This is a true story. My discomfort with stray animals is well known. But a small change in attitude and perspective, opened up a another dimension in my life. I am truly grateful to all the wild and stray animals who inhabit earth and try to remind us daily, that life is short, enjoy it don't be attached to it and other material things.

This is the story of Brownie - An adorable, stray dog who adopted my family. Yes, she adopted us and we were and continue to be completely spellbound by her.

A couple of years ago, we moved to our present house due to my professional requirements. The house we moved into was small but cozy but the surrounding area was amazing. Next to the sea, landscaped gardens, hammocks under the trees, water fountains, duck ponds, a lovely walking track lined with colourful bougainvillea creepers - It was and is paradise. Where in the big, bad, congested city would you find such a haven of peace.

Coming back to Brownie- This new place had many stray dogs, which I found irritating, but somehow tolerated them. One night, after returning from a party, Brownie came and stood in front of us and looked at us very expectantly..wagging her tail. We stood there, looking at her for a few seconds, and were about to move on, when she did the most unexpected thing - she lay down folded her legs and exposed her tummy to us! looking at us with pleading eyes to pet her, rub her belly. I looked at her for a few seconds, thinking she would get up, but she continued to remain in that pose. So, I bent down and rubbed her belly and neck for a couple of minutes. As soon as I stopped, she got up and went away.

This became a regular occurrence. She would "waylay" me on way to work and be there when i returned. My kids were a little scared, but when they saw me, they too started to pet her. My wife joined in somewhere along the way and the conversion was complete. We now looked forward to petting her daily... :)

One fine day, after a month, as my wife opened our front door, she saw brownie standing in the corridor, looking at us, waiting for us. After the mandatory petting session, which we all referred to as the "Brownie Tax" , my wife gave her some biscuits and she just lapped it up.

Thereafter, it was a given. She had fixed meal timings. She would come for her morning breakfast, lunch and dinner. At first, we gave her our normal food, which she would lap up with reverence and devotion and look at us for more. But a few tips from other dog lovers had warned us about the dangers of overfeeding and sweet meats, so we used to refrain.

A month later, one fine morning as I opened the door to head out for a walk, Brownie lay sprawled across our door foot mat, in deep slumber. No amount of calling or pushing her made her budge. She had claimed the space as her own!!! I finally jumped over her and went out, thus setting the tradition for the next couple of years. She had achieved her aim. She was now our pet but with freedom to move around whenever she desired.

One day, she lay listless at our door. We were all worried as to what had happened to her. So we started looking around for a Vet. In the meanwhile, she vomited. Oooh.. this was not expected.!!! Simultaneously, a security guard came up (lets call him Bharat), and told us that she had eaten a dead fish, washed up along the shore, inspite of his efforts to stop her. This seemed to be regular occurrence. He told us not to worry and gave her a pill. We asked him about brownie and how he knew her so well. He told us his story:-

Brownie and her two siblings (all females), were born in 2010 in the same complex. After birth, the little puppies used to play around in a secluded spot. One day, a municipal van came to collect stray dogs. mother was picked up and the puppies got left behind as they were playing hide and seek else where. The guards and the caretaker found these puppies squealing for their mother and were hungry. Seeing the defenseless little creatures, they fed them from their own tiffin box. Thus started their saga. These puppies - Brownie, Cocktail and Blackie (all named by my wife and kids), became the guards pets. They took care of them as their own children and used to get food from their homes (milk, chapattis, rice , and meat on occasion). In the meanwhile, as they could not afford a vet, they came across a gentleman, who gave them the address of a young vet, who would come to tend to them and give them their mandatory shots, free of cost. In fact, he was on call and whenever anything happened to these three dogs, the guards would call him and he would come there to treat them, free of cost. And thus they grew up to be healthy (though skinny) dogs with pretty good manners. :)

We were the new entrants to the scene. Bharat, the guard, was quite perplexed when he observed Brownie was missing from her usual place and was not eating well for the last couple of months. So he followed her to find out where she was going. We were touched by his concern. He seemed a bit sad that she had found some one else , but also seemed happy to see her well fed.

Thus Brownie became our pet. She would accompany me when I went for a walk or jog, play with my daughters, watch them play basket ball and come and lie on her doormat. She figured out how to get our attention without barking (she would put her nose on the flap of the letter slot and knock). She would spend all her free time at the doorstep. In the morning she would go to meet bharat and her sisters and play with them It was such a sight to see these siblings play hide and seek!!! The basketball court was her territory and she guarded it fiercely. She still guards it fiercely.

And thus we settled into a comfortable relationship with her. She wouldn't come into the house. She would hang around her mat and after a meal go, burn it out, playing with her sisters and the guards come back and chill. The look on her face while she would look up imploringly at us to give her something to eat, was so heartbreaking. She loved Marie Biscuits and a packet a day was reserved for her.. By the way, her sisters Cocktail and Blackie also joined the party - Buy one get two free!!!

As Life is about change and Change is Life, all good things come to an end. We had to move from the apartment. While we were packing and moving, she hung around the house, her mat, looking at us with expectation and sadness, knowing that we were moving out. We contemplated many times to adopt her, take her with us, make her our pet, but there was only one thing that stopped us: The guards loved her and so did her sister Cocktail. Though she would have come with us gladly, we knew instinctively that she would miss her freedom, her sister and her original keepers - the guards. As we were not moving far away, we decided to leave to there and meet her on a regular basis. After we left, our neighbours told us that she would come up to the house and wait for us. Slowly, she realised that we had left and so she stopped her visits.

For the first few times, after we left, when we visited her, she would greet us with such happiness, that brought tears to our eyes. She would then, gently nudge us towards our old flat, trying to tell us that- this is our home, lets go there, what are we doing down here!!!. Over time that has stopped as she has realised that we no longer stay there.

However, everytime we visit her, we take her favourite treats for her and cocktail. She greets us with the same love and affection, everytime. She also takes us to her favourite bench along the walkway and demands the love and affection that is due to her. We give it gladly because we love her so much!!!

So dear Brownie, your presence in our life has added another dimension to it. Your selfless love and affection has taught us to love unconditionally. It has also taught us that you don't need money to make a difference in this world. The love the guards have for you, who feed you and bathe you, out of their meagre earnings have humbled us. Our children are no longer afraid of wild animals and have learned to love them. You have shown us that the door to happiness lies in front of us i.e. if we choose to open it. Love is all around us, we just need to demand it. We thank you with all our heart.

ON HAPPINESS....

What makes us happy?
Here is a list :-

A new shirt, dress or clothes in general.

A new Watch or jewelry, house, car, aeroplane

Meeting old friends

Promotions, p

Meeting parents

Eating good food, celebrating your birthday, anniversary etc..

A new phone, computer, tablet, tv...

Celebrating festivals

Charity

Falling in Love, one night stands,

Marriage, Kids

Travel

The list could go on and on, but I am hazarding a guess that the above list probably caters for about 99% of the reasons for feeling happy.

However, the question that lingers is "Why Doesn't Happiness Last"?

