Cultural Places to Visit in Cebu City Magellan’s Cross. This cross was planted by Ferdinand Magellan in the shore of Cebu when he arrived in the Philippines in 1521. The cross today is enclosed in a glass case, and is open for viewing in downtown Cebu. Fort San Pedro. This is a triangular military defense structure built by the Spanish Government. It is now a museum where legacies of that era could be found inside, including documents, paintings, and weapons for war. Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. This church was built in the 16th century supposedly on the spot where Spanish explorers led by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi found a sculpture of the Santo Niño, the same one given by Magellan in the 1500s to Queen Juana as a sign of friendship between their tribe and Spain. The Santo Niño is honored annually every third Sunday of January in a festival called the Sinulog. Museo Sugbo. This is the old Cebu provincial detention and rehabilitation center (the current one is famous worldwide for the dancing inmates of Cebu). It has been converted to a museum showcasing the four major eras shaping Cebu to what it has become now. Waterfalls and Eco-Tourism in Cebu The Bugasok Falls in Argao is well known for its beauty. Nature lovers can choose to take the 6-hour trek, or hire local transportation called the habal-habal (motorcycle). Argao is a two-hour bus ride from Cebu City. Another natural wonder is the Mantayupan Falls in Campangga, Barili which also serves as a hydroelectric plant for the town. It is the highest waterfalls in the province and it is only an hour and a half from Cebu. Kawasan Waterfalls is another very popular destination for nature lovers. Located in a small village of Badian, three hours from Cebu, visitors still have to trek for 20 to 30 minutes before reaching the falls. The terrain however, has some very nice views, and well worth the walk. What makes it different is that visitors can actually go under the falls by riding a bamboo raft. For the eco-tourists, the Kan-irag Nature Park is the perfect place to visit. It is a 71 hectare eco-tourism park with indigenous trees, flowers, and plants. It had been previously a bald spot on the mountain, until a big conglomerate undertook its development to become a functioning watershed and a natural laboratory with native bird species and various fauna and flora. Beaches, Diving, and Snorkeling in Cebu Cebu, however, is best known for its beaches. Approximately four to five hours from the city is Bantayan Island. Called the Island Paradise of the Philippines, it attracts a lot of tourists, local and foreign alike. The clear blue waters and the magnificent coral reefs are best for diving and snorkeling. At night, the place is also filled with music from bars suitable for group outings. Another popular island off Cebu is Malapascua, which is very near Bantayan Island. Malapascua is best known for its diving spots comparable to the reefs of Bantayan, and divers have seen thresher sharks and manta rays here, among other marine life. For world-class divers, Moalboal is the place to go. It is best as well for snorkeling and freediving. The drop off is near the shore and it goes down up to 40 meters. Moalboal is located in the southern part of Cebu, about 4 hours from the city. It is a relaxed and serene town, with none of the party atmosphere the other places have. Night time entertainment is laid back and quiet. It is also possible to camp out in a tent in the shores of Moalboal. Traveling around Cebu City and the neighboring islands is cheap. Food is fresh and delicious, and one can find affordable accommodations as well that would fit any budget. Truly, with all its splendors, Cebu deserves to be called a queen, and one visit is never enough. Have you been to Cebu? Which places did you visit?

