40.
Visitors were treated to a wide variety of art forms created by members of the Diverse Manners Arts Group, a Newport-based artists collective. The work on display included paintings, photography, ceramics, embroidery and digital art.

 41.
Over the four days the show attracted over 150 visitors.

 42.
The show’s title, ‘Perfect Imperfection’, reflected the idea that incredible beauty can be found in what is flawed or damaged. Most of the artists took inspiration from this, exploring themes such as self image, body image, redemption, and times of crisis.

 43.
Beth from The Pill Trust created an amazing collaborative piece of artwork with a group of pupils from Pillgwenlly Primary School depicting Commercial Street, which runs through the heart of Pill.

 44.
Many visitors praised the talents of the exhibiting artists, one remarking that the exhibition was an “absolutely astounding display of beauty, creativity, life and the handiwork of God”. Another visitor described it as, “a wonderful display of creativity and commitment to the glorious message of our great God – who makes something beautiful from our brokenness”.

 45.
Most of the artwork was available to buy, with 25% of sales donated to The Pill Trust. The exhibition raised £430 for the trust.

 46.
The Diverse Manners Arts Group have passed on their thanks to St Stephen’s for hosting one of their most successful exhibitions. They would also like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all who supported the event.

The interior has been transformed and refreshed to make a flexible and welcoming space for both Sundays and midweek events. Read on to hear more about our journey to this point.

 89.
Before:

 90.

 91.
After:

 92.

 93.
The conjoining of the churches of St Paul’s and St Stephen’s has led to much discussion on the way forward. St Paul’s and St Stephen’s were quite different in their ways and we have been striving to marry the two and create a church that can serve the whole of the parish here in Pillgwenlly. Much has been done to try and build a style of worship acceptable to all worshippers and now we have turned our attention to the buildings themselves. Before the pandemic, we were able to repair the church hall to make it watertight and better insulated, and decorate the interior. Some work had also been done to stop water ingress into the church and to repair water damage.

 94.
The next step was to focus on the interior of the church building itself, where we wanted to create an adaptable, warm, light and clean space. Many of the pews were in a state of disrepair, they were dark and it was difficult to clean around them. They were also not very comfortable, if we are honest. We want everyone to feel at home in St Stephen’s and open up possibilities of using the church space for other groups, so it was decided to remove the pews. This was no mean feat, as they were on plinths with gaps beneath, so the floor would first have to be made even before any carpet could be laid. This was a serious undertaking involving extensive advice from relevant experts, faculties from the Church in Wales, and fundraising. The Diocese was supportive of our plans, so we looked around for means to fund the project and successfully applied to the Laing Family Trust.

 95.
So far we have replaced the central heating boiler and radiators, removed the pews and the rear vestry area, levelled and carpeted the floor, extended the raised area at the front of the church (making room for the worship band and to allowing us to bring the altar forward), and added a ramp and handrail to make the raised area accessible. With the pews gone and separate seating, we now have a versatile space which can be arranged in many ways to suit the occasion, while the new chairs are far more comfortable than the old wooden pews. Many traditional features have been retained within this more modern setting, including some of the pews situated around the stone font.

 96.

 97.
Much work has also been done to clean up the grounds to give a more welcoming first impression. We have had a good look around the buildings, noting further work required to keep the buildings going for many years to come. We will be setting up a timetable of work to address many remaining issues with the church exterior which have accumulated over many years. God is good and He has provided everything we have needed so far. We we are trusting that He will supply the money and expertise to make the church building a great asset to the community and worshipping congregation for many years to come.

Even while off the bike, they have been tackling many culinary challenges, which were inspired by milestones along the way and appear to have been both bizarre and delicious in equal parts.

 124.
This feat of pedalling and cooking is all to raise funds for our exciting and ambitious refurbishment project (details and more photos to come soon). With one week to go, we have passed the sum of £7,500 and we are still aiming for £10,000 from the Bike Off overall. If you would like to contribute any amount, small or large, please visit the donation page.

 125.
Justin and Lucy’s astonishing effort and progress has drawn attention from the South Wales Argus, the Church Times, and the Diocese of Monmouth.

 126.
Tomorrow will be Justin’s chance to shine in the kitchen, attempting the famous Welsh rarebit, before the space station finale leg this week and an anticipated completion of the full mileage on Saturday 3rd April. You can see all the virtual stops below and scroll down further for some foodie highlights from the journey so far (warning this may may you hungry).

 261.

After four very successful years of church life and community work in the city centre, at the old Post Office, St Paul’s– already a nomadic church – is leaving Bridge Street to base itself with St Stephen’s Church, in Adeline Street, Pill.

 262.
Plans are already well under way for the refurbishment of St Stephen’s Church. The roof no longer leaks and the hall has had a much needed facelift. Now attention is turning to the inside of the church: Rev Justin Groves says, “We want to make the church a place where people love to be, mostly because of the welcome and love they find there, through the people and Jesus himself, but also because the seats are comfortable, the surroundings are pleasant and it’s the place the community gets together. And last, but by no means least, because it’s warm!”

 263.
Rev Justin goes on to explain that their church community want to welcome people through their doors every day, not just on Sundays. Hopefully after the refurbishment, the more flexible space will make that possible. The newly combined church is already attracting more young families. Even in lockdown, family worship continues with their fun, Facebook-live Sunday services.

 264.
As they look ahead, St Paul’s and St Stephen’s are excited about working with other Christians to share and show the love of Jesus Christ, especially at this time of uncertainty and great need.

 265.
Justin says, “If Jesus was a vicar today, I bet he would choose somewhere just like Pill to reboot his church. He was all about changing the world and individual lives for good. Where better to begin something new than one of the most deprived and challenging areas in Wales? He walked with people whatever their circumstances and we plan to do the same. Faith isn’t just some private affair – it’s about our communities – St Paul’s and St Stephen’s will be known ,I hope, as the Community Church in Pill.”

 266.
We welcome people now who have no church to belong to – to think about joining our new adventure, we look forward with others to an even better Pill.
