39.
Recently I came across a problem on a Traveler server.

40.
41.
42.
43.
The customer had a pre-existing Traveler server, everything was still working but there was an error in the log (which was also filling up the inbox of admins)

44.
45.
46.
47.
“ID failed to authenticate in vault

48.
49.
50.
51.
ID for USERNAME ID failed to authenticate in vault SERVERNAME. SERVERNAME made request. User not found in the ID vault.”

52.
53.
54.
55.
The Server doesn’t have ID Vault. The Server never had ID Vault. In fact the domain doesn’t and never had ID Vault. The Traveler server sits in a DMZ in a different Domino Directory to the production LAN based environment, doing lookups via Directory Assistance. (the internal Domino Directory does have ID Vault)

56.
57.
58.
59.
The only recent change? A new configuration document was created for the server and this setting (which first came in Domino 11) defaults to on.

60.
61.
62.
63.

64.
65.
66.
67.
Odd set of circumstances but if a description of the issue had been given to me without being to look at the environment I’m not sure I would have figured it out. In this case changing Internet Password Verification to “Check internet password in directory” resolved the issue.

68.

153.
In October both Gmail and Yahoo published information about restrictions they are bringing in from February 2024 for bulk senders (defined as sending 5000 messages to their addresses in one day).

154.
155.
156.
157.
These are not really “new” per say, but are going to become more strictly enforced by next week. They come under three main headings

158.
159.
160.
161.
(1) Authenticate your emails using security protocols ( DKIM, SPF, and DMARC.)

162.
163.
164.
165.
(2) Implement one-click list-unsubscribe, and honor unsubscribes within two days.

166.
167.
168.
169.
(3) Maintain a spam complaint rate under 0.3% (no more than three spam reports for every 1,000 messages).

170.
171.
172.
173.
Very likely you should have most of this in play already (or your messages will likely already be blocked). The first thing to state is, if you’re not sending bulk emails to Gmail or Yahoo, nothing will change. Where people might get caught out is with third party Marketing services.

174.
175.
176.
177.
For point (1) – Regardless of technology, if you are sending mails on the internet, you likely have had a SPF record for many years. (otherwise many of your mails have not being delivered to many people for a long time). For Domino you can implement DKIM natively since Domino 12. DMARC isn’t yet available fully natively in Domino, but that doesn’t mean you can’t publish a record. I’d also note Gmail has a requirement around TLS connections since December for all bulk senders. (which obviously Domino is compliant with)

178.
179.
180.
181.
For point (2) – If you’re sending mails to the EU, under GDPR you’ve had to have this for the last 6 years, so I can’t imagine too many organisations being caught out specifically by this.

182.
183.
184.
185.
For point (3) – Postmaster Tools is probably the best way to keep on top of this. It should be something you are aware of already if you’re mass mailing.

186.
187.
188.
189.
I hope you found it useful, I think for most organisations the IT section may be aware of this, but the marketing section using a third party mailing solution may not be, so it’s the last chance to get this right before the end of the month. Once you get on a blacklist it may be difficult to get off quickly, particularly as they have given months of notice of the change.

271.
There’s been “enablement” webinars on versions before but they’ve usually been quite spaced out. I think this is a simple but effective innovation from HCL and I look forward to this series of Webinars to get momentum into people deploying Domino 14.

359.
Considering you’re reading a blog about Domino, you may likely have seen that Domino 14 was released recently, you can catch the launch video here if you missed it.

360.
361.
362.
363.
Domino 14 is another major release from HCL. We had three big public betas. This really allows access to the people making the decisions to heed feedback from all types of end users. It’s something HCL has done exceptionally well.

364.
365.
366.
367.
The primary features I’ve seen people focus on are:

368.
369.
370.
· AutoUpdate (the ability to download and distribute software from HCL automatically from your Domino server – this will soon also have the ability to auto-deploy to your servers).

371.

372.
Option to run Domino as non-admin user in Windows on install. (Daniel Nashed summarizes what you need to consider here)

373.

374.

375.
· The Domino core update. (this is one where people go OK – what does that do for me? Well various things, but at a high level I think it shows a long term commitment to the development of the platform, and it shows investment in resiliency of the platform).

376.

377.
· Admin central (new web based Domino app for doing help desk type of tasks)

378.

379.
The auto-inclusion of Verse, Nomad, and Ontime in Domino. Out of box. (This one seems a no brainer – but it’s great to see regardless – you can still apply updates, which for Nomad in particular has a regular quarterly release scale anyway – Nomad 1.0.10 has been released since Domino 14 with a basic version of Designer included).

380.

381.

382.
· Passkey Authentication (arguably the most immediately useful feature in Domino 14)

383.

384.

385.
This is a major release and there is a lot to consider here. HCL have put together a series of deep dive webinars through January and February on several Domino 14 topics. Conveniently you can register for all in one go and go to which one’s you like then. Just register here.

386.

387.

