I never thought it would get this crazy at 2-0, but football changes quickly.

“When I saw Sabitzer shoot, I said with all my heart I have to save it and well, thank goodness it happened. Thankfully, it worked out.”

Courtois compared the save to two of his famous stops: one against Sadio Mane in the Champions League final and another against Arsenal in 2018.

“They are beautiful moments. At 3-2, making that save… If we get to the final and win, it will be in the top five of my best saves. Important and beautiful.”

Huijsen’s sending off

Speaking about Dean Huijsen’s red card, Courtois called it a big loss for the team. “Dean was playing well and giving us options.

“Now, someone else will need to step up. This is Real Madrid—many players are ready to take the chance.

“His red card was unlucky, but it’s something young players learn from. We’ll try to win the next matches for him so he can play in the final.”

Dean Huijsen was sent off against Borussia Dortmund. (Photo by Sandra Montanez/Getty Images)

Courtois also spoke about life under new coach Xabi Alonso. “Tournaments like this help the team come together, especially with new players.

“We’re spending a lot of time with each other, which builds bonds. The boss is always energetic, attentive, and pushes everyone to give their best.

“He wants the whole team involved, both in attack and defence. That’s the only way to win—everyone has to be in the right place so players like Vini, Kylian or Jude can shine.”

On facing PSG and remembering Jota

Looking ahead to the semi-final against PSG, Courtois acknowledged the challenge. “They’re the European champions, and they play very well.

“We need to fix our mistakes from today because they press high and keep the ball well. But I believe we can find the answers and win,” he shared confidently.

Finally, Courtois expressed his sadness over the death of Diogo Jota. “It was shocking news. He had three kids like me, and he had just got married… it’s heartbreaking. We send our deepest condolences to his family and team.

“Everyone spoke well of him, and that shows what a good person he was. It reminds us how precious life is and how quickly things can change.”

Source: Mundo Deportivo

Madrid Universal<dc:publisher>Madrid Universal</dc:publisher>

Ter Stegen-Inter latest, Kolo update, Osimhen peace? Transfer news 🤑

The summer is getting hotter, just like the football transfer negotiations that are starting to heat up.

Below, as usual, are the most important ones for each major team.

Juventus, no new loan for Kolo Muani: PSG open only to permanent sale

Paris Saint-Germain is not willing to grant a new loan to Juventus for Randal Kolo Muani. According to TuttoMercatoWeb, the French club would only accept a permanent transfer or a loan with an obligation to buy by June 2026.

Strengthening PSG's position is the concrete interest from Chelsea, ready to make an offer for the forward born in 1998. The Londoners could make a formal proposal in the coming days.

Milan, Sassuolo targets Adli, Pobega, and Colombo: awaiting a concrete move

Sassuolo has set its sights on three players leaving Milan: Yacine Adli, Tommaso Pobega, and Lorenzo Colombo. The neroverdi, back in Serie A, are looking for reinforcements and are considering a possible market collaboration with the rossoneri. As reported by Matteo Moretto on Fabrizio Romano's Italian YouTube channel, it is currently an initial interest.

Adli is out of the project and will train with Milan Futuro; Pobega is also of interest to Genoa and Cremonese; Colombo is being followed by Sassuolo, Torino, and Genoa. Milan is awaiting official proposals.

Inter, evaluating ter Stegen? The truth

Marc-André ter Stegen could leave Barcelona, and Inter is watching with interest. As reported by the newspaper Sport, the German goalkeeper is annoyed by the arrival of Joan Garcia and some rumors in the press that he finds damaging to his image. Inter has initiated preliminary inquiries, taking advantage of Galatasaray's interest in Sommer, who could leave Milan during the market.

However, Fabrizio Romano has denied contacts between the parties, so the German, barring changes, will not be Inter's new goalkeeper.

Napoli, attempt to mend with Osimhen: possibility of staying emerges

The situation of Victor Osimhen remains uncertain: after a loan to Galatasaray, the Nigerian has not yet found a new European team, his priority. Napoli is asking for a 75 million release clause, and Osimhen demands at least 12 million in salary, making negotiations difficult.

According to Il Mattino, the club is trying to mend the relationship with the striker, opening up to a possible stay, which had been excluded so far. The complication in finding alternatives like Lucca and Nunez pushes towards this possibility, which Antonio Conte would not mind.

Roma, Flamengo sets the price for Ortiz

Roma is tracking Leo Ortiz for defense, and Flamengo has set the price for the defender targeted by the giallorossi.

As reported by Ge.Globo, the Brazilian reds want 30 million euros to let the defender head to the Capital.

Lazio, goalkeeper position in balance: Mandas targeted by Wolverhampton, Chevalier dream

The future of the goalkeeper position at Lazio remains uncertain, with Provedel and Mandas competing for the starting spot. Sarri's arrival has clarified the hierarchies, but the market could overturn the situation, given Wolverhampton's interest in Mandas.

If a significant offer arrives, Lazio could sell Mandas, focusing on Furlanetto and Renzetti while waiting for a reinforcement. Among the names on the biancocelesti's list is Lucas Chevalier, a 23-year-old from Lille, closely followed by Sarri and the club. This is reported by Il Messaggero.

Fiorentina, inquiry for Deossa: eyes on Monterrey's midfielder

Fiorentina is following with interest Nelson Deossa, a Colombian midfielder born in 1999 from Monterrey, as reported by the Argentine newspaper Olé. At the moment, it is just a preliminary inquiry, while other teams have made more concrete moves.

In particular, Sporting Lisbon is in the lead, while in Brazil, Flamengo aims to replace Gerson, who moved to Zenit for 25 million. The Brazilian club already has the necessary amount to try to buy Deossa, whose release clause is 20 million euros.

This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇮🇹 here.

