63.

From the seniors who he has connected with and watched grow for years, to the freshman who are just coming to appreciate him for brightening their days without their regular teacher (and with newly won prizes, wrapped with care), to the teachers who know he goes above and beyond in their classrooms, not only following their plans to the key, but making the students’ blocks, or even weeks with simple humor, candy, trivia and the occasional song, Mr. Trost is a known, appreciated and cherished part of the FHS community. He truly is a Foxboro Warrior.

  64.
I sat down with Gabriel Trost and had a conversation about his life and his views on FHS. This man has led a very full life, to say the least. His personality outshines that of anyone else’s, and it is reflected in the statements he made in the interview. He is a very modest man with love and generosity coursing through his veins. Toward the end of the interview, he even assured me that sounding pretentious at any point in this article was not his desire whatsoever. There was not one negative word that came out of his mouth, and personally, I think there should be more people like Mr. Trost in the world.

  65.
Mr. Trost was born in Belarus, Poland on April 25th, 1924. Later he packed up and moved to the United States, and in New York, he received his education. Then, he made the courageous decision to enlist in the military in World War two. He served his country and this only adds to the respect I have for Mr. Trost. After the war’s conclusion, Gabriel managed a textile plant for a duration of time until it was closed, and then he retired. A month passed, and in the words of Mr. Trost, “I got fidgety.” He could not stand sitting on the couch and in a convenient turn of events, he got a job at FHS. This was special for him because he had a granddaughter attending the school motivating his desire to acquire any position available. He began working without pay, assisting in the special needs programs, then, as you all know, he received a spot at substitute teacher which he thoroughly completed then and still completes every time he is needed to this day.

  66.
Adding to the plethora of things you may not know about Mr. Trost, is that you would not be reading the November newsletter, and this article would not exist, without his efforts. Without proper funding, the newsletter was a loss deemed acceptable by the administration. In Mr. Trost’s opinion, it is a necessary form of expression of voice and self. “It gets what’s bottled up out.” With this influencing his decision, he offered to provide the necessary monetary amount to revive the letter. Realizing the mistake, the administration promptly paid the sum and the newsletter was saved with credit going to Mr. Trost.

  67.
You also may have seen Mr. Trost in a study hall doing some “Trost’s Trivia”. What you may not know is that he is not being paid to be there on that day and is simply just volunteering to make students’ days brighter. On his off days, he chooses to come in just to create smiles and bonds with the students, also volunteering with the special needs programs. According to him, “Pay is not that important”

  68.
Gabriel Trost bleeds blue and gold and his love for this school is difficult to match. The connections he makes with students stick with them throughout life. Someday, you, your wife, and kids will line up old toys and knick knacks in the front yard for a yard sale and you’ll encounter Mr. Trost searching for the next present he is going to give to the lucky person with the knowledge of the 21st President’s wife’s maiden name.

  69.
When asked to describe Foxboro High School Mr. Trost’s comment could not have been phrased better. He poetically stated, “It may be a building full of concrete and brick, but the people are beautiful in every single way.” There is a very special place in his heart for this school.

  70.
“I’ll be here as long as I’m physically able to”- Gabriel Trost

  104.
  105.
The 2013 FHS Talent Show on March 21st was full of surprises and hidden talents. After the hosts Jalen Reed and Drew McGeary introduced Brandon Dailey, he kicked off the show with a violin performance. His medley of tunes from the Black Eyed Peas to Carly Rae Jepsen was very well played. Brandon’s energy and confidence on stage made his performance very enjoyable to listen to.

  106.
Following Brandon were Jenna Cherry and Kayla Sepe – their harmonized version of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” had the audience clapping along! Lauren Cipolla’s dance to “Scream & Shout” was extremely creative and energetic. Her passion for performing and confidence on stage were very apparent. Hannah Kalcic was the next act. And might I just say that her performance of “Wings” was absolutely beautiful. Sung a cappella, her clear voice was lyrical and captured everyone’s attention.

  107.
The next act was quite a contrast to Hannah’s performance. Who else could walk onstage and rattle off convincing impressions but Zach Atanasoff? With the Spanish “Holt” book listening activities, Shrek’s gingerbread man, Mickey Mouse, Family Guy, and “Herbert the pervert”, Atanasoff’s impressions had everyone in hysterics. I personally liked the gingerbread man’s interrogation scene in which McGeary also played a wonderful Lord Farquaad. Impressive.

  108.
Back on the stage to perform again was Brandon Dailey, who was joined by Tae Palmer. With Brandon on piano and Tae singing, their rendition of “Stay” sounded as if Rihanna had appeared on stage. The act was well staged; there was no awkward standing in the middle of the stage and staring at the audience. You could tell the two of them enjoyed performing, and the charming eye contact at the end was a nice touch. There was real emotion in the performance.