Its logical to assume that once you get anyone of the above things or reasons to be happy, you should continue to remain happy. I mean, that Rolex you just bought for $10000, its going to last a lifetime. Shouldn't that continue giving you happiness? Or that lovely necklace, that iPhone, dress.... Think about it, why doesn't happiness last, because the "thing" that gave you happiness is still there.

Similarly, with friends, spouses, kids, colleagues, lovers, happiness to see them, live with them, is there, but a strange feeling of discontent does creep in, that niggling feeling.....

Economists have coined a law for it "The law of diminishing returns". They have also got it pat down that "Value" of a thing is relative to its desirability among the masses. The iPhone is an Object of Desire but would it be, if millions had not bought it and random people would not have given you envious looks and admiring glances.

Can one be truly happy? Philosophers, spiritual leaders, religions - they all eschew the virtue of moderation and abstinence as a means of achieving lasting happiness. "Attachment is the root cause of all human suffering" quoted Gautam Buddh. But then how do you explain that euphoric feeling when you buy that "Rolex" you always coveted or that "Ferrari". Does it mean that once you acquire it, you should not care about whether it gets stolen, dented or spoilt? Or does it mean that in the pursuit of obtaining it, you make your life a living hell by working overtime to buy it , and only to discover a few months later, that something better has come out and this is no longer the rage, its not worth the effort?

One may be deeply religious and be one with god, but does that ensure happiness? Does it mean that those people are happier that the others? Could be.. but are they always happy?

Wikipedia has a very nice article on happiness and you should read it. But as always - without all the mumbo-jumbo and science behind all this - My take on Happiness.

Happiness is a state of mind. To be truly happy, you need to be happy every moment of your life. This means that everything that happens or whatever you do should make you happy, (in varying degrees at first), but happy nevertheless.

Your happiness should not be conditional - for eg. I shall be very happy if you do this or if I get that .... To be truly happy, you need to be selfless - i.e. you are happy that your friend bought a new car (not jealous!!) , that your parents did something they like but you don't. Similarly, even if your GF/BF/Friend/Wife/Kid did something that you may not approve off, be happy for them. Being sad and angry only makes you miserable.

Money doesn't buy everlasting happiness (momentary definitely!). The proper use of money shall enable you to achieve everlasting happiness,

Happiness is in the moment, because reality is momentary. What is now is past, and what the future holds, you don't know. So be happy in the moment, like a child, and you will experience ever Lasting happiness.

PS. In reality, this is tough, very tough. The way we humans are wired, the way society has evolved, they way happiness is projected.. years of programming need to be undone. Maybe on our death bed lasting happiness will be achieved- so what- better late than never- keep trying, its a liberating feeling.

<img src="valid-atom.png" Clean and efficient, does the job well!!!

The Insult - Baby, you smell/fart/look like a dork etc.. or have you looked at yourself. Very demeaning and makes you feel like shit!

The Ignore - The cowards way out - Stop returning calls, messages, avoid the person on the street...

The Proxy - Send a message through someone or a courier - We're done!

Friendly Goodbye's

Classic - Bye , see you/ya, catch you later - all ok.

Let's catch up sometime - How about never or if you call , shall consider! Of his/her breakup, in school, college, work, life... Breakups are never easy because the person who gets dumped is left with burning, lingering questions like - Whats wrong with me? What did I do wrong? Is he/she mad? Sometimes the truth is told and you slip deeper into depression or the truth is never told - some half truths like - its not your fault, its mine, I am just not ready for this relationship etc etc.

Truth be told, we all know when the end of a relationship is near. But we hide, we ignore, the signs that are telling us to get out while the going is good. We hold out for that miracle that will get us back together again, make our lives as exciting and fun when we first met. It's a classic Ostrich in the sand maneuver- the world sees it (the end), your friend's see it, the other half knows it but you still persevere. That hope without hope, clutching at straws, trying to remain afloat, when all is lost.

How is this related to your work or passion? Well, giving up and walking away is an art one has to learn. I'm not saying don't give it a shot, what I am saying is that if your head tells you to get out, then get out. Don't listen to that inner voice that tells you to stay and try to make it. Knowing that you have failed, and willing to accept it, with the knowledge that you gave it your best is also an art that one has to learn. Sometimes, somethings are just not worth fighting for. So you need to leave your ego aside and move on.....

Choose your battles carefully!!!!

Love is like a rising stock in the stock market. When there is a bull run, the value rises like crazy but your head tells you that this is short lived, not going to last, that there will be a dip. But what do we do? feel good with the virtual profit, make merry, thinking the good times will roll, but one day we are in for a rude shock- the stock has crashed and you are left holding toilet paper!!!!

However, all is not lost. If you choose your love well (is that really possible!!!), there is a possibility that it can withstand multiple crashes and still come out a winner. A lambi race ka ghoda/ghodi.

Remember, learning to walk away when the writing is on the wall, facing it bravely, even when your heart is crying with pain, and picking up the broken pieces before they have shattered into a million ones, is the true hallmark of a winner. The other is a devdas!!!!

THE MEANING OF LIFE

What a predictable pattern life weaves around us!! It never fails to amaze me. Let me put it in perspective :-

The Charmed Life

Children born under this tag have it made from the day they were conceived. The best gynaec, best foods, best care, regular check ups, Baby Showers, a customised room (Girly pink or Boy blue), the best gadgets to monitor the health, membership applications to the best clubs and schools, colleges (if you dont qualify for a good college, Dad shall give a generous endowment to get you in), a line of women/boys wanting to hook up, people sucking up to you, never having to hear the word "No", getting to see the world before you complete 21... and the list is endless. (Parties, balls, events, socials , hardly getting to see their parents and vice versa)
The flip side, what motivates this child? When nothing in life is a struggle, its easy to get into drugs for that high, into crime for that thrill, doing things just because they can and becoming jaded by the age of 21. Some of the smarter ones pick up a hobby/interest and become masters in it and survive the stereotype. I mean, if you dont have to struggle for anything in life, you have to create your own obstacles, your own excitement, your own set of woes or life will be one long equilibrium and make you live in a false sense of reality. Sentences like "You dont know what living hell my life is" are quite common.. :)

The Middle Class Life

Kids born into middle class families aspire to lead the The Charmed life. They grow up with about 20-60 % of the luxuries the rich kids grow up with. They seem to be more grounded. but most are amazingly insecure. They get many things (of lower quality) and therefore they have the fire to improve their lot to come up to the level of the richie rich. Most of these kids lead a very comfortable life, go to decent schools, have loving parents and friends and seem reasonably satisfied. They know that if they do the bare minimum, they can continue to do well and lead a nice middle class ordinary life. Ideally speaking, these kids have the most balanced lives and one would expect them to be balanced. Many are.. but like everything else, they too fall prey to drugs, drink and other vices

The Poor Life

These kids have it bad. They rarely get anything they want. Its mostly hand-me-downs, leftovers and a whole lot of insults and pity. They are looked down upon because they are poor. Yes, some kind souls who lead the above two lives take pity on them and try to help them, but by the time they grow up, they have become "Maximizers". They don't think long term (They cant afford to!!!), get what they can NOW, and basically live life in the moment because they don't have a choice. Many of them continue in their miserable existence, roughing it out but those who cant, turn to crime, drugs, drinks and what all!!