📸 Alex Grimm - 2025 Getty Images

OneFootball<dc:publisher>OneFootball</dc:publisher>

Harry Wilson's late try saves Australia in a 21-18 win over Fiji

A last-gasp try by captain Harry Wilson has salvaged a dramatic 21-18 win for Australia on Sunday in its international season-opener against Fiji. Noah Lolesio added the conversion.

The best move of the first half — frequently punctuated by stoppages which stifled any match momentum — led to the Wallabies' second try when a sweeping backline move featuring Len Ikitau and Joseph Suaali'i allowed Fraser McReight to score in the corner. Lolesio again converted to stretch the lead to 14-0.

Fullback Salesi Rayasi responded almost immediately for Fiji just before the halftime break, somehow finding space to to wriggle through the defense to score in the corner after his team had counterattacked from an ill-advised chip kick by the Wallabies. The Australians had only needed to maintain possession for a few seconds more to preserve a 14-point margin into the break.

Flyhalf Caleb Muntz missed the conversion from the sideline for a 14-5 half-time score.

A tale of two halves

The Wallabies may have dominated the first half, but it was all Fiji in the second.

Muntz added a penalty goal after the break to narrow the margin to six points before the match was upended by some vintage Flying Fiji attack.

Jiuta Wainiqolo gained possession after broken play inside Fiji's half, the winger then slalomed his way through four defenders in a weaving run before guiding a looping pass for Lekima Tagitagivalu to score and spark jubilant celebrations by the large number of Fiji supporters at Newcastle.

Muntz converted to give Fiji a 15-14 lead.

The Fijians almost went further ahead, appearing to score another thrilling try down the same right flank but it was overruled by the Television Match Official who found that an Australian player had stepped into touch while in possession in the leadup to the try.

Another Muntz penalty goal extended the lead to four points with 14 minutes remaining, and meant Australia needed to score at least a try for victory.

Lions next

The battered Wallabies have two weeks to recover before the much-anticipated first test against the Lions.

On Saturday, the Lions maintained their unbeaten record on their Australian tour with a third straight win, but delivered their least convincing performance yet against a depleted New South Wales Waratahs lineup missing most of its Wallabies.

The match ended with a hint of controversy, with Lions head coach Andy Farrell suggesting the Allianz Stadium surface had been intentionally over-watered by the Waratahs to disrupt his team's style of play.

The Lions have a tour match against Australia's strongest provincial team, the Brumbies, in Canberra on Wednesday.

___

AP rugby: https://apnews.com/hub/rugby

Associated Press<dc:publisher>Associated Press</dc:publisher>

Chicago visits Minnesota after Reese's 24-point showing

Chicago Sky (5-11, 1-7 Eastern Conference) at Minnesota Lynx (16-2, 12-1 Western Conference)

Minneapolis; Sunday, 7 p.m. EDT

BETMGM SPORTSBOOK LINE: Lynx -15.5; over/under is 159.5

BOTTOM LINE: Chicago Sky faces the Minnesota Lynx after Angel Reese scored 24 points in the Sky's 92-85 win over the Los Angeles Sparks.

The Lynx are 10-0 in home games. He admitted the game was a bit too tense at the end, saying, “Maybe it’s good that we stay on our toes for the next match.”

His focus is now fully on the big semi-final against PSG, which he called a “great game” that everyone is excited for.

Alonso shared that his team had the match under control until the 80th minute. “We were solid with and without the ball. But after our third goal, things got messy for a couple of minutes,” he said.

Luckily for Real Madrid, they still secured their spot in the semi-finals, which brought a smile to Alonso’s face.

On Huijsen’s red card

When asked about Dean Huijsen’s red card, Alonso admitted he had not decided how it would affect their preparations. “I’ll think about it later, maybe on the plane. But it’s not good news,” he noted.

Fran Garcia earned praise as the best player on the pitch. “He was brilliant, very focused, and showed perfect timing.

“He took advantage of the space Vini created and scored because he pushed forward at the right time,” Alonso explained. He added that García’s attitude has been excellent.

On TAA, Gonzalo, Mbappe

Gonzalo Garcia scored his fourth goal of the competition. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

Alonso also talked about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance. “He’s only been here three weeks after 15 years at Liverpool. He’s still adapting. He had a solid first half and is learning fast. We’re supporting him every day,” said Alonso.

He praised Gonzalo Garcia, who keeps scoring important goals. “He knows where to be and when to finish. He’s proving he’s a real goalscorer,” he stated.

Speaking about Kylian Mbappe, Alonso said, “He’s looking good, but not quite at 100 percent yet. He’ll get better, and we hope he feels perfect for the semi-final.”

On Courtois and facing PSG

On goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Alonso couldn’t hide his appreciation. “Courtois is incredible. That last save was huge.

“Having him gives us so much confidence. He’s the kind of player who wins you games.”

Finally, Alonso shared his excitement about facing PSG. “It’s going to be a huge test.

“They’ve been in great form since the Champions League round of 16. It will be tough, but we’re growing as a team and ready for the challenge.”

Source: AS

Madrid Universal<dc:publisher>Madrid Universal</dc:publisher>

Aliyah Boston's Big Game in Caitlin Clark's Absence Didn't Go Unnoticed

Aliyah Boston did all she could.

Aliyah Boston's Big Game in Caitlin Clark's Absence Didn't Go Unnoticed originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Indiana Fever needed the rest of the team to step up on Saturday night amid another injury absence for cornerstone superstar Caitlin Clark.

Clark was forced to sit out again on Saturday against the Los Angeles Sparks as she continues to deal with a lingering groin injury. This was the 23-year-old's fifth straight missed contest, and there currently is no firm timetable for her return.

Aliyah Boston got the memo, and the three-time All-Star came up big for Indiana. She dropped a game-high 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting, to go along with 12 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in 32 minutes of action.

Unfortunately for the Fever, not even Boston's strong performance was enough to spare them from their blushes. Despite the 6-foot-5 forward-center's heroics, Indiana still fell to L.A., 89-87.