388.
One thing I’d like to mention here as I haven’t seen an overemphasis on it elsewhere is the number of different new security features included in Domino 14. To a certain extent I think it was widely publicized how many new security features there were in Domino 12. If anything there’s even more in this release. It’s something that probably is taken for granted with Domino. It is rock solid on security.

389.
The other obvious thing the state is that there is now no 32 bit Notes client. It’s all 64 bit only. (this is quite overdue anyway and has been well flagged in advance – but it is something to consider).

390.

391.

392.

393.

394.
A couple of years ago at the release of Domino 12, I did a blog post on the 101 NEW features of Domino 12. This got some decent feedback within the community.

395.
I’ve looked at this release in a similar fashion. Instead of 101 New features, this time we’ve got to 86 NEW Features of Domino 14. (This includes Domino server, Notes client, Designer, Restyle, Traveler but doesn’t list any bug fixes of which there are 366 in Notes/Domino alone). I must point out that the Domino core update is such a significant undertaking that getting anywhere near the same amount of features as Domino 12 is amazing.

396.
So here’s the list of 86 NEW Features of Domino 14:

397.

794.
One of the best things HCL have brought in over the previous few years have been really active early access and beta programs for releases.

795.
796.
797.
798.
One that probably doesn’t get enough attention if the one for Nomad for Web Browsers.

799.
800.
801.
802.
This year alone there’s been at least 8 different versions deployed to their Sandbox environment. (there may be more these are the versions I’ve used). It is the quickest way to see and give feedback on Domino Restyle updates.

803.
804.
805.
806.
Nomad for Web browsers 1.0.9 was only released a week ago and this week the sandboxed environment has been updated to the first early access version (I think it’s actually called a Pre-Release) of 1.0.10, which contains The Designer Client in Nomad Web (which I believe was officially announced at CollabSphere). It’s possibly the natural conclusion to restyle beginning it’s life in Nomad.

807.
808.
809.
810.

811.
812.
813.
814.
Now as with everything in Nomad Web, it’s not a tool you pickup to complete every single task, but it is a very handy tool to have in your toolkit. To a simple admin like myself, a mobile non-full eclipse designer client sounds great as an option for certain tasks. From early testing for me this morning it is very snappy.

815.
816.
817.
818.

819.
820.
821.
822.
You can deploy your own apps in the sandboxed environment if you’d like to test further. You can request access here so give it a try!

823.
824.
825.
826.
The more developers that can test this (and it’s limitations) at this point the better. The fixes come really quickly on this sandboxed environment.

929.
Potentially one of the most transformative innovations in the Domino landscape in the past couple of years has been Nomad Web. For many customers, specifically being able to deploy without needing SafeLinx, has made the ease of deployment even more straight forward.

930.
931.
932.
933.
The best thing in general about this is that you can have the Notes client in a browser and it just works out of the box.

934.
935.
936.

937.

938.
939.
940.
One note I’ve come across on a couple of sites that isn’t necessarily intuitive (to the brain of Domino Admin anyway) is that the Nomad web server does not use connection documents to connect to other Domino servers for the Nomad Web service. It specifically uses the Fully qualified Internet host name in the Server document of the server it tries to connect to. This will work out of box on many sites. On some sites the Fully qualified Internet host name won’t necessarily be resolvable over internal DNS.

941.
942.
943.
944.
To detect when this has become an issue, (i.e. a users clicks on an icon on their workspace within their workspace for a server that Nomad Web cannot connect to) you will see something along the lines of this in the Domino console of the Domino server that Nomad Web server runs on:

945.
946.
947.
948.
Nomad: nwsp:wss:error Error: getaddrinfo ENOTFOUND
Nomad: at GetAddrInfoReqWrap.onlookup [as oncomplete] (node:dns:84:26)

949.
950.
951.
952.
You don’t necessarily need to change the Full qualified Internet host name of the server it’s connecting to to resolve the issue. You just need to make it resolvable from the Nomad Web host (i.e. you can use a hosts file on the Nomad Web server OS if you wish).

953.
954.
955.
956.
I’ve seen this on a couple of sites and thought it would be useful to share. Let us know if you found it useful.

1000.
1001.
1002.
As with Domino 12 early access, this is a 100% open early access program. Anyone with an entitlement can log in, download, install and provide feedback in the forum (Note if you already had Notes client access to the forum, you’ll be able to find the new forum easily and will have access).

1003.
1004.
1005.
1006.
The “what’s new” list is quite long (especially given it’s a first drop). Check out the list here.

1007.
1008.
1009.
1010.
Couple of things I’d highlight of interest – the new Admin Central App

1011.

1013.
1014.
You get notified of latest product versions. (overdue and is a precursor to subscribing to updates).

1015.
1016.
1017.
1018.
Domino wouldn’t be Domino without an absolute plethora of security updates.

1019.
1020.
1021.
1022.
Behind the scenes the core is updated and the Notes client is 64 bit only (Notes client information is here.) So it’s important to test third party integration as early as possible and give feedback.