  109.
The next act started off with Tyler Aubuchon and Luke Schaaf standing on stage looking psyched to perform. “Greyhound” came over the speakers, and Aubuchon began to juggle. Some of these acts really surprised me! After a few impressive bounce-off-the-knee and under-the-leg moves by both Aubuchon and Schaaf, the lights went out and the juggling balls lit up. All you could see were the glowing balls – it looked as if they were floating! The teamwork between the two was so coordinated, and everyone was cheering for them. There were only a few drops, and they seemed to be coordinated with whenever a flash from a camera went off (and THAT’s why they always announce “no flash photography, please”). Nonetheless, the act was riveting, and I really enjoyed it.

  110.
For the second-to-last act, Billy Clark performed an a cappella version of Bruno Mars’s “If I Were Your Man”. Even with such high notes in the song, the performance was excellent. He looked so comfortable on stage, and his performance won him the Crowd Favorite award! Congrats Billy!

  111.
To close out the show, Genne Rogan sang a cover of “Land Slide” by Fleetwood Mac. I had never heard her sing before, and I was so impressed. Not only did she have a pure and absolutely beautiful voice, but she also played guitar. She put a lot of emotion into her performance, and the song was light, sweet, and enchanting.

  112.
As Judges Powers, Grant, Cahan, and Pachla went to discuss the winner, Reed and McGeary did an entertaining reenactment of the show for anyone who had missed an act or two. Their beautiful voices and silly dances around the stage showed they really could have put on the show themselves… or maybe not. Their skits were “mad tight” and kept the audience amused until the judges returned. The two emcees then had an enjoyable time holding the audience in suspense as they announced the winners. Congrats to Jenna and Kayla in third place, Tyler and Luke in second, and Genne in first! Although these three acts were the sole winners, there were many impressive acts. In fact, the whole show was very well done. It ran smoothly (thanks to the Student Council, Megan Screen, and Tom Watson) and the variety of talents kept the audience interested. The 2013 FHS Talent Show was such a success – I wish there were going to be another one next year!

  175.
This past weekend, the Foxboro High School Drama Club put on its annual musical. For Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, students of all grade levels became sailors and passengers aboard the S.S. American, a 1930’s cruise ship headed for London from New York in their production of the play Anything Goes. Onboard, a complicated tangle of secret loves, illegal activity, and strange occurrences keeps the audience entertained and always ready for the next round of outrageous behavior. In Act I, a young Wall Street broker named Billy Crocker (Shane Walsh), preparing arrangements for his boss’s trip onboard the ship, encounters a girl he met once in a taxi cab, and learns that her name is Hope, and she is set to marry English nobleman Sir Evelyn Oakleigh (Alex Procaccini). Of course, he is in love with her. Before the ship has even left port, he also encounters gangsters “Moonface” Martin and Bonnie (Thomas Donnelly and Jaime Engler), who are escaping America, and steals away with them to avoid his boss, who thinks he is still in New York, and Hope’s mother (Colleen Schofield), who doesn’t want her daughter having anything to do with him. The gangsters, meanwhile, haven’t told Billy who they really are, nor that the ticket he used was that of their leader, Public Enemy Number 1 “Snake Eyes” Johnson. When Billy finds out, he spends the rest of the act in various disguises, trying to avoid being mis-identified as Pubic Enemy Number 1. While onboard, Billy meets a seductive nightclub singer named Reno Sweeney (Sydney Raymond), who at first has unrequited feelings for Billy, but soon falls for Hope’s husband-to-be Sir Evelyn.

  176.
Billy sets to work winning Hope. Helped by Reno, he tries to make it seem that Evelyn is involved in a passionate affair, but when Evelyn likes the idea of telling Hope he is passionate, the plan falls flat. The act ends when Billy is recognized by Hope’s mother, and he is identified as “Snake Eyes”Johnson. Rather than be thrown into the ship’s jail, however, Billy, as Johnson, becomes a celebrity.

  177.
When the curtain reopens, Billy is being treated as a guest of honor rather than a criminal. Billy says he has been reformed, claiming Moonface, disguised as a minister, has helped him reform and calling for a revival and confession for all the ship’s guests. Sir Evelyn admits to a one-night stand with a Chinese woman named Plum Blossom, and Billy admits he is not really Snake-Eyes Johnson in the hopes of winning Hope back. Moonface tries to help by saying he is not really a minister, but instead of improving the situation, both men are thrown into the brig. Billy worries he will never see Hope again. When two Chinese con men are thrown into the brig for conning the third class passengers out of their money, Billy and Moonface challenge the pair to a game of strip poker, win, and together with Reno, show up to Hope and Sir Evelyn’s onboard marriage disguised as Sir Evelyn’s lover Plum Blossom’s parents. They demand Hope marries Billy (still in disguise) if Sir Evelyn does not want the scandal publicized. The marriage is called off. But the play does not end without a marriage. Billy and Hope are married, as are Reno and Sir Evelyn. Hope’s mother meets Billy’s boss, who had been wandering through-out the ship during the play looking for his glasses, and it seems as though sparks fly.