These patterns pretty much cover the entire gamut of humanity across continents. Yes there are exceptions to the rule and some of them breakout to do different things, but largely, we all follow the script. Deviations from the script are not welcome as they rock our comfort zone. If nothing bad happens, and the comfort zone goes on for a longish duration, we are again very unhappy. That is the predictable pattern of life. Just like leading a charmed life doesn't ensure happiness, leading a middle class or a poor one does not mean that you shall never experience happiness. It is all a state of mind!!!

We need to see life as it is. That the fundamental law of life is change. Ennui does not befit humanity. We have tried to make our lives predictable and safe, but our instincts make us change that to do dangerous things. For e.g. Skydiving. In the earlier days, humans had to save themselves from predators, so there used to be a thrill in life. You were always on the alert. Now a days, that threat has been diminished to a large extent, so people go and try out other dangerous stuff to give them that thrill.

So finally we come to the question that people have been asking since beginning of humanity - Why are we here? What is the meaning of our life? Why was I born? Where will all this take us? If we are all destined to die, then what is the point of it all. These are tough questions with no clear cut answers.

For some, the meaning of life is loving, caring, sharing their resources with others. For some its domination, for the others its enjoying all aspects of life without really worrying if others are having a good time. Everyone has a different reason to live. The moment we start thinking about "higher ideals", we feel lost and powerless. I mean, isn't it easier to say "I really don't care" what my life should mean. I am just living it and taking things as they come. Human beings need to do something to justify their existence, animals don't. They simply exist!

There is another issue. If every human being knows that he is going to die, then why are we born in the first place? God created this universe and everything in it. So if we were anyways going to die, why are we born in the first place. I mean, would you start an activity knowing that whatever you are going to do is going to be destroyed eventually! Some reasons are that we are born to :-

make a difference in someone's life,

To improve our world

To create bigger and better things

Is it true? Has my being born made life easier for someone? (human/animal). Have I really improved the world? Did the world need improving in the first place?? By creating bigger and better things have I achieved something or just justified my existence and ensured stroking my ego as I would be remembered for a long time to come (Taj Mahal, Pyramids etc).

Spiritualists say the meaning of life is to become one with god. Everyone gets a chance, through their actions and deeds, over lifetimes to achieve that. But again, who said that it was necessary to become one with god?
Or why is it necessary? These things are told to us because the truth is frightening. It is terrifying to be told that there is no reason for you to live. You just have to live or exist. Thats why so many deviations are built into our lives, so that we don't think about all this.

I feel the meaning of our life is to add balance to this universe. Creation and destruction are two sides of the same coin. We as humans are born to add instability into the universe, because , if there is no instability, the universe cannot grow or die. It shall remain in a state of equilibrium, which is boring. So enter human beings with their superior intellect. This so-called superior intellect ensures that we create imbalances, that forces the universe to respond to the change and in the process, create something new or destroy something. In fact, it is the imbalance that humans create, that allows the universe or nature to become stronger and survive. Its a different issue that changes like Global Warming, contributed to by Humans, shall in the long run prove detrimental to the survival of humans. It's just one way to keep us in check.

So, summing up, something evolved into humans or humans were created, as a result of Natures stabilisation process. We are now de-stabilising that system with our actions. The result of our actions shall annihilate us (If you think nature cares if we survive or die, then think again!!!). We are just pawns in the larger game, which can never end.

How to Make India Safer For Women - Affirmative Democratic Action

The past few weeks in India have been positively horrendous, especially for women. Not a single day goes by without a news channel reporting some atrocity being committed on women - Rape, Molestation, Harassment, Female infanticide.... . The list is too long for comfort and is a damming indication of the misogynist society that we live in,

The tipping point was reached when a 23 yr old lady was brutally raped and battered by six men in a moving bus. Massive protests have taken place and will continue to take place till the government does not dispense justice to the girls parents. There have been numerous proposals for change in laws dealing with Rape, Molestation, Sexual Harassment , with most of the proposals proposing severe punishment upto the Death Penalty. Many have cited the safety that women enjoy in the streets of Saudi/Dubai and have demanded that similar laws be enacted here. Basically, the public goaded by Police Inaction, Political Apathy and a general sense of "Kuch Nahi Ho sakta", have decided to take matters in their own hand and force the government and the police to take appropriate action.

These protests, I feel, tend to die a natural death, because most of us don't have the time and resources to maintain sustained pressure on the government or police. The politicians know that and so do the police and therefore, most of the times, they just weather the storm (The Anna Hazare-Lokpal bill is an excellent example). The only way, I feel positive changes can be made is by becoming a part of this very system and using the very laws that make us feel so helpless, to work for us by "Affirmative Action". Sitting by the wayside, protesting that something be done are effective only till a certain extent and rarely lead to lasting change. In some cases, the change itself is corrupted (Misuse of the dowry law by women has put women actually on the defensive). Therefore, balance in policy making and governance is the need of the hour and that would entail more women in the policy making process. Some of the steps that WOMEN can take to improve their visibility in the policy making process are:-

1. Vote for Women candidates

50% (or less) of Indian voters are women. Many women contest elections but never win because women don't vote for them!. The big political parties field very few women candidates and the independent women candidates, don't have a hope in hell to win. Even Women don't vote for them!!! Women argue that they are voting for the best candidate/party, but I guess the time has now come to become partial rather than impartial. Therefore, for all seats, if the women decide to vote for the woman candidate, It is but natural, that more women shall win and automatically representation of women in parliament shall increase. Women would not need to ask for reservation in politics and we may not need the Women's reservation bill.

2. Float a Political Party- Of Women, For Women and By Women.

How difficult is this? We have had women Prime Ministers, have Women Chief Ministers - So why Can't Women float their own Political Party and the Women of India support this party. I know, at the start, there may not be enough number of experienced women politicians, but give it time and I am sure, they can do the job entirely competently. Whether they turn out better or less corrupt than male politicians, only time will tell.

So, the above two steps will increase their representation, but what about society? Respect for women needs to be ingrained in men from birth. Some of the things can be done are:-

1. Mothers/Mother-in-Laws to sensitize their Male Children.

I feel Mothers have a very important role to play as they can influence their male children to be polite and teach respect to one and all, especially females right from childhood. This includes Mother-in-Laws especially, who are known to badger their Daughter-in-Law's for sons and kill them for dowry .Come on.. why should a woman mistreat a woman? She also has been in her place before...!!

2. Equal treatment to Male and Female children.
Mothers and fathers should not treat their male or female children differently. Equality in the family is the first step to equality in society.

Other things that can be done are:-

1. Increase the ratio of Women to Male Cops .The ratio should ideally be 50:50. Therefore, in every beat, there should be a Male-Female cop combo, so if cases of Rape/molestation etc are detected, hopefully, appropriate action would be taken immediately. For this to happen, women have to join the police and other forces in larger numbers.

2. Women should refuse to appear in media that exploits them.
( This does not apply to women to want to do it- they are free to do it, but if that feeling is from commercial considerations, then the flip side is the effect on men, which can be unpredictable. So every choice has a flipside and a consequence, which may or may not be pleasant. It does not absolve the perpetrator of the crime but one has no way of knowing what someone is going to do ...so its a risk).