Boston's praiseworthy outing did not go unnoticed, though. The Fever took to social media after the final buzzer to announce the 23-year-old as the Stat Leader of the Game.

Aliyah Boston tonight vs. the Sparks: pic.twitter.com/xXBFufzwC5
— Indiana Fever (@IndianaFever) July 6, 2025

Boston has been on a tear this season, averaging a career-high 16.6 points on 59.7% shooting, 8.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.2 blocks in 29.9 minutes per game.

Her strong play throughout the campaign led to Boston being voted as a starter in the upcoming WNBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis, where she will potentially be teammates with Clark, who was named an All-Star Game captain after receiving the most fan votes.

Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark laughing during an Indiana Fever game.© Grace Hollars/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images.

The Fever will need Boston to keep her foot on the gas in their next game as Indiana hosts the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday, especially if Clark is forced to sit out again.

Related: WNBA Blown Away by Indiana Fever Play Against Sparks

Related: Lexie Hull Steals the Show With Her Outfit for Fever-Sparks

Related: Caitlin Clark’s Interaction With Ref During Fever’s Ninth Loss

This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 6, 2025, where it first appeared.

Athlon Sports<dc:publisher>Athlon Sports</dc:publisher>

'I couldn't open my eyes' - According to ExWHUEmployee on The West Ham Way Patreon, the Hammers are now in advanced negotiations with Parma’s Zion Suzuki, widely regarded as “one of the best goalkeeping talents in Europe.”

Potter, who is shaping his team in preparation for a significant rebuild, has placed the recruitment of a new No.1 high on his agenda. With Lukasz Fabianski departing the club after the expiry of his contract, and Alphonse Areola not guaranteed to retain the starting role, West Ham are eager to bring in fresh competition between the sticks.

Photo IMAGO

Zion Suzuki: A Rising Star

Zion Suzuki, the 6’3” Japanese international born in the USA, has become a sought-after name across Europe. Previously linked with Manchester United, Leeds United, and even Chelsea, Suzuki has made a strong impression during his time with Parma in Serie A. The 21-year-old is of Japanese and Ghanaian heritage and has chosen to represent Japan internationally.

This multicultural background and impressive ability make Suzuki not just a valuable addition on the pitch but a commercially astute acquisition as well.

“It would also tick the Asian market signing that the club have desires for a long time.”

Negotiations Progressing Despite No Agreement Yet

While ExWHUEmployee confirmed the club are “in advanced talks with Zion Suzuki,” it’s worth noting that neither personal terms nor a transfer fee have been agreed at this stage.

“The player appears to have emerged as a top keeper target and talks have already started with the player through his agent and he could be one of the next players to join the club if all goes to plan, and the club decide that wages and fee are reasonable.”

A quick resolution is possible if both parties align on these outstanding issues. The deal, should it go through, would represent a clear signal of intent from Graham Potter and the West Ham recruitment team.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

West Ham fans may view this development with cautious optimism. Zion Suzuki is still only 21, and he’s shown glimpses of real potential, Potter’s willingness to target such a young GK suggests a long-term project is in motion. Suzuki’s signing would be emblematic of a broader strategy — blending youth, global commercial appeal, and technical quality. With a 6’3” frame and international experience already under his belt, fans may see this as an exciting, if slightly risky, investment.

It’s also clear that the club is finally tapping into the Asian football market, something long discussed but rarely executed. That in itself may win favour among fans who’ve wanted the club to modernise both on and off the pitch.

Still, the key factor will be whether Suzuki is signed as the No.1 or merely to challenge Areola. Many will be hoping for the former, provided he proves he’s ready. If the move comes off, it could be a bold statement in what looks to be a busy summer for the Hammers.

EPL Index<dc:publisher>EPL Index</dc:publisher>

Aliyah Boston’s Failed Final Shot Draws Blunt Response From Fever Coach

Boston missed the game-tying buzzer-beater...

Aliyah Boston’s Failed Final Shot Draws Blunt Response From Fever Coach originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

After winning three straight games without Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston and the Indiana Fever came back down to Earth.

On Saturday night, Boston and the Fever suffered their ninth loss of the season, falling to Rickea Jackson and the Los Angeles Sparks, 89-87, in front of their home crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The game swung when Jackson hit a short jumper to give the Sparks an 88-87 lead. Now, according to media reports, an initial diagnosis has already been made.

As both 'kicker' and 'Bild' report independently of each other, Musiala is said to have been diagnosed with a fibula fracture. The latter also mention damage to several ligaments and predict an absence of four to five months. However, further and more precise medical examinations will only take place over the course of Sunday after his return to Munich.

With an absence of four to five months, the football year 2025 would indeed be over for Musiala, but the worst fears from yesterday would also be averted. Many fans had already suspected that the severity of the injury could mean he would miss the entire 25/26 season as well as the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

Nonetheless, it remains to be seen what the further examinations on site in Munich will reveal.

This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇩🇪 here.

📸 PATRICIA DE MELO MOREIRA - AFP or licensors

OneFootball<dc:publisher>OneFootball</dc:publisher>

Thibaut Courtois Offers Honest Take on Dean Huijsen Missing PSG Match

PSG booked their spot in the semifinals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup with a dramatic win over Bayern Munich on Saturday in Atlanta. Indiana's three-game winning streak — which includes Tuesday's Commissioner's Cup championship win against the Minnesota Lynx — came to an abrupt end after the Sparks secured a statement win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday.

Caitlin Clark was out of commission again in this one as the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year sat out her fifth straight contest due to a lingering groin injury. There was some hope that the 23-year-old would be able to play against L.A. after being listed as day-to-day, but the team ultimately decided to err on the side of caution and have her sit out another contest.