The Philippines is an archipelagic country that consists of 7, 000 islands and has a lot to offer when it comes to culture, sun, sea, beach and adventure. Here are the top 7 places to visit in the Philippines when you are visiting the country. The Batad (Banaue) rice terraces in Luzon Mountain terracing with the cultivation of rice varieties is practiced throughout the whole region of Pacific Asia. In the Philippines they have the most unique terraces! The Cordillera terraces in Northern Luzon are said to be the most unique in the world. Some people call these rice terraces the “stairways to Heaven”, or “the eighth world miracle”. They are 20, 000 years old The indigenous mountain people are still living and working as it was in the past. The irrigation system based on the efficient use of the mountain water resources, is still the same as it was in the beginning of the formation of the terraces. The landscapes in the regions of Bontoc and Ifugao attract a lot of tourists. Not only the famous rice terraces, but also the indigenous people with their still traditional way of living, are main destinations for tourists when they make a trip through the Luzon island Tappiya waterfalls At the same place as the rice terraces are the Tappiya Waterfalls. They are definitely worth visiting after an exhaustive day of hiking over the terraces, take a refreshing swim in the basin and just enjoy the stunning view. You find both the waterfalls and the seclusive pool, hidden and well secluded at the back of the high-rising Batad rice terraces, To reach the falls you will go down the mountain via steep stairs. The water is cool and refreshing especially after the long walk. Beware of the current! You can take a dip and be refreshed in the water that gushes down to a large pool. There is a nipa hut overlooking the falls. Make sure you hire a local guide, you will not get lost and you help generate income for the locals. Guide fees are around 500 pesos ($12.00) they will take you both to the Water Falls and the Old Village. Puerto Princesa Also called ‘a city in the forest’. Puerto Princesa city’s attractions have much to do with its natural wonders and commitment to the environment. In fact, it’s been named the Philippines’ cleanest and greenest city, and has been internationally recognized for environmental excellence. The city in the forest is famous because of its subterranean river (underground river), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The 8.2-kilometer river, said to be the longest navigable underground river in the world, winds its way underneath a mountain range, through the St. Paul Underground River Cave, and then goes out into the South China Sea. The journey through the cave system alone is 24 kilometers long. The town of Vigan Vigan is a centuries old town that was settled and founded by Juan de Salcedo in 1572. Vigan has a unique mixture of Asian building design and Spanish colonial architecture and planning. It is a World Heritage Site, and one of the few Hispanic towns left in the Philippines. The ideal place to shop for souvenirs. Beaches An archipelagic country such as the Philippines never runs out of beaches. No wonder the Philippines have one of the longest coastlines in Asia. Most beaches have fine sand and there is a crystal clear sea. Boracay has one of the most famous beaches in the Philippines, it has a fine white-sand beach where you can enjoy beach massages, and where you can have a go at watersports such as scuba diving, snorkeling and kite surfing in the crystal clear water. Moreover, Boracay has a pleasant nightlife with several bars, clubs and restaurants. El Nido on the island of Palawan, also known as “the Island of the Gods”, is an upcoming tourist area but still less developed than Boracay, you can escape city life here. If you are looking for peace, El Nido is a great place to visit. It can be reached by ferry or plane from Manila. Are you into (kite)surfing you should go to Pagudpud in Luzon, it has strong winds and waves that can be compared to Hawaii. Chocolate Hills – Bohol The Chocolate Hills are a geological formation in Bohol Province. There are at least 1, 260 hills but there may be as many as 1, 776 hills spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometres. They are covered in green grass that turns brown (like chocolate) during the dry season, this is where the name ‘Chocolate Hills’ comes from. Mount Mayon Mount Mayon (Mayon Volcano) sits in a national park and is renowned for being a “perfect cone volcano”. It is the most active volcano in the Philippines. The volcano rises 2, 400 metres above sea level, and you can climb it. It appears to be a very photogenic scenery.

