89.
During his “60 Minutes” interview, President Donald Trump said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer would rather see the country fail than Republicans do well, complained about investigators searching through his wife’s closet, spoke in detail about ending wars and turned the tables on interviewer Norah O’Donnell to ask about safety in Washington, D.C.

90.
91.
92.
93.
None of that was seen by people who watched the CBS telecast Sunday night.

94.
95.
96.
97.
Less than half of O’Donnell’s interview, conducted Friday, actually made it onto the air. But CBS posted a transcript and video of the full 73-minute discussion online, so viewers could see for themselves what the president said that the network deemed worthy for inclusion in the 28-minute on-air segment.

98.
99.
100.
101.
That offered viewers a rare look inside the editing process at one of journalism’s best-known institutions, showing the dozens of decisions on clarity and newsworthiness that go into telling the story you see on television.

102.
103.
104.
105.
Beyond “60 Minutes,” the process is essentially the same throughout the world of journalism, from local newspapers to The New York Times, from specialty websites to The Associated Press. In short: Much like the old notion that everyone’s a critic, with this move everyone can be an editor.

106.
107.
108.
109.
A contrast to how ‘60 Minutes’ has worked throughout its history

110.
111.
112.
113.
Release of the Trump “outtakes” contrasted with CBS’ treatment of the “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris last fall. Trump sued CBS, claiming the interview with his Democratic opponent was deceptively edited, based on two different clips that were aired on the newsmagazine and “Face the Nation.”

114.
115.
116.
117.
CBS did not release a transcript of its Harris interview for four months, and not until the Trump-controlled Federal Communications Commission had applied public pressure. On a routine basis, “60 Minutes” — and most journalists — don’t release raw material in this way.

118.
119.
120.
121.
If CBS News is going to change its practices routinely in the future, one former “60 Minutes” producer said it should be up front with its viewers about it. Tom Bettag, who worked at the broadcast in the 1980s and is now a journalism professor at the University of Maryland, said it’s a product of the times in which we live, but there’s a downside to the practice of letting people in on the editing.

122.
123.
124.
125.
“I think there’s a very good reason not to allow people to do that, in order to avoid the arguments of ‘you should have done this’ or ‘you should have done that,’” Bettag said. “The assumption has been that your audience trusts you to use good judgment and to be fair.”

126.
127.
128.
129.
From the very start, the edited Trump interview showed a clear difference from the raw material. On the broadcast, O’Donnell’s interview began with discussion of the government shutdown. But when the two actually sat down, she started by asking the president about his just-concluded meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

130.
131.
132.
133.
That’s essentially a call journalists make every day in crafting reports: Pick material to emphasize that seems the most newsworthy, or of interest to the most people.

134.
135.
136.
137.
“The newsiest portions made the broadcast, which is why programs edit in the first place,” Brian Stelter wrote about the “60 Minutes” interview for CNN’s “Reliable Sources” newsletter.

138.
139.
140.
141.
The first words out of Trump’s mouth — “Democrats’ fault” — came before O’Donnell even completed her question. That clearly showed where Trump was going, and the broadcast interview reflected that. But it was edited several times for length, to avoid tangents and the repetitiveness of partisan attacks.

142.
143.
144.
145.
Of Schumer, Trump said, “He would rather see the country fail than have Trump and the Republicans do well” — a comment left out of the broadcast.

146.
147.
148.
149.
On cutting room floor: Trump says O’Donnell ‘should be ashamed’

150.
151.
152.
153.
Trump also told O’Donnell that she “should be ashamed” to be asking him about political retribution. That was left off the broadcast. Trump’s complaints about New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI director James Comey were abbreviated — although his comment that James was a “terrible, dishonest person” was left in.

154.
155.
156.
157.
“I was struck by how much of what didn’t air from the interview were the parts that seemed more rant-filled and often confusing,” wrote journalist Rick Ellis, who painstakingly compared transcripts of the full interview and what CBS broadcast for the website All Your Screens.