Clark took on her usual role on the bench, supporting her teammates in Saturday's game. At one point in the contest, the cameras caught the former Iowa star's light-hearted moment with a referee. During a deadball situation, Clark can be seen attempting to high-five the game official as her teammates returned to the court.

i love her so much 😭😭😭 pic.twitter.com/H5VstpE7PH
— chris (@chrisclxrk) July 6, 2025

Based on her reaction, it appears that Clark mistakenly took the ref as one of her Indiana teammates. It was the first hit and RBI of his major-league career.

The hit produced one of eight two-out runs for the Sox, who cruised to a 10-3 victory against the Colorado Rockies in front of a sellout crowd of 47,351 on Saturday at Coors Field.

Montgomery went 3-for-5 with the first-inning RBI triple and singles in the fourth and seventh innings in his second major-league game.

“Once I got the first one out of the way, I was like, ‘All right, now we’re just playing, now we’re just trying to win the game,’” Montgomery said. “The rest of the guys, (Lenyn) Sosa, (Mike) Tauchman, they started the game off hot, that’s why they’re at the top of the lineup. Our veterans, they set the tone early and it’s kind of easy to feed off of.”

Sosa had three hits — including a two-run home run — and four RBIs while Tauchman had three hits and one RBI as the Sox secured at least a series victory.

It’s their ninth series victory of 2025, matching last year’s mark according to the Sox.

The Sox (30-59) had a season-high 15 hits, including a 464-foot, two-run home run by Michael A. Taylor in the ninth.

“It seemed like everybody was feeling good,” manager Will Venable said. “For me, even before the game started this game was going to be about energy and focus the second day after we arrived really late (to Denver from Los Angeles). Hits give you energy, but even before that our guys were in a really good place.”

The production started in the first inning. Brooks Baldwin drove in Sosa with a two-out double. Baldwin then scored on Montgomery’s triple. Montgomery became the second Sox player since 2000 to triple for their first major-league hit. He joined Tyler Saldano, who accomplished the feat on July 11, 2015.

“He put some really good swings on pitches, quality at-bats,” Venable said. “Happy that he got his first knock.”

The Rockies scored twice in the bottom of the first, but the Sox responded with three in the second inning in the form of an RBI single by Tauchman and the home run by Sosa. All three runs came with two outs.

“The success today was just being patient as I’ve been the last couple of weeks,” Sosa said through an interpreter. “I was able to get a pitch that I wanted to hit.

“Just trying to slow the game down, be calm and when you have your pitch, be aggressive with your pitch.”

An RBI single by Josh Rojas — yes, with two outs — in the fifth stretched the lead to 6-2.

Sox starter Jonathan Cannon allowed two runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks in 5 1/3 innings for the win.

“(The Rockies were) really aggressive today, swung at a lot of pitches early in the count,” Cannon said. “We were able to take advantage of that.”

He displayed timely execution in the fifth after the Rockies placed runners on second and third with no outs. Hunter Goodman lined out to Montgomery, Jordan Beck popped out to Sosa at second base and Thairo Estrada grounded out to Montgomery.

Related Articles

Bobby Jenks, former Chicago White Sox All-Star pitcher and 2005 World Series champion, dies at 44

Shortstop Colson Montgomery joins the parade of Chicago White Sox prospects in the major leagues

Colson Montgomery’s incredible catch a ‘momentum changer’ in his ‘full-circle’ Chicago White Sox debut

Chicago White Sox fall to 31 games under .500 for the 1st time this season

<a class="article-title" href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/2025/07/04/chicago-white-sox-colorado-rockies-losses/" title="Chicago White Sox lost a record 121 games last season. In Raleigh, he played top-pair minutes with defensive partner Jaccob Slavin. In his first year with the Hurricanes, 2022-23, he totaled 61 points (18g/43a). This past season, only collecting 29 points (6g/23a), is tied for his worst in the last 10 seasons of his career.

Brent Burns is having a historically bad year on the powerplay. In his first appearance with the Colorado media, he touched on his excitement to learn from some of the talent in Denver while bringing experience of his own into the locker room.

I just want to come in and join the group to fit in… I just want to bring some energy, bring some fun, some experience. Obviously, there’s a lot of guys there that I can learn from… I think it’s always a big part of playing with different guys, everybody can learn from everybody. I’m sure for me, it’s going to be great and hopefully some of these guys will see some different things and can learn from me. I’m looking forward to being part of a special group.
- Burns on how he sees himself fitting into Colorado’s D-core.
With the Colorado media, Burns also had some great things to say about his time in Raleigh under former head coach Rod Brind’Amour, calling him special and going as far as to say, “I can’t speak highly enough about him.”

Brent Burns spoke at length about his experience under Rod Brind'Amour, playing next to Jaccob Slavin and his time in Raleigh:

"I think, for me, that was the hardest part about this. Of course, we want to win games, but sometimes in CONCACAF it’s not pretty, so you have to do the dirty things.”

Mexico is the defending champion and has nine titles to seven for the U.S. and one for Canada. A pro-Mexico crowd is expected at NRG Stadium.

Richards said the Americans have bonded during their month together, causing players to defend each other when opponents challenge them.

“We love each other as if we’re a big family, and if you have siblings you know that if anybody messes with your sibling, well, I guess for lack of a better word, you kind of have to kill them," he said Saturday. “You’re allowed to do whatever to your siblings, but nobody from the outside can.”

Missing many of its regular starters because of injuries, vacation and the Club World Cup, the No. 16 U.S managed five wins over relatively weak opponents and reached its first Gold Cup final since 2021. The meeting with 17th-ranked Mexico will be the last competitive match for both nations before they co-host next year's World Cup along with Canada.

“I think the team is going to be ready not only to fight on the pitch against players from Mexico with the difficult atmosphere on the stadium, on the crowd, but I think it’s good for us,” said Pochettino, who admired the energy-filled semifinal crowd in St. Louis that was 90% pro-Guatemala. “It’s good because I think it’s going to be maybe the last game that we are going to play under pressure, and to play under pressure is what we need.”