With the exception of parts of western Mindanao in the south of the country, Philippines is generally a safe travel destination, provided one is careful. WHEN YOU ARRIVE... When you arrive by air, there will (at least at Manila NAIA) be a bank between immigration and customs or after both. Obtain a small supply of low value P20 and P50 notes, as these are invaluable for tips and taxis. Hire a yellow taxi (P70 flagfall) to get to Manila (Ermita or Malate - Manila Bay area), Makati, Quezon City, Ortigas Center, Fort Bonifacio Global City (Taguig), Pasay City for Mall of Asia or any other metropolitan destination. Most drivers are pretty good: if yours is not, keep the slip you received when you stood in the taxi line and report the driver. TAXIS AT MANILA NAIA AIRPORT - There are 3 ways of taking a taxi from Manila airport 1) Most expensive - Take the white pre paid cab. First line on the right of exit. A trip to Makati or Ermita will cost you 500-600 pesos 2) Medium expensive - Take the yellow Airport taxi - Second line on far right side of exit. A trip to Makati will cost you 200-250 pesos. 3) Take the escalator to the upper Departure level of the airport (4th floor) and exit. Join the line for the normal white coloured regular taxis. This is the cheapest and will cost you 160 pesos to Makati. Always keep all taxi doors locked. If drivers refuse to switch on the meter, bail out and catch another taxi. This is a common ploy taxi drivers in Manila indulge in with foreigners. MONEY CHANGERS Changing USD, AUD, EU money and currency notes of other countries is very easy all over Philippines. The best rates are available at smaller private money changers in shopping malls like Robinsons, Greenbelt, etc. The worst rates are given at hotels, airports and banks. Some money changers suggested by TA members are - Edzen (0800 - 0200 daily), in A. Mabini Street, about 10 minutes' walk from Robinsons Place Mall in Ermita. Sheena moneychanger is associated with Edzen. LOCAL TRANSPORT (See the Internal transport page for better details and travel maps) Manila's three line LRT/ MRT elevated railways are a travel bargain at P12 to P15 a trip. While they don't go everywhere, an indirect trip via Taft and EDSA stations (connecion is via an overhead footbridge then through Metropoint Mall) is a good way to avoid a taxi clogged in slow traffic. Philippine National Railways has one surface rail line between Tutuban Center and Alabang. Trains run half hourly during peak periods, but otherwise hourly. As of September 2014, the rail line to Naga / Legaspi has been closed for more than 12 months due to required bridge repairs. It does not appear that PNR has the necessary funding.

I've been to the Philippines 8 times already, and I’ve spent in total more than a year there. Ever since my first visit I could not stop returning, year after year. This place simply blew my mind. Traveler and blogger Sabrina Iovino A week ago I went through my +50, 000 images from the Philippines. Once again I realized that there are so many amazing places to visit. Many of these photos I've never shared. And sharing is caring, right? Whenever I meet travelers, I encourage them to go to Philippines, because for some reasons, people are still hesitant and stick to the ordinary "Thailand-Laos-Cambodia-Vietnam Route." Here’s why you shouldn’t miss out on such an amazing country: 1. Postcard-perfect beaches All photos provided by Sabrina Iovino The beaches are without a doubt one of the most convincing reasons why you should visit the Philippines in 2015. With a coastline of more than 36, 000 km you can expect some of the most beautiful and picturesque beaches in the world. (READ: Head to 'Borawan' and these 5 unspoiled PH beaches) Here are some of my favorite beaches in the Philippines: Bounty Beach, Malapascua (picture above) Calitang Beach, El Nido Daku Island, Siargao Paliton Beach, Siquijor Guyam Island, Siargao Sugar Beach, Bantayan 2. Colorful, meaningful festivals Get a glimpse of Philippines' culture: many feature colorful costumes, painted bodies and crazy beautiful dance performances – you can't leave the Philippines without seeing one of their cultural or indigenous fiestas! Mark your calendars, here are just some of the popular festivals in the Philippines for 2015: Moriones, Marinduque (March/April) World Costume, Vigan (April) Sandugo, Bohol (July) 3. The beauty of Palawan will leave you speechless 4. The Banaue Rice Terraces It's a long 6-hour scenic bus ride from Manila up to the mountains, but when you reach Banaue, you know it was totally worth the trip! This is often referred as the 8th wonder of the world. For an unforgettable trekking experience, I suggest you to take a hike through the rice paddies. The scenery is out of this world. 5. The Hanging Coffins in Sagada If you make it to Banaue (above), don't go back without visiting Sagada. There are many things to do in Sagada, like exploring caves or swimming in waterfalls. I found one thing in particular that caught my attention – hanging coffins, tied and nailed to a cliff. (READ: 8 cool-weather PH destinations) I asked some locals about this funeral practice and they told me that old people do not like to be buried in the ground. Also, the higher they would tie the coffin on the cliff, the closer they'll come to the sky. (READ: Meeting Sagada's mother figure) 6. Snorkel with the turtles in Apo Island Apo Island is a tiny volcanic island, located in Negros. The underwater life in Apo Island is extraordinary and one of the world's best marine sanctuaries. The island is surrounded by colorful corals, hundreds species of fish and giant sea tortoises. (READ: Under the PH seas) I had a wonderful snorkel experience there, swimming with 5-10 turtles. It's truly fascinating to watch them swimming and eating, they're incredibly gorgeous. 7. Colorful sunsets I have seen the most gorgeous sunsets in the Philippines. The combination of the sea, the mountains and the reflections on the water leads to spectacular sunsets in all colors - from yellow, orange to red, pink and purple. Expect to see the best sunsets from the islands. No day goes by without seeing another phenomenal sunset.