  178.
At times, it was difficult to keep up with events in the play. The microphones did not always project the actors’ voices, and at times conversations occurred that I could not hear. During the singing/dance numbers, the music often drowned out the voices singing, leaving me at the end of some songs wondering what they had just sung about.

  179.
A few things went wrong during the production that made the performance all the more entertaining. When Moonface and Billy were in the brig, they both stepped out the jail through the spaces in the bars to sing, yet minutes later lamenting “We have to get out of this jail somehow!” This scene, whether intentional or not, amused the audience to no end, and members laughed every time they squeezed through the bars. At one point, Moonface broke a jar cell bar, and judging by his shocked expression, that event wasn’t in the script. It sent the audience into gales of laughter, however, and the entire cast rolled with it. As soon as Moonface and Billy won the clothes of the Chinese, later on in the scene, the stage darkened, signaling the end of the scene. Until, two seconds later, the lights came back on, unintentionally exposing the scene mid-change and one of the Chinese with her jacket half off. Though accidental, this made the play all the more enjoyable.

  180.
Overall, I enjoyed Anything Goes, though it was not a production without faults. Sometimes it was difficult to follow events, thanks in part to poor acoustics and thanks in part to the whirlwind speed at which the play progressed. However, the music was well performed, the singing was excellent, and the acting was superb. The FHS Drama Club’s Anything Goes was a well-done play that amused and entertained all who attended it

  205.
Earlier today, the students and staff played in the annual Student versus Staff Basketball Game. The stands were filled with many students and staff each rooting for their respective teams. The students got the game rolling when senior Mike Tally won the tip off against Mr. Murray. The teachers had the first basket of the game made by Brandon Phillips to follow by the first basket for the students by senior Ashley Snyder.

  206.
With eight minutes into the game the teachers were winning 10-8. Mr. Montanaro took the first foul shot of the game and senior Jimmy McCoy for the students. With 2:50 left to go, the students took their first time out. At the end of the first half, the students had a slim lead, 21-20.

  207.
The teachers were down 32-26 early in the second half. At 10:32, Mr. Bain made a 3 pointer to help get the staff back on track. Brandon and Mr. Wilensky were the next staff members to get fouled, both only making one of the two shots.

  208.
Mr. Neely was fouled twice and made all four shots with 4:42 to go in the game. With 3:38 left, Neely made a 3 pointer to make the game 42-38 in favor of the teachers. The students called one last time out with 36 seconds left and senior Adam Saltis made a three pointer to make the game 42-41.

  209.
A couple more foul shots were missed by Mr. Gibbs and Mr. Murray, but the students could not get any more good looks and the teachers won 42-41.

  224.

Ms. Keohane is up! Teaching Biology and Environmental Science, here is her perspective on your questions:

  225.

  226.
Why did you become a teacher?

  227.

  228.
“I love science, but I didn’t want to be in a lab all day and not interact with any other human beings. I liked kids too, having been a camp counselor.”

  230.
What was your least favorite subject in high school? Why?

  231.

  233.

  234.
Did you play any sports, or were you in any clubs?

  235.

  236.
“Yes. I played field hockey, ran track, and was part of the student council.”

  239.

  240.
“Right now it’s The Daily Show.”

  241.

  242.
What is your favorite genre of music?

  243.

  244.
“I don’t really have one. I like all music so I’ll listen to almost anything.”

  245.

  246.
If you could teach any subject other than your own, what would it be?

  247.

  248.
“Probably math.”

  249.

  250.
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?

  251.

  252.
“I’d say my greatest accomplishment is being a teacher.”

  253.

  254.
If you saw a student outside of school, would you say hi or run away like they might?

  255.

  256.
“I would say hi-I wouldn’t actively avoid them!”

  257.

  258.
You’re relaxing on the beach. What book do you want with you?

  259.

  260.
“The Harry Potter series- and not just one book…the whole series.”

  351.

On Saturday December 15th, the Community Warriors held their first ever fundraiser at the high school cafeteria. It was a gingerbread house making and decorating event for kids in grades K-5. Although it was messy, the children had a fun time decorating and building their houses as well as eating the candy!

  352.
There were games to play and a raffle for a giant one pound gingerbread man. It was a great turnout of 25 Foxboro children; boys and girls of all ages.

  353.
The goal of the Community Warriors is not to fundraise but to do more of volunteering and helping the community. However, they saw this event as a great way to do both and were happy to do so. Seven of the Community Warriors were able to be there for this event.

  354.
The Community Warriors would like to thank Beth and Lauren Bayuk for volunteering their time as well as Linda Keller and Mr. Kaeser.

  355.
The gingerbread event was a huge success and they hope they will be able to do it again next year.
