  112. <p>Wrangling with installing Ubuntu on an Acer AcpireOne netbook,
  113. and had no end of troubles with it. To start with, my school uses
  114. SafeConnect NAC which is an absolute crap-for-crap insecure system,
  115. but has the decided disadvantage of being impossible to get running
  116. with the console mode netinstaller. Since I needed encrypted LVM,
  117. I had to get the Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex alternate install on a
  118. flash drive. Here's what I found:</p>
  119. <ul>
  120. <li>None of the <a
  121. href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick"
  122. title="Installation from USB Stick on Community Ubuntu Documentation"
  123. >recommended methods</a> work. <code>isotostick.sh</code> has undefined
  124. problems before even building the drive image. UNetBootIn takes perfectly good
  125. ISOs and crufts them into netinstalls. The manual syslinux install
  126. fails to fool the installer into believing in the fake
  127. <code>cdrom0</code>.</li>
  128.
  129. <li>Luckily, <a
  130. href="http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4404569#post4404569"
  131. title="Installation from USB Stick on Ubuntu Forums"
  132. >some intrepid soul</a> has described how to create a minimal USB stick
  133. that will try to mount and install any ISO placed on its root. This works
  134. like a charm.</li>
  135.
  136. <li>Just one thing: it'll call your LVM volume group <code>sdb</code>. This
  137. won't cause any problems when the drive becomes <code>sda</code> at reboot,
  138. though, because everything's referenced by UUID.</li>