Beach bummers are perpetually searching for the perfect beach to loaf around. What makes the beach perfect? Well, that can be vary from one person to the other. Some prefer beach with a long stretch of powdery white sand and a crystal clear water. While other prefer a secluded/virgin beach (no any form establishment) where you can do anything you wanted to without worrying that somebody or someone is looking at you. With those in mind, I have here listed the top 10 best beaches in Cebu. This list is in no particular order. 1. Santiago Beach The vast fine sands of Camotes Island that stretches for about 100 meters during low tide entices beach bummers in visiting Santiago White Beach. This gorgeous beach is located in San Francisco Camotes, Island about 30 minutes from Consuelo port. There are huts/cottages that can be rented for as low as 500 pesos for an overnight stay. The only downside in Camotes Island is the schedule brownout and low signal coverage. Nevertheless, Santiago White Beach is still one of the best beaches Cebu should be proud of. 2. Malapascua Island Malapascua Island is the mecca of both foreign and local diving enthusiasts aiming to have a close encounter with thresher sharks. This is the only place in Cebu, perhaps the whole world that guarantee shark sighting usually before the crack of dawn. Also, Malapascua Island has one of the richest marine life in the country. This island is located in Northern Cebu, roughly four hours from Cebu North Bus Terminal. 3. Sugar Beach Bantayan Sugar Beach in Santa Fe, Bantayan is the most favorited destination during Holy Week. The beauty of Sugar Beach is enhanced by the growing coconut trees scattered around the shore. Other interesting activities include island hopping, snorkeling, biking, and pigging out their sumptuous sea foods. Sugar Beach is just around 10 minutes from Bantayn Port. Accommodations here are the cheapest and camping is allowed with a minimum fee of 100 pesos. 4. Tingko Beach Another gorgeous beach in Cebu that started to gain prominence is Tingko Beach of Alcoy, Cebu. This is the perfect place for beach goers who want to experience a short breather without having to shell out cash from your pockets. Alcoy is located in the southern part of Cebu, about two to three hours from the city. A beach bum can expect a crystal clear water and a long stretch of white sand that really entices any visitor for a swim. 5. Lambug Beach Another not-so-popular-beach in the south of Cebu is the Lambug Beach in Badian. The beach is really awesome, virgin, unspoiled, fine sands and less crowd. What more can you ask for? The coconut trees along the shore added the beauty of this secluded beach. Since Lambug is a public beach, you can visit the beach without having to pay for entrance fee. Camping is allowed but a camp fee of 50 pesos is being collected. 6. Durhan White Beach One of Cebu's finest beach destination is located in the quiet town of Tabuelan - the Durhan White Beach. This is worth checking in especially during high tides where its white sand and blue water mesmerizes any visitor. Also a good place to check near the area is the Molobolo Spring where fresh water meets salt water. 7. Hidden Beach Aloguinsan is synonymous to Bojo River Cruise! Not known to many, Aloguinsan also has a beautiful beach (in its own right) that the municipality could be pruoud of. I am talking to no less than the Hidden Beach. As the name suggests, the beach is literally hidden and secluded. The road going to the beach is covered with grasses and there is no any sign that there is a beach nearby. So if you're looking for a beach that's not crowded, peaceful and quiet, head out to Hidden Beach in Aloguinsan! 8. BasDaku Moalboal When it comes to Cebu Beaches, Moalboal would always be the beach someone would recommend. Bas Daku White Beach in Saavedra, Moalboal. The beach has a white sandy coastline that extends to about a kilometer, perfect for a summer getaway. The most favorite activities to do here are island hopping and snorkeling. 9. Dalaguete Beach Park Dalaguete Beach Park is located within the boundary of Argao and Dalaguete which is sometimes called Arguete Beach Park. What make this beach stood out from the other best beaches in Cebu is its strong waves. Perfect spot for skimboarding! Overnight stay is not encouraged because there is not any source of light in the area, but permissible. 10. Carnasa Island If you took an island hopping tour in Malapascua then possibly you have visited Carnasa Island. This island is under the jurisdiction of Daanbantayan, Cebu, approximately 3-4 hours from the City. Then another 2 hours via pumboat would bring you to this secluded island of Carnasa. Activities to enjoy here includes kite surrfing, snorkeling and camping. Like most beaches here in Cebu, Carnasa Island also offers and powdery white sand and blue water.