I feel all women have a choice not to accede to the demands of producers and do stuff which objectifies them. If there is no supply, Obscenity shall reduce considerably and therefore media that arouses the baser instincts in males shall not be around to affect a large portion of the male populace. For e.g. The Item Number has become a "must-have" in most hindi movies. If all actresses refuse to do such numbers, automatically, the "Objectification" of women shall reduce as there is no woman who is willing to do such roles. Mother's should sensitise their sons on respecting women by not visiting prostitutes. No demand, no supply. Pure Economics. (Idealistic but I see no other way as all other approaches have failed).

6. Say NO to the Casting Couch and Promotions for Favours at the Workplace.

All women (easier said than done!) need to take a pledge that they would not submit to any form of sexual misconduct or suggestions that would help them to advance their career. Again, pure economics shall ensure the best person wins because there is no woman willing to compromise her way to the next promotion. So if supply is not there, automatically, over a period of time, such instances shall reduce and even be eliminated completely. This approach would fail even if one Woman breaks the code. Alternatively, woman entrepreneurs should give preference to women in jobs in their startups/businesses so that Women don't feel the need to succumb to such practices. They would need to carefully tread the line for equal opportunity lest they be targeted for discrimination.

I know that all the suggestions above mandate women to take action and many shall object to the same. They want society to change their behaviour and perception towards women. But how does that happen? Sitting around and waiting for the past 60 years has not led to much change in the Indian heartland. For lasting change, the issue has to be approached at multiple levels:-

a. Policy :- Policies favouring equal opportunities exist however, their implementation is flawed. If there is more representation of women in politics and the various National and State legislative machineries, no appreciable change in policy can take place. If more women are there in legislative positions, change will surely take place.

b. Implementation. Implementation of various policies can take place only if there are enough foot soldiers to carry out instructions in letter and spirit. More women joining the para-military and police forces will automatically ensure that (empathy towards one's species). The number of vacancies in these institutions can increase only through legislation and therefore the need for more women in Policy making positions.

c. Unity:- All Indian women must first unite and take steps that forces men to view them as professionals and not objects of desire or the weaker sex. Any deviation would again result in regression and a "Divide and Rule" policy being applied by males in power.

Though crime statistics show that crime in cities is on the rise, the amount of crime that takes place in the villages of India is far more than our cities. The real challenge is breaching the feudal mindset of Indians. Reservations and Caste Politics have ensured that the Dalits (Untouchables) in the villages, today have considerable power in politics. They are forcing changes that give them more opportunities (reservations, promotions) over the upper class. The upper class does not like this but as a self correcting system, this change is being driven by politics and the power of a persons vote. Women need to recognise that power they have and instead of agitating, become a part of the system and then start to change it.

If policy makers and the society at large are not doing enough to make this a safer and a more equal world for women, then the answer lies in using that very system to achieve your goals. The path is not easy, as things like floating a party, mobilising party workers, making fair legislation, implementing laws fairly (not targeting men for that will result in a backlash ) and in general grooming women not to fall prey to actions that objectify them, I feel in the next 10 yrs or so, visible and lasting changes shall take place and the world in general, shall be a safer place for women.

Therefore, the answer lies in taking up a more active role in changing our society. There are pitfalls, there will be aberrations and deviations but if one remains true to the cause, India and the world in general shall become a safer place for women. Do read an article "The Phoenix Shall rise" on the angst expressed by women

P.S. A word of caution. Women in power may not be much different than males and can be equally if not, more corrupt. There are enough examples.

DISCLAIMER:- This article solely gives suggestions on ways and means on how life can be made safer for women. It does not promote or profess any form of Civil Disobedience, Anarchism or

violence to achieve this. In fact, it only gives suggestions on achieving safety for women through legal and legislative means, within the scope of the law and constitution. The law of the land is supreme and so is the Constitution and nothing should be done to violate that. Only legal and legislative means should be adopted to introduce or modify laws.

The Power of Irrational Optimism - Caine's Arcade

At the start, here's wishing you all a Very Happy New (Gregorian) Year. My first post this year is on the power of Irrational Optimism. Many a times, in life, we are at the crossroad's, in our career, relationship and with ourselves (midlife crisis?), drifting along and not knowing what lies ahead. The fear of the unknown is what stops us, many times, from chasing our dreams. Whether by providence or the universe coming together to help you to achieve your dreams (The Secret - Rhonda Brynes), The first article I came across this year was of a 9 yr old entrepreneur called Caine Monroy, from East Los Angeles. Now, this event took place in early 2012 ( the late latif that I am, I came to know if it this year only!) and true to following the American Dream, Caine's website (http://www.cainesarcade.com) was setup to crowd source his college education and raise money for creative kids.

Caine Monroy, a 9 yr old boy, was given a set of cardboard boxes by his father, during his summer vacation, to do "something" with it. This little boy had an obsession with Arcade Games, so he spent his vacation time making an entire Arcade with games made from the Cardboard Boxes. He visualised the entire arcade, the games and prizes and also implemented the business model viz $1 for some 5 tries and $2 for a "FunPass" for one month. Incredible deal. See the video that captures his journey to stardom. Caine's story has some interesting takeaways that are worth mentioning and reiterating:-

1. Just Do It:- I know this is the Nike Logo but I love it. It epitomises action over endless analysis and planning. Though analysis and planning are important, many times we get caught in a trap of "Analysis Paralysis" wherein, a thousand demons and obstacles prevent us from doing what we want to. This little boy was given cardboard boxes and some other items and told to do whatever he wanted to. Instead of wailing and whining and just wasting time, he decided to do what he liked best - Play Arcade games, and Lo! behold, the Cardboard Arcade was born.

2. Unstructured Playtime. When I was a kid, there weren't too classes for dancing, singing etc, so my friends and I would make up stories, make makeshift castles, do role play (king, robbers, pirates, aliens) and pass out time. Though we did not realised it at that time, that time to ourselves, where we had to make up stuff to keep busy, was incredibly creative and forced us to use our brains. Caine, being lonely, and having not much to do (other than play video games), was forced to think beyond his brief to create his arcade. His dad never expected him to come up with something like that (He just wanted to keep his kid busy and out of his hair), was astonished at his son's achievement.

3. Optimism. Caine, with his entire Arcade and fantastic business model, did not get a single customer the entire summer. It was just chance that Nirvan, a film maker, dropped by for something and what he saw inspired him to make a movie on the little boy's journey. The sheer irrational optimism of Caine, forced the universe to take cognizance of his effort and sent Nirvan around to help him. What happened was just out of a fairytale. The movie went viral, a flash mob was organised to come and play games in his arcade and a website was setup to fund his college education- All at the age of NINE.

Lessons that one can learn are:-

1. Let kids be. Give them time from video games and classes. Let them get bored so that they are able to come up with a solution to relieve them of their boredom.

2. Never stop believing and hoping, because that the only thing you have - Hope. If you hit Rock Bottom, the only way is up and if you are at the Top, if you don't evolve, the only way is down.

3. Its never to early or late to start. Limits exist only in our mind.

By the way , Forbes has also come with an article why Caine Monroy will be a Billionaire in 30 Years.