The U.S. advanced with victories over teams ranked No. 100 (Trinidad and Tobago), 58 (Saudi Arabia), 83, (Haiti), 54, (Costa Rica) and 106 (Guatemala), winning three times by one goal and once on penalty kicks. The only dominant performance was an opening 5-0 rout of T&T.

The Americans entered the Gold Cup with a four-game losing streak, their longest since 2007. Defender Tim Ream, at 37 the oldest player on the roster, said it took time for them to adjust to Pochettino and his assistants.

“This is a different atmosphere now,” he said. “This is different set of coaches, different ideas, different standards, different values, different everything. And it was a learning process, for sure.”

Pochettino is a former coach of Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain, where he guided Lionel Messi.

“From the outside looking in, they can be a little bit intimidating,” Richards said. “But then once you finally get to meet them, you understand that they’re all just big teddy bears and they all really care about family.”

Matt Freese has emerged during the Gold Cup to supplant Matt Turner for now as the starting goalkeeper.

“I think we’ve proved that we can play against some bigger opponents. I think we’ve proved that we surprise people,” he said. “We haven’t proved what we want to prove yet, and so the job is not finished.”

Ahead of the final, Pochettino gathered the players and staff for a motivational message,

“He said something about his dreams last night," midfielder Malik Tillman said, "and about his dream for tomorrow."

___

AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Associated Press<dc:publisher>Associated Press</dc:publisher>

Watch 76ers' VJ Edgecombe put on a show in his Summer League debut with 28 points

The No. 3 pick Edgecombe outdueled the No. 5 pick Ace Bailey at the Salt Lake Summer League.

Jun 25, 2025; Brooklyn, NY, USA; VJ Edgecombe arrives before the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft at Barclays Center. Expectations are still high for the QB, who is following in the footsteps of Super Bowl winners Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

Love is entering his third season as the Packers' starter, and there have been constant comparisons between him and others at the position. One of the most recent involved a debate stirred up involving his NFC North rival, the Chicago Bears' young star Caleb Williams.

The initial take arrived from Pro Football Focus and suggested that the ceiling for Williams is Love. However, a more recent take on Fox Sports' First Things First stirred up fans who blasted the critic for his remarks.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love.Eric Hartline-Imagn Images

While appearing on the show, FS1's Danny Jankins delivered a surprising take in which he suggested Williams is better than Love. Yes, that's what he said.

"How bout this? Caleb Williams...already better than Jordan Love. How bout that?" Parkins asked First Things First's Kevin Wildes and Chris Broussard.

"Jordan Love has played the majority of two seasons. Both of those seasons, double-digit interceptions," Parkins said, adding, "Caleb Williams played 17 games last year, had six [interceptions]."

Broussard and Wildes immediately disagreed with Parkins' take. However, he persisted, indicating that Williams "took too many sacks" and "the offensive line was playing guys who were on other teams' practice squads at the beginning of the year."

PFF's floor for Caleb Williams was "bust," which Parkins argued is "off the table."

"If you watched Caleb Williams, there's no earthly way you could believe that that guy is gonna bust," he said, referencing his impressive touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Broussard said that he doesn't think Williams will be a bust, but he needs to be "very good this year," and if he struggles this year, then "bust is on the table."

Parkins' remarks about Williams and Love stirred up plenty of fans who fired away at him in the YouTube video's comments.

"I am aware that the teams are different, but before we begin Jordan-love analogies, Caleb must qualify for the playoffs," one commenter wrote.

"Hard to listen to Parkins talk about football," another YouTube comment said.

"Danny is getting really good at the whole rage bait thing," one commenter suggested.

"Dude 11 interceptions is not even high what is Danny’s argument," a commenter asked.

Many commenters also mentioned that Parkins is from Chicago, which likely contributed to his suggestion that Williams is better than Love. Most likely, it was designed to grab attention, and it certainly did that, although many commenters seem to be calling for Nick Wright to return to the show ASAP.

Jordan Love successfully guided Green Bay to back-to-back postseason appearances as a starter. It's expected they'll contend for the NFC North division and a playoff spot once again behind a strong core of players.

Williams led the Bears to a 5-12 record in his rookie season. As he enters his sophomore season with the Chicago Bears, he'll need to prove his abilities and impact by guiding the team back to the playoffs.

<a desperately on the lookout for attacking options this summer and have been linked to numerous options such as Viktor Gyokeres and Ollie Watkins.

Osimhen is said to want a move to the Premier League and there have even been reports that United are his preferred destination.

The Nigerian is certainly not part of SSC Napoli boss Antonio Conte’s plan as he will be omitted from first team training when the Serie A champions return for pre-season work.

United are not the only team sniffing around Osimhen though and Juventus have also been in negotiations for the player.

Italian paper Corriere della Sera has reported that Juventus’ General Manager, Damien Comolli, has proposed a swap deal between Dusan Vlahovic and Osimhen.

The Serbian striker has so far rejected the chance to sign a new deal and is seemingly content to run down his contract and leave on a free next season.

It is stated in the report that, “Comolli has Napoli-owned striker Victor Osimhen at the top of his wish list: Juventus is reportedly trying to convince Gli Azzurri to start a negotiation that could bring the Nigerian to Turin.”

The outlet adds that, “among the hypotheses on the table” there was a swap deal with Vlahovic, but the plan “did not have a long life” for one vital reason.

The paper claims that Vlahovic “got in the way by immediately rejecting the Neapolitans.”

Therefore, if Juventus and Napoli are to find a solution, it will not be via a swap deal between the two strikers.

If United wish to get involved, they will likely have to act before the middle of July when Osimhen’s release clause will rise from the Athlon Sports.