158.
159.
160.
161.
Trump brought up his predecessor, President Joe Biden, more than 40 times in the interview but only six instances made the broadcast, Ellis said. The headline for Ellis’ story read, “’60 Minutes’ Edits (Most of) the Crazy Out of Its Interview with Donald Trump.”

162.
163.
164.
165.
CBS edited a handful of fact-checks into the “60 Minutes” story, most notably adding a military official’s refutation of Trump’s claim that China and Russia were testing nuclear weapons. There were a handful of missed opportunities, such as Trump’s claim that he was able to beat all of the legal “nonsense that was thrown at me.”

166.
167.
168.
169.
CBS removed an exchange during a discussion of crime in cities in which Trump asked O’Donnell whether she felt safer in Washington, D.C., after the president ordered the National Guard to patrol there. Generally, journalists like to keep the focus off themselves.

170.
171.
172.
173.
“You see a difference?” Trump asked her.

174.
175.
176.
177.
Responded O’Donnell: “I think I’ve been working too hard. I haven’t been out and about that much.”

178.
179.
180.
181.
Related: Minnesota’s Lakeland PBS joins public media lawsuits over Trump funding cuts

182.
183.
184.
185.
“60 Minutes” pointed out that O’Donnell’s interview was conducted exactly a year after Trump filed his lawsuit regarding the Harris interview. But it left out of the broadcast Trump’s discussion about management changes at CBS’ parent company Paramount since the company agreed to pay him $16 million to settle the case.

186.
187.

232.
The mayoral race in Minneapolis remained up for grabs Tuesday night, as no candidate cleared the decisive 50% threshold to be declared the victor.

233.
234.
235.
236.
After tabulating voters’ top choices, Jacob Frey led the count with 42% of votes, followed by State Sen. Omar Fateh with 32%, Dwayne Davis with 14% and Jazz Hampton trailing with 10%.

237.
238.
239.
240.
In closely watched City Council elections, progressive council members appeared likely to hold their slim majority despite the shake-up of several seats. Frey-aligned Park Board member Elizabeth Shaffer defeated the more progressive Ward 7 City Council member Katie Cashman. And in the race to fill the Ward 5 vacancy left by progressive Jeremiah Ellison, moderate Pearll Warren ended Tuesday with 38% of the vote, followed by progressive Ethrophic Burnett at 28%. But in Ward 8, Soren Stevenson, endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, earned the seat left vacant by the more moderate Andrea Jenkins.

249.
As the initial results rolled in, cheers of “Jacob! Jacob! Jacob!” went up from the boisterous, standing-room crowd assembled at Jefe Urban Cocina in St. Anthony Main.

250.
251.
252.
253.
“This city showed up once again. … We got what appears to be near record turnout,” Frey told his supporters shortly before 10:30 p.m. “I’ll tell you what: It looks damn good for us. We are well in the lead.”

254.
255.
256.
257.
In unofficial results reported on the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office website as of 10 p.m. Tuesday, 145,451 Minneapolis voters cast ballots in the mayor’s race. One of 137 precincts had yet to be reported. The city’s previous turnout record was set in 2021, when 145,337 residents cast ballots and elected Frey to a second-term.

258.
259.
260.
261.
Frey’s enthusiasm aside, a ranked-choice tabulation looms with only 10 points separating him and Fateh, the leading member of a three-challenger slate organized around defeating the incumbent mayor.

269.
In conversations at Jefe, Frey supporters sounded cautiously optimistic.

270.
271.
272.
273.
“This is about where he wanted to be,” said Steve Cramer, who sat on the Minneapolis City Council from 1984-1993 and later served as CEO of the Minneapolis Downtown Council.

274.
275.
276.
277.
Cramer said that when the ranked-choice tabulation is done, the “slate” strategy may prove to have backfired. Some voters likely ranked Frey alongside one or more of the challengers, diluting the anti-Frey vote.

