the April 26th date .

1)The password to the Plugin-key.kdb file that is shipped with the WebSphere Plugin install will expire on April 26, 2012:

Please refer to the following link for additional details.

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21588312

The impact of the "password expiration issue in the above flash" is that the https transport between the WebSphere plugin and back-end AppServers will stop working, if not resolved. It means that the Plugin-key.kdb (and the personal & signer certificates in it) will not be loaded during the plugin initialization and the https transport will not be used.

2) The personal certificate called "WebSphere Plugin Key" within the plugin-key.kdb that is shipped with the WebSphere Plugin install will expire on April 26, 2012:

Please refer to the following link for additional details.

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21577327

This will affect those WebSphere AppServers that are configured to require SSL client authentication (SSL mutual authentication) and that are using the default WebSphere plug-in key. Most of our customers did not configure WebSphere AppServers to use SSL mutual authentication between the plug-in and WebSphere AppServers.

<link href="http://socialaboration.blogspot.com/2012/04/websphere-plugin-key-password.html" rel="alternate" title="WebSphere Plugin Key & I have been working almost exclusively with the same customer since November on a really cool project and it is finally reaching a point that I can talk about it… a bit. We (Ascendant) partnered with IBM and T-Systems to bring to fruition a working content migration utility that can take content FROM SharePoint and populate it into Connections / Quickr / WCM. (Yes… any or all of the three mentioned have a native connector for the utility from T-Systems now thanks to our project.) Beyond just grabbing the content, transforming it, and then pushing it into the correct content area, we are able to maintain content ownership and impersonate other users at migration time without impacting those users. This is truly a first of it’s kind solution to the best of my knowledge. Hats off to the whole team we have been working with. I know I am excited to be part of this, as I am sure most of the other team members are as well. This brings real choice to the market as people now have the availability to move their content between platforms.

Thank You everyone that made this possible!

Sametime Applets to Expire

Sametime Meeting applets certificate expires March 19; 8.5.1 upgrade when this was encountered. If you have implemented the work around as listed in the above technote, it will break the Quickr login page. The rendered HTML will be malformed, and you will not be able to use the Quickr login page which allows for non-directory members logging into the server / places.
If you would like to create a banner that links to this page (i.e. this validation result), do the following:

  1. Download the "valid Atom 1.0" banner.

  2. Upload the image to your own server. (This step is important. Please do not link directly to the image on this server.)

  3. Add this HTML to your page (change the image src attribute if necessary):

If you would like to create a text link instead, here is the URL you can use:
