27.

Click here to read about media coverage and impact of this open letter. Dear Mr. Trump: At the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, students are taught to represent the highest levels of respect and integrity. We are taught to embrace humility and diversity. We can understand why, in seeking America’s highest office, you have used your degree from Wharton to promote and lend legitimacy to your candidacy. As a candidate for President, and now as the presumptive GOP nominee, you have been afforded a transformative opportunity to be a leader on national and international stages and to make the Wharton community even prouder of our school and values. However, we have been deeply disappointed in your candidacy. We, proud students, alumni, and faculty of Wharton, are outraged that an affiliation with our school is being used to legitimize prejudice and intolerance. Although we do not aim to make any political endorsements with this letter, we do express our unequivocal stance against the xenophobia, sexism, racism, and other forms of bigotry that you have actively and implicitly endorsed in your campaign. The Wharton community is a diverse community. We are immigrants and children of immigrants, people of color, Muslims, Jews, women, people living with or caring for those with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ community. In other words, we represent the groups that you have repeatedly denigrated, as well as their steadfast friends, family, and allies. We recognize that we are fortunate to be educated at Wharton, and we are committed to using our opportunity to make America and the world a better place — for everyone. We are dedicated to promoting inclusion not only because diversity and tolerance have been repeatedly proven to be valuable assets to any organization’s performance, but also because we believe in mutual respect and human dignity as deeply held values. Your insistence on exclusion and scapegoating would be bad for business and bad for the American economy. An intolerant America is a less productive, less innovative, and less competitive America. We, the undersigned Wharton students, alumni, and faculty, unequivocally reject the use of your education at Wharton as a platform for promoting prejudice and intolerance. Your discriminatory statements are incompatible with the values that we are taught and we teach at Wharton, and we express our unwavering commitment to an open and inclusive American society. This letter reflects the personal views of its signatories only and is not affiliated with the Wharton School. The Wharton School takes no political position and does not comment on its students, alumni, or faculty.

 36.

The Columbia MBA Program is carefully designed to instill both the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the fast-moving, competitive world of business. Many top managers credit the skills they acquired at Columbia Business School as the springboard to their successful careers. We look for intellectually driven people from diverse educational, economic, social, cultural, and geographic backgrounds. Our students share a record of achievement, demonstrated, strong leadership, and the ability to work in teams. The Admissions Committee seeks intellectually inquisitive applicants with superior academic credentials from their undergraduate and graduate programs. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Fluency in multiple languages is not required for admission but is increasingly desirable for the study and practice of global business. Over the past five years, competition for admission to Columbia Business School has continued to rise steadily. We typically receive and review 5, 500 to 7, 000 full-time MBA applications each year, and in recent cycles only 15 percent of applicants were admitted. View a class profile of the most recently admitted MBA students. We accept applications from candidates with a three-year undergraduate degree. Those applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Self-reported GMAT, GRE, and/or TOEFL scores must be submitted with the application by the deadline. Scores will be verified after admission to the program. Interviews are conducted by invitation only; they cannot be requested by applicants. Invitations may be extended at any point in the application review process. The Admissions Office will contact you if you are selected for an interview. In a given application season, the Admissions Office will begin reviewing January-entry applications and August-entry Early Decision applications once all required materials have been received. Our goal is either to invite for an interview or deny admission within six weeks of a completed application being received. Our goal for interviewed applicants is to render a final decision within two weeks of the interview report being completed. Please note that the Admissions Committee will first review all of the Early Decision and January intake applications before we review Regular Decision applications. Regular Decision applications will be held and read in the order they are received. We will begin reviewing these applications in November. As a matter of policy, Columbia Business School does not defer admitted students to a future term. We understand the enormous commitment of time and energy that goes into applying to business school, but unfortunately we're not able to offer individual feedback on denied applications. We're well aware of the significant investment applicants make while participating in our selection process, and we appreciate the effort of all our applicants. Accordingly, the Admissions Committee reviews each candidacy with great care and thoughtful consideration. The review process is extremely thorough, and all decisions are final. There is no process for appeal. Significant change in your responsibilities at work Improved standardized test scores Refinement of your career goals New recommendations New interests pursued outside of work Fee waivers are available to full-time students, active duty military personnel, and members of the Peace Corps, Teach for America, Teach for China, or Teach for India who are currently in service. Proof of current service is required. Applicants who qualify for a fee waiver should email a fee waiver request, as well as proof of service, to apply@gsb.columbia.edu and explain their need for a fee waiver in the optional essay. Please allow up to one week for an update to your online status confirming that your fee waiver has been approved. Columbia Business School does not accept transfer credits for MBA programs. Before each semester, exemption exams are offered, allowing students already well-versed in a particular subject area the opportunity to replace core courses with electives. Passing an exemption exam does not reduce the requirement that all students must complete 60 credits at Columbia Business School in order to graduate — it merely allows students to take additional elective courses. Students must complete a total of 60 credits in order to graduate with an MBA from Columbia Business School. Students typically enroll in 15 credits of coursework each semester for four semesters of study, though this distribution may vary. Full-term courses are worth 3 credits; half-term courses are worth 1.5 credits.

 45.