278.
279.
280.
281.
“Maybe the strategy was too cute by half,” Cramer said.

291.
292.
293.
“Please stay patient,” Fateh told a boisterous crowd of supporters, many of them young and many of them immigrants. “We stay proud because this campaign has already changed the conversation for what Minneapolis can be.”

301.
In 2017, mayoral candidates faced off in five rounds of vote counts before Frey reached 50% of the ranked-choice vote.

302.
303.
304.
305.
Despite Frey’s solid showing in the first round, groups supportive of the challengers’ slate said the results showed Minneapolis was ready to turn the page on a tense two years in city government.

306.
307.
308.
309.
“We believe the high turnout we’re seeing around the city can be attributed to voters who are demanding new leadership in the mayor’s office,” said Chelsea McFarren, chair of the progressive Minneapolis for the Many political action committee.

310.
311.
312.
313.
PACs aligned with Frey outraised Minneapolis for the Many and allied groups by more than two to one, yet failed to unseat leading council progressives like Robin Wonsley and Aisha Chughtai. In Ward 8, progressive Soren Stevenson handily defeated Josh Bassais to replace outgoing Jenkins, a Frey ally.

321.
Still, Cramer said an incrementally more moderate council would likely work better with Frey in his valedictory term — if they and the council’s remaining progressives can set aside their differences and find common ground. Frey-aligned Jamison Whiting, who won the Ward 11 seat vacated by Emily Koski, could act as an important “bridge vote,” he said.

322.
323.
324.
325.
“We have an incentive to get our act together. … The relative strength [of the progressives] is more balanced, but whether the council and mayor can overcome their divisions remains to be seen,” said Cramer, presuming a win for Frey.

338.
339.
340.
341.
In the ballroom at the Courtyard by Marriott, Fateh supporters danced to a raucous grab-bag of classic Afrobeat and 21st century pop songs, as well as the requisite “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince.

350.
351.
352.
353.
Abdel Hassan, who said he just returned from a visit to his native Somalia, said it would be important to have both a Somali and Muslim in a seat of power, and that Fateh’s young supporters could inspire a new generation of politically active Somalis.

354.
355.
356.
357.
Several attendees said they backed Fateh for his support of housing policies like rent control, but also because at least symbolically he represents a voice for Palestine. 363.
364.
365.
At Moxy hotel in Uptown, Jackson Hampton showed up to support Lydia Millard, who lost a hotly contested race against incumbent Aisha Chughtai, the progressive council vice president.

367.
368.
369.
“I don’t want to see anybody fail because that means the city’s failed,” Hampton said. Contemplating the possibility of a Millard loss, Hampton said he’d stay engaged “and make sure that Minneapolis has the best chance of success for the future.”

370.
371.
372.
373.
Millard’s campaign manager Nico Woods said the ideological diversity in the ward proved more challenging than during past campaigns he worked on. “You have some that [are] socialist, you have leftists, you have moderates. The majority are Democrats, but they just have different points of view about what they feel is important.”

374.

401.
St. Paul voters chose a new mayor Tuesday, handing state Rep. Kaohly Her a surprise win over her former boss, two-term Mayor Melvin Carter.

402.
403.
404.
405.
“My family came here as refugees. Never in their wildest dreams would I be standing here today accepting the position of mayor,” Her said in a statement.

406.
407.
408.
409.
In thanking Carter for his service, she noted that she had once worked as his policy director. “I started my political career working for him, and I will always be grateful for that opportunity.”

410.
411.
412.
413.
Her and Carter were locked in a tight race that featured three other candidates and centered on affordable housing and public safety in the capital city.

414.
415.
416.
417.
With all 86 precincts reporting, Carter had garnered 40.83% of the vote to 38.43% for Her, according to the Secretary of State’s Office, meaning the ranked-choice election would go to a second round of vote counting. Ramsey County elections officials confirmed Her’s win around midnight.