Now that the dust has settled on the NFL Draft and we haven't discussed Shedeur Sanders' historic slide in a while, everyone involved is intent on focusing on the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns are focused on the quarterback battle involving Sanders.

Many have criticized Shedeur's Hall of Fame father, Deion, and his involvement in the pre-draft process with regard to Shedeur.

Now, Deshaun Watson's personal quarterback coach Quincy Avery is getting in on the opinion game as he appeared on the Maggie and Perloff show recently.

“My forecast is that at some point this year, it’s going to get really, really difficult and Deion Sanders is going to have to make a real decision,” Avery said. “Was he doing this the whole time to prop his son up and help him become this top-tier quarterback — which he did help him do? Or does he want to do this because he really cares about the kids?”

Earlier this offseason, Colin Cowherd likened Deion to a "Pageant Mom."

“Spend too much time in the sun and get burned,” Cowherd said. “Deion was in the sun. Deion spent too much time on television, talking. ... But I have said this over and over, and I will repeat it. Dads, stop talking. Nobody cares. Quarterback Dad has become Pageant Mom. It just wasn't to be, though, as the Fever gave up a six-point lead in the fourth quarter to the Los Angeles Sparks, who powered through to secure a crucial road win, 89-87.

Aliyah Boston (23 points, 12 rebounds) and Natasha Howard (21 points, nine rebounds) did all they could for the Fever in this one, but their combined effort still fell short against a determined Sparks side.

Shortly after the final buzzer, the Fever took to social media to issue a six-word statement on the loss.

"another chance at home on Wednesday," the team posted on X.

another chance at home on Wednesday. pic.twitter.com/Ab99Hw8OYB
— Indiana Fever (@IndianaFever) July 6, 2025

Based on this post, it appears that Indiana is determined to put this deflating loss behind them as quickly as possible. They have now set their sights on their next game, which comes in the form of another home matchup against the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday.

In the last meeting between these two teams, it was the Valkyries who secured an 88-77 win at Chase Center, so the Fever will want to get some revenge now that they're playing hosts.

Golden State Valkyries forward Kayla Thornton (5) drives against Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22).© Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images

A recent statement from former WNBA coach and ESPN analyst Carolyn Peck generated online buzz after she said that the Fever are "more dangerous" without Clark. This statement came amid Indiana's recent three-game winning streak, which included their WNBA Commissioner's Cup championship win on Tuesday against the Minnesota Lynx.

There's no denying, however, that Indiana would have benefitted from Clark's leadership and clutch play down the stretch on Saturday against L.A., which is precisely what was on the minds of more than a few supporters.

"They need Caitlin. That was always the first game and I was too shy for three months to actually come on court. My coach Julie [Hobbs] finally managed to get me to do it. I tried to run to the outside tramline, tripped over, burst into tears. Off I went, and I didn’t come back for a couple of months.”

It is a story that plenty of parents and children will relate to, with Hobbs, a former British No 1, eventually coaxing her back to the sport. Fast forward 17 years and you did not need long around a packed Court 16 on Saturday to feel the impact that Kartal is having. Fresh from three brilliant singles wins, she was in doubles action alongside her friend Jodie Burrage in front of a distinctly youthful audience.

Kartal has attracted a youthful following after a successful first week at Wimbledon - Getty Images/Rob Newell

Kartal, who is now 23 and the last remaining British woman in the singles draw, hopes that her story can particularly inspire girls who are shy about sport.

“My coach has a daughter and she was super shy, got into tennis and has changed like a completely different person,” she said. “She’s got so much more personality, she’s so much more talkative.” And is playing sport becoming cooler for girls? “I think it’s changing,” she says. “I think now a lot of girls are getting more comfortable with having more muscle on their body. I think that’s turning, which is obviously incredible.

“I don’t think anyone should feel like girls have to look a certain way. I think that’s changing in tennis as well. You look at the tennis players, everyone’s all different physiques and sizes and heights. So, it’s definitely getting more versatile. If I can inspire kids, whether that’s boys or girls, then I’m obviously doing something good.”

Kartal played football and cricket at a similar level to her tennis until she was 13 and is a self-confessed sports lover. “I was a little bit of a tomboy and super sporty,” she said. “I loved football. My school actually used to have a lot of girls football and I used to go to my local park with my dad. In cricket I was always the batter and just launching [the ball] as far as I could.”

Saturday’s doubles might not have gone to plan – Kartal and Burrage were beaten in straight sets – but her partner could sense the buzz. Kartal had been informed that she would be first up on Centre Court at 1.30pm on Sunday against the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova just before stepping on court with Burrage.

“Her story shows there’s not one way to do what we do – but multiple ways,” said Burrage. “She has done incredible – and she is going to go a lot higher. For everyone out there, regardless of where you are from, you can do it if you put your mind to it – especially like this chick here. That’s the moral of this story.”

Kartal’s ranking has risen from 864 in 2022 to the world’s top 50 – she will overtake Emma Raducanu as the British No 2 once Wimbledon is done and dusted – and Burrage clearly does not think the story will end against Pavlyuchenkova. “I’ve got full belief,” she said.

Kartal goes into the match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in confident mood - Eddie Mulholland for The Telegraph

There certainly seems little chance of the attention going to Kartal’s head. She was six when she made that first trip to a tennis club following an invitation from a tennis official who had eaten at one of her father’s two Turkish restaurants. And, while she was competitive against players like Emma Raducana through the British junior rankings, has largely progressed in senior tennis away from the limelight.

Kartal’s social media remains largely fixated with animals or food and, perhaps most telling of all, she has resisted inevitable pressure to change a coaching team that, as well as Hobbs, also still includes Ben and Martin Reeves from her original club in Brighton.

“I was hearing people saying, you know, ‘Do you think you should get a coach that has already done that?’ But I didn’t want that. If I can have a coach that can take me from a six-year-old to the WTA Tour, I think that’s obviously good enough. We just learned together. It’s kind of doing this crazy thing together.

