49. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Students from the DLSU Gokongwei College of Engineering clinched top honors across four major competitions at the 86th PIChE Student Congress held last September 9 at the University of Mindanao–Matina Campus.</span></p>
50. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Echoing the theme “Innovate, Collaborate, Transform: Chemical Engineering for Sustainable Progress,” the event brought together industry leaders, professionals, and aspiring engineers from across the Philippines. </span></p>
51. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The team of Alijaeh Joshua Go, Aliyah Geri Romulo, Sophia June Ng, and Jan Joshua Cruz bagged the top spot in the National Quiz Bowl, where they showcased their command of chemical engineering principles as well as analytical thinking and teamwork. Dr. Angelo Earvin Sy Choi (main coach), Dr. John Frederick Tapia, Dr. Joseph Ortenero, Engr. Christian Jay Balboa, and Engr. Cary Albert Chan served as their mentors.</span></p>
52. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meanwhile, the research project,  “Production of Polylactic Acid from Sugarcane Bagasse,” which aims to create a plant designed to meet the growing demand of sustainable materials in the Philippines, earned first place in the Chemical Plant Design Contest as well as the Best Poster Award. The project team is composed of Samantha Nicole Escalante, Sofia Marrielle Jusay, Allan Miguel Abellanosa, and Gregory Grant Faelden, under the mentorship of Dr. Angelo Earvin Sy Choi and Dr. Cynthia F. Madrazo. </span></p>
53. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Anela Maree  Jardin brought home the championship title in the ChE MOB Competition, a fast-paced, multiple-choice trivia game that pitted undergraduate Chemical Engineering students against seasoned professionals. </span></p>
54. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the Chem-E Car Poster Competition, which made its debut at this year’s PIChE Student Congress, participants were challenged  to conceptualize a shoebox-sized car powered by a chemical energy source. </span></p>
55. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Winning the third place was the team behind DLSU’s “Iron Giant”, composed of students Ralph Emmanuel Manlulu, Nicholas Winfred Natividad, Sophia June Ng and Gamille Marie Silva, together with their mentor, Dr. Angelo Earvin Sy Choi.  The Iron Giant is a model car powered by the oxidation of iron and the evaporation of liquid nitrogen, offering an alternative engine to regular combustion to prevent the release of greenhouse gases. </span></p>

His career trajectory began with a deliberate choice in his studies early on in De La Salle University. He sought out its academic stature and value-driven culture. “I vividly recall writing in my undergraduate application that I aspired to be trained by the country’s finest faculty,” he shared, finding the anchor for his ambition at DLSU.</span></p>

132. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The scholarly groundwork laid during his undergraduate years truly flourished in graduate school. As a St. La Salle Scholar, James pursued an MS in Entrepreneurship while starting out teaching for the night classes at De La Salle &#8211; College of Saint Benilde which he thought of as a way of giving back to the Lasallian community. He thought that the program would further sharpen his entrepreneurship and business development skills. Concurrently, he was elected and served as the Graduate Student Council President (2018–2019), where he championed initiatives that unified the student body. &#8220;We organized inter-school competitions, quiz bees, and community masses. We were very happy that our events were always jam-packed,” he recalled, demonstrating an early ability to blend academic life with community building.</span></p>

In his pursuit of lifelong learning and furthering his knowledge in Technology, AI and Sustainability, he graduated with distinction for the Master in Innovation and Business and also attended a Master in Business Administration from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on a merit scholarship.</span></p>

Guided by the Academic Support for Instructional Services and Technology (ASIST) Office, hybrid learning is anchored on </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">AnimoSpace</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, DLSU’s official learning management system. ASIST describes </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">AnimoSpace</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> as the university’s digital learning environment designed to enhance teaching and learning through technology-enabled instruction and collaboration. This positions hybrid learning not only as a mode of delivery but also as an innovation that connects pedagogy with technological advancement.</span></p>

273. <h2><b>Laying the Groundwork for Digital Integration </b></h2>
274. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since adopting Canvas in 2018, DLSU has established a solid foundation for a more organized and reliable digital learning experience. Having one platform made it easier for faculty to manage courses, for students to access materials, and for both to stay connected in one learning space. This early move toward digital integration helped the university simplify processes, ensure consistency across classes, and increase the community&#8217;s confidence in online instruction. When the shift to flexible learning became necessary, DLSU was well-prepared; its systems, people, and practices were already equipped to continue teaching and learning, even in the face of uncertainty.</span></p>
275. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Within this system, DLSU practices two types of hybrid learning: rotational hybrid and concurrent hybrid, also known as HyFlex. In rotational hybrid classes, students alternate between online and onsite participation. In concurrent hybrid or HyFlex classes, students have the option to attend either in person or virtually. This approach allows both synchronous and asynchronous engagement, enabling faculty and students to adapt to diverse learning preferences, schedules, and contexts.</span></p>

Students value its flexibility, which allows them to balance academics, personal responsibilities, and commuting time. Many also point out that the modality encourages independence, self-discipline, and digital literacy, which are essential skills nowadays in tech-driven environments.</span></p>

Common concerns include unstable internet connectivity, heavy workloads, and scheduling difficulties. In response, DLSU has enhanced digital access by providing multiple options for attending classes and promoting offline content in </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">AnimoSpace</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, enabling students to study even without an internet connection.</span></p>

To address these needs, the ASIST Office continues to provide training programs that enhance digital, technical, and pedagogical competencies, helping educators create engaging and effective hybrid learning environments.</span></p>