Idyllic and luxurious in its setting, it’s a perfect way to enjoy your holiday in Cebu. Away from the crowds, fresh ocean air, a relaxing spa with Cebuano hospitality at its best, makes Alegre one of our best choices in the top beach resorts of Cebu. Large spacious rooms, huge bathrooms, great views, beautiful beach and a great pool make for a perfect romantic getaway. One we highly recommend. The title Cebu White Sands is a bit misleading, as the beach here isn’t as great as it sounds. Like with many beaches in Mactan Island, this beach is a bit disappointing! None the less this resort has a couple of great pools to enjoy swimming in. While not as big, brash or expensive as a lot of resorts in Mactan Island this one gives you a more laid back feel. The rooms are large and clean and the staff are very attentive and friendly. We really like the smaller feel to the place (not some 300 room 20 hectare resort where you need a taxi to get from one side to the other!), while still enjoying a relaxing ambience that you come to expect from a Cebu resort. For a complete guide the resorts in Mactan and things to do and see on the island, visit our Mactan page. Mangodlong Paradise Beach Resort takes the place of Santiago Bay Resort as our favourite resort in the Camotes. The resort is the closest thing you will get to luxury on the island with brand new rooms complete with all modern amenities you need. Mangodlong has its own great beach area as well as the great infinity pool (the only one on the Camotes). The resort has an open air restaurant serving up some great food. Friendly staff and lovely landscaped gardens makes this resort in Camotes one you really need to stay at. For the complete guide to resorts in the Camotes, please visit our Camotes page. I love anything hip and funky and this resort in Cebu (Mactan Island) fills our needs perfectly. As soon as you walk into this resort you can see that the interior decorator went to town with its vibrant colour schemes and trendy furniture. The rooms match the feel and style of the hotel, with their chic elegance. The beach again (as is the norm in Mactan) is pretty average, but the stylish looking (if rather a bit small) swimming pool makes up for the disappointing beach. Be Resort is popular with the Asian market and this Cebu resort ranks up there as one of my favourites. Looking for a resort in Cebu that gives you a piece of paradise? Sumilon Blue Water Resort in Cebu may give you that and more! A few hours south of Cebu City and a 10 minute boat ride will have you on this island. Beautiful, peaceful and secluded is what’s in store for the tourist. The rooms are spacious and simply furnished and have a veranda overlooking the ocean. The island offers the guest some beautiful beaches and great swimming opportunities. Relax, have a massage while looking at the ocean and just unwind! Ever wanted to camp under the stars? A new initiative is they offer luxury camping which we find tempting to say the least. Living in luxury is not cheap and you’re restricted to the resort’s only restaurant (again which isn’t cheap) so if you don’t mind the prices this is an excellent resort in Cebu. Mövenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu Of all of Cebu’s luxury beach resorts one definitely worth mentioning is the Movenpick Beach Resort on Mactan Island. Originally built by the Hilton Hotel Chain it was bought over by the Swiss company and re-branded as the Movenpick Hotel Mactan or better known as the Movenpick Cebu. They closed the resort for around 6 months and gave it a huge renovation to the beach area. This was a huge plus to the resort and gave it a much needed fresh and modern look. They opened their new beach front restaurant and bar the Ibiza Beach Club. At the end of the day, it’s a wonderful place chill and watch the sunset with a nice cold beer or cocktail. The staff are second to none and help make your vacation to Cebu only the more better. If you have the money it’s well worth checking out this resort in Cebu. This Cebu resort must go down as the best eye candy views in all of Mactan. We’re not talking about the girls either, this is strictly scenic views! The resort is made up of a number of man-made lagoons that are surrounded by luxury Villas. Pamper yourself at the spa, enjoy the water sports or dine in one of the resorts 4 restaurants, the choices are endless. Rooms are large and clean as what you would expect from a luxury resort. Plantation Bay is suitable for the whole family with activities to suit young and old. The beach itself is nothing too great and the place is expensive, a common thing you will find staying at any of the upper market resorts in Mactan! Sometimes you just have to spoil yourself a little, forget the costs and enjoy one of Cebu’s unique resorts.