Kartal did find herself being recognised during a “tricky” trip to the shops near Wimbledon on Friday night and her phone has been flooded with suggestions for her next tattoo. They have included one of Centre Court itself, a vintage polo shirt in recognition of her distinctive Adidas playing top and, from Burrage, an image of fire and ice. “I actually like that,” she said.

Among other things, Kartal is known for her tattoos - Eddie Mulholland for The Telegraph

Fans are now suggesting what tattoo Kartal gets next - Eddie Mulholland for The Telegraph

She has, until now, remained a member of the same no-thrills High Street gym in Brighton, although wonders if she may now have to review that arrangement. “It was getting a bit tricky prior [to Wimbledon]. But to be honest they were actually pretty respectful there [at the gym]. They would just say hello and then just let me get on with it. So maybe I’ll have to test that when I’m back. I go to the gym and just kind of have a bit of ‘me time’, stick my headphones in and just forget about the world.

“People think I don’t like [being in the spotlight], because I have gone under the radar my whole life but I don’t have an issue with being in the spotlight or not being in the spotlight. I’ll take it as a compliment.”

Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. The Sunday Telegraph covers the story with its main image, showing Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson - Liverpool teammates of Jota - leading mourners in Portugal. Jota, 28, was laid to rest alongside his brother, Silva, 25, after they died in a car crash on Thursday. Leading the front page is the Conservatives' attempt to draw a "clear dividing line" with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Reform's Nigel Farage on welfare. "Axe sickness benefits for foreigners, Tories urge," the paper declares, reporting that the party has called on the Labour government to restrict personal independence payments (Pips) and sickness top-ups to Universal Credit to UK citizens only. They were up by 17 at the start of the fourth quarter, but it became 99-96 with over two minutes left.

Vujacic's foul appeared to ignite the Suns, especially Dragic. The Dragon scored eight in the final frame, second only to Amar'e Stoudemire, who had 12. His final bucket pushed Phoenix past the double-digit barrier, 91-82, and the dime to Amar'e Stoudemire with six minutes remaining made it 95-90.

Sasha, meanwhile, did nothing positive of note. The Machine subbed in for Ron Artest at the tail end of the third quarter with the Lakers up by 18, 85-67. When Bryant took him out with 9:42 left, the score was 93-82. During that stretch, Vuajcic was responsible for a flagrant foul, an offensive foul, and a kickball violation.

It was obviously a big deal, but Vujacic later downplayed his spat with his fellow Slovenian.

"My countryman? Oh, the kid on the other team?" Vujacic said, referring to Dragic. "I don't think I'm fighting my countryman. I'm playing good defense. You got to exploit the weaknesses of your opponent and I think that if that's Nash, if that's Grant Hill, if that's Barbosa, whoever that is, you got to exploit their weaknesses. He's still young and he's learning, so a little bit of pressure helps."

It was safe to say the ploy did not work. Dragic ended up playing his best game of the series to give the Suns a puncher's chance.

Meanwhile, Sasha feigned innocence and believed the flagrant foul was unwarranted.

"I don't know why I got a technical foul to be honest with you," Vujacic stated. "He pushed me, but I didn't want to react … I've been involved in playoffs for a long time, I didn't [push him], go check."

Related: "God, I hope I don't get into this game. Bryant poured 11 points in the fourth, including two impossible shots over Grant Hill to seal the game. As sensational as his performance was, the L.A. icon was still his own harshest critic.

"I did pretty good. I missed a couple of easy ones there to start in the middle of the fourth quarter, but I was able to collect myself and knock down some big shots," Bryant told Sager.

Kobe was practically unstoppable throughout the six-game series, as Goran himself remembered. He played such a brilliant series that his least efficient shooting game was a near-triple-double in Game 5. While Bryant finished with 30/11/9 and four blocks, he missed 10 of his 17 shots in the second half and airballed the potential game-winner.

Still, even on that off-shooting night, Bryant was the constant. He needed just 99 pitches to tie his season-high for innings.

Matt Brash pitched the eighth, and Andres Munoz got the last three outs for his 20th save.

Pirates starter Mike Burrows gave up three hits and walked four while striking out six in five innings.

Key moment

Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez raced to and collided with the wall in left-center field to take extra bases away from McCutchen.

Key stat

Castillo went at least seven innings for the 20th time in 92 starts with the Mariners.

He never won a scoring title in his career and didn't manage to shoot 50% from the field in any of his 19 seasons either.

So, despite having that all-around game, Pierce wasn't an all-time great volume scorer and wasn't very efficient either. At the end of the day, that's what really matters.

Jordan, for example, won a record 10 scoring titles during his storied career and shot over 50% from the field in six seasons. Durant, meanwhile, has won four scoring titles and has failed to shoot over 50% from the field in just five seasons in a career that has spanned nearly two decades.

Even James, whom Pierce dismissed, has gone down as a better scorer than him. The 21-time All-Star is the NBA's all-time leading scorer and has averaged at least 25 points in 20 seasons. He has also shot at least 50% from the field in 14 of his 22 seasons.

Ultimately, it's your production that matters. This conversation is similar to the one about who has the better "bag?" James dismissed the "no bag" talk recently by hilariously stating he has 50 billion points. This year is all about building the right foundation and creating a culture that, in a few years, will be key in the franchise finally seeing some success.

To do that, you need a group of players to build around and to help bring that vision to life. For Bleacher Report, the promising building block New York and Glenn have is Garrett Wilson.

"For now, Garrett Wilson is still on his rookie deal, though the New York Jets could give him a pay raise within the next few months," Bleacher Report's Moe Moton writes. "He's earned it.

"Wilson will reunite with his former Ohio State teammate, Justin Fields, who signed a two-year deal with the Jets. If they can rekindle chemistry from their collegiate years, Wilson could post receiving numbers that are indicative of his true production ceiling."