Rashmi Bansal has also written a book on entrepreneurs of different types and her latest one on "A Poor Little Rich Slum" about entrepreneurs from Dharavi (Asia's largest Slum, maybe the worlds also) is also enlightening.

So, Summing up, Let 2013 be the year when you followed your dreams, what you love to do, rather than what you had to do. Make 2013 count in your calendar!!!

The Sum Total of Human Happiness

What a weird title!! If you feel so, believe me, I also feel it, but, that is what popped up into my head early morning today. What does it mean? You know..Sum- Total - a Tautology and Human Happiness.. !

What exactly constitutes happiness? and to what extent can we go to achieve it? Well, everything what humans have done so far, achieved so far, is to achieve this state of Happiness. So the question that naturally comes to mind is - Once we achieve this "Happiness" will we stop doing what we were doing and remain "Happy". Hardly!! I would think - Humans are not made for that!

Human beings are inherently un-happy when they are happy for a longish time. They feel dissatisfied, lost, unchallenged and whatever they did to achieve that "Happy State" is now relegated to the annals of history. I believe the day we feel Happy and contented, with wanting to achieve nothing else - that day is the Human race shall start its decline. The reason is simple - we need to keep thinking that there is something else that can make us happier than what we are presently and we need to achieve it.

The experts would have you believe that we are far happier than our ancestors - the cave men/women were. Why is that? Its because we live longer, healthier and in greater comfort (or atleast many do). Our lives are not in constant danger of attack by animals or left completely to the vagaries of nature. We have managed to control the effects these factors have on our survival. What, in effect, has been achieved is "A better survival rate" which has propelled the humans to increase their numbers to Six Billion People !!! But has this made us "Happier"?

Today, we hanker for happiness. We tell our kids - I shall be happy if you do this or just imagine How happy you will be if you to this.... and that.... and some more. So we keep slogging on, in search of that elusive Happy State that keeps showing us glimpses and then disappears, forcing us to work for it again. The employee working hard for promotion, the employer working hard to make more money, the student studying to get more marks, the salesman trying to sell one more item, the athlete trying to finish the race one second quicker.... we are consumed by these thoughts and all our efforts are towards achieving the Holy Grail of happiness.

Levels of happiness differ or have been made to differ, so that aspirations to achieve that one extra milestone shall always be there. I mean, if humans were happy with the animal cart - there would be no Bicycle, scooter, car, airplane etc. So If I owned an animal cart and so did my other neighbours, would I be happy for them? Chances are that I am un happy. If my neighbour has the same stuff as I have, whats the fun in that ?

The same applies to other possessions- There is always a better AC, Fridge, Car, Hotel, road, house, boat etc to aspire for. Our happiness does not stem from the fact that our peers have what we have, rather, its what I have and what he does not have, makes me happy!! Our level of happiness is relative to the other persons misery. The thought "I am atleast better off than that guy... look at his problems, he is sc*****, Thank god I'm OK , make us far happier, than " Wow, look at him/her, great car, house, wife etc", I too have all that but I am still not satisfied.

Can we stop feeling this way ? I don't think so. There is nothing that we can do about it- Its our natural instinct - The only people who are genuinely happy for you are your immediate family as what ever you do, it reflects on them too... :)

The concept of "Settling Down" is to achieve a steady state of Happiness. Get an education, Wife/GF/Husband, house, Kids, steady job/business- takes about 30 years, but yeah- one does get there and this steady state lasts for exactly maybe two months, after which boredom (read Un Happy) sets in and we start looking out for more. So thus follow movies, shopping, travelling, eating out, activities - in other words - Lifestyle. The bar for happiness keeps changing higher and higher ........

So summing it all up: The Sum Total of Human Happiness lies in being happy at this moment in what ever you do or achieve, because once achieved, the happiness derived from that achievement is a diminishing return. Children laugh a lot because they dont say that "I shall be happy when I achieve this or that" and then only shall I laugh. So, Be happy in the Moment , because that is the happiest you shall ever be.

That Sinking Feeling - The Demons Within

Have you ever experienced "that sinking feeling"?, where in you feel that something bad is about to happen and that there is nothing you can do to prevent it? Your mind plays tricks on you, ghastly scenarios that show you as a pauper, greviously injured or just wasting away at a hospital- cloud your mind. Your heart rate increases, your breathing is ragged, your eyes wander around aimlessly in panic and there is a feeling of total despair - There is no hope, there is nothing you can do- in short you're doomed!!!!!

Well, if you have, welcome to the legions of people who have and if you haven't , then its only a matter of time when it shall strike you. Sounds absolutely fatalistic, does it not? Well, the human mind is the ultimate reality that you shall encounter and believe me, the day it decides to take you on the trip mentioned above, you can only weather the storm and brave it out. The mind, brain, fantasy, reality - call it whatever you want to - the only truth is what it makes us believe. That truth is your truth. The reality may be different - like what is twilight to someone may be Dawn to another. If the majority of people call it Dawn, you accept and ignore the one that calls it twilight. This means what the majority wants, becomes the reality. If you want to protect your reality, then you need to start protecting what you feel makes it real. You need to have the force to ensure it by disposing off the disbelievers.

But what can you do about that feeling of total despair, hopelessness? The only way, my friend, is to weather it out. You need to accept the fact that the sinking feeling is due to many fears that exist in your mind manifesting themselves. Those very fears that lay deep within the dark recesses of your mind and work their way into your memories, just waiting to be triggered, could mean the difference between your life, sanity or death.

The mind is a strange and a wonderful thing. Can you control it? Well If you can, the sky is the limit for you, you can achieve anything. If you become a slave to your mind, then your life can be hell because you can't control what you feel or what you want to do. In brief - That sinking feeling shall be more of a regular occurrence and you shall be miserable through out your life. Your negative thoughts influence the atmosphere around you and, in general, misery shall prevail.

So what is the solution? Its quite simple really. You need to confront your fears - What is it that is troubling you? Be honest and the answer shall surprise and liberate you at the same time.

Once you've confronted your fears, you need ask your self "What is the worst that can happen"? Once you have got that answer(and it wont be something that you like!!) You need to find solutions to it. Dont try to go at it alone, Ask your friends, family, relatives... even your boss. You shall find people are only too glad to help you. In fact, they love it!!! and most of the advice they give you shall be reasonably sound.. :)

The takeaway from this post is simple - There is no where to run, no where to hide-especially when it concerns your mind. You need to buckle down, face the fact, accept the problem and then strangely enough- You shall be liberated from that sinking feeling. The demons shall no longer have a hold on you. You are free because you know what you want to do and what shall make you happy.. :)

Life of PI - Entertaining and Endearing

Life of PI - by Yann Martel is an old book (By old I mean 10 years at the least) - which won the Man Booker Prize. I remember reading it while on my way to Mumbai on Rajdhani express and was utterly fascinated and riveted by the book. So much so that, I did'nt even realise that the jouney was over and I was still in the train 10 mins after every one had disembarked ( I was alone in my coupe!!!!). Well, when the movie was announced, I dismissed it as one of those movies which cant be as good as the book... but when the movie was released, I was inexorably drawn to it and one fine WEEKDAY, I went to see it. The 3D version . And boy- was I glad!!!!