The Philippines, located in Southeast Asia, is known for its very nice beaches and beach resorts. A lot of tourists go to this haven all throughout the year since it is a tropical country. Although the weather can be hot and humid, the lovely hospitality of the locals and the glorious beaches is enticing to tourists. And when the summer sun shines brightly, it seems to beckon to us to pack our colorful bags, huge umbrellas, along with our suntan lotions and head straight to the white sandy beaches. Are you a beach buff? Then prepare your beach clothes, beach bags and accessories, sarong and hats included and oh don't forget your suntan lotions to protect you from heat. You are in for a summer treat as we go on a tour to the top ten beach resorts in the Philippines. What are you waiting for? Let's go! Boracay Boracay is a tropical island famous for its white sand beaches and can rival the popular beaches in the Caribbean and the South Pacific area. The White Beach is what most people love about Boracay. It is a lovely stretch of powdery white sand against azure water. This very long beach is divided into three stations with station 1 having the widest beach front area and where prime hotels and resorts are found. The most suitable months for swimming on the White Beach is during the dry season -from November to April. But on the other side of the island where there are large winds and waves, wind surfing and wave running are activities that you can engage in. The rainy seasons which falls on the months from June to October, the reverse thing happens. White Beach now has large waves and makes it unsuitable for swimming. Panglao Island, Bohol City Philippines Bohol is the tenth largest island of the Philippines and is located in the middle of the Visayas region. Because it is surrounded by other islands on all sides, it doesn't experience as much heavy typhoons and rains unlike the other parts of the region. The beaches are located in Panglao Island. One of the most developed beach on Panglao is the Alona Beach. It is located southwest of the island and stretches about one and a half kilometers long. There are a lot of nice, affordable resorts equipped with diving, snorkeling and dining establishments. A friendly warning: sea urchins inhabit the sea in large numbers around twenty or thirty meters away so be careful when wading. Palawan Pangulasian Island From El Nido, Palawan El Nido, Palawan A lot of travelers are fascinated with El Nido due to its scenic landscapes, crystal clear waters and the relative isolation that offers a person quiet relaxation. There are 45 islands and islets with the surrounding sea that provides a lot of adventure and enjoying the pleasures that nature brings. You can engage in kayaking in lagoons, go on a mangrove tour, snorkeling or diving with tropical fishes, fishing, bird watching, picnic lunches of sunbathing in a white sand beach, among others. Camiguin, Cagayan City This tiny island with lush forests and seven volcanoes, eternal hot and cold natural springs, white beaches and majestic waterfalls would suit the traveler who is looking for an idyllic vacation. The Camiguin province has been identified by the Department of Tourism as one of the top 25 tourist destinations in the Philippines, and No. 7 diving spot in the world. Mactan Island, Cebu Mactan Island is located just a few kilometers from Cebu. From Cebu you need to cross either of the two bridges - Mactan Bridge or Marcelo Fernan Bridge to reach Mactan. This island has all the major beach resorts offering diving, snokling, jet skiing, para sailing, island hopping and where the historical Lapu-Lapu Shrine can be found. Datu Lapu-Lapu, one of the chieftains at that time, was engaged in a tribal warfare with Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. The lovely beaches with a water temperature between 27-30 C is ideal for diving or swimming all year round. You can also visit Malapascua Island, famous for its white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters or Moalboal, one of the first places where scuba diving caught on. Puerto Galera, Sabang Beach, White Beach Dubbed as the Pearl of Mindoro, Puerto Galera has one of the world's most natural harbors. It is world-famous for splendid beaches, coral reefs and dive sites. (Visit Sabang Beach or White Beach.) The scuba diving season is year round. From its start of "backyard tourism" where local residents accepted guests in their homes, the island has now flourished with resorts, hotels and inns within the area. Pearl Farm, Samal Island Davao City If you travel to the southern part of the Philippines, the Samal group of Islands (nine islands in all) is a beautiful, tranquil, exotic island with a coastline adorned with white