376. <p>In general, the amount due to each recipient of the incentive is the listed value divided by the number of coauthors. The following additional provisions will also apply:</p>

378. <li>DLSU students who are not DLSU faculty members can be excluded from the author headcount used as the divisor; however, these students will not be allowed to avail of their share of the incentive if they eventually become DLSU faculty members.</li>
379. <li>For papers in the first three categories (Q1 or higher), coauthors based in foreign institutions can be excluded from the author headcount used as the divisor, provided that the first or corresponding author is from DLSU.</li>
380. <li>Faculty members are eligible to receive a P50,000 incentive for their first Scopus-indexed publication under DLSU affiliation, or their first after a lull of 10 years or more, regardless of quartile. This incentive is over and above the regular incentive that may also be due.</li>
381. <li>Faculty members are also eligible to receive a P100,000 incentive for their first publication in a journal rated as Q1 or above (or in Q1-equivalent computer science conference proceedings). This incentive is over and above all other incentives that may also be due.</li>
382. <li>A faculty member must list his/her affiliation as DLSU to be eligible for any of these incentives. In case the applicant lists multiple local HEIs as his/her affiliation, the incentive due will be divided by the number of such institutional affiliations</li>

457. <p>De La Salle University formally opened the DLSU Innovation Hub as a Knowledge, Innovation, Science and Technology (KIST) Park on its Laguna Campus today, October 8.</p>
458. <p>Held at the Enrique K. Razon. Jr. Hall, the inauguration was attended by top University administrators, industry representatives, and key government officials.</p>
459. <p>The event commenced with a Thanksgiving Mass followed by the opening remarks of DLSU President Br. Bernard Oca FSC and keynote address of Department of Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr.</p>
460. <p>Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA)  Management Information System and Corporate Planning Group Manager Rowena Naguit gave a message on behalf of PEZA Director General Tereso O. Panga while DLSU Laguna Campus Vice President Dr. Jonathan Dungca delivered the closing remarks.</p>
461. <p>Malacañan Palace officially designated DLSU Laguna Campus as KIST Ecozone via Proclamation No. 985 on July 30, 2025. It is the first Philippine private HEI to receive such recognition.</p>
462. <p>A KIST park is a specific type of ecozone created by PEZA. DLSU’s KIST Ecozone is a dynamic space for fostering knowledge exchange, innovation, and technological advancements aimed at sustainability.</p>
463. <p>Covering five hectares of the 51-hectare Laguna Campus, the DLSU Innovation Hub integrates academia, industry, government, and community in driving interdisciplinary research, innovation, and commercialization of green technologies, eco-friendly solutions and sustainable practices.</p>

498. <p dir="auto">De La Salle University Chemical Engineering Professor Dr. Joey Ocon was selected as one of the recipients of the 2026 Yale Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship, which will be hosted by Yale University’s International Leadership Center at the Jackson School of Global Affairs.</p>
499. <p>He is the first Filipino to be selected for the fellowship, representing perspectives from the Philippines and the rest of Southeast Asia.</p>
500. <p dir="auto">The Fellowship is a five-month program that convenes 16 rising practitioners who were selected out of over four thousand applications from across the developing economies to strengthen leadership skills, deepen networks, and explore policy solutions with global leaders advancing climate and clean energy.</p>
501. <p>The Program will commence in February 2026 at the Yale campus in New Haven. The fellowship then continues with a series of remote learning sessions featuring top international experts on policy issues associated with climate change and the clean energy transition. It concludes in June with an in-person week in Paris, including dialogues with leading international energy and climate change experts.</p>

503. <p dir="auto">Ocon is a scientist, educator, entrepreneur, and sustainability practitioner bridging science, policy, and innovation to advance a just and regenerative energy future in Southeast Asia. As a researcher, he has over 150 international publications and 4000 citations.  He is also a Principal Strategist for Energy Transition (Southeast Asia) at the global sustainability organization Forum for the Future; Co-Founder, President, and CTO of Nascent Batteries, the ASEAN region’s first sodium-ion battery start-up; and a Co-Convenor of the independent think tank Center for Energy Research and Policy (CERP).</p>

531. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A group of RVRCOB students completed the “</span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Taya-Kilos</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">” or Commitment-Action phase of their Service-Learning (SL) engagement last August 2. </span></p>
532. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They engaged 50 participants from their partner community Pearl S. Buck Foundation Philippines (PSBFP) in Olongapo, Zambales.</span></p>
533. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Faculty member Angelique Blasa-Cheng guided the students as they conducted these projects for Corporate Social Responsibility and Governance, a foundational and SL course designed to equip students in planning and implementing socially responsible, business-oriented, and SDG-responsive projects. </span></p>
534. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first activity, “Project EVE: Empower, Value, Earth,” was aimed at empowering teenagers and parents by providing workshops on LinkedIn, fostering entrepreneurial skills, and promoting environmental awareness through a hands-on planting activity. Project EVE supports SDG 4, 8, and 13.</span></p>
535. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The second, “Project Sinag,” focused on holistic education for PSBFP students. The group facilitated vision board creation to encourage goal setting, conducted environmental workshops emphasizing waste segregation, recycling, and water conservation, and delivered practical business lessons on budgeting, pricing, and marketing for small enterprises. Project Sinag is aligned with SDG 4, 8, and 12.  </span></p>
536. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Through partnerships with non-government organizations and community-based organizations, students gain hands-on experience applying their knowledge to real-world challenges and driving positive change within communities.</span></p>

There are 44 Philippine-based researchers, and only 25 are affiliated with HEIs.</p>