You can catch the story at this wikipedia page so It shall save me from making this a long and boring post. The movie begins with our protagonist - Piscine Molitor Patel (aptly played by Suraj Sharma) and Irrfan Khan exploring various religions, watched upon indulgently by his parents- Adil Hussain and Tabu. The screen play captures all the small nuances of the book in great detail and I was thrilled to see what I read coming to life on screen.

The shipwreck is captured beautifully in 3D and is one of the films highlights. The very picturisation of a zebra and orangutan swimming an climbing on to the life boat is a lovely scene. Pi's efforts to keep the hyena from attacking him are hilarious but not the killing of the Orangutan and Zebra by the Hyena. Richard Parker (the tiger) is a magnificent beast whose instinct to devour the dead animals and then turn his attention on Pi is captured with a realism that sends chills down your spine. But Pi epitomises the "Never Say Die" human spirit and works out a method to keep the tiger at bay and also keep himself alive.

The photography and visuals are stunning. One scene where the entire Pacific ocean is lit up at night with millions of blue Jelly fishes is a sight to behold. So is the depiction of the Carnivorous island with millions of Meerkats (which Richard Parker feasts on). The Sliver of hope on which a shipwrecked castaway lives on is beautifully captured by the director and his cinematography.
what also comes out is Pi's compassion for Richard Parker. Though he could've let him starve to death or even kill him, he keeps him alive.

The entire movie moves between flashback and reality, with Pi narrating the story to an author. All in all, watching the movie is a good way to spend about two hours + and be enthralled and entertained.

Rating - **** 1/2

SKYFALL - The Evolution of James Bond

The release of the 23rd film in the James Bond series is an indication of how wildly successful this Character is . Why do we love him so much? Is it because he is so good looking, a minimalist and absolutely ruthless at what he does (even love !!). Why is that women love this character and men want to be this character? In human cinematic history, this character has to be the most endearing one till date, cutting across countries, languages, cultures .... James Bond is a cult and I hope they make movies about his exploits till my physical presence on Mother Earth.

You would have guessed by now that I am a Fan- A Big one and Likely to remain one forever. This piece is inspired by Skyfall- the latest in the Bond saga featuring Daniel Craig at his vulnerable best.

So what did I like about Skyfall ?

It has all the shades of good, evil, indifference etc. It displays 'M' as a person who has the capability to take harsh decisions (even if it means the death of Bond)! Her fortitude in continuing while secretly grieving , over the death of her best agent. The underlying tension between Bond and 'M' displaying a Mother-Son relationship, with the orphaned Bond displaying undying faith in 'M' inspite of her seemingly impersonal and harsh Decision.

The role of the Bond Bimbo has been now diminished considerably and I would say, kept to the "Bare Essentials ". Both the bimbo's are pretty, have acted their part competently (except that I would have liked to get to know the Severine - (Bernice Marlohe playing the girl friend of Xavier Bardem- the villian) a little better. Her role was a bit wishy-washy but I am sure they director had his constraints. A "coloured" Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) is a departure from the earlier ones (she actually shoots Bond! and then Sleeps with him - Hell hath no fury.....).

The Plot is OK- A hard disk containing the identities of NATO Agents is stolen by Patrice - a mercenary hired by Raoul Silva (Xavier Bardem).Raoul was an Ex MI6 agent, who exceededhis brief and created problems for the MI6 with the Chinese. M traded him with the chinese for the release of 6 agents. Raoul survived the Chinese torture and then went on to become a Hacker for Hire. In the process, he made millions and then started a grand plan to kill M. The entire story is all about how he seems to have planned everything and how Bond outsmarts him by taking the fight to the place he grew up - SKYFALL.

What I did not Like
Everything is too pat in the movie. A cold Blooded Villian would kill his enemy and not hob nob with him or give him a gun!!! Normal police men dont stand a chance. The story is always about some list getting stolen and agents getting compromised and finally, the ease with which Bond can travel across countries... just doesnot fit. I would put it down to creative licence and the audience taking it for granted that "its always like this". I mean , how can one survive a 200 Ft fall in a river, get shot in the chest with depleted uranium shells and still survive..!!!!

Overall, I rate the movie extremely watchable for its Back to the Basics approach and M not apologising for decisions taken that could have led to his death.. Daniel Crag as usual is superb and has an animal magnetism to him, Xavier is excellent as the Pansy but cold blooded hacker who makes a move on Bond. The photgraphy is excellent, especially the turkish market chase and the drive to Skyfall... Over all, there are many changes and I would'nt like to spoil the surprise.. so go watch it.. !
Rating - ****
Oh.. and Adele's superb rendition of Skyfall... hear it !

THE IRON LADY - TRUTH IS HARD, SELLING IT EVEN HARDER

"Come on, lets go and see the Iron Lady", pleaded my wife.
"I really am not interested to watch Maggie dominate the screen the way she dominated England", I replied and went back to reading Superfreakonomics and the economics of prostitution..
Well, needless to say, you all know how that went...I was dragged to watch the movie anyway.. and I must admit (albeit reluctantly) how profundly the movie affected me.

No, this is not an other movie review, though I must admit the movie scores brilliantly on all aspects of movie making - taut screenplay, some fabulous acting by Meryl streep and riveting cinematography all make it a must watch, but the lessons in pyschology and politics that come across clearly are worth mentioning and emulating (maybe)..
The first - No one want to know the truth, least of all face it, if it involves hardship to oneself. Maggie knew what was good for Britain and what was required to be done to resolve the deep pit it found herself in, but the people revolted and she almost lost her job for implementing hard decisions.

Lesson learnt- In politics, hard decisions are hard on your career and may even end it.

The second - There is nothing like a War to divert people's mind off mundane things like unemployment and inflation. (Sounds familiar, isnt it...George Bush, afghanistan...)

When maggie found herself in a fix, the Argentinians came to her rescue and attacked Falklands. Her decision to war with Argentina united the British people and took their minds off the hard decisions and actually contributed to the growth of Britain).

The Third - Even if you know you are correct and the others are wrong, bull dozing your way through will go against you, however good your decisions may be for the general good.

Many times when we know we are correct and if things were done your way, the results would benefit everyone, we become all righteous and get passionate, drowning out views of other people and trying to get your way through. Remember, even if your are correct, you have to sell your ideas to the non believers because thrusting the same down their throat shall be counterproductive..no matter how high or powerful you are.

The Fourth - If you admonish in public, the affected person shall forever hold a grudge against you and will turn against you when you need them the most.

Hard truths are unpalatable because they require tough actions to remedy, which would lead to hardships. That is something no one likes, so you must sell your ideas, your views, with patience and understanding, learning to accept dissent, learning to agree to disagree and moving ahead, for every person wants to feel important, wants to be a part of the process, wants to be acknowledged. Sharing credit is the best way to ensure lasting prosperity for all... Thats why Thatcher was ousted by her own team ...she could've done much more and Britain would be very powerful today if she was at the helm..but history and maggie had other plans....

Give the Indian Cricket Team a Break !!!