418.
419.
420.
421.
“We expected it to be close,” Carter told supporters before a winner had been declared at a watch party at The Black Hart of Saint Paul.

422.
423.
424.
425.
Her will be the first woman and the first person of Hmong heritage to serve as St. Paul mayor. The race also included Yan Chen, Adam Dullinger and Mike Hilborn.

426.
427.
428.
429.
Carter, who was elected in 2017 and again in 2021, ran on economic gains made under his leadership, including an increase in the city’s minimum wage to $15 and a guaranteed income pilot program that provides $500 monthly to low-income families.

430.
431.
432.
433.
But he acknowledged that the political winds were stirring. “We are in a moment of global change,” he told reporters before the election was decided, saying the last few years have brought tremendous challenges, including Trump administration threats to dispatch federal troops to Minneapolis and St. Paul, as it has done in other major cities.

444.
Her, who represents a St. Paul district in the Minnesota House, challenged the mayor’s vision for reviving a moribund post-COVID downtown and called for more pushback on Trump administration immigration policies, saying the city should require name badges and ban face coverings for federal law enforcement agents.

445.

447.
448.
“We are stronger when we work together,” she told supporters at her watch party at Sweeney’s Saloon. “We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I have a plan to move St. Paul forward.”

449.
450.
451.
452.
Earlier in the evening, supporters at Carter’s watch party were cautiously optimistic about the incumbent’s chances.

456.
Attorney Haley Taylor Schlitz lauded the mayor’s work in the community, saying “he cares about St. Paul.”

474.
475.
476.
“I fully anticipate Representative Her doing a fantastic job as our first female mayor of this city, as our first Hmong American mayor of this city and our next mayor of the city of St. Paul,” he said.

496.
Residents voted for an increase to the district’s general revenue by $1,073 per pupil for 10 years, beginning with taxes payable in 2026. The St. Paul Board of Education planned to canvass the election results on Nov. 11.

498.
499.
500.
The district has struggled with budget gaps and anticipated a $37 million deficit next year. Administrators said arts and music programs, as well as some extracurricular activities, were at risk without the increase in funds.

501.
502.
503.
504.
The issue worked its way into the mayoral race, with both Carter and Her expressing their support for the measure.

505.
506.
507.
508.
About two-thirds of the voters supported it, including Brian Martinson, a St. Paul planning commissioner who attended Carter’s watch party. “We need to invest more in our kids,” he said.

509.
510.
511.
512.
Voters also backed a measure to amend the city charter to allow for administrative citations for violations of city ordinances. That, too, passed with about two-thirds of the vote.

573.

575.
576.
People across the country, regardless of geography or political ideology, made their voics heard and blocked that attempt to sell off our national heritage. 577.
578.
579.
580.
This summer, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced plans to revoke the Roadless Area Conservation Rule. The name of the policy might not be familiar to you, but the results are. For more than two decades, it has protected nearly 60 million acres of our national forests from industrial development. That’s meant for more than 20 years, Americans have been able to hike, hunt, fish and camp in the heart of our public lands, often at no charge, free from the pollution, noise and disruption that comes from industrial development. If the Trump administration gets its way, that could all be lost.

585.
586.
587.
588.
Opponents of the Roadless Rule have suggested that this push to repeal is being done to respond to the wildfire crisis, but in reality, this “solution” could actually increase the threats presented by wildfires. New research shows that wildfires are four times more likely to start in areas developed with roads than in undeveloped, roadless forest tracks. Even the U.S. Forest Service’s own research has undercut the argument that repealing the Roadless Rule would have any positive effect on fire management. That could be especially consequential for Minnesota after wildfires in May 2025 burned more than 48,000 acres — nearly four times the annual average.