sand beaches, colorful marine life, flourishing flora and fauna. The Pearl Farm is nestled on the quiet side of Samal Isalnd, a 45 min. boat ride from the wharf, and is a world-class resort. The named Pearl Farm came to be because this area was once an 11 hectare pearl farm with thousands of white-lipped oysters. Dakak, Dipolog City The famous Dakak beach is famous for its strikingly shaped bay and powdery white sand. It is dubbed as the diving Mecca in Mindanao, Philippines. The perfect blue waters and diving sites attracts tourists local and foreigners alike. It is nestled on the tip of northern Zamboanga and faces the Sulu Sea in the west and on the east side, it is surrounded by mountains. Pagudpud Island, Ilocos Norte Ilocos Norte's Pagudpud Island is not comparable to the more sophisticated resorts found in Boracay. But the northern-most stretch of Saud Beach has sand as fine and white found in the other beaches like that of Boracay.

Tourism development in the Philippines

Plan Underscores Importance of Convergence among Government Agencies and Developing Diverse Tourism Products The DOT further revealed that the 2013 international visitor target was 5.5 million, a considerable increase from the 4.3 million international tourist arrivals recorded in 2012. Meanwhile, the volume of domestic travelers in 2012 was 40.7 million, and this is expected to increase to 44.1 million in 2013. The top sources of international travelers to the Philippines were Korea, USA, Japan, and China. Strategic markets include Taiwan, Australia, Singapore, and Canada, while opportunity markets include Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Malaysia, and Germany. Tourism Undersecretary for Tourism Development Daniel G. Corpuz outlined three key strategies in moving forward to attain the goal of increased volume in tourists, including: developing and marketing competitive tourist products and destinations; improving market access, connectivity, and destination infrastructure; and improving institutional governance and human resources. “Tourism is a major instrument to contribute to national development, and the National Tourism Development Plan must be synchronized with the Philippine Development Plan, ” explained Undersecretary Corpuz. “Government agencies are required to submit a portion of their budgets that will have an impact on tourism development.” Tourism Assistant Secretary Roland Cañizal further expounded on greater integration of government agencies to allocate adequate resources that would boost tourism development in the Philippines, citing several Convergence Programs that the DOT has with other departments, especially the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the provision of access roads to tourist destinations and the Department of Communications (DOTC) in upgrading key airports throughout the Philippines. He further emphasized the role of local government units in boosting tourism destinations in their respective jurisdictions. “This is the kind of thinking that we want to cascade to all the local government units—that if they are serious about being a part of the National Tourism Development Plan, their seriousness is translated in terms of their commitment to develop their areas and to put the necessary resources to make sure that the plan is being implemented, ” Cañizal said. In terms of developing and marketing a diverse range of tourism products and services, Undersecretary Corpuz emphasized that the Philippines must think “beyond beach vacations”. Among the products identified by the DOT are: nature tourism; cultural tourism; sun and beach tourism; leisure and entertainment tourism; MICE and events tourism; health, wellness, and retirement tourism; cruise and nautical tourism; diving and marine sports tourism; and education tourism. In a videotaped message, Tourism Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. stated that the tourism industry is all about changing mindsets in the Philippines, especially since it did not rank high in terms of priorities for the longest time. “The National Tourism Development Plan provides a framework for an honest and professional tourism sector as an engine for sustainable growth, ” he emphasized. “We need to buttress a closer and stronger cooperation among tourism players in this flattering period of the Philippines’ growth, ” Dr. DeKrey stated. “There is no room for complacency, and we already have what it takes to make it happen—skills, talent, enterprise, and government support. The AIM Center for Tourism aims to create greater opportunities for the Philippines through tourism, education, and economic development. We hope to support the tourism industry as it works toward generating sustainable development.”