The Indian cricket team has been pummelled in the past one year after winning the world cup. They lost badly in England and have now got completely out classed in Australia. The Indian Cricket team led by ther dashing captain Mahi - Mahender Singh Dhoni would do no wrong but then suddenly it seemed that the fight had gone out of them. England was a disaster and the same form has continued in Australia. The batting crumbled, the bowling got plastered , Dhoni's captaincy was terrible, in short..nothing went right. The media, critics and the fans had a field day panning them. To add to their woes, the players started to fight amongst themselves. Various reasons were attributed to the teams dismal performance:-
(a) Too much cricket (world cup followed by IPL )
(b) Lack of interest in ODI and test cricket (not as financially lucrative as IPL, so they want to save their bodies).
(c) Lack of form (Sehwag, Ishan, Pathan...)
(d) Factionalism
(e) Obsession with Sachin's 100th 100...
(f) Change of coach - Duncan Fletcher has a terrible record...

Well..the list is endless and some more can be added to the list !!! But, lets hold our horses for a moment and give the Indian team a break... I mean, when the Indian team beats Australia or England or whichever team at home, the fans go ballistic...and the team which has been plastered gets plastered by their media at home..Flat pitches not withstanding !!! They too start baying for the heads of their NPP (Non performing players). The Indian Media goes ga-ga on the Indian teams performance and ALL IZZ WELL. Fame is a Fickle mistress and the recent events have shown the stalwarts of the team that they too are not immune from a consistent bad patch.. But to be fair...we need to give our team a break and not badger them with negativity....

All said and done.. this bad patch is nothing new and was probably expected. People were tired of cricket and winning on the trot can become boring... so in that sense, this dimal performance by the team was expected and probably good also...as brought out in the article Winning and the Indian Cricket team
Bad performances like these are actually good - Non performing seniors can be junked, new players can be blooded and they get a chance too...and the team gets an infusion of energy..which can be so uplifting. Therefore,,cricket fans dont despair,,,its always darkest before dawn, and what goes up must come down. So I predict a reversal of fortunes for the Indian Team...the IPL shall be moderate this year with player revenues heading southwards..which shall give them a rude shock and therefore, hopefully force them to give their best for the Indian team...and we shall end 2012 on a high note..So like I said, stop worrying, no, obsessing about sachin's 100th ton, give the Indian team a break and let them regroup...

How to beat the Hum-Drum of Daily Existence

There are days when you cant just wait to get to office, try out that brilliant Idea that hit you while in the shower and prove to the world what a genius you are. On the other hand, there are days when all you want to do is stay at home, not even pick up a call and just be content to vegetate. How does one do something useful in office when your mood is the latter. Well...to cut a long story short --nothing!!!!
Why does it happen!!! Well...to simplify it--Either too much of the same thing (continuous excitement, Fire Fighting or long period of Inaction) can trigger it or the fact that you no longer enjoy the job or have learnt whatever you wanted. Its time to move on.
I guess there isnt a cure for it!!! In order to avoid it, therefore, you need to be like Richard Branson. Live on the Edge..seek thrills, do weird stuff...and if you are not upto it..vegetate in front of the TV!!!!
I have found a cure but it takes too much effort.. If you want to try it...go ahead..
Think of an Idea, anything ..it could be fishing, computers, skating etc. Then try to apply what you do at your present job to find something in common, Once you get that, try to change it to something exactly like your job. Thats it..simple right :) Not exactly...you shall realise what an effort it is to draw parallels between two completely different things. And what if this also does not work??? Well this calls for drastic steps...Just stop what you are doing and start doing a repetitive manual job that does not require any thinking to be done (like digging the flower bed or just sawing wood or doodling on a piece of paper). Take it from me people..you shall find new ways to look at your existing job..and escape the Humdrum and boredom of daily existence.

India vs New Zealand. Indian win 5-0. Way to go India!!

Daniel Vettori must be wondering what to do next? After the comprehensive thrashing by India in the recently concluded One Day Series against India, it was clear that the Indian ODI team is on a roll, on a path of revival led by the strong, silent, highly underrated and immensely talented Gary Kirsten. This team is high on Self Belief and Self confidence. What a difference a good coach can make? It finally boils down to leadership and I think Gary Kirsten is a born leader. Contrast Kirstens "let the results do the talking" approach vis a vis Chappell's brash "Change it all Approach" . Sometimes I wonder if Chappell's was purposely sent here by Cricket Australia to demolish the Indian team from within. A conspiracy theory, no doubt, but highly plausible. Indian's are not known for their unity- In fact they are known for factionalism, their Individualism and narrow minded approach. This was played to the hilt by Chappell who really demolished the fighting spirit built in the team by Saurav ganguly. Thankfully, good sense prevailed and Chappells contract was not renewed. Praise the selectors on selecting Kirsten as the coach. Just goes to prove the adage that a Great sportsman need not be a great leader too and vice versa.
The best part about this win was the hunger displayed by all the sidelined cricketers who were given a chance. It was a great decision to send the seniors to South Africa to practice and hone their skills against the short, fast deliveries that Morkel and Co have planned for them during India's forthcoming tour to South Africa. What this decision has done is built up enormous bench strength with Yousuf, Parthiv, Viraat etc going great guns and given India fantastic options for the forthcoming series and the Cricket World Cup.
As was brought out in an earlier article on why Indian's play they way they play (Winning and the Indian Cricket Team), I think the author would need to re-calibrate her reasoning. This ODI team is different. They are motivated from within to win. They are highly insecure about their place in the side and will go all out to show that given a chance- The Indian Team is second to none..Way to go India

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://adifferenttakeonelife.blogspot.com/2010/12/india-vs-new-zealand-indian-wind-5-0.html' title='India vs New Zealand. I do play a lot of games, but as far as a full days entertainment goes, nothing to beat cricket. It can be thrilling, throughout the match as you expect something to happen with every ball being bowled. The crazy run finish, trying to limit scoring, the alert fielding all add to the excitement. Needless to say, that I am a big fan of the Indian cricket team and go through despair when they perform the way they do, especially against "seemingly" weak teams like New Zealand. I dont care, I want our team to win at all cost as I am addicted to the feeling of well being that comes along with it. I could never figure out, why the Indian cricket teams performance was so inconsistent.

Recently I came across an article " http://hubpages.com/hub/Cricket-Winning-and-the-Indian-Cricket-Team" that got me thinking. I started analysing the teams performance and actually the article started making sense. After all, Its all about the money, honey and TRP's and pulling in the fans. Suddenly everything seemed to be clear..Well, atleast now I dont despair with every loss as I know that the team shall be back with a bang and I am quite hopeful that the team shall win the third test match against New Zealand.