589.
590.
591.
592.
For Minnesota, privatizing vast swaths of national forests would have huge consequences. There are about 2.8 million acres of National Forest lands in the state, of which 62,000 are inventoried roadless areas in the Chippewa and Superior National Forests. Those roadless areas enable outdoor recreation, which supports hundreds of jobs and contributes more than $40 million in visitor spending to local economies annually from the Chippewa alone. Opening these places up to development would devastate this part of our economy.

593.
594.
595.
596.
And those negative effects wouldn’t be limited to Minnesota. The Tongass National Forest is America’s largest national forest, encompassing the majority of the southeast Alaska panhandle. Over 9 million acres of ancient old-growth forest is protected by the Roadless Rule and would be put at risk if it is rescinded.

597.
598.
599.
600.
In addition to harboring great natural beauty and iconic wildlife, scientists believe that retaining the intact roadless areas of the Tongass is a “key element” in sustaining robust salmon runs, and they can also be key to securing a stable climate for our future. Vastly expanding industrial activities in national forests across the country would destroy invaluable recreation areas, fragment and demolish wildlife habitat, and threaten drinking water sources. It could even worsen climate change.

601.
602.
603.
604.
Related: Why the federal government is making climate data disappear

605.
606.
607.
608.
Despite what opponents of wild public lands might argue, repealing the Roadless Rule is an economic loser with real world consequences for average Americans. The Forest Service cited economic commonsense as one of the primary justifications for creating the rule. However, building and maintaining roads has significant costs even in the easiest terrain. Building more roads would exact even greater costs on local communities that face harm from negative impacts to their drinking water, outdoor economies and property values.

609.
610.
611.
612.
A lot of things have changed over the last quarter-century, but two things remain steady: the importance of preserving public lands, and public support for the Roadless Rule. In 2001, more than 600 public hearings were held nationwide over 18 months, and 1.6 million Americans weighed in to call for protection of these forestlands.

613.
614.
615.
616.
This summer, millions made their voices heard, and the effort to sell off our natural heritage outright was squashed for now. Now, the administration is taking a new angle and coming after our national forests. We need those same millions — hunters, anglers, hikers, family vacationers and the public at large — to demand better for our public lands.

768.
NEW YORK (AP) — Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old state lawmaker, who was set to become the city’s most liberal mayor in generations.

769.
770.
771.
772.
In a victory for the Democratic party’s progressive wing, Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani must now navigate the unending demands of America’s biggest city and deliver on ambitious — skeptics say unrealistic — campaign promises.

773.
774.
775.
776.
With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1.

777.
778.
779.
780.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said on X that she looked forward to working with Mamdani “to make our city more affordable and livable” and congratulated him on winning “one of the city’s highest-turnout elections on record.”

781.
782.
783.
784.
More than 2 million New Yorkers cast ballots in the contest, the largest turnout in a mayoral race in more than 50 years, according to the city’s Board of Elections.

785.
786.
787.
788.
Mamdani’s unlikely rise gives credence to Democrats who have urged the party to embrace more progressive, left-wing candidates instead of rallying behind centrists in hopes of winning back swing voters who have abandoned the party.

789.
790.
791.
792.
He has already faced scrutiny from national Republicans, including President Donald Trump, who have eagerly cast him as a threat and the face of what they say is a more radical Democratic Party. Trump has repeatedly threatened to cut federal funding to the city — and even take it over — if Mamdani won.

793.
794.
795.
796.
At his victory party in Brooklyn, Mamdani supporters cheered and embraced, some tearfully, after The Associated Press called the race. Campaign posters flew through the air, as one person hoisted the official flag of New York City and Bad Bunny played from the speakers.

797.
798.
799.
800.
Mamdani’s X account posted a video of a subway train pulling up to City Hall station, with an announcement that said, “The next and last stop is City Hall.”

801.
802.
803.
804.
Meanwhile, at Cuomo’s watch party at a Manhattan theater, the mood was far more muted. The crowd, which had once been standing-room only, thinned out, leaving plenty of open seats.