New York Jets' Garrett Wilson and Allen LazardVincent Carchietta - Imagn Images

That's an easy choice, right? We think so, although Sauce Gardner is another great option, but given how little else the offense has outside of Wilson (maybe Breece Hall) in terms of genuine firepower, nailing your colors to Wilson's mast is smart business.

Of course, what else is smart is locking down No. 5 to a long-term contract, something that is thought to be in the works this offseason, and while we aren't sure of the timeline, there is hope that the two sides will come together and agree on something.

The Jets, at this stage of yet another rebuild, can't afford to lose someone who could easily be seen as their best player... especially when they are viewed as a foundational building block.

Related: Justin Fields' Jets Weapons Receive Horrifying Ranking

Related: Jets Urged To Trade for 15-TD Receiver from NFC Contender

This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 6, 2025, where it first appeared.

Athlon Sports<dc:publisher>Athlon Sports</dc:publisher>

Magnitude Returns In Style With Big Iowa Derby Win; Quickick Up In Last Jump In Oaks

Steve Asmussen gets fifth Iowa Derby win with front-end victory while Tom Amoss-trained filly takes Oaks with last-to-first rally

Magnitude Returns In Style With Big Iowa Derby Win; Quickick Up In Last Jump In Oaks originally appeared on Paulick Report.

Sidelined since February after undergoing surgery to remove an ankle chip, Winchell Thoroughbreds' Magnitude toyed with his five rivals in Saturday's $250,000 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa, running off to a 9 1/4-length front-end victory under Ben Curtis for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Among the top Triple Crown contenders following a similar runaway win in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds Feb. 15, Magnitude went to the sidelines after that victory, undergoing successful surgery to remove the chip. After returning to training and recording his first breeze on May 15, he was the easiest kind of winner in the Iowa Derby, covering the 1 1/16 miles on a track rated "good" in 1:42.26 after setting fractions of :23.29 for the opening quarter mile, :46.66 for the half, 1:10.94 for six furlongs, and 1:36.01 for a mile.

Magnitude, a 3-year-old colt by Not This Time out of Rockaholic, by Bernardini, was bred in Kentucky by Ron Stolich and purchased for $450,000 from the Gainesway consignment at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Winning for the fourth time in eight career starts, Magnitude paid $3.40 as the odds-on favorite, giving Asmussen his fifth Iowa Derby win.

Itsmybirthday finished a distant second, 4 1/4 lengths to the good of Mister Omaha in third. Maverama, Mickswagger, and Authentic Gallop completed the order of finish.

Big Truzz, double-entered in this race and the Indiana Derby (where he finished sixth), was scratched.

Quickick's Stretch Rally Earns Oaks Victory

Unlike the Iowa Derby, where Magnitude was never headed on the front end, Greg Tramontin's Greenwell Thoroughbreds' Quickick rallied from last to win the $225,000 Iowa Oaks by a nose over Sayucan, who led until the very last jump. It was 13 lengths back to Paradise City in third, followed by Legal Empress, Yes Ma'am, A Thousand Miles, Nilo's Rose, and Two Bar.

Ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr. for trainer Tom Amoss, Quickick was sent away the even-money favorite against seven other 3-year-old fillies after running in graded stakes in her last six races. While not winning any of those contests, the daughter of McKinzie finished second behind eventual champion Immersive in the G1 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland last fall and third to Immersive in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She came into the Iowa Oaks off a sixth-place effort over a sloppy track in the G1 Acorn on June 6.

The start of the Oaks was delayed when 94-1 outsider Kerry's Kiss became fractious after the field was loaded in the gate. She was scratched, with the remainder of the field unloaded while officials reset the numbers in the stalls. Heavenly Sunset from the Brad Cox barn was scratched earlier.

When the gates opened and rain beginning to fall, Sayucan went to the lead under Elvin Gonzalez under pressure early from A Thousand Miles. After an opening quarter-mile in :23.40 and a half in :47.50, Sayucan began to open up on the field, and after six furlongs in 1:12.70 was about five lengths in front.

Quickick, last early, began to move on the far turn and was sent five wide by Hernandez turning into the stretch. Sayucan had what appeared to be an insurmountable six-length lead with a furlong to run, but Hernandez kept to his task aboard Quickick, winning by the narrowest of margins in the final stride.

She paid $4.20 to win. The Iowa Oaks was Quickick's second victory from nine starts, her previous win being a Saratoga maiden special weight race last year.

Bred by Gainesway and Whisper Hill Farm, Quickick was purchased by Tramontin for $550,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Tramontin was partners with Maggi Moss in G1 Woody Stephens winner No Parole, also trained by Amoss. This was the second Iowa Oaks win for Amoss, who took the 2006 running with Baghdaria.

Showers turned to a torrential downpour after the Iowa Oaks that led to a lengthy weather delay before the next race on the track's annual Festival of Racing card.

This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Jul 6, 2025, where it first appeared.

Paulick Report<dc:publisher>Paulick Report</dc:publisher>

Indiana Fever Player on Temporary Leave Reacts to New Post From WNBA Team

Indiana Fever players takes to social media.

Indiana Fever Player on Temporary Leave Reacts to New Post From WNBA Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Indiana Fever have been highly successful as of late, heading into a matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks.

Indiana has won three straight games, defeating the Minnesota Lynx in the Commissioner's Cup Championship during their run.

While the Fever await the return of their biggest star, Caitlin Clark, who is currently working through a groin injury, they are also waiting for Damiris Dantas to return to the lineup.

Dantas is currently playing overseas with the Brazilian national team. That run came to an end on Saturday, though, after the Fever gave up another fourth-quarter lead en route to their ninth loss of the season.

Caitlin Clark watched this game from the bench again as the newly crowned WNBA All-Star Game captain sat out for a fifth consecutive game with a lingering groin injury.
