Quite strange.

About 'clean metadata', I have just noticed that there is 2 locations for that, in the browser and in the viewer. The browser one is not available for TIF, PNG and JXL, but available for JPG, where cleaning is done losslessly. The viewer one is available for all these formats (including JXL) and does the work, even if there is no metadata to clean, and involves re-compressing the file to save it, which is problematic for lossy format such as JPG and JXL. At least for JPG there is the browser's clean that can be used losslessly, but not for JXL

About geolocation,, i attach a JXL file generated by batch-convert of XnViewMP from a TIF file with "preserve metadata" unchecked. hi xnview team,

I have the following problem when importing RAW and JPG files into XnViewMP 1.8.8:

Starting point:
Files were rated, tagged and commented with a separate tool (F-Stoppapp for Android)
The information was stored by the tool both in the JPG file and in an XMP file (for RAW and JPG).

Problem:
The categories assigned by me are not processed as desired in XnViewMP

Case 1: The category is already known in XnViewMP and created hierarchically (Photography|Plants|Tree). The category was stored exactly in the tool and assigned to the RAW/JPG file. Although the corresponding settings were made in the XnViewMP setup (automatic parent category), only the category “Tree” is imported, but not the parent structure.

Case 2: The category is not known in XnViewMP. The category was created in the tool (Photography|Plants|Flower) and assigned to the RAW/JPG file. During import, a new category “Flower” is created in XnViewMP, but not under the existing structure Photography|Plants| but under a new structure Plants|. The topmost structure “Photography” was not taken into account.

When I look at the file info, I see the category I entered under xmp, dc, subject[1].

In the RAW/JPG files associated sidecar files (.xmp) my categories are entered as follows:
...
<dc:subject>
<rdf:Bag>
<rdf:li>Photographs|Plants|Tree
</rdf:Bag>
</dc:subject>
...

What do I have to do so that the categories assigned to the photos, including the default parent category, are correctly adopted by XnViewMP?

Regards, Otrag

Statistics: Posted by OTRAG — Fri May 09, 2025 1:26 pm

I made some additional tests. There is a strange interaction between format and metadata (including GPS data but not limited to them)

1) I initially though that there was a specific issue with JXL files for "clean metadada" which is not available (greyed) for such files, but I have just noticed that it is also not available for TIF and PNG (works fine for JPG; I did not test for other formats)

2) If the JXL file is generated (batch convert) from a non-geotagged (but with some other exif metadada) TIF or PNG file with "preserve metadata', it is then indeed possible to add geolocation later to the JXL file. In contrast, if the JXL file was generated with "preserve metadata" unchecked, geotagging becomes impossible (but seems possible: values can be entered, one can click on "write", but nothing is written)

hope this helps
simon
Statistics: Posted by simon — Fri May 09, 2025 9:59 am
