2025 Open Championship: Scottie Scheffler holds commanding four-shot lead entering final round

It sure does look like Scottie Scheffler is going to win The Open on Sunday.

It is Scottie Scheffler’s world and we are all just living in it.

Scheffler, the top-ranked player in the world and PGA Championship winner this season, took the solo lead after the second round of play at this year’s Open Championship. It looked then like the clouds of inevitability were encircling Royal Portrush.

If that was the moment the clouds showed up then Saturday was when the rain started and did not stop. As the third round of play concluded Scheffler had amassed a four-shot lead over the field which suggests his hoisting the Claret Jug on Sunday evening is more of an inevitability than anything.

Scottie Scheffler holds the 54-hole lead/co-lead for the 18th time on the PGA TOUR and is 11-for-17 to date converting to victory, including his last seven attempts. He is 3-for-3 in majors with the 54-hole lead/co-lead.
— PGA TOUR Communications (@PGATOURComms) July 19, 2025

To date all three of Scheffler’s major championships (he has two Masters wins on top of this season’s PGA in case anyone forgot) began with him ending his Saturday rounds as the 54-hole leader. This does not exactly bode well for the non-Scheffler players in Northern Ireland.

It is preposterous how inevitable Scheffler’s victory feels, but that is the type of player he continues to prove himself to be. You may as well start talking about him as someone with only a U.S. Open left to claim for the career grand slam because that is what we are looking to be in for on Sunday.

Is Scottie Scheffler (-14) more likely to blow his 4-shot lead on Sunday or break The Open scoring record to par of -20?
— Jeff Eisenband (@JeffEisenband) July 19, 2025

Forget the world of golf at this point. Is there anything or anyone more inevitable than Scottie Scheffler across sports at large? We are a week removed from Carlos Alcaraz finally falling at Wimbledon and five months from the Kansas City Chiefs getting blown out in the Super Bowl. What are the contenders at this point?

To be clear we are talking about golf and specifically the Open Championship where anything is possible. But if anyone is proving to be the exception to the rule over and over again it is Scottie Scheffler.

We knew that when the week started and still talked ourselves into other possibilities.

2025 Open Championship: Rory McIlroy had an impossible double-ball moment you have to see

Rory McIlroy had an all-time moment on Saturday at Royal Portrush.

You absolutely never know what the Open Championship is going to give you.

We found this lesson out once again during Saturday’s round at Royal Portrush. Rory McIlroy, 6-under at the time, was doing his best to chase down Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick and hit his approach shot on number 11. It was then that things got wild.

Watch Rory’s shot. You are not seeing things. As his ball takes flight, another emerges from the ground and rises into the air. For real.

Watch it. Watch it again. pic.twitter.com/I48KVCk80b
— The Open (@TheOpen) July 19, 2025

Clearly a ball happened to be plugged underneath where Rory hit his shot and the shot he created forced it to rise. In all of your time watching golf though... have you ever seen this?

The sheer odds of this happening are insane if we really think about them. Rory’s ball had to land (almost) exactly where another one did at some point in time and hid underneath the ground. He then had to hit a powerful enough shot (normal for him) to cause what we saw.

Unfortunately the situation caused Rory’s approach to fall short and he wound up bogeying the hole. Amazingly, poetically, he responded immediately by making an eagle on the 12th to ignite the Irish crowd and put himself in the mix as the weekend continues to work.

John Parry had an insane ace on 13 at Royal Portrush on Saturday.

You better not blink during the Open Championship.

Thrills await with each and every single shot of golf and such was the case early (for those watching on the United States side of things) on Saturday.

John Parry, 1-under at the time, hit his tee shot on the par-3 13th hole and did not need to grab his putter after. Ace!

The 13th at Royal Portrush, Feather Bed, is 199 yards in total and has typically played true to its par. Emiliano Grillo had an opening round ace there when the Open was last held at the venue in 2019 and we can now add John Parry’s name to that list.

It is moments like these that make this specific tournament so incredible. For one moment there is a unified celebration where everyone is acknowledging that they just saw something special and incredible.

Kudos to John Parry for the dunk!

Ronald Acuña Jr. made MLB’s throw of the year from deep right field

Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. delivered one of the best throws you will ever see, in any sport, against the Yankees

A host of details go into an outfielder’s ability to throw out a runner tagging up on a fly ball. Those details begin with getting a good read on the ball off the bat, so the outfielder can settle into position under the fly ball as it drops from the sky. You’ll want to get “behind the ball” as it comes down, so you can gain some forward momentum into the throw. You’ll also want to have your throwing leg back and your glove leg in front at the catch, so you can transition into the throw quickly using a “pro-step” and minimize any movement as a baserunner gains two steps for every wasted step by a fielder.

Or you could just have an absolute howitzer for an arm.

The latter is the approach taken by Ronald Acuña Jr. on Friday night, as the Atlanta Braves outfielder delivered what might just be the best throw you will ever see, regardless of sport.

With the Braves holding a 3-0 lead over the visiting New York Yankees in the third inning last night, the visitors were threatening. New York had runners on first and second with just one out, and Cody Bellinger was at the dish.

Bellinger worked the count to 2-2, fouling off a few tough pitches from Spencer Strider, before lifting a deep fly ball to right field off a slider down-and-in. Acuña settled under the fly ball on the warning track near the foul line, caught it over his shoulder, and then, without any movement at all, simply unleashed an absolute rocket into third base as New York’s Jorbit Vivas was tagging up from second:

One of the greatest throws you will EVER see @Delta | @ronaldacunajr24 pic.twitter.com/eD5ymYXpXt
— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) July 19, 2025

Okay.

As someone paid to describe sporting moments, I am at a loss to describe this throw beyond saying THIS IS MIND-BLOWING. Acuña makes this throw without a crow-hop or a pro-step; he simply catches the ball over his shoulder, pivots, and throws a supersonic missile into third baseman Nacho Alvarez Jr. And some credit goes to Alvarez who sold the play at the end, waiting until the last possible moment to get his glove out to snare this frozen rope from Acuña.

Leaving Vivas, and the rest of us, absolutely stunned.

And let’s not forget that this throw comes in from deep right field IN THE AIR. At one point, as this baseball version of a Concorde travels over second base, it seems as if the ball is still rising, before dropping right into Alvarez’s glove for the stunning double play to end the inning.

You can watch baseball ... heck, you can watch every sport imaginable, for the next ten years and not see a better throw.

Oh and Acuña also went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple.

Not a bad night at the ballpark.