Most undergraduates typically work for at least two years before applying to an M.B.A. program. Many decide to apply only after knowing: That they had enough career experience and insight to set practical goals, and How their M.B.A. investment would pay off personally and professionally. Business schools do not favor one industry over another for work experience, so look for opportunities in an area that most interests you where you can demonstrate accomplishment and leadership in that field. HBS 2+2 HBS 2+2 is an “early admissions” program unique to the Harvard Business School. It allows you to apply as early as the summer you become a senior or on any of the other three application due dates during your senior year. If you are admitted, you are expected to work for two years prior to matriculation at HBS. Joint-degree programs A joint or dual degree program is a full-time M.B.A. program that is combined with another full-time graduate program of study, such as: law medicine healthcare administration engineering technology international studies public policy You must apply separately for each program. While both programs are usually at the same school, some cooperative relationships between schools do exist. The second program determines total program length, but joint degrees generally take three to four years to complete. Advantages Joint degree programs are most attractive to individuals who want to work at the intersection of both professions. For example, an aspiring healthcare entrepreneur may seek a joint degree for a career developing new healthcare resources or managing a healthcare organization. Students who want to make a career transition may like that the joint or dual degree option allows them to earn two degrees faster than if they pursued the degrees separately, because some courses will fulfill requirements in both programs. Limitations Joint degrees require an extensive absence from the job market—usually three or more years. Therefore, this may not be the best choice for those who plan to continue along a career path and need to maintain current job skills and professional knowledge. Prospective employers may not have a clear understanding of why you chose to pursue either or both disciplines. Timeline Most U.S. business schools have three rounds of admissions deadlines: fall (September/October) winter (January/February) spring (March/April) Check each school’s admissions schedule. When a deadline arrives, the admissions committee reviews all completed applications submitted before the deadline. All subsequent applications are held until the next deadline, or “round.” Some business schools operate on a “rolling” calendar, reviewing applications as they arrive and continuing to admit students until all spaces have been filled. Admissions Testing Most M.B.A. programs require at least one graduate admissions test score. Consult the individual school website for requirements. Many graduating seniors complete their graduate school admissions test during their senior year when they are most comfortable with testing and have the flexibility to adequately prepare. Most applicants prepare on their own using one of the test-preparation publications available at most bookstores or on the test website. Essays and Personal Statements Most business schools require one or more essays in their application. Essay prompts may include a range of subjects such as leadership, long-term career goals, professional accomplishments, and community engagement. When preparing your essays, make sure that together they tell one story. You, as the candidate, are the story. Your essays should reflect different aspects of your character, accomplishments and aspirations that will allow the admissions committee to know you better. Write to express, not impress. Admissions professionals can tell when you’re just writing what you think they want to read. If you have done your homework, you know why you want an M.B.A. degree and how that fits into your overall career game plan. What will you bring to the classroom? Being part of a business school community is a give-and-take proposition. It’s not only about what you can gain from business school, it’s also about what you’re willing to share. Candidates are often judged by what value they can bring to the classroom and the community experience as well as how well they match entrance requirements. Why this school? Much like applying for a job, know why you want to pursue an M.B.A. at a particular school or program. Show that you are familiar with the given school and why you are a good fit. Reality check: Is this the right time for you? You’re going to business school to advance your career, right? Your job success as an M.B.A. graduate may rely to a large extent on what you did beforehand. Find out what M.B.A. employers look for in candidates by talking to students, alumni, and the school’s career office. If you don't have enough experience right now to benefit fully from an M.B.A., further define your goals and apply later. Letters of Reference A recommendation letter needs to: Support how well you can manage the academic demands of the M.B.A. program and your potential to succeed in your chosen career. Validate or expand on your credentials, strengths, and aspirations. Help the admissions office to get an overall sense of you as a candidate.

 90.

The Dean’s House was part of the original campus design and made possible by the George F. Baker founding gift. The Dean’s House was designed by Coolidge Shepley Bulfinch and Abbott. Construction was completed in 1929, two years after the dedication of the first 12 HBS buildings and just two years before the death of George F. Baker, the prominent banker who funded the construction of Harvard Business School’s original campus. The brick, 10, 978-square-foot Georgian Revival-style building includes a gracious entry hall, study, living room, dining room, kitchen, and pantry on the main floor, with a circular staircase leading to a sitting room, bedrooms, and baths on the second and third floors. The surrounding garden was part of Frederick Law Olmsted’s original landscape design. At the time of its completion, the Dean’s House was on the outskirts of campus, far enough from Baker Library to allow room for future structures. HBS Deans lived at the house until 1980, when it came to be used primarily for social functions. Dean Nitin Nohria revived the in-residence tradition when he was named Dean in 2010. About the Donor Construction of a Dean’s House was important to George F. Baker (1840-1931), who believed that Dean Wallace B. Donham and his successors should live in close proximity to students and faculty. Although a Dean’s residence had been part of the original campus design, plans for its construction had been eliminated to reduce costs but reinstated at Baker’s insistence. A prominent financier, philanthropist, and president of the First National Bank of New York, Baker was an extraordinary business leader. At the age of 23, he invested $3, 000 to become an original shareholder in the First National Bank, where he worked as a teller. Just 14 years later, he became the bank’s president. Under his conservative management, the institution remained financially sound throughout the panics of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Baker’s business acumen extended to serving on the boards of more than 40 corporations, including several failing railroads that he bought and revitalized. He also had great success investing in the utilities, steel, and rubber industries. Although he famously kept a low profile, leaders of business and government consistently sought and received his advice. Baker appreciated the impact of unsteady economic times, and his 1924 gift to the School was understood to be an endorsement of the need for professional management education. When Harvard Overseer Bishop William Lawrence approached him for a $1 million donation to help build the new campus, Baker refused. After consulting with his son, Harvard College graduate George F. Baker Jr., the elder Baker told Lawrence he preferred to contribute $5 million “for the privilege of building the whole school.”

After all, the world is becoming smaller each day, opening a number of new doors for global business opportunities. Choosing to study International Business is a great start to making the process of studying inside the United States happen, but next you will need to search for and find a college or university in which you would like to receive your degree. One school that stands out as a leader in business schools is Hult International Business School.