805.
806.
807.
808.
Mamdani’s grassroots campaign centered on affordability, and his charisma spoiled Cuomo’s attempted political comeback. The former governor, who resigned four years ago following allegations of sexual harassment that he continues to deny, was dogged by his past throughout the race and was criticized for running a negative campaign.

809.
810.
811.
812.
There’s also the question of how Mamdani will deal with Trump, who not only threatened retribution against the city, but also suggested he might try to arrest and deport Mamdani if he won. Mamdani was born in Uganda, where he spent his early childhood, but was raised in New York City and became a U.S. citizen in 2018.

813.
814.
815.
816.
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of Mamdani’s most prominent backers, said New Yorkers would fight back.

817.
818.
819.
820.
“We’re going to stand up to bullies and thugs in the White House,” she told reporters.

821.
822.
823.
824.
Mamdani will pursue an ambitious agenda

825.
826.
827.
828.
Mamdani, who was criticized throughout the campaign for his thin resume, will now have to begin staffing his incoming administration before taking office next year and game out how he plans to accomplish the ambitious but polarizing agenda that drove him to victory.

829.
830.
831.
832.
Among the campaign’s promises are free child care, free city bus service, city-run grocery stores and a new Department of Community Safety that would send mental health care workers to handle certain emergency calls rather than police officers. It is unclear how Mamdani will pay for such initiatives, given Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul’s steadfast opposition to his calls to raise taxes on wealthy people.

833.
834.
835.
836.
His decisions around the leadership of the New York Police Department will also be closely watched. Mamdani was a fierce critic of the department in 2020, calling for “this rogue agency” to be defunded and slamming it as “racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety.” He has since apologized for those comments and has said he will ask the current NYPD commissioner to stay on the job.

837.
838.
839.
840.
Mamdani’s campaign was driven by his optimistic view of the city and his promises to improve the quality of life for its middle and lower classes.

841.

844.
But Cuomo, Sliwa and other critics assailed him over his vehement criticism of Israel ’s military actions in Gaza. Mamdani, a longtime advocate of Palestinian rights, has accused Israel of committing genocide and said he would honor an arrest warrant the International Criminal Court issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

845.
846.
847.
848.
Mamdani “is now the face of the Democratic Party,” New York GOP Chair Ed Cox said in a statement.

851.
852.
Mamdani won over the city while Cuomo faltered

853.
854.
855.
856.
Mamdani began his campaign as a relatively obscure state lawmaker, little known even within New York City.

857.
858.
859.
860.
Going into the Democratic primary, Cuomo was the presumed favorite, with near-universal name recognition and deep political connections. Cuomo’s chances were buoyed further when incumbent Mayor Eric Adams bowed out of the primary while dealing with the fallout of his now-dismissed federal corruption case.

861.
862.
863.
864.
But as the race progressed, Mamdani’s natural charm, catchy social media videos and populist economic platform energized voters in the notoriously expensive city. He also began drawing outside attention as his name ID grew.

865.
866.
867.
868.
Mamdani ultimately trounced Cuomo in the primary by about 13 points.

869.
870.
871.
872.
The former governor relaunched his campaign as an independent candidate for the general election, vowing to hit the streets with a more energetic approach. However, much of his campaign continued to focus on attacking opponents. In the race’s final stretch, he claimed Mamdani’s election would make Jews feel unsafe.

873.
874.
875.
876.
Meanwhile, supporters packed Mamdani’s rallies, and he held whimsical events, including a scavenger hunt and a community soccer tournament.

877.
878.
879.
880.
Cuomo also juxtaposed his deep experience in government with Mamdani’s less than five years in the state Legislature. But the former governor also faced his own political baggage, as his opponents dredged up the sexual harassment allegations that led to his resignation, as well as his decisions during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

881.
882.
883.
884.
Sliwa, the creator of the Guardian Angels crime patrol group, also had his moments — mostly in the form of funny quips on the debate stage — but had difficulty gaining traction as a Republican in an overwhelmingly Democratic city.