Food Industry - The Culture of Waste

The global food processing industry is growing at an alarming rate. They are taking over farmlands and diverting the produce towards making processed foods like chips, ready to eat meals, Conrnflakes, Cold cuts, Curds, fruit juices and so on and on. The reason why this industry or sector of economy is growing is because our lifestyle has changed to such an extent that cooking food gives us the heebie - jeebie. We feel lazy after work to rustle up a couple of dishes and would prefer something ready to eat. And who would like to eat a proper, nutritious healthy meal when a meeting is in progress or when we are on the move. Why should we carry food on a journey...when there is so much available on the way? When I think of all this and I am not an economist by any stretch of imagination and do not have the figures at hand with me, but intuitively the following comes to mind immediately:-

1. What happens to the food products that are past their expiry life? Have we ever thought about that? Do they destroy it, reprocess it(if it is possible) . Do they ship it to poor countries, where any form of food is acceptable? Its criminal to see that amount of food going waste after all the effort put in to grow it (Fertilisers, seeds, transport etc). Even though refrigeration technologies try to keep it fresh,. food does not taste the same any more. A complete waste of resources. Does anyone have some figures in what percentage of processed food expires and goes waste and how many human being could be fed in lieu?

2. Intuitively, it seems that if large companies divert a large amount of grains and produce towards processing, then the available grain and produce in the market would reduce, leading to a demand supply mismatch, which leads to increased prices. Now, that is not good for the common man, who cannot buy the fancy processed foods.

3. Considering the fragility of food (Fresh food cannot sustain without help/refrigeration for more than a couple of days), the amount of chemicals that are being pumped into processed foods makes them downright un healthy for consumption. Processed foods available today have high salt, sugar etc which makes them a highly concentrated form of nutrition, which is hard to burn if we only undertake normal activities. A friend of mine recommended reading articles on processed food at www.michaelpollan.com. I havent yet seen it, but i bet that it shall bring out even more harmful effects of processed foods.

Effects on Humans

4. The amount of advertising this industry does to market its products to specifically target children in most products is not even funny. Our children growing up being poisoned by these products so that they lead un healthy lives and pay fat medical insurance premiums.

5. These foods are calorie-dense i.e. for an equivalent size and weight, as compared to natural foods, processed foods have a large number of calories. For e.g. 100 gms of potato wafers have almost 500 KCals (which btw takes upto an hour or more of fast paced walking to burn). Hoever, a 100 gms sized apple would give you only about 200 calories and is far more healthier..but would I eat an apple over potato chips??? Nah...Give me potato chips any day.

6. Processed foods are addictive and provide comfort in times of stress and depression. So we consume far more calories in smaller portions of processed foods which dont satiate us, which makes overeat and hey presto....a fat slob!!!!

What do we do !!!

There needs to be some sort of check on this industry. One solution could be that only a specific amount of grain/produce should be allowed to be processed so that more fresh food is available to people at reasonable rates, Or alternatively, the cost on these products needs to be so high so that it is not an option for most people to buy. I know many people say that almost 25 - 35 % of fresh fruits and vegetables are destroyed while transportation so , therefore in a way, the processed food industry is doing us a favour by ensuring efficient utilisation of these products....I really dont think so...!!!! We just need to improve the transportation and storage system...toreduce these losses.

This planet produces enough food for all people. Its just that the way society has evolved, that this food is not being evenly distributed for consumption. A lot of it goes waste, becomes rubbish and along with it wastes many more resources as garbage dumps build up, raising a stink and uses up precious space. Garbage disposal is becoming a huge problem which uses up more natural resources like oil and creates even more pollution. The problem is Water, the most precious of them all and it is not recoverable and we cant afford to waste even one drop.

It is high time that all persons start thinking long term and dont palm off responsibility. Reduce consumption of processed foods and we shall see that in a year or two, the entire system shall stabilise. Prices shall come down, wastage shall be less.

Now I dont have any figures for this, but again I intuitively believe this to be close to the truth. If this industry is allowed to prosper, we are looking at a Hungry planet in a few decades from now.

Turning the Tables on negative thoughts

As a child, I would fiercely compete to win...anything..a game of marbles, Cricket, quiz competitions..academics... In some, I was ruthless and no one could win against me..but some which required physical fitness, I would would fall short..(second, third..and in many cases somewhere at the bottom). After losing, I would then fiercely cheer for the person who beat me...as if his loss would some how assuage my defeat. This trend continued till I grew up.

One fine day, watching India play Australia in the world cup (Cricket), I was struck by a thought. If India loses this match, and If australia goes on to win the world cup, wouldnt India's defeat be justified, because they lost to the eventual champions. If a team which India defeated in the league matches went on the win the cup, it would mean, a team inferior to Indian won the tournament.Which is better..cheer for a team that beat your team to win the tournament or cheer for a team that is inferior to yours. I think..cheering for a team that beat your team is a more effective strategy as you shall be known as a team that lost to the eventual winners and not to the eventual losers.

Hmmm...this would mean that If I lost a game or a contract ...I should learn to accept that I lost to a superior adversary (what ever tactics were employed by him to win). I need not place him on a pedestal but figure out where I fell short and learn to innovate accordingly so that I dont loose in the future. Let me not spend time and effort in trying to hate him or plot his downfall. It serves no purpose other than hampering your chances of improving and moving on in life.

So many times, we are consumed by feelings of hate and revenge against someone. The only outcome of such feelings is a general increase your blood pressure and other associated diseases ( though in the end you may get him but at great personal cost). Is it worth it..no it isnt..Just get on with your life and see how you can make the best of opportunities that come your way...

Technorati -
<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> When I woke up, feeling all refreshed and sparky, I went for a nice stroll ( the morning being quite hectic). As it often happens, my best ideas come while I am taking a walk or a jog and communing with nature. It struck me, why do we all work with such passion and fervour to achieve a phenomenal rate of growth. What will we do once we achieve that rate ? Will we be satisfied or will we hunger for more? Just because a company has notched up a phenomenal rate of growth, does it mean thats the way to go. All of us in this world are working furiously to ensure the economy/country grows at a fantastic pace, but do we take a step back and see what damage this relentless pursuit of profit and growth is causing us?
We work for 10-12 hrs a day, six days a week. We neglect our family and our health . At the end of the day a major chunk of our earnings goes towards sustaining this maniacal devotion to work, this hunger for achievment. The problems faced by everyone are the same, rich or poor, developed country or developing country. Our craze for growth and profit has resulted in rapid consumption of Natural resources, inequitable distribution of wealth and period bouts of growth and recession. I mean, it does not take a rocket scientist or an economist to figure out this demand supply, boom-bust cycle.

Why cant we just decide enough is enough. Let us settle for a growth rate of say 2 %. Lets see what can happen:-
1. Consumption of natural resources shall reduce. May help in reducing global warming.
2. As companies do not aggressively pursue a high growth rate, every employee shall have more time( the afternoon siesta comes in here)
3. Assured job, with less stress would mean lower health problems..therefore probably happier people and families.
4. Population explosion shall probably reduce as parents shall have time for educating and teaching their children...

Well, naysayers shall say that what about getting infrastruture to the masses, inclusive growth and other issues...well I am sure like with any self correcting and organising system that too shall fall in place and may result in an happier world.

BTW, I would like to make it clear that I am not a communist nor a capitalist...I am an Inclusist..Figure out what that means..
Cheerio

If you would like to create a banner that links to this page (i.e. this validation result), do the following:

 1. Download the "valid Atom 1.0" banner.

 2. Upload the image to your own server. (This step is important. Please do not link directly to the image on this server.)

 3. Add this HTML to your page (change the image src attribute if necessary):

If you would like to create a text link instead, here is the URL you can use:
