I’m sure you’re sooooooooooooooooo surprised.

The Preseason AP Top 25 poll was released on Monday morning, an indication that we are closing in on the beginning of the 2022 college football season.

To the surprise of no one, the Alabama Crimson Tide leads the preseason rankings at No. 1. ‘Bama at the top of the preseason poll might as well be a fixture of the season: You know it’s going to happen, and ain’t much has happened to dissuade the pollsters from thinking otherwise.

With the Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 2, the next SEC team we find is the Georgia Bulldogs. The reigning CFP champions rank No. 3 to start this season. UGA is still littered with elite talent on both sides of the ball and is the prohibitive favorite to win the SEC East again. They start the season against the preseason eleventh-ranked Oregon Ducks in Atlanta.

With the Clemson Tigers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish rounding out the Top 5, the next SEC team we find is the Texas A&M Aggies. The Aggies start the year off ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll. A lofty position to be sure, A&M has a talented recruiting class coming into the fold as well as a whole heck of a lot of hype.

Three other SEC teams go 19-21, as the Arkansas Razorbacks, Kentucky Wildcats, and Ole Miss Rebels round out conference representation.

SIX SEC teams make the Preseason Coaches Poll

Three SEC teams make the Top 10 and SIX are in the Top 25.

SIX teams from the SEC have landed in the 2022 Preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

The Alabama Crimson Tide begins the 2022 season ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll. The Tide received an overwhelming amount of first-place votes, 54, as no other team received more than six. ‘Bama figures to be a fixture in the CFP and at the top of the rankings, as that train hasn’t stopped rolling in Tuscaloosa yet.

The team that did receive those six first-place votes is also from the SEC, as the Georgia Bulldogs start the year at No. 3. Georgia comes into the season on the heels of their first National Championship in football since 1980. Georgia should be a strong contender to make it back to the Playoff this season with talent all over both sides of the ball again.

The third team from the SEC in the Top 10 is the Texas A&M Aggies. The Aggies check in at No. 7 in the poll, as they’ve garnered lots of preseason hype coupled with a terrific recruiting class rolling into College Station this fall. It will prove interesting to see if A&M can match the hype but they are certainly starting loftily.

Going down the chute, the next SEC team on the rankings is the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky begins the season at No. 21. The Cats achieved 10 wins for the second time in four seasons a year ago and are hoping to do more damage and build off that success.

Two spots later, we find the No. 23-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. The Hogs were a fun surprise last year, improving on a three-win campaign with a nine-win season in Sam Pittman’s second year at the help.

Lastly, we have the No. 24-ranked Ole Miss Rebels. The Rebs won 10 games for just the eighth time in program history last year and are also looking to do more damage again this season.

Williams flipped from Nebraska to the Tigers.

The Auburn Tigers successfully flipped a four-star commit on Wednesday.

Edge rusher Ashley Williams, previously committed to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, announced he would instead play college ball down on the Plains. He made the announcement of his pledge to the Tigers on his personal Twitter account:

Williams is a 6-foot-5, 225-pound edge rusher out of Zachary, Louisiana. He is ranked 350th overall in the Class of 2023 and 37th at his position. In the talent-rich state of Louisiana, he ranks 18th, a strong sign for him to be inside the Top 20.

Auburn now has six players of four-star caliber in their 2023 recruiting class. Williams joins Karmello English, Jeremiah Cobb, Terrance Love, Wilky Denaud, and Bradyn Joiner in the class thus far. The class still has some work to do though as they only rank 63rd in the nation as of this juncture. But since this is just a six-player class, that comes as no surprise. Certainly that ball will get rolling and they’;ll likely start ascending soon enough.

Smith was arrested early Wednesday morning.

Texas A&M Aggies wide receiver Ainias Smith was arrested early Wednesday in Texas. Smith was arrested on charges of DWI, possession of fewer than 2 ounces of marijuana, and the unlawful carrying of a weapon.

He has promptly been suspended by the program and will not attend SEC media days on Thursday with his team.

According to The Eagle, Smith was pulled over on Wednesday morning by Texas A&M University police:

At approximately 2 a.m. Wednesday, Smith was pulled over by University Police while driving 51 mph in a 35-mph zone on University Drive. He also was drifting from left to right in his lane, according to the probable cause statement. Smith after failing several physical intoxication tests was arrested and consented to a breathalyzer test, which came back with .066 and .061 readings, according to the probable cause statement. The legal limit in the state of Texas is .08.

Smith’s car was searched while he was being tested, which is when the marijuana and a handgun he had in the car were found.

In Texas, the first DWI offense and possession of marijuana up to 2 ounces are Class B misdemeanors, while the unlawful carrying of a weapon is a Class A.

Ainias, a senior wideout, had been expected to be a major contributor to a talented Aggies team in 2022. Now his future in 2022 has been hit by a significant cloud of doubt following this incident.

Florida gets a bit more sizzle for their 2023 recruiting class. Billy Napier now has eight four-star recruits in the class with the addition of Webb. They rank 26th in the nation right now with a lot of time to go of course.
2023 5-star quarterback Arch Manning commits to Texas over Alabama, Georgia, and others

Another Manning could well be in the SEC after all. Ba dum, tss.

Arch Manning is going to Texas Longhorns. The highly-touted Class of 2023 recruit announced Thursday he was choosing the Longhorns over SEC powers Alabama and Georgia, among others. Manning, on his personal Twitter account, announced that he will be in Austin playing for Steve Sarkisian come 2023 and beyond:

Committed to the University of Texas. #HookEm pic.twitter.com/jHYbjBaF5K
— Arch Manning (@ArchManning) June 23, 2022

Arch, next in line in the Manning family namesake, was heavily recruited by plenty of power programs in the CFB landscape. So, suffice it to say, it’s a big recruiting win for Texas. The SEC powers gave plenty of interest, but in the end, Arch will be suiting up in burnt orange and white as of this juncture.

Texas’ recruiting class currently ranks 29th in the nation following Manning’s commitment. Manning of course is the first five-star of the group and is the top recruit in the Class of 2023. One should likely expect Texas will follow with other blue-chippers as time progresses.

As for the SEC? The conference’s upper echelon is obviously still doing alright in recruiting. But it shall now be interesting to see how this looks come 2023 and beyond, what with Texas jumping ship soon and such.