885.
886.
887.
888.
He conceded the race about a half hour after the polls closed, telling supporters: “We have a mayor-elect. Obviously I wish him good luck because if he does well, we do well.”

915.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Derek Shelton spent the first couple of weeks after his firing by the Pittsburgh Pirates in his feelings, bitter about the dismissal just 38 games into his sixth season as manager and defiant about his ability to do the job well.

916.
917.
918.
919.
That sudden free time turned out to be an unexpected gift. As he candidly assessed in conversation with several confidants the approach he used, the adjustments he made and the lessons he learned, Shelton took the notes that helped him land in Minnesota — because the Twins took notice.

920.
921.
922.
923.
“I honestly believe the reflection period is probably the reason that I’m in this chair right now,” Shelton said on Tuesday after his introductory news conference at Target Field as Minnesota’s 15th manager. “I think if that happens to you at the end of the season, it’s really hard to turn that back around and be able to say, ‘I could have done this differently.’”

924.
925.
926.
927.
Related: Winning games won’t be enough: How the Twins and Derek Shelton can start to win back fans

928.
929.
930.
931.
Twins president Derek Falvey already knew Shelton well, from their overlap in Cleveland when Falvey first began his career and the two seasons in Minnesota when Shelton worked as the bench coach for two different managers — Paul Molitor in 2018 and Rocco Baldelli in 2019 — before getting his big break with Pittsburgh.

932.
933.
934.
935.
Falvey would call Shelton from time to time for an outside perspective while he was with Pirates, a relationship that unequivocally influenced the decision by the Twins.

936.
937.
938.
939.
“I think we were harder on him than maybe we were on other candidates,” Falvey said. “Shelty and I talked about some of the real challenges that he had in Pittsburgh, very specific challenges, whether those were with players or staff or with the front office or otherwise, which we all have. These aren’t easy jobs. They’re challenging, and you go through them and you learn a ton. I was able to actually hit him on some of those things and say, ‘How would you handle that differently? Because I know how you handled it then. I know what you were frustrated by.’ That helped us a ton to kind of understand that.”

940.
941.
942.
943.
Shelton, who went 306-440 with the Pirates, didn’t pull any punches from his side of the interview, either.

944.
945.
946.
947.
The Twins, who fired Baldelli with a 527-505 record after three AL Central titles in seven seasons but only one trip to the playoffs over his last five years, have cut costs since the 2023 team ended the club’s professional-sports-record 18-game postseason losing streak and won a series for the first time since 2002. Executive chair Joe Pohlad led an exploration of a sale of the franchise his grandfather bought in 1984, before the family recently opted to stay put and add yet-to-be-identified new investors to the ownership group to help pay down debt and reset the financial outlook.

948.
949.
950.
951.
While neither Falvey nor Shelton would reveal a specific payroll target for 2026, in part because of the fluidity of the offseason transaction period that is just starting, both of them gave strong hints that they won’t be asked to further pare down the roster and be forced to trade, say, one or both of their All-Star starting pitchers, Pablo López and Joe Ryan.

952.
953.
954.
955.
“When I sat down with Joe Pohlad, and I asked him the question, I said, ‘What’s on the table? What’s off the table?’ And his response to me was, ‘Ask me anything you want,’” Shelton said. “I got the answers that made me really want this job.”

956.
957.
958.
959.
When Shelton arrived with the Pirates, long one of the lowest-spending clubs in Major League Baseball while playing in one of its smallest markets, they were in clear starting-over mode. The Twins, despite their 10-player sell-off leading up to the trade deadline this past season, don’t consider themselves to be in that same category.

960.
961.
962.
963.
“My goal this offseason is not to take away from this team,” Falvey said. “We’re going to have to evaluate every opportunity that comes our way. There’s going to be a lot of calls on players on our team because we think we have some talented players. I have little doubt that will be part of our process. At the same time, my personal goal is to find ways to augment and add around it.”
